Smile extended to 46 episodes
With its ratings approaching 20%, Smile’s run has been extended by 16 episodes from its original 30. It will air 46 episodes and wrap at the end of February.
An article announcing the extension attributes the steadily increasing ratings and popularity of Smile to its ability to provide comic relief among the many “makjang” dramas that are currently on the air. Makjang dramas such as Angel’s Temptation, which is currently airing, use sensationalist, over-the-top storylines to hook viewers—a far cry from the realistic, homey charm of Smile. The burgeoning feelings between Jung-in and Hyun-soo, as well as the comic family scenes, have given viewers “wholesome” laughs.
The series’ writer Moon Hee Jung, whose last work was on Last Scandal, has done an exceptional job so far. The plot has taken longer to develop in this series than in a 16- or 20-episode series, but there have been plenty of giggle-worthy moments to keep the pacing tight.
And there are quite a few leads that have been hinted at, but have yet to be fleshed out—ownership of the Seo house; Han-se vs. Hyun-soo; Sung-joon and Ji-soo; Ji-soo’s backstory; even Jung-in’s backstory, which we still know very little about; among others. I’ve also got a soft spot for Kyung-soo and hope he gets a chance to shine. Hopefully this gives the drama plenty of material to work through in the remaining 30 episodes, without getting draggy or detracting from its main draw, the relationship between Jung-in and Hyun-soo.
Plus, I’m an optimist at heart, so I’ve got my fingers crossed that Smile will be able to keep up its momentum–the laughs, character development and romantic tension–without having to revert to maudlin/angsty plot twists. Angst has its place, but Jung-in and Hyun-soo are such refreshing characters that I’d hate to see them fall prey to cliche!

OMG! Such great news early in the morning – Love the drama to bits! Must have watched each episode at least 4X , first without subs, then 30% sub so on and on…Thanks all subbers!
I think both main leads have done exceptional job in this drama. I love their relationship in this one. Creating destiny tries to build up similar kind of bickering couple but it seems not work smoothly like in this drama. But from 30 eps to 46 eps, just wonder how much they will drag the storyline… The space is fine now…
Omo omo omo!!!
This story has just made my day!!!!!! FINALLY something to look forward to because I am slowly falling into the great depression because YAB is nearing its final curtain call.
Yay!!!!!!
Ugh wow, 50 episodes. I don’t have the energy for that!
I love this drama but I rather they did not extend it. Every time they extend a drama it starts to run out of steam midway, jmo.
wow that’s good…love 2 hear that…..thks….4 ur infor….
I agree the drama is great but if they extend it they just drag the storyline and it becomes boring. 30 would have been just right . I like dramas to have between 16 to 24 episodes max after they just dragggg
I hope too that it won’t get draggy…. I really love this drama… ^^
WOW! 16 episodes is a huge extension! At least they’ve got plenty of time to add the episodes…
I read about this earlier in the Soompi thread and really my thought is this could very well be a double edged sword. Of course it’s great if the story holds on but such a big extension might signal excessive plot dragging. I don’t mind being clear and frank that the biggest reason I’m watching this so fervently is because of Hyun-soo and Jung-in (and now a bit of Han-se…oh admit it..he’s getting hilarious!) If the extension means more air time for the older generation and such, then I can’t say I’m going to be too interested.
Let’s just hope things stay tight and awesome until February!
Best News ever! With all the 30 episodes, no its actually 50 episodes discussions we’ve had, I was leaning more towards 50. I love, love, love Smile You. I feel nice and warm and giggly when Jung-In and Hyun-Soo are together. Episode 16 blew my mind!!!!!!!!! It is so AWESOME. I watched the final scene 5 times because it made me squeel so much. There is nothing special or convoluted or angsty about it. Just Hyun-Soo and Jung-In smiling…awwwww their realtionship is so real, I just love it. it reminds me of the leads in 9E2O, very natural.
Thank You, to Soyjoy and DW4P for doing the recaps. You are doing an amazing job.
I am excited because there will be more Hyun-soo & Jung-in. But I’m worried that it might get draggy later on. Though, I’ve been impressed by the consistent pacing in the last couple of episodes and hope that it can till the end of the series. Also, I did think with the multiple story lines, that 30 might have been too short.
After today’s episode YAB and the preview for the next episode—I can’t take it anymore. There is a limit on illogical and there’s also a limit on how much you can drag out a plot line/certain characters’ roles. It’s still cute and wonderful, but I’m at my wits’ end! In contrast, I’ve been finding Smile, You so refreshing. The love story moves forward in a logical, realistic way and it’s avoiding (so far) the typical melodrama cliches. I know some will arise eventually, but so far the relationships and how they unfold is the main draw (especially Soo-in couple!). For a character who generally would be a second lead in a typical kdrama, Hyun-soo is very open about his feelings but he knows when to move on even though it’s hard. And even the (supposedly evil, manipulating second lead) Lee Han-se, provides comical relief and moves along the story without us being too annoyed. Smile, You has become my number one kdrama for this season. So definitely more yay than nay for the extension.
I share the skepticism as other about the 46 episodes, but the series was earlier posted as 50 episodes, so the writers may have been preparing for 50 eps all along. At its current pace, Jung-in and Hyun-soo will be married with kids when the drama ends… haha. That’s just wishful thinking.
It would be apropos to end with their wedding, no? And Jung-in can wear a ripped up wedding gown to symbolize the good luck it brought her the first time around.
And episode 15-16 recap is coming soon! @GG I watched the end a few times also! LOVED IT!
Soyjoy – thanks for sharing the news with us!!
omo!!! i just hope they don’t drag & stretch the story out so thinly that i’ll stop watching… i thought that 30 episodes would be enough but i guess SBS thought differently…
but yay more of sooin couple!!! my main reason of watching this show is to see how the story about this adorable couple unfolds… i hope we get to see them get married and seeing them with kids would be such an extra bonus!!!
Whoa…46 episodes? That’s a lot. I started watching SMILE a couple of days ago and I think it’s funny. However, I think the extra 16 episodes is stretching it way too far.
I’m happy that the show is enjoying healthy ratings and gaining more attention. I really really hope that this is the break that Jung Kyung Ho needs. He’s such an underrated actor who really has a knack for comedy. Also, it’s a fun family show and Jung-in and Hyun-soo’s relationship is a breath of fresh air. Having said that, the show didn’t quite pick up until episode 6 and the extension is not a small one, not by 4 episodes but 16. While there are definitely a lot of stories that can still be covered, I’m afraid that they’ll drag out the Han-se vs. Hyun-soo and Jung-in vs. Jung-Kyung storylines for ratings sake. This will probably also mean more of Jung-kil’s selfish and immature antics. However the optimist in me hopes they use the 16 episodes wisely and develop the rest of the Seo family into likeable relatable people.
When I first heard the news a bubble of happiness rose up – more eps = more SooIn aka Jung-Ho. However, experience has concluded that extensions rarely add value to a K production, so I do have concerns.
I never expected this drama to be as good as it is, and the pairing? SooIn is going down in my list (which is really short compared to the way-too-many Kdramas I’ve watched) as one of the best pairings I’ve seen. Even if the drama does end up dragging, I don’t think it will affect the amazing chemistry of SooIn. lols. It’s not like it’ll the first time I adored a pairing, but found the drama itself mediocre.
Also being an optimist, I hope soyjoy your right, and that Writer Moon had enough material for a 50 ep drama to begin with and is just slowly ironing out the details. Hope SY production continues with it’s creativity and refreshing character protrayals. Smilers, fighting!
YESSSSSSS!!!!
yay yay yay yay!!!!!!
^_^ i am so super excited!! when i realized that we were more than half way done (when it was slated to end with 30 episodes), i got so sad that i had only so many episodes left.
i just hope the writer does us (the viewers) justice by keeping the story as entertaining as it has been thus far!!
here’s to hoping for the best for Smile, You!!
this is slightly good news for me since i thought it was supposed to be 50. but now, it’s 4 episodes shorter! yay!…sort of…. ^ ^
it’s been 16 episodes and the story seems to have just begun for our favorite couple so i have hope in this drama. oh! there’s more to jungin’s backstory to come? i’m excited about that!
WTh man….why do they always do that.. Making the series longer does not mean it’s better. IT gets draggy and looses “it” factor. rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr how annoying with these tv stations
It is not an exciting drama, Oh my !! it is going to be a drag.
Woo hoo!! ~~
yay!! that made my day..just love the character developments..
i love the drama and SooIn but I have mixed emotions about this news. happy ‘coz more SooIn but…
i guess there are more stories to cover that’s why it got extended. i’ll try to be optimistic about this
btw, thanks soyjoy and dw4p! you guys are doing a wonderful job recapping this drama. ‘looking forward to your next recap
Awesome…more Hyun-soo & Jung-in to see..I am so hook on this drama..So refreshing, funny, and cute all in one…its official my drug now..hahahahha
Great News! I also thought it was 50 episodes, so 46 is okay with me! Love all the characters, the writing, everything! Keep up the good work Smile, You team, and thanks for all the recaps! Glad you’ll still be here for us when you-know-what-other-drama ends…
I’m glad it’ll be 4 episodes shorter than what we had originally thought – 50. I love this drama but the longer dramas are, the more they manipulate the viewers.
And I really hope they end with a wedding scene!!!
omg yes!!! I am completely in love with this drama! The main couple have such great chemistry and so much fun to watch XD I hope it doesn’t drag the story out but I’m also really happy about this =]
I’m also a bit wary of the Episode extension since I feel that the 30 eps is okay . I really hope it doesn’t drag somewhere along the next episodes, I’m now catching up on the drama and even though the story is just simple, the writer made it really feel at home with it, I guess that’s the drama’s charm and I applaud the whole production team for doing it again, I really enjoyed Last Scandal and watching Smile, You really makes me smile ^^
46 episodes, will they have babies?
its good that the episodes are extended. love this drama!
I haven’t enjoyed a drama this much in a long time. I am not worried about the extension because the lead couple’s chemistry is amazing and I have a feeling we are going to be seeing more of them. I cannot believe the director and the writer won’t want to capitalize on their lead couple’s terrific timing and endearing chemistry.
I don’t think i have a very unique opinion from anyone else (ie: excited about more Soo-In love, but wary of more boring/annoying elder generation drama).
So I’d just like to add my “SSQQQUUUUUUEEE” to everyone else’s. ^^ I’ll try to be an optimist and hope that the ending episodes consist mostly of endearing Soo-In moments…and their SungJoon cupid. And maybe their interactions with the mother. I love those 3 together. ^^ They’re like the comic tri-fecta
@34
I also love HS/JI with the brother. The brother seems like a really fun person to hang out tho’ maybe not reliable.
@ pabo ceo reom Agreed re: Han-se getting ridiculous. He’s been getting really good recently, especially in the scene with the snack truck with Hyun Soo!
I’m simultaneously delighted and worried – Smile, You’s been really good and been getting better with each episode so far, and the pacing’s been fabulous (the leads really get time to work the whole relationship development thing with each other) so if it continues the way it does, then that would be great – but like everyone else here, I’m rather worried it will lose its rhythm mid-way. Let’s all cross our fingers and hope not!
am not sure if this is a good news..
am still in epi 5
epi 1 and 2 were ok.. 3 and 4 was good..
but is the drama that good for me to be extended.. i will have to say no..
it’s not as exciting and funny as YAB, but am loving the leads
..
so if not for them i wouldn’t be continuing watching it.
I actually clapped. Yay. I thought it was 50 orginally so 46 is great. I hope I don’t regret it later. KEKEKE. This would be the longest episode drama I ever watch. I came on to check YAB but to my pleasure surprise I saw Smile,You news.
Thank you soyjoy.
Hooray! I’ve been really enjoying Smile, You. So happy it will be extended. I haven’t had enough of HyunSoo JuIn romance yet. These 2 are so good to watch on screen. of course the other characters add spice to the drama. Some comments are saying that we might even see HyunSoo & JuIn having kids. Not a bad idea! Would HS finalise his choice in the next episode? Am betting for JI. I can imagine some protests in both families. Thank you so much for your recaps. I really enjoy it.
That’s great news..this drama is so entertaining..humorous, touching, and cutesy.. hopeful they want make it dragging or cliche w/ 46 episode..with all the subplot, I am most suprise that Jung-in has a backstory…curious to what her backstory is…hearing that she has a backstory make me curious about her birth (the only thing that is popping my head, lol), seeing how her personality doesn’t match quite well with her family. Her personality isn’t much like her mom or dad. To me, JK is more like her mom…the demure, soft spoken person..and see that there is tension between her and JK just make me wonder if it is because she isn’t the actual daughter…i mean, if that is the case..I can see why at times, there is tension b/w the two..if JK parent treat Jung-in way better than their actual daughter…just too curious w/ the subplot…I want to know Ji-soo subplot too..at time I wonder if she is a gangster girl, at a time, I think maybe is a host or something…want to see how her development w/ SJ is going to go..hopefully it will be as cute as JI & HS in their own way…hehehehe
I just started watching Smile and I’m already hooked after only seeing the first two episodes. Whether or not the extension is a good thing, remains to be seen. Although it is nice to know that the drama is good enough to warrant an extension. It gives me hope that Smile will be able to hold my attention and continue to be entertaining the further into it I get.
awesome.. i like this drama! its better than a lot of the dramas tat i’ve seen.. its not the greatest, but its good.. a lot of pplz can relate to this drama.. lol.. cuz shoo i know i do.. me and my sister is like water and oil, close enough like jung in and her sister’s relationship… we have our differentiate, but remain close enough at times..
I can’t concentrate on reading YAB because I’m giggling over Smile,You
Haven’t been able to watch anything else since ep.16
That’s it I need to watch it again.
I love this! Hyun-soo and Jung-in make me giddy, they are just SO cute. I’m tickled to death over this extension and I hope it stays just as great as it is now, always leaving me wanting more at the end of every episode.
@all4movies , i was thinking the same thing, are they gonna get married and have babies. I hope it don’t get drag on, i am so loving the pace .I am really not excited about the extension thing no matter how much i love it.
This is officially going to be the longest drama I have ever watched and I’m excited for every episode!
I love this drama…after YB, I will certainly tune into this
wow great new i just love this drama so 16 more ep just made mine day ya ya
This is such a good news.
I was kind of disappointed & sad when i found out that it was 30 episodes only just few days ago.
Love both Hyun-soo and Jung-in. Hopefully they will join hand again in the up coming drama.
The drama makes me smile everyday.
I am now hoping that it can be extended to 100 episodes or may be “SMILE, YOU II” Hehe!
This is my NO. 1 drama! Thanks to the director, the screenwriter, the cast & all involved in this drama. Keep up the good work!
Such good news!!! Smile, You…sort of grows on you & I’m soooo thrilled w/ Hyun Soo & Jung In’s romantic development!!! It’s getting better w/ each episode…thanks to the great writing & pacing, I never get bored!!! Hope this wholesome drama gets higher ratings & continue to give us, Drama Addicts, a satisfying & roller-coaster ride..all the way to its 46 episode run!!! LOVE IT!!!
i don’t know when this amazing news article was posted but let me just say, I AM VERY FREAKING PLEASED RIGHT NOW. I AM EXTREMELY ECSTATIC AT READING THIS AT 6:36AM WHEN I HAVEN’T GONE TO SLEEP ALL NIGHT AND WAS PLANNING TO BUT THIS WONDERFUL TIDBIT OF INFORMATION IS GOING TO KEEP ME AWAKE AND EXCITED FOR ANOTHER FEW HOURS. I AM TEEHEEING ALL OVER MY DORM ROOM AND ROLLING AROUND MY BED AND KICKING MY HEELS IN GLEE.
…
yeah, like other people, at second thought i was a little apprehensive of more draggy storylines (is it just me or has it started to drag a little more lately? no? just me? okay, i’m just getting my 16-episode itch on then. damn, those things are annoying, but they just won’t take the hint and leave me alone), howeverrrrr, yes, it was planned for 50 episodes anyway, wasn’t it? and knowing about it this change this early is not going to dent the effect of the pacing by much.
…
sometimes i wish korea paid more attention to things i like but i am very glad right now that they more or less love (when they remember) the two things that i’m in love with, which is wonder girls and smile, you. you freaking rule, korea. keep up the good work.
actually, i’m quite upset about eps extension. cos right, given the consistent pacing of the last 6-8 eps, and the fantastic end of eps 16, i seriously tink that for it to drag another 30 eps, it either mean
1) hyun soo is going to pair with jung kyung and jung in is going to pair with hanse at any time of the show, or
2) they are going to get married and see jung in get tortured by geum ja.
i seriously think (2) is impossible while (1) is going to be the case… i mean, or else how can things drag so long? they have to give jung kyung some stories right? like make her meaner? hee… anyway, i just feel that it’s gonna be way too draggy, just like brilliant legacy where things just MOVE without you knowing it has moved. haha…
remember last scandal? it was perfect w tt number of eps when the leads are so cute. but in smile, only the 2 leads are so cute and i seriously doubt that they can carry on being cute for another 30 eps…
i’m oh-so-worried… O_O
oh, and given the extension, i can almost forsee the start of eps 17:
HS: “Jung In!”
JI: “Yes?”
HS: “are you hungry?”
-_-|||
i’m sure we were all waiting for “I Like You!”
RIGHT??? ^_^
*cross my fingers and hope i’m wRong”
i love this drama!
I was already worried about the original 30 episodes because it might drag…now at 46, whoa. I don’t know what to expect. I hope there won’t be to much angst. This is such a refreshing show and I’d hate it to fade as the episodes go on.
anyway, i’m keeping my fingers crossed! can’t wait for the weekend.
@ 20, cheddar & 40, Lene
I am most suprise that Jung-in has a backstory…curious to what her backstory is…hearing that she has a backstory make me curious about her birth (the only thing that is popping my head, lol), seeing how her personality doesn’t match quite well with her family.
Haha–it’s true, she does fit in better with the Kangs! It’s so fun to read everyone’s conjectures about what will happen next–46 episodes certainly leaves a lot of room for new developments, though I think we’re all cringing a little at the potential pitfalls.
Regarding the above specifically, I just wanted to clarify — I don’t know if Jung-in necessarily has a backstory that will bring out any surprise twists. I was referring more to the fact that we still know nothing about her life prior to the wedding fiasco. Aside from the fact that she was engaged to Hyun-soo, what did she do? One episode hinted that she was popular with the oppas, so where did they go? Why doesn’t she have any friends?
I think Jung-in stands on her own two feet because we’re all so wrapped up in watching her progress with Hyun-soo, but if you think about it, she’s a blank slate. We’ve learned a little about the past of all the characters: Grandpa’s history with the Chairman, Jung-kil’s bratty youth, Sang-hoon’s “first love” crush on Joo-hee, Geum-ja’s thirty years of marriage, Hyun-soo’s past with Jung-kyung, Sung-joon’s faux professional golf career, Ji-soo’s gangsta (?) past.
And yet, Jung-in = ???? To be fair, there was the scene in which she describes her attachment to the Chairman, and she admits she was a lackadaisical student and didn’t do much. Still, I’m really hoping that this blank gets filled in a little bit more. It’s not such a nagging question as to detract from my enjoyment of the series, but it does seem odd.
If I can stand 100+ eps of You Are My Destiny, I can take 46 episodes of Smile, You! No sweat! I was expecting 50 episodes anyway because some sites listed the number of episodes as 50. I agree, so far, at 16 episodes, they still have a lot of (possible) ground to cover, Sung Joon’s love line (I’m reeeally interested in the girl’s background), grandpa triangle (lol!), aside from the adorable main couple. I love all the characters so much! Even Han Se (I thought the actor was blah in other dramas), but he’s sort of cute here sometimes… I vaguely like family dramas, I watch them every now and then, kind of like the way I gravitate to Hallmark-y movies. I don’t regret picking up Smile, You (attributed to my affection for Jung Kyung Ho!) It’s one of my faves this year, next to Shining Inheritance and You’re Beautiful…
I am a little worried because sixteen episodes is approximately enough time for two breaks ups and one botched engagement in KDrama land… but I had pretty much settled on it being a 50 episoder anyway. It kind of makes me sad though because I think the pace is perfect for a shorter series without too many twists and now we know for sure that they are going to add a lot of unnecessary crap that we don’t need. It’s going to be especially tough because the cast is relatively small, as opposed to say Sol Pharmacy with it’s giant, sprawling extended family. And, to be honest, even Sol Pharmacy had trouble filling out all it’s eps and dragged for a few weeks there toward the end. But, as long as Lee Min Jung and Jung Kyung Ho are there being smoking hot together… I guess I wont complain.
One more thing… I was going to wait until the recaps came out to say this but I can’t so if you haven’t watched the latest batch yet then stop reading now. I am SO PROUD of both the writers and Hyunsoo as a character for how they ended episode 16! I was preparing myself to be very angry as I watched Hyunsoo make that infamous reckless U-turn in order to run to Jung-Kyung while Jung-In lets herself be dragged home by Han-Se. I love that they avoided the obvious, angsty, cliche and went for it in this episode. And Hyunsoo was ridiculously hot when he was standing up to Hanse… love him! I just can’t wait to find out what answer he gave Jung-Kyung over the phone. I will be severely disappointed if it isn’t something along the lines of
JK: I have to know. If I’m a friend, what is Jung-In to you?
HS: Jung-In… I like her.
@Z: Gosh, do I love the lack of cliches in this drama. And I, too, was SO scared that HSoo was going to do the U-Turn – actually, it’s become an automatic response now to hold my breath when characters are in vehicles and talking on the phone.
I’m really hoping that Writer Moon had originally planned for a 50 ep drama, then it got cut to 30 eps, and now it’s just being extended to 46 eps, so she’s practically back at square 1. As long as the Soo-In storyline stays refreshing, and Jung-Ho is impeccable with their chemistry/protrayals, I don’t have any complaints. lols.
Looking forward to eps this weekend and recaps ^_^
Ok, let me try this again. Lesson learned: don’t comment at the same time as YB recap is posted. lol. Anywho, this is great news! Thank you! Not much more to say since all the things I wanted to say have already been said but I especially love the idea of SooIn getting married and having kids! lol
@Z, Kgrl: I’m so glad that he didn’t turn back to Jung Kyung too. Also I just have to say Hyun Soo looked so “macho” when he confronted Han Se. lol
Hi to all Smilers
@Z, Kgrl, ch0uxpastryheart ; me too, I was screaming NO to my laptop for HS not to turn back. lol
I don’t know how you guys handle it, watching other drama at the same time, I can’t seem to enjoy anything else to it full extent. My mind keep going back to Smile,You.
Can’t wait till the next eps and recaps
@59
Me too. All the other couples (even the YB couple) seem so blah compared to SooIn. I thought I’d gotten jaded and would never feel like this again but SY thrill me to bits. I am quite besides myself. LOL
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE..it’s the weekend. I wish that I understand Korean. Now I just have to wait for the subs.
@sonam isn’t it the true. lol. They SooIn couple by far exceed any couple to date for me. They are the best of the best. kekeke. I’m seriously in love with them.
Like vrosemarie, I was already expecting 50 episodes because that’s what Dramawiki was listing it as being.
Smile, You is definitely one of the better dramas that I’ve seen, if not the best. It’s just SOOO cute and not typical. And we’re 18 episodes in and I’m still laughing. I can’t say that for almost all the dramas I’ve watched. I saw a bit of a turn in episode 17 when Han Se and Hyun Soo had a showdown, but I’m hoping Han Se stays the cute, whiny, spoiled, Mama’s boy that he is and doesn’t become this villain who turns Hyun Soo x Jung In’s love into some dramatic and serious. Of course, he’s going to be jealous but I’m hoping it stays lighthearted. And maybe by the end of the series, Hyun Soo and Han Se can become friends because they are so funny together. I’m just really crossing my fingers that it doesn’t change into serious stuff like most dramas.
i am thrilled that smile, you will be extended because jung kyung ho and lee min jung has such good chemistry together plus the storylines are realistic and not boring. I hope the writers continue this kind of pace.
I am an avid fan of jung kyung ho, so as long as he is in this kdrama i will continue to watch! fighting!
