I’d wondered if/how to “commemorate” the big 100, but after going through a bevy of computer issues this week, I’m just relieved to have the site still running, frankly! If anything, I’m amazed to still be doing this after 100 weeks of Open Threads (and nearly three years overall)….

To all those who have lost a loved one during 9/11 – my thoughts, prayers and love go out to you. <3
Hmmm… I wonder why JB noona used that still from Bad Couple. Isn’t that when she was rejoicing (Korean flag in hand) for getting impregnated with the best sperm in all of Korea?
Congratulations on your 100th post!
I’ve also just been informed that i’ve survived the latest round of job cuts at my company. So yes, your icon is very apt, at least for me!
Congratulations!!! Javabeans!!!

CUT A CAKE !!!
Congratulations Javabeans! Happy 100th OT!
I really, really appreciate all your hard work and honestly a huge percent of my understanding and knowledge of kpop/culture was because of your site. Through you, I’ve been introduced to so many great dramas and great music. Seriously thank you so much for providing a place where fellow kdrama addicts can come together and discuss pretty much anything!
Sarah, a bouquet of @}–}- for you !! and good vibes for getting your computer problems — or getting a new ::choke:: Dell. As a devoted Mac user for 20 years, it’s sad to hear you going over to the dark side ^^ but whatever keeps you going here on DB, i’m for it!
Thank you for being here — my daily (or many times daily) source for intelligent, thoughtful, witty news and analysis of my favorite form of addiction.
만세! 만세! 만세!
Congratulations, Sarah!!! Thank you for making our lives a little bit brighter each and every day!
Happy 100th OT, Everyone!
Happy 40th, blkrose!
Peace to the world.
So, I was about to go to bed last night and turned on the bedroom TV just to check what was on the Korean channels (hurrah for digital TV!), and lo and behold…I caught the last 20 minutes of the My Fair Lady cast on Happy Together.
Oh, Jung Il Woo…you are too adorable!!! That smile…that laugh…and all the noona’s picking him over Yoon Sang Hoon as the man they’d choose.
Got exciting plans this weekend?
I’ve got more football…the last season of Robin Hood starts airing tomorrow on BBC America…True Blood’s season finale on Sunday….kdramas galore to catch up on….and Tamna – Hanyang, here we come!!!
CONGRATS!
Been loving your site, ever since…I started reading. I don’t even remember when?! XD
Looking forward to the 200th OT! XD
This week is a week of tears. May everyone find comfort and peace.
But in Kpopland it’s also teary-eyed for some. I was thinking about Kpop tears from 2PM Jay/JaeBeom supporters. JB, I’ve been itching to ask what’s your take in this? Cause this relates to Korean Americans and netizens as a whole. Sorry if I brought in a sensitive or gossipy topic. Just want to know what are your opinions bout this?
Javabeans!
Happy 100th OT! Yipeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee…
BTW – “STORY OF A MAN won Best Drama Series” at the Seoul International Drama Awards 2009. This news should make your 100th OT and your Friday a happy one. It sure made my Friday morning brighter!
cheers
Dear JB
A big THANKS to you once again for sharing your wit and insight with us. It has been my daily ritual for over two years (since August 2007 the CP craze days) to come here for K-matters. I cannot imagine days without dramabeans.
Your generous thoughts of creating an Open Thread for us to rant and rave are appreciated by us all! Look forward to the 200th OT……
Happy 100th!! Thanks so much for all your hard work.
Happy Friday to all!
Congratulations on your 100th javabeans! You’re doing a great job and thanks for everything that you’ve been sharing & will be sharing with us! You certainly keep us abreast of what’s going on in the Korean entertainment world with your eloquence in writing etc. Thanks again & more power to you!
@ hjkomo — re: Happy Together: me too! That was cool (altho I would pick YSH in a heartbeat keke). LOL at Jung Il Woo saying what he was so great at, then getting beat at all the silly contests (e.g., staring). The cast does seem very close, as Sarah pointed out in the Il Woo birthday story yesterday.
oh ya JB!! forgot to mention, LOVE the song you picked for today
i’ve been a huge sara bareilles fan since before she went mainstream and it’s rare to hear someone who sounds SO much better live than she does on a recording (not that her recordings aren’t great, but you know what i mean hehe).
Happy 100th OT!
Didn’t bake any cupcakes and I am sitting here with some home made jellyfied cherries and cream and coffee to enjoy the OT.
@6 lb_tmi
When I was sick once I read up the first Open Threads up until 30 – compared to the OTs nowadays it was like reading “Little House on the Prairie”.
I watched Tamra this week and liked it a lot, despite all the historical inaccuracies which would totally put me of an American drama. I was pleasantly surprised by the English the French guy spoke, because I had severe misgivings about that before. Most French people I know have a rather heavy accent. But William has a really ghostlike white complexion which would really no have been necessary just to make him “different” from everybody else in the drama.
And here is my question to “Dear Ruth (aka all)” for this special occasion:
Today I read in a list that “2001 – A Space Odyssey” has once again been voted under the Top 5 movies of all times. This always bugs me a lot because this leaves me with only one conclusion: I am just too dumb to get this movie! I watched it first as a teenager and my conclusion at that time: Taking into account at what time the movie was made it is probably best to watch it when you have taken some drugs. Aah – all these beautiful pictures moving around, and so on.
A couple of years ago they had a rerun of it in the movie theatres and I thought I should give it another shot – as I was probably to immature to understand the deep meaning of the epic story in my teens. But guess what: Two hours of complete boredom! Have I been corrupted by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Roland Emmerich? Am I the only one not getting the awesomness of 2001? What am I missing?
Congratulations on your 100th open thread, dear javabeans.
chuka
Congratulations. Keep on moving.. we love you very much
@36 AnitaLotti
I think 2001 is a film that was genius for the time. The directing style is fantastic, but I do think a lot of what made it revolutionary at the time is mundane now. It’s definitely not you. I read the book a few years back and it was equally disinteresting.
So in honor of the 100th Open Thread, why don’t people list their Top 3 Dramas and what started them on the slippery slope of Asian Drama Addiction, a.k.a. ADA.
For me, my top 3 (and I know this is hard to determine):
A Love To Kill
9 Ends 2 Outs
Legend
I can’t explain why they are my favorites. I chose them because they are the dramas that affected me the most, emotionally.
What started my ADA?
The year was 2007. I was on vacation in the Philippines, bored at my cousins house. I saw a DVD called My Girl and popped it in, thinking it was a movie. 4 long hours later (and I’m wondering WHY is this movie so long??!?!), I realized it was a miniseries. I didn’t get to finish it in the Philippines so when I went back to the States, I searched frantically online and found the website mysoju (which I know a lot of subbers dislike). But through that website, I was able to finish My Girl and it introduced me to SO MANY DRAMAS. After that? I was hooked.
Your story?
@hjkomo @ paula253: oh, i watched happy together the summer special! the ‘bickering’ between the mcs were so funny~i also love how park myungsoo throw in all that sarcastic jest during that whole horror story ordeal thing. “close your curtains! get wallpapers!” and how he kept on talking bout eru instead of jung ilwoo. “regarding jung ilwoo and any connection between them: oh, i’m close to his dad.”
the two men (jiw & ysh) both phail at many things, no? i would lose in the staring game if pms was the one staring at me. ysh failed in the impersonation and the high pitch game. XD
@jjjh: yeah, but kim hyung joon won best actor – people’s choice and BOF won best drama – people’s choice. my jaw dropped out of laughter. and ALMOST PARADISE was sung. . . =.= the only good thing bout the whole award was slingshot and beethoven virus and moon geun young.
@ 40 mishane
Top three? This is difficult.
Soulmate
Que Sera Sera
My Girl? At least I keep re-watching this drama and I’m no less entertained by it now than I was when I first saw it.
What got me started on the kdrama slope? Back in 2005, my roommate was OBSESSED with Hana Yori Dango. I liked the comic decently, but my liking was nothing compared to her love. She then found the jdrama. OMG. We watched it in a weekend. Which lead me to finding d-addicts, where I was amazed that Koreans made dramas as well. People were raving about Goong, so I began and haven’t looked back since.
Congratulations Javabeans. And, thank you.
@mishane:
ADA…just korean dramas or any?
top 3 korean (so far):
beethoven virus
hello god
lovers in paris + prague XD
top 3 chinese:
butterfly lovers (2007)
they kissed again
prince turn to frog
top 3 japanese:
hero
man cannot get married
change
come to think of it, i seem to watch many dramas at interim instead of A-Z.
my start to ADA:
autumn in my heart. everyone was crazy about the soundtrack (many attempted to play the song), the good looking guys (bae yong joon who?)…ah, love. i know i had a celeb crush on won bin XD. but looking back, it has to be one of the craziest drama i’ve watched. but i remember all the main characters and some supporting characters i’ve watched. and so i spot them and remember them even now. from korean went chinese went japanese and back to korean.
congrats on the 100 open threads(:
eeek. the one thing i’m disliking about college is all the partying =/
i dont drink. so i picked the substance-free dorm to live in…
but even everyone here goes out and drinks, hahahh.
@41 chajjye – lol i read about kim hyun joong winning best actor and laughed my a$$ off.. kid is pretty as all hell but can’t act to save his pretty face haha. it was a much needed distraction from all the drama in the kpop world right now
Happy 100th!!!! This site is so wonderful and I really appreciate the in-depth, thoughtful episode recaps of the shows you’ve done. The OT’s & various episode recaps have been just as addicting as some of the shows – Thank you so much JB!!!
@mishane
Top 3:
Spring Waltz
Sorry, I Love You
9E2O & Mixed Up Investigative Agency
As for how I got started – I blame my friend Alison. She had come back from Korea with her god-daughter and she was telling me about her god-daughter’s obession with Daniel Henney. Her god-daughter made her sit through the entire series and she too became infected with the DH-virus. She then passed it on to me. While I didn’t really love the drama, I did fall in crush with DH which led me to buy Spring Waltz. From Spring Waltz on, I have been an addict & this site is my enabler:-)
@mishane:
My top 3 korean drama so far:
I’m sorry I love you (I loveee im so jung and so ji sub)
Succesfull story of a bright girl (my first introduction to kdrama,it hold special place in my heart)
For the third, I can’t think of any right now, maybe dae jang geum?
100, a true milestone. Here’s to another 100!!
Thanks for providing a place for people to just chill. It is much needed from our hectic and drama filled world.
@ mishane, good idea! and lol at ADA. I would gladly go to meetings every night of the week with other ADAers. ^^
Top 3
I’m thinking of dramas I could watch many times and still get to me
- Misa (Sorry I Love You)
- Daejanggeum
- in the rom-com category it’s harder to choose. Attic Cat is still hard to beat even tho it gets repetitious. i have to call a tie here: Attic Cat – My Name is Kim Samsoon – Dalja’s Spring – Vineyard Man (the best thing YEH ever did IMO, and of course it stars Oh Man Seok in his first drama)
I haven’t seen the end of Sons of Sol Pharmacy House, but i think it’s going to be at the top of my list soon. I also left out dark dramas like Lucifer and Resurrection .. and oh! Capital Scandal. sheesh.
How My ADA Began
I should say that I watched American soaps (Guiding Light RIP) for ~20 yrs so i have a history with the genre but of course K-Drama rocks!
Early Spring 2002, my husband was channel surfing ^^ and came across KOAM (Federal Way WA) which at that time took over a home shopping channel for 3 hrs every night. We got hooked on the family dynamics and social context of daily drama, esp. the relationships b/n mothers in law and daughters in law. The first drama we ever saw was Tender Hearts 우리가 남인가요. On the weekends, my husband watched the saeguks, beginning with Wang Gun. After a couple months, KOAM announced that, beginning the next day, it was switching to 24/7 programming on Ch. 257, for $14.95/mo. We looked at each other and said, OMG, call them up! We can’t miss the story!! and that was that. Haven’t watched American primetime TV or seen an American movie in the theatre since then. Jinjja. (really) When we went to live in Seoul last spring for 5 months (my husband taught at Yonsei as a visiting prof), i thought, you never know where drama watching will take you! ^^
