Bong Joon-ho series at LACMA
by javabeans
If you’re in Southern California and have some time this weekend, you may want to check out the “Everything is a Mystery: Four Films by Bong Joon-ho” series at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) this weekend. Director Bong will even been in attendance for the Mother screening on Saturday. Arg, if I were in town I’d totally be there!
As you probably know, Bong is one of Korea’s top directors, and one of a very few who enjoy international recognition. His 2006 film The Host is the #1 top-grossing film of all time in Korea, and his latest film, Mother (starring Kim Hye-ja and Won Bin), screened at Cannes and is the South Korean entry for the upcoming Academy Awards. In addition to those two, LACMA will screen the “crazed romantic comedy” Barking Dogs Never Bite and taut thriller Memories of Murder
The schedule:
Fri., December 11 | 7:30 PM | The Host (2006, 괴물)
Fri., December 11 |
9:40 PM |
Barking Dogs Never Bite, aka A Higher Animal (2000, 플란다스의 개) |
|
Sat., December 12 | 4:30 PM | Memories of Murder (2003, 살인의 추억)
Sat., December 12 | 7:30 PM | Mother (2009, 마더) |

Just finished watching Mother this week.
It was very good.
It makes you wonder how far your own mother would go to protect you.

Ugh! my winter break doesn't start till two weeks later, so I won't be home for this!
I've only seen "The Host," but I wanna watch the others, especially "Mother". I'm gonna have to watch them later on my little computer screen. :(

I really enjoy Bong Joon Ho's works. :)
From the four movies, I only haven't seen THe HOst. The rest of the movies listed are really good movies. I especially loved Memories of Murder, that was a really compelling movie. Next is Mother and then Barking Dogs Never Bite. :D

Too bad I can't just pop down to LA. Yeah, Loved Memories of Murder; i should watch that again. Really enjoy the family drama of the Host, but i really can't watch anything scary, no matter how much i know in my head it's not "real."

Barking Dogs Never Bite is "crazed" all right, but "romantic comedy" is a misnomer. It's black comedy. ^^

Barking Dogs Never Bite is definitely a black comedy.......It's a story I tell often to my friends who are unfamiliar with Korean film and looking for something completely different. I have not seen Mother, but will try to get to the film fest this weekend, especially if Bong is doing a Q&A. We went to the AFI screening of Host, which I enjoyed, but BDNB, I think is an overall better film.

Memories of Murder is SUCH a good movie. It left me silent and brooding -- and I am already the silent and brooding type. It is way more of a horror movie than all of these movies of long-haired, pale school girls roaming around hallways and elevators and bathrooms -- there is always a bathroom to haunt -- killing people to avenge their rape or abandonment.
Host: meh. I did not care for the ending. Seriously, what the hell kind of ending is that anyway?
I hope to check out Mother soon.

AHHH TIMING=FAIL.
I'm leaving town tomorrow!! ..........this is like some kind of sick karma.
I guess the least I can do is get my friends to go for me. They won't understand Korean though...does anyone know if subtitles will be available?

Memories of Murder is a great suspense movie. I watched it several years ago and still vividly remember how good it was. Kim Sang Kyung had so much charisma in the movie - he stole the spotlight from Song Kang Ho easily. After watching him there, I immediately searched for his other movies and dramas but neither could match with the intense he displayed in Memories of Murder.

Bong sure is getting a lot of international attention. There was also a retrospective of his films a few months ago in London at the British Film Institute.

Watched Mother last night at the LACMA with my 17 year old daughter. Afterward, the Q & A session with Bong Joon-ho was insightful and interesting. There was nearly a full-house with a mixed crowd of Asians and non-Asians. Absolutely loved the film and will ponder its multi-level themes. Boon commented on some, but would have loved to have dinner with him and talked more about Korean society and its non-supportive role specifically to women with special-needs children.

Oh no I found out about this way too late! I live about 2 hours away from LA, and I didn't even know...Sigh. Looks like I'll just have to catch this another time or on the PC. Bong Joon-ho is a very impressive man, and I intend to check out his works real soon.
