You’re Beautiful: Episode 10

(It’s Lee Hong-ki’s uncertain “Uhhhh…..” face that makes this shot for me.)

As for the episode, I kinda hate myself for doing this, but:

EPISODE 10 RECAP

Heyi accuses Mi-nam of liking Tae-kyung, and notes that she doesn’t deny it. Mi-nyeo is in such shock that she’s speechless, and when Heyi announces her intention to tell Tae-kyung, Mi-nyeo drops to her knees and shakes her head frantically as the guys start to approach. Reading her panic, Heyi says, “You don’t want me to? Then shut up when I do things my way.”

Heyi turns to the guys and says with fake worry that Mi-nam is ill. They recall that she had the beginnings of a cold and don’t question her, not seeing that Heyi mouths to Mi-nyeo, “Talk and you die.”

Sung-chan is sympathetic and sends Mi-nyeo home, saying she can make up the shoot later. He gives Heyi a ride back as well and answers her questions cheerfully, not aware of how Heyi is pointedly directing the comments at Mi-nyeo. For instance, she drives home that Mi-nam’s facing an important role in the band: “If a problem arises with Mi-nam, President Ahn, you and A.N.JELL will both be in a lot of trouble.”

Sung-chan agrees with her assessment, so Heyi turns to Mi-nyeo: “You heard, right? You’ll have to do a good job so things aren’t ruined for Tae-kyung oppa. And you can’t tell anyone the secret conversation we had. If you tell, I can’t keep my end of the secret either. Understand?”

In the safety of her own room (since Mi-ja is out at the moment), Mi-nyeo cries over her dilemma. She feels the burden of responsibility for A.N.JELL’s continued success in the wake of Heyi’s blackmailing.

She looks at the childhood photo of her with her brother and says, “Oppa, I’m so scared. What if he’s hurt because of me?” To clear up any ambiguity over who she’s talking about, she looks over at a photo of Tae-kyung. “He’s someone who shouldn’t be liked by a thing like me. I can’t ruin him.”

As the shoot wraps, Tae-kyung wonders how Mi-nyeo’s doing and asks to take some limes home with him. He doesn’t see Shin-woo asking the prop guy for some limes, too, nor Jeremy. When the guys arrive home, they find that she’s in bed and feverish. Tae-kyung starts to speak in concern, but stops himself and instead says gruffly, “If you were sick, you should have said so. Because of you, today’s shoot was ruined.”

Mi-nyeo apologizes and promises not to ruin anything in the future, but her weak response has him dissatisfied. He wonders if she’s gotten used to his (brusque) way of speaking, or whether she’s just out of energy. He turns his glare to Pig-Rabbit to scold, “If you droop like that, it takes the fun out of picking on her.” He grabs the ears to perk them upright, then wonders how to feed Mi-nyeo the limes.

All three guys have thought of the nutrition value of limes with the intent of giving them to Mi-nam, so Tae-kyung has to hide his surprise to find Shin-woo and Jeremy in the kitchen with theirs. In keeping with their previously shown preferences, Shin-woo suggests making hot tea with his limes, but Jeremy would rather make juice.

Tae-kyung feels stupid now, so he has to play off his intent, saying he liked eating the limes so much he brought them home for his own enjoyment. He takes a bite nonchalantly, pretending it’s tasty. (I apologize for the crudeness of the gif; I’ve never made one before so I had to figure out how to do it, but the moment was just begging for an animated gif.)

Tae-kyung shoots a glare at Pig-Rabbit, then figures, “Since everyone else is taking care of Mi-nam, I guess I don’t need to step in.”

Shin-woo brings her tea, but since she’s asleep he sets it aside, although it’ll be cold when she wakes. (The point being: his timing is bad.) Seeing Mi-nyeo shivering in her sleep, he says, “Don’t be sick, Mi-nam, because then I can’t stand by and not do something.”

Later that night, Tae-kyung heads to the kitchen because he can’t sleep. (He blames it on eating so many limes, rather than entertaining the possibility that it could be any other reason.) As he closes the fridge door, he starts at the sight of a haggard Mi-nyeo standing there looking like death. She groans, “I need… water…” (Symbolism! After all, Shin-woo = tea, Jeremy = juice, Tae-kyung = water.)

She collapses against him, and he rushes her to the hospital. As he drives, he berates himself for letting her illness get this bad. They should have called for help earlier.

He pulls up to the emergency room, but Mi-nyeo resists when he tries to usher her inside. Knowing that entering the hospital will put an end to her masquerade as Mi-nam, she refuses and staggers away.

His concern making him angry, Tae-kyung grabs her — her fever is too high and being discovered is the lesser of her worries (in his eyes). But Mi-nyeo bursts out, “I won’t go! Aren’t you afraid? What happens if I’m found out? If a thing like me — I’m so afraid you’ll be hurt because of a thing like me.”

Tae-kyung: “It’s not time for you to be worried about me. And I’ve been prepared for it ever since I promised to accept you. I’ll handle it, so let’s go to the hospital.”
Mi-nyeo: “I also made a promise not to be discovered. So I cannot go to the hospital.”

In frustration, Tae-kyung has to let her have her way. In the car, he covers her with his jacket and tells her more gently, “It’s okay if you cry or throw up, so you don’t have to clench your teeth and hold back.”

At home, Tae-kyung prepares supplies and tells Shin-woo that Mi-nam is really sick. This time, however, it’s Tae-kyung’s turn to hold Shin-woo back. He says, “I’ll look after her. You don’t have to worry about it.” Shin-woo clenches his fist, but stands by as Tae-kyung takes his tray to Mi-nyeo.

Throughout the night, Tae-kyung applies a cold compress and monitors Mi-nyeo’s progress as her fever runs its course. Finally, at 5am, she wakes up, still weak but better now. He anticipates her comments, guessing that she’s about to thank him and apologize before she actually says the words.

Tae-kyung: “Seeing how you worried about me even though you were that sick, you seem to have some loyalty. Seeing you enduring through it, you’ve also got some spirit. I haven’t wanted to accept you and wanted to reject you, but because of this, I’m accepting you. I’m on the same team as you now, so I feel a duty to look after you, and I’ll take responsibility for your affairs, too.”
Mi-nyeo: “I’m truly sorry. I’ll think carefully about what to do from now. And thank you for saying that.”
Tae-kyung: “In the future, don’t do things to be sorry for. Just think and live with a grateful spirit.”

Now that she’s better, he heads off to get some sleep. Mi-nyeo decides, “I can’t let things go any further. To make sure I’m not caught, and that he’s not hurt, Go Mi-nam has to disappear.”

From the hallway, Shin-woo watches Tae-kyung leave Mi-nam’s room, figuring that she must be better now. I suppose this means he was there all night, and he decides, “I’ll stay just a while longer” until she’s better.

Meanwhile, Hoon-yi has been busy creating Mi-nam pogs and hadn’t even known Mi-nam was sick until the stylist tells him. He enthuses about Mi-nam’s success and thinks of an appropriate “legend” to add to the A.N.JELL history.

First, he thinks of making Mi-nam a descendant of Bruce Lee, but the stylist shoots him down. Then what if he pairs her with a princess? Since Jeremy has England covered, they could pair Mi-nam with an Indian princess.

The stylist shoots down that idea, too (there are no Indian princesses anymore), so Hoon-yi settles on Old Faithful: a birth secret. They could paint Mi-nam’s mother as a mysterious, grand woman. In Hoon-yi’s fantasy, she is the tough woman who stands up to an invading Japanese samurai and dies for her beliefs. Of course, the stylist vetoes this as well, calling Hoon-yi childish.

Next, we have a few more Mi-nam fantasies, but this time they come from Tae-kyung’s mind. He goes shopping for women’s clothing — something to make Mi-nyeo look “definitely like a girl” in order to “disguise” her.

He rejects the sexy black and the flirty pink lace because they’re not his style. But a classic Jackie O outfit catches his eye, and he thinks, “Yeah, I’d like her to dress like that.”

Then he catches himself: “What do I care about liking it? This is just for an emergency escape. Any women’s clothes will do.”

The shopgirl is excited at his purchase, assuming they’re for Heyi. (Heyi had declined their offer to “sponsor” her with clothes — i.e., she would wear their brand to heighten their profile — but now she would since Tae-kyung is buying them for her.)

Another brand happy to “sponsor” the celebrities is the couple ring purveyor, who had supplied the rings in the MV worn by Heyi and Tae-kyung. Since they’re a real couple, they offer the rings for the idol stars to keep, and Heyi guesses, “If I ask him to wear it for real, he wouldn’t, would he? But I’d like to.” She pouts, “He bought a hairclip for a thing like Go Mi-nam. I really hate her!”

Jeremy and Shin-woo are eager to take care of Mi-nyeo, offering her some lime juice and a blanket. When Heyi drops by, I love how the guys look dismayed to have Heyi ruin the party. She explains that she’s here to drop by on the sick Mi-nam and see Tae-kyung, who isn’t home yet.

However, she has another agenda, and starts out by getting rid of the guys first. She asks Shin-woo to retrieve fruit from the car, then asks Jeremy for a drink. Both leave reluctantly, uncertain about leaving Mi-nam with Heyi.

They head to Mi-nam’s room for a word in private, and Heyi says, “I thought you’d get scared and run away, but surprisingly you’re hanging in there.” Mi-nyeo answers, “I won’t run away like this.”

Heyi enjoys seeing Mi-nyeo squirm, so she says that Shin-woo and Jeremy, who are so good to her, are bound to change if they knew the truth. She threatens to tell them: “You should be begging me.”

But Mi-nyeo startles her by answering seriously, “I will tell them. I’ll tell Shin-woo hyung and Jeremy. They probably won’t forgive me, but I will tell them the truth and leave.” Heyi adds, “Then can you tell them that you like Hwang Tae-kyung, too?”

Mi-nyeo’s face falls at that: “Do I have to say that too?” Sensing weakness, Heyi asserts, “Of course. That’s why you got caught by me, because you didn’t know your place and fell for him.”

Mi-nyeo gathers her nerves, then says, “Then I will say that, too.”

Heyi doesn’t like this, because it removes her power. All along, she’s been trying to be the puppetmaster and constantly finds herself thwarted, so by now she’s tired of being outsmarted. She says spitefully, “Fine, tell them everything! When oppa gets home, gather them together and tell them all! I’ll see with my eyes what becomes of you.”

In a bratty tantrum, Heyi knocks the glass out of Mi-nyeo’s hand, sending it crashing to the ground.

At the noise, Shin-woo walks in with concern. Immediately, Heyi switches on the act and says in a wounded tone, “Mi-nam, why are you doing this? It’s really mean of you to act like this just because I touched your things.”

She’s been outplayed, so Mi-nyeo just apologizes and crouches to pick up the pieces. When Shin-woo helps, Mi-nyeo asks him to get the vacuum. Heyi follows Shin-woo out and says with false concern, “Mi-nam is acting strange. I think he’s hiding something. Does he have something I’m not supposed to see?” She insinuates that Mi-nam’s overreaction suggests that he’s hiding something from Shin-woo.

Shin-woo doesn’t know the extent of her fakeness but he’s sharp enough to know Heyi’s no saint, so he doesn’t take her bait. He’s not interested in digging into people’s secrets. When Heyi asks if such a secret would make him feel bad, Shin-woo replies, “I’m sure there’s a reason for it. If it’s a reason I can understand, then no, I don’t feel bad.” Confused and frustrated, Heyi next tests Jeremy:

Heyi: “If Mi-nam does something wrong, do you just put up with it?”
Jeremy: “But he doesn’t do anything wrong.”
Heyi: “There could be a big thing that you don’t know about. What would you do then?”
Jeremy: “I’d put up with it. I really like Go Mi-nam, so everything is fine with me.”

Heyi has heard from one of her staffers that Tae-kyung bought clothes, ostensibly for her, and sees the shopping bag when he arrives home. When he walks past her, she deduces that the clothes aren’t for her — which mean they must be for Mi-nam.

Heyi has something to give him “because I need proof you’re mine,” then holds up her hand with the two couple rings on it. Tae-kyung takes the man’s ring and comments, “It’s pretty.” Then he puts it back on her hand, “Looks good on you. Wear them both.” He adds, “I’m saying this in case you get confused, but let’s make this clear. I’m not yours.”

Mi-nam requests a meeting with all the A.N.JELL guys, ready to tell them something. They all wait for her to speak, as she works up the nerve to tell them the whole truth.

Meanwhile, Heyi worries, “What happens if Go Mi-nam reveals everything and Shin-woo and Jeremy are still okay with it?” Then, a worse thought strikes her: “What happens when Tae-kyung finds out Mi-nam likes him? I can’t let her tell him!”

Therefore, Heyi races back inside the house, determined to put a stop to Mi-nam’s confession, arriving just as Mi-nyeo says, “What I want to tell you… Actually, I…”

Heyi makes a grunting noise to get the others’ attention. As the guys turn toward her, she says, “Tae-kyung oppa, I have something to say to you” — and gags again.

The implication is clear (she’s pregnant!) and everyone gapes in surprise, most of all Tae-kyung, since he knows this is clearly not possible. Jeremy connects the dots: “If she gags, does that mean… that thing that happens often in the dramas…?”

Heyi manages to say, “Oppa I’m sorr—” just as she gags again and rushes for the bathroom.

I LOVE JEREMY — even if I didn’t love him already, I’d love him for his next line as he says hesitantly, “Then do we have to have a congratulations party?”

Shin-woo prods Tae-kyung to take care of his girl. Tae-kyung knows Heyi’s playing around but denying it won’t get the others to believe him. He gripes, “She’s so dead!”

Heyi is pleased with her performance — she stopped Mi-nam from talking AND gave Tae-kyung a shock. Two birds, one stone. From the bathroom, Heyi calls Mi-nyeo to instruct, “Don’t tell them now. Revealing the truth won’t help Tae-kyung at all. Reveal it and take responsibility somewhere else, when there are a lot of people gathered. You don’t want those people [A.N.JELL] dragged in and hurt too, do you?”

Heyi brings up Mi-nam’s press preview for her music video: “End it there.”

Tae-kyung confronts Heyi about her stunt, but she airily tells him to be cool and refuses to tell the others it was faked. Understanding how her mind works, Tae-kyung follows her out and indicates the rings she’s wearing: “You were mad about that?” She answers, “You should have listened. Don’t piss me off.”

Taking her phone, Tae-kyung sees that he’s not #1 in her speed dial. (Her father is #1.) She’s flattered and asks, “Why, do you want to be #1?”

He asks, “Is your father scary?” Thinking to give Tae-kyung a good warning, Heyi says that her father is so scary that if he were to piss him off, he’d rip out all Tae-kyung’s hair.

This setup recalls the shoe scene at the lake, so we know to expect something as Tae-kyung punches in a few keys, and says, “Good thing you’re afraid of him.” He shows her the message he has typed: “Dad I’m pregnant.”

Heyi panics and tries to wrest the phone away from him, warning him not to do it — but he pushes SEND and off it goes. He asks, “What’ll you do? Looks like you’re getting a haircut today.” (Immediately, her phone rings. Tae-kyung leaves Heyi assuring Daddy that it’s not true.)

Tae-kyung explains to his bandmates that Heyi was merely feeling ill and warns them, “Don’t imagine anything more.” Now they recall that Mi-nam had something to tell them, but now that she’s been blackmailed by Heyi, she can’t come clean. Mi-nyeo apologizes for causing so much trouble, and they respond true to form: Shin-woo understands, Jeremy says it’s okay, and Tae-kyung says it’s hardly the first time.

Mi-nyeo is touched at their response, and prays, “Mother Superior, I have received such good care that I don’t deserve. Please give me courage to do what I have to so they are not hurt.”

Smelling pay dirt, Aunt Mi-ja had told Hwa-ran that she doesn’t know where the twins are. They may have even been adopted. Since she’s the sole blood relation to songwriter Go Jae-hyun, Hwa-ran can just hand over the money (for the remake) to Mi-ja…

She then toasts her impending riches with some friends, bragging about her encounter with Hwa-ran and gossipping about a hunch — she’s certain that Hwa-ran had something going on with her brother. She wonders if Hwa-ran knows who the twins’ mother is, but a friend wonders if Hwa-ran herself is the mother. Mi-ja pooh-poohs that suggestion, because an unmarried and pregnant Hwa-ran would have caused a lot of rumors. But then, she remembers that Hwa-ran had briefly retired, some twenty years ago.

Hearing that the twins are out of reach comes as a blow to Hwa-ran, who drowns her sorrows listening to the song. She asks, “You wrote this song asking me to come back to you, didn’t you? You made it for me. You only loved me.”

Tae-kyung also listens to the song and thinks, “Did you beg for him to return and abandon me?” He asks Pig-Rabbit, “She wants to remake a song like this — can you understand that woman?” He sighs that when he’s feeling down like this, he’d prefer Mi-nam to the Pig-Rabbit, since “the real Go Mi-nam has some use.”

So, next he finds Mi-nyeo outside, gazing at the sky. She can’t make out the stars, though, because the lights are too bright. Tae-kyung advises that she turn off the light, so they stand in the dark for a while.

Tae-kyung asks if she’s worried about her press conference tomorrow. She’ll have to go alone, because Sung-chan thinks it’s better to focus attention on Mi-nam rather than the other A.N.JELL guys.

Mi-nyeo says, “Later, when I think of this place, I’ll feel like it was a dream. You, Shin-woo hyung, and Jeremy are far-away people like those stars in the sky, and I will have been among you. Because the stars can be seen from anywhere, I’ll always be able to see you even if I’m not here.”

Tae-kyung squints to look at Mi-nyeo’s face — blurry in the dark — and reminds her, “I can’t see you very well. Not being able to see you is frustrating. So don’t be somewhere I can’t see you.”

Mi-nyeo points out, “You can’t see me very well even though I am here.” She waves a hand in front of his face, but he grabs it.

Tae-kyung: “I can see. I can see you enough to know you’re there.”
Mi-nyeo: “Do you really see me?”
Tae-kyung: “Yes. I can see you. So when it’s dark, stay at this distance so I can see you.”
Mi-nyeo: “I understand. But I have a request. When I quit being Go Mi-nam and return to being a girl, even if you see me well, please act like you don’t see me. I’ll pretend not to see you, too.”
Tae-kyung: “You want us to act like we don’t know each other?”
Mi-nyeo: “Yes. Please promise me that you won’t act like you know me as a girl.”

Tae-kyung is surprised at her request, and he looks at her in confusion, but bravado forces him to say, “Of course, that’s how it should be. I’ll promise. Let’s not act like we know each other.”

She thanks him with tears in her eyes and heads back to her room. Tae-kyung remains in the dark — both literally and figuratively — as he frowns over her words.

In her room, Mi-nyeo finds the clothes he’d bought. He texts her the message: “Those are clothes for you to wear when you have to leave quickly. Keep it out of sight. When you’re dressed in these like a girl, I won’t act like I know you at all.”

The next day, Mi-nyeo prepares for her preview event and is wished well by the guys as she heads off with Hoon-yi.

However, at some point she slips away, meaning that by the time she is supposed to take the stage, she’s nowhere to be found. Hoon-yi races around looking for her, and Sung-chan nervously barks at him to find Mi-nam asap. Heyi anticipates the show to come and calls Mi-nyeo to make sure she’s ready.

The A.N.JELL guys hear about Mi-nam’s disappearance, and Tae-kyung suggests that they go to the preview. If Mi-nam doesn’t show up, at least they’ll be able to manage the press.

When Tae-kyung changes his clothes, his eyes land on Pig-Rabbit sitting in his chair, like normal — but missing its hair clip. This is odd, so he heads into Mi-nam’s room, where he finds the shopping bag empty.

He thinks of her words last night. Now they have an ominous reading, and he guesses what she’s about to do. He leaves her a voicemail: “Go Mi-nam, run away instead. If you show up in that outfit, you’ll be in big trouble! I’ll take responsibility and handle this, so you can’t come here.”

All the while, Mi-nam heads toward the event, having gone elsewhere to change into her female garb. Mustering her courage, she tells herself, “I have to take responsibility. I can’t push it off to other people.”

The three guys cause a stir, but their worries are focused on Mi-nam, who is still missing by the time they arrive at the screening hall. In an effort to buy time, Sung-chan orders the video to begin, causing the lights to flick off — meaning, Tae-kyung can’t see.

Tersely, he tells Shin-woo and Jeremy, “I can’t see a thing, so I can’t look for him. Find Go Mi-nam.” They have to find Mi-nam before anyone else does, and knowing that time is ticking, he gives them one last, key bit of info: “Look for a girl.”

Shocker! Shin-woo is not surprised, but Jeremy is stunned. Baffled, he protests, “But you said to search for Go Mi-nam.”

Tae-kyung tells him quietly, “Go Mi-nam is that girl.” He has no time to explain, so he tells them to find her quickly and take her away. He heads back outside to the lit lobby to continue the search, almost missing Mi-nyeo as she walks right by the fans, unnoticed, and heads into the theater.

Tae-kyung chases as Mi-nyeo makes her way slowly down the aisle, walking toward the front. Tae-kyung is standing behind her, but everything appears blurry.

Fighting his desperation, he tries to make out her form in the dark as he mutters, “I can’t see anything. I can’t see Go Mi-nam.”

Frustrated, Tae-kyung yells out into the quiet room, “I told you not to be where I can’t see you!”

That causes a stir, as everyone looks around for the source of the outburst. Mi-nyeo stops in her tracks, recognizing Tae-kyung’s voice, and turns back around to face him. Knowing he can’t see her, she thinks, “Please don’t see me here. It’s no good if you see me.”

Just then, the lights turn on.

Girls squeal as they recognize Tae-kyung, but his eyes land on Mi-nyeo and focus sharply on her, just as the music kicks in — rather perfectly — “I shouldn’t have done that, I should’ve acted like I didn’t know, like I didn’t see you, like I couldn’t see you…

The crowd is starting to stir, sensing a big moment, but they haven’t recognized Mi-nyeo yet…

…and at just that moment, Shin-woo whirls her around — to hide her face — and holds her to him.

Shin-woo trades looks with Tae-kyung, then Jeremy, before he turns to the reporters to announce, “She’s my girlfriend. She’s the girlfriend I couldn’t reveal before.”

COMMENTS

Finally, Shin-woo’s timing works out! Earlier when she was sick, he had told Mi-nyeo that she should be well, otherwise he’d feel forced to act. I’m sure he recognizes that Mi-nyeo doesn’t feel the same way about him as he does for her, and I think that’s why he’s taking a voluntary backseat. He’s too much a gentleman to play the part of the stereotypical overbearing Kdrama Second Lead who forces his affections on a woman who doesn’t reciprocate. So the only thing that would actually force him to step up and assert himself is if she actually needed him to — ergo, the ending scene.

I’ll admit that the last shot, of Shin-woo holding Mi-nam to hide her face, didn’t have the same punch for that it probably was supposed to have because a similar moment was so fantastic in Last Scandal of My Life, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate it anyway. I’m often iffy about secondary romances swooping in to impede the main romance at this point in the story, but this is a case where it’s done right.

This moment of Shin-woo stepping in and pushing Tae-kyung aside (metaphorically) isn’t just a contrived plot twist; it works because it’s a confluence of factors that have been built up and layered in over the course of the whole series. The song is layered over Tae-kyung’s blindness — and subsequent sight — which is layered over the star-moon conversation, layered over Shin-woo’s desire to help but only when he must, layered over Heyi’s manipulations, et cetera… It’s a great build-up to an important moment and therefore I digs it. Furthermore, this happens just as Tae-kyung is getting to the point where I think he’s ready to admit his feelings for Mi-nyeo, having gotten past most of the initial denial, only to have that snatched away from him. Angst!

I’ve raved about the Hong sisters plenty, both regarding this drama and in the past, but I’m not blind to their faults and I’m still going to point out when something is dissatisfying. Therefore I have to say that I find Heyi as the big evil pretty funny for the first stretch, but thought it started feeling like “Give me a break” stuff by this episode. The Heyi thing definitely starts to feel like too much, but thankfully, with this episode she’s been totally de-fanged and stripped of her venom. Hopefully this means that the remaining conflict is more about the people at the core of the relationship, rather than a spiteful third party messing things up for our main characters.

(The Hong sisters have definitely improved on their plotting and angst development over the years, because I know a big complaint about Delightful Girl Chun-hyang was the overclingy second leads. That improved in My Girl but there was still a little bit of contrived “Get over it already” obstacles keeping our couple apart. Hong Gil Dong was lucky (in one sense) to have the politics acting as another conflict, to take the burden off the romantic conflict from carrying the story through its latter stages. So I think that with You’re Beautiful, they’re continuing to improve.)

Nice ending!

There usually comes a point in a K-romcoms when I just want to slap one or both of the leads upside the head and shout "Just get your act together and say what you MEAN, will'ye!" With YB, to its credit, it comes a little later than usual - middle of this episode, when TK agrees not to acknowledge MN as a girl. (WHAT??!!! I know we are supposed to draw out the love-angst, but this denial and meanness to MN is getting ridiculous (and worryingly pathological)) I was also getting quite tired of HY as the destructive and self-destructive Agent of Doom. How much of a mess can an unscrupulous person make of our lovely heroine? All right all right - a BIG mess - we know already, so give them both a break. The witch-act and the patient-saint act were starting to get tedious. I found myself even *longing* for the anticipated / feared Angst Fest...

But. All saved! By a brilliant ending! The annoyingly abounding spoilers (I don't watch previews because I hate spoilers, but spoilers are kinda hard to avoid nowadays with the manic interest) which made me sorta expect it; nonetheless I thought it was brilliant. It was all set up to be all about MN, or perhaps all about TK finally coming through, or All Tragic, and instead it was all about SW finally stepping up to the plate. Wow! That sure took the wind out of everyone's sails. What a great ending, and what a way to keep YB fans in a fevered frenzy for a week!

One tiny weeny eentsy quibble. Whatever possessed TK to suddenly take it into his head to buy girl clothes for MN? Just because he feels sorry that she is sick? Because he's starting to realise he wants her to be a girl? Oh c'mon. Can't buy that. Clearly it was a contrived Plot Device so that she could make her grand Exit and Reveal in clothes that he bought. Oh well, as I said, TINY complaint about an otherwise impressive set-up.

But how will they get away? Can SW really hide MN from all the press?! I know I know! [waves at teacher, bounces up and down chair]. SW will turn MN round to everyone and introduce her as his band-mate's twin sister! All fixed! [Serendipity smiles beatifically]

"... made me cringe, especially with the pointy oversized-looking shoes..."

And don't forget the heels [shudders]

@ 159 Lisa

No, I don't think you are missing anything. SW really is a rather bland screen personality. Probably a perfect boyfriend in real life (and TK would probably be insufferable). But in TV Land -- sorry, boring. Happiness paints white. Or rather, niceness is uninteresting. Perhaps a better actor could have been a little more compelling? We'll never know.

i was so right about the ending!! waaahh! haha. thanks JAVABEANS for the recap. This episode was so major. And I really love Jeremy's facial reaction when he saw Shin-woo hugging a 'girl'. And Tae-kyung was so divine when he stomped his foot because he was so frustrated he couldn't take Mi-Nam to the hospital. Love, love, love <3

Gee I think YB and JB's awesome recaps need 'warnings' - I was so engrossed in reading this recap I not only nearly missed my stop (literally I looked up to see that I HAVE to get off NOW 2 secs before it was too late, while still trying to read the addictive recap / crack!).

I continued reading as I was walking home (please note this is in the dark, at night) and had 2 close calls ie other wise known as close encounters of the telegraph pole kind. And I don't have night blindness like TK - just YB effected blindness. :)

I was so looking forward rushing home to watch Ep 10 - only for argghhh disaster to happen to my DL (it had failed :( ) Never mind I'll reread the recaps then watch it later.

Really the YB recaps threads make it seem like tri weekly OT threads. Fun fun fun.

I've only read some of the comments here, but I get the impression most of you think SW is claiming MN to be his girl. To me, the important point is that SW must shield MN's face from the reporters/photographers. The world at large does not know (yet) that the girl is MN, so there is no "fake couple" there.

Shielding MN's face is the priority here, and SW is the best candidate to do that due to circumstances (no night blindness, knows all along MN is a girl). After shielding her face, he has to give an excuse anyway. It's not like he is outright claiming MN, although that could be a subtle statement to TK.

@201 serendipity- TK buys girly clothes for MN so that she could use it in case of any emergency (?) where she actually had to be a girl.Maybe the 'going to the hospital' encounter worried TK bout something happening to MN because she was stubborn enough not to go see a doc while being so sick just because she was in the guise of a guy and didn't want to be found out?

And at that point of time when he went shopping for clothes he wasn't really tuned into his feelings for MN.He was just trying to help out MN in the way he thought was best.Just my 2 cents.

@174 Fan

I love your observations. So right on!

Ok, so I take back what I said about HY last episode. I hate her now. She is one scheming, lying…I do appreciate the funny moments that she brings to a rather angst-filled episode. Her faking pregnancy with Jeremy and TK’s reaction to that was funny. And I thought her scene with TK and the text message to her dad was the funniest of the episode.

One of my favorite lines is when TK tells MN that it was okay to throw up. That confirms that he has fallen for her. Knowing how much of a stickler for hygiene he is, this is TK confessing, in his own way, how much she means to him.

The last two episodes have been building up to TK finally realizing his feelings for MN. This episode, we see him gradually letting those feelings taking over his conscious mind – him not being able to sleep because MN was not there, or preferring MN to the pig-rabbit when he felt down, and finally, “I told you not to be where I can’t see you” all the while panicking that perhaps, he has lost her…forever?

That last scene in the theater, I thought my heart was going to stop beating. When TK uttered those words with so much emotions and MN turned and they exchanged that look with the song in the background. Then, SW saying MN was his girl, very obviously aimed at TK before they gave each other that killer stare. I thought my heart stopped.

I agree with 193 alert – someone needs to spread the news about the fans getting heart attacks.

@79 YABaddict

“seeing the girl he may have just realized he loves wearing the clothes and hairpin he bought for her in the arms of another man”

ARGH….is right!

I think I’m going to need more crack or major therapy to get through this coming week.

First of just want to say Thank you so much for the "crack" JB. I HEART youuuu... :)

emm.. I was kinda feeling a bit irk on the way this episode ended, I'm not rooting for another possibility of FAKING something in order to save MN. MN has enough "fake" situation on her hand and adding another one (even though SW intention is good) is like adding salt to an open wound. But i'll just trust the HONG sisters.. Hopefully it turns out well.

about major SQUEEEEEEEE moment, I'm soooo with you JB.
JGS is such an amazing actor, well both him and PSH are amazing, they're really talented. I love it when actors can make viewers hoping they'll hook up on real life, cause they're are just tooooo adorable! :) and the fact that both can act with only their eyes is another plus points.

But not only those two who amaze me, cause in my opinion , I think HONGKI did extremely well on his character too. :) His expression are spot on and epic.. :) and as for SW, emm well he is ok, but I always get a feeling that something lacking about SW character, but I don't know if it's because YongHwa who is too plain when playing out SW or is it because the "nice guy in shinning armor always here to protect you" kind of character are relatively a bland character to be played.

weee... can't wait for next week..!

I'm a lurker on DB for a long, long time but YB is pushing me out of lurkdom. DB, thanks for the recaps. Now I can understand what was happening. I was watching this raw (first time) when I don't understand korean at all. I'm turning into an addict and was refreshing the webpage countless of time.

I really, really love the themes that keeps repeating but with a slightly different tone throughout the drama. I don't know if I'm reading too much into it but I feel that the stares between TK and SW starts from when TK was comforting MN after she heard that her mom was dead. Then, SW could only look from the sidelines. Then there was the one where SW stops TK from chasing after MN after the recording.
In this ep, SW (again!!!) had to stand aside when TK insisted to look after the sick MN. But at the auditorium, it is TK who had to stand aside. SW's stare is sort of telling TK that I know that you like her but at this moment, only I can approach her and help her (and A.N.Jell).

As for Jeremy, he is super duper cute! He had a double whammer at the end of the ep for now he knows that MN is a girl and before he can come to grips about it, he had a competitor as in SW. I don't think he caught TK's killer stare though, So I'm not sure about that. This time, I don't think that he can try to reason that SW is only being helpful as being the senior member helping out the junior.

I dunno whether I'm making sense or not but I NEED TO GET THIS OUT!!!

Now the long wait for next Wed, Thu and Fri begins again (I'm in M'sia so DB's recaps is out on Thu & Fri for me)

@206 Ana

Well, "emergency use" is what he SAYS to himself. But we all know by now that TK hardly ever means what he says, even to himself. So I think we're supposed to believe that he really just wanted to be sweet to his sweetheart, and somehow in K-drama Land, the buying of nice clothes by a man-with-means for a woman-who-is-down is supposed to be the ultimate show of care (or something). But it's just too uncharacteristic of him, and too timely for MN's next move. Oh well. The Hong Sisters are so smoking hot I think they are allowed the use of an occasional Plot Device.

Like, did anyone else catch how TK's anticipating MN's "thank you" and "I'm so sorry" after she wakes from her fever and discovers he has been tending to her mirrors him anticipating MN's "I'm so sorry" and "Please forgive me" at the beginning of Ep 3 when she tried to stop him from exposing her to President Ahn? Except, of course, now with a totally different tone and attitude (from implacable to tender). I thought that was amazingly well-crafted. Wow, the Hong Sisters are really not making it all up as they along (as one feels so many K-dramas do).

@111 - thanks (and also to other people) for pointing out the many 'fakes' - fake relationship, fake boy, fake couples, fake fairy, fake 'love'.... also there is the 'fake kiss', 'fake sincerity' (GMN's money-minded aunt), and probably going to be a fake parent soon (maybe).... now, perhaps 'true' twin brother could prevent the scandals of 'fake idol gender'.... like many, hoping may come into picture and thwart the fake fairy.... [I sense that fake fairy's punishment towards the end of this drama will be extreme embarrassment - to have the public become aware of the true ugliness of her character. Will she repent or be given chance to atone? The question is forgiveness - GMN would certainly forgive her but many viewers probably would not]

very impatient to see how all male trio will handle GMN as now each other male knows her gender.... each will know he has competition!!! big time!!! the subtle 'contests' of getting GMN to choose her favourite circular card, her drink, etc.... will probably get more obvious...... perhaps possessive traits may surface...... can't wait.... battle for that one special room-mate...... I suspect if GMN continues to live in the A.N.JELL house, she will certainly have her own room......

TRULY ENJOY YOUR GREAT RE-CAPs..... may I say, they are so punctual and reliable, definitely celebrates this amazing drama with incredible enthuasism, passion. CERTAINLY my vote for best K-drama aired in 2009. THANKS HEAPS DRAMABEANS....

After reading your recap, I watch the subbed version on viikii and I must said the beauty of YAB is the small details that entwined nicely. JB, you captured the "Without Words" that fit in nicely at the end of it. It seem that all the OST are all well planned because I also notice Kim Dong Wook's "My Heart is cursing" also fit in nicely in the scene after MN bid her farewell (perceptively told him not to acknowledge each other if she is girl) .

My heart is cursing because it can't say "I love you"
Tear burst and my yearning is flowing and flowing.
...............I love you, I love you forever
Although you say you won't see me

211 serendipity -hmmm:-) *thinking*

That "thank you","I'm sorry" scene was incredibly touching. It redeems TK for all the times he was *nasty* to MN.TK's character is such that his actions always seem to contradict his words. And its with this scene as well as the one in the car where he tells MN its ok to cry or even throw up( even though he is such a clean freak), that you can almost see the slow shift/change in his character.

And yes every small thing introduced in the beginning( OCD,nightblindness, allergies etc) all seem to be lead to something interesting in the following episodes. The Hong sisters have an incredible eye for detail and therefore this also ensures plot continuity.

@201 & 211 Serendipity

Here's my take on this. When Tae Kyung was taking care of Minam, he acknowledged his respect for Minam for her loyalty to him by refusing to go to the hospital to avoid possibly getting him hurt, and said that he was on her side and would take responsibility for her. Therefore this newfound sense of responsibility inspired him to buy clothes for her in case she needed it in the future. So it wasn't that contrived a plot device after all. haha, hope i make sense.

Anyway, what I found a bit excessive was how almost every character likes to talk aloud to themselves i.e. TK, Heyi talk a LOT to themselves. hahaha.

I kind of don't get it; But I haven't watched this yet so maybe I'm missing something... if the reason that Min-yeo let Heyi blackmail her was so that Tea-Kyoung and the rest of the guys didn't get hurt, then what's the point of revealing everything at a press conference. Doesn't that defeat the purpose? And why does Heyi even suggest that she do it? Doesn't that mean things will officially be over? I guess she figures if Min-yeo is going to do it anyway, she should do it in the way that will hurt her the most... but still; all her conniving is in vain.

By the way, I'm so ready for her character to fade into the background. The only good thing about having her around is all the funny ways she gets thwarted, especially by Tea-kyoung... this is the first "fake" relationship that I've ever enjoyed because Tea-Kyoung doesn't even try to pretend. But, her crazay is getting out of hand so it's time for her to go.

I just re-watched Episode 10. What to do, I'm so addicted. Anyhow, just some observations....

It looked like TK suspects that HY has been messing with MN, perhaps telling MN she knows she is a girl. He started to ask HY when he came back from shopping but dismissed it.

And on the rooftop, TK said he can see MN, but really it’s blurry so he probably didn’t see her sad face or the tears in her eyes.

Since MN is probably not going to confess her feelings to TK and TK though usually straight-forward, may not confess to save face, maybe HY will be the one who tells TK how MN feels about him, possibly in a rage?

Last but not least, I can’t say enough about TK’s expressions, with his eyes, especially, in that last scene. His panicked and worried look when he said "I told you not to be where I can’t see you”, the "Ah I found you" followed by "why did you defy me look" to MN, his surprised and ‘oh, no’ look when SW hugged MN and finally, that very intense stare when SW declared MN his woman. How many different emotions can a man express in less than 2 minutes, all with his eyes? JGS, I applaud you.

Honestly, I don't know where to begin this was another great episode. JGS and PSH are amazing you can really feel the emotions and characters they are portraying. Their had to be a decent amount of chemistry between these two before they even started acting.

UEE is also doing a great job, because we are really disliking her character. I have a feeling that she will get hers. I think President Ahn will be the one to get her, because ultimately she is messing with his business. I just don't think he will be happy when he realizes what’s been going on.

The ending was really great, JYH was the only in a position to take the heat. I believe he did it to protect PSH and ANJELL not to further his romantic goals. He knows that it is futile, PSH loves JGS, though unhappy about it, he can still protect the person he cares for selflessly.

OMGG Wednesday is a long way off, and there are only 6 episodes left, what then reruns!!!! This addiction has become a sad, maddening thing!!

THANKS EVER SO MUCH, JB!!!!

"Anyway, what I found a bit excessive was how almost every character likes to talk aloud to themselves i.e. TK, Heyi talk a LOT to themselves. hahaha."

I know right? Haha.. I actually realised this when SW was waiting outside of MN's room (at 5am, I must add) and saw TK leaving to get some much deserved sleep. And I was wondering to myself, was SW really standing there the whole night, and was he really talking to himself, alone, so early in the morning?

And that's when I noticed almost all of them talk to themselves when they are alone in a scene. LOL Of course its important (or not we as viewers wont understand what they are thinking/feeling) but I agree that at times, its a bit excessive.

Um, he buys her clothes because he feels responsible for her? Sorry, don't buy it :-) Besides which, she already has the girl-clothes she went to see Mother Superior in. Never mind, it was a sweet gesture, and not everything has to make sense. If we wanted sense, we'd be watching a Discovery Channel documentary, not this, right?! ;-)

Yes, talking to oneself is a disease that strikes all in K-Drama Land. It *is* kinda funny! If people behaved like that in real life they'd be put away. [Serendipity poses in middle of room, puts finger in air, declaims, "I wonder what to do next? Ah! I know! I shall make life interesting!" Serendipity's Partner reaches quietly for the phone to call the Funny Farm.] But it's so helpful to us who want to know what's going on, I think we can overlook the awkwardness.

“I told you not to be where I can’t see you!”
That line totally killed me. /flails arms.
JGS is great actor, especially with his eyes. They express so much emotion.
And his interactions with the pig-rabbit is just so precious.
I am also loving the symbolism with the water, tea and juice. Oh, Jeremy, my dear child. You are unique, "Then do we have a congratulations party?"
I cannot get enough of this darn drama. Thurs and Fri come so painstakingly slow.

@223 Nano & 217 FT
LOL actually when they were talking to themselves, I found it quite reflective of what I do in RL so it didn't bother me much (although perhaps they should have had more "thinking aloud" scenes instead of having the actors verbalise everything themselves?).

JB, thanks for the recaps (I got here late because I was determined to watch the episode first). IT WAS FANTASTIC and I'm dying to know what happens next! Everyone here in A.N.Jell really stole my heart - even Jeremy! He wasn't really one of my favourite characters, since obviously Taekyung's there first, BUT THIS EPISODE WAS SO....SQUEEEEE. I CONCUR.

Sad to know there's only going to be 6 more episodes, but at the same time I'm really looking forward to it! I just wonder if they're ever going to bring the real Mi Nam back - would be interesting to see what happens if they do. (I'm kind of hoping they do, because it's a bit ridiculous the way he's been gone forever). Mi Nam needs to come back and do some protecting of Mi Nyeo NOW! (Then again, she's got TK, SW and Jeremy to do that for her!)

It's eerie...I got in a "feud" with a friend who's pro Shin-woo. She argued that I loved TK because the writers made it that way, that my "blah feelings" for Shin-woo weren't because of his bland acting, but because of the writers' disinterested plot.

I wanted Shin-woo to be more important, but I figured it was mainly his fault that he hadn't won me over. Well, now he just got waaay more important! During the fever scenes, I actually felt a twinge for him in his thwarted attempts to care for Mi-nyeo. Still, I think he missed the boat with me, too.

The last scene won't resolve our debate, either. Tae-kyung's intense glare from a distance did more for my heart than Shin-woo clutching Mi-nyeo against him and claiming her as his.

Anyway....how sexy is Tae-kyung's little stomp of frustration when Mi-nyeo refuses to go the hospital?? That's right, it's Super-Sexy.

Owh. Just noticed that pig-rabbit is now having its own seat, previously it was seated on MN's blanket & pillows. And now it has it's own chair! I might be thinking too much (arent we all), but TK gesture of putting the pigrabbit on a special chair shows how he has placed MN in a special place in his heart though sometimes I just what to slap him on his butt... er... head and told him to wake up from his denial (he's slowly going there anyway). I can't help but over analysing everything coz the the drama so many clues in the little things, and it was fun to find them (or read them from other comments)

Oh and I meant the last scene won't convince my friend that Tae-kyung is superior. She'll just say, like JB noted, that the whole culmination of nuances and layers in the preceding plot is something that Shin-woo alone cannot defeat.

Phffft. Whatever. He's supposed to be a layer, too.

I got distracted by that hospital scene. Tae-kyung's glare in the last part reminded me of it. SO HOT.

I love wednesday and thrusday . The lime incident was so funny. Look at Tae-kyung's expression...i laughed so much. Finally Shin-woo's timing was right at the end, when he hugged her to hide her before anyone discovers her true face.
Jeremy. i think he is still confused, his character is so cute. And i love the scene when Tae-kyung and MI-nam were talking about stars and how he said to her to stand somewhere he can see her. That was so sweet.
Somewhere i think that Heyi's character is too evil, messing up with lead character's life. Other than that this drama is really really good. Can't wait till next wednesday and thursday.

All right. Let me just share my thoughts:

1. HY is SO BLOODY DUMB. She doesn't realize that the more she bullies MN, the more TK (and SW) would want to protect her.
2. It's about time SW gets the spotlight. It's such a cliche for the second guy to just stand there and watch the girl he loves be taken by the main guy. I mean, come on. This is something fresh (well for me...I think I have watched way too many dramas)
3. JEREMY! I just love him. The "Do we have to throw a congratulatory party" really cracked the hell out of me. I LOVED IT!
4. Manager Ma! Oh, Manager Ma. Your imagination is quite amusing :)
5. And damn. What a timing. JUST AS WHEN TK IS ABOUT TO ACKNOWLEDGE HIS FEELINGS FOR MN, SW COMES AS THE KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR
6. Because TK is older than MN by like 2 years, I believe that Mo Hwa-ran's great love is MN's dad. Then she happened to meet TK's father. It was mentioned that TK's father is a famous conductor, so maybe because she got way too ambitious, she used TK's dad to get ahead of the game. She then had bun in the oven (my precious Hwang Tae-kyung that is)...and so she was forced to separate with MN's father. MN's father then must have met another singer/woman (doesn't matter at the moment) who happened to be the twins' mother.
7. MN should be forced to return to the house with the rest of the A.N.JELL to quell the situation. Because she's SW's mystery girl, of course, they would want to keep her close.
8. BASED ON THE PICS I SAW...I think TK would play along...help SW cover MN...leave the premises...drive her away...awkward silence...then get far, far, far away...a beach, mountain lodge, perhaps...yeah...
9. When will the real Go Mi-nam show up? I think HY would play a big part on that. SHE IS DESPERATE FOR TK.
10. JAVABEANS, I LOVE YOUR RECAPS :)

I’m not proud to say this but I haven’t really seen the episodes yet. I’ve seen parts of episode 9 and maybe a part of episode 10. Sigh... Thanks JB for your recaps. They saved me.

I had a glimmer of hope when I thought that I finally understood HY’s reason for the fake relationship (as I previously lamented about it in the last couple of episodes).

I said that I had a glimmer of hope because from what I read in JB’s EP9 summary, I finally see that she may have real feelings for TK—attracted to him or something like that. I finally figured out that since she doesn’t know MN’s reason for pretending to be a guy, maybe she thought it was some excuse just to be close to guys (that probably, in her book, is really lame). To top it off, HY is probably pissed because the unworthy person who is pretending to be a guy gets treated/pampered more than her.

I am assuming now that what finally set HY off was the fact that TK’s ‘protection’ is now turning to ‘love/like’? (Guys, feel free to correct me on this)

But after reading EP 10, I feel like I am back to my initial position of not understanding her. Maybe it’s because she mentioned that she doesn’t want to break whatever she has with TK. Now that got me thinking again: what does she want from the relationship anyway? What does she want to happen?

I’m sorry if I seem like over analyzing this. I admit I’m a bit logical in life so when something doesn’t fit, I try to understand it. Or, the answer is in the episodes and I just have to find the opportunity to watch the episodes! Or, HY is the only character in YB that I don't understand! Oh well...

I do hope though that HY gets tired from doing all of her schemes and realize that being a b*tch is not the way to a man’s heart. From my argument, I’m not even sure if having TK is her ultimate goal. Maybe exposing MN is her ultimate goal. Maybe her ultimate goal from all this is to have the fake relationship with TK forever! Whatever…

Side Note: The pig-rabbit experiment-MN finding the doll was adorable! JB, when I first saw your opening snapshot of EP9 (TK holding the stuffed animals) I was like, what the hell is that?! But you have a great eye for choosing your screen caps. That truly is a great shot. Two- thumbs up!! (MN style..:))

Omg, I LOVED THIS EPISODE. it's crazy, breathtaking and everything.

I really need episode 11 now, seriously. Oh the agony of having to wait one whole week!

THE RATINGS, PLEASE PICK UP PLEASE! Come come come come come, ratings go up up up up up up up. People, do this chant 10 times everyday!

Hope the ratings would go up, the actors, especially JANG GEUN SUK, would get an award for this role because he is just so freaking awesome at portraying Hwang Tae Kyung.

"all I can see is the moon" ,"don't be where I can't see you." Omg I'm going to compile all his quotes after the whole series!!!!!

And only 6 episodes left!! This is crazy! I can't imagine the days without You're Beautiful, it will be like minam without tae kyung (or tae kyung without minam, whichever way), taekyung with night blindness, minam without her "star". Okay I will stop using analogies/similes, you get what I mean!!!!!!

Great episode. I don't see how I can wait till next week. Rewatching the subbed ep 10 , reading the comments on this thread and JB's YB news updates will be my methadone clinic.

@Fan--love your insight. You are/were an English major right? The discussion on the balcony about the stars and the double meaning of not being able to see in the dark was so Shakespearean as well as the twins motif which reminded me of Tweltfh Night.

In response to your Tennyson I thought of this poem by Robert Herrickson.

GATHER ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old time is still a-flying :
And this same flower that smiles to-day
To-morrow will be dying.
. . .
Then be not coy, but use your time,
And while ye may go marry :
For having lost but once your prime
You may for ever tarry.
