Lee Byung-heon won’t star in IRIS sequel

With ratings topping 30% and commanding a lot of attention thanks to its blockbuster budget and high-profile cast, KBS’s spy drama IRIS had announced a high possibility that a second season would be produced. On November 30, CEO Jung Tae-won of production house Taewon Entertainment confirmed the sequel, saying, “Casting will take place after the director has been decided, but we have decided to produce a Season 2 of IRIS.” However, because its cast is composed of top names with busy schedules, the likelihood of their returns is in question, and star Lee Byung-heon will not be the second season’s hero.

CEO Jung went on to explain, “It’s difficult to talk of concrete filming schedules, but from the start of IRIS‘s planning, we were thinking to make a Season 2, similar to American dramas Prison Break or CSI. Since we haven’t yet given thought to broadcast stations, the title may even change. From the start, the most important consideration was deciding whether we would start fresh with a new cast and story, or whether we would continue with the plot of Season 1. However, because the first season is busily filming, it has been difficult to finalize a decision.”

Regarding the casting of the current season’s actors, Jung said, “We are in discussions regarding several different possible directions. However, Lee Byung-heon will be busy next year filming the sequel to the Hollywood film G.I.Joe, so he will probably not be able to film IRIS Season 2. Right now, we’re anticipating that he may make a special appearance in the first episode.”

The production team has secured a filming set location for the next two years, and they are discussing with the current writers the possible themes of the second season. They will film winter scenes next summer in New Zealand and Australia, and head to Italy for additional location shoots. Japan and China are also on the list of intended foreign locales.

Meanwhile, IRIS is currently holding strong on Wednesdays and Tuesdays and will wrap in three weeks. Yesterday (November 29), filming took place in the Seoul streets, blocking traffic and drawing crowds of spectators as explosions lit the sky and its lead actors raced around shooting guns.

@Lil, definitely! I started with IRIS though, and only watched parts of You're Beautiful due to time constraints, and read all the recaps and spoilers on Dramabeans and Soompi for the rest. I'm loving IRIS though - it has all the things that You're Beautiful doesn't, like action, explosions, and a bit of melodrama, and You're Beautiful on the other hand has what IRIS doesn't - light, comedic moments and playfulness between the characters that we don't see anymore in IRIS.

Ah yes. The timing of the episodes are conflating in my head but my sequence error still doesn't undermine my point that he should have gotten out of Akita. As a professional spy its naive to think he could stay undetected for long.

Also my criticism of IRIS is independent of YB. They are very different dramas and not worth comparing against each other. I'm just a highly critical person when it comes to practically anything. Movies, food, art and yes kdramas so if a drama fails to sustain the drama-reality it is suppose to create for the viewer I get nitpicky about the plot, acting and production value.

@ Lil:

I started off with that thought...that I will not watch IRIS because of YB and also because I don't feel attracted to Spy themes (that's true, and independant of YB). But I got bored one day and tried to watch IRIS...and failed terribly. I tried watching 2 episodes, but I just didn't get hooked. And when I don't get hooked after 2 eps, I usually just give up the whole drama. Now, that is totally independatn of YB!

Aniwaes, IRIS is ending so fast! I had thought that given the high ratings it'[ll be a rather long drama...but well, it's getting a Season 2 so...makes little difference!

He can't act. Sure he can pose there looking all that badass but when he opens his mouth and say his line. Damn he can't act.

OMG who cares if LBH doesn't do season 2 of IRIS the show is awful anyway. It's a copy of the series 24 in America. I gave up watching it after a couple of episodes. G.I Joe what a waste of time, that was a big flop overseas.

And as for Kim Tae Hee yuck!!! I don't like her looks she is cold and plastic and she cannot act. I disliked her from stairway the heaven. where as Song Hye Kyo (my all time favorite) is cute and cuddly I think she is too adorable. I love her.. good luck with your next project.

I haven't started on IRIS yet but the files are already sitting in my PC. Not that I'm less interested - all the ajusshi actors are my favs (LBH, KSW, JJH). I just want to start watching after the drama finishes so I can watch it marathon style.

I don't think Season 2 is good idea, though. Unless it's like what belleza suggested (LOL at A Full House to Kill)

Iris is the great drama with interesting acting of actors & actresses, especially great acting of Kim Tae Hee.

I am sick of Song Hye Kyo, especially after I saw her photos before plastic surgery (photos on internet). Photos showed Song Hye Kyo was very ugly before plastic surgery. Story of Song Hye Kyo's plastic surgery & photos on internet are true ?

I do not care about main actor, I just need Ms Kim (KTH) as main actress in drama.
I love her style & acting.

I prefer LBH, anyway, other actor will also be fine. I want Kim Tae Hee continue the sequel. I love her beauty & acting since I have seen her dramas "Love story in Harvard" & "Forbidden love = Nine fox tale" in 2005.

Relax about the plot. It is good enough for mere entertainment.

The most flimsy part was when the North Korean stole the liquid plutonium from NSS. The real weapon grade plutonium is silvery colour and not green colour and it needs a good few more tonnes to distroy the capital of South Korea. If it it is only one "green tube", it is called dirty bomb and not nuclear bomb!! The impact it creates is mere fear and panic to the public. ^^

Since South Korean has signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, with the undeclared material, it has breached the international treaty, and it will definitely get economic sanctions from the UN Security Council. Unless, the President is as brave as Iranian Mahmoud Ahmadinejad or Saddam Hussein, it is of his interest to declare the hidden nuclear materials.

I guess, also before having the Security Council laying down any sanctions, the CIA, M16, IAEA and INTERPOL would have already at the background finding out more evidence about the "green tube". Where on earth would these idiots - both north and south spies could still wondering undetected and having IRIS still working underground for more than 20 years?

The other question is that how does South Korea get the "green tube", is it through its own enrichment of uranium and plutonium or it bought it from a third party? If it is its own enrichment, there must be a plant to carry out such enrichment and it can be easily detected through satellite images. If it bought it from a third party, from which countries and did it assembles the "green tube" itself?

Also, it seems rather strange that the Director of NSS appears now a subordinate of his Deputy Director. Is it some sort of a joke? Also, the Deputy Director reports directly to the President. Since NSS is a sub-branch of the Special Intelligence of South Korea, I wonder where are the Chief of Special Intelligence, the Commisioner of Police or Army Chief, wouldn't the President could tap on their intelligence and their expertise? It really amaze me to see how stupid a President can be? Who elected him at the first place? ^________^

The sequel of Iris must have the interesting story. Good story is more important than main actor. LBH is prefered although other great actor is still ok. I always love Kim Tae Hee for main actress.

YAB will gain extremely high ratings if it is not competing with IRIS. How come IRIS can get a season 2?? WE YAB addicts really, really want a season 2 and we will never give up hoping.

hmm...do u guys think an online petition might get YAB a 2nd season too?

actually, all they need to do is go on websites such as this one and see all of the comments regarding viewers having YAB withdrawl symptoms and that should be good enough to seal(sp?) the deal.

"You are beautiful" is suitable for some teenages.

I love IRIS. From all of Korean dramas so far, I like only IRIS, love story in Hardvard, Forbidden love. "Jumong" will be more attractive if main actress is as beautiful, impressive as Kim Tae Hee.

I really like IRIS because of its however if they think of producing another sequel, without the most favored stars, definitely it will be an utter failure...
