Okay, so there are a lot of complaints that the 2009 Drama Poll is too biased because You’re Beautiful is winning so heavily. I have my own reasons for thinking that’s not true — how can you get upset that people are voting for their favorite drama when that’s what the poll asks? — but I got to wondering how the results might look different if you could vote for THREE, rather than ONE, drama. (I’ll add this to the big poll post as well.)
So. Let’s test this out:

I’m dumbfounded at the YB bashing… Suddenly I’m now a teenager and the only reason I voted for my favourite drama (YB) is b’cos it just ended? Hmm, for a moment there, I actually thought that I’m a 30+ mother..
Seriously, the reason why YB is my favourite is that as some people mentioned, it makes me laugh, cry together with the characters. Yes, it is flawed, but it doesn’t pretend not to be. I love that it is not afraid to make fun at itself.
You’re Beautiful without any doubt in mind WAS, IS, and WILL BE my number 1 choice! I believe, the poll says it all.
And my second choice is Brilliant Legacy.
WOW! Everybody is getting emotional
Just want to be the first to greet all of you guys a very ‘MERRY CHRISTMAS”
esp.JB and family…Cheers!
this is sad… but ppl are i nclined to have their own opinions so who cares
u like what u like..full stop.
and there are lots more ppl who like YB than the ones who dont
all actors and dramas and movies will have their anti’s
let it be
i enjoy what i enjoy right?

your beautiful ftw XD
@255 cecilia,
I completely agree, and thanks for the link for info on ordering the fans-only director’s cut dvd set. You accidentally used a semi-colon instead of a colon, and the link as is will bring you to a page on the Wikipedia site. Here’s the corrected link:

@247 norma,
Thanks! I’m happy(and a bit relieved) to be in the company of other “over-the-hill” drama fans/addicts! Would younger fans have to call us “sunbae”? LOL
I agree that a Park Shin Hye/Lee Min Ho pairing probably would not have quite the same chemistry as our beloved Park Shin Hye/Jang Geun Seok pairing…but I’d still be curious to see how they’d be together if the opportunity presented itself…wouldn’t you? =)
Actually, I’d like to see Park Bo Young, the actress from the really fun movie, “Speedy Scandal”, be paired up with Lee Min Ho in a rom com/trendy drama. From what I understand, they’re already good friends. Park Bo Young was excellent in that movie, she’s about the same age as Park Shin Hye(19), and she’s also quite talented(plays guitar, and sings, too). But, Park Shin Hye is still my favorite of the two(had to throw that out there!).
@248 kdrama-newbie,
Thanks, I’m touched that my comment may have brought a smile to you. Wasn’t “My Girl” a great first drama to watch?? Heck, it’s a great drama, regardless! It’d still be my overall favorite if “Coffee Prince” and “You’re Beautiful” didn’t exist! And what a wonderful way for you and your future mom-in-law to bond! =)
Oh, and btw, I don’t think you’re that computer challenged if you were able to convert your downloaded video files to the dvd format…good job! ;>)
lol this is so strange cause i think other than seon deok, shining inheritance did really really well in korea ratings wise
LSG/HHJ~~~
@ sukispop sunbae
oh yeah! totally! “my girl” is a great 1st kdrama to watch…5 months ago, my fiance’s mom and i just watch it coz a patient of her cant stop raving about kdramas and recommended it, alas! before we knew it, we were so hooked and asking for more
at 1st, i was hesitant to recommend YAB to her, with TK’s guy liner, eccentric outfits, hair styles and all…but watching her crack up on the 1st episode sealed the deal for me…TK definitely grew on her, heck! she didnt even mind the guy liner at all, and even found him cute, (cant blame her though) hihihi!…definitely now, my future mom-in-law now and i are closer than ever!
question: is the director’s cut dvd subbed in english?…thanks in advance
@ sukispop : forgot to thank u for ur compliment, kamsahamida sunbae!
…isnt it great that i learned new stuff all for the love of YAB?! *lol*
ur bonding moments with ur daughter is soo heart warming…u must miss ur daughters a lot now…when i was in med school, i missed my family terribly…maybe next time u can watch YAB together, that will be a blast
@261 kdrama-newbie: yes the director’s cut will have English subs. Cecilia from soompi has confirmed it. Here’s the blog that Cecilia created again.
http://minamdvd.wordpress.com/
@ sweetaddiction: thank u soo much for the info
yay! glad it has english sub
@54 LOL that’s why YB is winning the poll; it’s because we’re “obsessed” with YB or in other words it’s our FAVOURITE drama. who cares if it is not “SUCCESSFUL” it’s still our favourite. we answer what javabeans is asking. your english comprehension fails.
YAB PWND!
may i ask why you left out Take Care of Young Lady? If this is just a test why would you leave this drama even if realize you’d been critical of this one javabeans? peace!
i agree with ellen…Lady Castle should have been included and let people here have their choice! this site has been so biased even when Lady Castle was still showing — give credit where credit is due. I prefer Lady Castle than the other ones here like Tamra Island or Boys Before Flowers…..of course we’re entitled to our opinion but at least whether you like a drama or not you should include all 2009 dramas of the year and not left out one simply because you and your fans on this site did not favour that drama! i love queen of housewives and find Yoon sang hyun to be an outstanding actor and in Lady Castle YEH and YSH were both great, and this happens to be one of my fave dramas of all time!
thank you
@267 jinjoo
if u go back to the before poll, u will see JB did mention that she couldn’t add all the 2009 drama in the poll. if there isn’t drama that u like then don’t vote. we don’t need ur vote anyway; by the way, this is just for fun not like for award, so there no need to include every drama. please think before u say something
i voted for tamra the island, brilliant legacy, and you’re beautiful
i think boys before flowers was great but it was just the fact that i had already seen the japanese version and i knew what was going to happen
tamra the island was different from dramas ive seen. it was like set in old times but kind of modern with the whole idea! i loved it! so refreshing! i was very sad when they cut down the episodes
oh brilliant legacy… this is the drama i couldn’t stop watching at allllllllll
lee seung gi’s acting was beyond my expectations and just like its high rating, it got me hooked! i also liked how it showed previews for the next week for almost every single week!
you’re beautiful has the majorities of the votes from what i see and im not too surprised. the drama had good looking boys, a modern setting, simple storyline, funny and cute. i know the rating was low because of IRIS but whatever, i truly enjoyed it.
im watching angel’s temptation right now and i like that one too. the plot is so fast! but it is very predictable and so i didn’t vote for it
the other drama that im watching right now is will it snow on christmas. i know i watch too much drama, but this is what i do on my free time haha
the acting for this drama has been amazing so far!
i love romance/melodramas and so this type of drama suits me
the plotline has been moving along fairly quickly too and i love it when dramas don’t drag on. draggy is annoying
i also love go soo (very very good looking. like sexier version of oh ji ho) although he looks really short compared to the other main guy (im totally blanking on his name)
if anyone is looking for good melodrama/romance genre drama, i highly suggest will it snow on christmas! the acting’s great (han ye seul is gorgeous!) and even though it’s kind of new, it’s really amazing so far!
@ womanizing Tiger…
labeling viewers preference to stereotypes seems to be foolish and idiotic.
Now I’m supposed to be a teenager, who is into idol groups and who have fan girl mentality just because I like You’re Beautiful. I really beg to disagree to be fitted into a stereotypical box of what they think YB viewers are… Am I supposed to watch angel’s temptation and queen of housewives only just because I reached a certain age? If all YB viewers have fangirl mentality, should we have watched Heading to the Ground instead?
YB viewers are not mindless bunch of teenagers that you want to picture us to be. Yes, i admit YB has fan based in the teenage group but has viewers from other age group as well
@ mamamia and Kdrama-newbie… I ,too, am a 30+ doctor who loves YB.( So definitely NOT a teenager anymore!) I like the drama because it offered me a good balance of comedy and melodrama that managed to sustain my interest and was a good stress reliever for me.
On YB being overrated … how could something that did not do well in ratings be overrated… isn’t that contradicting.
On YB being shallow… I admit YB is far from being perfect but I think it was actually a smartly written drama. I like YB because of its attention to details, I like the metaphors used, how dialogues has reference to previous once, the smart inserts of parodies and I especially love how YB is not afraid to poke fun of the celebrity world, the kdramaworld and poke fun at clichés and add twist to it . So if you just watch it at face value, these details would just pass you by and I would understand how YB would appear shallow to someone who watches it superficially.
YB was the only drama that I got hooked from the first episode and had the actual patience to follow and wait for weekly. I usually watch dramas in marathon and start to watch them when the series is about to be over, if not done already. So that I could press the fast forward button on dull parts, if not the stop and eject button if the drama couldn’t sustain my interest
I would have picked Partner as my second and He Who Cant Get Married as my third choice … ( see my choices are not just trendy dramas… therefore I do no fit that stereotype, that some are selling to us, that only people who watch trendy dramas goes to this blog), hence …
I voted Brilliant Legacy as second instead and BOF as third. I know BOF is such a hot mess and its really really really far from being the best, but its still part of my favorites because it brought back my interest in kdramas after a long hiatus.
And yes, favorite is different from best. I think the objective of the poll is to let us choose what we like and I don’t think its right to shame us in expressing what we like by categorizing us into labels that is just idiotic.
1. CITY HALL
2.CITY HALL
3.CITY HALL
HAHAHAHHAHA…CAUSE CHA SEUNG WON IS SO AWESOME…HIHIHIHI…
Despite the option for three votes, I only voted for YAB, LOL!
edit: I second couchpotato_md ^^v
I had a hard time picking. I wanted to pick the popular hits that were trendy. Because I new my votes might match along with main stream. Instead I went with what were my FAVORITES. I’m pretty much a korean-otaku and dedicate most of my time when I’m not working to reading articles, blogs, fan accounts, fan translations, watching dramas and variety programs. I enjoy learning about the Korean entertainment industry. I’ve known about DramaBeans for a long while, since I first got into dramas back in ’04, but I have to admit it was the recaps of “You’re Beautiful” which kept me coming back. I loved the style and efficient layout of the recaps and found myself checking out the other blog topics.
But most of what I said above is off topic.
My favorite 3 dramas were:
You’re Beautiful: I fell in love with the first episode and often watched raw/unsubbed episodes not being able to understand korean, because the antics were so well acted I could understand contextually what was happening. Especially with the help of the Re-caps. I understand that this drama is what you could term a cult-classic. It has a strong fan following that it formed during it’s airing. There are many moments where the viewer can go “Awww how I wish that would happen to me” or reminds them of some real life experience from their youth. I know I found myself glued to the interactions between Park Shin Hye as Go Mi Nam to Jung Yong-hwa as Shin Woo. I wanted that relationship to work, because I found it sweet and endearing how he showered her in little doses of affection, while keeping the benefactor of those gifts/deeds a secret. I always wanted to be mysteriously taken care of. My needs fulfilled before I even knew I had any. There is some weak plot points, but I also know a lot of it was edited out due to 16-episode run. I hope some of those weak points will be reaffirmed with the newly added scenes in the Director’s Cut Box Set.
City Hall: I found myself wondering what to watch after You’re Beautiful ended. I wanted something that was going to be on the same level of keeping my interest. I found myself looking through my dramas and saw that I hadn’t watched City Hall. While it was airing I’d read articles about how hard the egg throwing scene had been for Kim Sun Ah. I’d seem some previews or little bits of peoples recaps of the episode, but nothing to spark my interest in watching it devotedly live. I’m happy that I chose this as my next drama after You’re Beautiful. It was amazing witty. I love Kim Sun Ah’s dramas, I’ve yet to watch one where I didn’t walk away thinking “Wow this drama really is great! I should recommend it to so and so” This drama kept me interested after the dreaded 7th episode. I don’t know why, but if I don’t get captivated by a drama by the 7th episode I stop watching it. Even though I’m usually halfway through and should just finish it. I will stop watching a drama if it’s yet to get past the point the synopsis has already explained to me. This drama had great moments between Kim Sun Ah’s character Mi Rae and Cha Seung Won’s character Jo Gook. I found myself rooting for them, even though I don’t like to support adultery type relationships. (And since Jo Gook was engaged I felt like it was adultery). For me, a character must evolve past some kind of hurdle she has in the beginning. It’s a story about her overcoming something that’s being holding her back from succeeding in life to her fullest. Jo Gook gives Mi Rae that edge and helplessly falls for her charm even against his will. That he would turn such a 180 was kind of shocking to me. But I love when a man will change everything about who he is because he falls in love.
My third choice was Shining Inheritance/Brilliant Legacy. Again, I didn’t watch this devotedly from the first episode. I’ve never seen Seung Gi acting, but I’d watched episode of 1N2D that he is a regular on, and while he was filming Brilliant Legacy, I kept wondering about the little jokes they would make about his character and so forth. I finally sat down and watched it all the way through. It’s a bit longer drama than the two I previously have talked about. I found myself passionately involved in the search for her brother. Constantly switching who I wanted her to end up with, who would win her heart. I wanted her father to come back and fix the misunderstanding much earlier in the drama, for Seung Gi to admit his feelings for her earlier too so that they’d have more of a solid relationship than they have in the ending episodes. I have never hated any character as passionately as I hated the Step-mother. What she did, was beyond my capacity for understanding. There is no excusable reason for her to do what she did.
BTW Totally felt couchpotato_md’s post which is why I commented in the first place. It was like I was reading something I would write myself.
>_> I seem to have ranted a bit so I’ll end my comment here.
Ok my post is like half a year late but I really want to say my stand. People!! Stop bashing yab. Stop saying tt we should realize tt yab is not a good show blah blah. Shut up!! People have different tastes so why can’t u respect tt?? My entire family LOVES YAB so it’s like u are insulting my family. Stop thinking we are stupid or childish or we are biased. It’s already 10 months since it aired and all if us still LOVES YAB like before. I’m sorry for being so rude but you can’t blame me for blowing at my too when u insult our tastes.
