Smile: Episode 18

Love is in the air! To prove it, Hyun-soo will kiss Jung-in… if it kills him. Haha! So as not to give away any spoilers, let’s just say that he makes a lot of kissy faces in this episode.

The relationship between Jung-in and Hyun-soo develops very quickly and sweetly because of their heart-on-your-sleeve honesty… and thankfully there’s lots of cringeworthy hilarity to keep it from getting too saccharine!

SONG OF THE DAY

Norah Jones – “Those Sweet Words.” I couldn’t get this song out of my head while writing this recap. It seemed so apt for the heartfelt moments between Hyun-soo and Jung-in… plus, Norah Jones’s voice is liquid love. [ Download ]

  1. Wow! Thanks so much!

  2. I’m totally in love with this couple. They’re adorable together.

  3. Loving this drama more and more. Thanks for the recaps soyjoy. :)

  4. I’ve waited 3day just for it! Thanx very much. I’m ur big fan!

  5. You guy’s totally rock the house, thanks again for your hard work, happy thanks giving from Salem OR,,, :o )

  6. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
    Wonderful recap.

  7. Good recaps soyjoy ^^ keep up ur good work, girl!!! it made me laugh so hard ^^

  8. Although I really enjoyed all the sweet and funny moments between HS and JI, I have to admit what had me cracking up was when Hanse let out that primal scream of frustration and when he woke up in bed with the dad. I am sorry but I love these two. They make me laugh so much. The dad doesn’t have to say anything. Just the sight of him makes me laugh.

  9. I think this was the cutest episode so far. When they met up outside the bathroom I had butterflies in my stomach. I love this couple!

    Great recap, thanks!!

  10. Awesome recap, as usual. Thank you! And have a great Thanksgiving weekend everyone! =)

Btw, that did sound like LMJ’s real laugh- which just made the scene funnier and more endearing than usual. ^_^

  11. i love the bathroom scene when hanse comes in while hyunsoo’s brushing and just pulls out his own toothbrush. LOL!

jung kyung ho is just too amazing as hyun soo. i love that the character is a genuine guy with just enough inexperience to make him believable and absolutely adorable. that elevator scene was brilliant! i def. think that’s real laughter coming from LMJ. i think i’d break in that scene if i was the actress. then of course, the last scene–who DIDN’T melt? =p

as for hanse, i hope he continues being a likable antagonist. those are always fun to watch because you can’t hate the bastard even though you should.

    fantastic episode!!

  12. OMG… its so cuttte!!! i’ve been waiting for ur recaps for the past few days… didnt know when u were gonna post it so i was refreshing loike CRAZY!!!!
Thanks so much 4 the recaps!!!

  13. Thank you soooo much for the recaps….the website that subs this drama has been going through technical problems and I’ve watched the raw version dying to know what they’re saying, especially in the last scene….whew, it looks better than a kiss!!!!

Again and again, thanks a lot for the recaps and keep up the good work, fighting ^^

  14. I wish they would put up NGs especially for the elevator scene. I think I’d break an internal organ from laughing so hard. lol

  15. soyjoy and dw4p, YOU TWO ARE AWESOME!!!! thank you!!

  16. This is my drama crack for the year! I’ve been enjoying it from the very first episode and love that its still going strong. Its got heart and humor and i can’t get enough!

  17. <33

Curious question…are you guys watching the raw episodes or the Chinese subbed ones?

  18. Hyun-Soo emotes through his face/eyes so well, You can feel the love he has for Jung-In when he is holding her at the end. Man, I need a guy like that. Not afraid to be honest with his heart:)

  19. Ahh! I have a lot of love for this series and its characters. This episode was freaking funny. Hyun-soo’s ‘macho fail’ moments were adorkable. Poor Geum-ja…it’s like her worst nightmare has come true in that last scene.

I agree the soundtrack is not up to par with the caliber of the script and acting, but I guess it could be worse *cough*BOF*cough*.

Thanks for the wonderful recap SoyJoy!

  20. i think i love this show too much. -_- must. relieve. myself. from. sooin. love. overload.

  21. It’s way more fun knowing what’s going on as opposed to guessing through the RAWs. My guesses haven’t been too far off but reading the recaps brings the cute ness back even more:)
I like reading your commentary even more because it’s so spot on with what I think of this series.
    Thanks so much!

  22. Thank you so much for the recaps!
I have to say, Hanse and JungKil are perfect together, they really should be in-laws!
HyunSoo is so adorable, he and JungIn complement each other so well. It seems that what one is lacking the other has–him, being inexperienced in love, she, being inexperienced as at work. I like that they accept each other as they are and don’t require/expect the other to change, and I also like how they are never embarrassed of each other.
Actually, this series is taking embarrassment to a new level. Especially with Hanse and JungKil, they should be so embarrassed by how they are/act, but they are not, it’s totally normal for them and they keep their dignity/pride. Even SungJoon, the way he acts towards Jisoo is so embarrassing and yet it’s likeable.
I hope since this series has been extended we will get a glimpse of JungIn as a daughter-in-law!
Thanks so much again for the recaps, as others have said, they were much needed!
    Happy Thanksgiving weekend!

  23. Nice recap!

Soyjoy – Totally agree with you on the music. I really enjoy the silence in the series, but would be nice to have some better music integrated into the series.

@WideSmiler: I absolutely loved the toothbrush scene. I spit out my food when I saw Han-se pull out the toothbrush. And then Hyun-soo going in and brushing his teeth for the 2nd time.. so funny.

Lee Kyu Han was pretty awesome in this episode. I figured he would be doing the MNIKSS ex again, but he’s so much funnier and likable as a goofy Han-se. The poop scream!! Hahaha!

  24. Thanks again for the recaps! Truly enjoyed this episode.

  25. I think the reason Han-se is a is such a good second lead is that he is harmless. Usually, when the Decoy Guy is a Cheabol or the boss, there is always the threat that he’s gonna cause serious harm to our hero… blackmail, firing, etc. But, we’ve already established that Han-se isn’t allowed to mess with Hyun-soo or his project. On top of that, he’s too much of a doofus to be a romantic threat; you can literally see Jung-In thinking “what did I ever see in you?” every time she’s around him. To top it all off, his only ally is the equally bumbling Jung-kil! I’m happy to say, there is no hope for the guy. So, we are free to enjoy his shenanigans without worrying about him causing any real damage. And, he’s just evil enough that we don’t have to be afraid of falling for him either! I love it!

  26. thanks you so much soyjoy! this is such a treat. I wasn’t expecting the recaps to come out so soon. :)
SooIn is just so sweet! I was smiling (and laughing) while watching this episode. It’s crazy how just thinking about them makes me smile. I feel like I’ve caught a Smile virus! lol

  27. True story : You know that you have it bad when you are in an elevator, go to push the button for your floor, see the emergency call button and get the giggles. Needless to say the other people in the elevator with me thought that I was insane. They may just be right. The looks that I got! Lol!

  28. Oops I forgot to say thank you!

  29. Really loved this episode! They were all awesome. Sung-joon was funny but Han-se was hilarious. I laughed so hard at that elevator scene.

If Jung-kyung moved in with Ji-soo, Sung-joon has now a legitimate reason to visit his dongsaeng(not that it matter)…lol. Poor Ji-soo!

I love how Hyun-soo allays Jung-In’s insecurity by telling her that as her boyfriend he has expected to hear such and that its ok with him.

    Thanks Soyjoy and Dw4p!

  30. thanks so much for this! [viikii's still down so I didn't understand the raw I watched].

we’re still at epi18—it’s still a long way to go. i just hope the angst don’t set off after all the lovey dovey we’re getting : )

  31. tooooo freaking cute. all these dramas are making me want to ditch out on studying.

  32. trixicopper: Hahaha! You elevator recount made me smile! Yes, we seem to all have the incurable Smiler Effect virus.

@Z: Well said. I completely agree about your analysis over HSe’s likeabilty to Smilers. I’ve liked him from the beginning and he gets funnier every ep.

Thanks Soyjoy for the once again amazing recap. I also concur about the music – I think more diversity in music selection would be nice. However, I prefer silence and subtly over flamboyancy and distracting – so I’m fine with the score, for now.

    Happy Thanksgiving Smilers!

  33. Thank you. Great Recap.

too cute the bathroom scene and when Hyun-soo practiced kissing. The elevator scene was hilarious. lol

I’m glad that Geum-ja walk in on them because I hope they won’t drag out the secret dating too long.

  34. I’m glad they are not going to drag out the secret dating but this means they are probably going to drag out the Parental Disapproval Angst. No fun at all! Can’t they just get married this weekend so we can spend the next 26 episodes watching everyone live happily ever after?

  35. Loved the recap! Thank you. This show is so much fun to watch.

  36. @ trixicopper: LOL

@ Kgrl: so that’s the technical term for it, Smiler Effect virus. lol. It’s very contagious too since I’ve seen a sudden influx of comments in the recaps. hehe

  37. Thank you so much for the recap, Soyjoy! Made my first foray into trying to watching an episode without subtitles. It was pretty interesting how much came across and how much just didn’t. Arguments and explanations require translation, but some things like the elevator scene require no words at all. I nearly died laughing!

This is the first cliffhanger ending that ends on a more traditional “duh-duh-DUH” moment. We’ve been getting a lot of “positive” cliffhangers, in other words, cliffhangers that cut off right before the squee moment. I did get that Geum-Ja thought that Jung-in should get back together with Han-soo and, of course, it was easy to get what was going on when Geum-ja walked in at the end. (It was actually pretty predictable!) But that was before I understood what Han-soo and Jung-in were talking about before they were interrupted and how he was encouraging her to stand up to his mother.

Now, I’m in the same position with the end of this episode as I was at the end of episode 14 of You Are Beautiful. You know exactly what would happen next in most K-dramas (BIG estrangement in YAB & on Smile there’d be lying about what Geum-Ja saw, more sneaking around and maybe even a bigger argument between Jung-in & Han-soo because she wasn’t braver), but because of the quality and nature of the shows, you can’t help hoping that something very different will play out.

Please, oh please, Jung-in! Stand your ground and fight for your guy!!

  38. @ trixicopper: hahaha. i think your comment’s going to make me do that too now. hehe

  39. Wow, you caught up quickly! Thanks so much for the great recap. I don’t want to wait until Saturday for the next one…

  40. @ 11 wideSmiler

i love the bathroom scene when hanse comes in while hyunsoo’s brushing and just pulls out his own toothbrush. LOL!

Interestingly, that didn’t strike me as that odd! When I was in Korea, two of my coworkers used to go to the bathroom together every day after lunch and brush their teeth together. At the time I thought it was hilarious, but I guess I got so used to it that when I saw this episode I didn’t even think twice about it! I just assumed it’s a Korean thing, since Korean food does tend to smell.

    @ 25 Z

Great assessment of Han-se! He’s like a gnat–it can’t do anything to you, and yet you can’t seem to get it to buzz off either. Haha. Lee Kyu-han is definitely carrying this role well.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! It’s odd, it feels like the weekend since there’s no work tomorrow, and yet–no Smile? What to do?? ;)

  41. Thanks for the amazing recap!

I’ve watched episode 17&18 twice raw w/o subs.
I’ll be watching them again once Viikii finishes the subs.

Love how Hyun Soo calls Jung In “kegguri”with a smile…tooo cute.
Almost died laughing because of the elevator scene.
When Jung In cries, my tears come out…LMJ is doing an amazing job.
I am so happy they got caught in the end by Guem Ja.

In true Smile, You fashion, I hope they admit the relationship and inspite of the obvious family objections stand by each other.

I felt so bad for Jung In the sassy, vocal heroine being so subdued by Guem Ja’s snarky remarks. Once their relationship is out in the open they can fight for each other and defend each other as well.

  42. @ wideSmiler: I came here to comment on that scene too. I thought I couldn’t laugh more in the episode and then Han-se pulls out a brush from his coat. I think because he stored it in his coat is why I started to laugh. How long has that been there? Not to mention his face going from “What is Hyun-Soo doing to my wall” to “NO! There will be no making out in my office!”

Which leads me to believe Han-se never even got a kiss from Jung-In??? Cause he would totally throw it in Hyun-Soos face.

I love your caps of Sung-Joons “I know what you’re up to” face and Han-ses “Touche” face. Spot on freeze frames!

Please give the Smile, You cast a toothpaste commercial, Korea. :D

  43. Viikii.com has been having software problems so all dramas aren’t subbed and some are left hanging with the last episodes. I’m already “Smile, You’ deprived last weekend.

  44. whoahhhhhh very nice……I love this series……….so excited for the coming episodes……So sweet the couple……

  45. thanks, dramabeans! u sure are great in feeding us our addiction!!!

I was getting all frustrated with the absence of Viikii that i turned to Ja Myung Go and did a marathon despite the fact that saeguks do not really interest me so much. I just had to fill the ‘void’ of viikii subs…kekeke… this guy is just awesome! I’ve seen him in I’m sorry, I love you… and even though his character annoyed the heck out of me, I found him interesting and [of course!] cute. Then on to time between dog and wolf… then smile, you and even Ja Myung Go [yes, i finished ALL 39 eps in one day.

    but the pull of Mr. Jung Kyung Ho is pretty strong… *sigh* … hamana, hamana… [tongue-rolling out like red carpet}

  46. thanks for the recap ! I laughed so hard when Jung-In and Hyun-Soo were in the lift..
It was funny to see Han-Se brushing his teeth with Hyun-Soo. Does the guy always carry a toothbrush? I found it weird he had a toothbrush but no toothpaste. I enjoyed this episode and I’m really looking forward to the weekend to see what ahjumma will do

  47. thanks so soyjoy and dw4p much for the recaps – they’re brilliant!

is everyone having problems loading viikii? I cannot even open the website, keeps giving me an error that the link is broken. that’s too bad, hope it gets fixed soon!

  48. i agree with you.

Personally, i was not really interest in this drama. I was afraid they would drag the story with lots of boring events and over dose drama, but the plot is slowly developing… making me wanna watch more even if i read the recap. It is not intriguing, but REALLY lovable to watch. I’m really afraid of the 46 episodes, but somewhat i have faith that the story will get better after every episode. Not in a suspense manner, but more to see the development between every single characters.

And somehow, i love how Hyun-soo is innocent and dorky. Look more realistic than drama where the main characters has all the prince-like qualities. He looks more realistic to me apart from his handsome-ness. kekeke. He’s my favorite!

And i have become fond of Han-Se a lot even though he is supposed to be the bad guy. Well, he is mean cause he still love Jung In. Who wouldn’t want to get his ex wife back especially when the marriage was call off because of the parents and some major money issue.

As for Jung In, i find her genuine too. Her acting has gotten better. She’s not the best, but i find that she understood her character well…making her as she is in the drama.

    LOVE the family quarrel ahahah!

Anyhow, thanks a lot for your recap! I’ll be reading until i finish my exams…cause it is faster to read than to watch :P

    BANZAI!

  49. Another lovely episode and recap! Thanks so much and Happy Early Turkey Day!

    Gobble Gobble ;)

  50. Great recap! like so many of the others i’ve been waiting like a madman :)

    hehe Thanks again Soyjoy!

  51. Love the older brother, Sung Joon. He is so goofy but caring and his glances are so hilarious!
Hyun Soo reminds me of a guy you would meet at church. Such a nice guy, caring and thoughtful.
… But his mom’s voice is really starting to annoy me…

  52. Lee Kyu-han has always been awesome with the comedic timing, if I remember his fist fight with Hyun Bin in “Kim Samsoon” right. One of the funniest kdrama scenes ever. When he is standing there soaked and starts wringing out the bottom of his jacket with all the dignity he can muster and, yet, a big pout on his face, I giggle my head off every time..

  53. Thank you for the recap! I loved a lot of the Hyun-soo/Jung-in movements in this episode. from the elevator scene (HILARIOUS) to the ending scene, where he’s just holding her (too cute!). I cannot wait to see what happens in the next episode and how Geum-ja reacts and how they either tell the truth or pretend nothing happened.

  54. Thank you your the recaps while I wait on subtitles. I wasn’t the least bit interested in this drama at first until I keep coming across your recaps while checking up on YAB. I am so glad I gave it a chance because it’ll be just what I need to cure my YAB withdrawals when that ends tomorrow :(

  55. too many laugh out loud moments… too many cute scenes… and only 2 days left before we all Smile again :) thanks soyjoy for the recap!

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

  56. I always have to comment on how thoroughly I enjoy both your recaps of Smile, You, soyjoy and dw4p, and this time was no exception! I literally bust a gut laughing at the elevator scene since HS was acting so macho – but completely screwed up by pressing the intercom! And yes, Hanse is getting more adorable by the episode (if only he hadn’t dumped JI by the road in Ep1…)

Anyway, Ep 18 moved a bit quicker than I thought it would! Didn’t expect GJ to bust HS & JI so quickly (or so it hints at, at the end) for their coupledom, so I’m looking forward to seeing how the scriptwriters move this on. Rather wish they would also show more Jisoo and Sangjoon scenes since the two together are also hilarious.

  57. thank you for the recap

after youre beautiful this is the second best for this month to watch and wanting for more and more and that its to long too wait for the next episode

thanks for recap dont understand korean saw in raw because couldnt wait for english sub

  58. thanks so much soyjoy! fantabulous recaps!
i am just SO SO IN LOVE with this series from the first episode, it gave me laughter and also allowed me to experience fuzzy-wuzzy lovey-dovey feelings, in fact it did a bit more than Coffee Prince. i actually agree with soyjoy, i was reflecting at around episode 9, that this series deserves better soundtracks, not that the music isn’t great, just could be better [yup, i too am referring back to how great the soundtracks were on Coffee Prince].
Lee Min Jung and Jung Kyung Ho are amazing actors and i find the chemistry between the both of them to be so real that at times i forget that i am just watching a drama.
Isn’t Hyun Soo almost everyone’s dream guy? :D

  59. soyjoy, thank u so so so much for the recaps..
i just finished watching eps 18 and still smiling n giggling like crazy.hehehe..
this episode was awesome though i really dont like how geum-ja treats jung-in..
i dont know..but i always think geum-ja likes (or at least not hating) jung-in so watching how she treats jung-in in this episode was a bit shocking to me..
    but maybe its just me..
anyway i cant wait to watch the next one..hope saturday comes fast..^^

  60. trixicopper: LOL

Wait isn’t today sat? lol No!!! (how do I make a wink face)

    Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

  61. Sigh… there is no thanksgiving in France…
The drama seems so good, actually this is the first time I READ a drama and it does work XD !! I like how you describe it with all the details… So much that I read the dramas I have previously watched a long time ago… Thank you so much for your recaps ^^ !!!

  62. love this drama it the best that i seen so far this year

  63. Episode 18 was a lot of fun! I truly enjoyed watching it with and without subs. Yeah, I’ve got it really bad! LOL. Now I won’t be able to ride in an elevator without giggling to myself remembering the scene when Hyun Soo tried to kiss Jung In but pressed the Emergency Call button and did I say OMG! The cliffhanger totally immobilized me. Can’t wait for the next episode tomorrow. Thank goodness it’s Friday!

  64. @sooin43v3r
I totally agree. This is one of the few dramas I actually follow nowadays. It doesn’t use outlandish plot devices or lines to draw in it’s audience, just quirky every day humor that brings back the warmth of home and love.

Thank you so much for the recap and the comments!

I really like how the writers are preventing Hyun Soo and Jung In from kissing in their honey moon stage with all these awkward attempts. It just adds to the quirky reality of this relationship that they’ve set up for this couple.

  65. Yusss… finally finished watching episode 18!!! totally awesome hehehe I love all the little things – not just the big bits like when he tries to kiss her and stuff, but all the little looks and stuff they give each other – so sweet! GarabaruwhgbouewjknCUTE OVERLOAD, ACTIVATE EMGERENCY SQUEEEE!!

  66. i love this episode. you’re right, han se is really getting funnier. i hope by the end of the drama, he grows a spine, stands up to his mom and find a girl that will be his match. thank you for the recap!

  67. I finally finished this episode! Best episode yet in my opinion! Yet I say that about every episode…Oh my goodness the elevator scene! That scene is going to stay classic. When we talk about Smile,You in the future we’re gonna say “Remember that elevator scene…?”. I also love the scene in the beginning when HyunSoo was trying to kiss JungIn but she hugs him instead and he gives out a laugh. For some reason, I thought his reaction was very believable. It doesn’t seem forced, which again solidifies the chemistry between the two leads.

I am loving every minute of this series, more so now than Queen Seon Deok, which is very high up there in my opinion, and it’s a better romantic drama in my opinion than You’re Beautiful *gets smacked*. The chemistry is far better and I love that the main couple gets together pretty early on whereas you can’t even get some type of admittance of attraction from other characters until very late into the story (or in most cases the last episode).

And it doesn’t drag (well, at least not yet). Even HanSe, god bless him, is such a joy to watch. He brilliantly pulls off the weird jealous ex that everyone is suppose to hate but can’t. Stay awkward Lee HanSe!

  68. I Just can’t stand how Geum Ja treats Jung-In, it’s just harsh treatment!!!!

  69. I love how Kang Hyun Soo’s father is so understanding of Jung in’s feelings, that’s definitely someone to respect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GEUM JA YOU SURE COULD USE A FEW LESSONS FROM YOUR HUSBAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rant and/or Rave
