How was 2009 for you?

With the year coming to an end, that means it’s time to take stock of the past twelve months (well, eleven really) in kdramas. The broadcast stations will be holding their awards ceremonies at the end of the month, and I’m working on my wrap-up of 2009’s offerings — as are some very talented (and prolific!) drama-watching fans — which I’ll post up closer to the end of the year.

But this is your turn to weigh in on what you liked or didn’t. I didn’t do a year-end poll last year (after putting one up in 2007) and people seemed to really want one, so it’s back.
coup

Note that for most cases, I used the word “favorite” as opposed to “best,” so vote on your favorite in each category, whatever that word means to you. It could be the one you thought was the best quality, or simply the one you enjoyed the most. Polls will be open for voting till the end of the month.

FAVORITE DRAMA OF 2009

I tried to be inclusive but naturally couldn’t list every drama that aired in 2009 (there were more than 50). I included dramas that aired the majority of their episodes this year, but left off those that aired more than half their episodes in 2008 (like East of Eden) or haven’t yet aired half their runs (Will It Snow For Christmas).

Did I leave out your favorite? Let me know in the comments!

     Update! Added:

FAVORITE THRILLER OR BLOCKBUSTER DRAMA

Dramas in this category often boast big budgets and feature big names in front of and/or behind the cameras, whether that means lead actors like Lee Byung-heon or A-list screenwriters like Choi Wan-kyu (Swallow the Sun) or Song Ji-nah (Story of a Man). These dramas may also feature stories with broad scopes, lots of suspense and/or heated power struggles — mobsters, assassination attempts, espionage, and money games, they’ve got it all.

FAVORITE HISTORICAL DRAMA

Some of these are more conventional historicals, while others are in the fusion bent, but all are period pieces and feature some great costuming, acting, and fusion-inflected music and score.

FAVORITE TRENDY DRAMA

Trendy kdramas, which are mostly set in contemporary times and tend to focus on relationships and modern urban life, aren’t the exact same thing as romantic comedies, but the two terms have become almost synonymous when talking about Korean dramas nowadays. (This is particularly true because trendy no longer means exclusively contemporary. The growing fusion trend is giving rise to the “trendy sageuk” such as Hong Gil Dong and Tamra the Island, both of which are, of course, not set in modern times.)

FAVORITE MELODRAMA OR SOAP

A couple of the dramas below seem like they belong more in 2008 (A Star’s Lover, Wife’s Temptation) but they did indeed broadcast more than half their episodes in 2009. The oft-derided (but highly watched) “makjang” genre fits in here, where fast developments employ outrageous plot twists and do anything under the sun to keep ratings high, whether it’s the use of devices like switched identities, secret babies, revenge vendettas, adultery, violence, and/or tragedy. But not all soaps are makjang, and while an entry like A Star’s Lover may also be considered a trendy, but I think its tone is pure melodrama.

FAVORITE FAMILY DRAMA

Family dramas are difficult to summarize in 100 characters (my word limit here), because they’re often populated with lots of members of a sprawling, multigenerational family. Tonally, there’s no restriction; they can range from straight/dramatic to light-hearted and comic. The themes most often explored are love and marriage, generational conflicts, and interfamily relationships. It’s stuff that sounds generic on paper, but the execution and tone of the drama sets the series apart from each other.

FAVORITE CHARACTER

If someone were to say a character’s name, would you immediately have a sense of not only which drama they were in, but what kind of qualities the character embodies? Has his or her name become shorthand for an entire set of traits? (“Sageuk F4,” for instance, probably elicits an immediate mental picture. As does “middle-aged Gu Jun-pyo.”) If you have to puzzle over a character’s name, wondering where he/she was from, they probably aren’t in this list.

FAVORITE COUPLE

For better or for worse, modern kdramas focus heavily on love relationships between its main characters. Often we’ll get the obvious love triangle or rectangle, although sometimes the lines will get even more messily entangled and create other romantic polygons. This kdrama emphasis on love could spark an entire discussion of its own, so I’ll just say that this means that a drama’s appeal is often linked inextricably to the effectiveness of its main pairing. It’s even true when the drama is (ostensibly) about something other than romance, such as medicine, law, business, war, or espionage. When a main couple fails to spark and create chemistry, no matter how well their parts are written, a drama loses some of its energy. But when they do come together, boy does the end result end up much more than the sum of its parts. So, who sizzled this year?

FAVE ALTERNATE PAIRING

Sometimes an alternate pairing is just as fun as the OTP (“one true pairing,” aka the main couple) — or even more so. When an OTP becomes too drawn out, often a second pairing will lighten things up and allow you to enjoy romantic chemistry without as much angst. Or perhaps you suffer from Second Lead Crush Syndrome (as I often do), and find the supporting male lead more compelling, or deserving, than the hero. You know it’s a losing proposition but you’ll root for Mr. Second Lead to get the girl instead.

NOTE: To clarify (sorry for the confusion), Boys Before Flowers’ true “soulmates” are Jan-di and Ji-hoo (Gu Hye-sun, Kim Hyun-joong). “Soeulmates” is the nickname for Kim Bum and Kim So-eun’s characters.

BREAKOUT PERFORMANCE

I’m talking about people who were relatively unknown before a 2009 drama made their star rise. Therefore, even though Go Hyun-jung acted the heck out of a memorable character, she doesn’t count because she’s already an A-lister. Even some actors who aren’t at her level — like Kim Bum (Dream), Kim Kang-woo (Story of a Man), or Jang Geun-seok and Park Shin-hye (You’re Beautiful) — weren’t counted because they were all known prior to their roles this year. On the other hand, the following actors went from unknown names to familiar faces overnight:

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

I learn this lesson time and time again: You can never judge a drama until it’s actually aired, no matter what it seems like from the pre-show promos and teasers. It cuts both ways: Sometimes a drama will be surprisingly good. But conversely, when pre-show buzz seems strong and/or certain well-loved stars are making television comebacks, it’s natural to get one’s hopes up. Unfortunately, that often leads to disappointments when the drama falls short of our expectations.

MOST OVERRATED DRAMA

I know the word “overrated” carries some baggage, but here I want to use it as the direct opposite of “underrated” — as in, you feel it got more attention than it merited (even if the drama was generally good). This is a small category, given that to be here, these dramas had to be popular enough in the first place to be considered overrated.

MOST UNDERRATED DRAMA

Now for the other end of the spectrum: These dramas had smaller fanbases and lower ratings numbers, but were, sadly, not given their due. Thank goodness for mania fans, eh?

(And because I know someone will ask: No, I didn’t include You’re Beautiful in either the overrated or underrated categories. It didn’t get high enough ratings to be put in the above list, but its media and fan buzz was so strong that I don’t think you could call it underrated, either.)

Wow, this is really tough! I know that I have 2 fav dramas this year: Story of a man and You are Beautiful. Even so, they are way different kind of dramas, so its hard to choose, but I think, that after I watch YAB twice, it give me my answer.
I must be honest and say, that I havent watch all that much dramas from 2009, so perhaps Im dont have enough knowledge or drama hours, for this poll, but what can I say, I love polls really much.
Thanks JB, this is a great guide for choosing new dramas, so Ill keep this in my mind and go back after this poll ends.
Thanks again

And You're Beautiful wins...everything! haha
But seriously, it was great. Amazing. So cute. Hilarious. Angsty! LOVED IT!

Most underrated goes to The Man Who Can't Get Married for sure! It was so cute and funny! And there was like, no dragging what so ever. The cast was adorable and sweet. Actually if anyone liked this one, they should check out the Jdrama called At Home Dad. It has a similar light, funny feel to it. The characters and storyline are completely different, but it just...feels similar.

Javabeans - Love this post - glad to see them again this year... missed it last year.

It was tough to vote since I wasn't able to watch very many dramas this year, let again very many k-dramas. That made it limiting on my votes... I watched most of the rom-coms & trendy ones though so I voted there. While I really like YB A LOT, I still picked BOF as my favorite despite all the flaws (and there were soo many). Cause truthfully, I really enjoyed watching BOF overall more than YB (in the minority here clearly).

But I really loved YB too - they both were a fun ride. By no means do I think they are necessary "good" dramas but I was super entertained and rewatched them many times. That's all that really matters to me. City Hall was good but I think for me, I wasn't in the right mood to watch it, so it wasn't a favorite (yet). I also like QOHs.

Great Job JB. I have a lot of fun doing this poll. And I am happy to see a lot of people have the same tastes as me. You're beautiful and City Hall are my two favorites drama of 2009. (For real, this two dramas - you can rewatch for thousand times and you won't get borred, as for the rest even BOF or SH - I just don't feel like rewatching it at all). From the bottom of my heart, I wish YB and CH can win something big this year.

Thanks for the poll dramabeans. It was helluva fun!

I have watched one drama only (YAB), well two, if you count "started but not finished" (BOF). So mostly, this poll was between those two for me.

I super enjoyed seeing the results! Hahaha! Go YAB!

By the way, i also voted for Jeremy and Hwang TaeKyung for Alternative Pairing. I didn't like the implication but i just couldn't resist giggling when i saw their names. Keke

This is fun! I have to say the best drama of the year IS You Are Beautiful.
I couldn't finish watching BBF, a total mess. My Fair Lady was a disater as well.
I thought the year was going to be a total disappointment until YAB comes along.
I just love, love, love it.

I think that You are Beautiful has such high marks is because it is finally a drama that was more fun than angst. It was just fluffy fun to the highest sophistication. IMHO. After tons of serious melodramas and few comedies that was lost compared to the angst in the end, here is a drama that didn't fit into the mold. Maybe that is why it didn't get the creditable ratings in Korea that it deserved. Yet worldwide it receive never-ending support. This drama was guaranteed full of youth and laughs but also it had no serious strings attached. And I think thats why it attracts audiences and is the "magic" that makes it memorable.

Jb, thank you for everything! Your writings are always a blast to read and very entertaining. Love these polls and excited to see the final results.

I noticed a interesting trend in the voting. The dramas, listed first tend to get higher ratings, and then the ratings decrease as you move down the list.
My fav drama this year was MAN WHO CANNOT GET MARRIED :) hilarious!

JB, too bad you don`t put Tamra, the Island as favorite drama of 2009...Because it does! And Park Kyu as favorite drama character of the year also...

Seeing your list, i haven`t watch your all your list of blockbuster/thriller and makjang drama. I don`t like makjang drama, but i think it might be a big hit in my country, because all the drama we have ARE makjang drama! I think I might catch up watching Soul and Story of a man when i find the time...

Thanks, JB! It`s fun!

I honestly didn't think YAB was that amazing... it was light hearted and fun but didn't make register as much emotion (excitement, anticipation, that melty feeling of luv) as dramas I count to be in my top three (like CH)...I mean I didn't even finish watching YAB yet (partly because of exams and partly because I read the recaps so I already know what happened and am not in a hurry nor aching to revisit it). To each they're own I guess.

But yeah seeing this list made me realize how few drama I've watched. But then I'm not into melodramas, never tried sageuks, am daunted by long running dramas in general. Trendy dramas are awesome in that sense because they're short and funny and not too much of that over the top dramatic stuff.

Anyway, I really wish I could've liked (or wished for a better plot for) Triple. It seemed like it had everything good going for it except for the writing (I still listen to the soundtrack and get very nostalgic. Tearliner did a good job, nuff said). It was fairly boring and comparing it to CP it seemed like in order to make the tone more serious in comparison all the jokiness was taken out as well as anything remotely interesting.

@47: ok so this is not directed towards the owner of this site so don't get offended. This is just purely logical argument.
no actually last time I checked, 2PM's Jaebeom wrote something offensive in his blog and he got some major backlash so I think the owner of this site would expect the same thing to happen if she thinks she can write whatever she wants in her blog. The logic that "this is my blog so I can write whatever" is so old already and it doesn't work anymore nowadays.

@Sig #122

I agree - I appreciate You're Beautiful for all of the fluffy and fun it is, but I'm sorry, I didn't get an emotional "clinch" from watching this. Which is why I am so lately obsessed with Smile, You, because I definitely feel that emotional "clinch." You're Beautiful is innovative, fun, witty, but where is the chemistry? On the other hand, there is also that great amount of chemistry found between CH's Jo Gook and Mirae. "To each their own" is quite accurate - I watch dramas for wittiness of plot, fun, etc., but I watch dramas mainly for a CHEMISTRY. Like, I want to get lost in that chemistry sort of chemistry. One where I am making some sort of connection with the actors. And that definitely did NOT happen in You're Beautiful, for me at least. The parts where I think I was supposed to feel the emotional "clinch," I didn't.

But this was mainly such a TOUGH poll because how the heck am I supposed to choose my favorite drama from such a varied list? I loved Story of a Man because it was so intense and thriller - but City Hall was so much more romantic. I can't compare the two, really... And, haha, the alternate couple one was a toughie too.

I wish I'd watched more dramas this year - I think that is also a problem of bias in this poll. If some people had seen some of these dramas, maybe they'd have a different opinion? Maybe not?

There are still a few that I want to get to.

I think it's a given You're Beautiful will get majority...seeing as it just finished and people are still experiencing withdrawal symptoms......so i wasn't surprised to see it top the lists, infact I even rolled my eyes...it was a funny drama, however got extremely draggy near the end~~

Anywho, personally loved Brilliant Legacy just a tad bit more than YB~~ but I do think YB excelled as a young romantic comedy, while BL was more of a melodrama

BOF - visually so appealing you almost didnt realize how craptastic the dialogues were...

Hmm, i need to finish off alot of these dramas!~~~

I really have serious obssession over You're Beautiful, it's like I vote for YAB, and would scream everytime when the results show that YAB is leading.

Lol, and I totally love the Taekyung and Jeremy pairing, look at the BTS! Hong Ki really adores his Geun Suk-hyung. But still, I had to debate choosing between TK and Jeremy VS Yi Jung and Ga Eul, they are cute too!

Ahh, love YAB. Seriously, hope YAB will quickly spread throughout Asia and create a hot mess!

Among the dramas I've watched this year, YAB is my favorite. But I think the reason why YAB is riding high in this poll is because it is the most recent and people are still feasting over it. While BOF was shown early part of the year and people have already forgotten how the craze was at that time. Although the drama itself is forgettable, Lee Min Ho did a breakthrough performance and is deserving of the votes he got.

Coffee Prince is still #1 for me and YAB is #2...

watched only a couple of K dramas this year....my 3 top favorite
1) You're beautiful - Geun Suk's Hwang Tae Kyung is amazing....loving every character in this drama...great OST too
2) Boys Over Flowers- got sucked into the mania and Lee min Ho early this year ...the second half was dissapointing but my love for Jun Pyo make me persevere till the end ...almost paradiseeee still ringing in my head
3) Sons of Sol Pharmacy
Iris
City Hall
Man Who can't get married

Favorite character in a drama would be Tae Kyung....torn with Goo Jun Pyo but Tae Kyung awesomeness is consistent throughout the series

As always Javabeans, thanks for the excellent post! I have actually been waiting for your End of Year Reviews, but this is a good surprise as we anticipate your 2009 feedback. ( As well as for your guest bloggers)..

For me 2009 for kdrama land has been a year of disappointments. The dramas I have been expecting to be good or great and hit the ratings big time did not really deliver, meanwhile, the drama that I really was not looking forward to became my favorite drama of all time.

1. Boys Before Flowers - It was fun and crazy with all the hype and I am already a fans from of the whole franchise, but it HAD a lot of flaws, and it painfully dragging to keep the OTP apart.

2. Partner - ooh I love this one, but gosh the ratings are a shame..

3. Triple - I expected a lot from this drama because of the Yoon Kye Sang, Lee Seon Gyun and the PD - Writer team.. I watched it painfully til the end.

4. My Fair Lady - I will always be a YEH fan, so it is sad and shameful of me (as her fan) to give up this drama because it really just lost its flair, spunk and jazz to me. I think the ratings only reflect the popularity of its stars..

5. IRIS - I still believe this drama is overrated. Sure it has big budget, big stars which I love.. but the writing sometimes confuses me.. Maybe the drama is too elaborate and complicated with its plot?

6. You're Beautiful - is a BIG surprise for me. When this drama was announced, and all the news prior to its broadcast were out, I was not really paying attention. Sure I read it here and there on certain blogs, and even here in on this site, but I never really "anticipated" watching it. It certainly was not on my top priority list to watch. A lot have been said already regarding this drama, so I'll just make it short. This drama is now my favorite (favorite as Javabeans has defined it earlier) drama of all time, dethroning Coffee Prince and My Girl at the top spots.

Well, this is my opinion.

It seems like after BOF came out, everyone was talking about how much they love BOF and how it was the best drama ever.

Then YAB came out and the same thing happened again. (at least YAB was comedic)

I feel like both brought a lot more people to our little community, but I hope that people are able to branch out and love the other genres of k-drama. Because it blew me away that YAB won all those category's, it felt way too kitschy for me.

I was all for the "seoulmates" though. I think Shining Inheritance/Brilliant Legacy was by far the best drama of the year. That drama made me cry and cry and cry. Best ratings too.

@138: I don't think the hype of BoF is same with YaB. I hate Bof hypes, overrated fames and excessive popularity and endless liking by many because of the bad casting and script. Meanwhile, YaB is underdog. People didn't notice it so much, or we are very much sceptical about it at the first place.

Moreover, if you read closely what people saying or comments of Bof many said it has lot's flaws, a bad drama production etc and people who enjoyed or loved usually teenagers or those who used to love this kind of idol/trendy drama. But Javabeans has made clear and intact pictures between BoF and YaB. Many people who love quality drama dislike BoF while admitted enjoyed it.

On the other hand, YaB is only similar of it surface premise but nothing common in the production, script, execution, acting etc. While I dislike everything related to BoF, I can understand the hype's behind YaB, because it manage to awaken my long lost interest of K dramas or K trendy dramas for me. It deserved all the hypes whatsoever even not all people indulge/love in it which is something normal. It not the most brilliant dramas in my list, but definitely something special and unique it is and I haven't finished watch or eager to finish it. I just filled up my times.

It does hardly seem fair JB! YB just ended, your site got crashed at least once in the last few weeks due to YB, so not only are the people here self-selected, they're also going through dramatic YB withdrawal!

(But I'm not complaining, I'm one of them rabid junkies undergoing cold turkey, so far be it for me to turn down any chance to wax lyrical about the show! :) )

BTW, you might want to put Ji-hoo/Jan-di somewhere in the favorite couple, I know a good portion of the BOF fuss was over which guy the audience liked better, and I actually think KHJ was the one who shot to fame over BoF (afterall he's getting the high-profile Momo role, even if LMH gets more dough over CFs).

Okay okay, I confess I didn't like LMH in BoF at all, for all of the actor's faults, Ji-hoo was just so much more sympathetic a character and Jun-pyo wasn't reluctant enough as "bad boy on the outside and softie on the inside"- I couldn't get the violent image of him out of my head, and mean is one thing, bullying, physical violence, driving classmates to teen suicide... no thank you!

Alright, back to my rave.... recently I discovered a major advantage to being a working-gal ahjumma.... disposable income! (My pig-bit is on its way, my pig-bit is on its way! ;) )

I love this poll, but in some ways it isn't really fair because most of us are just coming off of the heels of You're beautiful. Before I watched you're beautiful I think my answers might have been very different. In that same respect my answers might be really different a couple of months from now, given and same questions and choices. I guess what i'm saying is that this couldn't have been a clear indicator because there are some really wonderful dramas in here that couldn't be spotlighted because it was eclipsed by YB wonderfulness. But whatcha gonna do, I had fun!

my favourite drama this year was surely The Man Who Can't Get Married!!! Everyone's acting was superb (including the dog), and the writer made an excellent adaptation. What more can you ask?

You should put "You're Beautiful" in term of "overrated". (ok, I know ratings weren't that great, but LOOK at the polls)

YB ain't that great. C'mon, be honest, people.
