You’re Beautiful: Episode 14

Once again, we run the gamut of emotions from light to heavy, which I always find to be a welcome thing when a drama heads to its more serious moments. Yes, some of the conflicts amp up in this episode, but it also has more of its trademark goofy parody sequences to lighten the in-between moments. The threesome parody in this episode is possibly my favorite Hong sisters parody ever.

SONG OF THE DAY

EPISODE 14 RECAP

Tae-kyung is about to tell Mi-nyo something, starting, “Go Mi-nam, I… you…” But then, he’s interrupted by excited fans, who wave excitedly as they arrive in buses.

Tae-kyung is annoyed with the interruption, particularly since Mi-nyeo takes it as her cute to excuse herself. Explaining that she’ll act as though he’s just sending her off, she starts to leave.

He holds her back, saying, “Hear me out first.” Leaning in close, he says, “I like you.”

(Omo!)

Having gotten that out in the open, he lets her go, but now she’s so shocked that she stands in a daze. As the fangirls swarm around him, Mi-nyeo wonders if she heard right. She thinks, “I wish the world would quiet down so I can hear the soft words in my memory.”

She thinks back, confirming that he had indeed said those words, and suddenly the world around her is all roses and butterflies. LITERALLY.

As this finally sinks in, Mi-nyeo starts giggling out loud in glee, exultant. She doesn’t see Tae-kyung sitting in his car a short distance away, who smiles and says, “So she did hear me properly.”

On the plane, Shin-woo looks at the empty seat next to him and tells himself, “I knew she wouldn’t come. But since I told her that I’ve already begun [to have feelings], that’s enough.”

Almost immediately, photos pop up online of Tae-kyung and Mi-nam at the airport. Heyi is annoyed — why would Tae-kyung go to the airport to see Mi-nam? — and displeased. Meanwhile, may I take the moment to point out the HILARITY of the top 3 online star searches, as seen in Heyi’s web browser??

  1. Dong Bang Single
  2. So Nyeo Junior
  3. Super Shidae

Tae-kyung gives Mi-nyeo a ride home. Mi-nyeo wonders how to handle herself around him, given his declaration: “Should I tell him that I heard him and give him permission too?” However, she imagines him issuing a gruff response, and considers trying the opposite instead — she could say she didn’t hear what he said and ask him to repeat it. But she imagines him sneering at that, “You didn’t hear? Then cancel it!”

Mi-nyeo decides to accept his statement gratefully, and figures that she doesn’t need to hear him say it anyway, because “if I hear him say that he likes me again, my heart may burst.”

Tae-kyung breaks the silence by suggesting they grab something to eat, and asks if she likes spaghetti. Mi-nyeo hiccups. Puzzled, he repeats the question, and she hiccups again. Testing out a theory, Tae-kyung enunciates clearly, “Do you LIKE charcoal-grilled kalbi? Do you LIKE naengmyun? What about sushi, do you LIKE it? I LIKE sushi.” She hiccups every time he says the word LIKE.

He prods her to answer (which is his way of getting her to say she likes him back). Mi-nyeo answers, “I really, really like [it] very, very much.”

Sushi lunch. Mi-nyeo takes all the shrimp and crab off his plate because of his allergies, happy to eat them. When Tae-kyung tells her to give him two pieces in exchange for the ones she took, her face falls — she was counting on eating them. So Tae-kyung relents and tells her to eat them all, so as not to lose points. (“Why is it so tough to preserve my score?”)

When Mi-nyeo brings up the issue of photos from the airport being made public, Tae-kyung answers that he’s not very worried. There’s nothing scandalous about him seeing her off, although he is aware that fans often create stories out of nothing. He adds (with a perfectly straight face), “There are a lot of love stories that don’t even feature women.”

He’s talking, yup, about fanfic. (I love it!) In what is my favorite giggly sequence this episode (possible this drama?), he explains, “Most of them are a love triangle between me, Shin-woo, and Jeremy.”

LULZ! Imaginations run wild in his exaggerated examples: two hands cover Fanfic Tae-kyung’s eyes and he asks hopefully, “Shin-woo?” The hands move aside to reveal a hurt Jeremy, who says, “You’re always looking for Shin-woo.” Holding Tae-kyung’s hand to his chest, Fanfic Jeremy says, “You’re inside my heart.”

At that moment, a glass shatters — Fanfic Shin-woo has walked in and seen this intimate moment. Angry at being thus replaced by Jeremy, he vows, “I’m going to destroy you both!”

(OMG. I love that the writers work in details incorporating some of the more ridiculous aspects of idol life. First Sung-chan’s ridiculous English, and now yaoi fanfiction.)

Jeremy logs on to read the latest stories online, getting a kick out of them. He’s waiting at the broadcast station where he is going to make a surprise cameo appearance at the end. He plans to use this as his platform for telling Mi-nam how he feels in the form of a song.

However, his web browsing leads him to the airport photos of Mi-nam and Tae-kyung, which makes him wonder what’s going on. With the question dangling in the air, he can’t concentrate until he confirms the truth with Tae-kyung, and heads out. He only has an hour before he has to make his appearance, and if he doesn’t make it there will be trouble.

Hoon-yi sees Tae-kyung and Mi-nyeo arriving at the agency together, and gapes. Why did Tae-kyung interfere and go to the airport? A little triumphantly, Tae-kyung tells Hoon-yi, “Take a good look.” He whirls Mi-nyeo around and hugs her, prompting her to press her nose. Having proved his point to the manager, he heads off to work.

Hoon-yi can’t believe it — so her pig-nose was because of Tae-kyung? She asks anxiously, “Does he know what that means?” Hoon-yi can’t understand why, of all the people in the world, she’d fall for mean ol’ Tae-kyung. She answers, “At some point, I started to feel electric shocks.”

Jeremy arrives in time to catch the end of this conversation. Staring at Mi-nyeo intently, he asks, “Do you like Tae-kyung hyung?” She’s a little surprised by the blunt question, but nods. Jeremy’s face twists to hear it, and he runs off.

When they learn that Jeremy is still missing from the studio, Hoon-yi and Mi-nyeo try to track him down. They have no luck, but Mi-nyeo remembers the bus and follows her hunch to the bus stop.

She sees Jeremy sitting alone in an empty bus and races after it. She climbs onboard and starts to approach Jeremy, who looks up and glares: “This is my bus. Get off.” Seeing how upset Jeremy is, Mi-nyeo feels horrible as he continues, with wounded confusion:

Jeremy: “When I thought you were a guy, I was okay with it. When I found out you were a girl, I was okay with it. But if you like Tae-kyung hyung, I can’t be okay with it. Why? Why wasn’t it me? I told you about my treasure bus, and I let you close to Jolie, and I was going to sing a song only for you. Why don’t you like me?”

They sit in silence on opposite sides of the bus for a while. Jeremy answers a call from the studio, and agrees to sing his song over the phone instead. He’s chosen a cheerful children’s tune called “Such Good Words.”

As Jeremy introduces his selection, he looks over at Mi-nyeo, directing his words to her: “These good words were so precious to me that I saved them up. If I keep them inside too much, they turn into words I can’t say again. But I hope they’re not disagreeable words, useless words, or words that make you sad.” Knowing he’s talking to her, Mi-nyeo gestures that no, she doesn’t think that.

He starts to sing: “I love you, these words are such good words. When our family goes to bed, they give and receive these words. I love you, these words are such good words. These are words Jeremy wants to give to her.”

When he finishes, she tells him, “They’re very good words.” He answers, “But you can’t accept them. Right, Go Mi-nam?” That’s true, and Mi-nyeo apologizes.

Jeremy tells her frankly, “I can’t say it’s okay right now. When this bus returns to its place, then it’ll become okay.” When the bus rolls to a stop, he tells her, “When I get off this bus, I’m going to return to being the happy Jeremy. Forget everything I said here. If you don’t forget them, I can’t return. Got it, Go Mi-nam?”

True to his word, when he steps off the bus, he puts on a cheery face and talks in his usual energetic way. They head off to eat ice cream together, with only the fleetingest of looks betraying that Jeremy isn’t as happy as he’s acting.

Tae-kyung and his producer meet with a former singer who once knew Go Jae-hyun. The singer explains that Go Jae-hyun was a nice, ordinary guy who had dated Hwa-ran. The relationship fell apart when she went to another man, and afterward he got together with another woman, who was preparing to be a singer herself. Not knowing of Tae-kyung’s personal connection to this story, he insinuates that Hwa-ran had quite a lot of men in her day.

Tae-kyung mutters to himself, “That grand love sounds quite messy when discussed in other people’s words.”

Hwa-ran hates the idea of “that woman’s daughter” and her son being cozy, and decides to do something about it. She presents Mi-nyeo with a gift — a dress — and says meaningfully, “I picked right, didn’t I?”

Hwa-ran assures M-nyeo not to worry — she doesn’t want to mess with her. Mi-nyeo asks Hwa-ran to pretend not to know until her brother returns soon, and that her bandmates are not to blame. Hwa-ran concludes, “They knew and covered for you, and were your friends. You did something very dangerous. It’s complicated to explain to you, but Hwang Tae-kyung and I have a special personal relationship. Be careful not to get involved and make things complicated.”

Mi-nyeo promises, “No matter what happens, I will make sure not to cause trouble for Hwang Tae-kyung. I cannot let him be hurt.” Hwa-ran replies, “From his perspective, it would have been better not getting involved with you.”

Mi-nyeo chalks Hwa-ran’s statements up to being a protective mother, but still, this whole situation makes her uneasy. She can’t let Tae-kyung know that she knows about his relationship with his mother — he was so sad on his birthday that she couldn’t bring herself to say it — but feigning ignorance means she’s caught in the middle: “It feels like I’m lying to him, and it doesn’t feel good.”

I appreciate the way the writers turn the situation from serious to funny in a natural way: After everything that’s happened, Mi-nyeo has had quite a tiring day. However, Tae-kyung doesn’t know this and wonders why she hasn’t called him all day. He concedes, “Well, I did tell her not to inconvenience me, so she must have spent all day waiting.”

To his surprise, she answers the phone in a sleepy voice. Disappointed (and offended), Tae-kyung retorts, “Forget it! Keep sleeping, you sleepyheaded Pig-Rabbit!”

Not satisfied to end things on that note, he calls her out and takes her to the movie theater. When she warns him that she may fall asleep, he insists that he didn’t call her out to watch the movie (i.e., as a date) — he just needs a guide in the dark. He didn’t need HER, he needed her EYES. He orders her onward: “Go Mi-nam’s Eyes, guide me.”

He takes her hand as she leads him inside the darkened theater, but balks at her seating choice and orders her to move. He complains at her next choice, too — but it’s clear to us that he just likes holding her hand and is prolonging the moment.

We can be sure of that because he doesn’t strictly need her hand-holding — at one moment he forgets himself and starts to lead her instead. Surprised, Mi-nyeo asks whether he can see. He clears his throat and says, “Go Mi-nam’s Eyes, eyes can’t talk.”

Afterward, they step out on a deck overlooking the city, and the lights are so bright that she can’t see the stars. Noting that he can’t ever see the stars, she breathes on the glass and draws a star in the mist. Seeing another star — a lamp — she comments, “Even when it’s not a dark night, there are a lot of stars around us. After I stop acting as Go Mi-nam and go far away, I’ll search for stars and think of you.” After her brother returns, it would be better for her to be at a distance.

Tae-kyung answers lightly, “Go looking for those stars. I’ll check up on you to ask how many you’ve found. I’ll be expecting you to see a lot.” She thinks to herself, “But the star I like the best is one I can’t take with me, so I’ll miss it a lot.”

Tae-kyung promises to show her more stars and motions her closer — then holds up his knuckle. If he were to give her a noogie, she should see five more stars.

Mi-nyeo wonders worriedly if he would really do it, and braces herself as he pulls back, winding up for a big one…

…but instead, he swoops in for a kiss.

(I don’t know if there were spoilers for this kiss but if there were I AM SO GLAD I didn’t know about them. Full squealing effect preserved!)

Shin-woo returns from his trip to Busan, and Mi-nyeo feels sorry and uncomfortable around him. He has brought back a gift for her from his mother, because he couldn’t bring himself to tell her the full story. He doesn’t expect Mi-nyeo to accept it, but wanted to show her his mother’s gesture.

The time away seems to have been good for Shin-woo, because he talks with more assertion now. He tells her that he’d been a good hyung to her, but their relationship lacked tension. Now, he intends to add a sense of pressure to her, which sounds bad but means merely that he’s going to take a new direction: “I’ve stepped back until now because I’ve been comforting you. Now I’m going to step forward and comfort myself.”

Planning progresses for Mi-nam’s solo album, and Hoon-yi announces with great excitement that the real Mi-nam is returning the day before the showcase. Jeremy wonders what the real Mi-nam is like, and gets back the answer that Mi-nam may look like his sister but his personality is different: “He has Tae-kyung’s charisma, Shin-woo’s softness, and Jeremy’s brightness.”

Although this should be good news, each member has his own subdued reaction to it.

Hoon-yi is so psyched to have his Mi-nam troubles nearing their end that he lets slip to the stylist that Mi-nyeo and Tae-kyung like each other. The stylist had believed that Heyi and Tae-kyung were dating, so now she tells Heyi that she knows the truth.

Heyi’s reaction to news is sheer shock: “They’re for real?” This pushes her over the edge, and she bursts out, “How can that he set me aside and go for her? I really hate Go Mi-nam!” Shoving items off the counter, she sobs angrily.

Per their half-joking “agreement,” Mi-nyeo shows Tae-kyung pictures of all the stars she found today: a star-shaped shirt pin and a tomato stem, for example.

He teases her for only finding three, so she responds bashfully, “Right now, the star I like the most is with me every day.” Then, afraid she said too much, she points up to the sun as though saying she meant the star in the sky. Not him, of course!

He plays along, “Ahh, that star you said is the coolest. Where is that?” Mi-nyeo doesn’t want to admit the truth, so she says, “You can’t see stars anyway. You don’t have to know.”

Tae-kyung offers to watch her favorite star with her tonight, and they set a date. He wonders if they’ll be able to see any in this weather, but decides, “I don’t need those stars anyway. I’m the star she likes best.”

Sung-chan takes Mi-nyeo to meet the producer, who has finished work on Hwa-ran’s remake song. As she listens to the song playing in the background, knowing this was her father’s work, she decides to tell Tae-kyung about her father tonight.

Spying a star-shaped ashtray, she picks it up as the two men gossip about the songwriter and Hwa-ran having been lovers. Shocked, Mi-nyeo lets the ashtray fall from her grasp, and it shatters on the ground. (Ah, the familiar destruction of a symbolic trinket to foreshadow impending troubles! This has been used in more than one Hong sisters drama before, and is frankly a tactic I could do without.)

Not knowing that Mi-nyeo has broken her star (in a symbolic gesture), Tae-kyung takes out a star-shaped necklace wherein the star is meant to represent him. He plans to give it to her later, and (very adorably) taunts Pig-Rabbit with it, saying, “This isn’t yours.”

Mi-nyeo asks her aunt whether her father was really involved with Hwa-ran. Aunt Mi-ja hadn’t told her “because I thought it would upset you to know your father left your mother for Mo Hwa-ran. You were looking so hard for your mother. If you knew that she’d been abandoned and died alone, you might hate your father.”

Mi-nyeo is devastated and still half-disbelieving, so she decides to confirm the truth. She heads to the hotel, where Hwa-ran’s assistant informs her of Mi-nyeo’s arrival. Deciding to get the truth all out at once, Hwa-ran calls Tae-kyung to summon him too, saying, “It’s someone you know. I want to confirm it before it causes trouble for you. It’s a girl named Go Mi-nyeo.”

Hoping that the information is false, Mi-nyeo asks Hwa-ran to confirm that she and Go Jae-hyun were just friends. Hwa-ran answers, “We weren’t just friends. We loved each so much that we can’t forget each other for the rest of our lives.”

Shocked at his mother’s revelation, Tae-kyung bursts into Mi-nyeo’s room looking for some proof. Spying the photo of the young twins with their father, his eye then falls on the autographed photo of Hwa-ran. Mi-nyeo’s handwritten note wishes him a happy birthday — and although that’s not exactly incriminating, it makes him wonder why she wouldn’t have given it to him on his birthday.

Mi-nyeo isn’t very impressed to hear of Hwa-ran’s grand love, and says, “You abandoned and hurt the person you should have treated as the most precious in the world. I can’t believe when a person like that speaks of love. That’s not love.”

Hwa-ran laughs: “You say the same thing as your mother did. She ignored me and didn’t believe your father would return to me.” Mi-nyeo insists, “My father had no reason to love a person like you.” Hwa-ran holds up the CD as proof — he wrote the song for her, and even her mother acknowledged it.

Hwa-ran: “Do you want to insist it’s not true? My son Tae-kyung may not have understood, but he acknowledged it. That’s why he remade this song. I told you I saw you once as children. If your father hadn’t died early, I could have become your mother. Tae-kyung knows that, too. …But you didn’t tell him you’re Jae-hyun’s daughter, did you? Does he know that you know he’s my son? If you didn’t say that, you must not have told him that I know you’re a girl.”
Mi-nyeo: “I didn’t mean to deceive him.”
Hwa-ran: “Tell him that. See if he believes you.”

Tae-kyung bursts in, half-incredulous and half-reproachful to see Mi-nyeo standing with his mother. Hwa-ran makes things worse by turning Mi-nyeo around to face Tae-kyung, and announcing, “This girl is the daughter of the man I loved. She says she didn’t intend to deceive you.”

Tae-kyung walks out without a word. Seeing Mi-nyeo’s reaction, Hwa-ran asks, “Is the reason you wanted to deny it because of my son?” She tells Mi-nyeo to recognize the truth and give up.

Reporter Kim works on his story about Mi-nyeo and Shin-woo’s relationship, but something is niggling at the back of his mind. Every time Mi-nyeo made an appearance, Mi-nam was absent. It’s the Clark Kent principle, and he puts two and two together.

He tries to confirm this with Heyi, but she no longer wants to be involved with A.N.JELL. To which he responds, “Go Mi-nam and Go Mi-nyeo are the same person, right? Is he a guy, or a girl?”

Working off this assumption, the reporter tells Sung-chan that he wants to delay printing the story until he can interview Mi-nam and Mi-nyeo at the same time. Sung-chan asks Shin-woo to handle this with the twins.

As Shin-woo steps out of his meeting with Sung-chan, he sees Tae-kyung stomping upstairs, with Mi-nyeo following close behind and pleading for him to listen.

Tae-kyung asks when she found out about his mother. Hearing her answer, he says, “So there was a reason that whenever I felt upset about my mother, you showed up.” Has she also been meeting with his mother for a while? He adds, “My mother loved your father so much she abandoned me and wanted to be your mother. Did you hear that?”

Mi-nyeo starts to talk, but he cuts off her explanation: “She said you were close enough that she used to bring you cookies. Do you remember? Try getting along well with her from now on. But don’t involve me.”

She holds his arm and pleads for him to listen. He throws her arm aside, snapping, “Don’t be where I can see you. I don’t want to see you.”

He storms off, leaving Mi-nyeo to crumple to the ground in sobs. But he doesn’t get far, and wipes at his own tears as he listens to Mi-nyeo crying a level below — as Shin-woo watches from across the lobby.

COMMENTS

Half the time, I find Hwa-ran to be such an excessively hateful person that it’s hard to find the truth of her character — is she TOO awful to be a credible villain? The best villains show complexity, and don’t explain their reasons in one-dimensional, simplistic terms like “I loved him that much.”

The other half of the time, I think that there must be more behind her actions and find her fascinating. If you see her as a supremely selfish and weak woman, she’s more intriguing than if you were to write her off as a stock villainness. For instance, take her desire to separate the couple. Initially, she sees Mi-nam as an extension of his/her father and looks upon him approvingly. But then, Hwa-ran sees flashes of Mi-nyeo’s mother in her, and therefore finds the idea of that girl with her son to be abhorrent.

It’s not that she loves Tae-kyung so much to want him to be with a good woman — Tae-kyung is just an extension of herself. She looks at the world through a twisted perspective, like looking through a fisheye lens: she and her love are at the center, and everything else is skewed around to fit the frame, shoved off to the side.

We can’t leave out mention of Lee Hong-ki‘s fabulous bus scene, can we? GREAT SCENE. Like with Jung Yong-hwa yesterday, the beauty of the acting wasn’t in the big, dramatic emotions, but the way both guys found the quiet little beats to twist your heart into a painful knot. He didn’t rage at Mi-nyeo, but asked plaintively why she didn’t like him back when he liked her so much. We know it doesn’t work that way, but Jeremy’s heart has its own straightforward way of working.

The way he sings his song is just killer, because you can’t fake that, folks. You can fake crying to some extent, but cry-singing isn’t something you can reproduce authentically without actually going there, and Lee Hong-ki goes there. Ow.

I have to give mad props to Park Shin-hye for rounding out the bus scene so well even though she hardly said a thing. I love that she respects his pain to give him his space when they sit in silence, and I love the look she gives him to assure him that his song isn’t worthless. I wondered if it was out of character for Mi-nyeo to understand so readily that Jeremy liked her — when she was so dense with Shin-woo and Tae-kyung — but I suppose Jeremy was the most straightforward in saying, straight-out, that he liked her.

Criticisms:

The Hong sisters do comedy and angst very well, and manage to mix the two so that most of the time the drama doesn’t get too sunk down in the melodrama. However, I think in every one of their dramas except (surprisingly?) Fantasy Couple, their Big Misunderstanding has been just a wee bit too much for my tastes. Hong Gil Dong wasn’t so bad, but I recall that at the time, the Big Misunderstanding in My Girl closely echoed the setup of Delightful Girl Chun-hyang, and that was a complaint for some fans of My Girl. Instead of feeling like a natural development in the couple’s romance, it felt like it was forced conflict, and it didn’t quite ring true. But I’m sure the Hong sisters took complaints to heart, because when people assumed they’d use a similar structure in Fantasy Couple, they announced that they wouldn’t. Thankfully, that drama avoided a time leap, and I hope this one does too.

To take a look at this episode in a critical light, I’d say we’re dealing more with forced conflict than natural development. Tae-kyung’s response at the end is probably understandable given the context, and I think he’s right in feeling hurt. But he’s overreacting, and his negative opinion of Mi-nyeo is one that would take five minutes of explanation to dispel. All he has to do is calm down and hear how she came to find out the truth, and I think we’d be good. She was wrong in hiding the truth from him, but even so, honestly this is hardly a big enough offense to rend asunder a Love That Is Meant To BeKDRAMA.

To play devil’s advocate, we can also take an apologist standpoint. Tae-kyung has put Mi-nyeo on something of a pedestal, since she has been so good and so forgiving this whole series long. Hearing that Mi-nyeo actively deceived him must shake his entire faith in her. It doesn’t help that it was his hated mother who uttered a defense of Mi-nyeo (“She didn’t mean to deceive you”). Coming from those lips, it sounds like an excuse rather than the truth. And worst of all, his mother issues are his blind spot, so he reacts to the emotion rather than sorting out the facts. It may be that Mi-nyeo meant well, but he sees her standing with the mother who abandoned him, who all but declared she’d rather have raised Mi-nyeo than Tae-kyung. To know that Mi-nyeo knew the truth and was still able to treat his mother civilly, well, that feels like a betrayal. Almost like she chose his mother over him.

It’s not expressly logical, but such is the heat of the moment. (Honestly, I don’t entirely buy the apologist argument, but I thought I’d put it out there.)

Thanks, JB.

Do you guys share the same opinion as I do that... JGS would have nailed it, fitted the character to a T if he performed the role Jun Pyo in BOF? Sorry, everytime I see JGS, I can't help but exclaim to myself that I could have continued watching BOF if he's the main guy and JYW as the second lead... these guys are better actors. :-) See JGS facial expression when he gets mad and excited.Peace.

Thanks Javabeans!
Jeremy was like Hangyul in Coffee Prince, only his love is unrequited.
TK is logical and analytical the whole series. I have faith in this drama that I somehow expect that the beginning of next episode would be focused on TK putting logic in to the madness.
2 more episodes, 1 more week and then the withdrawal begins. :(

By the way, what did TK tell MN while he was kissing her?

Some criticism from me:
Lee Hongki was just wonderful in the bus scene. But I feel that the essence of that scene is also forced. We've seen Jeremy's feelings for Minam, but it's always taken a backseat compared to Shinwoo and Taekyung. So, I felt WTF when suddenly Jeremy went all emo because he's heartbroken. It felt like that scene was only intended to give Jeremy a closure for his feelings.

I'm in the former with regards to Mo Hwaran. She presents perhaps the biggest plot (or conflict) device in the drama. She's like "President Byun finding Choonhyang" or "Grandpa ordering Yoorin out of the family/Gongchan". It's bound to happen, but because writers have been using these frequently, they just lose meaning.

Thank you JB for great recaps, again!
If there is consistency, it's that we can always count on your wonderful recaps and analysis!

My two cents about TK in the last scene, although I have not seen it yet (as usual, waiting for subbed version to come out), is that it reminded me of episode 2, when MN goes to his room to apologize, but he is still so "upset" that he says harsh things to her. Then, in the bathroom, he says she should have waited until he calmed down.
I think TK is someone with strong/volatile emotions, he gets angry fast, but he is not mean. So I hope he just needs to calm down, and then fix things up with MN. He is hurt, his trust in women must really be shattered by now (MHR, HY, and now MN), but hopefully MN will be able to get through to him again. I anticipate a chase to win her back, which he should, as so far he's mostly been on the receiving end of her love. He did things for her before, but at the time it was not out of his love for her.
Can't wait until he knows the full truth, can't wait for what he'll do to redeem himself.
And, I think Jeremy is my second favorite! I really like how the Hong sisters wrote his character, he is refreshing!
And poor PSH, she looks really tired, so much crying, she has to deal with 3 men, she has to do 3x the work (crying, comforting, conflicts...). At least, she only has to kiss one of them :-)

I'll admit, Jeremy wasn't really on my radar (even with sweet moments on the magic bus and his cuteness overload), but his crying-singing scene was amazing! His scene was more heartbreaking than Shin-woo's singing (not to mention Hong-ki's singing was completely unaltered). Not many people can sing, and not many people can cry, yet Hong-ki did both fantastically well! Leave it to F.T. Island's lead vocalist to give me goosebumps and a slight pain in the heart :)

That's right Javabeans. MHR really doesn't want to give the kids the opportunity that she never had with Go Jae-hyun and now, all hell break loose, just because Hwang Tae-kyung and Go Mi-nyeo are in love. MHR just cannot accept that fact. She's selfish.

And Jeremy? Oh, Jeremy. He's totally dense, but still he managed to tell Mi-nyeo how he feels...

Gosh, cannot wait for Eps 15 and 16...

Thanks for an awesome recap, JB :)

oh yes! i just have to give Lee Hongki 2 thumbs up (if possible, even my toes LOL) he was just so good in that bus scene that you start tearing up without you realizing it. and i agree with you, javabeans! Park Shin Hye did amazing too, with barely any dialogue, ultimately just reacting to Hongki's acting. kudos to those 2!

and Jang Guen Suk! i've always loved him & his acting, and this drama just leveled it up to something close to obssession LOL! he just gave me a big rollercoaster of emotions with this episode! making me giddy with the confession & movie theater scenes, made me laugh my a$$ off at that fanfic, making me scared and cry at that confrontation scene with Hwara & Minyeo.... *sighs* i hope he wins an award at one of those acting awards at the end of the year. he deserves it!

HONGKI's BUS SCENE (in my opinion) was the BEST SCENE EVER!!! for seriously, the cry-singing BROKE MY HEART OMG.

btw the audio rip you put up seems to be a bit off, you might want to do it again?

thank you for the speedy recap javabeans!! and i agree about the conflict being somewhat forced, but i've become used to all kdramas having an eventual happy ending that i'm not worried. but i guess it's the principle of the thing!

i first submitted a comment before reading the recap, and now i have to say...

i really liked how this episode tied everything up. sounds weird, but for me it did. the trailer for this episode felt so grandiose - like they were doing too many things in one episode and i thought there would be too many loose ends, but from the looks of it, it's not so much a big deal.

the shinwoo topic is pretty much done. yes, shinwoo may do something to comfort mi-nyeo, but i don't think he's going to do much. and for jeremy, it's semi-resolved in that he's not going to pursue her - he'll just deal with his feelings alone. it would have killed me if there were more back-and-forth relations between the love triangle - that would be dragging the series. the fact that everything is out in the open - everyone admitted their feelings and acknowledged it - eases my mind a lot more.

no matter what shinwoo or jeremy do, i don't think they're going to fight tae-kyung too much. the problem between TK and MN may just resolve itself naturally like it did in coffee prince - where YEH and GY made up on their own without others interfering and jumping in to "save the girl" or something.

at least, that is what i HOPE will happen.

glad to see that heyi doesn't show up too much. she is definitely a good actress to be so completely grating on my nerves.

i think there are just two problems left to resolve: the parental issue and the minam/minyeo interview with the reporter. i put heyi with the latter problem, and i actually WANT her to be evil. i really want her to tell the truth to the reporter, because i just WANT her to be punished! i don't want her to redeem herself and think, oh i should just let them go and so i'll refuse to answer the reporter. i want her to say "yes, they're the same person" and then die a death of public shame.

maybe... maybe 16 episodes really is just enough for this series. any longer, and they are definitely going to draw out the angst.

Yeah, I am a TK/MN shipper but I actually cried seeing Jeremy's scene. It was very sad. His acting is real good at e part. But of course, props to all the actors/actresses in this show! YAB is one of the most engaging korean drama I've watched since long already.

@56 from soompi, i think someone mentioned before the second kiss, TK said to MN not to make the pig rabbit nose this time. something along this line.

I cannot believe YAB is ending! =(

Thank you for the recaps, JB. Yesterday's recaps were especially awesome -- you were on fire with gifs, etc.

I enjoyed today's episode -- watched it live, YAY -- and am relieved that the major conflict, the one with the mother-GMN reveal, is finally here. It took 12 episodes to get here, so that's a relief; although because it took 12 episodes to get here, the punch to gut didn't feel as tight as I thought it would. We knew that this would be how things would unfold -- the final break before the final reconciliation.

Maybe I am a bit tired of the same story lines, but the Yoo Heyi subplot, the mother subplot, and the Shinwoo subplot are all tiresome to me at this point. Frankly, I don't care anymore. Let's get this resolved -- let's move on.

I am not as familiar with the Hong sisters, but it does seem like they run a subplot way too long. Yoo Heyi should have exited the stage at least three episodes ago. There is no reason why she is commanding a center in any scene.

The Shin Woo story should have been over and done with last episode, and because the final scene -- which should have included ONLY Tae Kyung and Mi Nam -- has Shin Woo in it, I feel a sense of dread that the mopey, weepy Shin Woo is going to be back in force in ep 15. What a total downer and waste of time.

The mother story: well, I guess she is a major presence. And I hope that you are right in reading her character as being nuanced; that she hates Go Mi Nam because she reminds her about her mother and that she is so narcissistic, she cannot see anything but herself. I really hope so. If in fact the real story is that Go Mi Nam's father never loved TK"s mother and it had been like a TK-Heyi "love" story, then I will be impressed. But so far, she just seems like a plot device rather than a real human being.

WOW -- I sound so cranky. I am -- but not because of the show. I am still enjoying it. Like I said, I am tired of the same plot lines. I hope the real Go Mi Nam shows up. I wish the real one showed up a few episodes ago, turned out to be a total ass and a tool and jerk. Then we would have had something fresh and new.

Jeremy's breakdown: Hmm...it was superb acting but...it came out of nowhere for me. Does that scene mean that ALL of Jeremy's antics and fun, light demeanor have been act? That underneath it all lies a lot of pain and anger? Seems strange. I had no idea that he liked Go Mi Nam this much. I don't know if I have a clear idea of what happened there.

I LOVE THIS DRAMA SO MUCH. I have not been this fired up about something in so long. Yes, I have been excited about dramas before, but this one lingers with me for days, brings smiles to my face at the most unexpected moments in my daily life. Something about this drama has gotten to me -- I love it.

Thank you, JB!!!

someone brought up a good point on soompi. What if he was acting this way for her? to protect her? I'm not sure - as I'm following the drama closely via dramabeans and not watching the drama itself (addiction beware) but doesn't he know that GMN's mother died because of MHR?

It would suck to be the son of the women who killed your gf's mom. Then again - who knows what might happen? I don't think it's going to be a major misunderstanding. I have a feeling we'll get a quick resolution and not a whole episode of OMG - he hates me!

On a quicknote: Javabeans, no opinion on the Real GMN? He made a brief appearance tonight and I honestly am wondering if PSH can pull off that type of maleness that the brother seems to exude. I know she did well in the quick glimpse, but I wonder if she can pull off more than that on a quick glimpse?

Yeah. Forced conflict, right, that is it. I didn''t like it in Hong Gil Dong ( the way Yi Nok was stabbing Gil Dong's father was scary). But I thought it must be the oriental mentality.
But here it comes again, it annoys me a lot. Isn't there any way ( even in kdrama) to make it sound more credible ? We are living 21 century? This plot written by the sisters seems to be the weakest of all their others to me. It is basicly underdevelopped. Also , the fact that all three guys are in love with one girl limits a lot the side characters, so the concentric circles spreading around the action are too small.
Tae-kyung 's mother somehow reminds me a lot Yuhee- the same envy to another woman: how can he prefer her to me? Looks like all these kids have the same karma as their parents...
Somehow I can't share the ecstasy about Jeremy's burst out. No,Hong Ki is definately capable actor, but was there that much to cry on?
Anyway, I am impatiently waiting for the grand finale. I think JGS will carry it on his shoulders , as he did all the show.

JB again thanks for the recaps!! I love your blog and your insights. I felt sorry for Shinwoo yesterday but I didn't cry. Today, Jeremy made me cry. Among the three I will love to have a boyfriend like Jeremy, so pure, so straightforward and so human. The last sence where TK and MN were crying are also very touching. I just love YAB and do wish that there is a season 2.

thank you for the recap... i'm totally into tk-mn and sw really did shine in the last episode, but i can't help but swoon at how hongki pwned this episode with his bus scene.... my heart felt the emotion... even at the time i was watching that, i didn't understand a word, it was so engrossing and touching... and yeah you were right about that very fleeting look when he put his arm around MN's shoulder, you can see a flicker of sadness in his eyes... great job hongki!

oh... i think the jeremy scene was THE scene of the ep..

regarding TKs reaction.. i am more with expln 1 too. i think he says it out himself right... "my mother left me for you"... i think that was what made go to "switch off" mode. the fact that person (who he has always detested) to blame for the way his life /rel with his mother has turned out is a person he really likes... i dont think he overeacted considering all the abandonment and lonliness... It WOULD be a "stretching" it if he continues to hold things against MN for more than half an hour of screen time..

thanks for the recap..
iwas in full "SQUEEEEE" mode for the theatre scene...

and oooooooooh the parody!! HAHAHA.. even in the fanfic SW doesn get his lovelife straight (pun (un)intended).. hahaha sad, sad, very sad :P

thanks for the recap!!! YAY FOR THE KISS!!!!

omg the ending is so sad, i don't think i can watch it....or maybe i will just take a break every 2 minutes.

I like how Jeremy is a complex character- he is not just happy all the time, he has moments when he feels sad. But I do wish that the hong sisters have delved into Jeremy's character- give him sort of past story. We all know abt Shinwoo and his past with his country accent. i think this series, with so many compelling characters, could have used 20 episodes, to flesh out the characters. and the abandoned-Shinwoo scene has appeared for its 4th? time now? I think this drama is one of the Hong sisters weaker ones in terms of characterization (only Taekyung seems fully-formed to me), but still very addictive and with all the cast members being good, charismatic actors, instead of just a few, like in their other dramas.

and Hwaran is pissing me off in this episode. I hope they really do find out that the song was for MiNyeo's mother and that Hwaran was delusional. Pissed at MiNyeo's father for being such a weak man! I hope he had died from guilt!

And yay, mention of Mi-nam! and wow, he sounds like a combination of all three guys. I hope we get to meet him and hope that his popularity will beat out Taekyung's popularity! wouldn't that be just revenge for dating Minyeo behind his back!

i like your analysis of the big misunderstanding. the big misunderstanding is such a romance story cliche that i have to roll my eyes at it. I will hold off my opinion abt whether the Hong sisters are taking this convention too far to be credible until the next episode. If Taekyung still misunderstands by the halfway point of the next episode, then that's a bit too much, even if he is incredibly bitter about his mother.

I really hope there isn't another time jump to this story. I feel like there are still quite a lot of things to develop and wrap up instead of just skipping a year or two and say everything is fine.

huh... just ONE minute to crash??? Really?? Wow... talk about the combined effect of YB + your wonderful recaps! I am not ashamed to say that I am addicted to both... ;-)
I woke up just 5 minutes ago and here I am already :-P
This time, I need the fix provided by your recap more than ever 'cause I've decided not to watch this ep until eps 15 and 16 are also out (ok, I am lying... I couldn't resist and I've already sneaked a look at some scenes, but I won't watch the ep in its entirety). I know my heart won't be able to handle it. I've come to love these charachters too much to watch them hurt and cry and then wait a whole week to know what happens to them!
So, thank you so much for the recap, JB! You rock!!! ^_^ /

as always, you're the greatest. thanks again for this recap. although, i just want to express that I am very much disappointed on GMN character on this episode coz as you have mentioned. Hong sisters, hasn't give her the chance to say what she wants to say...1st on the scene with Jeremy at the bus and 2nd the last part wherein, when the mother has told her about the affair...they should have atleast given her character some spite to fight back or say something, coz it is a matter of family values and morals..right?again, there is a lot of twist in the storyline and probably the Hong sisters must be hooking up on the blog sites coz the story keep going out on the traditional way of plotlines...and i was so surprise about the kissing scene on the rooftop..never expected that, i've read spoiler somewhere that there will be a kissing scene but it was in episode 13..not on 14 but again, that was nice coz the suspense was too tense that i can't help and squel at the moment...overall, i laughed, cried and mad at the end of the episode..thanks JV for the recap again..

Oh, to add to the big misunderstanding reading that you have, JB:
I am completely persuaded by Tae Kyung's response. It makes perfect sense to me that he would feel betrayed by Go Min Nam. Don't forget how touchy he is about this: he hides his real birthday; he got tense and nervous when he asked (in ep 9?) GMN if she had seen anything (meaning the interaction with his mother), has been hiding why he has not wanted to remake the song.

I think the Hong sisters have set up nicely why Tae Kyung would feel so devastated that Go Mi Nam has seen him so vulnerable, is aware of how her untarnished star is actually really quite tarnished, smudged, and maybe even scratched, and yet has never revealed that knowledge to him.

That is a fairly big lie for someone like GMN to carry -- especially when she comes across as being so utterly dim-witted.

That GMN deliberately kept this kind of information from him is a pretty big breach of trust.

As far the actual subplot -- as I have ranted earlier, I am not persuaded by it at all -- but as far as the unfolding of it and TK's reaction, it makes perfect sense.

Actually, I have been wondering if Mo Hwa Ran abandoned TK, as part of her atonement for her role in making the twins orphaned.

In her perverse perspective of reality, she may have felt that it was only fair for her own child to be without maternal love, since she claims that she was indirectly responsible for the twin's not having a mother.

As for their great love, I've also wondered if it existed only in her eyes. It would be a terrible shock to her if she discovers that her great love was only a fantasy. For which, she's spent and lived her life.

Of all the second leading men, who didn't get the girl, I have never felt as badly for any of them, as I did for Shin Woo.

As always, thanks to Dramabeans for a great recap of a thoroughly enjoyable drama.

"But he’s overreacting, and his negative opinion of Mi-nyeo is one that would take five minutes of explanation to dispel. All he has to do is calm down and hear how she came to find out the truth, and I think we’d be good. She was wrong in hiding the truth from him, but even so, honestly this is hardly a big enough offense to rend asunder a Love That Is Meant To BeKDRAMA."

JB, I hear you. But when has he ever done this before? When has TK ever taken five minutes to sort things out. I would consider it out of character if he did such a thing. The man has discovered love, has been influenced by it, but that doesn't mean he has undergone personality shift.
We see him clam up in that scene, as I would expect TK to. He is hurt, needs to get over it, sort out the facts, find MN and profess his love again.
Do I expect a few years laspe? No, it is not necessay. A few months would suffice.
Do I expect him to sit down with her and discuss it all now? No, it is out of his element.
Once the emotions have settled down, cooler heads will prevail. TK will make his decision, go after MN despite protest from everyone under the sun, and do what is right for him and her.

Eventhough a moon maynot be visible to others without a sun, the sun is actually considered an average star. Moon reflects light of the sun in places where the later is unable to do so. There are many many stars such as the sun, but the earth has only one moon. While the moon is extraodinary, the sun is just ordinary. In this lies the truth about MN and TK's relationship: she will always find the stars, but he will never find another moon.

oh - just another thought

in regards to TK realizing his mom may be manipulating MN/him:

i find that TK has reason to think his mom may be telling him the truth about MN deceiving him. His mom has been completely honest with him the whole time - so far as to say that "yes, if you weren't born my life would have been a lot better"

his mom is evil. what she said was evil. evil statements are characteristically her truths. hence, minam "deceiving" TK is true.

of course, we know better than that. how can a nun lie? =P

if TK calms down and realizes that, then he'll forgive MN

thanks for the recap!!! I loved reading your recap especially your thoughts on the episode. Have to agree with you about Lee Hongki. It was sooo heartbreaking how he sang with so much emotions, that it made almost everyone cry.

Regarding Mo Hwaran, She's sooo selfish, I think she just doesn't want anyone to be happy but herself. She may want to have Taekyung and Minyeo suffer the same fate that she did.

Anyhoo, I'm looking forward and yet dreading next week, knowing it's the last 2 episodes. Thanks javabeans, your weekly recaps make waiting for the next episode more exciting and less excruciating at the same time. Hehe thanks again!

Thank you for the recap. No Go Mi Nam? Why am I so excited about his appearance? I really feel like we need him. I think that he's going be to quite a character;)

And I do buy the "apologist" view, not only because I am one(professionally) but because I 100% identify with TK as a character(parental issues and all). Of course I will also say that I don't think that his anger/rejection will last too long. Though this situation is much bigger, it reminds me of the "throw up" incident. Like anyone he needs a moment to think. He's asked all the questions but hasn't given himself time to think of the answers. He's allowing pain and hurt to guide this moment. I honestly have faith in his character so his reaction at the end isn't surprising but preferably short-lived. Taking into consideration MN's character, I think he can move on, maybe not quickly but rightly.

Speaking of quick, I was thinking DERN! this man moves fast! He hugs her, says "I like you," goes on a 2 dates, hints to a long term relationship, kisses her and then buys her jewelry, all in the course of what a couple days?! Gotta love TK! Though some may say this is rushed, I think that it rings true to TK as a character. Completely loved it! (So actually, taking all that into consideration, maybe instead of walking away...he'll turn around and get her.)

Jeremy, like SW, was yet again "heartbreaking" but Lee Hong Ki was delightful! I was in tears. The interesting thing to me was that I was in deeper and understood greater his pain than Shin Woo's. In a way, I don't like this but I find that Jeremy is so simple and straightforward that to me his pain had more basis and substance. He was working with limited info, he never knew the truth, so his love was based solely on MN.
Also I love how we can then take a look at all three loves. In the light, there is only one that is needed and has grown. Meaning that, though the others were genuine, real and worth it, only one improved, progressed and will remain. Even in this time, with hurt feelings and broken trust, there will still be a "need" for that love. MN and TK need one another. I think that love is interesting that way.

Lastly, this mother. I have heard her called all kinds of hilarious names and sadly I agree with them all. I think that it fascinates me that I hate her but hate her existence, not really her. I feel she's just crazy. I don't believe anything she says. It seems that my thoughts toward her are coming to fruition so I'm glad. Not only that I was right but more that MN won't have to think of her father as an adulterer and that TK can forgive and move passed his insane self-absorbed mother.

I'm also so very glad that MN didn't let her get away with her treatment of TK. She cares deeply for TK and I would have been highly disappointed if she hadn't called his mother out for loving him less than she(MN) does. For me, its safe to say that MN (and her mother's) assessment is correct, her father didn't love her, not just the person we know today but also the person that married another man on him, had that man's kid, abandoned him and then tried (and may have succeeded in) destroying his marriage and family.

Oh and did anyone else find it interesting that MN didn't seem as resolved to their future as TK? I mean as we know up until the last 5 mins of the show, TK was sold solely on her, but yet she seemed to be slipping away to me. I know that MN is coming back and that changes some things but I thought we dealt with the nun thing so what is her hesitation? Is she still set on thinking of this as all a dream?Or is this just a set up to convince us(and herself) when she decides to retreat out her desire not to see TK hurting?

Thanks JB for the re cap & comments,
You are beautiful is quite entertaining in the acting perspective, but the story lines is quite dis appointing, Now it's more of un resolve conflicts with no solutions,& is more on fiction than reality with suppressions of feelings which is un healthy. Hoping they could thread the ending right or else its a waste.

Thanks JB for a great recap!

I agree with Hannah from above. For last nite's epi, I didn't even watch it raw which I have been doing since episode 3. But rather I waited till this morning to watch it in Chinese subbed. ( Thanks to the incredible subbers.) I am not as excited as before in regard to YAB. For some reason, my interest drops a lot after epi 13. Though there were lots of angst, the story appeared to lack the punch it carried in the earlier episodes. I wonder how the story will tie up all the outstanding issues which are many.

Jeremey is great in this episode and it is nice to see SW asserting himself.

Once again, Thank you JB

Thank you again for today recap, Javabeans. Somehow from the start, I have the feeling that this moment is to come - Tae Kyung pushing Mi Nyeo away due to their parents relationship in the past. It's something that I feel I can accept, so I have no complain of the moment especially when they are both crying at the end, even though there's a distance between them, their hearts are closer than ever. With two more episode coming to an end, I wonder what twist they'll put in to make a happy ending for us, I know cliche is unavoidable so I'll just appreciate it the way it is because You're Beautiful has truly been a great drama so far.

I totally agree with - 66- Nom_Kitteh - Nov 19, 2009 at 9:23 pm .
Hong 's sister should move on instead of lingering on those sub-plots which is a waste of time .

Episode 13 was the shining moment for Shin Woo .Jung Yong Hwa proved that he could act even though this is his first time .
Episode 14 was the explosion moments for Jeremy and Lee Hong Ki truly digged it .
Your heart all went out for Jeremy . This is Lee Hong Ki episode .

Actually , I do not worry much about TK and GMN in the next 2 episodes .
What I anticipate most is the real GMN appearance . Just only for 12 seconds of him - barely see his face and yet , you can tell the real GMN is a bad boy all over , he has an attitude - his 3 earings on one ear - and boy , he is so full of it . I love his smirk and the way he twisted his hair and shaking his feet - he gives us BAD BOY vibe .
I hope that PSH will be able to digg this role as to me - in the next episode - this is the LIVE or DIE episode for PSH - who will have to convince fans that this is the cool GMN that everybody is waiting for since the first episode .
I hope that PSH will not disapoint us with all of the expectations that are waiting to see the real GMN .
I have been liking her since the day of Stairway of Heaven and Heaven Trees . Even thought she was so young but she could act .She had amazing chemistry with Lee Wan in both series - since she was so young there were no kissing scenes in those two and yet , she was able to pull through .She was even named as a young Choi Chi Woo since she could shed her tears instantly . Even though Goong S was her bad choice , still I believe that if she choose the right script , she would be able to steal fan's heart easily and this is IT - YAB has made her a darling name for us fans all over the world .
By saying this , I sincerely wishing that in the episode 15 , again she will capture my heart not with her naive GoMyneo but with a BAD ASS as Go Mi Nam ....like Jung Yong Hwa owned episode 13 and Lee Hong Ki shocked us and blew us away with his acting in episode 14 . I expect more from PSH and hoping that she will be able to dig as GMN in episode 15 .....Go PSH go ..

wow this episode was like a major roller coaster but it was really good nonetheless. Even though we saw it coming in the preview it still gave the same effect as if it have been a complete surprise. It built up so happy feelings and then we feel heartbreak with Jeremy in the bus scene and then once again it builds up happiness with the first date and then boom disaster. Two episodes left I think it would have been nice if a couple of more episodes would have been added just because the ending is going to seem a bit rushed.
