Heading’s abrupt story changes prompt viewer complaints

Viewers are apparently unhappy with the recent events of MBC’s Heading to the Ground, and I can’t say I blame them — because, doth mine eyes deceive me? Has the drama’s main star U-Know Yunho actually been packed off to a mental hospital?

The drama is now halfway through, and despite the soccer theme, the story shifted abruptly in Episode 5 to center around a mental ward, after Bong-kun (Yunho) suffered an accident. He had been saving Hae-bin (Go Ara) from falling into the Han River, and ended up in the hospital with amnesia.

This week, he finally recovered his memory and escaped the hospital, where a fire had broken out. He risked himself to rescue a fellow patient who had been a support to him during his stay.

As a result, viewers are voicing their complaints about the drama’s choppy plotting and the lack of connection to the previous story. Some point out that the story of Bong-kun being locked up in the hospital dragged on too long (“The Bong-kun who dreams of soccer disappeared, and we got a Bong-kun who dreams of escaping a mental hospital… it’s so improbable”).

Another comment (which cracks me up) complained, “I thought we were getting a soccer drama but that wasn’t it, then I thought it was a romance drama but that wasn’t it, then it turned into a One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest or Papillon drama, but finally it turns out that it’s a fantasy drama where you hit the wall once and the hospital collapses.”

Of course there are some who defend the latest storyline, saying it was touching to see Bong-kun saving his fellow patient-captive and showing some maturity in overcoming adversity. Unfortunately for the drama, it’s still languishing in the bottom of the Wednesday-Thursday ratings; its last episode pulled in a 5.1% against Swallow the Sun‘s 18.8% finale and My Fair Lady‘s 14.1%. Perhaps they’ll do better since one of those is now over and SBS’s new drama You’re Beautiful kicks in next week — but probably not, since fans of idol star Yunho may be more drawn to that idol-star-themed trendy series anyway.

I honestly don't like September. Thank God it's October already. Hopefully, it can only get better now. September is a month of nonsensical things. Gaaa. Poor Yunho.

but as a fan of him..i wish all the best for him cuz i knew he works hard for this drama...and all crews...however they work hard too...

I planned to stop watching this drama cause it was getting absurd for me. The first ep was bad, but it got better... right until the whole kidnapping and mental asylum part :| But after watching snippets of ep 8 (completely skipped on ep 7 cause the whole hospital burnt to the ground is just really :\ to me) I think the drama's not all that bad. I actually like the ending of ep 8. I think I'll stick with the drama after all. I'm curious of how Bong Gun's character's going to develop. And despite its bad plot, the drama does have some small cute moments.

I love this drama.. i must say that it started confusingly making most viewers back out from watching it. which is a big mistake.. i gave it a shot coz am a huge fan of Yunho and am beginning to see a potential in his acting talent.. he's definitely much much better than the first episodes before he entered the mental hospital..

hope you give it another shot too. i think the real thing is beginning now after episode 7.. so am definitely sticking to the show..

When i first saw the teaser , i was like wth? Yh's acting is weak & awkward! There's when i have a doubt in the drama. And for ara gosh this must be her first drama failure.. So far all the drama i watch by her are good!

i watched the first ep halfway through & it doesnt appeal me. I was anticipating for yh first debut role but then i think the character he plays doesn't suit him.I thik he's no ready for a main role. He should start as an extra first . Well most actors play as an antagonist before having the lead role of a drama ..etc..

When i first saw sm as one of the sponsors ,i was lke they definitely they would use snsd to sing one of the theme and wala , turned up to be true.I hope they would do something to the drama.

And the storyline of the show is lack of substance . Editings are choppy too & Yh's acting is awkward & over react ?Although i'm a yh fan but doesn't mean i have to blindly say this show is good cause he's acting it.

My fair lady is like 100 times better. YSH can act really well so as eunhye too.

needless to say sports drama is always boring ! smile again was kinda boring too..no offense..

Story of a Man was a rocking drama for me this year, so far my fair lady is more of a laugh for me, but I'm super stoked for you're beautiful, I'm addicted to the girl posing as boy plot even though its getting a bit boring but still its my guilty pleasure :]

Yunho's really not that bad for a newbie actor, but the drama itself has such amateurish writing. Ugh. It's not really the acting that detracts from the drama, it's the writing!

It really sounds like it's going to follow the fate of Tamra and Triple. None of the sport dramas this summer attracted enough viewers. Maybe it's time to put an end to it.

I was skipping here and there through the drama and thought i was missing an earthquake or something when BangGoon hit the wall and the whole hospital collapsed. i cannot believe the production crew actually approved this script --

aside from the weird fantasy plot (lol I cracked up at the 'fantasy drama' comment too), I'm disappointed with the lack of chemistry between Go Ara and Yunho's characters. yes they make a very cute couple appearance-wise, but I just don't feel the chemistry. it could be because of the storyline, the acting or both. I like the second pairing of Yeon yi and Dong ho a lot better. Dong Ho might an arrogant, annoying character but I love the way he tried to convey his feelings to Yeon yi. And I really like Lee Yoonji's performance and hope to see more of her in other future dramas.

don't get me wrong i enjoy the drama, but the writing is just horrible. yunho's acting in fact is getting better and better, and i think it's the writing, not the acting, that brings the ratings down. hopefully, now that the story is back on track, it will turn for the better.

Can they change the storyline to have YH and Lee Yoon Ji end up together since the chemistry is better between them?

@70 yvhsien:

OMG I totally agree with you! Their great chemistry led me to believe he likes LYJ more and since he's a terrible actor that means it's genuine..LOL. Sorry I'm sprouting nonsense but yeah, I honestly think YH-LYJ is a better pairing than YH-GAR.

The main actress was terrible, I seen her in other drama and she alway come up short. YH did improve with each episode, but the co-star actess was the only navagation in this other wise maze of a storyline. Potato and CB had great chemistry, if they would have turn the romance toward them they probably would have complete the 20 episode, even a newbie writer they interaction was so endearing it could have been sucessful. Instead they insisted on making a square fit a circle and expect me to believe they should be together because they on the poster. K-drama is not about the words but action and the facial expression and the scene that make your husband cringes, because he know you going to want to reacting that one moment when you put yourself in place of the actress on the screen. The whole CB and HB ended for me when CB and Potato did the stairway scene, it was a wrap, it almost cause my divorce if I ask my husband to carry me up the stair again chanting my name.....
