Open Thread #106

My new cat Maeby! Too bad she didn’t come with a sister I could name Surely. Her new favorite game is Catch the Red Laser Dot. My new favorite game is Direct the Laser Dot Back and Forth on the Hardwood Floors so the Cat Slides All Over it Like a Feather Duster on Speed.

    LOL

  2. Maeby! What a cool name.

By the by, would the cat’s Korean name be 매비 or 메비? Generally speaking, wouldn’t it be the latter, since its a romanization?)

    Happy Friday Open Thread JB!

  3. Maeby is gorgeous! Great name, beautiful cat. She looks a lot like my Oscar!

Happy OT Friday, y’all. Seems like it took forever to get here this week.

  4. Maeby looks cute!

Just curious, JB are you Korean? ;)

  5. Haha, an Arrested Development fan.

    I loved that show.

  6. Hi Everyone! Happy Friday :) What a beautiful morning…beautiful enough to inspire me to go for a run…hmm now if only I can find that pair of shoes that been collecting cobweb. This should be interesting!

  7. P.S. Your cat is just too cute!

  8. looks like a shy cat! so cute!!

i have 1.5 pages of this paper to still write and bs (cuz i didn’t outline it before hand) before i haul myself off to class to hand it in and endure a 3 hour discussion/lecture on a topic that I hate. been a hectic last 2 days and i feel like death warmed over (except i’m sort of freezing in the library…and hungry.)

i can’t wait to get out of class, eat lunch/dinner, visit a friend, and then return home to watch episodes 5 and 6 of You’re Beautiful!!

  9. Maeby is absolutely beautiful!

    Thank you for recapping “You’re Beautiful,” it really helps because I can’t watch it now because of school -_-;

  10. I’ve been watching Loving You 1000 times and, well. Loving it!

I forgot how much I adored when the guy liked the girl first, like in Brilliant Legacy.

Plus the guy who plays Kang Ho is friggin hot. He’s got what I like to call an American Football Player’s body, or at least the ones you see on the CW. Tall but not skinny. Not too beefy either. Just. Perfect.

And his hair is fun. I like it.

Fine, I like everything. He’s just very good looking.

  11. Yay! Arrested Development!
    BEST…SHOW…OF…ALL… TIME!!
I’m naming my next dog George Michael, or motherboy… =)

    And Maeby is a cutie!

  12. I like the name Tobias.

  13. loving the song as always!!
    e=mc^2. word, yo.
    … too much physics… XD

maeby is so cute!! white paws are way too cute. :)

cannot wait for next week’s you’re beautiful!!! this show is beyond crack – i don’t even know what it is anymore. it’s just AWESOME >< and javabeans is AWESOME for doing the recaps, and super-fast too~ 감사합니다~!

  14. She’s adorable!

My new favorite game is Direct the Laser Dot Back and Forth on the Hardwood Floors so the Cat Slides All Over it Like a Feather Duster on Speed.

Well, if it saves you time on cleaning… :P

  15. eagerly waiting for the next wednesday, means, another eps of you’re beautiful!
i’m glad that you seemed to like this series too, javabeans. that means, you’ll keep updating about this drama’s status. hehe. watching the series just incomplete without reading your recaps and comments about it.
thanks for all your hardwork, keep up your awesome writing styles!

  16. Spamming you with quotes:

Tobias: Michael, you are not quite the ladies man I had pictured. Hopefully, we will remedy that when we are in the spa spreading body chocolate on each other.

Tobias: Okay, Lindsay, are you forgetting that I was a professional twice over – an analyst and a therapist. The world’s first analrapist.

  17. Awww, cute. But the description of your game with Maeby is putting a psychosomatic tickle in my throat–I’m wildly allergic! Ah-choo!

  18. You’re Beautiful is The Crack, but IRIS is The Awesome. I am officially in love with Jung Joon-ho. And he’s the right age! Can I officially claim him as MINE?

I’m gonna need a bigger house for all these men.

  19. Oh JB. You’ve won my heart forever with your cat name.

  20. I am in love with “You’re Beautiful”!!! I really hope it isn’t emotionally exhausting(although it is starting at ep6) as City Hall/Hana Yori Dango/My Girl. My heart is as painful as MN’s at TK kissing at He-Yi(not to mention so passionately) I should drink more water as well :x

Anyway, I really want to thank you for your recaps! It really save lots of time for me when I’m too busy to watch a drama and I’ll just read your recaps with your songs attached at every post :D

Nice name for a cat! My mother doesn’t allow our family to have a pet hehe. I want to have a pet dog though…and I want to name it Jeremy if it’s a male and Jolie if it’s a female*hint hint*

After my national exams I am going to learn Hangul!!! I think that sometimes English can’t really express those strong feelings in some dramas which is being spoken in another language(E.g. Japanese, Korean and Chinese-although I understand Chinese) BUT your recaps are still wonderful!!!
By learning Hangul, maybe I will not have such a hard time understanding what they are saying and do not have to rely on subs like now >.<

I hardly comment(I'm always a silent reader hehe), so sorry!!! Have a good weekend!!! Can't wait for next Wednesday where there will be a SNSD parody in You're beautiful!! :D :D:D:D:D
    *doki doki*

and again, have a great weekend!!! For me I must study~ =.=

  21. Javabeans! Your cat is soooo adorable! ‘Grats on your new favorite game ;)

  22. JB, what a beautiful cat! And I don’t say that just because I am somewhat partial to cats (and by “somewhat partial to” I mean adore and obsesses over). What a cute name, and maybe at some point you can add a Surely or a Possibly or a Sure Why Not to the family. I hope that she is a cuddler! There is nothing like hand-raised cats who are cuddle-fiends. It’s like your arms and lap are perpetually reserved.

Enjoy your new baby – - they grow up so fast, and then they don’t call or write….

I love the first photo — that’s how I am every week/word day morning, hoping that if I bury my head into a pillow long enough, I won’t have to deal.

Which reminds me: back to the grind…

Thanks for a great blog, and happy Friday.

  23. I Iove IRIS the most.. Lee Byun Heun is a hotteeee!!!!!!!! JB, i hope you’ll continue with the recaps. can’t wait to read your opinion. BTW, i.m also watching you’re beautiful. can’t believe we can watch 2 great drama at the same time…

  24. @18 langdon813 – Oct 23, 2009

You’re Beautiful is The Crack, but IRIS is The Awesome. I am officially in love with Jung Joon-ho. And he’s the right age! Can I officially claim him as MINE?

I know! In total agreement with you! Wed-Thursday have turned into something else for me… All I do all day long on those days is to check if subs(those quick collaborated effort by Viikii people, because of that, I’ve already been recruited and signed onto another Jdrama project, which wasn’t my intention… But, hey, I really do appreciate the fact we can watch them within 24hours after they are aired).

And now, I have to go to work without finishing Iris Episode. 4! I’ll be thinking of it in London for next 3 days… Yikes…

By the way. Jdrama, Tokyo dogs is really good: corny, tacky and hysterical, with Mizushima Hiro and Oguri Shun. It’s sort of J version of Black and White(I LOVED the drama soooooooo much thanks to ockoara and others recommending/raving about it on this site).

  25. Congratulations on the new cat!!! Maeby – welcome to kdramaland!!!

I’m going out on a limb since I don’t recall anyone who has, but I totally and completely claim TOP!!!! MINE!!!!

Drooling at work is so frowned upon, but I couldn’t help it! Watched the promo clip with his scenes and he is smokin!

  26. how heavy is your cat? your cat from where?

    is cat’s Korean name 매비?

  27. as interior designer, my first comment in my head when i saw your pictures : “Wow, Javabeans seems have a nice home.” I like the windows, and your sofa looks comfy. :P

Maeby is really creative name! Congratulations for having a new pet!! Me myself, don’t like the idea of having a pet of any kind.

  28. @23 Thank you so much on the news about Oguri Shun – can’t wait to his new drama!

  29. Aww! I love cats! I have 1 black cat, I’d want to adopt more but our building management only allows 1 cat per unit. :(

I call mine Ambien, because he always makes me fall asleep after a session of cuddling and snuggling. Not good when you’re super late for work.

  30. Happy Friday party people! Awesome kdramas right now mean life is GOOD. Dithering over whether to watch 5+6 of YAB subless – thing is, I can watch it once with subs and THEN watch without, but doing it the other way around and missing things they say hurts my anal heart. Also, do I want to start IRIS (is capitalisation required?), can I stand to wait for a suspense drama? Although, *cough*, have already watched ep2’s kiss scene multiple times. I like how on the kiss vid on YT, a korean I presume lady commented on how Kim Tae Hee has lost her youth and good skin but at least her acting has gotten a bit better. Nice.

Also, as ever, the worries about killing download limits and having to pay extra to the evil that is TalkTalk. Thing is, I honestly wouldn’t mind except that a)that would be encouraging TalkTalk’s mission to rule the world and b)I have student loan to spare, indeed, but I could do it a lot easier if I had a job. Which I would get if a)anyone on this planet thought me a worthy employee for anything and b)my law textbooks loosened their grip on my leash.

  31. Awww, she is SO CUTE! My favourite game has always been Trap the Cat in the Fitted Sheets While Changing the Bed Linens. My cat’s has always been Lay On the Keyboard and Prevent Productivity. I love my baby. :D

I’ve been having boy troubles this past week, and it’s all my own fault. ANGST. How do you (nicely) reject a (very very sweet) guy who once (casually) dated your ex-roommate (with whom you’re still close) and with whom you had one (very fun) date with but for whom you have no feelings for (and haven’t even thought about since said date) and who is insisting on cooking you dinner tonight? Seriously, he seems to really like me, and I’m feeling incredibly guilty for having unintentionally led him on.

I suck at this dating game. Kill me now!

In other news, my mother read a novel last week by a Korean-American author about the Japanese occupation in Korea, and she’s finally managed to pick up some Korean words. XD She still claims she’ll never be able to learn Korean, but that’s okay; I find it amusing (and sweet) that she’s developing an interest for my sake.

Off to class! :D Where I get to learn more about the Chinese Revolution with a (very white) professor who may or may not be a Mao fanboy. Hrm.

  32. @ b020,

lovenyc52 might not accept your claim on TOP as she has already done so in previous OT. just thought you’d like a heads up on the fight ahead. heehee..

i watched part of ep 1 of IRIS this AM and i’m totally loving LBH even more.. he has the most brightening smile and his gaze.. so captivating.. it’s as if he’s looking only at me when the camera closes up on his beautiful face. and the shirtless scenes are just icing. i typically don’t like icing on cake, but lemme lick all the icing on this one. YUMMY!!!

as much as i LOVE LBH’s eyes, i can NOT stand KTH’s. whatever emotion she is trying to portray just always looks evil and scary. she’d make a really scary ghost w/ those eyes. i would actually prefer if she did not emote anything. just stood there and looked pretty. she does that well.. but don’t use your eyes. they still scare me.

and i’m so proud of myself. i remembered OT today. YAY!

  33. My wife absolutely hated cats until Oliver came into our life. He was thrown out of a house down the street because he couldn’t get along with their new dog, and we saw him looking in our doorwall one bitterly cold day. I got her to agree to letting him stay in the garage, and slowly,he edged his way into the house, and into both our hearts. Now she calls him her ‘baby’.

  34. *tickles Maeby*..what a cutie!
i have a couple of kitties too..their favourites games are Play-Dead and they sleep the whole day..

  35. What an adorable cat! And I’m glad it’s Friday…just got of a 2 hr Physical Chem exam. This means, I can finally re-watch You’re beautiful in one go, instead of in middle of study breaks.

You’re Beautiful is definitely addictive and I think I’m in love w/ JGS again (I actually liked him a lot in the first half of HGD, especially his scenes w/KJH). And I know people complain about the eyeliner—but it’s kind of grown on me. ::sigh:: The smile he gave Mi-nyeo in Episode 5 was so so cute! It’ll be interesting to see what happens in the next episode and I really wonder if the reporter is going to stop looking for the “mystery” girl.

What am I going to do until next week? Start Iris? hmm, not a bad idea and they have Soul up on dramafever and I’ve been meaning to watch it…and the timing is kind of perfect since Halloween is next weekend.

    @celestialorigin
I saw that the ratings for the first episode were pretty high and I’m super psyched to see Oguri Shun in this drama (though I think it’s kind of interesting that ever since HanaDan, he’s been a bit typecast as the introverted, quiet, etc person in everything afterwards—though I haven’t seen Binbo Danshi yet)

  36. @34 Taohua

I really liked Soul, I was thinking of watching it again myself. It is creeeeepy!

  37. lol my cat’s new game is throw the hair band under the stove or fridge and watch my parents or I getting it from under there using various long objects, and then after a minute putting it right back inside and repeating the process all over again.

  38. Happy Friday!! Spent last night watching YB and omg…totally cracktastic and i love it..cannot wait for the next one!!! Tried to start Iris ep 3 but was too tired to concentrate and LBH and TOP deserves all my attention.

@b020 – wait wait wait!!!!!!! i love TOP too…. :( can we share? prettttttty please????? i have to admit. i was too tired to watch IRIS last night cuz i spent a good 2 hours watching Big Bang videos, rewatching the Haru Haru MV 89 times and then i went and watched just the TOP clip of this week’s ep. the kid is so bad boy and delish and rocks the manliner like no other.

@celestialorigin – my friend is currently studying in tokyo and says there are giant posters of Tokyo Dogs up everywhere and has been sending me cellphone pics of them haha. i love me some oguri and mizushima!! got too many dramas on my plate right now so this one is on the backburner, but definately gonna watch it!!

@JB – maeybe is too cute!! glad you’re having fun with her hehe.

  39. JB – love your new cat, love the cat’s name (please start posting additions to icanhazcheezburger lolcats), love your favorite cat’s game (ooooh, I’m rhyming by accident), love your apt view with the requisite dissiduous tree outside to mark the changing of the seasons, oh whatever – I think I love you. I hereby proclaim JB my inappopriate girl-crush.

Now that I’ve gotten *that* out of my way – I also think I love You’re Beautiful with the fervor of a thousand hot suns. But I’m kinda too scared to really comment on JB’s recaps, because the comment thread is suddenly crawling with a bazillion folks, and I’m all, woah, and they’re all, squee, and I’m like, I think I’m too old to be fangirly YB with this crowd, but they’re like “poor Shin-woo” “no! Tae-kyung”, and I realize that I’m happily just along for the ride. Was it this crazy during the Boys Before Flowers recap days, folks? I don’t know, I read the recaps then went to bed, never once read a comment.

BTB Samsooki – I am eagerly awaiting the birth of baby Rain AND the return of CH recaps, both, and not one more than the other. I do miss the CH contingent – and I know quite a few stayed around in OT, but it was a fun comment forum after each recap, wasn’t it?

I’m still not on the IRIS watch yet – I’m actually going to pick up the Tamra box set this weekend because I made a long overdue promise to the Islanders that I’d get on the darn ship. And I shall. I really am feeling the cute, sweet, romance drama these days – done intelligently of course.

And lastly, I may be the only dog person here (I have nothing against cats, really), but I haz myself a little shih-tzu named Maru that waves hello to Maeby. He loves cats, cuz he doesn’t realize he’s a canine. He was afraid of the mouse in the house we had one horrible day – poor silly thing.

  40. @lb_tmi – haha!!! i like how we both posted about my love for TOP at the same time… totally didn’t see ur post till after mine was done. and isn’t IRIS great? LBH’s eyes really are totally mesmerizing… watch YB… really. it’s so good. and JGS is kinda really hot. glad you got my back about TOP though.. the fight begins! LOL!!!

  41. Does anyone know when Kim Rae Won, Kim Jae Won and Gong Yoo will return from army duty?

I’d like to see them in a single drama together…..

    Gamble of His Life

Gong Yoo plays a compulsive gambler / alcoholic who purposely dumps the love of his life, Go Hyun-Jung, a bookstore assistant manager, to prevent her from witnessing his downward spiral.

Kim Jae Won is Gong Yoo’s younger brother, a medical doctor, who is patient and devoted to Gong Yoo even in the midst of hard times, not the least because all throughout their childhood, Gong Yoo protected his younger brother from abuse from their late, abusive father.

…and rounding out the cast of male leads is the enigmatic and rakishly handsome and possibly evil Kim Rae Won, a bus driver who drives the regular route that has stops at the hospital and at the rehab center that Gong Yoo regularly finds himself checking back in.

And wouldn’t you know it, but Kim Jae Won and Kim Rae Won both fall for Go Hyun Jung…. shades of My Love Patzzi? Perhaps, but a grittier, more edgy version. Completing the cast is the epitome of dangerous hotness, Ha Ji Won, who plays Go Hyun Jung’s younger, richer, hotter and jealous cousin.

    hehe.

  42. hi fellow OT-ers,
im watching black and white right now and am completely hooked. but i really am not the type to watch mystery/thriller because i get so anxious to find out who’s on who’s side/who kills who that i will go online and search for spoilers. which obviously, ends up ruining the whole experience. alas, black and white has so many mysteries flying around and i am really confuzzled.
so i wanna ask fellow awesome OT-ers who have watched b&w before, (SPOILERS AHEAD) so san lian hui was the mysterious informant who faxed all those things to pi zi? b/c i thought i heard da yan (san lian hui’s big boss’s right hand man) say that it was ah de (the undercover cop) who had access to the bar and gave info to pi zi, and that he will try to find out who it is in san lian hui that was giving tips to ah de to give to pi zi. so now im confused cause i thought the fax number came from da yan’s office, and that san lian hui gave the tips to pi zi so he could succeed in his cop career (since pi zi is the big boss’s son and all)? so is it ah de or san lian hui that gave pi zi all those tips? (END SPOILERS)
i have so many other questions but i think i’ll wait and watch the rest of the drama first and hopefully the questions will be answered.

  43. @38 ockoala

I am eagerly awaiting the birth of baby Rain AND the return of CH recaps, both, and not one more than the other. I do miss the CH contingent – and I know quite a few stayed around in OT, but it was a fun comment forum after each recap, wasn’t it?

    Definitely!

The process of drafting, editing and posting has been re-booted, and the process will not stop until finished!

As for baby Rain, more information will come in the days to follow, I’m sure…

  44. @ 41 annieee

It’s Da-yan who always passed tips to Pi-zi under the authorization of the Chairman. The other discussion is a McGuffin – a misdirection. Just like half the information you are told in B&W.

Enjoy the ride. Just know that you are staring at a current reiging Golden Bell Drama King.

@ belleza (from our back-forth in the last OT)

Thanks for entertaining my musings about the casting of YB in 2004. I love 2009 YB, 2009 JGS as TK, and 2009 PSH as MN, and I’m just savoring the drama as it unfurls.

I also would have paid a pretty penny for HJM to stay on as adult SHG in All In, but then my Byung-hun oppa would have been flayed alive even more after canoodling with a teenage HJM. So, it all worked out in the end.

  45. @ 39 lovenyc52

hey sista from another mista.. i gotta keep you happy if i’m gonna keep me happy. it’s cuz we’re twins and i feel your pain if you’re hurt.. heehee..

i totally need some crack.. i keep saying i’m gonna get me some crack, yet.. i still haven’t started YB. i really want to.. and i already LOVE LOVE LOVE the OST.. i just am not good at shuffling multiple dramas at one time..

PLUS! i’m still preparing for my trip. LESS THAN FOUR WEEKS!!! and i’m off to Thailand. i’ve already started a list of cds and dvds that i NEED to buy when i’m there.

  46. I don’t have time to read the thread at present (as I am late for work, as usual), but…

    @ Samsooki (with a capital S)
No one was expecting that ending of HGD.
    책임?!
꿈깨라….or else, I’ll get JB to sick Maeby on you….hehe ;)
Remember, the Feds are still after you…and as soon as you apply for Ji Hoon’s social security number, they’ll be crashing down your front door with a SWAT team. :P

    @ Sarah
    She’s adorable. :D

  47. @ 41 annieee

B&W was such a rollarcoaster ride.. i LOVED it and got all dizzy all at the same time. the twists and turns are all over the place…

hope you enjoy it as much as i did.. YAY! to Marc and Vic, the directors, producers, and the whole cast of the drama.

  48. @ Samsooki

I think the Kim Wons won’t be back for at least another year – duty still beckons. But Gong Yoo is getting discharged in like 2 months! My sister-in-law is a freakishly devout Gong Yoo fan (I trip over his videos, picture books, everytime I’m visiting her), and if I don’t stop her, she’ll plan a trip to Korea to welcome him back from the Army.

Do you want me to have her shove your screenplay in his hands when she accosts him? He might be intrigued…..and you may have just found your true calling.

  49. Ooh, Black and White talk. I’m giving myself a week or so to rest up after MNIKSS+ watch and rewatch and rewatch YAB+ catch up on kpop stuff+ wonder yet again whether I should watch s3 of Veronica Mars when it’s proclaimed by so many to be suckish… and then B&W is next on my to-watch list. Oh ZaiZai, you beautiful, beauuuutiful thing. *drool* Also I still find it hard to make myself stop thinking him and Barb won’t get married someday. Speaking of Barb, last time I saw her was with Show Luo interviewing Kim Sun Ah on MNIKSS – talk about an unexpected fandom collision! Show was quiet though, sorta rocking next to Barb with this ’should I say something now?’ look on his face. I hope SO MUCH Shanghai Sweethearts is good, I think Rainie’s osm and I LOVE Show, he can do no wrong in my eyes.

  50. @hjkomo

    1. It’s a capital S because I’m logged into wordpress and unfortuantely, I cannot change the wordpress login from uppercase to lowercase. I would have to log out of wordpress and then make sure my handle is lowercase, etc.

    2. It looks like you aren’t going to take chae-gim (책임) for not warning me about Ep 24 of HGD. Therefore, I will bring it back up for next week’s open thread. LOL!

    Here’s what happened:

me: “oh wow, HGD is sooooo awesome. I hope that everybody lives happily ever after!”

hjkomo: “oh yeah, you have totally nothing to worry about, it’s a beautiful ending.”

(then, with that promise in hand, we watch HGD’s ep 24)

me: “wow, that TOTALLY was unexpected.”

hjkomo: “I’m not taking responsibility! lalalalalala!”

  51. @ockoala -

Gong Yoo might be one of my fav actors. Being Choi Han Gyul in CP…. hard to argue with how good of a job he did.

    Can’t wait for 2 months!

  52. random:
did anyone watch ALL ABOUT STEVE?

  53. omg…I totally thought Rain was pregnant. O.o

    Backing out now… .

  54. @ ockoala and lb_tmi
thanks ockoala, for the clarification. i just rewatched the part i was talking about and they were indeed talking about some other event that i dont remember cause a gazillion things happened and they’re all interconnected and…im just spinning around and around in circles hahaha.
i am really conflicted right now b/c i want to finish b&w asap so i find out all the answers, but at the same time i dont want such a crazy-ass thriller to end. what will i watch afterwards to fill in the gap? (ANOTHER SPOILER) did you guys find the transition from chen lin liking ying xiong to liking pi zi kinda weird? i mean, didnt she crush over ying xiong like mad? how did she all of the sudden switch over to pi zi? and this whole sibling romance thing is actually pretty sick (and overused in dramas). granted, they didnt know, but still. it’s odd that u would ever fall for ur half-brother. totally cant happen in real life. i actually ship chen lin and pi zi, but since they’re siblings they cant be together, which is oh so sad. :( ( (END SPOILER)

  55. @ 38 ockoala

Of course you are not the only dog person here, I have two, buds a japanese spitz mix and diana a yellow lab. They have opposite temperaments, buds is only friendly to both of us (hubby) and ferocious to everyone else. However, Diana is the quintessential friendly labrador, muy carinyoso. She is very popular to the neighborhood kids, specially when we play catch the tennis ball.

Thank you Javabeans for your recap of YB. In my part of the world I would check your site in the office computer on a Thursday and Friday around lunch time (11:30 to 12:30pm) and bingo! its posted. I would read/scan it quickly go to lunch and then open it again and savor the beautiful drama, that YB is!! If the big boss is not doing her rounds I would sneak again and read the comments.

Maraming salamat, love you love your blog.

  56. cute!

my sisters and i also got a kitten from the animal shelter this february since we missed our dogs in korea and felt that a kitten would be easier. she loves playing the laser dot tag, too.

  57. Is anyone watching Love and Obsession? it’s crazy good!! in every episode, there is something going on.

  58. Do any of the streaming sites have a good quality version of Brilliant Legacy?

I don’t have the space to download.

  59. @ xiahkixiri

i totally know which video clip u’re talking about!! its funny cause i was into kdramas before getting into the taiwan entertainment industry. so i watched that interview with kim sun ah after watching MNIKSS and didnt even realize the interviewers were show and barbie. years later, i fell in love with show luo (also another coincidential thing xp), and rewatched the interview clip, and saw show with my fav korean actress sun ah, and i was like, clashing fandomsss! hahaha show wasnt the main host back then, so he didnt say much. but omg, show is so different now its hard to imagine lol.
i am sooo excited for shanghai sweetheart (whose official eng name is now hi my sweetheart)!!! did u watch all the trailers and stuff? funniest shizz ever!! and they’re airing a bts special this sunday. i think SS will be a crack-tastic drama. and of course, anything with show in it i will watch : )

  60. @lb_tmi – lol. we totally are twins!! just cuz we’re a few years and few thousand miles apart doesn’t make us less of twins. the proof is in how we have all the same #2s LOL!! YB is gonna be the show that i watch on the plane over to taiwan this year. it’s THAT fun haha.. that and TOP haha. but maybe it’s better if you wait till it’s done airing to watch.. it’s kinda sorta killing me, waiting each week haha. but but but…nono, watch now so we can talk about it ahha!!!

@annieee – i’m so glad you’re enjoying the B&W rollercoaster!! it really was such a rush watching it the first time around…

  61. @53 annieee –

    B&W SPOILER!!!!!!

chen lin didn’t really like ying xiong to begin with i don’t think. she just told that to pi zi cuz he kept asking if she liked ying xiong cuz he ’saved’ her, so she was like ‘fine! yes i do! i like him a lot ok?!’, but in reality she liked pi zi. i think she said it out of frustration cuz he didn’t get that he was the one she liked.. well that’s my take on it anyway. i could be totally off haha..

    END B&W SPOILER!!!!

  62. @ 57 Syren

Dramafever.com. they now have Shining Inheritance/Brillant Legacy up.

    @ 53 annieee

here’s my take on the chen lin/pi zi thing.. it’s not a spoiler for you, but for others, i’m just gonna put the warning anyway…

    ::B&W SPOILER::
chen lin didn’t “fall for” Hero. she fell for the warm back that carried her out of the subway. when pi zi didn’t correct who she *thought* carried her to safety, she let her feelings go towards Hero. but when she realized that it was actually pi zi, she was able to distinguish her feelings for Hero weren’t really for Hero, but were for pi zi to begin with. so that’s why she can change the way she acts towards the two men.. because she never really did change her feelings.. she was just directing it to the wrong person.
    ::END SPOILER::

that wasn’t even really a spoiler, huh?

  63. @ annieee

Remember, everything in B&W is not what it seems: I would continue to ship Chen Lin-Pi-zi if that’s your ship. I did not find her sudden transition to Pi-zi so jarring, because she was all superficially attracted to Yin-xiong’s hot-bloodedness, but really, Pi-zi is the one she bickers, squabbles, and fusses over – and we all know that means true love in drama speak.

I watched the first 12 episodes of B&W in one sitting, I didn’t sleep until I fell asleep watching, that’s how addicting it was, I totally understand how you feel. Keep watching, you don’t know nothin’ yet.

    @ 48 xiahkixiri

Veronica Mars – you should watch Season 3. Any episode from VM is better than 99.9% of the shows on-air right now. But yes, S3 is nowhere near the brilliance of the perfectly crafted S1 (OMG, I may just feel a VM S1 marathon coming up), but it’s pretty good at transitioning Veronica to college. But I am such a LoVe shipper that any season that ends without LoVe in bed and canoodling is depressing for me. Logan is the human equivalent of Spike, and I can just swoon over those bad boys all day long.

  64. @ annieee: OMG GRABBY HANDS, I didn’t know the trailer was out! (GRR, I liked the old title better), link me prz? Typing the right thing into YT for Taiwanese dramas is so problematic omg. I’m sure it’s going to be cracktastic (OMG@ the promo pics! That hair is Epic), but my worry is OTT headache crack or AMAZING crack? It’s such a shame tw variety shows aren’t really subbed, I just got linked to a YT user who subs Show stuff this week and was like O__O!!! I LOVED that story about how he likes to roll down his window when he drives by a city bus and tease fans. <3333 He is so amazing, IDEK. It makes me angry how he seems to get so much shit from the press for no reason; how is it possible to dislike him?

  65. @ lovenyc52

we did it again!!! posted at the same time AND to the same person AND had almost the same response!!! dang this twins telepathy.. it’s really strong, huh?

i totally have to load a TON of stuff onto my mp3 so i can listen to all my music on the plane AND watch vids.. even if the screen is a whole 1.5″. lol.

  66. @annieee – ha, ok lb_tmi and ockoala’s explanations make more sense than mine does. i retract my earlier statement LOL!!!

  67. @lb_tmi – people don’t know…the power of the twins. we are a dangerous pair LOL!!

  68. @ ockoala: Yes, LoVe is the other reason, I just know bad, bad, baaaaaad things are going to happen to my ship. I ship them SO EFFING HARD and Logan is just such a prince with his big softie to his women heart and his snarky comment for every occasion. The Logan/Weevil detention ep was so LOL, they were totally my win slash pairing. Also Veronica/Wallace friendship was SO OSM, I love me a boy/girl BFFs with an awesome relationship that doesn’t need to go romantic for it to be epic setup so much, I allllmost love them more than LoVe.

  69. @53
I agree with you the switch in romance interest was sort of abrupt, although there were plenty of hints along the way. Hunk #1 (the original crush) seemed like a very brief and shallow sort of attachment. Hunk #2 (the eventual crush) had our favorite kind of relationship: dislike but somehow can’t look away. Black and White was such a mass of confusion for most of the show but that was what made it so good. For those who are still watching it: keep going, it gets better!

I am interested Shanghai Sweetheart and am planning to watch it when it airs. But, I really hope it won’t fall into a massive silliness. I tried watching Momo Love but just couldn’t stand it. (although I know some who seemed to love it so don’t take my words for it.)

Currently, my drama watching has been more focused on Korean shows. Loving You’re Beautiful and trying hold myself back from watching IRIS so I am only addicted to one show at a time, but the “kiss” that have been mentioned so many times here is making my resolve weakening. :-)

  70. @ 68 jtinma: you could just do what I did and go watch the kiss on YT.

  71. What a cool name for a cat. I love cats with white paws. Tobias sounds cool too. Something very Oscar Wilde about it.

I am thinking of naming my next cat Anjuma or Ajushi depending on the sex. By the way I still haven’t figured out how to tell whether a cat is male or female. For the longest time we thought our cat (from a shelter) was a boy and after 5 years a friend checked him out and said he was a girl. But now another friend is positive she’s a boy. We still haven’t gotten around to resolving the issue.
I also don’t like KTH’s eyes. They are classic Asian horror films eyes. When she got miffed with LBH in the restaurant she gave him this deadly stare. It was chilling.
I have new found respect for LBH the actor. I have been paying too much attention to his looks, smile, and voice. I have just realized how much respect he has for his craft and gives his best in every scene. I felt sorry for him for the corny cheesy love scenes he had to do for Iris. I could feel his soul cringing and wincing.

  72. hello! Happy Friday everyone! ^-^

“My new favorite game is Direct the Laser Dot Back and Forth on the Hardwood Floors so the Cat Slides All Over it Like a Feather Duster on Speed.”
LOL! YEAH! AND YOU WILL ALSO HAVE ONE SHINY , DUST-LESS HARDWOOD FLOOR!

waahhh! Langdon is claiming JJH and b020 is claiming TOP! ok, ok, when everybody’s tired of ‘em, bring them all to me! ^-^
In the meantime, i will drool over other hot guys…. ^-^

oohhh… love the drama “love you 1000x” too! ^-^

geez, been busy watching 3 dramas this month! (am not complaining…just that my eyebags are getting darker and darker and its not from working…lol)

  73. @ 66 lovenyc52

power of the twins??? that just sounds so dirty on all levels. especially when in regards to us. LOL.

    @ annieee

i totally agree w/ jtinma… definitely keep watching.. B&W gets better and BETTER. it’s actually my fave drama this year.

  74. Ohhh, your cat is just precious!!!

I had a cat last year – his name was Oreo (named for his black and white with large circle prints on his fur). The cutest thing ever, wild and quite the Ladies Man ~lol but had to give him away. I learned how hard it is to take care of a pet, especially kittens, they really need time to be trained and feel comfortable but as a college student, I couldn’t give him the time and its frustrating have a wild little kitten while you are stressed out about school and work.

Anyway, your post reminds me about him, I really miss my kitty, I hope he’s doing well and has found a good home!

  75. Maeby! Awwww. When I read your cat’s name immediately thought ‘Arrested Development!’ JB you really have great taste. Perhaps someone out there has the maybe cousin of Maeby and named it George Michael? I would like to meet Uncle GOB in a cat form…..hehehe

Gee I was trying to avoid ‘You’re Beautiful” recaps….but failed! I read it like the crack that it is, and OMG now I have parted ways (temporarily) with LBH (IRIS) and Binnie (Friends, Our Legend) and grabbed the raw eps of You’re Beautiful! I am sensing that YB will be like my BoFcrack for the tail end of 2009. But with better acting.

    Samsooki
I was being to wonder why there was a ’samsooki’ and a ‘Samsooki’ in the OT. Was thinking is that the papa ‘Samsooki’ and ’samsooki’ is the genius baby RAIN already out and typing his love of kdrama??? Now I know they are both papa Samsooki. PS love your screenplay! Is there a Samsooki screenplay site? LMAO

    Happy OT everyone!

  76. @71 sonam

i somehow feel vindicated that someone else agrees w/ me about KTH’s eyes. “horror film eyes” she is.

  77. @70 Sonam

If after 5 years you can’t tell if your cat is a boy, then she’s definitely a girl! ;-)

    IRIS SPOILERS

I don’t find the romantic scenes on IRIS to be cheesy at all…I find myself rather faint and swoony, actually! I don’t hate KTH at all…I really like her character and I think the chemistry between her and LBH is pretty awesome. I got a huge kick out of her super secret agent persona turning all girly-girl and demanding a gift from her boyfriend. And when he kissed her and put the candy in her mouth? OMG. Some people might think it was gross, but LBH can feed me like that any time he wants to.

    END SPOILERS

I do get what people are saying about KTH’s eyes, though. They are rather snake-like, almost.

Hmmm…and Storm Shadow IS the mortal enemy of Snake Eyes. Just sayin’.

  78. ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT! Greatest show ever. EVER.

  79. LOVE the song “ENERGY”…………………..

  80. I tried to watch You’re Beautiful but I hate Park Shin-hye’s character. She reminds me of Yi Nok from Hong Gil Dong and I hated that drama because I couldn’t stand the female lead. I hate when the heroines are portrayed as TSTL.

Oh well, I’ve got Smile You and more than enough jdramas than I can handle.

  81. LMAO @ poor Kim Tae Hee. I’ve only seen her in act in her pre-ep2kiss dialogue, and… her eyes don’t seem evil to me, doesn’t she have Korea’s beloved smiling eyes? Yno who I think has seeerusly creepy eyes? Seungyeon from Kara. Like she’s almost always smiling and the eyes go smiley then too but they’re so creepy and when she doesn’t smile she looks reallllllllly scary. They’re kinda like wee widl tadpoles. CREEPY EYES, SHE HAS THEM.

  82. @ 68 xiahkixiri

I more than love LoVe, don’t worry about the ending of VM season 3, in my mind – Logan grows up from a rich punk-ass, adorably snarky softie, to a quippy, snarky, real world counterpart FBI handler in disguise, whose charge is non other than the love of his life, Veronica Mars, newly minted FBI agent.

They may quibble all day long, but the cases get cracked and LoVe lives on forever with each other. No one can convince me otherwise. They are the *perfect* soulmates. Though when Duncan left V, and he left the letter that said “True Love Stories Never Have Endings,” I cried, because Duncan was Veronica’s first love. But that message on that note will always always mean Logan and Veronica.

  83. Oooh, someone compared Logan to Spike?

Hmm. I’m gonna be spending the rest of my day drawing up similarities between them.

Interesting because I loved Spike by himself and with Buffy. I loved him more by himself as a character. IE, if Spike wasn’t with Buffy, I’d have been fine with that, he was such a compelling character on his own.

However with Logan, I only enjoyed him with Veronica. I felt that without Veronica, he wasn’t enjoyable. In fact, I really hated him when he wasn’t with Veronica.

To me, Veronica was Logan’s saving grace. He needed her to be well-adjuster, normal and whatever. Spike was fine on his own.

Which is weird to say because Spike is a vampire and Logan is a normal human but. . .

Without Veronica, Logan would just be your simple entitled, racist, rich boy. Hell, even with Veronica he was like that, she just toned it down in him.

(BTW I did do a Veronica Mars Season 1 rewatch this past week. I watched the last few episodes of Season 1. *sigh* Nostalgia)

  84. omo already seventy five comments..and its first time i have catched OT this early…at my place its 1:15 am(saturday)…normally when i come to OT it used to be over 150 posts …i enjoy going through(sneak) all the comments during my office hrs hehe..guess i will be fired if i get caught but i like to take risk you know life without OT on saturdays (at my place) are dull hehe.

After discovering OT i found i am not the only one with one daughter who drools over the hunks …lol…annyeo chingu’s

as everyone loving YB …haven’t started Iris yet …i think i will wait for all ep to finish and then do marathon… also watching smile you,i am enjoing it .

For whom who loved Vic in BLACK & WHITE do check his drama MARS…its really really good drama …actually i became his fan after watching mars

i need to sleep now…catch you guys tommorow again

  85. I credit the Logan hotness to the sizzling chemistry Kristen Bell has with all her co-stars. Seriously, the chemistry between them crackled.

The Prom scene? Where Logan calls their story ‘epic’? CRAZY.

The dance scene where ‘Sway’ plays in the background and Logan and Veronica dance together but it’s all hesitant because they’re not sure how they feel about each other yet? SIZZLING. I almost felt as if the camera stayed on them a second too long, as if I were viewing a private moment.

The Veronica/Logan OTP is the one that ultimately reminds me that what I see and am attracted to on-screen will not be what I’m attracted to in real life. I would never ever ever date a Logan Echolls. EVER. Never ever. I still couldn’t believe Veronica forgave him for all the shit he pulled. Yet, they got together and it was OTP beauty.

(Now Spike? I’d totally date him in real life)

  86. @ mishane

Spike v. Logan – that was me, it was a superficial glossing of their characters, but I agree with you in the end, Logan without Veronica is no one special. Spike without Buffy I would watch kick ass anyday.

However, neither Spike nor Logan without Buffy or Veronica, respectively, are redeemable – we only love them because there is Spuffy and LoVe. That’s drama pairing elevated to the epic level, dont’cha agree?

“(BTW I did do a Veronica Mars Season 1 rewatch this past week. I watched the last few episodes of Season 1. *sigh* Nostalgia)”

IMHO, the last few episodes of VM Season 1 are beyond description for being such compelling, amazing, engrossingly mesmerizing TV. It’s on par with the Angel turns bad after sleeping with Buffy episodes for sheer weight of the revelations and pathos.

“A Trip to the Dentist” stands alone as my ALL TIME favorite VM episode. How can you not watch that episode, with a bazillion amazing performances by every single side player in VM Season 1 (including a young Leighton Meester – check it out!), a Rashomon flashback sequence, and Veronice sleeping with Duncan *and* making out with Logan (btw, it’s amazingly sweet but not sleazy, the way it unfurled, trust me, non VM-watchers).

‘The Prom scene? Where Logan calls their story ‘epic’? CRAZY.”

Yes, yes, yes, gah, I feel my heart constricting – LoVe is still freaking paining me three years after it’s been cancelled! Kristen Bell’s chemistry was only with Jason Dohring as Logan. Duncan/Teddy Dunn – ehh, not so much, there was some to make their pairing palatable and interesting in the beginning, until Logan steading walked closer and closer to Veronica, and the world tilted on its axis until you and I cannot imagine V not with L.

And yes, NO girl should, would, could ever date a Logan Echolls, that’s like signing a death of the heart warrant – unless that girl is Veronica Mars.

  87. @_@ is it wrong to already be completely hooked on iris? i love the ost!!!!!!!! omg!! they have such good songs and i love the main theme lmao it made me tear up a bit in the last episode
    the cast is awesome!!!

  88. @ ockoala – Okay I’m totally with you on denial fronts (ending of Snow Queen, OMG – last 2 eps never happened kthnx), but I’ll have to sit through breakupage first. *facepalm* They like to repeat the seasons on E4 and I tuned in about 2 weeks ago and S3 was playing, and I changed it after 5 minutes because I was still on 4, and there was a beach, and logs or something, and VERONICA WASN’T SITTING ON LOGAN’S ONE. She was next to some other guy and this spelt baaaad things in my mind.

@ mishane: Logan and Spike? Hmm.. I have yet to watch Buffy fully but OMG such a Spuffy shipper, such, SUCH a Spuffy shipper. All the seasons scare me a bit so I haven’t done it yet but when I found out the show I used to watch on TV was the early airing and therefore censored… I must disagree with you on Logan, though. He wasn’t with V for most of S2 but I still loved him. The things in his life went from bad to worse when she broke up with him, but he was resilient even if self-destructive, and I really, really love that in a person, guy or not. I may have loved him just for the fab oneliners but it was really impressive to me that with all the screwups in his life, Lilly, his dad, his BFF and V both separately and together, the murder, the outcome of his dad’s trial, sorta his sister (I squealed so hard at Willow and Cordelia on the screen together, LMAO), he managed to be functional. Actually at the beginning of S1 I didn’t like Logan because I thought he had a sleazy smile; boy did i grow to love the snark behind that smile.

  89. Congrats on your new kitty. You just have to love cats they are so much fun. We got our new kitten the weekend B&W finished. Since the kitten is b&w I just had to name him Pi Zi. Luckily the name fits, he’s such a ruffian. Although when he goes into hyper-drive (at 3 am), in that totally kitten way,I have thought that we really should have named him Damn it.

  90. @ 86 ockoala

Yes, A Trip To The Dentist was amazing. Not a boring moment in that episode. I know people didn’t like Teddy Dunn (although what happened between him and fandom, I’m still really embarrassed and upset at) but that scene where Veronica goes to his house to confront him and he breaks down and she’s breaking down is just pure beauty.

Season 2 had it’s ups and downs with me. I loved the bitter interactions between Veronica and Logan but thought Logan was the biggest asshat for hooking up with Cordelia Chase and Tiny Blonde One. Interesting because I think Veronica dated other people that she was genuinely interested in (the disaster that was Piz was weird but I could see her reasoning behind it) while it felt that Logan’s love life was purely directed to bring him back to Veronica, or for other non-love related reasons.

However, neither Spike nor Logan without Buffy or Veronica, respectively, are redeemable – we only love them because there is Spuffy and LoVe.

You are very very correct there. I think Spike would have stayed mainstream enjoyable without Spuffy but Spike love elevated after he started having feelings for her. (I’d really like to ask Joss Whedon when he decided to do that pairing, because I noticed sparks between them starting in Season 3, I think)

With Logan, if Lily never died, I wonder what would have happened between him and Veronica. I mean, Lily and Logan would never have been a permanent thing and Veronica and Logan seemed to be friends already. I wonder if things would have eventually have led there, especially with the angst Duncan was doing on decided whether or not Veronica was his sister (OMG I sound like I’m describing a k-drama!).

    Long comment.

  91. @89 trixicopper

i like that name. maybe i’ll name my next kid that instead. i was gonna go for “Tree” cuz i’ve never met anyone w/ that name. and i already like Bird and my hubby’s a Cow, and my daughter is a Bug. but Damn it seems like it’ll be more appropriate. lol.

  92. @ lovenyc52 – hmmm, IDK if I can share TOP….but if you sat through the painful drama that was I Am Sam…then we can share,

  93. Korean stars who have beautiful eyes from my point of view. To name a few.

Lee Hyori I totally get it when guys go crazy for her. Her eyes are wide set, sexy, lively, naughty and fun. I am a girl but I think she could easily seduce me.

Kim Hyun joo Warm, limpid expressive eyes. I loved how her eyes got all teasing, mocking when she is berating LDW in Partner.

Son Ye jin Warm lively eyes like Kim Hyun Joo.

Lee Young Ae Beautiful All Asian classic almond eyes.

Chae Rim I have a weakness for wide set eyes.

I think eyes should be expressive. Big eyes doesn’t automatically mean beautiful for me. That’s why I don’t like KTH and Shin Mina’s eyes . Something so vacant and doll like behind the dazzling smiles. Feels like there’s nothing behind the eyes. Not hating on these girls. They seem like perfectly nice ladies.

  94. @ mishane

Gah, work is gonna wait, I sense an amazing Logan/Spike discussion forthcoming today….

    1. Spike – James Marsters had amazing chemistry with Sarah Michelle Geller, agreed, end of discussion. We were all shipping Angel-Buffy so hard in Season 2 (okay, seriously, all Spuffy shippers started out as Angel-Buffy shippers, but we were not blinded to the fact that Angel up and LEFT Buffy and turned all bloated down in LA, and really, the world was darker, more dirty, when Buffy hooked up with Spike and we can’t help but ship that grittier, more adult relationship, however dysfunctional it was).

I first sensed chemistry in Season 3 when Spike returned to LA after Dru left him for some demon in S. America. But the episode in Season 4 when Willow casts a spell that makes Buffy and Spike go get married – that was the turning point. Riley was already a giant comforter, but I knew that Joss Whedon knew and was headed in that direction. But the man took his time, 2 long years to be exact, before the glory that was “Smashed” aired. OMG, I can still vividly recall with my mind’s eye that hot sex in a smashed building sequence…..

    2. Logan

“With Logan, if Lily never died, I wonder what would have happened between him and Veronica.”

Yes, the largest what-if in VM is “what if Lily never died.” If Lily never died, Veronica would have so many what-ifs – remember, she was already dumped by Duncan b/c the silly boy thought she was his half-sister (folks, k-drama watchers, you have to watch VM, it’s got the k-drama plot points up the wazoo), but she didn’t know how to deal with it. If Lily never died, V would still be a cheerleader, but she may have turned destructive like Lily, and there would never be the emotionally scarred Veronica to find her soulmate in the emotionally abused Logan.

I like to think, Lily’s death was, is, always meant to be the catalyst for the world of Neptune to change, even if it was little by little.

  95. Re: OTP’s and US TV

I always wonder what makes the writers decide to go with an OTP.

IE Dawsons Creek. You’d assume that Dawson would end up with the girl since he is the titular character, but not so. If anything, he became more unlikeable as seasons passed.

IE Veronica Mars. I wonder if Logan was the endgame during that first season. I think I remember reading somewhere that he wasn’t, but then the writers saw the chemistry between him and Kristen Bell and decided to keep it.

IE BtVS. Seriously Spike? I mean, where did it come from? My shipper heart was happy because I thought he was awesome but I never ever thought it would actually come to fruition. I thought I was stuck reading fanfic for the rest of my life. WHEN DID YOU DECIDE THIS JOSS, WHEN??

I’m trying to think of more that I questioned. Like Monica/Chandler??

I remember going on Television Without Pity and reading the Dawsons Creek recaps for Season 3 and reading how the recappers were reading into the Pacey/Joey interactions. And then when it finally happened, it was like a sigh of relief.

  96. @ 94 ockoala

Angel up and LEFT Buffy and turned all bloated down in LA,

I lol’d at bloated. David Boreanez (sp?) did bloat up!

OMG SOMETHING BLUE!!! I WATCHED AND REWATCHED THAT EPISODE SO SO SO SO MANY TIMES. It’s actually one of my favorite episodes. I still remember watching it, then going to my computer, going to Yahoo!Search and typing in “Buffy and Spike”. And thus got introduced to fanfic, lol.

Ahh, Smashed. That sound of the zipper. I’m almost surprised they kept that it. It just sounded so DIRTY. And then James Marsters face? And SMG’s face? *fans self* Hold on, need to get a drink.

  97. @b020 – haha so we’re gonna hafta fight for TOP huh? alright, i’m ready! *rolls up sleeves* lol… no, i haven’t watched I Am Sam.. painful eh? no thanks. i gave up on sitting through painful dramas awhile back.. i’ll stick with IRIS and the hot badboyness of MY TOP haha!! toldya i’d fight :)

  98. @mishane – omg those episodes… those legendary episodes… The first time i watched Something Blue I was…shocked. but i LOVED it.. spike being all pouty is hilarious.. And the disgust of everyone around them was priceless. Then came Smashed and all fluffy images of Spike left me and we’re just left with raw hotness.

  99. @96 &94 – I totally agree, “Smashed” was hot & sexy!! The three major sex/love scenes on BtVS were all so well done! When Angel/Buffy had sex for the first time – I loved how Joss guided our imaginations with sound and light and a few flashes. Major twist at the end just made it even more heartbreakingly beautiful.

“Smashed” will probably be my favorite of all times because it was wrong, dirty, sexy, and so very combustible. It made me feel like I was watching soft porn!!!(not that I watch porn:-P)

  100. Re: Neptune without Lily.

I don’t know. I think the friendship would have disintegrated between Veronica / Lily. Knowing how innocent Veronica was, I think Lily’s wildness would have escalated to a point where Veronica wouldn’t have been able to keep up.

I can’t speak for Veronica/Logans romance in a world with Lily because. . .well, it was all that aftermath that made them so perfect for each other. Without it, I don’t know. Maybe they might have dated casually or stayed really good friends, but I doubt their love would have been epic.

Speaking of epic, there’s this AMAZING fanfic that I read where it continues the story as if Lily never died. I mean, there was a lot of fic written about this, but this topped all of them. It’s amazing and pretty much how I think things would have gone down if Lily hadn’t died. It’s called Broken Things (http://community.livejournal.com/veronicamarsfic/248315.html). I haven’t read it in ages but I remember being totally awed by it. I do remember it was sexual (like the majority of fanfic). But it did go into how life would be without Lily. Kind of dark at times. Over 9000 words.

I have COUNTLESS Veronica Mars fic recs if anyone wants. I started in the Buffy fandom and made my way to Veronica Mars. Both have really good writers. I was just re-reading one of my favorite Veronica/Logan fics (still a work in progress). This one doesn’t have sex in it but it’s kind of a re-write of Season 1 where Logan just becomes this HUGE HUGE asshole and then realizes what a huge asshole he is and tries to make it up to Veronica, who isn’t having any of it. It’s touching and sad and revealing. I love it.

  101. @97 – Its on!

  102. Re: Broken Things

Yeah, it gets pretty NC-17 in the first part but if you keep reading it kind of tapers off and you find out why Veronica and Lily don’t stay friends anymore and the aftermath of Lily’s self destruction.

  103. @ mishane, lovenyc52, b020

I think we four need to re-watch Smashed (and Wrecked, as well – we can’t have hot sex without watching the aftermath) and Something Blue this weekend, alright? Kinda like a sisterhood of the traveling Spike show.

    @ mishane

Oooh, there is LoVE fanfic? I’m gonna start reading now!

As for the OTP – some of my favorite pairings are OTP, all the above you mentioned, of course. Plus the OTP pairing of Lee Byung-hun and Choi Ji-woo in Beautiful Days. Gotta shout out to k-dramas, of course.

I think when a savvy writer knows the chemistry is there, you just have to run with it, you know? Logan – it just was meant to be with Veronica, but was not scripted that way when the show started.

  104. can we see a picture of you :)

  105. Congrats on your new cat, javabeans! ^_^ So happy to learn that you’re a cat lover too, we need more of them! Maeby looks adorable <3 And she's got white socks, how sweet. How old is she?

  106. @ ockoala, lovenyc52, lb_tmi, and everyone else who loves b&w

i think all of ur interpretations were insightful! thanks alot u guys, u ppl make the awesomest drama recommendations and make drama viewing so much more fun! and javabeans is super cool for creating this platform for all asian drama addicts to discuss and spazz hahaha. now that i think about it, it makes sense, given chen lin was crushing over the person who saved her, who was actually pi zi.
i am definitely gonna keep watching cause it just keeps getting gooder and gooder! lol

    @ jtinma

regarding SS, honestly, im not too fond of tw dramas b/c practically all of them fall into that absurd silliness category. i refuse to watch most of the tw dramas out there. but i think SS will get us more emotionally invested later on when show’s character changes into a playboy and wants to take revenge on rainie.

    @ xiahkixiri

ok, are u ready for this? ppl at show’s fan forum compiled all possibly related links on SS, but they’re not subbed : ((( i’ll link u to the trailers and stuff that dont really need subs to understand it hahaha

omg, that story. oh how i wished i was on the bus that passed by his car. haha
show is too awesome for words. if i continue spazzing over him, this post would get really long lol. but seriously, im sick of the goddam press always making up lies and picking on him (arent the tw media afraid of getting sued for libel???). and the fact that his record company doesnt put enough effort or money into making his albums/singer-related activities. but thats a whole other story.
oh, and i’ll throw in a fb fanpage for SS. http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/pages/hai-pai-tian-xin/192666757984?ref=nf

  107. Meow…meow….meow….Dramabeans meow….when can we have the IRIS meow meow ep2? ^^

  108. So I just had the best SPICY ramen for lunch ;-) and am thoroughly enjoying the Spike/Logan commentary. What a great way to spend an afternoon.

I wouldn’t dream of leaving…except I still have to watch Ep 4 of IRIS!

  109. srry if im spamming, but does anyone know what “your comment is awaiting moderation” means? is it cause my post is too long so i have to edit it or?

  110. @ 103 ockoala

    OMG are you kidding me?

Sorry OT, you’re about to be spammed with L/V fanfic recs.

Okay. One of my favorites. There’s a prequel and a sequel. The prequel is called “Sleep, Perchance. . .” and can be found here (http://wily-one24.livejournal.com/87424.html). This one is PG-13. No sex. Basically? Logan is an asshole. Veronica is an outcast. He keeps treating her like shit and then. . .starts feeling bad about it. But it’s kind of too little too late. I love this one for the interactions between the two and for Logan’s confusion on how he feels about Veronica. This one was so popular that the writer decided to write more. The rest of the series is called “. . .to dream” and is basically Logan’s pursuit of Veronica and Veronica deciding if she can actually trust Logan. I swear, it’s beautifully written. Makes me heart stop each time I read it (http://community.livejournal.com/veronicamarsfic/1542463.html). This will be a long read. I mean, each chapter is about 10,000 words, I think.

I’m trying to find more PG-13 stuff. If you want more ’sexy’ recs, then I can give those too.

‘Open Up’ by alocalband is pretty good (http://community.livejournal.com/veronicamarsfic/22088.html). alocalband also wrote ‘Pay To The Order Of’ (http://community.livejournal.com/veronicamarsfic/38194.html) and ‘Quiet’ (http://community.livejournal.com/veronicamarsfic/350863.html).

Sinaddict is an AMAZING writer. I love all her stuff. She tends to write more NC-17 stuff but it’s usually kind of deep and creepy. She delves more into the uncommon. NOT fluff. I think she wrote for Buffy also, but I don’t remember much of her work there. I found one of hers that was R-rated, called ‘Inertia Creeping’ (http://sinaddict.livejournal.com/26035.html). Honestly, I’d rec all her stuff, but again, most are very sexual.

Theohara also wrote ‘Rich Dirt’, an AU version of Shelly’s party (http://community.livejournal.com/veronicamarsfic/242465.html)

Okay, and now I’m freaking out. There was this amazing fic that went more into the Logan/Duncan friendship and rivalry and Veronica ends up in a coma and it’s a great bonding story between the two but I can’t find it. GRR.

I have a billion of these recs.

  111. I’m kind of happy that Asian dramas don’t have fic because then that’d be more obsession. I did read one or two Hana Yori Dango fics that were pretty good. I’m a picky fic reader, since I’ve been reading fic since I was 11.

Talking about reading, just bought the book ‘House Of Leaves’ from B&N. Am very excited because apparently this book fucks your mind up. It’s about a house where the inside is bigger than the outside but the way the book is laid out is weird, almost like an e.e. cummings poem. Some pages will only have two words on it, some has upside down words. It’s not in a normal format. Am very very excited to read it.

lol, just in case you guys thought all I read is fanfic. I actually haven’t read fanfic in years but I do keep a list of favorites if I ever want to re-visit.

    @ 108 Annie

I think it’s if your comment has a lot of links in it

  112. Re: Asian drama OTP’s.

I find that it’s hard to get heavily invested in an OTP. Because there’s only 16 episodes or so, it’s over pretty fast. You don’t get that long history with it. Also, since I watch k-dramas after they air, I can usually watch a drama in a week or two, which means my obsession is short lived. There’s no summer hiatus, winter hiatus or waiting a week in between and wondering what’s going to happen. It’s instant gratification, which is really nice, but which is why there’s not much of a fandom built on it.

Which I guess is a good and bad thing.

  113. just popped a bunch of popcorn..

langdon unni.. ockoala.. you ladies want some??

imma sit back and enjoy the fight over TOP between lovenyc52 and b020. i’m not really rooting for either one, but lovenyc52, you better make me proud to be your twin. that’s all i’m sayin’.

before it all begins, can you tell me what TOP means/stands for?

  114. @ mishane

thanks for the info! but now i dont know how to go and edit the post. maybe javabeans will? gah, srry for messing this up!

  115. I am LOVING You’re Beautiful – it’s well set to be added to my list of all-time favorite dramas. It’s just so fantastic to finally see Jang Geun Seuk in a role that actually suits him and which he’s putting his heart in, and everyone else is so well-cast and there’s such a scrumptious blend of angst and comedy and the writing is so delightfully consistent. I fall in love with it more with every episode <3 Sadly(or not so sadly) I'm not interested in Iris – it's just not my thing at all, and while it seems like an excellent effort in its genre, I seem to get less and less interested in it the more hype that arises.

also, does anyone know anything about Tajomaru, Oguri Shun's new movie? any chance of getting it English subbed soon?

  116. yay! finally on DB, have finished work, am on my half way to xmas week-long break, haven’t cleaned my house in preparation for my holiday yet BUT am really enjoying the open thread so much so that i’m munching on sweets instead of cooking a proper dinner (baaad….)

    ok so…

@ buffy/spike/angel people: i actually thought the angel/buffy thing was slightly too contrived and it only got really interesting when he turned all evil (possibly season 3? i forget) anyhoos though, the spike and buffy thing was weird at first but totally real in terms of what it ment to both of them at first and what it turned into at the end. i like that angel actually falls for cordy by the near end bits of angel (i think the connor storyline was totally pants though) and it just goes to show that maybe redemption can only truly be found in cheerleaders :)

@ black and white people: OMG why oh WHY wasn’t there serious romance between like, ANYONE interesting at the end? like not even a hug or anything from zaizai and whatshername chen ling (is it?!) sadness. two hot men and lame LAME romance. great copper storyline though.

i was actually hoping to catch up on lots of kdrama watching this hols but alas, the powers that be have other things in store for me so things i’m looking forward to are:

    - smile
    - you’re beautiful

not sure about iris….hum…is it really worth it d’you reckon??

  117. sweet nice cat. The Cat we adopted not to long ago was pregnant when we adopted her, and she just had the Kittens

    video of the kittens feeding
    http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/y222/gaming_bum/?action=view&current=mommakittens.flv

  118. @ 117 Nazreal

maybe redemption can only truly be found in cheerleaders

lol, nice! Very true though. Cheerleaders usually get a very bad rap in media. I don’t know what happened to Cordelia in Angel (never got into Angel for some reason) but I did love what Joss did with Cordelia’s character in BtVS. She went from shallow bitchy cheerleader to shallow bitchy cheerleader with a heart. All that drama between Cordelia/Xander/Willow was great. Well not great, but it gave Cordelia character.

  119. And I remember reading essays on BtVS. I really wanted to go to that college that taught BtVS classes. It had such an impact on cult and pop culture. People would go on and on and on about it and I stayed surprisingly interested.

I still think Buffy is one of the more complex woman characters in television. I loved that the writers made her unlikeable. She wasn’t perfect at all. Which is why I loved her.

  120. Heh, Maeby the Princess is currently wearing me out demanding attention! I thought she’d be pretty mellow since she’s a 3-year-old, but the tiny little thing is pretty frisky. When she’s not snoozing, of course.

Moderation usually happens when posts have multiple links, although sometimes other posts slip in there too. And lately my spam filter has been pretty strict too, but I’ll go in and unspam real comments so if you posted and it didn’t appear, it’ll probably get posted soon.

I LOVED Veronica Mars S1, but season 2 sorta felt like a betrayal — like, I gave you my diehard loyalty and you gave me this swill?

I ran out of time to get to IRIS, but I’ve got the next few episodes downloaded and awaiting viewing… So now I have to hope it continues to be good. I’m really relieved to have a bunch of guest bloggers stepping up to take over recaps for other dramas, because I always want to take on more than I can handle alone, but ambitiously wish I could to cover everything. So thanks, you guys!

  121. I’m in heaven because there is so much to watch every week online, but I’m still waiting to get my hands on a copy of the City Hall DVD. I don’t know why it’s taking so long.

Anyways, I was so desperate that I picked up a copy of Hur Joon instead. That should keep me going until either City Hall comes out or the current kdramas are out. Life is good.

  122. Do cats have cat years like dogs and dog years?

    i.e., is a 3-year old cat = kitten? or more like a reckless, pimply-faced voice-changing, always-at-the-mall kind of cat?

(ooh, i figured out how to make me lower case even if I am logged into wordpress)

  123. (sneaking a quick peek from boss’s laptop)

    @ Samsooki
Aigoo…it’s clear that the Mrs. now has two baby Samsooki’s to take care of (and only one uses KMS hairplay) :P

How long are you gonna hold out on the OT?

Imagine if this had been you?
    http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20091023/od_afp/malaysiaairasiaairlineoffbeat

  124. @hjkomo,

    I’ll stop holding out if:

    1. You cede me all rights on KJH, at least for the duration of 2009.
    2. You take chae-gim (책임 for the k-readers, or 責任, for the chinese readers) for misleading me on Ep 24 of Hong Gil Dong. Wouldn’t an unsuspecting reader think that “a beautiful” ending is a “happy ending”??

    :)

  125. AHHHH I love this name and this show so much~ so perfect! I would like to be friends with it. :)

  126. Happy Friday, yay for the awesomeness that is Your’re Beautiful, it is sooo much fun.

Aside from my happiness of not having a cold anymore I am currently obsessed with Tokio Hotel’s music. I have had my Snow Patrol’s Set The Fire To The Third Bar on repeat ever since the Dear John trailer….such a good song.

I keep getting to open thread so late these days,so many comments already. Have an awesome weekend everyone!!

    JB your cat is adorable:)

  127. @ lovenyc52 & Top fans: http://www.youtube.com/user/xfl0at#p/c/38CD6DA3A3CCFC49/62/rYFnD_N9tdg

last episode, part 3/4, start at 5:38

  128. @103 OK, now I have to go & tell my friends I can’t go out because I have to go home to watch ‘Smashed’!!!!

  129. I LOVE her name! How did you get her, since she’s already 3? all this cat talk makes me want to get my own (but I can’t yet). And nom_kitteh, I’d always thought you were partial to cats; i love your name.

    Happy Friday!

  130. @ JB re: VM Season 2

Yeah, I wouldn’t use as harsh of a term as “swill”, but VM S2 did in its essence betray all the finesse character and plot development in S1. For example: Meg wasn’t Meg anymore, Beaver wasn’t Beaver anymore, and WTF did you do to Wallace, Rob Thomas? So much of S1 was overturned in the name of creating the S2 mystery, that I felt deflated at the end of the season. The death of ______, and the rewriting of “A Trip to the Dentist”, kinda felt like I had been kicked in the gut.

Nonetheless…….for me, so much love and goodwill had been built up from VM S1, and the essence of Veronica/Logan was still present, and still sizzling, I can accept Season 2 and even Season 3. In the end of VM, my one takeaway was that Rob Thomas is not yet Joss Whedon – he has lots of potential. On the otherhand, Joss had plenty of misfires – Uhm, hello, Adam? – compared to Dark Willow? Yeah, Joss, I’ll give you a pass for misfires, because in the end you gave us Dark Willow, and how you dealt with the the death of Momma Summers and Tara.

BTW, all VMers, I do not know and have never acknowledged the presence of a so-called “Piz.” Never happened, la la la….

    @ b020

Well, you kinda just need to watch the last 10 minutes of Smashed….so you can still go out! But seriously, I would fast forward any scene with Dawn.

  131. JB…Maeby gets so much love from these uncles and aunts here…We once had 5 cats at a time and dog and birds….but now no more pet…only babysitting our granddogs(retirement… too much traveling).
IRIS is so awesome…my thirst of LBH is being satified, YRB is very cute and sweet…good cast. I am also watching Autumn Concerto and Easy Fortune Happy Life. I am leaving for VietNam the whole month of November…what will I do?I am sure I can watch Iris there…We will have 10 hours lay-over in Soeul on the way back…my daughter’s friend(teachs English in Soeul) will play host and give us a 6 hour tour of the city…can’t wait. Let see if we can use any of our Korean learning from watching all those Kdramas. City Hall DVD is avaible…I bought one already. Have a nice weekend everyone.

  132. @ 113 lb_tmi

Yup, thanks for sharing, I do want some virtual popcorn from you. Thanks, munch, munch.

I actually ate Pad Thai at my desk watching Something Blue from BtVS Season 4, so yummy and hilarious, esp when Buffy discusses what they should play as their first dance song…. Someone ate what would normally be my hidden stash of korean spicy noodles….. ;-)

    @ 131 sno

I think all4movies is talking about the official City Hall Director’s Cut DVD set soon to be released, not the bootleg stuff that has been available since July. Woo hoo, I can’t wait as well, I’m camping out (if possible) for that baby!

  133. @131 sno

oh! you’re going on a trip to Vietnam?? my aunt once told me that Vietnam was the place my uncle wanted to live the most.. where he loved the weather best.. and was the most beautiful place he had ever been. enjoy your trip!!! it sounds fantastic.

i wish my layover in Seoul would be that long so i could leave the airport and do a tiny bit of site-seeing.. but my layover is 3 hrs, not enough to even find my way around the airport. :(

    @ 132 ockoala

my hidden stash of korean ramen is still here.. no one’s been able to find it yet :D

  134. ockoala, I blame Buffy seasons 6 and 7 on Marti Noxious– er, I mean, Noxon. Yeah, Joss had a hand in that, of course, but Season 2 was all Rob Thomas’ hubris talking. And Teddy Dunn — nice guy in real life, I’m sure — is like the Veronica Mars world’s version of Ji-hoo. Great character, blank portrayal.

For me, VM ended with Season 1 when Lilly’s killer was revealed and Logan came to V’s door. I refuse to acknowledge the rest ever existed.

@gailT, I got her from the animal shelter. She’d been surrendered by her previous owners. :(

I’d say 3 is about twenties for cat years. They’re called adults after they turn 1.

  135. @ 130 ockoala

I hate a love/hate relationship with Evil!Willow. I kind of thought it was over the top and ridiculous but in a way, it brought a different and deeper aspect to the Scooby friendships. I appreciated that, but I thought it was still kind of crazy.

(I did like how Xander became useful and saved the world.)

Dawn was ridiculous. I really did not like her. Plus it just friggin confused me at first. Like, WHAT IS SHE?!?! That season did bring a lot of laughs and tears, especially the season finale. Buffy’s closing speech made me cry so many times (and I actually used it in a college paper! How lame.)

Buffy: Dawn, listen to me, listen. I love you. I will always love you. But this is the work that I have to do. Tell Giles… tell Giles I figured it out. And, and I’m okay. And give my love to my friends. You have to take care of them now. You have to take care of each other. Dawn, the hardest thing in this world… is to live in it. Be brave. Live… for me.

    *sniff*

  136. @ ockoala

Ah yes. Wind Beneath My Wings. Okay, when I go home I’m totally going to rewatch that episode. I love silly Buffy. Remember Beer Bad? I also loved The Freshman.

Did you guys know that Rob Thomas wrote Veronica Mars to be a boy? I’m so happy it was switched to a girl. It adds a whole different level to it.

I was the biggest Buffy geek in high school. I used to write quotes from the show in a notebook. I loved Buffy slang.

  137. THANKS A LOT OPEN THREAD!

I was re-watching Monk (another great TV show) but when I get home, my Buffy DVD’s are going in and I’m doing a re-watch. Hello my past, goodbye my weekend.

  138. Just finished watching IRIS Episode 4. May be Kim Jong II is also watching the meow…meow…meow…IRIS for a cat name is also not too bad!!

  139. Woah. I leave for three hours and there’s a million comments. I shouldn’t be surprised by this by now, but somehow I still am O.o

Just got back from the first (of probably many) interviews for an ESL position in Korea. I hadn’t been terribly excited about it before, but now it’s starting to look fantastic. I’d be grouped with some other people from Seattle, and I can say that I don’t want to be out in the boonies. The only big problem remaining is that I’m vegetarian. Arguh. I’ll be doing lots of cooking if I go.

My father continues to be enthralled with 1N2D. He REALLY wants it to be on every night, and even has favorites now (Mong, Ho Dong). I’ve been terribly impressed actually; he’s starting to pick up some Korean! There were all sorts of repeated phrases that he repeats back to me, and checks to see if he’s sure of what they mean. It’s cute. We tried watching MFL together but that just wasn’t his cup of tea, lol. Maybe we’ll try IRIS together when it hits America.

  140. Evil Willow was great, if the story was little strange. I sincerly love Season 6 finale, I know alot of people don’t but I really did. Dawn was annoying, and will forever be annoying.

  141. Happy Friday! I am on clouds nines today for many reasons but mostly because of YB.
    @badmarkz
So true, watching You’re Beautiful without JB’s recap is incomplete and may I add, in comprehensible.

    @Taohua
I hope the reporter doesn’t stop looking for the mystery girl. That might be the catalyst in stopping the whole charade between TK and HY.

    @ockoala
I’m probably too old for YB too but can’t help being obsessed with it and all the characters especially TK and MN. But seriously, I thought everyone was well cast.

JGS is one fine actor and can’t help swooning over him, eyeliner and all. Planning to watch all his dramas and movies – saw the clips from Itaewon Murder and think that’s quite a different role for him too. Has anyone claimed him? Can I have him please??

  142. I think Evil!Willow was hard to swallow because Willow used to be so. . . innocent. Sweet. Even when she was opening up in college, she still remained pretty innocent. So to go from that Willow to Evil!Willow was a big leap for me. It’s been years since I’ve watched so maybe there was more a subtle decline.

I liked that season but I thought the finale was more anti-climatic compared to the prior season finales. My favorite still has to be Becoming 2 (which was actually the first BtVS episode I watched). Seeing Buffy kiss Angel and then kill him? Heartbreaking. And then Sarah McLachlan (sp?) plays in the background and your heart just breaks.

  143. @ mishane

“I was the biggest Buffy geek in high school.”

was? was?? umm.. you still ARE. but i LOVE reading all the buffy stuff.. it’s just, why can’t i remember what happened in any episodes? i only remember characters.. but not events. weird.

  144. @ JB

Snerf, Teddy Dunn…..let’s see, yup, you described him perfectly. It was unfortunate, because as much as I heart LoVe, if Teddy Dunn had half the charisma of Jason Dohring (who started off such a douchebag and turned into a hottie – go figure?), then the Veronica-Logan-Duncan love triangle would have been beyond epic.

Let’s see – the guys are best friends, check; girl loved/in love with either or both at any given moment, check; false alarm of blood relations, check; one guy dated your best friend, the other is the brother of your best friend, check; one is your first love, the other is potentially your true love, check; both guys will probably move heaven and earth for you, check; both guys are rich as hell, check; one guy’s dad killed your best friend, the other guy’s dad was your mother’s first love, check; and I can go on and on…..

What RT made the mistake of doing was re-inserting the love triangle AFTER it was clear that Teddy Dunn just didn’t have the same chemistry with Kristen Bell, so it felt contrived, and the rest of Season 2 promptly fell down a cliff like that school bus.

But I still love VM in the end (call me sentimental – after Buffy, I was in a lonely lost wasteland of bad TV shows, just waiting patiently, and I had yet to discover the magic of k-drama, and then VM came along, and I was saved, hallelujah). And if the show had ended forever at the end of Season 1 and we DO get to see that it was Logan (who else could it have been RT, you don’t need to tease us) who came to V’s door, I would have died happy as well. A kiss between the battered Logan and Veronica and Lily’s killer apprehended, I would have been more than satisfied.

    @ mishane

Oh. My. God. You memorized THE speech. I am so touched just reading it. And let’s not forget what is on Buffy’s tombstone – She Saved the World. A Lot.

Yeah, Dark Willow was over the top, but Willow’s grief was killer, Alyson Hannigan nailed it. Dawn is and forever will be just a plot device, she never felt real to me.

And THE speech always make me remember what Buffy tells the Scoobies in “Once More, With Feeling” that she was in Heaven!!! and happy, and content, and at peace, and they brought her back to do what she told Dawn would be the hardest thing in the world, to live. So glorious, Joss, when you are firing on all cylinders, your work is magic.

“My favorite still has to be Becoming 2 (which was actually the first BtVS episode I watched). Seeing Buffy kiss Angel and then kill him? Heartbreaking. And then Sarah McLachlan (sp?) plays in the background and your heart just breaks.”

Yes, my favorite Season ender from ALL BtVS seasons as well. I have all of Sarah McLachlan’s CD’s because of that episode, when Buffy is walking away, the music kills.

Oh, and I heard Marti Noxon joined Dollhouse, urgh.

  145. @ 143 lb_tmi

You’re right. I still am. I own the DVD boxset and some of the Season 8 comics. (And when it comes out in Blu-Ray, I’ll buy it then also).

I haven’t seen an episode in years though, I think the last time I watched it was 3 years ago?

But I still remember everything. That’s how much of an impression it left on me.

    @ ockoala
LOL NO! I didn’t memorize the speech at all. I just googled Buffy quotes on wiki. Pssh, I’m not that much of a geek!!

And THE speech always make me remember what Buffy tells the Scoobies in “Once More, With Feeling” that she was in Heaven!!! and happy, and content, and at peace, and they brought her back to do what she told Dawn would be the hardest thing in the world, to live. So glorious, Joss, when you are firing on all cylinders, your work is magic,

OMG. Yes. That speech killed me. Killed me dead.

I never started watching Dollhouse. Eliza Dushku never impressed me much and her line delivery was kind of awkward. The concept sounded interesting though.

  146. I want my Friday back.

*looks at mountains of textbooks covering my study-table*

And I never ever ever want Saturday – the Systematic Anatomy Exam Which Will Eat You Alive and Throw You To the Evil Ogres to Suck Your (diencephalon, telencephaol, brainstem, midbrain, and cerebral-spinal fluid) Brains Out – which I will fail.

You’re Beautiful has even failed to cheer me up. That just *shows* how hopelessly miserable I am.

    *sniffles and scurries away*

  147. I love it when the OT thread is awesome all day long and on into the following week. This one has been fantastic. I don’t have much to contribute today other than “Damn, didn’t Shin-woo look FINE in those pants” but I’m enjoying every word.

Strangely enough, as much as I loved Buffy (and I did), I just can’t bring myself to go back there. I have all the DVD’s but couldn’t tell you the last time I watched them. I even bought the Angel boxed set when Amazon offered it at a ridiculous price a few months ago. I think it still has the wrapping on it.

Same thing with VM…the coulda woulda shouldas of that show just kill me dead.

I think I feel a drunken binge coming on. I am DUE, lemme tell ya.

  148. @ meh

    You have Saturday classes?!!

I did that one year. The Organic Chemistry lab I wanted to take only met up on Saturday mornings at 9:00. NEVER AGAIN. EVER. Every other week I’d walk into class hungover and this is not good when you’re dealing with combustible chemicals. Then after class I’d start the slow walk back to the dorms where my friends were still snug asleep in their beds. HATE. HATE. HATE.

Good luck on Anatomy! Hey, at least it’s not Physics!

    @ langdon

Yeah, a Buffy rewatch is a commitment. I did it once in college with my roommate but I think we only got to Season 5. There’s too many!

  149. Aigoo, Open Thread.

@ annieee: So according to Show, it’s not all cracky, there is sadness and crying and angst. I’ll choose to believe him, because he is Show Luo. And the BTS stuff looks hysterical – OH MY GOD at the inspiration for his name – Da Lang, Da Lang; is the Pink Panther like his equivalent of Kashaba Wangze? Also Rainie’s hair is awesome; her and Mike He will always have that, even if their sacred OTP status seems to have died: their hair will always, always, ALWAYS be commented on. Oh Lordy, here we go: YAB, possibly Iris, Shanghai Sweethearts, plus B&W wanting, S3 of VM wanting, bloody all of Buffy wanting. jghfhsjkalshjgdhkfhljkkghwf

  150. You cat is not that cute, i think you should get a dog. it will do more than just lay around like that cat.

  151. Cute cat! Just a random thought to share: Nov edition of Details has Adam Lambert on the cover, and his kohl plus hairstyle makes him a twin of Tae Kyung!

  152. ahh.. i’ve not any more popcorn and the fight over TOP has already ceased.. therefore, i must bring myself back to reality and actually accomplish some work.

have a great weekend! i’ll re-visit this thread on Monday, cuz OT is no longer just Friday.. but all week long.

    adieu.

  153. For mishane:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwfHyYvj2Q4

Epic. Spanning decades and continents, bloodshed, and tears. Love the song, the framing of the couple, the lighting, KB looks gorgeous, and JD is really killing it with his Logan-ness. Once again, “True Love Stories Never Have Endings.”

A gloriously well-done K-drama always remind me of the Epic.

  154. @mishane – that was the most awesome thing i have read all day. that speech.. *tear*. i believe that my senior quote in the yearbook came from buffy as well. I think i paraphrased the quote Whistler said in the beginning of Becoming Part 2. Something along the lines of “There are moments in our lives that make you. Even if you see them coming, you’re not ready for them. It’s what you do afterwards that counds. That’s when you find out who you are” Man. Buffy was such a great show. so many life lessons.

@b020 – i gots my boxing gloves on hehe! i’ll have to check out that clip when i get home.. no video access here at work :( unfortunate, but TOP must wait for me at home…

oook this morning was wholly unproductive. must make up for it now.

  155. @ 153 ockoala

Thank you! I’ll watch it when I get home. It’s 6 PM now, time to shut down the computer and make the long drive home. Where’ll I’ll probably catch up on IRIS and You’re Beautiful. And maybe a Buffy episode or two.

    See ya’ll on the flipside

. . .or in an hour or two.

  156. @ Evil/Willow interests: I LOVE HER! she’s so kickawesomely evil!

ok ok actually i think the reason why i do love her so is because by season evil willow (yeh i can’t remember the number!) GILES GETS TO KICK MAGIC ASS!! the penultimate eppy when giles walks through the door is amaaaaazing! go giles go giles go giles! *i love him!

(on a side note, if anyone gets to watch merlin on bbc one- giles plays uther pendragon- awesome bbc drama albeit with crabby CGI hehe)

but yes, i like the fact that magic is has this seductive and addictive quality to it and that willow ends up eating people- scary but it’s time willowy willow got some action time i reckon. the nerdy weevils were too poopy to really be bad guys so it’s a nice play on the end of season big bad :)

dang, i don’t actually OWN any buffy DVDs. must rectify that soon so they can sit alongside my angel ones :)

  157. I haven’t read all 154 comments so sorry if this is already out there. Is it me or is IRIS one awesome drama!! Finally something worth watching. I live the cinematography, soundtrack, storyline, casting, and even the acting. I don’t find LBH attractive but he us sure charismatic. KTH is ok. Better than before. Is TOP from the US? His English us not bad.

  158. So Friday finally came…

I was anticipating all week for this time so I can finally sit back and enjoy some good old dramas…and yet b/c of YB I already watched it all. Now I’m left with nothing to watch.

+_+” I was so stressed out about midterms this week (and next week’s midterms) that I forgot how relaxing it feels at the end of the week. At the same, it’s so vexing because I spent so much time studying for a stupid computer science quiz and stupid tiny little mistake practically failed me and ruined my mood right now….EPIC fail. This makes me remember that humble theory on Study = fail

    No Study = Fail
    Study = No Fail
No Study + Study = No Fail + Fail
    (Study)*(No + 1) = (Fail)*(No + 1)
    Study = Fail

+_+” On the good side, my tests are probably good. =D

Let’s pray for all the best… I still have another week of stress to go through. +_+”

  159. Congratulations on your beautiful cat, JB – she is adorable! The name reminded me of 2 fish I had years ago – one named Maybe, the other Luke (I was in a relationship with a guy called Luke at the time). First Maybe died, then Luke – needless to say, the relationship did not work out. :-)

You guys talking about VM made me really miss that show. I think I should re-watch Season 1 soon. I bought the DVDs when they came out and thought it was the greatest show ever. All the fanfics I read – that fandom totally took over my life for a year or so. LOL. Season 2 was such a disappointment though – too high expectations, just like BBF episodes 13-24. ^_^

Usually I am watching kdramas and jdramas after they have aired and are fully subtitled because I like marathons, but at the moment I am watching 2 Korean and 2 Japanese dramas as they air. You guys should check out JIN – it is great!

Have a wonderful weekend you guys!

  160. can we see what your dramabeanss look like?

  161. Late to post again! 159 went before me, maybe instead of trying to first I’ll aim for last!
Lovely cat (aren’t they all). If by chance she tires of the laser dot try a piece of brown paper sack tied on a piece of string and better yet the whole brown paper sack!
I’m officially banned from the pound by my family as I’ve reached my full quota of pets.
2 dogs and 2 cats. I think my family has visions of me becoming one of those old ladies you see on the news, overrun with cats!
This week I’ve not watched much in the way of dramas, got to episode 14 of Sons of Sol Pharmacy House and can’t find Ep 15 to watch! Oh well it’s god to have a dry spell every now and then. Vowed not to start IRIS until it’s finished airing!
    Have a good weekend!

  162. Samsooki 41 and 51:

Love the screenplay concept… and I’m a hardcore Kim Rae Won fan and very very partial to Gong Yoo, but please, please, could you recast the Kim Jae Won role? I just can’t stand that guy. Ever since Wonderful LIfe. I just can’t watch him. I gritted my teeth through My Love Patzzi, but I promised myself I’d never have to do that again. So pleeeease… no KJW.

I’m in Buffalo this weekend. This city has amazing architecture. But it is pouring with rain… the walking tour had to be abandoned. And I have a bad feeling about the all the walking planned for tomorrow, too.

  163. “Annyong” to Maeby-cat. Someone should name a cat Steve Holt.

True story, when I got my first ipod I thought about how men name their cars with female names. So I wanted something like that for it… and thus named my ipod Lucille III. But now I have my video ipod so it’s Lucille IV. (I like Arrested Development a lot)

You’re Beautiful: Is Shin-Woo at that boiling point yet? I’m waiting for him to kick a tree (Smile, You reference) or something because dude.. you got burned. Inferior to a guy who does drive-by shopping…maybe Mi Nams next gift will be a big mac.

Re-watching (slowly) Dal Jas Spring. Soon I will curling my hair and painting my nails black….

  164. @161 coco

You sound like me, I have two dogs and two cats too. Both of my dogs are getting old; I’m starting to worry about this a little bit. I have a 14-year old Maltese (Lucie), a 12-year old black Lab (Bailey), a 4-year old girl cat (Wootie) and a 1-year old boy cat (Oscar).

Lucie is the very spoiled Queen; her feet rarely ever hit the floor anymore as she’s arthritic and looks like a backwards letter “C” when she walks. :-(

Bailey doesn’t like to be spoken to directly by anyone, so we have to ask Lucie (or whoever else may be nearby) “Is Bailey ready to eat?” or “Does Bailey need to go outside?” before he’ll actually do anything. He also has a split personality disorder and has to be locked up if someone other than a resident of our house is around. He turns into Cujo.

Wootie is extremely anti-social and lives upstairs alone. Think feline Greta Garbo. But when everyone is asleep she sneaks into the bedroom and sleeps on my back.

Oscar is like living with a 2-year old. He likes blueberry muffins the best and his mortal enemy is The Shoestring. He likes to lure unsuspecting victims with his see-my-sexy-tummy pose…then moves in for the kill.

  165. @92 b020

I’m so glad someone brought up I Am Sam. I wanted to ask OTers their opinion, but I was too late for OT105.

Is that the general consensus: ‘painful’? It was my first drama after I discovered Haru Haru MV on youtube and fell love at first sight /sound (his VOICE!) for TOP. I really liked it….

I think its time to rewatch it.

  166. @b020 – ha, how is it TOP always looks good lol..and i love his speaking voice too. hot hot hot. thanks for sharing!

@doublethink101 – Haru Haru MV is what solidified my love for TOP… he’s so badass (but not BAD!) in it and his voice even more gravelly. i can’t even count the times i’ve watched that video in just the past few days lol.

  167. I forgot to mention the other morning I was at my usual Wawas getting my coffee and the song Wasted on the Way by Crosby, Stills & Nash started playing….I thought about Flowers for My Life and started to tear up, I looked like a hot mess. People must have thought I got dumped or something. Look what watching dramas has done to me!

  168. @janna

“Is Shin-Woo at that boiling point yet? I’m waiting for him to kick a tree (Smile, You reference) or something because dude.. you got burned. Inferior to a guy who does drive-by shopping…maybe Mi Nams next gift will be a big mac.”

Haha…that is so sad but true…I didn’t think about that until you mentioned it.

  169. @langdon813
    Here’s the breakdown of my household;
Big Mac- yellow lab aged 14 and very arthritic. At 100lb I’m afraid I can’t carry him anywhere! He is my favourite but don’t tell the others.
Coco (yes I use my pets names for my online ID)- Chocolate Lab age 7 but thinks she’s still a puppy. Has more energy than either of us know what to with. Way too smart for her own good. I found out too late why this one was in the pound!
Gracie- cat approx 11yrs old. Sweetheart! I found her abandoned in a cardboard pet carrier in a dumpster! (No, I wasn’t dumpster diving! I just heard her crying as I walk by.)
Little George- cat aged 5. He’s the reason I got Coco. Went to the pound to find a kitten to keep Gracie company as my old cat had passed away. While I was there I just had to look at the dogs and the rest is history! Any way George is my hunter and gift giver. Very much an outdoor lover but comes home to sleep usually occupying 95% of the bed. I have been known to wake up with my leg falling off the side.
    Love them all.
Sorry to use this space to talk about my pets but they are my drama watching companions!

  170. My animals are always with me when I watch my dramas too. They give me funny looks during my extremely loud fits of laughter, or do the pet equivalent of eye-rolling when I sob uncontrollably (which is a lot).

They have also been known to jump up and leave the room when I scream:

    HOLY – - – - !

Just as I did a moment ago at the end of Ep 4 of IRIS. Oh my God. This show is too intense, I’m a nervous wreck. I had already bitten my nails down to little nubs…I KNEW I should have started drinking earlier today. ;-)

  171. I still don’t get internet access at work (don’t have access to the new router yet), and missing all the fun discussions on OT Fridays has got me seriously thinking of upgrading to a smart phone. That would definitely bring this tech-challenged ajumma into the modern age (my first laptop was purchased only a year ago, and my current cell phone is a relic). Or better yet, I should just take Fridays off. Hey, if hubby can take the day off just to go up to Napa to get his Judgement of Paris (about the historic 1976 tasting where Chateau Montelena beat the French chardonnays in a blind tasting) book signed and shopping at the outlets (I swear, he shops more than I do)…then, why can’t I?

While I was internet-deprived, I couldn’t get OT off the brain…so I thought of some more names to add to JB’s menagerie, should she ever head down the road of the crazy lady with the 50 cats….or Maeby decides to watch Iris with JB and POOF! -> spontaneous, immaculate twin conception a la belleza
(That’s right – LBH’s superpowers extend to feline purrsuasion as well. :P )

글쎄 (GeulsseWell… / let me see…) and 설마 (SeolmaSurely not!)
Add Maeby and Surely, and that makes -> 4 down, and 46 to go! :P
    Yeah…it’s been one of those days… ;)

    @ Samsooki

    1) I will never cede all rights, even momentarily, to KJH to you. :-P
    2) I take full chae-gim (책임) in that I admit that I WARNED YOU TO GET YOUR TISSUES READY for Ep.24 of HGD.
    3) LALALALALALALALALALALALALA

Perhaps, you had a similar accident to KJH, earlier in your life, in which you swerved to avoid an adorable puppy (named Musa -> and if I ever get a Sapsaree, I’m naming him Musa)? …but this one caused permanent brain damage?! o_O
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SAbwIH_flA

    @ langdon813
“I don’t have much to contribute today other than “Damn, didn’t Shin-woo look FINE in those pants” but I’m enjoying every word.”

I’m enjoying You’re Beautiful immensely, but it still hasn’t reached The Crack proportions for me. I don’t know why. The Hong sisters are certainly delivering, JGS fits TK to a tee, PSH is great as the innocent and loveable GMN, and Jeremy is a hoot.
    But Shin Woo….oh, Shin Woo…

Even though I concur wholeheartedly with the TK/MN OTP, I’m still suffering from Second Lead Crush Syndrome. It’s not that I expect him to have any chance with MN (he’s missed the boat)…or find the actor more talented than JGS (he’s certainly not). Maybe, it’s my imbalanced membership in the Inappropriate Crushes on Much Younger Men Club? If I were to be stuck in an elevator with TK, the most inappropriate thing I would be compelled to do is pinch his adorable cheeks. But with SW, I wouldn’t be able to stop coming up with new and inventive inappropriate behaviors. Hehe…

And he certainly does have a scrumptious bottom – Enjoy!

  172. @164 langdon813

LOL, wow an animal lover, too. I enjoyed so much your description of your pet family.

  173. I am in a way new to Asian drama, even tough I have watch @ 20 dramas in their full run I am still consider myself new at this, having a Latino background I have watch an infinite amount of Novelas, But I must admit that so far Korea is producing the best Novelas @ the world right now. Let us hope that they can keep it up, I tip my hat to such a great contribution for us who have grown up with this genre of TV viewing Gracias………

  174. And here I thought that if you were to get a cat, it was going to be named Iljimae….
    ^______^

  175. @171, hjkomo

I do so love it when you come bearing gifts. :-D

And I’ll be very glad when you either get access to the new router or a smart phone…preferably both! My favorite phone EVER (Samsung Epix, yeah baby) died recently. Through no fault of its own though; it was an example of Korean technology at its finest.

It was the victim of an unfortunate coffee incident. :-(

  176. @hjkomo

    3) LALALALALALALALALALALALALA

    hehe.

    @reluctantbutaddicted

Really? I was thinking that Kim Jae Won would be a good addition.

Okay, here’s the thing. I don’t really like Kim Jae Won that much from a personal standpoint (he was a bit… not really someone I could be friends with in My Love Patzzi). BUT, I think he is a talented actor – on the basis of that, and the fact that a lot of folks seem to like him, that I put him in that role.

I guess I could substitute Ji Sung, since he’s already played a doctor before (New Heart), or my KJH, who played a bit role as a doctor (Save The Last Dance For Me)…

  177. @ langdon813
I’ve been meaning to get a new phone for years. My black & white, camera-free, pre-internet days Motorola has served me well…no frills, simple to use…but brings me comments like, “Your phone’s really, really old” and “You don’t know how to text?!” from my 12 year-old nephew. ha.

Another observation on the JGS/JYH comparison in the ICOMYM Club:
JGS really does make a cute girl (SNSD parody). If I were a lesbian, I’d be in Inappropriate Crush heaven. ;)
On the other hand, JYH pulls off SMEXY (rather than greasy fairy) in guyliner. ‘Nuff said.

    Oh….to be THE pink plastic spoon… :D

  178. @langdon813 … I literally pulled up open thread hoping someone also saw IRIS episode 4 and OHMANNNN what in the world??? I keep having to pause the episodes when the suspense is building in order to get my heart rate back to normal! But then the surprises still keep coming out of nowhere! This could be hazardous to my health!!

  179. @178, soyjoy

It can sometimes take me HOURS to watch a single episode if I either really like a drama or if it gets too intense. I think Ep 4 of IRIS took me about 3.5 hours total. No lie.

Guys, IRIS is going to be one huge spoiler trap from here on out. I won’t ever say anything specific because I know lot of our OT family is waiting until it’s over to start watching. Just saying…y’all might want to rethink this and start watching now, because the OMGWTH moments are gonna be fast and furious from this point on.

    @177, hjkomo

I am The Lollipop, you are The Pink Plastic Spoon. It was just meant to be.

I think there’s a Beatles song in there somewhere.

  180. I don’t know how you guys manage to watch so many k-dramas and post on this thread. I had to get sick with the flu to watch one kdrama. Being sick is the perfect excuse to ignore work, family and even basic necessities like showering and eating so you can watch some kdrama.

I chose to watch Your Beautiful this week since I thought IRIS might be too intense for my flu fried brain. Your Beautiful looked good for some mindless fun and the Hong sister’s never disappoint for laughs. I’m glad to say that despite the story subject matter which I had no interest in, I am enjoying it immensely for the writing, story pace and unpredictable plot devices but more importantly surprised by some of the great acting. Jang Geun Seuk in particular really owns his character. In the first 3 episodes he pretty much plays a male bitch. I just love how JGS added little nuances to his character. The scene where he dismisses the Fake Fairy from his van with his hand wave has to be one of the most hysterical scenes I’ve seen this year. Also totally loving JB’s recaps since I’ve already watched up to episode 6. Crap this is why I usually wait until the show is near its end so I can marathon through.

Buffy and Veronica discussions. Brings back some great memories. When Buffy was on TV, my 4-5 buffy watching friends would call each other after each episode to discuss and break the relationships down. What geekdom. How I miss those days.

  181. 171 hjkomo – Oct 23, 2009 at 7:57 pm

“Hey, if hubby can take the day off just to go up to Napa to get his Judgement of Paris (about the historic 1976 tasting where Chateau Montelena beat the French chardonnays in a blind tasting) book signed…”

Hysterical you should bring this up. I remember being in Chateau Montelena for a picnic lunch on a particularly deserted day and someone who worked there was talking to us about places to eat and vineyards to try etc and he told us the same bit of information. Though it was years ago I can’t seem to expunge that info from my brain though I’ve forgotten my 4th grade best friend’s name. Anyway my bf and I must have bought a case of their chardonnay and I don’t even really like chardonnays. Its a great marketing tool.

  182. Hi there!

I have 2cats too. feeling troubled lately as they are sick — down with flu…

    :(

  183. Happy OT everyone:
I’m sooo glad it’s friday. Had one of the worst day @ work, actually more emotional toll from ALL of the patients. They either told me they just lost their house or jobs or BOTH, someone in their family has cancer, and they no longer have insurance, and the worst one was the one that woke up with her hubby passed on during the nite(he had a heart attack). They were 1 week shy of their 20th anniversary…I felt so helpless. All I could do was gave them some kind words and a warm squeeze in their hands( didn’t want to have”inappropriate” body contact-we are in litious California), and a big hug to one of them since I knew them for years.***sigh

    @JB
I just wanted to say that your cat is very cute. Unfortunately, I’m one those who cannot even be in the same room with a cat. I’m the asian “Mrs Monk”. The last time I sat next to one(actually, I didn’t know he was there), my eyes swelled up to a slit. For my work, it’s not good, and my staff would never let me be(cracking up, probably) if my eyes look like that ><

    @langdon813 and other LBH lovers
I saw this @work's MBC digital/ Arirang- The report about the Original F4
    LBH
    Jang Dong Gun
    Jung Woo Sung and
Bae Yong Joon….it seems like LBH is still the fan's fav

    @Samsooki
I always know I like you for a reason- you LOVE Gong Yoo as much as I do. FYI his discharge date for his MS is 12/08/09…and if I didn't have Mr.Cingdoc, and the 2 lil Cingdoc, I would have jump on a plane and welcome my Yoo home =)

  184. I just typed a long post and it disappeard…oh well…maybe I ranted too much :( and kdramaland fairies took my post down.

  185. This is the gist of what I typed earlier:

Happy OT everyone…missed you all, my fellow kdrama lovers
Had a bad day at work, but it’s ok because I’m now with you guys, I feel “hugged” whenever I’m in OT.

    @JB
Your cat is very cute. I wish I can enjoy the company of pet, but I’m highly allergic.
One time, my eyes swelled up like this ><, just because I sat unknowly next to one.

    @langdon813
I saw it in Arirang: The Original F4
    LBH
    Jang Dong Gun
Jung Woo Sung and Bae Yong Joon ( with LBH being fan's fav)

    @Samsooki
I know I like you for a reason…You LOVE Gong Yoo as much as I do. FYI Gong Yoo's release date of his MS is 12/08/09. You think hubby and the lil cingdoc would notice if I've gone to Korea to welcome MY Yoo home??

Hope this post goes through…too tired to retype another post.

  186. @180, nycgrl

Oh, it’s easy. Just forgo sleep, food, work, family, friends, you know. Stuff like that.

Just kidding. Here’s what it’s really like (for me), if anyone wonders why it seems like I never leave this site. The truth is I don’t sleep much, I never have. I usually go to bed at 2 or 2:30 and get up at 8. I work at home, so my commute is like 5 feet from my bed to my office. I basically only have about 4 or 5 tasks I have to complete each week, and other than that I just wait for the phone to ring. I am VERY lucky…I have a really easy job but it requires me to sit at my desk all day whether I’m busy or not. This gives me a lot of time to watch dramas and hang out at here at DB.

I also don’t watch regular TV anymore. Ever. Not anything. I will when Lost and Friday Night Lights come back on in January, but right now? Nothing. I am recording Mad Men every week but so far I haven’t watched a single episode of the new season.

I fear K-dramas have ruined me for anything else. And that doesn’t bother me one little bit.

    @184, cingdoc

Oh noes! What were you you ranting about? OOPS, never mind, your post just showed up! Sorry about your bad day, my friend! Hope you have a great weekend to make up for it.

  187. @ nycgrl

Yeah, that tasting is [in]famous. There’s also a movie, Bottle Shock, that was made last year with Alan Rickman (love him!). It was interesting to watch what was based on the true story and what was Hollywood embellishment.

Chateau Montelena’s chardonnay is okay (I still prefer white Burgundy), but their Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is consistently good (and half the price when bought on futures).

  188. Just finished Dal Ja’s Spring…wow, what an ending. That was a really smart way to end it. Brilliant, and consistent with the theme of the show.

    ***SPOILERS AHEAD***

    Things I loved about DJS:

    1) I loved the character developments in the main leads – DJ, TB, SJ and SD. We see how they negotiated their emotional and professional hurdles, and learnt from each setback and question mark. We see a very clear cause and effect of each decision they make and how it leads to progression in their relationships and professional careers.

    2) I really loved SJ’s character and her relationship with SD. They showed the give and take in relationships (for example, he wanted to get married, she didn’t but gave in eventually).

    3) I loved that TB was a straight forward dude who never hid his feelings, and always spoke his mind and was honest to a fault with everyone. Yes, not everyone needs to be the “I love you but for your sake I won’t tell you how I feel”. He is the real modern man here. (so is SD!!! Wait, so is DJ! and SJ!)

    4) I loved the scene in the last ep when she was in the restaurant and got the card from him that simply read “if it’s fate….maybe?”. The next minute was difficult to swallow as I really thought he was going to show up and he doesn’t…which really added to the sentiment of the scene. That has got to be the most meaningful scene in the entire show for me.

    5) Although that is rivaled by SJ proposing to SD. I almost cried.

There are so many more but I don’t want my post too long (darn, too late already and I haven’t even started on the dislikes yet!)

Things I didn’t like about DJS:

    1) This is superficial but….I couldn’t help but get really distracted by Lee Min-Ki’s bloodshot eyes though he recovered a lot in the later episodes. Was he just seriously sleep deprived or did he have some sort of eye trouble? It bothered me and really distracted from a lot of scenes.

    2) With all the realistic and mature situations that happened in the show, I can’t help but wonder about the evil ex-wife’s antics. I felt that was over-the-top roll-my-eyes crazy and didn’t really fit in with the tone of the show.

    3) The 2 sets of parents (and grandparent). Are there any kdramas out there that doesn’t have the Parental Interference Plot? I don’t mean to offend anyone but is that truly the state of things in today’s korean society? Could someone please enlighten me please! Is that a common occurrence? Or is it seem more amplified as a kdrama plot device?

All in all this was a great show. The writing is top notch. Kudos to the writers for being able to so naturally and effortlessly bring to life the many different aspects to relationships not found in many dramas. It was at turns thought provoking, heartwarming, heart wrenching, sweet, hopeful. The ending was perfect because you really get the sense that the 2 really know what they want in life now, and what they want is each other. You get the sense that they are now both willing and ready to settle down, and what happens next, whatever it is, they will deal with it together. Thank you, Dal Ja’s Spring!

  189. Happy OT everybody!

O get well soon nycgrl. At least u can catch up on dramas! tc

awwww JB, Maeby is adorable (btw that AD ‘analrapist’ is still my hubby’s all time fav EVER, I told him about Maeby, and he started cracking up and redoing that line for the last hour). She has a thinking cat vibe to her. Too bad I’ve developed a severe cat allergy last couple years…. I offered to cat sit my friend’s 2 cats, but a min into his place cost me an ER visit. eyes swollen shut, diff breathing didnt even have time to replenish the food and water. In college though, my neighbor’s cat will consistently sneak into our house whenever he got the chance. I dunno what’s wrong with him, he puked a lot (on clean laundry) in his real home, but he’s a dearie at our place (he’ll head home to use the litter box..and come back). He loved to give us back massages whenever we’re lying back up on the couch and he would ‘purrrrrr’ all the while….and he liked to sleep on our carpet belly up with his legs all stretched out and we’ll give him belly rubs…and the big grin on his face…awwwwwwww I miss him.

Yeah, how do we watch sooo many dramas?! it’ll be interesting if we all delve up. ;)

have to admit I’m a very casual drama watcher, it all started when I was in a long distance relation, we were on msn all nite, and so I kept the dramas playing as backgd noise. Now it’s become a habit… whenever my laptop is on, some drama is playing (not that I’m always paying attention ;) )

O for all those interested in Black and White in SF bay area, it’s on KTSF 8pm, my mom told me it’s just aired first ep tonite, hubby checked out the actresses and he likes Janine Chang. I rem her fr Kenting ( liked that drama). Perfect timing for us to catch up.

And it’s Pumpkin day coming up! I rem my first horror flick was those segments (not unlike Hometown legend) on the VERY old EYT segments (that TVB nightly variety show) I was 6?, really dunno y my parents let me and my younger bro watched that, but we’re branded for life. I STILL rem one vividly ,. the one on majong (where it’s bad luck for all 4 players to throw out the ‘west’ tile in the same round….coz it rhymes with ‘all 4 going to the west (ie the other world/die…)) eekkkk

  190. i hate downtown LA when they’re filming a movie or tv show. as if traffic weren’t bad enough, roads were closed off, lanes had to be merged, and there was practically ZERO street parking, which, on a friday night, SUCKS. ended up paying freakin $28 to park in a structure for a lil over 3 hours. LA peeps, don’t park at the stupid macy’s parking structure on flower. they’ll jack you. actually y’all probably already knew that huh. little did i know there was a parking structure CLOSER to the restaurant i was going to…for $5 flat rate. sighs.

i’m gonna go watch some big bang videos to cheer me up.. TOP will soothe me haha.

  191. maeby and surely NICE. :D

  192. ring ding dong!! ahh!! <3 all of shinee's songs on their new album is stuck in my head… especially jojo ^^
im so glad its the weekend….. there were too many tests this week……. but now i get to relax~~~ and watch inkigayo… haha :]

    i hope everyone has a good weekend too… <3

  193. Just found this Nonstop clip with Jang Geon Suk and Jang Nara. Adorable!!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0t1QcJlmLo

  194. I just spent 2 nights in a city with wonderful seafood restaurants, too sick to eat anything at all. But that gave me a chance to finish Triple and now I really want to read the JavaBeans recap, because …….what happened there??? Were the last 3 or 4 minutes supposed to be reality? or was it just a skating representation of Haru’s life at that point? I watched it twice, and am still confused.

“Oh, it’s easy. Just forgo sleep, food, work, family, friends, you know. Stuff like that.”

Ok that explains it and oh how I envy you. I actually work mostly from home as well but I need to also go into the “office” a few times a week and even at home I often work 10-12 hr a day but I’m still not sure how everyone else does it.

    hjkomo
I’m gonna check out the movie since I also love Alan Rickman, Alan Rickman used to have this show with Nina Griscom when FoodTV was actually watchable and I just loved him. I have a friend who is a master sommolier and he hates californian type of wines because they are too fruit forward but I like them. If you are a wine geek Behrens and Hitchcock is fantastic for reds. I try to buy as much as possible when I can get my hands on it since they are not a big producer.

    mookie
Thanks so much mookie and I have to say I might have passed on Your Beautiful if I wasn’t sick which would have been a shame since I only watch 4-5 kdramas a year. Anymore and my work and life starts going to the tubes.

    lovenyc52
I can totally sympathize I live in an area of NYC that does tons of filming and it gets quite annoying after a while with the blocked streets, no parking etc. I do get to see a lot of stars filming but it gets so old I just walk by. I also did see when they filmed lobbyist here but I had no idea what show it was except I knew the crew was korean.

  196. @192 belleza

See, that’s what I love about Jang Nara.

    JNR: Ya!

(beckons JGS over with a pretty smile and a cute wave)

JNR: Ya! You’re a first-year, right? I’m your third-year noona okay? So get over here and give up your back. Quickly!

    ***

I have a feeling that that’s pretty much JNR’s real-life personality anyway, and how cute is that? Who wouldn’t agree to be a stepping stool for tardy Jang Nara? Mischievious, a bit lazy, yet creative and extroverted, bold and friendly… if I had a noona like that, how cool would my life have been back then? Reminds me of a less tortured, less angsty version of the OG of sassy girls, Jeon Ji Hyun.

  197. Hello from London!

I’m at Apple store charging my iphone and have thought of watching the rest of Iris ep4… Then, figured I must be nuts to even come with such an idea, having come all the way out here to London from So. Cal… So, I’m going to check Timeout London for a play or something…

JB, Your cat is soooo cute and cuddly. My son and I both have cat allergy and that’s too bad. He even had a cat while living in Bay area disregarding his allergy battling teary eyes and everything else. He’s a cat sort of guy, I’d say…

Anyway, I’m so enjoying reading all the comments here. Trust everybody is having happy weekends

  198. @belleza

thanks for that JSG and JN clip… lol! she’s so cute!

  199. My last OT before my vaca to LA (yes!). I just hope my girlfriends and I don’t spend too much time lingering in Ktown and forget to sight-see LA. So, I’m going rant since I won’t be able to do so for 2 weeks – bear with me folks.

B&W: I won’t say this is my #1 drama of 2009 since I’ve yet to start IRIS, but it is my #1 TW drama for 2009 (Momo Love and SS is unlikely to surpass B&W). Whoever has not joined the bandwagon, should at least check out the 1st ep of this drama. The only caveat is: If this is your 1st TW drama, it’s going to spoil you for other TW dramas.

As for the lack of story on romance: I love it. Too many Tdramas solely focus on lovelines that it’s become unoriginal. The fact that B&W focuses so much on bromance is wonderful – Mark & Vic seem to carry that offscreen too. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mark loves Vic the most in the end. LOLs.

MoMo Love: Biggest draw = Director Tsai – who jammed out some of my favorite Tdramas of all time, The Rose, It Started With A Kiss 1 & 2, etc. Biggest sore point = Cyndi Wang. I have absolutely nothing against the actress/singer, but after watching repeated “cutesy” roles, I’ve grown tired of the lack of diversity, and other than her early, guest-star stint as an innocent “seductress,” she’s never wow-ed me with her acting.

Hi, My Sweetheart: It took me about 4 years to become a Rainie fan, though I did follow her after her MG’s Yuuki role. And it wasn’t her acting/singing that cinched the deal, it was her off-screen personality. So I’ll be staying tuned to this drama. Plus, it’ll be interesting to see Show and Rainie’s chemistry onscreen….and Alien’s responses to their “intimacy” – LOLS.

You’re Beautiful: I don’t know abt everyone else, but the BTS scene of JGS/PSH filming the 2 black and white seduction scenes has won me over. Like someone commented, they were SO FLIRTING with each other, and has made the drama context more interesting. Figures it takes their off-screen interactions to get my complete devotion. Officially boarded the TK-MN ship.

Smile, You: *sigh* There are so many things wrong with this drama, but I’m completely hooked with LMJ & JKH. Blame it on their amazing chemistry, or their interesting exchanges, but Soo-In is my current fav couple (TK-MN is catching up as a very dangerous 2nd). I wish I didn’t have to skip so much of the drama just to see pertinent info on this couple, but alas what can I do when I’m simultaneous whoring myself to other dramas out there.

QSD: Alright, who here has renewed fervor in this drama now that Mishil is back? Should’ve waited until it ended before picking it up again. Oh, I have no restraint whatsoever.

  200. Reading all the comments of Black and Wite got me excited again over it. Do I miss that drama!!! Saw it at viikii but the video quality is not good. I usually see a few Taiwanese dramas during the year, but so far this is the only one I’ve seen.

I’ve been spending more time watching SS501 videos on youtube (they been in so many reality and variety shows that that will keep me busy for weeks) so I have been lagging on my drama watching.

I am waiting for YB and Iris to be over so that I can run watching marathons. It kills me to have to wait for a whole week to see new episodes of a drama. I have a shelf full of unopened boxsets from YA that I haven’t fun the time to watch.

I’ve never been a cat person (I suffer from allergies) but my son rescued a couple of abandoned kittens (male and female) whom he nursed back to health. The family has now grown to four beautiful all white, short haired cats and I love them all.

HAve a wonderful week and weekend everyone!!!!

  201. So, one of my chingus sent me this YT vid, and I cracked up! The guys are cute, esp. with the eye-liner look being so “in” now. It’s been awhile since I’ve really paid attention to Kpop, but the fans never cease to amaze me. Just wow. lols.

  202. samsooki,

jang nara had a song called ‘open your mind’ that was played at the end of each episode of new nonstop. it was a teeny-bopperish song that i loved, and the tone of the song fit in well with the character she played in the sitcom.

when her first cd came out, i was expecting sort of the same teeny-bopperish theme she usually portrayed on tv and on ‘open your mind.’ after listening to the cd for the first time, i was a little taken aback by the maturity of the sound. ‘this isn’t the jang nara that i know,’ i thought.

makes me wonder sometimes if she is really like the character she portrays on a lot of her dramas, or if she is serious like some of her music. probably somewhere in the middle.

to have someone like jang nara as portrayed in ‘nonstop’ as a noona? a boy can only dream. i bet there’d be a lot of hazing going on, and i’d accept it outwardly with a huge groan but inwardly with an even bigger smile.

  203. @gallivanter,

“Just got back from the first (of probably many) interviews for an ESL position in Korea.”

coool! good luck to you ~~

  204. @kgrl,

“QSD: Alright, who here has renewed fervor in this drama now that Mishil is back? Should’ve waited until it ended before picking it up again. Oh, I have no restraint whatsoever.”

This Belleza has a really soft spot for This Mishil. When This Mishil talks about representing an era, that really moved me. Who knows the greatness she could have achieved, had she had Deokman’s royal blood, or if she had been born a royal male heir? In the end, she ends up taking the direct route. Bring her boys to take the throne herself. She may be defeated; she may be killed; but at least she laid down all her cards and gave it the college try.

Many of my favorite scenes in the show are between my two favorite characters in the show Mishil and Bidam too. First, you don’t really know what will be said or is going to happen. Second, their uniqueness instantly makes me feel their bond, that even if they weren’t mother and son, they are the only two people in the world who are of their kind.

The show probably isn’t going to end with Mishil. It’ll probably end with the Bidam Rebellion. That’s going to break my heart. :(

Ratings have dropped for the show, but I liked the arcs about the tax reform and Chun Chu-gate.

  205. Can someone give me the links to the You’re Beautiful NG videos, the one where the leads are apparently filming the bed scene and flirting? Thanks in advance.

  206. Happy OT to everyone! Its a little late but who knows…OT might last all week!
Don’t have much to say but I do have a questions: Has anyone seen Style?
I’m still watching but I was struck by something throughout the show… When has a relationship begun and when is it really over in k-dramaland?

  207. @kb,

    yeap.

Having jang nara for a noona… well, there can’t be much more to life than that. then again, having jang nara call you ‘oppa’ all the time also sounds like a pretty nice life too. hmm. I guess the moral of the story is to have jang nara in your life. hehe.

    @nea,

i watched style on and off, mostly in subbing mode. i can’t say it’s the best drama ever, but something about lee jia was emotively…. inclusive? enough that I cared about the drama.

the other characters, including the ambiguously gay guy, weren’t so memorable to me.

  208. @belleza: Oh, you’re so funny! I love your “This Belleza” bit – and yes, I also have a bias toward “This Mishil.” She was the hook for me when I first started watching QSD, and the adorable child actors, of course. I did expect a lot from this drama, and have been somewhat disappointed, but there are many redeeming qualities such as Mishil, Bidam, and CC. They continue to be the biggest draw for me. If it weren’t for them, I would have dropped this drama like a hot plate.

As for Bidam…the poor thing needs some loving. A tender hand to hold is all he wants, really, can’t the script writers give him a little sympathy? Since I’m biased toward Bidam, I’ll probably want to and will understand his rebellion, even his malicious acts later on.

@Jingu: Here’s the BTS of JGS/PSH’s “seduction” scenes – I swear they were trying to seduce each other for real. lols.

  209. I finally watched IRIS ep.2 with sub ( thanks to WithS2 ). I was watching while eating – then I forgot that I was eating. :D
I completely hate Kim Tae Hee now – she’s one lucky b*tch – having two my ideal men by her side! And TOP’s preview………..awwww……I’m contemplating to watch ep 3-4 without sub!

I was watching You’re Beautiful during lunch hour at the office, without sub, and my friend called me crazy. I’ve been known as Kdrama maniac there, but then now I have two other colleagues who successfully converted as Kdrama maniacs too :D

I saw Jang Nara’s episode of Happy Together – she’s actually quiet and a bit shy, but when she starts to talk, I think she reminds me as female version of Kim Hyun Joong, having 4D personality. She’s cute – I used to like her very much in Bright Girl’s Story ( what’s exactly the official title of that drama? ).
And I can’t believe she’s around my age………….she must be using that famous Korean facial pack. :(

Did someone here watch “Strong Heart” with 2NE1 ? When Kang Ho Dong mentioned that Dara and Park Bom are 26 ( Korean age ) and then Solbi said “WHAT? They have same age with me?” I laughed so hard. Solbi…I guess she should stop ‘working on her face’. She was beautiful, and now…her face is, a bit weird.

I wish someone will sub Strong Heart episodes…

  210. @Kgrl – thanks for the BTS of YB clip!!! it is so cute :) they look adorable together and look like they’re having so much fun filming this. if only they really were together.. man JGS is a pretty guy…

  211. @188 kdxmel

DJS is one of the first of the many k-dramas I watched, together with MNIKSS & CoffeePrince. And I’d have to say it remains in my top 5 favourites.

I love that there are realy no villains, even the crazy wife of the marketing executive ended up being friends with DJ. And the 2nd lead characters, who appeared to be villains at the start became very good friends of DJ. And that’s how life is. Most of our struggles are really with ourselves, with the norms we are brought up in, with society.

    @samsooki

on your dream drama with two of my fav korean actors, gong yoo & kim rae woon (altho i also liked the 3rd one). can we just swap him with binnie?

i am so looking forward to gong yoo’s return to civilian life and hopefully soon into the k-drama world. missing him a lot; i even visit a fan website – gongyoo.exteen.com to fill in the gap and re-watching CP and Biscuit Teacher & Cotton Candy. I hope he gets a good comeback show.

  212. @djes
yes, i wish someone would sub Strong Heart too.

    @lovenyc52
JGS is a pretty guy. Did you watch his Toucholic CF? His smile will melt your heart.

  213. Just got back from seeing Echo and the Bunnymen at the Nokia Theater. Their performance was split into essentially two Acts. Act 2 was more of a standard gig. Act 1 was why I waited 3 months for this concert — they were going to perform their album Ocean Rain in sequence, backed by a 16-piece orchestra.

And it wasn’t just the orchestra during Act 1. They had two visual displays (only active during Act 1) that showed black and white pictures of them through their hungry and peak years, from 80-86, when they were the young turks with mad beautiful dreams.

Nokia Theater has good acoustics, and so I was expecting the orchestra to make their already rich sound fuller, to make the album Ocean Rain 3D. It didn’t. It turned the music into those black and white pictures they were showing: monolothic, ecstatic, dangerous, superflat, heroic. It was awesome.

Some people picked up on that during intermission. Somebody said that he cried through a lot of the performance, because the images reminded him of he and his late father going to see them through those years. Another person said it wasn’t the nostalgia, it was being flushed with magnificent, immense surrender.

Ocean Rain is my favorite Echo album (is it about death? the lamentable dance of life? psyche riding the waves of inevitable, fickle transformation? typically bad weather in Scouse-ville?), but with the orchestra, it was like being hit with a cool, wet sun. I started crying about 15 seconds into the last song. It was too much. It was thrillingly too much. People cried and whooped through that performance.

Arcade Fire, all 12 members of ‘em, can only hope to one day do what Echo and the Bunnymen did. It looks like they’re going to continue performing Ocean Rain this way for a few years. If you like Big Music, nothing bigger than this.

  214. oooohhhh i was busy so i missed this open thread… too bad! There was a discussion on Veronica Mars (loved, loved S1 and loathed S3…blah!) and Buffy….. I miss both shows so much.

Someone’s mentioned SS501. KHJ is cute and all but he just doesnt do it for me…not even after BOF..hahaha. I’m gonna sound like a perv (which is why i’m not revealing my age..HAHA. But my recent discovery to kpop-dom is SHINee.

Wow…these boys (and i mean that literally too…So so young!) are great. Such great live performers – excellent dance moves while singing. Not even Suju pulls that off well because not everyone is a strong singer. Maybe DBSK/TVQX is the only other one who does this so well. After discovering Ring Ding Dong, i searched their old songs/album and wow…they have really good kpop songs.

(Note to Suju fans: pls remember this is my personal take and not kill me. For the record, i do like Suju. I think their dongsengs, SHINee, will outshine them eventually.)

  215. @211

on your dream drama with two of my fav korean actors, gong yoo & kim rae woon (altho i also liked the 3rd one). can we just swap him with binnie?

why are ppl having issue with Kim Jae Won?

    1. He’s good looking.
    2. He’s reserved and looks polite
    3. He’e probably a nice guy that you’d love to bring home to show mama…

    ?

  216. Maeby is adorable!
I love the song for this OT.

    @212 yvhsien
Thank you! I just watched and I think I’m in love *_* His smile, his voice, the rapping <3

    —–

I had a little time to spare so I watched Boku wa Imouto ni Koi wo Suru. I love the majority dark setting and the sparse use of music is original. Has anyone here read the manga? I didn't understand the movie ending. Is it implying that they gave up on a relationship and went their separate ways?

    —–

I was wondering if there are any websites where I can buy dramas at a reasonable price. YesAsia doesn't have everything I want and the prices are
    scary.

  217. @ 216 doublethink101

” had a little time to spare so I watched Boku wa Imouto ni Koi wo Suru. I love the majority dark setting and the sparse use of music is original. Has anyone here read the manga? I didn’t understand the movie ending. Is it implying that they gave up on a relationship and went their separate ways”

I wrote about this movie/manga in OT 95, comment # 143 (I think I may be the only OTer to have read the original manga).

Ending – yes, they go their separate ways in the manga. Because the brother realized how completely $%^-ed up his love for his sister is (I would he could have come to that epiphany like 9 books earlier!!!) and leaves the entire family and goes AWOL.

Years and years later, after they are all adults, the sister is still friends with the brother’s high school BF, and the BF is still trying to get the sister to go out with him, and she’s in London on business and runs into the brother in a library, and the brother is now a lawyer, and the manga ends there.

If the viewer thought it was a doomed love story, but wanted them to be together regardless of damnation, I think the writer implied they are still in love….. I hope never to think much about this ridiculous story again.

I’ve heard the movie was much less traumatic.

@ langdon and the rest of the Tamra Islanders – I’m getting on the speedboat to Tamra, just bought the DVD. And also scored box sets of Capital Scandal (Kang Ji-hwan!, Flowers for my Life, What’s up, Fox?, and I’m Sorry, I Love You. I will have ZERO social life until the end of the year, it seems like. But I’m so excited!

    @ Samsooki

I think Kim Jae Won is a cutie, but unfortunately, neither as cool as Kim Rae Won, or was weird as Lee Junki, or as hot as So Ji Sub, or has “fistinmouth” as Jo In Sung, or…….well, you get the picture. KJW is kinda bland at the end of the day, so that’s my only quibble. He doesn’t drive me to distraction in good or bad ways.

  218. @217 ockoala

Thanks for clearing that up for me :)

  219. @217, ockoala

Where did you get the Tamra DVD? I didn’t realize it was out and I’m dying to watch the full unedited version!

I was thinking of Capital Scandal next; have you seen it before? If not, tell me when you plan to start and I’ll watch it with you (doesn’t matter when). I loved What’s Up, Fox? and MiSa…well, you know already. I don’t have to say a word. I’ve never seen Flowers For My Life; the only thing I know about it is JB liked it a lot and the girl that Tablo is marrying is in it.

How do we feel about Cain and Abel? The gravitational pull of So Ji-sub is so hard to resist…but it seems like I’ve read here that it wasn’t that good.

I’m only watching two dramas at the moment and it’s driving me nuts. I have to hurry up and pick something, because the two I’m watching are You’re Beautiful and IRIS. Have to find something to help me pass the time until Wednesday and Thursday get here! So…since both of these have recently been loaded on Dramafever, I’m thinking about either Cain and Abel or Shining Inheritance.

    Opinions welcome!!

  220. @ langdon-unni

The Tamra DVD is totally the bootleg Chinatown version, unfortunately. The quality looks great, but I know I’m contributing to bad bad practices, but I can only hang my head in shame. If I love Tamra, I’ll buy the official release when it comes out with the full 20 eps. (btw, the shopkeeper tells me that the folks who’ve bought Tamra have given it thumbs down to him, saying that its silly, juvenile, and not very good – I personally think it’s a more mainstream opinion, and perhaps the folks haven’t watched it all). I’m totally game for Tamra.

I have not seen Capital Scandal, in fact, all the DVDs I just bought (except for Tamra) were on super sale because they are older releases, and I picked the ones I’ve been wanting to see, have heard good things about (so I feel good about spending the money), and will hopefully be able to recommend and share with my family and friends.

I’ll post updates as I watch them. ;-) Sorry for not texting back, I’m still learning the Iphone keyboard and I’m much more comfortable typing on a real as opposed to virtual keyboard, and now I’m checking OT between cooking and watching the kids pedal around the backyard basketball court.

  221. BTW, I can’t edit my last comment for some reason – oh well, my apologies for posting twice in a row – but in response to the choice between SI/BL and C&A – I cast my vote for Shining Inheritance. It’s a good drama. Cain & Abel gave me a headache after 2 episodes and deciding to ditch it instantly made my headache go away. I consider C&A and EoE to be the disasters of biblical proportions…..(slight exaggeration, of course).

Also, VM fans, I just re-watched the last 4 episodes of VM Season 1 – sooooooooo good, I mean, wow, the awesome of it doesn’t go away just because you know what to expect.

    Well,

    1. He’s kind of smug looking.
    2. He’s kind of boring looking.
    3. He seems to play kind of smug boring guys.

And his hair’s too fluffy. You’d take him home to introduce to your mother and he’d end up on little in-law dates with her going to buy bricks and making little patios in the backyard… nice, but it’s hard to imagine anything terribly passionate happening.

But Kim RAE Won and Gong Yoo? The way you described Jang Na Ra earlier: they’re the male version… a little naughty, a little lazy, killer smiles, sassy, bold when necessary and when not, and a helluva lot of fun.

  223. @ 213 Belleza…

Wow. You saw Echo and the Bunnymen! It sounds like an amazing concert… Now I’ve got Life in a Northern Town in my head. I loved that song. Never kept up with their later stuff, but now I’m going to have to check it out. Thanks.

  224. @ xiahkixiri
did u watch the eng subbed clip of show and rainie on yu le bai fen bai? they were saying how for once, they couldnt help but tear up during some scenes, even when the director specifically told them not to. i suppose that’s how angsty and sad the drama gets lol. the bts special just aired today! imma head over to youtube right after i finish my homework to watch it hahaha. and also, u should watch black and white, b/c i just started last week and its already got me hooked. its really good!

    @ Kgrl
watch the clip im referring to (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2fLdwjqte8), and at around 2:50, u see show prodding alien about their “intimacy,” and alien’s reaction is just priceless!

  225. @219 langdon813

I know exactly what you mean… I’m feeling like there’s no life in me Friday through Tuesday…. I just wait and wait and wait….

Anyway, somewhere above, you have commented about the ending of the Ep4. of Iris: something like you’ve screamed or??? I ended up with my own loud scream at my computer screen…. What? Why? No way! Arrggghhh!!! I might stick with YB only from now on. Iris might be way too stressful for me. How can you function in your daily life when you are put on hold for a whole week(especially when it’s traumatic)?

    @ 213 Belleza

Oh… They were popular in my college days… never got to see them live… Must have been fantastic.

But Kim RAE Won and Gong Yoo? The way you described Jang Na Ra earlier: they’re the male version… a little naughty, a little lazy, killer smiles, sassy, bold when necessary and when not, and a helluva lot of fun.

    Hrrrrmmmm….

I sort of get what you are saying, but not quite really. See, guys and girls are different.

I see Jang Nara, and I see someone that could play nice with mo-in-law, and so I wouldn’t be worried. Ha Ji Won… on the other hand… well, my head would explode.

Wouldn’t most peepz consider Kim Jae Won to be THE guy you want to bring home to meet your parents? So, my thinking goes, then wouldn’t that be the guy that you would also like in dramas?

  227. I just logged into Dramafever and saw that CITY HALL is on their list of upcoming dramas! Rocking good news!

    @225, celestialorigin

I yelled HOLY – - – -!!! at the end of Ep 4 of IRIS, yes indeed…and bit my nails and clawed my face and pulled my hair all the way up to that point. Too much self abuse goes into watching these things sometimes (I was black and blue during Story Of A Man and Black & White). The actors and crew think they suffer for their art? Well, so do I. ;-)

But then something like You’re Beautiful comes along and makes everything all better. Even though TK kissed a skank-ho, I’m not letting that kill my buzz.

  228. @ockoala
Wow, you already have Tamna Island…I was wondering how you got it ( where in LA???) til I read your later post that it was the Chinatown version. Well, that’s another story: I bought some drama’s like that , and I literally had a headache watching those-the English subtitles were usually horrendous, and downright ridiculous. I recalled watching MNIKSS with my kids, and they asked mommy what language was the subtitles in. I have since then just bit my tongue and gone ahead and buy the real ones( you know, using part of my retirement fundings-hehe). It was just the other day when I saw some of my favorite OLD drama in a video store ( inside the 99 Ranch plaza)- 1% of Anything(Kim Jung Hwa and Kang Dong Won) and Pure 19 ( Gu Hye Sun and Suh Ji Seok). I was very tempted especially since they are too old and not available, but geesh, the Chinese version usually are bad…what to do…I finally talked myself out of it, and just HOPE that it might be available in YesAsia later on.

    @All my Cal Sisters:
We won this weekend…yeah =) Go Bears!!!

    @langon813
You and I are having the same problem…I, too, am watching 2 drama’s- Smile and YB…yup, it’s crazy intraweek…our local LA channel is actually showing Shining Inheritance now ( I just found out this weekend by accident)…from what I have seen, it’s ok. I don’t know, maybe, I’ve been spoiled after CH. All the other kdrama’s couples ( beside YB, TI and MFL) seem so blah to me…maybe they might warm up to me.

    Yes!!!on dramafever with CH =) =)

  229. @225, samsooki

Um…not so much. It’s like that other Ji-hoon says sometimes:

    “Gotta be a Bad Boy”

Unless it’s Shin-woo, of course…but I think he has the potential to be a bad boy. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking on my part.

  230. @ cingdoc

I’m a fluent Chinese speaker, so I actually mostly prefer and do watch my dramas in Chinese subs, and the Chinese DVDs almost always have good/pretty good subs.

But sometimes for the fun of it, or when hubby asks what I am watching, I will switch the subs over the English and then just start cracking up at the unintelligible chinkonglish coming out of the screen. So yes, the English subs on the Chinese DVD sets are beyond atrocious and one should never attempt to buy one of those and expect to understand what the heck is going on. (unless you are watching Temptation of Wife, at which point, you can turn off the audio and the subs and still understand what is going on – revenge, betrayal, jealousy, crazy skank ho steal your husband – sometimes actions speak much louder than words).

And yes, LA18 is showing Shining Inheritance on weekends – it’s a nice drama, if you don’t compare to the greats we’ve seen this year (SOAM, City Hall, now YB and even IRIS).

LA18 is also showing On Air on Fridays, which I just discovered – I’ve read how many revered k-drama bloggers detest that drama, but, I just can’t help it, I’ll probably ending up watching it because it was by the CH writer.

    @ Samsooki

Gotta back up langdon here – we may want to/will bring a Kim Jae Won home to meet the family, and even marry him happily and willingly, but we secretly/not so-secretly are attracted to be “bad boys” or even the “not so bad, but screwed up boys.” Wholesome boys like KJW are like plain white toast, nothing to angst about, but we do need our plain white toast every morning.

I think the earlier discussion between myself, mishane, and the rest of the Veronica Mars, Buffy lovers should give you an inkling that we ship the bad boys of these shows mightly hard, even though we know its not good for our heroine. But that’s why it’s just drama, right?

So for my drama choice – I’d choose the Kim Rae Won/Binnies/Gong Yoo’s over the Kim Jae Wons anyday.

  231. @228 cingdoc

Awww! You are the first person mentioning “1% of Anything: Kang Dong Won”. It’s my favorite as well!!! No amnesia, no triangle relationship, no incurable disease, no super rich guy falling in love with super poor girl and the other way around(sort of, not really), no terminal illness, no 3 months to live, no nothing, no typical K-drama cliches. I loved that drama so much and watched it over and over and over… till one day, I’d finally moved on…

    @227 langdon813

I know, I’ve already watched YB. Ep6 6times and am thinking of watching it for the 7th time instead of HD raw version of Tokyo dogs right now for my post- London trip relaxation hours(which is, by the way, really really fun for sure and I mean it and is highly recommended and do have pretty decent sub-titles already, Hum, talking about run-on sentences). Yep, that’s what it’s gonna be Mizushima hiro can wait.

  232. hmmm…

reading the female response to kim jae won reminds me of what a korean friend of mine told me about female korean foreign students in the US.

they have their fun with the ‘bad’ boys here and then go back home to korea to marry one of the plain guys who’d be able to support them financially.

  233. @230 ockoala

So yes, the English subs on the Chinese DVD sets are beyond atrocious and one should never attempt to buy one of those and expect to understand what the heck is going on.

Yes, I’ve been there. Especially last 2 episodes or so are the worst since the most of the first till the mid to the almost end part do used ripped subbs from some fan subbing groups, and very high quality(I didn’t know any of those thing when I started buying them in Chi-town in Sydney 3 years ago, I wouldn’t buy them now since I see my subbs on My soju and so on, it feels a bit strange really to see it somewhere else). Anyway, what was so frustrating and funny is that sometimes the entire episode can become totally uncomprehensible, sometimes, they just lists names off all the countries/major cities of the world: like Korea,Columbia, Mexico and whatever… It used to make me so mad and yet, couldn’t help laughing out loud…

  234. @celestialorigin
Overall, I enjoyed 1 % of Anything, but like I mentioned to langdon813, anything post City Hall really doesn’t “measure up”. I just watched 1% while I was waiting YB, and I have to tell you-there was absolutely no “passion” between Kim Jung Hwa and Kand Dong Won. This didn’t bother me at all previously, but after I have experienced Mirae/Gookie, everything else is so – watery . bland…
So, you guys, to “tie me over” til next week, where I can drool on JGS, I’m watching Baby and I- and this is “pre eyeliner” JGS- very cute and innocent version of him ****sigh***(I know, I know, I’m OLD enough to be his mom…but, as my best friend would say- we might be old, but we are not dead, YET :)

  235. @ 225 Samsooki,

Yep, I’m with langdon813 and ockoala… I watch the k-dramas for the guys I’m not going to get to play with, sadly, to think about how wild the ride would be if I did get to. If you see what I mean… Very rarely does the nice boy truly capture my imagination. The guy from Hello! Miss with the fabulous lips (who was the 2nd guy in Wonderful Life), is one such example. But frankly, I’d rather hang out with Kim Rae Won ’cause he just seems much more fun… and ’cause when his (or Gong Yoo’s) heart is captured by the female lead it is well and truly captured, and it’s so exciting to watch that transformation as the bad boys get some personal growth experiences…

  236. 234 cingdoc

I know, I know… There are good dramas, fun dramas, cute dramas(1% belongs here), excellent dramas, great dramas, and totally and absolutely fabulous dramas like YB, Iris, CH and B&W. Tokyo dogs can be coming somewhere up there, may be. BTW, right now, I’m pathetically back at watching YB… I have turned into a total addict…

  237. Ohh! I love cats.
I’m wiating to have two cats too, maybe next week!

  238. @ 235 reluctantbutaddicted

Lee Ji Hoon is the the actor/singer who was the second male lead in Wonderful Life (BTW: he was dating Eugene at the time), and the lead in Hello Miss. I’ve only seen him in supporting roles since Hello Miss. The dramas that he has been the lead in, like “Billie Jean Look at Me,” aren’t available with Eng subs).

I listen to him almost every day. His albumn Trinity is one of my favorites.

  239. @ 238 — thanks, that’s him! I was so glad when he got the lead role in Hello Miss b/c I thought he deserved to get the girl in Wonderful Life (I thought KJW did not deserve her at all, and I wasn’t happy when they ended up together).

  240. See, here’s the thing.

If I was a woman, then I couldn’t see myself “marrying” someone like Gong Yoo or Lee Jun Ki or Hyun Bin or Kim Rae Won or LBH, etc. You’d always be worried, not necessarily that he would cheat on you, but that you are the wall-flower and HE is the main attraction.

Let me say something at the risk of being… a little something. If I am wrong, then call me out on this, but I don’t think I am wrong.

When I walk down the street in K-Town, in Flushing, or in NYC or in Jersey, with my wife, and we are just window-shopping or doing a little restaurant hopping or whatever, and we pass a korean woman coming the other way, what happens is that the woman starts off looking at me, but then her eyes switch over and then look at my wife, basically head to toe. And my feeling is that she is checking out my wife not because she is a lesbian, but because she is more interested in knowing what kind of a woman gets a guy like me. So, she is evaluating and internally critiqueing my wife. (On the flip side, if you’re a guy and you see a good looking male-female couple, you don’t spend your time checking out the guy, but the girl). Just noting this.

Anyhoo, my point – if you are going out with Gong Yoo, then all of the attention will be on Gong Yoo, and you are chopped liver.

If you go out with Kim Jae Won, then other women will just glance at him and then the focus will remain on you, like normal.

    =)

  241. Oh, btw, Friend Our Legend…. episode 19.

Quite possibly, the single best drama episode I’ve ever seen.

Hyun Bin = just awe. what acting in this episode. But more than Binnie, the acting by EVERYONE was just spectacular.

Even if you have no idea what’s going on. Even if you haven’t watched a single episode of the drama series, I very highly recommend watching episode 19 of Friend, Our Legend. WithS2 is up to Ep 18 with the subtitles, but the acting is so good, you may not even need the subs.

  242. Here’s the IRIS extended love scene:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94IPptk5uf8

Just saw that Deena posted another link to it in the most recent IRIS thread! Thanks!! I don’t really know why it was cut either. I was expecting clothes to fly off, or something.

    But it’s very nice. :-D

  243. @annieee: Lols, yes, I saw the BTS special and the Entertainment 100% interview with Alien’s reactions. Seriously, Show loves teasing him. hahaha…

I always check out at least the 1st ep of a drama before forming my opinions – but due to my mood for comedy these days, I’ll probably watch “Hi, My Sweetheart.” Plus I think Rainie and Show’s chemistry is going to be great, and I’m all about chemistry. lols. Have you checked out Autumn Concerto? It seems very popular, but pretty melodramatic. B&W really spoiled me for other Taiwan melodramas – comedies I can possibly watch – but haven’t been able to retain interest in anything mediocre, unless the acting chemistry is superb. Hahaha, me and my chemistry. But I guess that’s why I watch live people enact a story, or I would’ve just read it (or as my brother is fond of saying, animed-it). lols.

@langdon: Oh, don’t tempt me like that. I’m learning my lesson right now (again) to not watch a good show while it’s broadcasting. Please have mercy on me. lols.

  244. LOL Kgrl!

I feel your pain, I really do. And yet I’m powerless to stop and wait until they’re complete. :-(

Speaking of Autumn Concerto, I watched some of it last night while I was drama-shopping and was surprisingly impressed with Vanness Wu. His acting seems to have improved, plus he’s one of those guys that gets better looking as they get older. He is a lot more attractive to me now at 31 than he was back in the days of Meteor Garden. Right now he’s playing a 22-year old, but he LOOKS 30-ish, and that’s not a bad thing.

Anyway, I’m going to continue to watch it for now, even though it is pretty melodramatic and kind of similar story-wise to MARS. I mean, overly so in certain aspects.

I’m checking out Shining Inheritance tonight (or this afternoon if I can get away with it). I think Han Hyo-joo is so adorable. I’ve been watching Soul Special and she is really cute in that.

  245. Ha! Langdon, we’re so incorrigible! I’ve always believed in giving 2nd chances, so I’ll probably check out the 1st ep of Autumn Concerto if only to see Vanness’s acting improvements.

Ah, Brilliant Legacy. *sigh* After months, I’m still tormenting myself over this show. I did watch 1 1/2 eps of this drama when it first aired and was not impressed. I remember being particularly interested in manipulative mom and unsettled daughter b/c of the protrayals, but it wasn’t enough for me to go through some very cliched first eps. So I dropped it. Then came the enamored cries of the brilliance of the show, the media/netizen talk, etc. and even friends who suggested watching it – so I’ve been debating if my, usually very accurate, first impressions of whether I would love a show, was indeed incorrect.

Now, after discovering Moon Chae Won (having watching MFL & then POTW) and BL being out on DramaFever, I should have more incentive to watch it. But I’m still…eh. Regarding HHJ, I’ve only seen her in Iljimae, which she did a mediocre job, so I haven’t formed much of an opinion about her. LSG seems very adorable in real life – the type everyone finds endearing, but I’m not sure about his acting. lols, at this point I’m more assured of the 2nd leads’ acting ability and chemistry than I am with the lead couple in BL. And I’m not interested in getting SLCS, thank you very much. I’m very happy with YB and SY’s lead pairing’s chemistry rt now and don’t want to risk my beautiful, smiley mood. Hahaha…Even my new found love for MCW isn’t enough to propel me to board the BL ship…yet.

I really think I have underdog tendencies, I usually end up liking dramas or pairings that most people don’t pay attention to or don’t like, then end up kicking myself for cheering on a couple or drama that does not progress fruitfully.

Darn, so wordy and lack logically train of thought. Going to LA in a couple of days! AH! Can’t wait!

  246. @ Kgrl

no, i havent watched autumn’s concerto, because ive never been a fan of melodramas or tw dramas in general xp. i hate getting teary-eyed and getting my heart practically torn out. i’d rather watch smth where i can get a good laugh, cause life is pretty nasty as it is hahaha. im watching black and white right now. the drama really puts other tw dramas to shame actually, cause u can tell there’s alot more effort put into the production and storyline than ur typical romance-heavy idol drama.
i’ve been thinking what i should watch after black and white. i figured i might as well continue with the dark, thriller-ish streak and try story of a man? everyone’s been raving about it. or maybe friend, our legend? suggestions anyone?

  247. @annieee: Hahaha, I used to be the same, very un-opened-minded when it came to shallow, superficial, over-the-top things. Even now it’s hard to shake some of the foundations of my youth. But I like to say I’m much better now – funny, am I aging mentally backward? Ha!

If you want dark thrillers, and all released, I would try MARS, with Da S and Vic Zhou. The story isn’t as grandoise as B&W, but the characters and acting chemistry was great. And I love the theme song sang by Rock-R&B singer Alan.

Here’s another one with darker, more complex storylines – liked the lead pairing (the female lead has great eye expression & plays the duality of the character well), acting chemistry, and guesswork. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Lv4u6ZaYy0

Also try this mega-hit that was amazingly well-casted and produced – I’ve grown partial to this director’s works: http://www.youtube.com/user/juliaKgrl#p/c/275D56136CD20B21/169/GWO6_q3Lxg8

For those who extol the brilliance of Brilliant Legacy, I’m hardpressed to find out exactly what is so “brilliant” about it? The acting – okay, uneven in places (I’m a-talking to you, Hwannie), but not terrible and definitely never distracting. The plot – as cliche-ridden as anything from the old-school days, but fresher and peppier in tone and pacing, so I’m aight with it. The dialogue – oy vey, so simple and straightforward, but propels the plot briskly. The eye candy – four very attractive young’uns fo-sho. And on and on, BL is a very good drama – it’s entertaining and easy to watch, but also like cotton candy, easy to digest and forget you ever ate it.

I can always recommend BL, cuz I don’t think once the plot gets rolling fast and furious, anyone who enjoys a good cinderalla k-drama will not like it, but I always found the “brilliant” accolades used very loosely. I think if you watch a few more episodes, you’ll like it. However, with so many great dramas on now (IRIS, YB), and forthcoming (Hero, Chuno, etc.), I wouldn’t spend my free time catching up on BL. I think a BL marathon is perfect when you’ve got a free weekend and the pond is rather dry. Just my 2 cents.

    @ langdon-unni

I watched 4 episodes of Capital Scandal last night, WITH hubby. The English subs on my DVD set were amazing! Hubby doesn’t understand the Kang Ji-Hwan love yet, but he enjoyed watching it with me.

So far, so good, on CS. I’m not ready to say anything more, I think CS is shaping up to be a drama that doesn’t stand alone from episode to episode, but will need a viewer to watch the entire story from beginning to end to generate a meaningful review.

I have already an inkling of what I’m gonna feel about the story, the characterization of the four leads, their chemistry with each other (romantic and friendship wise), and the general feel of the drama……

  250. @246, annieee

I could fill this thread with another 200 posts about Story of a Man, I loved it that much. And JB’s recaps are so fantastic for this series, they make it even better. Seriously, go watch it right now! I’ll be right here waiting to see what you think. :-D

  251. Are we posting at (nearly) exactly the same time again?…….

check facebook, I’m giving up on my IPhone when I have a real keyboard in front of me.

And I can’t figure out twitter at all other than signing up for it. I’m so terribly pathetic.

    - and for ALL the Kang Ji-hwan lovers out there – I think his costume attire in Capital Scandal is probably the most dashing he’s ever looked – so yummy!

  252. Looks that way! HA!!

Maybe Mr. ockoala just isn’t ready to admit his KJH love yet? My husband couldn’t believe I actually preferred The Good to The Bad…which can only mean that the LBH mojo was in full force and obvious even to my hubby’s untrained eye.

  253. Did I tell you – Mr. ockoala has started an exercise regime – which he is serious about this time because he’s actually paying a personal trainer at the gym instead of paying for a gym membership and then promptly NOT going for the rest of the year. And he wakes up early a few times a week, it’s a hallelujah moment for me.

What prompted this? It wasn’t my nagging or non-too-subtle hints, that I can tell you. It was right after we watched TGTBTW and he got this look on his face after it was over, and I knew that even he could not help but long for LBH’s 18-pack abs. So, LBH has prompted hubby to transform himself into a fit young’un again, I’m pleased. And yes, I, too, preferred The Good to The Bad, Jung Woo-sung is the man (whatever that means, he’s it).

  254. @ockoala: Thank you (unni? From the hubby talk…)! Much appreciated on the BL insight, I think I’ll hold off to the holidays, time permitting, to decided if I want to venture into cotton candy land.

General Question: Who’s your current drama pairing/couple?

  255. @254, Kgrl

Not sure if this was directed at ockoala or everyone, but I bet we’ll all say the same thing!!

    HWANG TAE-KYUNG AND GO MI-NAM / GO MI-NYU

  256. @ Kgirl

I’m probably a unni to you (though no need to use that for me). I’m 33 – and not afraid to admit it these days, cuz after my braces came off (thanks langdon-unni for the congrats in the last OT), these last 2 weeks involved work and friends all staring at me real hard, then going, have you lost weight?, changed your hairstyle?, etc., etc., until they realize alll that happened was I removed 16 pieces of hardware from my teeth. Funny how something so little can make such a difference. Sorry about gabbing on about me, myself and I…..back to drama-love!

    “Who’s your current drama pairing/couple?”

Hhhmm, can you be more specific? The only drama I am watching live is You’re Beautiful: and I am a 100% Tae-kyung/Mi-nyeo shipper on that drama. As I think the majority has to be. I think the Shin-woo/Mi-nyeo shippers are actually all completely Shin-woo lovers (what I mean is, they are all in love with SW, and by proxy, want everything for SW to be happy – which I totally get). And I love Shin-woo as well, and love Jeremy, and love pretty much the entire cast from head to twinkly toe.

But the chemistry right now simmering up the YB screen is all between TK/MY. And I don’t see that changing anytime soon, in fact, if the Hong sisters remain true to form, the angst factor between TK/MY is going to climb steadily until I’m a quivering mess by episode 12 or so. And SW will continue to have a single scene in each episode where he gets forgotten, left behind, missed, stood up, pushed aside – well, you get the picture. Poor Shin-woo. (I’m kinda thinking SW is just paying his dues – as Jang Geun-seok did in Hong Gil Dong – the amount of lovelorn glances JGS as Prince Chang-whe shot SYR as Yi-nok would sear through any woman’s brain, except for Yi-nok’s exceedingly dense brain whose remaining open spots were occupied by Kang Ji-hwan).

But I’ve finished watching quite a few dramas in the last few months where I’ve added a few amazing couples to my faves. Be more than happy to share.

  257. @256, ockoala

Apparently Kim Sun-ah was jealous of your beautifully straightened pearly whites (and really, who could blame her, my dongsaeng is so pretty) cause she got braces too, did you see that? And good for your hubby & his exercise regime; I certainly wish some of that enthusiasm would rub off on me. ;-)

Back to the couples discussion, TK and MN are my current favorite couple…my all time favorite, never to be toppled from their thrones, are Go Eun-chan and Choi Han-gyul. Followed ever-so-closely by Jo Gook and Shin Mi-rae.

Runners-up? Pi Zi and Ying Xiong, because c’mon, they’re totally a couple!

  258. @Samsooki
I know now how beautiful your wife must be…the fact that even women are checking her out. From all your postings, I’ve managed to deduce that you are a intelligent kdramalover, and with this , should I assume that you’re good looking, too? Wow, I definitely can’t wait til lil Samsooki arrive….how adorable he will be!!! :)

As for being”chopped liver” standing next to MY Gong Yoo, I have absolutely NO PROBLEM with that. I mean my hubby is not blah ( and he’s mine), but if Gong Yoo flashes his signature smile at me….drool… right , langdon813??( replace GY with LBH or LMK) ;)

  259. @ langdon

*blush* you are killing me with the compliments, unni, but, umm, I’ll keep taking them. ;-) Yes, I heard that KSA has braces, which is why she was losing weight so fast during City Hall. By the last episode, she was a wisp of a thing (but she looked so gorgeous in the tux and in the white dress, sigh, one of my favorite couples ever!!!! is also GuMi). But KSA has lingual brackets, which are brackets that go on the inside of the teeth, harder to bond and more uncomfortable to the wearer, but she can continue to act without worrying about it ruining her smile.

Me, I gots the old-school brackets, all wires and metal and such, and really, I’m happily married so the only person who should be appreciating the newly pearly whites is the Mr.

Someday, when I’m in a totally devilish mode and just looking to cause trouble – I’m gonna say my favorite all time k-drama couple is Ha Ji-won and Jo In-sung in WHIB! Let the fur fly! Hee hee, nah, I’m just kidding – though their chemistry was undeniable.

As for Pi-zi and Yin-xiong – best bromance in the history of drama, their bond was unbreakable…… And btw, yes, Vanness is aging well and looks better now than 10 years ago. Same with Vic, actually. Jerry, not as much. But I think Vic is the winner in the F4 sweepstakes.

  260. “Runners-up? Pi Zi and Ying Xiong, because c’mon, they’re totally a couple!” Young Unni, that’s so true! Did you see Mark’s speech aftering receiving Best Actor Award? Gosh, he couldn’t even hold in his utter love for Vic. Hahaha, they are too cute.

I was suffering SLCS in Hong Gil Dong, because my favorite character was CW and the crazy emperor. As heroines go, I did not like YN, and perhaps that’s why I found the drama mediocre. I seem to need proper attention given to female lead characters, if they are a lead. They don’t need to be the focus, but if they are, the protrayals need to given due cause for that focus. I.E. MNIKSS – its not the best production I’ve seen, but it’s one of my favorite Kdramas. I’ve come to the conclusion its b/c of KSA (with HB).

YB: I’ve boarded the TK-MY ship. It was official after I saw the BTS clip of them filming the seduction scenes. Talk about flirtaeous behavior! Gosh, I lost count how many times I watched certain parts of the clip. Naughty JGS is so cute!

    Ships this year:
    1) BOF – Soeul
    2) City Hall – duh! It’s KSA!
    3) Partner – OMG, the most sizzling non-skinship romance so far
    4) Smile You – My current fav couple
    5) YB – See above. ^_^
    6) MFL – EJ & TY had more of an interesting courtship in all the 5 minutes they’re together than the leading couple over the span of 16 eps. Major SLCS.

  261. @258 cingdoc

Oh honey, if Lee Min-ki ever so much as glanced in the general direction of the vicinity that I might be standing in…I don’t care if I’m standing in a doorway and all he’s looking for is an exit sign, HE WILL BE MINE. Hubby will just have to understand, this is bigger than both of us.

    @259, ockoala

“But I think Vic is the winner in the F4 sweepstakes.”

    No doubt about it!

    @260, Kgrl

NO! I haven’t seen any clips from the awards show but I’m about to remedy that right now, hopefully they’re on YT?

  262. Forgot one, ROI – Iljimae and Wol-hee

After MARS, I completely did a 180 on my opinion of Vic as an actor. By far, the most accomplished and charismatic of F4. Ken used to be my favorite, since I liked his laid-back, I-don’t-care-what-others-think personality, but he’s not really “star” material.

This isn’t trying to get into y’alls good graces, but I find many of you to be extremely attractive. Personality goes a long way, and I’m loving my new found kindreds.

  263. My ships for drama airing this year:

    1. Jo Gook-Shin Mirae in City Hall – most developed, nurtured, age-appropriate (for me), sexy romance.

    2. Seung Song-hun and his “I’m going to Heaven now face” in EoE.

    3. Yoon Sang-hyun and his ahjusshi swagger in My Fair Lady/Queen of Housewives.

    4. SoEul in Boys Before Flowers – it was either that, or Gu Jun-pyo and his pama, and I choose the former.

    5. The afore-discussed Pi-zi with Yin-xiong combo meal – two for the price of one (added bonus – hot meaningless sex against the wall scene – not between those two, of course).

    6. Hwal and Wal in Triple – even though they had very few scenes together, I would have written the ending so that Wal grew up to be Hwal’s best buddy 4-ever, and scr*w those silly women in Hwal’s life.

    7. Tae-kyung and Mi-nyeo forever and ever and ever, and that’s the only way it’s going to happen, okay?

    8. Jun-se and his angel wings in Brilliant Legacy/Shining Inheritance – sigh, he *is* the perfect boyfriend, and we don’t even need the robot from Zettai Kareshi.

    9. Lee Byung-hun and his abs – I don’t even need to be watching IRIS and I already know which ship to board – Drool Team #1!

    10. And last, but not least, I ship whichever couple exhibits that elusive chemistry between the leads which makes me feel all thumpy in my heart.

    @ Kgirl

” was suffering SLCS in Hong Gil Dong, because my favorite character was CW and the crazy emperor. As heroines go, I did not like YN, and perhaps that’s why I found the drama mediocre”

Yeah, Yi-nok is not the most loveable heroine in the world – and I would have been perfectly happy if Chang-whe fell in love with Gil-dong. But in the end, she rose up to the challenge and overcame her dopiness and general missing quarter of a brain silliness to think for herself, choose the path and the man she wanted, and ultimately, she was happy. And so I loved Yi-nok by the end, she was more than the sum of her birth and her hard-scrabble life. Like Gil-dong, and both of them, so unlike Chang-whe. And I love JGS, but he was probably too young to play CW.

  264. langdon unni, yes, it’s on YT (I would go here for TW ent http://sugoideas.com/# ). But I found the award show this year to be rather boring. Blame it on the MCs. There were still some funny and creative acts in between – the children part was especially endearing, you’ll know what I mean when you watch it.

  265. ROFL, ockoala unni, you’re such a comedian! And how could I have forgotten #5? I have to say tho, I’m partial to Xi Ying; not b/c I found Chen Lin’s character to be anything less endearing, but b/c I found the actress to be more natural in her protrayal of XY. And that wins me over. Lols.

You’re right, YN did have redeeming qualities and that was her firm resolution on who she liked, but a few attributes can not make me love a character that I found sorely lacking for most of the drama.

Unnis, may I suggest watching the 1st ep of Smile You? I promise, the lead couple’s exchanges and chemistry is great.

  266. Thanks Kgrl, I found it! It wasn’t subbed but I still got the general idea. What a sweet speech, and Mark’s dad trying so hard to get Vic to stand up and be recognized but he just flat would not do it! Mark made me get tears in my eyes but then that cracked me up. Stand up! No really, stand up! Stand up now! Stand up NOW! All while yanking on poor Vic’s arm, his back, anything he could grab. Hee!!

But WHAT THE HELL was up with that crying baby? Someone actually brought an infant to an awards show?

I have actually watched most of the first ep of Smile, You and it was very enjoyable. I’m going to have to give it another shot. The reason I gave up on it when I did is because when I started it I had very recently finished MiSa / I’m Sorry, I love You and I literally could not stand the sight of Jung Kyung-ho.

  267. Langdon unni, is your 2nd language Korean? It wasn’t really what Mark said, it was how he was saying it, that he owes this award to the person who’s been with him, teaching/supporting him throughout this production – Vic. Then he bawls. Hahaha, it was a totally “awww” moment for me.

Haha, yes crying babies are pretty normal since many bring family and extended family members to these events.

  268. Heavens no! Actually, my first language is Southern, English is second. Heh. :-)

I could tell Mark was thanking Vic profusely and when he got choked up it was so sweet. I think Vic was touched too but didn’t want to take anything away from Mark’s moment so he kept brushing off Mark’s dad. So cute. It was definitely an “awww” moment for me too, I lub Mark!

    And in other news…

Big…no, HUGE, YB spoiler posted in the Ep 6 recap thread by someone called abovo. I don’t know who they are but I officially lub her (him? whichever) now too!

  269. I just finished Ep 20 of Friend Our Legend. What a great series. The last two episodes (19 and 20) might be the best pure drama episodes I’ve ever seen. There’s nothing like it – at least, nothing that I’ve ever seen.

    !!!

    the best!

(btw, cingdoc (oh, and langdon813, ockoala too), create a soompi account and mail to samsooki via soompi your email address – got something to show ya – heehee)

  270. I’m coming, Samsooki…….

    @ langdon-unni

That YB spoiler was ALL Soompiers could talk about this morning, and it allowed me a giant sighg of relief and I promptly put down that giant ax I was holding ready to hack a certain acronym’s head off, and return to work happily.

  271. I already have a soompi account, so see ya in a sec!

And OKAY, OKAY, I’ll start watching Friend again. I can’t resist any more.

  272. “But WHAT THE HELL was up with that crying baby? Someone actually brought an infant to an awards show?”

Yeah, Taiwanese awards shows are pretty ghetto like that! (btw, I say this out of love, I’m Taiwanese, and dude, our awards shows are pretty ghetto when you compare it to the slickness of the Oscars, Emmys, but not when you compare it with the VMAs).

  273. I love Vic Zhou. Meteor Garden was not my first intro to T-drama, thank God, because it was not a very good production in contrast to the HYD & BOF. I saw Vic first in Sweet Relationship and he was so good there as a snob chef with a gloomy past. Then saw him in MG, Wish to See You Again, Mars and recently B&W.

His character in the first 4 dramas I saw were very similar, sort of deep – dark but his B&W (at least how he started) was a total opposite and he showed he could do those flamboyant, I-dont’-give-a-damn bad-boy-ish roles.

Agree with everyone who say Vic is ‘aging gracefully’.

Mark winning over Vic, in my opinion, is undeserved. Mark could have been awarded a ‘New Rising Star’ award or something like that – he deserves it, but to win over Vic? Mark did well for a newbie but I think Vic carried the show.

Maybe that’s why Mark was so emotional and his Dad persistent in Vic sharing the glory. I salute Vic for not giving in, that would be tantamount to ’stealing the show’. I hope Vic gets recognition for his B&W performance in some other award-giving body. I so loved B&W I’m getting a friend buy the DVD’s for me in Singapore even if I’ve watched it online.

  274. Samsooki, where are you??

  275. @ langdon813
now im excited to get started on SOAM lol. i wasnt sure if i would like it b/c ive never really liked thriller/action dramas. but after watching black and white, ive changed my mind. im hoping i’ll be able to find streaming eng subs for SOAM somewhere.

    @ Kgrl
thanks for ur recommendations! i’ll be checking it out! i actually dont mind the frilly, turn-ur-brain-off stuff, as long as it’s hella funny and entertaining. but when the acting or chemistry’s not there, or the plot is way too convoluted for no reason, then i give up hahaha.
im in the midst of the action in black and white, and ohmigod is my head spinning in circles. more characters?! more murders?!

    re: the golden bell awards
when i was watching the YT clips, i thought the uploader accidentally recorded it with background noise or smth. turns out they actually let ppl bring babies to the award ceremony? that is pretty wack. but u know what, i love how cute the tw entertainment industry is, so whatevs. and i too think vic should’ve won, esp after watching b&w. it was really obvious that vic felt awkward at the sudden attention directed at him though. poor guy. i mean, mark, ur really adorable, but crying like that just puts vic in a really uncomfortable position.

  276. @ 240 Samsooki: “Anyhoo, my point – if you are going out with Gong Yoo, then all of the attention will be on Gong Yoo, and you are chopped liver.”

Yeah, but you’re going out with GONG YOO. Who cares what anyone else thinks if to Gong Yoo, you’re something special? (and maybe he likes pâté!).

  277. @Samsooki 269
    ok., signed on soompi…I’m waiting…

  278. Hi all

Due to all the tug-of-war about subbings that we’ve been reading.
On account that I might look —-. My hubby and I would like to ask what’s hardsubs and softsubs? Thanks in advance.

And langdon813 just want you to know that i’m officially a fan of Lee Minki. I’ve always enjoy him in all his work but I’ve just saw an interview of him in Entertainment Weekly. Wow he is so sweet, shy, honest, cute, talented, etc etc man.
My God he came off so adorable that I want to take him home. That’s saying alot cuz no matter how much a fan I am, I have never want to take anyone home. But Lee Minki I want to take home. :)

  279. @ockoala,

“For those who extol the brilliance of Brilliant Legacy, I’m hardpressed to find out exactly what is so “brilliant” about it? The acting – okay, uneven in places (I’m a-talking to you, Hwannie), but not terrible and definitely never distracting. The plot – as cliche-ridden as anything from the old-school days, but fresher and peppier in tone and pacing, so I’m aight with it.”

Brilliant Legacy is just really strong retooling of the SBS Weekend Drama. And, so, the more you watch or like weekend or daily dramas, the more you might like of BL.

For one thing, it’s a hybrid show on two fronts. First, this kind of plot is usually cast against characters who usually between 27-35. Here, three of em are under 23 years. That changes the emotional complexion of the show, even if the plot is straight out of the K-Cinderella book. However, when the wicked mom-in-law tortured a 22-something girl and her young teenage brother, the repulsion is stronger

Second, the plot sequencing is similar to a daily drama, compressed into 24 episodes. Daily dramas that click with audiences work because you develop strong familiarity with the characters before you develop connection with them as a couple. Here, we have the same effect. The two leads are happily “dating” other people for almost half of the show; that’s 10-12 episodes, where they’re not developing feelings for each other. Why is that important? Because we can develop some objectivity with them as people before they start testing the waters as a potential couple.

BL also executes the most basic hook of romantic plots: the bad guy who changes for the girl. However, here, the story carefully sets this up. The male character is a sour, sour guy. Unlike a Jung Pyo, he seems genuinely bitter and antisocial, and we’re not really sure why. His character development is very, very well done, and even if you hated him before, you eventually fall for him.

And, finally, the show has Ultimate Oppa as the 2nd lead. YB’s Shin Woo is a sweetheart, but Bae Soo Bin’s character is perfect. PERFECT. I fell so hard for him that even in the end, I wasn’t quite happy about the ending.

Even now, I think good as YB is, there’s kind of an emotional substance and chemistry with BL that is not in YB or BBF. Nor would I expect it to be. But it really worked for me.

Finally, there wasn’t a big fanfare or concept buzz following Brilliant Legacy. Watching BL week after week was about enjoying “that little show” that grew on you. It doesn’t pretend to push the envelope or do something new. If anything, it reiterates the pleasures of a Weekend Drama that’s executed well. Of course, if the Weekend Drama isn’t your thing (and I think it isn’t for most people who follow this blog), then maybe it’s not a good fit.

  280. @278, onemorepls

Sigh….I know. It’s probably a good thing that I don’t live in Korea. I consider myself a normal, relatively well-adjusted, reasonable person, but he would probably have a restraining order against me because I’m fairly sure he’s the love of my life.

    Just kidding…mostly. ;-)

  281. @ onemorepls

Oooh, I think langdon may be conflicted here – on one hand, more LOVE for her LMK, on the other hand, MORE love for her LMK.

Someday I’ll watch Dalja’s Spring to understand what all the LMK fuss is about. =-)

    @ Samsooki

You are officially a DB tease and flirt of the highest magnitude, and I am only willing to forgive your tardiness in sharing goodies with langdon, cingdoc and myself if you are in the midst of changing your first of many dirty diapers. Cheers! Actually, I’ve been backreading on Soompi like crazy – with this sudden onslaught of good current and highly anticipated future k-dramas, it’s like a veritable bonanza of treats at Soompi.

    @ langdon

I am so wrong on the KSA braces thing, I read she had lingual, but then I saw pics from her attending the Tablo/KHJ wedding, and she totally has regular braces, all clears ones, but on the front like the ones I had. Except she looks like a gloriously shiny movie star glamazon even with braces. And I looked like a pimply unwashed 16 year old, who hadn’t slept for like 2 years. Life, so unfair….

  282. lols langdon813 and i’ll join you yah? :)

ockoala omg you should definitely watch Dalja’s Spring. Really great drama.
Then you can paint your nail black and feel like a teenager. heheheke

  283. @ nycgrl
Yeah, CA reds are fruit-forward and usually lacking in complexity compared to their French counterparts…except for a select few. We’ve sold most of the CA wines in our collection and only kept Ch. Montelena, Dunn, Araujo, and Vérité.

    @ belleza
Echo and The Bunnymen…ah, the nostalgia…would’ve loved to have caught the Fox Theatre show. :(

    @ Samsooki

Better watch out for the backlash. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
“HA HA HA” <- (That’s my sinister laugh)
    :-P

“Wouldn’t most peepz consider Kim Jae Won to be THE guy you want to bring home to meet your parents? So, my thinking goes, then wouldn’t that be the guy that you would also like in dramas?”

It totally depends on the viewer and the situation.
Personally, I prefer The Good over The Bad, and not just in TGTBTW ;) (I’ve dated The Bad…and thank my lucky stars everyday for marrying The Good).
Yes, there’s a certain amount attraction to the bad boy characters…but in the end, many of us do choose the good guy – the one who will go to the end of the universe for his true love. I think what it is, is that in dramas with The Bad, the second male lead is usually good, but is also horribly bland. Who wouldn’t choose excitement over boredom? But in stories where both male leads are relatively good, it’s the one with the true heart that wins the girl.

Why were we all on Team Park Kyu? Because of his undying love for Beo Jin, that’s why.

Kim Jae Won isn’t known for his killer smile for nothing. While everyone else was bemoaning JGS’s early demise in Hwang Jin Yi, I was holding out hope for KJW and Ha Ji Won’s happily ever after.
Without his trademark smile, it took a several scenes before I realized it was KJW underneath that beard.

“If you go out with Kim Jae Won, then other women will just glance at him and then the focus will remain on you, like normal.”

Hm…I’m confused…are you comparing yourself to KJW? I thought baby Ji Hoon’s good looks take after his omma. o_O :P

    RE: Friend, The Legend

From what I initially saw of it, it was on its way to being one of the best-made dramas this year. Unfortunately, I got sidetracked and haven’t finished yet but will continue when I get a chance. Where does the time go?!

    @ ockoala-dongsaeng
You are absolutely right – I may be a TK/MN shipper, but I’m an all-Shin Woo lover! :D

    @ cingdoc
It was gorgeous weather at the Cal game. Thank gawd Cal won (they were favored by 35 points), but the fact that WASU scored 17 points off of Cal’s defense wasn’t very comforting.

Then, I spent the evening afterwards down in Palo Alto meeting up with a bunch of hubby’s friends who were in town for their Alumni weekend (we hadn’t seem some of them in 3-4 years).

    RE: atrocious subs

Last night, I watched Haeundae with the most incomprehensible English subs (so hubby could watch with me) I’ve ever seen. OMG, it was as if they had run the dialogue through babelfish from Korean->Swahili->ancient Greek->Klingon->[insert a dozen other real or fictional languages here]->English (if you could even call it that).

    Here’s an example:
Korean: Hey, you son of a b*tch!
    #$^!% subs: Recognize the pup.

^ And that was one of the most comprehensible lines. LOL.
“Oppa” was translated as “Columbia”…and some complete lines were translated to one word like “To”.

Hubby finally gave up (even though I was trying to verbally translate) and fell asleep.

But as I was watching Lee Min Ki’s final scene, the first thought that popped into my head was, “I wonder how many tissues langdon-unnie went through during this scene.” LOL!

    @ langdon
If you’re looking for a weekend drama to watch, my recommendation is still Assorted Gems (best storyline out of the weekend dramas)….but for a family drama with the two leads butting heads, I’d recommend Creating Destiny (with Eugene) over Smile, You.
SY is OTT, whereas CD has that “comfort food” feel of a family drama (I don’t know how many you’ve watched). Plus, the actor who played Beo Jin’s father in Tamna has an interesting storyline with the lead guy’s sister…and for QSD Dae Nam Bo fans, Ryu Sang Wook is looking adorable in glasses.

  284. @Samsooki
I have to concur with ockoala-you are a tease. Did you just wanted to know my real name & e-mail and made me searched /waited for ya in soompi@…sheesh…
ok, I won’t be mad at you if you send lil Ji Hoon’s pix to my e-mail, he he :)

    @hjkomo
lol regarding poor Eng sub- it’s sooo true. I bought the Chinatown version of Cloud Stairs(no longer available and I looove Shin Dong Wook), and after the 3rd episode, the subs suck. For eg, Han Ji Hye’s character job was the hospital’s PR; by epi 4, she’s the propaganda chief ????? Since I watched this while I’m doing my spinning, I just keep looking at Shin Dong Wook’s beautiful dimples so that I would not feel the burning of my calves ;)

I know how you feel about spending game time with the Cardinals. I have to share my sportdays with a bunch of condom men (Trojans) ;b

  285. just finished IRIS ep 4 and HOLAYOMGNOWAYWTFJUSTHAPPENED?!!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!??!?!!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!??!?!?!

no. just. no. i think my head exploded. it’s a good thing i didn’t watch ep 6 of YB and ep 4 of IRIS on the same night or omg i don’t know what i would have done.

@langdon813 – question regarding the spoiler at the end of the ep 6 recap thread you referred to..where is this? i arrived on the soompi YB thread kinda late and it’s on page 151 and… my eyeballs don’t have the energy to go through all 151 pages. :( but i’m DYING to know what you got spoiled with!!! i dono if i can wait 2 more days… haha!!

but really, end of IRIS ep 4 was just… holay.

but my oh my am i loving me some of MY TOP… the man is so slick. and his engrish is so cute. can’t wait for more of him, even if he does play a baddie, holy if he don’t play that baddie oh so well *wink!*

  286. @hjkomo,

“Echo and The Bunnymen…ah, the nostalgia…would’ve loved to have caught the Fox Theatre show.”

The marraige between the string orchestra and band doing the album was like being in a Phil Spector recording. “Normal” Echo and the Bunnymen is massive sounding too. Seriously, Arcade Fire sounds like an acoustic power trio compared to Echo when they’re doing tunes from Crocodile.

“and for QSD Dae Nam Bo fans, Ryu Sang Wook is looking adorable in glasses.”

He’s really Adorkable in the show. Like you know he has no shot in hell, and he’s so dorky looking that it makes him even more adorkable.

And — to be honest — I think RSW is kinda star-struck by Eugene. He seems kinda giddy to be acting with her. :D

I had a problem with the first 2-3 episodes of Creating Destiny, because a lot of the comedy was missing music. And I realized that rom-com doesn’t work as well without some kind of sound effect to point out the slap and the stick.

I actually prefer the side story between the single mom and the father of her child. It looks like they’re going to do a noona love triangle with the younger avowed bachelor. And I like how it’s not obvious at all yet; just that here’s a younger guy, who’s never been serious about women, who seems to genuinely care for her child and seems to have a great friendship with her. Maybe more?

  287. Wow, Episode 45 of Queen Seon Duk was AWESOME. I think Bidam’s my favorite character this year. How do I know? Because I waited like 55 minutes for his appearance, and he just came in and left a path of glorious, awesome destruction. You so crazy, I wanna have your baby!!

  288. On Friend: our legend ep19.. I concur, it was the best episode of a drama I’ve seen for a good while.
Ep 13-18 were still hard to follow thro for me, if not for the love of Hyun-DongSu-Binnie and KMJ, I would have dropped it. First of all, like hjkomo, I was sidetracked, for me not by other dramas, but just lack of time for even sleep (but that has never stopped me crazily slurping up dramas)

So up till ep 12 or so…I’m LOVING it, then there’s some plot/character developments that I don’t agree with , seems out of sync, and the pacing was a tad off imho… I watched a bit of an ep here and there…labored thro till ep19…and *boom* just by that ep, it’s back to LOVE.

I had quipped on how I’m slightly dissatistied with how the ladies were written . Our main girl started out so vivid, she faded a bit, I don’t care for her EVEN after the big twist in 19. It’s nth near major though.

After I’m done with the drama, I’m satisfied, not crazy love, I’m not going to rewatch it. But it’s undeniably top notch everything. I’m not in the mood for it, I don’t have time for it, it’s hard work even as an audience, but I’m not cheated in any way shape or form. Time very very well spent. I can’t even start to imagine though how hard it must’ve been for a Busanite growing up, living through that period of time to view this as just a drama.. I was depressed watching it.

It’s very odd. Some dramas, like YB, we crazylove it and want to share and spread the love… I wish I have dream jobs like some of the JB fam here, but even with the sucky hellish hours I’m stuck with, I’m rewatching YB on youtube at work whenever I’ve got 10 min here or there.. it made the whole drama watching exp that much more fantastic..with Chingu, it’s so gratifying just watching it I need no further satisfaction. I saw and felt every drop of hard work dedication and brilliance fr everybody working on it. As an audience, I really can’t ask for more.

  289. @annieee: Ur welcome. ^_^ I’m the same, I don’t mind fun and silly as long as it’s done right. B&W gets so good near the end. It has amazing pull and intrigue all throughout its 24 eps – which amazes me since I’ve yet to see an “idol” Tdrama that doesn’t lag in the storyline (including some of my most memorable Tdramas).

“While everyone else was bemoaning JGS’s early demise in Hwang Jin Yi, I was holding out hope for KJW and Ha Ji Won’s happily ever after.”
@hjkomo: I was so enamored with JGS’s character in Hwang Jini, I literally cried for the entire episode of his death. It felt like MY first love had dead! Of course, ever since My Love Patzzi, KJW held a special place in my heart. and I fell in love with his character just like Hwang Jini did. Oh, why can’t you have both?!

Smile You: Once in a while, you’ll find a pairing or a storyline that’s extremely intriguing and chemistry-filled so you’ll skip all the other flawed/boring parts just to see that storyline. It doesn’t bother your left side brain b/c you’re so enamored, your eyes can only see ____. Watching this for LMJ and JKH, aka Soo-In. My objective critical side is being shoved into a corner closet as the subjective emotional part of my brain takes over. That said, haven’t checked the 1st ep of “Creating Destiny” or “Assorted Gems” – no comparisons yet.

It’s been decided, I’m starting “Friend, Our Legend” on the plane to LA.

@lovenyc52: WTH does that mean? Is it a good expletive or bad for IRIS? Freak, why am I asking you when I haven’t even started the show?! Must. Resist. Not. Good.

@belleza: Have yet to watch QSD, but Bidam goes crazy?! *runs off to watch*

  290. @283, hjkomo

“But as I was watching Lee Min Ki’s final scene, the first thought that popped into my head was, “I wonder how many tissues langdon-unnie went through during this scene.” LOL!”

Aw now, how could you laugh at my pain?? I thought we was pals!
And to answer your question…a LOT. And now I think of him every day at 3:00. :-(

    @285, lovenyc52

Sorry, I wasn’t clear. The YB spoiler was in the comments of JB’s recap for Ep 6. But you can get the gist of it here (no subs though, but SO CUTE, OMG):

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Acr0bOWWvU

    @287, belleza

UH OH! This belleza is turning into the Octo-mom of K-dramas!

  291. @ belleza: I totally missed your 55 min. hint when reading your post, so I waited. Then waited, then waited, and BIDAM FREAKIN APPEARS IN THE LAST MINUTE! Ugh, the aggravation. Ep 45 was really not epic for me. Too many dragged out, lagging scenes, or perhaps my disappointment with QSD has finally hit the roof (again). My fingers was constantly clicking the fast-forward button. Maybe I need to stop again and wait until the drama ends before picking it up again. I seem to be very short-tempered/moody lately. lols.

  292. hehe, if you guys have the chance…. (which you don’t, so this is just theoretical), you guys should go back and re-read all your posts on open threads.

there is some pretty funny stuff* (I would have used a different word here, but that teddy bear farting balloons says that this is mostly a family thread) that appears on these open threads. I get a huge kick out of reading what you guys write here.

is it even possible to have two different babies from two different fathers in the same womb? didn’t that happen recently? i forget where, but i think i read or heard about it. that would make belleza famous!

    ***

    @hjkomo,

Sniping won’t get you any closer to my KJH. :D

  293. samsooki,

    congrats on your new baby.

i’ve been involved in a lot of deliveries, and i’ve become desensitized to the whole process, but sometimes i imagine that it’s my baby being born, and i get a tingling feeling inside, still.

so i can picture how i’d react when it is actually my baby being born, and i can imagine how emotional you probably were when you saw the birth of your first child. a truly awesome event for sure.

i hope your wife is recuperating well. we guys are lucky. we don’t have to endure the tremendous physical pain women have to endure, but we get to partake fully in the fruits of their labor. we have it so easy i almost feel guilty, almost.

  294. @ belleza

I’m envious of your concert experience….but not of your ever-multiplying brood inside the womb. Lol.

CD – I prefer the sister’s storyline, too. It’s definitely going to be a triangle with the younger guy. :)
I’m not that invested in the main couple yet, either…there’s plenty of time left for that. But I am curious to find out who’s going to be the other woman YJ’s waiting for.

    @ Kgrl
My CD/SY comparison was after watching the first 3 eps of each. I haven’t caught up on the rest of Smile yet. I hear the quality of the show doesn’t improve (even with Chun Hee)…but who knows, I may end up finally investing in the main couple despite the rest of the drama.
It’s just that I’ve become much grumpier lately and have little tolerance left for having to check my brain at the door.

    @ Samsooki

I barely have time to read the OT’s the first time around…when do you have the time to re-read them?!?!?!?!?!?!
Tsk, tsk…you’ve got other responsibilities now!

    AND
How come others got first-hand emails, but I got zip…zero…diddly-squat?!?! (Teddy bear farting balloon filter is ON)
This is major 차별 (discrimination) I tell ya…just ’cause I won’t cede (MY!) KJH to you.
    Humpf!

    @ langdon813

At the risk of inviting you to neglect your work (can I have your job?)….
What is it about LMK that puts him in your ICOMYM Club?
Sure, he’s adorkable…but, again, I don’t feel the urge to do tear off his clothes and do inappropriate things to him. (Filter is waivering)

To me, he’s always goofy…even in Dalja’s Spring (Tae Bong was perfect, but I couldn’t get LMK’s goofy image out of my head). I’ve also seen him in Haeundae, EIA, A Good Day to Have An Affair, and Really, Really Like You.
What is it about him? I’m curious.

  295. samsooki 292

“is it even possible to have two different babies from two different fathers in the same womb?”

yes. woman ovulates two eggs and copulates with two men. each male fertilizes one of the eggs. you now have twins with two distinct fathers. this is how you get fraternal twins.

  296. @ Samooki and kb re: comment # 295

And that very scenario is exactly how the story and movie – Boku wa Imouto ni Koi wo Suru – came to be. (imagine the fraternal twins and one boy/one girl and inappropriate feelings…..and cue fertile Japanese manga writer’s imagination).

  297. @langdon813 – oh! thanks for the clarification!!! and thanks for the link! i’ll have to check it out when i get home (damn work for blocking all video access!!) and i just realized i used a darn lot of (!!) in this response. i can’t help that YB gets me really excited.

@samsooki – how the heck do you have time to go back and read old OTs?? i can never even get through all of the current OT!! and i am 100000% positive my life is not as busy as yours either. you must have magical time-stopping powers a la Evie from Out of This World.

for all Nodame fans – my friend in tokyo just told me that the first movie comes out in theaters in tokyo on dec 17. totally excited and hope that it will still be playing when i go. anybody know how many weeks a movie usually runs for in Japan? I am dying to see it in theaters even if i understand barely a lick of Japanese. I mean really, how can i pass up seeing Tamaki Hiroshi on the big screen!?!?!

  298. @kb -

I wonder how common that is… to have twins with two different fathers. Bidam and LBH has Belleza’s baby daddies?

Wow… that would make major headlines.

(oh, and thanks for the congratulations!)

    @hjkomo -

I couldn’t find your email address!

    ***

As for going back and reading current and old OT’s – I read pretty fast. And reading javabeans’ posts and OT threads a lot easier than reading law books or cases, or reading articles on recent changes in the tax law (*snooooooze*).

I wish my job were to read javabeans posts’ and snicker and laugh and think.

    ***

Friend, Our Legend might have been uneven through some of the episodes, but I am really and truly in awe of the acting job by EVERYONE in Episode 19.

I think WITHS2 will have subs out for the last 2 episodes soon enough, and then you guys will really be in for a treat.

  299. @Samsooki – did i miss something within this monster OT??? did Baby Samsooki grace us with his presence already?!?!?!

  300. @lovenyc52 -

Time is fleeting for sure. I almost always do multiple tasks at once. Laundry and drama watching. Reading posts and eating an early breakfast or a late dinner. Cooking and doing dishes, sweeping, scrubbing. Cleaning bathrooms while in bathrooms. Vacuuming while doing other chores, etc. =)

  301. @hjkomo: Yes, I think the finer details have improved for the leads, but has the general quality of Smile You improved? I don’t know. I’m just enthralled with LMJ-JKH’s chemistry and exchanges, and disregard everything else. Sorta like how I watched BOF – Soeul got me excited, and everything else was just peripheral (granted I thought LMH made GJP his own and did very well, and I liked LMJ, LOVE KHJ as guest stars).

    “Cleaning bathrooms while in bathrooms.”

@Samsooki: ROFL!!! This one totally had me pffhewing in front of the computer! And ditto with lovenyc52, has baby Samsooki arrived? *cue light, heavenly music, singing birds, and floating cherubs*

  302. samsooki 298

“I wonder how common that is… to have twins with two different fathers.”

this would be hard to determine because if this happened to a woman, i’m sure she would attribute both kids to her husband/bf.

    however, let’s crunch some numbers:

the incidence of fraternal twins is about 2%, and i will asssume that these twins are from the same father.

20% of us have non-biological fathers, meaning the person we think is our father is actually not our father. this is of course due to wife’s/gf’s infidelity. (number seems high, but it’s true.)

so if we assume that all the fraternal twins think they have a certain father when in fact 20% of them have another father, this would mean that the incidence of twins with two different fathers would be roughly 0.4%, which is pretty rare.

there are many holes in my analysis because i am making a lot of assumptions and not accounting for all the variables. however, it is safe to say that the incidence of twins with 2 different fathers is NOT greater than 0.4%.

  303. @ lovenyc52

i think i missed it too.. but i do believe that Baby Rain made an appearance. i am not re-reading the above posts.. i’ve got more pressing matters.. Jonghyun is whispering in my ear to give him some more attention.

    re: SOAM

i am on ep 5 and i LOVE it!! how cute is Park Ki Woong? he is the most lovable person i have ever watched.. he seems to steal every scene he’s in. wonderful talent.. i love his portrayal of his character. and i’ve had a thing for PYH since Winter Love Story.. but it has just increased 10fold since starting SOAM.

  304. @301 kgrl -

yeap, this might embarrass Mrs. Samsooki, but I do clean bathrooms while in bathrooms, i also clean tubs while in tubs, etc. =) it might be a slight bit neurotic, but given the amount of things that I am responsible for, and given the limited amount of time I have, I gotta multi-task. And my guiding principle is to leave areas where I have been, slightly (or substantially) cleaner than I found it. That way, wherever I go, I affect that place (be in a water closet, a kitchen, or even a website), positively. hehe!

It’s a good motto to have: be a positive impact on people, places and things, in all things, in all times, without exception. It applies not only to cleaning, also to what you do at work, in social situations, everywhere. =)

  305. @ 282 onemorepls

“Then you can paint your nail black and feel like a teenager. heheheke”

How do you know I don’t already do that? I mean, like, totally rock out, right! I will watch Dalja’s Spring, if only to gear myself to develop a potentially unhealthy obsession with LMK like langdon has. We seem to like the same men/boys/fairies.

    @ belleza

“Even now, I think good as YB is, there’s kind of an emotional substance and chemistry with BL that is not in YB or BBF. Nor would I expect it to be. But it really worked for me.”

Yes, and with the presence of *cue the Angels singing* Bae Soo-bin’s Jun-se oppa, BL has the elusive chemical alchemy that somehow elevates the drama above each and every single element to make it better than the sum of its parts.

Perhaps this is what makes BL “brilliant.” In conclusion, I’m too am a BL enjoyer from beginning to end – I just try to use my effusive accolades judiciously lest I be accused of fangirling over every drama and then suddenly I’m the koala who cried wolf and if I say a drama is “OMG, awesome”, then suddenly, it’s like, whatever, there goes that ockoala again, all giddy over nothing special. ;-P Thanks for the breakdown of BL as a weekend drama – I will wait to see if you think Creating Destiny may be its successor, and watch it then.

    Re: Smile, You

Okay, I like Jung Kyung-ho, I really do, but I cannot for the life of me watch anymore of this drama. Can I say, this drama totally brought back vibes I got from watching Wonderful Life with Eugene and Kim Jae-won, and why I ditched it and couldn’t watch anymore, even though I enjoyed the actors and really wanted to watch based on the plot synopsis.

I’m out because I don’t LIKE any of the characters, and more importantly, actually actively bare my teeth, gnash my gums, despise a few of the characters. I’m totally bummed, because I keep making excuses to watch a segment, and then can’t continue. It’s 4 eps and out for me, but keep the reviews coming, I may pick up again once most people have a personality transplant in the drama.

    @ Samsooki

Multi-tasking is the savior of drama-lovers. Keep up the good work, my friend. As long as *insert location/object* is clean, no one should care how it got that way, that’s my motto and it’s served me well.

  306. @kb

20% of us have non-biological fathers, meaning the person we think is our father is actually not our father. this is of course due to wife’s/gf’s infidelity. (number seems high, but it’s true.)

Excepting things like Darth Vader telling Luke that he, and not green wrinkly Yoda, is Luke’s biological father, I would think that the 20% number comes from divorces and re-marriages?

If the 20% figure is right… well, that just proves the saying, “One always knows who the mother is, but one can never be sure who the father is…”

(btw, kb, do you have a soompi mail account? if not, get one and mail me there)

  307. (sneaking a quick peek from different computer at work again)

  308. samsooki 306

“I would think that the 20% number comes from divorces and re-marriages.”

no. this number comes from studies on children with cancer who needed a bone marrow transplant. when genetic typing was done for both kid and parents, they found that the father’s did not match the kid’s.

  309. @ kb

“20% of us have non-biological fathers, meaning the person we think is our father is actually not our father. this is of course due to wife’s/gf’s infidelity. (number seems high, but it’s true.)”

Who am I to challenge scientific testing, but I do prefer to see what the sampling size is before giving it the weight of truth it may deserve.

However, I have but one time quibble with what this test represents, i.e. the woman’s infidelity, which is scientifically impossible to disprove if the child indeed did NOT sprout her husband’s seed.

So, to match up with the 20% of the cheating woman, men make up those partners, and let’s assume that half of them are married, so 10% of men are cheating. And then let’s take the percentage of cheating married men who don’t sire babies, okay, another 10%. And then take the percentage of cheating married men who sire babies with unmarried woman, i.e. women not in this sampling because the baby does not wrongly assume a father, but probably assumes he/she has no father at all, another 10% perhaps.

So, my extremely unreliable testing methods show 30% of married men cheating. Eh, discount my silly methodology, what I am saying is that there is a scientific way to catch cheating married women (btw, the number is probably higher than 20%, what about the cheating married women who don’t get pregnant), but not one for catching the cheating men. So unfair.

On the otherhand, must now reassure hubby that my undying love for Jung Woo-sung is not cheating, because it’s happening in dreamworld, where langdon also resides.

  310. @308,

    WOW.

How come nobody knows about this statistic?

One in five? That’s an awful lot of secrets. I guess this

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt2i0ts-uck&feature=related
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reSFKIPNIpk

is more common than I thought…

  311. @ Samsooki
“reading articles on recent changes in the tax law (*snooooooze*)”

Been there, done that. Actually, it was the research that was most interesting for me. If I could’ve done the intellectually stimulating work without having to deal with billable hours, annoying clients, and the rat race to partner…I might’ve stayed in the profession.
Aw, who am I kidding?! I still wouldn’t have stayed…I much prefer my current profession (although, langdon’s job sounds pretty appealling, too).
Yup, quality of life is much more important. :D

  312. ockoala 309

“Who am I to challenge scientific testing, but I do prefer to see what the sampling size is before giving it the weight of truth it may deserve.”

i got this statistic from a professor of mine who is simply brilliant. i have no reason to doubt its veracity, but i should’ve asked for the paper with the data.

  313. @ kb

I’m totally joking, you know that right? I’m just miffed that with ovaries, apparently women can’t cheat AND get away with it as easily as the men. Not that I mind on a personal level, just kinda mind on a gender level.

  314. @Samsooki
just between you and me…you are getting tooooo excited…You are cracking me up with all this “stealth” messages. ***wink *
I know I like you, but you multitask like me!!!I just hope you’re not OCD like me. That’s why I couldn’t stop laughing when the doc at the hospital ask me- 1)what’s stressing me ( let’s see, my teenagers??) 2)to slow down ( ok, is having to be up working/taking care of family 18 hours not normal??)…HOWEVER, after the scare I got this past summer, I forced myself to stop doing EVERYTHING. It’s REALLY ok if the 4 bathrooms are not squeaky clean; it ok if dinner is simple; it’s ok if the house is not immaculate (that’s why, @Mookie, my Mom lives in HKG ;) ; and it’s DEFINITELY ok if my kdrama is not up to date( I love them, but will not be stressed out if I missed viewing them). I tried to spend more time with hubby( daily 1-2 hours exercising/catching up &talking with him), cook and talk with my kids( yes, the same time), and then of course SPEND TIME WITH YOU GUYS @ OT(my new family/friends) ;)
So, @Samsooki my friend, sloooooow down and Enjoy ;) (btw, kamsamnida)

  315. WOW…leave dreamworld for a few hours and the place goes wild. ;-)

    @294, hjkomo

Oh, Lee Min-ki. Just typing his name makes me happy.

It’s not rational, I know it’s not, but I love him. I love him in that stupid way that you do when you’re in high school and love a boy you know you can never have; where just seeing him makes your heart beat faster and you wait with baited breath for any little tidbit of news or gossip, or just to catch a glimpse of him. I love the way he talks, I love his sometimes crazy hair, I love how you can look at him one way and he’s absolutely beautiful but look another way and he looks kind of like a Simpsons character. I love his skin, I love that he’s tall and skinny and how everything he wears look so amazing on him. I love how he marches to his own drum and yet at the same time seems like he really just wants approval. I love his perfectly imperfect teeth and the way he smiles with his whole face. I love his hands, his big feet and his top lip. I love the way he sings.

And I love this MV. It’s like this silly crush…it makes me happy and sad at the same time.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REyPun7nad0

  316. langdon unni,

that is exactly how i feel.. not about LMK, but about my 2PM boys. i know they are so young and so unattainable, yet, i just love them to pieces. if they are happy, then i’m happy. if they are sad, it tears at my heartstrings. i know i shouldn’t feel this way, and it’s wrong on some levels, but i LOVE LOVE LOVE the way their happiness and seeing their faces makes me feel. even if it’s all one-sided.

i’ll check out that vid when i get home.. still on the clock at work. lol.

  317. @lb_tmi – i second that EXACTLY!!! and this is why we’re twins. but i am determined to run into to them in the streets of seoul… shopping in apgujeong for parody MV clothes, terrorist taec leading the pack, wooyoungie making sure it’s on sale and poor maknae channie being the guinea pig :)

  318. I’m going to LA in about two weeks – Nov 11 to 15 – what is a good lodging option that doesn’t cost too much but is clean and nice. I am going to the Lee Seung Gi concert and my husband to the USC-Stanford game. Of course they have to be on the same day so it’ll be crazy around that area. Since a quite a number of DBers live in or around LA, was hoping for tips.

  319. @ yvhsien

USC-Stanford game will be at the Coliseum, of course, so that’s about 10 minutes from downtown. The Lee Seung-gi/Son Dam-bi concert is at the Shrine Auditorium, which is minutes from the Coliseum and even closer to downtown LA. So, the best choice is to stay in downtown LA and to avoid the Westside like the plague (to which I am referring to Santa Monica, Westwood, Brentwood, Century City, and Marina Del Rey) for lodging options, as the drive will add an additional 30 minutes to your commute.

Bonus points for also being close to Koreatown.

Good reliable choices: Millennium Biltmore, Marriott, Westin Bonaventure.

    Super hip: The Standard Downtown.

  320. ockoala 313

i was actually curious about the data myself.

  321. @ockoala

TQ. Will check those out. Really, Koreatown? How close?

  322. @ yvhsien

A straight shot from downtown to K-town is about 15 minutes without traffic, on local streets. Take either Olympic, Wilshire or Sixth (these three are parallel to each other) westbound, and once you pass Hoover St., you’re pretty much into K-town which is very very big.

I like to say K-town was my stomping grounds – but unfortunately, I used to live in Mid-Wilshire (old school hipsters) and Pasadena (yuppies).

  323. Currently watching the Winter Sonata anime. This is the greatest cartoon starring Yonsama that I’ve ever seen.

I kinda like the idea of favorite K-dramas being redone as cartoons. The MiSa one wasn’t all that bad. BTW, for those who haven’t heard of the MiSa cartoon, here’s a short trailer.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=580lBiXolmA

    @kTOWN,

BTW if you have a friend into eating competitions, there’s a ramen place called Orochon Ramen. Their claim to fame is their soup of culinary torture — the Special #2. It’s not so much ramen, but edible lava. Anyway, if you finish the bowl in 30 minutes, then they take a picture of you and put it on the wall.

    I did it.

    I regret it.

    But I did it. ;)

  324. @To all you guys that live in the SF/Bay Area
Hope you all are ok…just talked with my sisters who were(still are) stucked in the SF(since) last nite (they live in the East Bay), soooo the Bay Bridge is closed indefinitely until the CALTRAN numbskulls figured out how to fix their poor repairs they did last month. Tsk tsk…thank God no one was hurt when the BIG piece of metal fell onto the west bound of the bridge DURING the commute hours.Only 2 cars were damaged (it’s still bad, but at least no injuries nor fatalities)

  325. @lovenyc52

You probably seen this already, but I just can’t help but want to share a good thing…Tamaki Hiroshi! *drool*

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WG-AJYjrljI

Seeing the trailer again makes me want to rewatch the series! Tamaki looks absolutely delicious in there. Incidentally the 3rd season of the anime series comes out in January too. Looks like Dec onwards is going to be filled with Nodame sweetness in the air! I can’t wait!!!!

  326. @ belleza

Is there another Orochon, in K-town? I always go to the one in J-town aka Little Tokyo, on 1st Street, third floor of the plaza. I’ll check out all the pictures and see if I can spot your grimacing visage on the wall.

The ramen, what normally people eat, is ridiculously delicious, but the Special #2 is a certain red/maroon color that resembles not just a cesspool of lava, but kinda like what bathing in hell must be like. I applaud belleza for undertaking and successfully completing the Special #2 challenge. Takes a certain belly to sustain that broth.

  327. belleza, I was curious to see what a MiSa cartoon would be like, so of course I clicked the link. But as soon as I heard that music I was in tears. :-(

Don’t think I’m quite ready to go back there yet.

    Congratulations on your gastrointestinal victory!

  328. So, everyone is either:

    1. Watching episode 7 of YB (and recapping it, but only if you are JB).

    2. Watching episode 5 of IRIS, and wondering &^*%$%&% (sorry, not watching IRIS, so have no clue what the OMG moment at the end of ep. 4 was all about).

    3. Watching the clouds float by in the sky above.

Any of the above three activies are a win in terms of how to spend our precious free time. Now, back to cloud watching.

  329. @ockoala
Actually, since you guys keep talking about HGD, I decided to watch something of Kang Ji Hwan. I found his movie “My girlfriend is an agent” with Kim Ha Neul. It’s very good. Both KJH and KHN did something different. He’s actually very comical in this movie, and I love it. She actually is the action hero this time, and she did it very well.
In order to pass the time before YB , I also rewatched The Man who can’t get married. I can never get tired of JJH…drool.

I know I asked this before, but what happened to Andromytta?? Is she ok?It’s been weeks that we hear from her…I hope that she’s ok.

    @Orochon
I also go to the J town one. And No, I haven’t dare to try #2. I can take the heat, but, that #2 looks too “lethal”….YIKES. Wow, @Belleza, hats off to you.

  330. omg, really orochon is it good? Hubby and I wanted to go and tried but read a review on Yelp that it was just ok.

lol hubby said I keep mentioning hubby name but my nick name is onemorepls. i should rename longerpls lols :)

  331. @ cingdoc

Yeah, stupid CALTRANS and our wonderful tax dollars [not] at work.
Hope your sisters made it home safely. Luckily, I don’t have to commute far and can avoid all that mess. It was bad enough having to experience the nightmare that was the BART strike back in the 90’s. I feel sorry for everyone living in the East Bay who has to commute into the city.

    @ ockoala

It would’ve been nice to do any of the three options today, but it was way too windy for #3. Watching the clouds float by in the sky above.
and the start of a head cold had me lying in bed when I got home, so no 1. or 2., either. :(

    @ onemorepls

ROFL! Thank you for the laugh. Hope your hubby’s feelings weren’t too hurt by the last comment. :P

  332. *sigh* poor hubby had to very rarely commute to Oakland for meetings in the middle of the day with some CALTRAN peeps…and today had to be one of them. So he’s no choice but BART (and it’s his very first time) and I had to pick him up at the Fremont station after work. It was a loonnnggggg day and he’s a total grump.

Will it be better to just tear that monster down and suffer thro the rebuild instead of retrofitting big chunks of steel that’s going to maybe fall on cars with some gusts of winds??! That is just so scary

Oh, I’m soo enjoying Black and White. It must be one of the best TWDrama in terms of cinematography for all the action sequences. and ZaiZai really did do an 180… I didn’t think he had ever suck in acting, but he always seems a bit lost and unsure of himself, Meteor Garden days, he was still figuring out the dialect. Mars, I felt he did not completely grasp the character (fr the bits I saw…) This role, he’s spot on, in full control and he can do nuances. WOW! and yes, it was the best bromance, that and NCIS ( and Jack + Tony @24). Thanks for the recommendation!!

  333. @hjkomo & @mookie
Sorry to hear about the Bay Bridge fiasco( or as people called it now as”Hell Week”). 2 of my sisters have been stuck in their friend’s house since Tues nite, and the third one joined them last nite.(Did I ever mention to you guys that my sisters are triplets?). They are not happy at all(so @mookie, don’t be too harsh on the hubby), and Triplet #2 was esp upset because Wed am was company’s annual pix day (uhhhh, time to stand in the back when the pix is being taken, he he). Sis #1 joined them because the BART decided to have their own problem, too. The Hayward bound train/bart was having “technical” problems, and stranded some poor commuters for HOURS. This is one reason why I live in the “boonie” town in the LA suburb , and TOTALLY enjoy my 8 min commute to work.(I still envy you though, @langdon813 :) )

  334. @ hjkomo

“and the start of a head cold had me lying in bed when I got home, so no 1. or 2., either”

I hope you feel better soon, and quickly! YB this week is as deliciously good as anticipated. After freaking people out with my tourettes during the City Hall viewing days, I’m trying to be more low key with my YB love, so I told my sister a few times “in passing” about how I was watching YB and really enjoying it, but then she suddenly can’t stand the wait and started watching this week! I’m all like *mwah, ha, ha, ha* my reverse psychology worked!

All y’all Bay Area residents – hang in there. Without the Bay Bridge, you’ll have to go down to the South Bay curl back up around, right? I was in PA for my 10th reunion last year, and remembered how nice it is to live in the Bay Area.

    @ cingdoc

Really? Triplets? That’s really cool, I don’t know anyone with multiples greater than twins.

  335. Re: Capital Scandal

I’m officially giving up on this drama. I’ve watched until episode 11, but I won’t be watching anymore unless I’m really bored one day and have the urge to finish it.

I can say that I don’t believe this drama was underrated, I think the lackluster ratings were justified with respect to the story. Acting was fine all around, but the story and execution are middling and mediocre at best, leading to a steep drop-off in my interest just when the story arc is supposed to heat up in any drama. It started off promising, but the story never developed any scope or vision, and it remained mired in the travails of it’s small band of characters.

Fashion 70’s did the period piece angst much better and attempted (though admitted still failed) to attain a grander vision. Capital Scandal feels like a high school play set on a confined stage, and none of the actors or characters they portray are able to rise above that small scale and make this drama worthwhile or memorable to the viewer. I found the set-up cute and interesting, but the writer and director never built upon the initial origin story and the characters are left spinning in small circles around each other.

In the end of the day, I’m so bored I’d rather watch re-runs of my favorite dramas (I popped in HGD to reminisce with KJH and JGS) than continue with a new episode, and that’s when I’m certain I don’t like this drama very much. Sorry CS fans, I gave it a good shot and an open mind (I started to be bored by episode 6, and by episode 8 I was checking DB on my IPhone while watching, but I stuck to it until I can’t anymore). I don’t recommend this EVEN for die-hard KJH fans. It’s not as bad as Exhibition of Fireworks (now, that’s a bad drama), but it’s really not worth your precious time.

Upside: KJH as an uber-playboy is puppy cute, but Han Ji-min’s character (not HJM herself or her acting ) annoyed me to no end. Poorly written one-dimensional character, leading to a coupling that is oh so very boring….

  336. @325 kdxmel – i most probably have not watched that clip yet (and i’m at work so i can’t even see it until i go home. boo.) but it is sure to be delicious as it’s tamaki :) did you hear that the first movie is going to be out in japan dec 10th i think. i cannot wait to watch it!! As i will be in tokyo the first week of January I hope to see it in theaters, even if I won’t understand a lick of it haha..

@ all YB watchers.. damn that was a good episode. i watched it raw supplemented by JB’s wonderful recap and it did not disappoint. Like everyone else I loved the star/moon conversation, but my favorite had to be the very end where …

    **SPOILER ALERT!!!!**
MN is in the studio recording and she watches TK walk in. and it’s only when they are *intensely* staring at each other does she nail the feeling of the song which was obviously written about them lol. The look on TK’s face as she sings it and the dawning realization of what is going on hits him like an anvil… spot on. Then when he sees MN crying on SW’s shoulder and that look on his face too. So. Much. Angst. !!
    **END SPOILER**

I can’t express how much I’m enjoying YB.. this is the second drama that totally caught me off guard this year (the first being City Halll of course). I was not planning on watching it at all because the released synopsis didn’t call out to me and with the exception of PSH i did not know any of the main cast. But thanks to all you wonderful OT friends, i was encouraged to give it a shot and i’m SO SO SO glad i did… so THANK YOU!!

haven’t gotten around to watching IRIS ep 5 yet. still reeling from the end of ep 4 haha.

  337. @ockoala
I know how you feel about CS. I tried to watched it after HGD, and I was very disappointed ( I quit after epi 2). However, since I liked the character played by Han Go Eun, I decided to watch one of her earlier work, Bodyguard. This is where I first saw the very young Cha Seung Won(Gookie)!!!!!! The drama of Bodyguard was ok, and CSW was ehhh. He looked very different vs CH, and one can definitely tell that he has improved (like all good things, he aged beautifully, he he) ;)

    @lovenyc regarding YB
I haven’t watch the new episodes yet, but I have read the recaps already. OMG, if the recaps were THAT good ( THANK YOU JB & all you wonderful recappers), I can’t wait til the drama “feeds my eyes” and make me want to be young again( Nahh, I ‘m too old to go through the angst of falling in love; I will just be content & be IN LOVE with Mr.Cingdoc, he he :)

    @hjkomo
I hope the head cold is getting better. Try to drink plenty of fluids, and if possible not too much decongestant meds- too much of it will give you a rebound headache( worse than you started with). Just rest and increase clear fluid intake, ok, Hope you get well, soon.

  338. @lovenyc52

I’m so happy for you and jealous at the same time that you’re get to see Tamaki on the big screen! I think the movie comes out Dec 19th so it should still be running by the time you get there. I really can’t see why they would take a movie off in less than a month, especially if it’s a movie like Nodame which enjoys popularity in Japan!

  339. This is about as cool of a sci-fi story as I’ve seen:

    http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809804784/video/16357477

With the right writers, actors, the right budget and the right director / effects team, this could be unbelievable. The trailer is way awesome, but the movie could be beyond way awesome… it would be epic, possibly legendary.

Now, how cool would something like this be, if you could finance and produce a k-production like this, with my boys Binnie and KJH finding themselves on opposite sides of the battle, in a war that is more about what is means to be human than what it means to be alien.

sigh…. i need to be a billionaire and finance / bring to life the ideas in my head…

  340. @Samsooki
Thanks for the links. I agree ; just the trailer itself seems awesome. I’m glad that besides The Twilight saga ( don’t ask, I have teenaged girls….), I have something else ( more adult /action packed) to see this holiday season. : )

  341. @ Samsooki

I knew even before I click on the link that you were fanboying all over Avatar. It’s all anyone can talk about in terms of pushing special effects to the next level. Apparenty 20 minutes or so was shown at ComicCon and the lucky few invited to the screening literally cr*apped their pants (according to HK and his aintitcool bunch) – it’s that groundbreaking.

Since its taken JC 12 years to plan this and get back in the game – at first blush, it was worth the wait, King of the World, it’s gonna be huge…. And we know JC can do SciFi, Aliens is still *that* good, 20 some years later.

This is the first time I’ve watched the extended trailer – thanks for the link, I’m aquiver with anticipation.

  342. @cingdoc – i still have yet to watch it with subs, which i definately will when they become available. As we all know, YB is one of those dramas we can watch over and over again until the new episode comes out. you can bet i’ll be rewatching this entire series while on the plane to taiwan come december.

@kdxmel – haha i’m jealous of my friend who is currently living in tokyo and will get to watch it before i even get there. but she said she’ll watch it with me again cuz hello, there is no such thing as too much tamaki!!

Anybody really ahead of the game and watch IRIS ep 6 yet? i hear Big Bang’s new song for the OST is in it and I’ve heard it’s pretty good – reminiscent of their old works. Caaaaan’t wait!!!

  343. Yeah, I’m actually opposite in regards to Hong Gil Dong and Capital Scandal. HGD is kinda mixed bag for me, because it’s simultaneously one of the best romances from 2008 and the worst fusion sageuk I’ve ever seen (assuming we’re not counting 1000 Years of Love as a sageuk ;) )

What I liked about CS was that it mantained its very stagy “Swing Kids” vibe throughout the show. It was a bit like watching a musical without actually seeing a musical, and I liked how the tone quietly shifted from cheeky to, erm, less-than-cheeky as the show went on. The cheekiness is the “love or hate” aspect of the show, since the period itself is a deeply tragic era. The movie Radio Days approached it with a similar cheeky vibe, playing revolutionaries and certain prison with the same kind of cheerful protest.

It’s an interesting take on daeha. I don’t really like using F70s as a comparison, but if you’ve seen Seoul 1945 or Age of Heroes, then you can kinda see where they really tried something different with CS. Also, the ending of CS is inherently tragic.

Also still think it’s Kang Ji Hwan’s best TV work, as he was able to stretch out a bit and play broad. (Favorite KJH couple still goes to Aja Geum Soon, but he was still adapting to TV in that role.) It felt more like a true essemble piece, and there was much less actual carrying and leading than what he was asked to do with Hong Gil Dong. In CS, he was free. In HGD, he was carrying people. Plus, CS is Han Go Eun’s best performance, kind of a turning point for her as an actress.

  344. @ belleza

Thanks for your take on CS – always interested in your takeaway from a drama, especially when it provides a counter-point. My review above was actually quite terribly written – I had a really hard time critiquing CS because (1) I didn’t finish it, and (2) I still can’t quite put my finger on why the drama does not appeal to me/tug at my heart strings, when its plot and setup is like catnip to me (I LOVE period pieces, grew up on them from Taiwan/HK dramas).

Han Go Eun’s character was my favorite, and she was wonderful as Cha Song-ja. I only compared it to the only other k-drama daeha I’ve watched, Fashion 70’s, which is like comparing oranges with tangerines, kinda in the same family, but still a different fruit.

I can only say, Capital Scandal was not epic-enough at the end of the day, does that make sense? As I was thinking about how to respond to your posting, it suddenly occured to me what I unconsciously founding lacking in CS.

For a period piece about fighting the Japanese occupation – Capital Scandal was no The Bund, 1980 version. And that’s the platinum standard for me. The Bund, a TVBS production from Hong Kong, was THE drama that catapulted Chow Young Fat on his way to Asian superstardom. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the last episode of The Bund, the airing pretty much emptied out the streets of HK that night. And the ending is STILL the best, most awesomely impressive and gloriously *I can’t believe this happened* ending in all the dramas I have ever seen.

It’s unfair to compare, I know, but I did it without realizing, and so CS bored me with its silly Japanese imperialists and the political/nationalist struggle that was so micro-scripted, though I love the cheekiness of the beginning eps, but the later angst and the turmoil, it was a little too grade school for me in its simplicity.

See a young, young, handsome Chow Young Fat below, with the iconic theme song from The Bund. All remakes have stunk to high heaven. There is, and ever will be, one Xu Wen Qiang (one of the coolest characters ever written), and that was CYF with his iconic three-piece suit, fedora, coat and scarf.

  345. “when its plot and setup is like catnip to me (I LOVE period pieces, grew up on them from Taiwan/HK dramas).”

Me too. My mum has a few hundred dramas at home, and they are ALL historical dramas. The theme song to Princess Pearl always reminds me of dinner, because we always watched it on TV during dinnertime. Ho-oah-oahoah-hoooo!!!!!! :D

I love watching daehas. Fashion 70s is kind in tweener status for me. On one hand, yes, I treat it as a daeha. But I still process it like a SBS Blockbuster Melo-Drama, which means I expect certain things like childhood love story (check), amnesia plot (check), rich guys (check), poor girls (check), villain moms (check), and terminal disease (nope but then again . . . ) The formula is all there, and well I DID like Stairway to Heaven, you know. (Piano on the beach FTW.) Now, where I do love F70s is that each of the four characters can be watched as a fractured aspect of SK after the war. Watched that way, the SBS Melo Formula, then, becomes merely the choreography for how the psyche opens up to us. Roman God Joo Jin Mo’s character represents moral justicie and political hopefulness coming out of the war. How his character eventually fails to save one of the other characters represents that even good intentions couldn’t save everybody. Lee Yo Won’s character presents the rise of the proletariat, and how eventually social progress would come, not from the social elite, but the people, who would also reconcile traditional values with the future. The future is with the people. Chun Jung Myung’s character represents the generational gap; he partially represents the “lost” of is generation. Finally, Kim Min Jung represents both the anachronistic status of the social elite coming out of the war (her character represents one concept of progress or forward thought, the notion that progress will come from the West, whereas Lee Yo Won’s character represents the notion that true progress will come from the working class), as well as the traumatic scars that, even with a new identity and social advantages, cannot stay hidden. Now, the thing about this drama is that the relationships in that show follow the Melo-Formula, but they also inform and reinforce the thematic strata of each character. It works marvelously together until about the last 1/3 of the show, which eventually succumbed to the complciatiosn of live-shoot extensions.

But, yeah, all daehas need a helicopter scene. *swoon*

“I can only say, Capital Scandal was not epic-enough at the end of the day, does that make sense? ”

That definitely makes sense. And that is the “does it work?” litmus test with Capital Scandal. CS is really meant to be a kind of comedy. Cheeky, cartoony, a lil bit of screwball, a lil bit of “good looking people dressing up to the nines”, with a little bit of history all in there. It really feels like the show was shot on a soundstage, and that was intentional. In turn, the vet leads mostly acted as such.

The story was based on a different novel from the author of Coffee Prince. In that sense, the story is first a romance, then a who-dun-it, THEN about the history of its time. In other words, it’s still a small story.

Kang Ji Hwan is meant to act Big. He can do subtlety great (such as HGD, where really most of his acting was in bringing out the emotional tenor of his partners), but his underlying strength is his ability to act in space and use his voice to project his character. Capital Scandal really enabled him to show that off.

I guess it’s the same thing with Gong Yoo and Coffee Prince. Classic GY is really something like his characters opposite Kim Sun Ah, or Hello My Teacher opposite his friend Gong Hyo Jin. Coffee Prince was Gong Yoo really, really dialed down.

  346. @344 ockoala
o my, I actually recognized some Chinese drama!!! (Actually, I was curious as to what The Bund was). I never saw this drama in the entirety, but I certainly remembered running into videostore in Daly City for my sisters to pick this up. My sisters are TVB drama nuts, but since I was not into ANY drama at that time ( I’ve never seen Dallas, Dynasty, Melrose Place etc- I guess I’m a late bloomer), I wouldn’t/couldn’t name any HK nor /TW stars . I often feel so left out whenever you guys talk about B&W etc. Maybe, one of these days, I might try to watch Chinese drama; we’ll see…Maybe if Gong Yoo is in one, he he :)

  347. @ belleza

“It really feels like the show was shot on a soundstage, and that was intentional.”

And there you have it, I went in with the wrong approach and judged and appreciated CS on an incorrect platform. As piece where four good actors dressed up, played their roles and interacted, CS was good, and all of the most enjoyable scenes were the one-on-one dialogues between each of the four leads in various pairings. The politics, the spys, the grander scale of history – CS is an abysmal failure – but then it’s not, because it doesn’t aspire to deliver that to begin with.

As for Princess Pearl – I’ve made a concerted effort to erase that theme song, as well as all story lines and theme songs from Chuong Yao novels turned dramas from my mind. In retrospect, it doesn’t stand the test of time. The Bund, and other classic TVB dramas, it stands the test of time.

    @ cingdoc

You really should watch B&W. It’s really that good. ;-)

  348. @ cingdoc

Wow, triplets?! I don’t have any sisters, so I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like to have three that are the same age.

Doing better with the cold. Luckily, it’s your standard head cold which isn’t putting me too out of commission except for that fact that I’m completely exhausted.

But guess what perked me right up?
(@ Samsooki – Avatar looks great…but take a look at this)

    or
    mms://vodt.kbs.co.kr/event/2tv/dra_chuno/prev/prev00-01_h.wmv

If I still had my voice, you’d be able to hear my fangirly screams. :D

  349. @hjkomo,

no doubt. reminds me a bit of my binnie and kjh in space / slavers western in space fusion sageuk-y kind of drama, without the space bit, or binnie, or kjh, or lee dahae or nam sang mi. but other than that… lol.

    =)

  350. @ Samsooki

Your space odyssey will have to wait. ;)
LDH’s definitely in this one…just not in the first trailer. :)

    Two more months to go!!!!

  351. I just got back from a required continuing education class and can’t wait to come home to read my recaps for YB instead of boring lectures and gruesome slides(always during the dinner part!!)
    @hjkomo
THIS IS A OFF LABEL USE/ NOT BEEN FDA TESTED/just been used in our family for decades
You might want to try this for your cold
1 CAN of Coke ( somehow it doesn’t work with 2 litre)
2 slices of lemon (with rind)
and boil all in a small pot.
    Drink this while it’s HOT.
I DO NOT know how & why, but it usually clear my stuffed head/nose like that.
Using Mentholatum on the temples of the head & chest in addition to the drink also helps.

@having triplets for older sisters means:
    you will have hand -me -down x 3 ( that’s nice….. sarcastically)
every friends of your parents automatically ask you if you’re the 4th triplets (uh???)(I’m not making this up), and the best of all,
you just have to remember ONE birthday date for 3 of your siblings ;)
(We’re actually very close, and we talk almost daily :) )

  352. @351 cingdoc

does diet Coke work too? I dislike the overly sugary flav of regular coke…

  353. i reallyyy luv ur cat…………..i hope i can have one with that colour..
