Heading to the Ground cut again

Honestly, this has to suck for Heading to the Ground: Not only did MBC already cut the broadcast down by several episodes due to poor ratings, it has made an additional cut. What seems worse (to me) is the way in which they approached the matter, because viewers found out from a notice that ran after this Thursday’s episode that read, “The last episode will air next Wednesday.” Viewers were surprised to have the show end earlier than expected; this means there’s only one more episode, and MBC will broadcast a foreign documentary on Thursday.

The soccer drama starring idol star U-Know Yunho in his acting debut was initially supposed to wrap on November 12 with Episode 20. After two episodes were shaved from the series and one episode was postponed due to sports, the Episode 17 finale was moved up to November 5 to allow Hero to premiere a week earlier than scheduled. With the additional cut, the drama will now end on November 4 with Episode 16.

Heading to the Ground got off to a rough start with criticism for its star’s weak acting, which was followed by a slew of complaints over its confusing storyline that had nothing to do with the drama’s purported theme of soccer. Its ratings lagged in the 3%-4% range, and when competitor drama IRIS came along it drove a nail into the coffin; right after IRIS‘s 25% premiere, MBC announced the first cut to Heading. You’re Beautiful has held steady with 9%-10% ratings; Heading‘s most recent episode drew a 3.7%.

I get that Heading is not performing well, and it sounds like it’s riddled with flaws, but I do wish MBC would take more care with its underperforming series. A show may be subpar, but these last-minute scheduling changes only handicap the series further, and thus never gives it the chance to be the best version of itself. Then again, sounds like Heading may just need to be put out of its misery.

This is a terrible, terrible news, and it could screw up Hero big time.

Kim Min Jung injured her shoulder, and she may need surgery. Which means that Hero's production is also in trouble (currently trying to shoot around her injury), and they can't afford to start earlier than its current date. In fact, if they start at their current date, they may have problems keeping up with the live-shoot.

If MBC does it, they really, really need to air some tweener programming between Heading and Hero. They used to sometimes run 2-episode specials between shows. This would be a great time for that.

LOL WHAT AN APPROPRIATE TITLE FOR THIS DRAMA

You know what I don't get? Why the networks decide to pull a drama and replace it with random stuff (in this case a documentary) even though they already have an ep ready? It doesn't make sense, imho. Even if the drama is doing badly, wouldn't it in any case do better than random stuff?

that's really cruel! i've never heard of a drama being cut TWICE! seriously, one more episode can't hurt! and it sucks for Hero to have to come out earlier, especially with kim min jung's injury!

the editing in episode 15 was atrocious. i've never seen such choppy sequences in my life.

poor yunho. the drama is actually okay when you sit down and watch it, and his acting improved exponentially.

sigh.

good luck to him in his next project.

Poor cast & crew. I gave up on the drama when Yunho's character was put in a mental hospital - it was just to weird.

With two competing shows so much better than this, it's no wonder the ratings have thoroughly sucked, but still this has really got to hurt. MBC really have been tough this year, haven't they?

i'm actually surprise it even has 16 episodes to air. It's only good for this misery to end.

I'm worry for Hero's cast members. I have a feeling they have to work extra-time to make up for this drama early end. Not mention its leading actress's injury.

"Actual idol" dramas usually never fare well. Changmin should prepare himself if that drama of him and Lee Yeon-hee is still in the works. Imagine, another DBSK and another SM actress. I'm going to be surprised if it'll do better than HTTG.

MBC still has the monster hit, Queen Seon Duk, they have nothing to worry about. Honestly, that drama's ratings are much higher than ALL their low rating dramas combine.

Haha, just thought it's funny that MBC is killing all their competitions on Monday+Tuesday nights, while getting their asses kick on Wednesday+Thursday. XDD You can't win all.

I haven't watched this drama at all, but I had to laugh at your comment (even though I feel a bit mean). Hope the cast and crew can just look on this as a good learning experience.

i wonder what leads to some dramas doing so poorly in ratings, i thought people would watch cause there is an idol star, but i guess not. do sports dramas usually fail in the ratings? there is going to be another sports drama about skating, why do they keep going for that genre?

@anna,

"“Actual idol” dramas usually never fare well. Changmin should prepare himself if that drama of him and Lee Yeon-hee is still in the works."

Indeed. K-drama audiences love their pretty boys/girls too, but they have really, really high standards for acting. Now, people may disagree with me on that. Go watch most TW Idol-dramas or J-dramas that air in the summer. Totally different level of expectations.

It makes more sense for most idols to do support roles or specials (like Jaejoong for Heaven's Postman), until they're ready to be a lead.

LOL @more thanks for the laugh =] i've never watched so i felt kind of bad but that was funny. i'm sad about low ratings for you're beautiful. honestly i'm already confident that (at least in my heart) you're beautiful is more fun and interesting than BOF yet BOF was a mania hit and you're beautiful has somehow not gotten that response :/ which leaves me confused and distressed. i hope this doesn't affect the script or acting </3

I think the title cursed the drama right from the start. As much as I love Yunho (DBSK), even I was turned off by since episode 1, I couldn't perk up and finish it, that's how worst the drama is! Anywho, poor Yunho.

That is what commercialization is doing to dramas. Money, money, rating, rating. What else?

I like Yunho a lot but I really don't like the main actress.
That's why I couldn't give them a try.
I think it's because of sport drama and the lead as well.
They should put someone more experience and famous than this lead girl.
She's too boring when match with Yunho.

meh, what a waste of resources, they filmed 20 but showed only 16.

poor yunho. i mean, his acting actually exceeded expectations since he did improve exponentially, but the scriptwriting just sucks, not to mention the fact that ara's acting wasn't that satisfactory either.

i do hope that Changmin's drama does better. the scriptwriting team does sound superb, with the writers of Into the Sun and Coffee Prince doing a collaboration together.

@22 ambs

Yes totally agree. I know this is mean but I don't really care if HTTG has low ratings! Why can't the ratings of You're beautiful boost from 10%? Although it is not that bad, but it certainly deserves MUCH MORE.

Of course I agree that ratings are about comercial, money, sponsor etc, but it is also a form of acknowledgement for the actors. If you are part of the cast and crew, of course you will be glad to know that your show is receiving high ratings right? The cast and crew don't know that YB has so many fans out there! I mean, just look at the number of views and ranking from viikii and mysoju, they are totally topping the viewership online. If only they take online viewership into account.

Same for Heading to the ground, their viewership on mysoju isn't THAT horrible if you compare it to TV ratings. With low ratings and continuous cutting from MBC, I doubt they are in the mood to perform any better.

Well in conclusion, I feel that people should start changing their mindset already, ratings should not be a way to gauge a show's popularity, it's not even an accurate reflection!

As for Yunho, i feel really bad for him. He is in DBSK. But I watched one ep of it and couldnt stand his exaggerated acting. His role doesn't fit his image I guess, plus the plot is so draggy. I really hope he will get a better role next time, if well....he even has another chance?

i think YH DID improve in terms of acting, and i LOVE lee yoon ji and lee sang yoon and the other casts but go ara is the biggest disappointment *sigh* always thought she's a pretty good young actress (watched "who are you") but somehow in HTTG, she's just eehhh...
i don't understand why they're cutting ONE more episode and airing a foreign documentary instead *confused*
at least let it has a proper ending for the people who actually watches it since day one =/

The main actress was terrible, I seen her in other drama and she alway come up short. YH did improve with each episode, but the co-star actess was the only navagation in this other wise maze of a storyline. Potato and CB had great chemistry, if they would have turn the romance toward them they probably would have complete the 20 episode, even a newbie writer they interaction was so endearing it could have been sucessful. Instead they insisted on making a square fit a circle and expect me to believe they should be together because they on the poster. K-drama is not about the words but action and the facial expression and the scene that make your husband cringes, because he know you going to want to reacting that one moment when you put yourself in place of the actress on the screen. The whole CB and HB ended for me when CB and Potato did the stairway scene, it was a wrap, it almost cause my divorce if I ask my husband to carry me up the stair one more time chanting my name it won't just be my name he forget....hahahahaha

@MRS. LEE: I am not trying to sound offensive here but I think you probably are just envious of Go Ah Ra because not only is she beautiful, but a good actress as well.
Is it just me, or most women out there dislike her- maybe its because they're just envious of her. I personally think she's even prettier than most Korean actresses. What I like about her is that when she acts (especially in funny scenes)she is not trying to look cute, unlike most Korean actresses. I think her dance performance in Episode 10 was quite extraordinary. I'm not sure if other actresses can perform it perfectly as Go Ah Ra had done it.

I really like HTTG. And I think Yunho did very well, especially during the scenes when Cha Bong Gun gets smitten by Hae Bin's sweetness :) His acting looked so natural. His acting skills may not be appreciated in his home country, but in other parts of the world he is greatly appreciated.

MBC should have not relied on the ratings of the drama. Just because it was low, doesnt mean nobody's watching it or gonna watch it anymore. It's pretty unfair for the drama's cast and crew who prepared very well, only for the last 4 episodes to be cut. ANd its not like the whole country gave the rating, some just love watching HTTG!

Over all, I give HTTG FIVE STARS!!!
