Eugene publishes beauty book

Singer-turned-actress Eugene (currently in the weekend series Creating Destiny) is putting out her own book of beauty techniques and tips, called Eugene’s Beauty Secrets. The book was opened to preorders on December 10, and contains photos the star took herself on filming sets, personal anecdotes, and the beauty knowledge she has accumulated over her ten-plus years in the entertainment industry.

Korean stars seem to have perfected the art of fan service, and these types of books strike me as an extension of cyworld sites and mini-homepages more than anything else. Frankly I think this book sounds unremarkable, but if Lee Hye-young’s Beauty Bible is any indication, it’ll be a big hit. That book and its predecessor, Fashion Bible, were both bestsellers, which makes sense given Lee’s reputation for being a style-conscious fashionista. Eugene doesn’t have that image (she has always been cute and sweet as “Korea’s Fairy,” which was a nickname she was given since debuting as a teenager in a girl band), but she’ll probably sell well just on her name alone.

Eugene’s Beauty Secrets will be published on December 16.

I just watched up to 13 episodes of Creating Destiny.

Cute.

The scummy ex-boyfriend/father makes me want to stab him with a fork. Slowly and slowly and slowly.

I've attempted to watch Creating Destiny a few times, but couldn't get into it. Is it any good? I've watched many of Eugene's earlier shows including Wonderful Life, Really Really Like You, etc, but this show just doesn't seem interesting.

More than a decade ago, when I was but a wee lad perhaps, my cousin in Korea sent me a SES CD and there in the CD insert photos I saw and fell for Eugene.

I remember an SES music video where Eugene and the other two members of SES were dressed as fairies, glowing and flying around... ancient memories...

Anyhoo, I wonder what impact this book, and others like it, along with the multitude of magazines, music videos, television dramas, movies, and so on that feature the idealized female shape and beauty, will have on young Koreans.

I wonder if there will be a preface to the book that says that people, male or female, should seek to balance what they try to portray superficially, with what is inside of them. Maybe that's the job of parents, anyway.

i like her beauty, she doesn't give off the vibe that she's fussy.. i like her facial expressions in her dramas also..

@ #1 - you're gonna like the cliffhanger in ep15.. i'm enjoying this drama very well although i know it's not getting as much viewership as smile, you - but i like the pace of the story.

I wonder if they will be showing the maintenance they undergo to maintain their beauty... come on, it isn't just a dash of make up that makes them really look good...

@5, she doesnt have any surgery. at least, not yet. yeah its not just a dash of makeup but also their dietary and the beauty product they use.

anyway, i like eugene alot, she's pretty&cute and she's cool (i think). okay, i'm not someone who easily hate some celebrity unless i feel there's something wrong about them. and i agree although she made this book, she still doesnt give off the vibe that she's fussy...

Hahaha...perhaps, you can find such preface in BYJ's book. If you don't find it there, please try reading the transcript of Ven. Pomnyun Dharma Talk. ^_________^

The fairy thing gives Eugene that cachet. Even at 28, she still exudes a fresh next door prettiness that's non-threatening, unfussy yet eternally youthful. That sells. A lot. That image marketability is similar to Go Hyung Jung's, even though she dresses and wears her hair rather plainly, even homely at times in public.

Ha Ji Won should do a project like this. I'm sure some of the buyers would even be women. ;)

@samsooki,

"I wonder if there will be a preface to the book that says that people, male or female, should seek to balance what they try to portray superficially, with what is inside of them. Maybe that’s the job of parents, anyway."

Feeling secure (in the American sense of self-satisfaction) about your image is kinda alien to Korean culture though. Your image is your material value. Looking good = looking successful.

No book that includes pictures of Eugene could ever be completely "unremarkable." If there was ever to be a sweet kind of 'older sister' who could give advice and tips to woman and young ladies, without appearing narcissistic or intimidating, it is Eugene. Her relaxed manner and easy smile are both calming and exciting at the same time. A pair of jeans and a freshly scrubbed face suit her just fine. Made up and in her finery and shimmering across the stage, she's a ball of fire setting hearts aflutter. The very woman whose face and personality drew me into the world of Korean Drama in the first place. She's absolutely heavenly...

She has such a soft, good girl look. And that is much less criticized compared to another type of look/style. Eugene is lovely and at 28 she is still radiating youthfulness and freshness that can be found in most teens. I'm sure this book will sell just fine.

@ 2 Alain: I'm actually enjoying it, but I confess I'm merely watching it for Eugene & Ki Tae Young, i.e. the main couple. I tend to fast-forward the bits about the other side plot. :P It's very flawed but I enjoy it enough for the main couple. Also I find the grandfather character hilarious.

You mean the bromance between their dads? :D

@ 1 mishane
If you think it's cute in the first 13 episodes, wait til you catch episodes 16 & 17! I'm literally itching to watch 18 & 19, and cursing since I will be overseas without internet when 20 & 21 airs...

@ 2 Alain
I can understand why you couldn't get into it, because I couldn't either at the beginning. How many episodes have you watched? I personally thought the first few were pretty slow going and kind of boring, but now that I'm past the early part, it's ADORABLE. I think it started picking up around episodes 5-6 when Eugene and Ki Tae Young's characters decided to work together to trick their elders rather than simply flailing at them. Like other people mentioned, it's flawed and rather cliche, but dang it's light, cute romantic-comedy fun, and the two leads are worth it.

@ 12 belleza
LOL! The dads should just get together and hang out. Yeo Jun's mother is one of the most irritatingly spineless characters ever. I've lost count of how many times she's been manipulated by Hye Rim XD

Eugene and Ki Tae Young are an awesome couple in "Creating Destiny". They have on-screen chemistry that makes this show fun and exciting.

@ 12 belleza: Ahahahaa... no, I actually find the bromance between them rather adorable. I was referring to the damn Yun Hee-Hae Sung plot. Lemoncat is right... until Eps 5-6, I found the drama agonisingly slow. I believe because it was turning more into the Yun Hee & Hae Sung drama at that point, rather than the Sang Eun & Yeo Jun drama it had been touted to be from the previews and trailers (come on, I can't be the only person out there hooked to watch this just from the trailer!).

I found the Yun Hee & Hae Sung plot to be completely depressing and their arguments repetitive. Up until recently there was little progress in their storyline and I was seriously starting to pity the actor who played Hae Sung because he had to proclaim "She's my child!" God knows how many times. :P

Lemoncat - re Yeo Jun's mom... I KNOW, right? The thing I can't stand about her is that she is all fierce and what not at moments when she spouts off without thinking especially regarding Sang Eun, but when called on that by others (e.g. the grandma or grandpa) she immediately goes all meek and contrite. At least stand by your opinion! I cannot understand why she seems to trust her supposed friend, who blabs off unthinkingly all the damn time, than her own family.

If I were to go on about the flaws about this show there would be many (e.g. how can there be nothing redeeming about Hye Rim, her stepmother and stepfather? Are they only capable of acting for their own selfish interests?!), but instead I just choose to focus on how cute Sang Eun/Eugene & Yeo Jun/Ki Tae Young are in this drama. :D

Yeah, that's the thing. I'm one of the few people who prefers that storyline than the main one. It's bitter and mean . . . just like real life. (also, I like the budding noona love story. This Belleza has a weakness for "noona is pretty" storylines. :) ) Also, I only warmed up to Yeo Jun after seeing how much he cared for and wanted to do right by his sister.

"The thing I can’t stand about her is that she is all fierce and what not at moments when she spouts off without thinking especially regarding Sang Eun"

See, I always found it interesting how other Creating Destiny viewers see his mom . . . because, well, that's EXACTLY how most Asian moms are when you marry their sons.

It's a good show, because it kinda reiterates how "political" marriages are in traditional Asian culture. You're not only marrying him, your family is marrying their family.

Also, Sang Eung at times flirts with the "ignorant gyopo" stereotype. Thus, why the mom acts the way she does.

@16 Belleza

That's, right the side storey line is more interesting

for kdramas beside the main plot. It also relate to the

reality of our life esp. in asian cultures. The scriptwriter know how

to enterntain us.

Why do they have to use so much English? The can't say "Eugen's beauty secrets" using Korean words or what?

"... that’s EXACTLY how most Asian moms are when you marry their sons."

I'm Asian too, so I understand. But I would love it more if she stands by her opinion even when challenged, and not be all mousey and all when her husband or mother-in-law shoots down her opinions. I guess looking deeper it brings up the issues of expectations on accepted behaviour for her as a mother, wife and daughter-in-law. Or maybe I would love it more if her character seemed to... err.. have more of a spine?

Oh I like the budding noona love story too. I think it's sweet (though it might lead to nowhere).
