You’re Beautiful: Episode 2

I have a good feeling about this drama. Everyone is well-cast and the writers do a great job subverting cliches and twisting angsty moments into a punchline. Love that. I enjoyed this episode even more than Episode 1, which was already pretty jam-packed with hilarity.

EPISODE 2 RECAP

Mi-nyeo wakes up from her dream and finds herself, shockingly, asleep on the floor with the three other guys. Startled and overwhelmed, she tries to get her bearings and figure out what happened. She has no idea how she got back to the house, but her shirt is dirty and her lip has an injury.

Her split lip triggers a memory — she had fallen off the bench and the boys had rushed to break her fall. When she landed on top of one of them, her lips mashed with another set. But she can’t remember which set of lips!

She closes her eyes, trying to convince herself that this is a dream, and starts praying.

Jeremy comes out to scold Mi-nyeo and give her the stinkeye for her drunken behavior. From his disapproving attitude, Mi-nyeo assumes he’s the one she offended, and apologizes. Jeremy instructs her to apologize to the person she offended most: “hyung.”

This means it wasn’t Jeremy, so she approaches Shin-woo next. He’s sitting down for some morning tea and says he was shocked at last night’s unbelievable events. Mi-nyeo again apologizes profusely and begs him to consider her actions as being hit by a rock falling from the sky. (As in, unfortunate and random.)

Hilariously, Jeremy sees her sitting with Shin-woo and yells, “Hey! I told you to go apologize, and you’re just sitting here drinking tea?!” Mi-nyeo answers, “But I am apologizing.”

They set her straight: it was Tae-kyung she violated. With this additional information, we return to the flashback, when she had fallen on top of Tae-kyung, mouth landing on his — but that’s not where the story ends. After she had landed, she had gagged… and vomited… right into his mouth.

(I’m not exaggerating when I say that I had to pause my video and laugh until my sides literally ached. This is exactly what I mean by the Hong sisters spinning cliches in clever ways. The “oops I fell and landed on your lips” is a familiar scenario, and I was sorta going to let it slide… but now it goes from an expected gag to clever twist.)

This also explains everyone’s horror — they’re not reacting in prissy shock because of a mere kiss. It’s an appropriate level of response, I think, to vomiting into someone’s mouth. The two guys advise her to patch things up with Tae-kyung — if he’ll let her, that is.

Tae-kyung wakes up and freaks out to recall last night. We have seen how compulsive and uptight he is, so now he fixates on getting to the shower to wash himself clean of his revulsion. When Mi-nyeo comes by to ask for forgiveness, he’s so agitated that he tells her he can’t talk to her now. Also, “Why would I forgive you?” She answers thoughtfully, “Because you’re a good person.”

Tae-kyung bites out, “When I’ve disliked a person in the past, I kept disliking them, because they kept doing things I disliked. I disliked you from the moment I saw you, and sure enough you did the thing I hate most. It’s clear that you’ll keep doing things I hate and that I’ll keep hating you. So that forgiveness you talk about won’t happen now, or ever.” He yells at her to get out.

But he’s not a complete ogre, because when he heads to the bathroom to wash up, he mutters (a little guiltily) that Mi-nam should’ve listened when he asked for time to shower and calm down. It suggests that he knows he could have handled it better and that Mi-nam didn’t mean to do it.

Mi-nyeo leaves a cup of tea and a fragrant candle on his desk to enjoy later, but in so doing she spills wax on the ground. When she bends to wipe it up, the hot wax makes her recoil. That makes her crash right into his CD rack. The contents of the shelves come crashing down, and she frantically holds up the rack to keep it from also falling, and is stuck holding up the frame. (It’s like one of those Mousetrap chain-reaction games gone awry. LOL.)

Unfortunately, a remote control also falls and sets off the fan, which causes sheet music to flutter down, which land next to the flickering candle…

Mi-nyeo frantically tries to rectify the situation while Tae-kyung showers (topless Jang Geun-seok scene!). She tries reaching for the remote control, but it’s out of her reach. She then tries blowing out the candle, but she’s too far.

She concludes that she must douse the candle and looks around for water. Seeing none, she gets the idea to use her own spit…

(I’m starting to see how she got into so much trouble at the convent.)

Tae-kyung, refreshed from his shower, emerges JUST as she spits at the candle. On the plus side, the candle goes out. On the down side… well, everything else.

Tae-kyung glowers at her (“Did you just spit on my floor?”) and demands to know what she’s doing. When she says she’s here to beg his forgiveness, he growls, “Then should I forgive you using your methods?!” and slams his hand on an empty shelf.

He only hits the case for emphasis, but the sudden movement causes a heavy trophy to fall, hitting her on the head. Tae-kyung didn’t mean to hurt her, and is alarmed as she crumples to the ground. Blood seeps from a wound on her forehead.

The others arrive in the doorway to see Tae-kyung hunched over an unconscious Mi-nam, holding the business end of a heavy award trophy. He’s frozen in guilt and shock. I LOVE how Tae-kyung answers, in this thoroughly incriminating pose, “I didn’t do it.”

(He means he didn’t make the mess, but his stricken expression makes me giggle.)

Mi-nyeo awakens as she is being taken to the hospital in an ambulance, with Hoon-yi sitting by her. Despite her weakened condition, she points out that if she goes to the hospital, they’ll find out she’s a girl.

Good point. They pull over at a neighborhood park and treat her injury with over-the-counter medicine instead. Mi-nyeo does say that Tae-kyung didn’t hit her, but Hoon-yi believes she’s too good-hearted and is merely covering up for him.

Tae-kyung calls and wants to talk to Mi-nam, asking about her injuries. It’s very cute how he plays it off like he’s not worried, and says he just wants to clarify that he didn’t hit her. Mi-nyeo tells him that she’s fine and he doesn’t have to worry, and that she’s being treated in the emergency room.

What she doesn’t know is that he’s actually AT the hospital, looking for her. At the emergency room, a nurse informs him that he can’t use his cell phone here. That stops him short, and he asks Mi-nyeo how she’s on the phone when they aren’t allowed.

Uh-oh. Mi-nyeo fumbles for an explanation as Tae-kyung narrows his eyes in suspicion — just as a truck passes through the neighborhood (Mi-nyeo’s), peddling groceries. Tae-kyung hears the loudspeaker.

A fan-shot video surfaces online, which shows the four A.N.JELL members in the parking lot the night of the party. Jeremy carries an unconscious Tae-kyung (he’d fainted in shock after the vomiting incident), while Shin-woo carries drunk Mi-nam. This leads to online speculation — was there a fight?

Therefore, when Mi-nyeo heads to A.N. Entertainment to discuss things with the manager, a snoopy reporter is lurking in the lobby. He prods for gossip, hinting that there’s bad blood between Mi-nam and Tae-kyung.

Mi-nyeo protests in her sweet way that Tae-kyung didn’t hit her. Tae-kyung arrives at that moment, sizes up the situation, and storms off.

The reporter doesn’t believe Mi-nam’s denial, and puts up a story about the injury to Mi-nam’s face, saying Tae-kyung hit him. Articles continue to appear online that contain few facts but a lot of suggestive speculation about group strife. Fans, led by the fiercely loyal fanclub president Sayuri, jump to the conclusion that Go Mi-nam must be the problem — how dare he endanger Tae-kyung’s image? Everything was fine before Mi-nam arrived.

Sayuri’s a little unhinged (in an entertaining way), and thinks this is a ploy by Mi-nam to garner sympathy for himself. She leads a protest to kick him out of the group.

Jeremy’s an interesting character, because he’s a happy-go-lucky type, but in this circumstance he’s peeved at Mi-nam because his hyung Tae-kyung is suffering. He (half-jokingly) sics his dog at her, which jumps at her playfully and slobbers over her face. (Btw, the dog is named Angelina Jolie.)

Jeremy scolds Mi-nyeo for ruining Tae-kyung’s room. She’s glum from all the drama and because of the bloodthirsty fanbase, and promises to clean up the mess she made.

When she starts to leave, he grabs her because he’s not done talking to her. Being suddenly in close quarters makes her panic, and she runs away. Interestingly, her frantic reaction makes Jeremy uncomfortable. He thinks it’s because it makes him seem like the bad guy (like he was a pervert for grabbing Mi-nam), but I’m also going to suggest that he feels an odd attraction to her that unnerves him.

Shin-woo is more kind, asking how she’s doing and indicating her injury. He reaches for her forehead, and she recoils. Shin-woo says, “If you flinch like that, everyone will catch on.” Mi-nyeo is alarmed, thinking he means that they’ll catch on to her girl identity, but he clarifies that they’ll assume she really was hit by Tae-kyung.

Mi-nyeo heads to Tae-kyung’s room to clean up before he gets back. Among the scattered items, she finds a lot of old CDs and videos of Mo Hwa-ran, a singer famous in the ’90s, and guesses that he must be a fan. When she spots a photo of the singer with a young boy, however, she wonders if Tae-kyung is the boy in the picture.

Of course, this is when Tae-kyung arrives, displeased to see her rooting through his stuff. Fed up, he grabs Mi-nyeo’s arm and drags her downstairs to confront managers Sung-chan and Hoon-yi, who have just arrived. He wants Mi-nam kicked out, or he’ll leave instead — then makes good on that threat by storming out of the house.

Mi-nyeo sits in a funk, telling Hoon-yi that she’s finding it increasingly difficult to endure; she’s all out of energy. Her manager, however, takes the glass-half-full approach: this is a good thing for her. If she grew too friendly with Tae-kyung, she’d be in greater danger of being found out. The benefit of being hated is that he’ll keep his distance, and she’ll be able to last the month.

He points out that Mi-nam has shot to the top of internet search results, reminding her that being famous will help find her mother.

We also introduce actress Choi Ran, a Hong sisters regular, as Mi-nam’s aunt. She brags about being related to Mi-nam, although her friends remind her that she dumped the kids off at the orphanage. The flighty, selfish aunt says that she’s still family — she’s better than the mother who abandoned them, whom they don’t even know. It’s clear that while the twins were a burden as children, now that one is famous, she’s willing to rekindle the relationship in the name of “family love.”

I find it a little curious that Mi-nam and Tae-kyung both have mother-abandonment issues, but I’m going with it for now. Tae-kyung runs into the glamorous woman from Episode 1, and we realize that this is Hwa-ran, his mother. He freezes when they come face to face with each other in the elevator, and he tries to cover up the intensity of his reaction with coldness.

For instance, he calls her “madam” rather than “mother,” saying that he only called her Mother in the past out of childish naivete, thinking biology made someone a parent. He warns her not to act familiar with him — back when he was a kid, she was the famous one and didn’t act like his mother, but now the tables are turned and he’s the famous one. He doesn’t want her causing trouble.

Shin-woo has been remarkably perceptive, and we sense he knows more than he’s letting on. Jeremy, on the other hand, is cheerfully oblivious. He wonders what Shin-woo’s thinking about, and Shin-woo replies that Jeremy should figure it out himself, although he doubts that that’s possible since he’s so dense.

To prove that point, Jeremy brings up how strange Mi-nam is — first, he’s weirdly sensitive and even cried after Tae-kyung left the house. On top of that, he’s too soft and smooth: “It makes me feel bad.” Jeremy sees that Shin-woo doesn’t share his opinion, and comments that he must like Mi-nam. After all, he took care of him the night of the party.

This leads us to a flashback, when Shin-woo had helped Mi-nam out of the party. He’d looked closely at Mi-nyeo’s face, and as he held her, he’d started to sense the truth — that Mi-nyeo is really a girl.

Jeremy: “You must be enjoying hanging around with that girly guy.”
Shin-woo: “I’ll have fun watching for now.”

Jeremy doesn’t get that he means he’s going to enjoy her antics posing as a guy, and shrugs off the comment.

Mi-nyeo is thrown another hurdle when Sung-chan announces that Mi-nam will be making his stage debut at the Asia Music Festival, which is in two weeks. Hoon-yi and the stylist (who’s a good friend of Hoon-yi and knows the truth) both protest, saying Mi-nam isn’t ready yet, but Sung-chan is eager to strike while the iron’s hot.

Mi-nyeo doesn’t think she can do it, but she is thrust into activity — photo shoots, dance rehearsals.

Stylist Wang is impressed with Mi-nyeo’s hard work, but Mi-nyeo confides that she’s looking forward to righting everything when her brother returns. She’s wronging everyone by lying now, so she must endure the hardship that comes with it.

The stylist is sympathetic, and they share a nice dramatic moment — only to cap off the scene with the stylist telling Mi-nyeo that she has gone overboard with the stuffing. OF HER PANTS.

Sung-chan has a webchat with Tae-kyung, who has moved out and is now staying on his own at a hotel. The manager tries to convince Tae-kyung to participate in the Asia Music Festival, and we can tell Tae-kyung’s anger has cooled a little because he grudgingly agrees to consider it.

Sung-chan sends the wrong email, however, and has to rush off to find the right information. He instructs Tae-kyung to sit still and not move. As he leaves, he inadvertently moves his webcam, and a few moments later, it captures a different scene altogether.

Tae-kyung watches as the stylist bursts into the room with Mi-nam. We know that she has found one of Mi-nyeo’s fake balls (literal and figurative) in the dance studio and is frantic to correct the mistake before someone notices, but to Tae-kyung’s eyes this scene takes on a different slant as the stylist whispers that they’ll be private here and fumbles for Mi-nam’s pants.

Tae-kyung does a spit-take — and just then, the light goes out at a crucial moment as the re-stuffing takes place. When the lights come back on, the stylist prods Mi-nyeo’s chest to check that the bindings are tight. There’s not not much to bind in the first place, “But still, you’re a girl.”

Tae-kyung is incredulous: “She was a girl?”

OH MY GOD.

I LOVE THIS. (More on this later.)

Tae-kyung pushes “record” on his laptop to get the last snippet, as Mi-nyeo says with relief, “Thanks to you, nobody will find out I’m a girl.”

Tae-kyung drives to the studio to “confirm something important,” and walks in on rehearsal where the A.N.JELL guys are practicing with the other dancers. Everyone watches curiously as he beelines for Mi-nyeo, and he stares at her intently.

Suddenly, he grabs her in a hug. And feels the truth for himself.

He says incredulously, “Go Mi-nam… you!”

But he doesn’t get to finish that thought. Sung-chan walks in with a reporter, who starts snapping photos happily. Sung-chan is pleased at the sight of the two members seemingly on good terms (and this also suggests to the others that this was a photo op).

Tae-kyung tries to get the manager alone to tell him his important news, but Sung-chan blows him off. So when Tae-kyung insists they have to kick Mi-nam out of the group, it comes out sounding petty and he is waved aside.

Mi-nyeo is just relieved that nothing weird(er) happened with Tae-kyung, and is instructed by her manager to the second-floor bathroom to avoid showering with the other boys. However, they’re unaware that the downstairs shower is broken, and that the boys are headed upstairs.

Jeremy notices, “Mi-nam really doesn’t wash.” Shin-woo knows the real reason why, but since Jeremy is so endearingly thick, he concludes, “Like Tae-kyung hyung said, he must really be dirty!”

Hoon-yi had been guarding the door, but a phone call makes him wander away, so Mi-nyeo freezes to hear their approach. Thankfully she’s done showering, but now she’s stuck in the locker room, and the boys are all getting nekkid! I LOVE the censoring — laugh-out-loud hilarity, folks! — as everyone’s modesty is preserved with animated clouds.

But what’s an innocent almost-nun to do??? As she does in times of stress, Mi-nyeo appeals to the Mother Superior, who appears (in her imagination) to give her some advice. She reminds Mi-nyeo of the cherubs in religious paintings, which have never given her a sense of shame: “Think of them as cherubs appearing as God made them.”

It is hysterical. (I couldn’t stop laughing.)

It does do the trick, though, since Mi-nyeo is able to peacefully walk toward the exit without shame, as she pictures all the boys as angelic babies.

She snaps out of her reverie when Shin-woo covers her eyes with a towel. Smiling, he tells her: “Since you’re done washing, you can leave. If you’re here, I can’t shower.”

She totally misses the meaning behind that, and she rushes out. She sighs in relief, “Great, I wasn’t found out!”

But she gets the response, “You have been found out.”

Tae-kyung stands facing her, arms akimbo. Coming closer, he announces, “I’ve found you out.”

Uh-oh. Mi-nyeo prays, “Mother Superior, what do I do now?”

COMMENTS

I was thinking we’d get another Coffee Prince with conflicted emotions and attractions and ten episodes of anticipation, but Tae-kyung finds out the truth now?? THIS IS FANTASTIC.

The setup to this drama (crossdressing and romantic comedy) means that there are a few predictable elements that must happen, like someone finding out the truth early, and someone being uncomfortably attracted to Mi-nam. However, what makes this drama strong from a narrative perspective is that it swiftly takes us PAST these cliches, so that instead of dragging out the obvious ending for episodes, we address that point right away and move on. That makes me more excited for what’s to come, since there’s more of an element of surprise.

Aside from that, I again have to point out the great casting for all four idols. Jang Geun-seok has a wonderful sneer, and he really commits to it — I feel like this is the most committed I’ve seen him to a role in a long time.

I also love the manager’s overreliance on English phrases. Oh, it’s hella cheesy but that’s why I love it — he thinks it’s cool but it makes him look silly.

I love Jeremy for his dunderheadedness — how oblivious is he? He’s the first one sensing an inkling of attraction because his body takes note of the signs — Mi-nam’s girlish mannerisms, smooth skin, vaguely feminine ambiance — but his brain is a step behind his body, so he’s the last one to know.

And while Tae-kyung is a great character who I’m sure I will end up rooting for, HOW GREAT IS SHIN-WOO? I like him so much. He’s the Rui that Kim Hyun-joong couldn’t quite be. I have in the past suffered from Second Lead Crush Syndrome, where I felt bad for secondary characters who never got the girl despite treating her better than the hero, and I think Shin-woo will continue this trend. But I think of this in a positive light, because the benefit to a strong conflict like this is that the love triangle actually feels tense and engaging.

"I’m wondering if Mi-nyeo and Tae-kyung might be half-siblings. The woman in episode 1 noticing Mi-nam on TV was Mo Hwa-ran, no?"
If something like this happens, I would HATE THIS DRAMA. No matter how funny everything is, i'm sorry i'm not ready to think MN and TK are siblings. Hong sisters, any other surprises are acceptable.

I really don't think they are siblings or even related at all, this is kinda like the situation with My Girl. The Hong Sisters has always been making mockery of all the kdrama cliches such as incest, terminal disease and so on so I don't think they will pull an incest relationship here. I think they are two different women, and yeah it's making us viewers confused on purpose, but I doubt they are siblings. It just doesn't make sense, and not really Hong Sisters' style.

I thoroughly agree with you on all of your points. I loved the second epi more than the first, and it was just so entertaining and hilarious to watch.

i was surprised that Taekyung found out about Minyeo so early, because I was anticipating the whole Coffee Prince "Am I gay" thing, but this makes things better, and save them from all the trouble of heartbreak and uncertainty. But now I'm curious about how it's going to turn out.. I suppose Jeremy will be that confused person tehehe, but he acts very flamoyant already.

I LOVED Shinwoo in this. He was so charming and caring that you just can't help but fall in love with him. Even though I love Jang Geun Seok and Hongki, but man he's just so charming. He's going to protect her from all of Taekyung's anguish behaviors I'm sure... a good shoulder to lean on. I laughed at the part when you said it was the Rui character KHJ couldn't be. It's so sad but it's true. KHJ's silent love is a little too silent.

The other parts I found hilarious... the webcam incident. I was on the edge of my seat and laughing sooo loudly when it happened. Gosh to Taekyung it must have been horrific to look at, until they revealed she was a girl of course. and I was actually wondering what those balls were... haha silly me.

It's kind of funny and pervy that the men hug her tightly to feel her breasts, but I guess that's the only way to tell.

I was kind of confused about the mother issue... from epi 1 I thought the rich lady was minyeo's mom? but it's actually taekyung's mom? hmm but I guess we'll see later on

Man I can't wait until Wednesday and Thursday! The anticipation is already killing me...

Thanks for an awesome recap! After the disappointing MFL, I am glad that I have something to cheer me up! This drama has definitely gained my interest (surprisingly) especially since I was planning on skipping it. But, WOW, since the first episode my sides have been aching from laughing. The cast is perfect and I am so happy that the major surprise element of Park Shin Hye's character has already been revealed.

It will be very interesting how this will now be played out between two very HOT guys! Keep it up and your work is always appreciated JB!

I also like! All very fun.

JGS was a stretch as a tormented king (what *were* they thinking?), but perfect as a sulky pop star. Love his one-eyed glower. And the fierce strut accompanied by fierce music.

I'm sort of resigned to the Hong Sisters not ever doing anything as good as Delightful Girl Choon Hyang, but I do appreciate that they don't get lazy or just coast on cliches. Was pleasantly surprised that they're exposing her so early, and relieved that they aren't going to spin out the "what is this strange attraction I feel?" cliche for episodes on end, as lesser writers would.

I think it's indicative of how much I enjoy this, that little details bother me. Because I can take it seriously, and the quality of everything else is quite high. I don't mind that GMN sings like a boy soprano (because boy sopranos ARE boys!), but it does bother me that they would think to add a classical-music boy soprano to a rock band. Because most classically-trained boy sopranos can't do rock music! And their voices can crack any moment, at which point they have to leave the band for years... quibble quibble. Also, why mount a webcam on a MacBook which has a built-in cam? Apart from having something for the camera to zoom in on to indicate someone is watching... quibble quibble....

Isn't it like Hana Kimi where the main character finds out quite early on and then tries his best for noone else to find out?

i was holding out to watch this drama until i had more time partially because i thought that the first few episodes would be the typical "the members being attracted to the supposed other male member" . as much as i enjoyed it in coffee prince, the second time wouldn't have been fun to watch. BUT now that two of the members know (and one of them being the main male lead), i'm freakin' ecstatic and will now HAVE to watch this drama. sigh and yeh! at the same time. haha.

@45, mee

I think we were meant to wonder about which "boy" the woman was referring to in the context of that particular scene. It's later made clear whose mother she really is.

I don't think we have to worry about any pesky "are they/aren't they siblings" scenarios. I'm choosing to believe (even though it's early days) that this drama is too smart for that.

You know, I'm starting to think that when they showed the (then unrecognized) woman watching the press conference, she was actually talking about Tae Kyung. But it was left purposefully vague so us viewers would be doing what we're doing now- fretfully praying that they aren't related lol.

I think it would be a refreshing twist if they turned out to be BFF/siblings instead love love interests. Then she decides to join the band and not become a nun... I'm kinda tired of the love love angle. Why can't boys and girls be anything else but loves or one sided JiHoon style stalkers. Family would be good for the both of them.

I'm LOVING THIS DRAMA!
I really hope it's the next Full HOuse/ My Girl because it deserves it. A drama that makes me proud of Kdramas! Jeez, took long enough for one of these to come out.
I loved that JGS found out early too.
And i Thought Shin-woo knew she was a girl bc he felt her boobs in the hug- since thats how JGS knew.

If anyone is just reading recaps without watching the show, i HIGHLY suggest you watch the whole this. For instance Javabeans left out the part where theres a HALF NAKED HONGKI WITH COOL HAIR AND A MISCHEVIOUS GRIN in the shower scene, and it is good eye candy. And i dislike Honki! but this dramas making me like him! AHHH

God knows how many times i refresh Dramabeans.com to see if you already post the 2nd episode's recap :D --- even though I've seen Ep.2 with sub! But i really want to know your take. That's how much I love your writing, Javabeans.

I read on Soompi that Jung Yong Hwa ( SHIN WOO ) is Jung Kyung Ho's younger brother. Now that I know the fact, well Yong Hwa does have some physical similarities with his hyung!

This episode's hilarious. And the preview at the end is killing me.

BTW, i think the mother wasn't talking about Mi Nam when she saw ANJELL on TV...She talked about Tae Kyung. So I don't think Mi Nam would be related to Tae Kyung.

Most of dramas with girl crossdressed as boy, they only think how to hide their breasts...but this is the first time I know that Mi Nyeo remembers to put balls in her pants!!! :D and why should she use GLOW IN THE DARK ones!! hahahaahaaaaa.

I love the casts. And Jung Chan!! I only saw him once in Lovers - he was so serious there, but he can do comedy!! Now I like him more. :D

See you next week, thank you for the wonderful recaps, and this fun discussion!!

I like Shin Woo a hella lot more than Kim Hyun Joong. (Sorry for making comparisons here, I know lots of people adore Ji Hoo... It's only my opinion.)

Anyway, I can't think of another Kdrama episode this whole year that made me laugh like a crazy woman in front of my laptop... I'm overjoyed that a such hilarious drama with actors I actually like has appeared. The Hong sisters have truly outdone themselves this time! I've never seen a funnier drama from them! (Loved that video cam scene.. *wink*)

All the characters even the supporting ones are given their own quirks from the sadistic stylist, 'cool' manager (whom I think resembles JYP a little), cowardly agent etc...

And the boys themselves! SHIN WOO! *DROOL* JEREMY! (Cutely dense!) Park Shin Hye is more than bearable! And I still love Jang Geun Suk to death (I've even gotten used to the hairstyle, it suits his severe personality...).

I completely agree! and tell the truth I though of your commentary and this blog when I watched this episode b/c finding out she's a girl in the first episode does really put a different twist on the genre we have seen so many times. So diff from anything I have seen/read i.e. Coffee Prince, Hana Kimi, etc.

oh man, so many things I love about this show already!!

For starters, I think many people (and myself included) took a collective sigh of relief when the lead male (and secondary) found out that she was not a he but actually a she. Thank god its not going to follow the already tread upon "Coffee Prince" serious questioning-one's-sexuality route.

I love how the show pokes fun at the whole idol world and world of idol worship. Hope it continues to do that some more cause I love me some satire.

In general, I love how the show doesn't take itself too seriously. The humor is laugh out loud funny most of the time and even down right clever at others. Seriously, the shower scene w/ the clouds and babies made my day.

Shin woo was a dark horse for me. I didn't expect him to be the second male lead. I thought it would be Jeremy as he got more press about the drama tham Shin woo, but I'm definately happy about it. Just like everyone, I ws in love even in the first episode.

Im so looking forward to the next episode. The preview was giving me giggles as they showed Shin woo telling Min nam to call him oppa. Totally a kilig moment. Im a sucker for those "call me oppa scenes" example Brilliant Legacy. :)

Im glad everyone is doing a great job. Hope the cast and the Hong Sisters keep it up...

i love, love, LOVE the fact that 2 out of the 3 boys know she's a girl - because lets face it, she looks, sounds and acts like a girl. i'm so glad we don't have to dispend disbelief that they can't actually figure that out since it's plain as day. thankfully it also rules out the "why am i feeling this way for a guy" drama. i'm eager to see the rest. the Hong sisters are responsible for my fave drama of all time (My Girl) so i'm hoping it's a long those lines.

(also loved the funny self referencing when the manager saw one of the top searches was "You're Beautiful" lol)

After Boys Before Flowers there really wasn't any other K-Drama that held any interest to me. After watching the first episode of this series I have good hopes. So far I really like the main characters and the actors who portray them. Let's just hope that the rest of the series follows the same consistency.

"You're Beautiful" drama director Hong Sung Chang , is he related to the Hong sisters or coincidence having the same surname ???.

Some shorts connected us to dramas like hana kim, Nobuta wo produce, F4 - taiwanese, Goong, My girl,Tamra the island, Who are you?, coffee price but of course different story line entirely.

Just to let viewers know about the locker room scene if you look carefully at the big mirror you noticed they're running around in BOXERS camouflage by the cloudy censorship, - very funny, the egg peddling scene is so funny too!
Oh! min nyo manager and the stylist will be having more fun time.

I think the 1st and 2nd lead will protect her as they are in the band group and Tae Kyoung is the leader of the band , as for hongki, I hope he will find out soon although very dense !!.

More hilarity coming our way - and trouble from the fanclub and after school UEE.

JB thanks for the swift recaps. This could be one of the hit drama for 2009

JGS - Mr "flawless" eyeliner reminds me of the late Michael Jackson !!!.

I completely agree how Shin-woo is exactly what Kim Hyung Joong should've been and how I wish he was! However, I still find his acting just a tad bit wooden but a lot more smoothed down from Hyung Joong. Either way, I'm really excited for this drama and I love the unexpected twists and laughs.

This is really the drama I've been waiting for this year!! THANK YOU 2009 trendy Kdramas for redeeming yourselves!!

I'm really excited for Wednesday and Thursday!

I also can't wait for more of your recaps and comments! Thanks Dramabeans!!

I have loved the spin on the storyline: girl singing in hopes of finding her parents (August Rush), dressing as a boy in the process (Coffee Prince), working to be a nun which is not her true calling (Sound of Music), and a love triangle that screams Hana Yori Dango. {I've always been Team Makino&Rui...so it's inevitable that I am leaning towards Team ShinWoo&MiNam}

I have watched EP 2 twice! It has this strong pull where it has stopped me from watching Tamna for the 3rd time. The music is just perfect! The angelic song playing as she floated down alongside the guys propped next to the statues, in their white attire. The slow motion play when Mi Nam tilts her head back and Shin Woo stares at her neck, lips....*drool...{sorry!fantasizing mid sentence} AND they hug. Well - not really. She drapes herself on him and I couldn't resist shrieking. I am going to loooooooooove this! This triangle would've played perfectly for BOF.

Geez! How can I not like Shin Woo?! He's a great guy. But I'm holding out on totally rooting for him since I know he's gonna break his heart in later episodes. And I'll surely feel his pain. Waah!

I love Jang Geun Seok's voice though. Sexxay and commanding!

Absolutely loving this drama - a truly "laugh your ass off" comedy. I did notice some Japanese elements to this drama, like the animation and dramatic interludes. There are some familiar scenes from Hana Yori Dango and Hana Kimi. I totally agree with you that Shinwoo is so much like Rui. He's so gentle and sweet! The guys are all great, but I also like Park Shin Hye and her fresh style of acting. She's so cute and pulls off being a guy very well.

OMG the glow-in-the-dark balls were outrageous and brilliant! When the lights went off, Tackyeon could only see two balls moving mid-air in the dark. The scene went from a potential racy sex scene to a bewildering magic show of glowing balls to the ultimate revelation. The layers of connotations and the possibility that it could have taken many different turns in the plot makes this scene so damn good.

Wow, second episode already JB, thanks a lot...
2 out 3 boys have figured out MN is a girl, woow, the twist, the twist...
And they have to use glow in the dark "balls", it's just tooooooooo hilarious, even the fact that MN also put balls in her pants (not to mention she put more than 2) make me laugh out loud XD
i regret watching the preview, it made very impatient for next wednesday...
like everyone else i too have the Second Lead Crush Syndrome, coz you've said it correctly, "HOW GREAT IS SHIN-WOO? I like him so much. He’s the Rui that Kim Hyun-joong couldn’t quite be" .... sigh....

This drama has been SO good so far!!!
I'm a little bit worried, but very excited about the fact that the guys find out that she's a girl so early on. I don't know what to expect! And that worries me! hahahahaa
But I laughed SOOOO hard during this episode. I was dying with laughter! Every 10 minutes was something completely unexpected, completely out of the ordinary. I really really enjoyed this episode. It was very refreshing.
I cannot wait until next week!

Wow! I love the early reveal! And there doesn't seem to be a cheap way of misleading Tae-kyung into doubting what he heard.

Obviously, Coffee Prince revealed things fairly late. While Sano found out very early in Hana Kimi (both in the manga and the drama), he was already attached enough to Mizuki to keep her secret (and keep it secret from her!) so that she wouldn't have to leave. Tae-kyung hasn't even had a chance to really warm up that much to Mi-nyeo, so it'll be interesting to see how this gets resolved and how he gets convinced to keep the secret. Because it'll be a very short series if Mi-nyeo goes back to the convent!

Wow!!! I was blown away by this episode. I was planning to enjoy this series for its snappiness while not being able to fully get into it because I'm not one for over-androgynousness. But wow, I'm not ashamed to be proven wrong, excellent stuff and so original!

I was already surprised that they had Shin Woo figure it out so early but I figured... what the heck. But Tea-Kyung??? Color me flabbergasted!! My jaw literally dropped open and stayed that way for at least a minute. I was watching this on Viikii and one of the comments was like "He knows already? How long is this drama, five episodes?" I love that they all can figure it out with just one hug because, really, she's the worst male impersonator ever. It would have annoyed me to no end if no one figured it out until episode 12. I didn't think Kdramas had it in them to make this much sense! Immediately, my mind started buzzing with possibilities: do all let on that they know and band together to keep the truth from getting out into the public? Do the guys not tell Min-yeo and keep her tiptoeing around in a bizarro world kind of backwards Coffee Prince? Do they all assume that nobody else knows? Of course, some of those questions were answered in the last few minutes of the series but still, for the first time since I figured out the Kdrama formula,I have no idea where they are going with this and I'm loving it!!!

And, oh my goodness, Shin-Woo!!! I mean, I know he's got Decoy Guy written all over him but he's wonderful! I promised myself I would never again fall for Decoy Guy and haven't been this close since The Voice in Coffee Prince, who I totally fell head over heels for (but he had his own story outside of just being Decoy Guy; and all the main characters in that show were Decoys at some point or another so there was no heartbreak involved). But, I think I love Shin-Woo because he totally reminds me of the the Voice's CP Character: The laid-back nice guy who is perceptive enough to see the truth in the situation but cool enough to sit back and enjoy the show as things work themselves out. He's totally Choi Han-Sung!

I think it's really unfair of them to spring such a Decoy Guy on us. We're all going to get hurt in the end. I would say that we need to hold out as long as we can but it's far too late for me...

By the way, don't you hate how it seems compulsory to compare every new drama to either Coffee Prince or Boys Before Flowers. I know I just did it twice in my previous post but I really do try to stay away from that. One, it's not fair, and two, what's the point? I guess it's unavoidable since this is a crossdressing drama featuring a bunch of flower boys but it still irks me and I'll try not to do it again.

Like everybody else here, I'm already struck by the You're Beautiful syndrome.

The Hong Sisters are definitely back this time, and even better than before (I'm referring to Fantasy Couple and Hong Gil Dong).

What I like about the Hong Sisters is that they always always choose the right and (perfect?) cast for their characters in their dramas. I can't pin-point a single role in their projects that I thought could have done better than the original ones. That's the magic of the sisters I must say.

Back to Ep 2, I didn't think it was overly hilarious or anything. But it definitely stepped up a lot from the pilot. The pacing was really good, and we already have Tae Kyung and Shin Woo finding out that she's a girl. Does it remind me of Coffee Prince anymore? Nah.

Is it only me or does anybody think Tae Kyung's actually a softie at heart? I think he's just putting up a cool and distant upfront because of his mother...The acor JGS is just look-pitch perfect for Tae Kyung. Aside from his greasy hairstyle (which I'm starting to get used to now), he FITS his character to a TEE - from tip to toe. <333 And man his voice, sexy much?

Shin Woo's okay. I think I must be the only one who isn't attracted to him. I guess it's just that stoic and nice-all guys in K-dramas bore me. But I definitely agree that he's better and more expressive than KHJ in BOF (since they give off a similar vibe and so), which is such a HUGE relief. Phew...

I'm now curious as to whether TK and SW would tell each other that they've found out about MN's gender soon. It'd be hella funny (well, probably angst-y as well) to see TK and SW fight it out for a "guy"... hehehe..

My thoughts exactly! I completed in love it that she's been found out episode 2!
And it's been awhile where I feel like everyone's been so well cast for a drama. I was thinking after ep1 that it would be just a nice little fun thing to watch but the unexpected storyline in ep2, my expectations have gone way up. Definitely looking forward to next week.

Thanks javabeans, this is a really cute series.

JGS is finally cast in the perfect role. I always felt he wasn't at his best before, but this role suits him to a T. Don't you think his hairstyle is reminiscent of his role as the Prince in Hong Gil Dong?

I think it's because the second guy is always treats the heroine a lot better I feel like.

omg i thought the exact same thing about Shin Woo being Rui - seriously too similar, sort of. I'm still rooting for the hero so far though, cos he's got appeal :) at first i wasn't sure is this means Shin Woo has figured that he's a she, but since you've stated this aloud it must be then!

thanks for the recap JB, i wouldn't have started watching if i didn't read your ep 1 recap! ;D
