Into the White Night holds press conference

Sohn Ye-jin, Go Soo

With the theatrical release approaching for dark thriller film Into the White Night (aka Baekyahaeng: Walk Into the White Night), the production held a press conference on the morning of October 21 in Seoul. In attendance were the movie’s two lead stars, Sohn Ye-jin (Open City) and Go Soo. For the latter, this marks his first screen role since his pre-military drama Marrying a Millionaire back in 2005.

I’ve definitely been anticipating this movie, not (only) because Go Soo finally returns to acting, but because the story sounds wonderfully dark and tense, and the trailer (watch here) looks great.

Into the White Night is based on a Japanese novel about two young people whose terrible past hides the fact that as teenagers, they killed each other’s parents. They go into hiding for fourteen years until the statute of limitations expires on their crime, and their love remains strong even as their lives take separate paths — she into the light, he into the shadows. The detective who heads the reinvestigation of the old murder case is, interestingly enough, described as “being uniquely able to understand the dark, sad fate of these two.”

Asked about her choice in taking provocative recent roles, Sohn Ye-jin answered, “I’m not worried about being stuck with a provocative image.” She explained, “I’ve done a lot of melodramas, so for a while I took on mostly ladylike characters, but at some point I started taking on comic characters, divorced women, and adulterers. I think that’s why a lot of people think I’ve changed my image, but when I choose a project, I don’t think that’s important.”

She continued, “Actors have to be seen as the character within the film, so I don’t worry that the role may get me stuck with a provocative image. I’ve never thought that people may misunderstand me because of that image.”

Go Soo answered questions of how he felt about his long hiatus, saying that there were times he thought of extending his break even more, so he didn’t feel it was that long. He reasoned, “The time of film production was long, but my acting career hadn’t stopped.”

Regarding the many hoobae (younger) actors now in action, he said, “There are many good-looking and hard-working people out now, so it makes me think that I’d better work hard and not be lazy.”

The film is a mystery thriller and also features Han Seok-kyu (Eye for an Eye, Tooth for a Tooth) and Lee Min-jung (Smile). Into the White Night opens on November 19.

Below, stars Sohn Ye-jin and Go Soo attend the press conference with co-star Han Seok-kyu and director Park Shin-woo.

Oh..another sex scene by SYJ..she's done a lot of nude scenes. I don't mind seeing a nude/bed scene in a film so long that it adds value to the whole nuance of the movie. Otherwise, it's just worthless to strip your clothes off.

But, Go Soo and Sohn Ye Jin are so good looking that they will look great in a bed scene. For that, I am looking forward to seeing this movie. I think Sohn Ye Jin will partner well with Yoo Ji tae, who is also known to do many racy movies (yes..including naked scenes in Old Boy and Women is the Future Men). They both are pretty open minded in terms of controversial scenes.
OH! You're my new favorite blogger fyi

Why do I start grinning foolishly when I see pictures of Goo Soo?!!! I love it when his eyes get all quizzical when he has to smile for the camera and make nice. It's almost like he's laughing at himself for his fake smiles. Tony Leung does that a lot. It's so great when gorgeous guys don't take themselves too seriously. I like Goo Soo better on the slim side. You get to see his great bone structure and his eyes get more soulful. When he puts on weight he gets very burly and his face gets too round and full. He looks like big cute overgrown toddler.

Good, good for SYJ for not playing it safe and breaking the mould. Big stars like her can afford to take risks and they should. Otherwise, it gets all so boring. Women who do what they want are the coolest. Like Angelina Jolie.

I definitely agree with commenter #18 Soni. SYJ looks very much beautiful and healthy. In fact, she reminds me of Gu Jun Pyo's noona in BOF. They're both pretty and great actors. Looking forward to this movie. Go Soo looks hotter and cuter than ever^-^! Another oppa to add on my list.

Go Soo is even 4 years older than Son Ye Jin but he is an athlete.
That 's the reason why he looks always young and handsome.
I think he is one of the most handsomest korean actor.
Son Ye Jin is also very pretty and charming nowadays.

@#14 Sonam: I totally agree with what you said about Go Soo's smile! I see that look on James McAvoy's face very often too (he's another favorite actor of mine, and is known to not take himself very seriously.) I also think Go Soo looks better slim. He looks much sleeker and agile that way.

I think Son Ye-jin looks really good in the photos here too. She tends to look older, and she finally looks her age with that hairstyle. Love her smile.

Anybody else thinks syj looks a lot like Go Soo here. Anybody?

I saw an interview once with Go Soo and he mentioned some of his costars get frustrated with him because he talks slow. Apparently he is from an area of korea that is known for slow speech pattern.

SYJ is beautiful, its just that her hairstyle and dress in the above photos didn't do anything to show her beauty. she should change her stylist. go soo, on the other hand, is looking good - the top half at least, the lower part (pants and shoes) is mehhhhhhh. i am so glad that he has changed his hairstyle already. didn't like the longer hair he sported soon after his military service. i like the way he looks now (similar to how he looked in green rose). don't like his look in marrying a millionaire.

on the movie: the story sounds interesting, and syj and go soo are good actors, i'm sure they will do justice to their roles. i wish them the best in this movie and i hope that somebody will eng sub it and upload it so their fans outside SK can watch it.

"SYJ is beautiful, its just that her hairstyle and dress in the above photos didn’t do anything to show her beauty."

Her fringe is way too much. Instead of accentuating her doll-like face shape, her bangs threaten to take over her whole face.

i've seen the original 11 ep Jdrama starring Takayuki Yamada and it is indeed a dark story. Even though he becomes a creepy person and does some bad stuff to keep the secret and elevate her standing in the eyes of others you can still sympathize with the character. In the version I saw, atleast, it felt that way.
