How was 2009 for you?

With the year coming to an end, that means it’s time to take stock of the past twelve months (well, eleven really) in kdramas. The broadcast stations will be holding their awards ceremonies at the end of the month, and I’m working on my wrap-up of 2009’s offerings — as are some very talented (and prolific!) drama-watching fans — which I’ll post up closer to the end of the year.

But this is your turn to weigh in on what you liked or didn’t. I didn’t do a year-end poll last year (after putting one up in 2007) and people seemed to really want one, so it’s back.
coup

Note that for most cases, I used the word “favorite” as opposed to “best,” so vote on your favorite in each category, whatever that word means to you. It could be the one you thought was the best quality, or simply the one you enjoyed the most. Polls will be open for voting till the end of the month.

FAVORITE DRAMA OF 2009

I tried to be inclusive but naturally couldn’t list every drama that aired in 2009 (there were more than 50). I included dramas that aired the majority of their episodes this year, but left off those that aired more than half their episodes in 2008 (like East of Eden) or haven’t yet aired half their runs (Will It Snow For Christmas).

Did I leave out your favorite? Let me know in the comments!

     Update! Added:

FAVORITE THRILLER OR BLOCKBUSTER DRAMA

Dramas in this category often boast big budgets and feature big names in front of and/or behind the cameras, whether that means lead actors like Lee Byung-heon or A-list screenwriters like Choi Wan-kyu (Swallow the Sun) or Song Ji-nah (Story of a Man). These dramas may also feature stories with broad scopes, lots of suspense and/or heated power struggles — mobsters, assassination attempts, espionage, and money games, they’ve got it all.

FAVORITE HISTORICAL DRAMA

Some of these are more conventional historicals, while others are in the fusion bent, but all are period pieces and feature some great costuming, acting, and fusion-inflected music and score.

FAVORITE TRENDY DRAMA

Trendy kdramas, which are mostly set in contemporary times and tend to focus on relationships and modern urban life, aren’t the exact same thing as romantic comedies, but the two terms have become almost synonymous when talking about Korean dramas nowadays. (This is particularly true because trendy no longer means exclusively contemporary. The growing fusion trend is giving rise to the “trendy sageuk” such as Hong Gil Dong and Tamra the Island, both of which are, of course, not set in modern times.)

FAVORITE MELODRAMA OR SOAP

A couple of the dramas below seem like they belong more in 2008 (A Star’s Lover, Wife’s Temptation) but they did indeed broadcast more than half their episodes in 2009. The oft-derided (but highly watched) “makjang” genre fits in here, where fast developments employ outrageous plot twists and do anything under the sun to keep ratings high, whether it’s the use of devices like switched identities, secret babies, revenge vendettas, adultery, violence, and/or tragedy. But not all soaps are makjang, and while an entry like A Star’s Lover may also be considered a trendy, but I think its tone is pure melodrama.

FAVORITE FAMILY DRAMA

Family dramas are difficult to summarize in 100 characters (my word limit here), because they’re often populated with lots of members of a sprawling, multigenerational family. Tonally, there’s no restriction; they can range from straight/dramatic to light-hearted and comic. The themes most often explored are love and marriage, generational conflicts, and interfamily relationships. It’s stuff that sounds generic on paper, but the execution and tone of the drama sets the series apart from each other.

FAVORITE CHARACTER

If someone were to say a character’s name, would you immediately have a sense of not only which drama they were in, but what kind of qualities the character embodies? Has his or her name become shorthand for an entire set of traits? (“Sageuk F4,” for instance, probably elicits an immediate mental picture. As does “middle-aged Gu Jun-pyo.”) If you have to puzzle over a character’s name, wondering where he/she was from, they probably aren’t in this list.

FAVORITE COUPLE

For better or for worse, modern kdramas focus heavily on love relationships between its main characters. Often we’ll get the obvious love triangle or rectangle, although sometimes the lines will get even more messily entangled and create other romantic polygons. This kdrama emphasis on love could spark an entire discussion of its own, so I’ll just say that this means that a drama’s appeal is often linked inextricably to the effectiveness of its main pairing. It’s even true when the drama is (ostensibly) about something other than romance, such as medicine, law, business, war, or espionage. When a main couple fails to spark and create chemistry, no matter how well their parts are written, a drama loses some of its energy. But when they do come together, boy does the end result end up much more than the sum of its parts. So, who sizzled this year?

FAVE ALTERNATE PAIRING

Sometimes an alternate pairing is just as fun as the OTP (“one true pairing,” aka the main couple) — or even more so. When an OTP becomes too drawn out, often a second pairing will lighten things up and allow you to enjoy romantic chemistry without as much angst. Or perhaps you suffer from Second Lead Crush Syndrome (as I often do), and find the supporting male lead more compelling, or deserving, than the hero. You know it’s a losing proposition but you’ll root for Mr. Second Lead to get the girl instead.

NOTE: To clarify (sorry for the confusion), Boys Before Flowers’ true “soulmates” are Jan-di and Ji-hoo (Gu Hye-sun, Kim Hyun-joong). “Soeulmates” is the nickname for Kim Bum and Kim So-eun’s characters.

BREAKOUT PERFORMANCE

I’m talking about people who were relatively unknown before a 2009 drama made their star rise. Therefore, even though Go Hyun-jung acted the heck out of a memorable character, she doesn’t count because she’s already an A-lister. Even some actors who aren’t at her level — like Kim Bum (Dream), Kim Kang-woo (Story of a Man), or Jang Geun-seok and Park Shin-hye (You’re Beautiful) — weren’t counted because they were all known prior to their roles this year. On the other hand, the following actors went from unknown names to familiar faces overnight:

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

I learn this lesson time and time again: You can never judge a drama until it’s actually aired, no matter what it seems like from the pre-show promos and teasers. It cuts both ways: Sometimes a drama will be surprisingly good. But conversely, when pre-show buzz seems strong and/or certain well-loved stars are making television comebacks, it’s natural to get one’s hopes up. Unfortunately, that often leads to disappointments when the drama falls short of our expectations.

MOST OVERRATED DRAMA

I know the word “overrated” carries some baggage, but here I want to use it as the direct opposite of “underrated” — as in, you feel it got more attention than it merited (even if the drama was generally good). This is a small category, given that to be here, these dramas had to be popular enough in the first place to be considered overrated.

MOST UNDERRATED DRAMA

Now for the other end of the spectrum: These dramas had smaller fanbases and lower ratings numbers, but were, sadly, not given their due. Thank goodness for mania fans, eh?

(And because I know someone will ask: No, I didn’t include You’re Beautiful in either the overrated or underrated categories. It didn’t get high enough ratings to be put in the above list, but its media and fan buzz was so strong that I don’t think you could call it underrated, either.)

I really enjoy some great dramas this year

The polls are too biased. There must be a lot of voters who haven't even watched all the dramas.

Queen of Housewives: so entertaining, yoon sang hyun-made his character just too sexy (too bad it wasnt the same in my fair lady), and tae bong--the only name i still remember clearly from the drama

Story of a Man: Kim Kang Woo--should go on a list called "perfect specimens." sexy. drove me to watch all his movies. I wanna watch that fight scene in the empty lot and that tractor again. Incredible, I think I learned what great acting is from watching him.

Triple: I loved it sooooo much. Of all the dramas i've seen this year, this is the one I'd be most willing to rewatch. Watching it just made me sooo happy. Just too cute. The opening and closing narratives were just beautiful. I'm still listening to the soundtrack and i watched this show back in august. I really liked how I couldn't decide, for the life of me, if she should be with her oppa or joong ki. [See, I wish k dramas wouldnt always make their love triangles so obvious. We know..before the first episode even airs.. who the main leads are and who is gonna win in the triangle. Whats the point of the second lead then..it doesnt make it interesting, just annoying often times, and i really never find the second lead appealing and i'm just stupified at how other people do. Like jihoo and shinwoo and sa woo, and the one in brililant legacy-they were all boring or annoying and a waste of time. They were DESIGNED to be not as appealing as the main character. HOWEVER. now that i think about it, three dramas this year has defied this usual recipe-triple, story of a man, and queen of housewives. and they were all dramas i thoroughly enjoyed. HOW GREAT.]

YAB: ugh god. i LOVED the first couple of episodes. But it was getting annoying, shin woo's repeated but obviously destined to fail attempts, tae kyung's mother-too much of her just talking to herself or someone else evily, same with uee-one little tantrum after another that doesnt really result in anything, go mi nam's damn character-seriously theres a fine line between PURE STUPIDITY AND FAILING TO OBSERVE THE OBVIOUS vs being naive (I say this because even KIDS who watch this would probably be able to tell what she cant). JGS had me drooling for a couple of days but got tired of the sneering eventually.
JGS and PSH had much better chemistry..IN REAL LIFE OFF SCREEN. I couldnt bring myself to finish watching this series, but i did read your recaps, so thank you.

boys before flowers- loved the hype, loved the excitement, loved the first couple of episodes. it was a world of its own. latter episodes dragged and annoyed but still had to watch. drew me into k pop and k drams again. fantastic

iljimae- watched quite a few episodes, but didn't really look forward to watching the rest. kind of boring. but pretty

iris- annoying. Ive seen my share of 24, alias, and countless movies about this spy stuff. This stuff was weakass. Sa woo is hawt, better looking than LBH. Out of all the beautiful women in Korea, KTH seriously isnt that great at all..something about her face bothered me. The north korean lady, however, is a fierce, stunning, beautiful lady. I could believe she's a spy. KTH's just pretty weakass in general and not interesting to watch.

brilliant legacy-pretty okay. not the best stuff ever but kept me entertained. not that memorable afterwards though.

smile, you- love it. and i dare you not to love the two leads. Actually, all the younger characters in it are pretty lovable--this doesnt include the annoying older sis. the two lead's chemistry is amazing. so much real interaction to really show off that chemistry too.

sorry for the essay.. meant to say a LOT less than i did..

oh what a fun poll! and the comments were even funnier, hehe!

I voted for YaB in most of the categories it was in, maybe all :-) It really was my favorite drama of the year... I'm a total fangirl of the Hong sisters' writing, so I had been eagerly waiting for this drama ever since it was announced and YaB made good (and then some!) on its early promise of being the most awesome crack ever!

My second fav has to be Return of Iljimae... it's simply a masterpiece and excels on all fronts... The 1st ten mins of ep 23 are hauntingly sad and kill me every time I watch it...

I had to choose between BoF (so hilariously addictive and cheesy!) and IRIS (great plot and LBH's acting is incredibly superb, it was mesmerizing to watch) for the third spot and finally went with the latter 'cos LBH>LMH... heehee!

so hard to choose between You're Beautiful-Shining Inheritance and TK Minam-Hwan Eunsung... hahaha. both of them are awesome in my eyes *_*

but to be honest... nothing replaces YAB in my heart! :D

YAB will definitely win in all the categories that put YAB in the nominees ^^

and... BOF will definitely win for... nothing. emm except, most overrated maybe???

Lols, it's not surprising BOF and YB got the most votes, but I guess I was a little disappointed in the results. Am I wrong to think JB's haven has more mature and enlightened readership? Why does this look like a Soompi poll? lols. Or am I just being prissy and need to lighten up? Hahaha, yea, that's probably it. Whatever the reason, it's still an interesting survey.

I'm 21 years old. I'm definitely not a K-drama fan, and never thought I'd actually come to like one (especially this much). I've always been a skeptic. I can't take the over the top WTF-was-that-supposed-to-be-funny comedies they tend to throw in, nor can I take in the serious over dramatic plots with all the angst and crying. It's just all too much. I never thought I'd actually come to like a Korean drama, but then You're Beautiful came along and flipped my world upside down.

I've had my fair share of drama crazes (none of which were Korean dramas) but this would actually be the first time I've been this pink and happy over a single drama, and guess what? It's Korean.

So, being a skeptic myself, and accidentally falling in love with this cute little drama, I feel like I've got to stand up and defend it against all the bad allegations people are making.

Having a fanbase doesn't mean anything.
I'd be lying if I said I I've never heard of any of the casts from You're Beautiful prior to watching it. I first heard about Jang Geun Suk when I found out he was actually the first choice for Goo Jun Pyo. I knew Lee Hongki was was FT Island's main vocalist. I knew Park Shin Hye from Stairway to Heaven. The only one I've never heard of was Yongwha. I had no interest in the cast. I had a bad impression Geun Suk, I could care less about pretty face Hongki, I couldn't stand Shin Hye for her past roles, and Yongwha who? It was only when I started watching the drama that I started to like the cast of You're Beautiful. So those who are saying people like this drama has so many votes because of fanbase, think again. I wasn't even a fan of any one of these people until I watched the drama. If having a big fanbase truly does play a role, then star studded IRIS with Big Bang's TOP, and Heading to the Ground with TVXQ's Uknow would have had the most votes.

Over rated?
This part, I can't help but laugh at. How can a drama that's literally struggling to keep a two digit rating be over rated? You're Beautiful did not have flashy promos. It did not garner attention for a star studded cast because it didn't even have a star studded cast. It did not have a gazzillion fan merchandise already packed and ready to be shoved down your throats. Just because a small drama (with poor ratings) created a big buzz online, it's over rated? Really folks. If anything, You're Beautiful is an underrated drama that's being given the recognition it deserves.

Age has nothing to do with it's popularity. I'm sure a large chunk of viewers are teenagers, but there are also young adults such as myself, and many middle aged folks watching this. So saying this drama is famous because of brainless idol-loving teenagers is really offensive to the rest of us, and just flat out stereotyping.

Bias voting?
Each individual is casting their votes based on their own opinions. Is that wrong? It can't be helped if MORE people like You're Beautiful. Don't be such a sore loser if your drama isn't winning in the poles. It's just a pole.

I think You're Beautiful is winning in these poles, because like JB stated before, it touches us (well, the majority of us anyway) where no other drama has. And I've gotta disagree with those who said this, but You're Beautiful is most definitely a fresh breath of air. I've yet to encounter a drama that's made me feel all sorts of rushes of emotions, one right after another. Within a span of 15 minutes I would go from smiling with glee to crying like a baby.

I love this drama for it's short, sweet, simple, and straight to the point storyline. Unlike previous dramas, You're Beautiful didn't beat around the bushes for too long with the more complex angsty plots. Sure, it took Shinwoo forever to confess, and Taekyung took forever to realize his feelings, but when the time came, they took action without hesitation. And when there would be an angsty moment, there'd be a hilarious one trailing not too far behind to cheer us all up. That's the beauty of You're Beautiful.

If I loved anything more than the plot itself, it would have to be the cast. Geun Suk was just amazing, Yongwha did better than expected, and Hongki just had me squealing throughout the whole show. If I had to praise one person more than the rest, it would have to be Park Shin Hye. She made Min-nyu clumsy, clueless, naive, and simply endearing without making her annoying. (This, coming from someone who used to couldn't stand Shin Hye.)

I know quite a few of you like to point out that You're Beautiful is famous because it's storyline evolves around and idol group. However, once you start watching it, you'll actually start to forget that they're supposed to even be an idol group until certain things like concerts jolt you back.

I used to question why on earth You're Beautiful has so low-ratings in Korea... and yea, because there was IRIS. [Personally, I love YAB, it was such a refreshing series.] I think the netizens and Korean people have opposite tastes in dramas perhaps??? I really think it is such a waste for the actors of YAB. JGS had done a really great job in portraying TK! :))

I think if this poll was posted like 6-8 months ago, BOF would make it grand-slam! YAB had so much votes for this poll mainly because it was just aired last October... It's just like having new toys. We give more importance to the new one and less to the old ones. But seriously, come to think of it... I think if popularity wise, BOF should be in first place since it was really popular.. even if the drama ended months ago. Like here in the Philippines, BOF will be aired again because of requests fromt he viewers. Don't get me wrong, I love YAB. [I looove TK seriously! I'd really miss him. JGS, hands down! really brilliant acting! I think the last episode sure hell was the worst. HEHEHEH. I just wanted a more closure between TK and MN... well I do hope that they made the ending hanging, in preparation for season 2! *fingers crossed]

Favorite Couple? I'd go with TK and MN! They are just sooo cute! less cheesy when they're together! I love 'em every bit! I'm also not a fan of Jun Pyo and Jan Di. I'm forver gonna be JunKyung ♥!

And I just want to commend bout Lee Min Ho... I really agree with you guys, he should win the breakthrough award... Nobody knew who Lee Min Ho was until he became Gu Jun Pyo! I got really depressed when I heard that Jo In Sung would be heading to the army... but luckily, as if fate had planned this ^^ Lee Min Ho came and just swept me of my feet :)) I couldn't get over him. Seriously. :DD Hope to see him in a much better show than BOF. :D

Vital statistics:
Old enough to be a grandmother ... if I had been on the ball and had children by age 25.
Female.
Semi-retired (because I can) professional.

Definitely, not a fan-girly teen-ager.

My favorite drama for 2009 was "Tamra Island", followed by a very close 2nd, "You Are Beautiful".

The reason that they are my favorite dramas: My maternal instinct must have kicked in because, in both dramas, I thought that I would be proud to have the leading characters as my children.

I'm not disparaging the merits of any drama. I'm simply saying that these two dramas are my favorite. (They do give off the feeling of a warm comfy blanket, on a cold winter's night.)

As always, thank you to Sarah for another wonderful year of this blog. Happy Holidays to everyone. May 2010 bring us even more great K-dramas.

Ahh, don't really like all the negativism here. If you don't have something nice to say, then keep it in your mind. No one likes a party pooper. It is your own right to label a certain drama that did not appeal to you "overrated," but keep in mind that this drama probably touch the hearts of many, and what you said has a possibly of hurting others (even if it wasn't your intention). The fans did not shove their "favorite" drama(s) at anyone and/or FORCED anyone to watch it. So if you hated it, that's your opinion. But please, for the sake of others, take your bitterness elsewhere.

Sorry if I sound like a know-it-all. I certainty do not. But I do understand the feeling that many fans also feel by unkind words antis have left. It's a feeling no one likes, so thoughtfully remind yourself that before you post. :)

YAB is a winner for me!

I know that most of people mention Jang Geun Seuk's great acting in this drama, and I'm not denying that either. However, Park Shin Hye should get more credit as well. Her acting skill is up par with JGS's. Without GMN's character, TK's character won't be appealed much. The chemistry between TK and GMN is strongly and naturally present.

FAVE ALTERNATE PAIRING

I don't think Hong-ki and Geun-seok should be a contender in this poll. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the two but off screen together not on screen in the drama itself. Where as Soeulmates where AWESOME together in the drama as fav alternate pair. Just my two cents.

@318
Thank you, you spoke my mind !!!
YAB all the way, the best drama in 2009, the best drama ever and also the most underated drama of the year :(!!!
Just as much I love JGS, I love PSH more. I never knew about her but I have learnt and grow to love her after YAB. She is so talented for such a young age (19 now, and the 1st lead was at 16, with a Japanese girl role). She is adorable and modest. She deserve more love, we all know that no one can play GMN better than PSH. Just because she was paired to work with all the hot guys, people doesn't love her. Please be fair!!! That 's just her job. A 19y/o girl who can act, sing, and dance well , I can't help but admire her and I am 25, female who getting my 2nd degree in uni btw

@JB
Can you please update any news about PSH, it seems like to me the the Korean show biz doesn't give much love for our lovely GMN since Uee is in the spot lights, JGS is busy with interviews and love calls, HK is back with the band, YW is in a live show and prepare for his band debut. What happend to the one and only "moon"? It seem so quiet on her side... the girl dessert more love and support
Please JB, you know you love her too :P
