Go Soo: “I didn’t know this role would be this painful”

You’d be hard-pressed to watch SBS’s Will It Snow For Christmas without falling under lead actor Go Soo‘s spell. Even if you counted yourself a fan before this drama premiered last month, there’s something about his presence in this show that commands attention, and fans are definitely taking notice. Here’s a recent interview with Go Soo — enjoy!

Popularity through the Kang-jin character of SBS’s Will It Snow For Christmas?

There’s a saying that if you want to make it big in the entertainment industry, you need a pure, clear gaze.

In this frigid winter with temperatures falling below 10 degrees, a pure, brilliant gaze struck the television airwaves, as though with a loud “clank.” Netizens have coined several nicknames for the owner of this stare, responding fervently to the source of their “Go Soo flu,” “Go Soo pangs,” “Go-vid,” “Go-neu-nim.”

Go Soo pangs refers to that painful longing he evokes in fans, while Go-vid is derived from David (as in Michaelangelo’s), and Go-neu-nim is my personal favorite since it’s absolutely ridiculous, combining his name with the word for God (ha-neu-nim). It’s equivalent to saying “God-Soo.”

Go Soo, who plays the lead in SBS’s Wednesday-Thursday drama Will It Snow For Christmas, is capturing the hearts of women viewers with his expressions and gazes that convey deep sadness and also endless reflection.

“Kang-jin is by nature very appealing. And good-looking. Haha, I’m sorry. He’s clean, upright, and passionate. He also has a talented gift for architectural design. The female viewers like seeing Kang-jin treating Ji-wan well.”

Of course, the Kang-jin character himself is handsome and cool. But it’s because Kang-jin met Go Soo that he shines. Formerly thin and of slight build, Go Soo used to look delicate, but after coming back from military service and entering his thirties [he’s 31], he has shed his previous image. He has filled out his build and upgraded his image with acting that has matured, from a good-looking pure youth to a trustworthy, lovely man.

“You could say that in the past, I asserted my intent first, but now I deliberate endlessly about how I can best express the conditions that have been given to me. Also, in the past I used to agonize over whether this was the right path for me, but last year I felt that acting is really my path. If I’ve changed, it’s because of that.”

The title Will It Snow For Christmas? gives a bright feeling, but the plot is heartbreaking. With dramas like I’m Sorry, I Love You, A Love To Kill, and Thank You, writer Lee Kyung-hee has always plucked the heartstrings, and Kang-jin and Ji-wan’s painful love is the same way.

“I liked that Kang-jin isn’t a character who is only soft and warm with women, and I was drawn to what he went through in his adolescence. I wanted to try a drama that wasn’t easy on a fundamental level, that was a little dark and serious. But I didn’t know it would be this painful. The further we get in the drama, the more painful it becomes. I didn’t know it would be this difficult.”

Growing up with a mother who is a cafe hostess and making it to the elite ranks, Kang-jin has a first love in his high school days, Ji-wan, who leaves suddenly. Unable to forget her, they have a fateful reunion a decade later. However, the reason for Ji-wan’s departure is because her brother died in the river after diving in to retrieve Kang-jin’s lost pendant. Although Kang-jin finds the Ji-wan he’d dreamed of finding, discovering this tragic truth torments him.

“Kang-jin reunites with Ji-wan after a lot of difficulty, but soon afterward he makes the painful realization that he is a source of pain for Ji-wan, and tries to distance himself from her. They confirm their love again in the January 7 episode (#10), but… you’ll have to watch the future episodes to find out what happens. [Laughs]”

He’s introverted. He’s quiet and thoughtful. He’s also an upright man. Within a loud, boisterous entertainment industry, he has a personality that makes it easy to be hurt.

“Before and after my military service, whenever I took a break from work, I deliberated over whether I had to continue acting. When I struggled with work, I even thought that this actor’s job was too much for me to handle. I thought, do I really have to go back there again and live that frantic life and lose myself? But I decided to do it to support myself. In the past, I found it a burden just being in the spotlight, but now I accept it, and I’m trying to enjoy it.”

In the past, he has mostly taken on characters who carry the weight of life on their shoulders, such as in Piano (2001), The Age of Innocence (2002), When a Man Loves a Woman (2004), and Green Rose (2005). Following his army discharge, he has dived into deeply shadowed acting with the film Into the White Night and this drama.

However, in his rookie days, he showed his oddball side in sitcoms like Jump, Family Honor, and Nonstop. Even now, although he can be cold, sometimes he tosses out a joke and provokes a laugh.

“I still pursue roles that are a bit difficult emotionally. Of course, upbeat acting is also difficult, but right now I keep feeling drawn to roles where I’m driven to the edge of a cliff. I did comedy a lot in my early debut days. I think I’ll do it again a while later.”

He said of acting, “The process of creating a character is interesting, and I like focusing on something in order to do it. I enjoy being able to go all-in to make a character.”

But he finds it awkward to call himself an “actor.”

There are several different words in Korean to describe an actor or performer. First, there’s “talent” (텔런트), which is a general word to describe a person who acts or appears on television as an entertainer. Then there’s “yeon-ki-ja” (연기자), which literally means “one who acts.” You can act (yeon-ki), but to paraphrase the great Tyra herself, you can do the verb (to act) without being the noun (Actor). One doesn’t earn the distinction of being a Serious Actor (“bae-woo,” or 배우) without proving oneself; a distinguished minority can lay claim to that word, such as Song Kang-ho, Sol Kyung-gu, Jeon Do-yeon, Go Hyun-jung… This is the word (bae-woo) that Go Soo uses here.

“An ‘actor’ is a path I’d like to take but can’t. I think it’ll be difficult in the future as well. What I consider to be an actor holds a very significant meaning for me. Could I actually become a serious actor? I’m just doing my best with the acting that has been given to me.”

(Also, MINE! Hahaha. You’ll never beat me to it.)

Since there's an ICOMYM club, which I can't really claim membership in since I don't think I have reached that age yet because otherwise I'd be looking at quite literally children, is there a ICOMOM club too ("Inappropriate Crushes On Much Older Men")? I think I can claim membership in that club. Since, unfortunately, it seems that for me, KJH et others are essentially ahjusshi-level to me.

Or ICOMM ("Inappropriate Crushes On Married Men")? That one, too. I swear, I've watched enough Family Outing to have Yoo Jaesuk as an ICOMM (LOL). Why is he so funny? Actually, I can't really think of many ICOMMs...

Or it could just simply be like an Ahjusshi Crush club. As simple as that. LOL. Sums up all of the above.

WAIT WAIT. Do my eyes deceive me and NOBODY has staked claim to WON BIN?! Yeah, okay, now Won Bin = MINE. Maybe I'm just desperate to stake my claims on older guys, since nobody seems to be fighting the younger "children" (aka Kim Bum, Jung Ilwoo, etc.) with me... I so wanted to claim JGS along in the younger "children" category, but I'm afraid a catfight will break out - clearly a pacifist (yeah right). So I'll share JGS... LOL.

Won Bin is like that elusive Unicorn. He's yours if you can spot him and better yet, actually catch him.

Though I recollect that maybe belleza is cheating on that no good father of her twins Lee Byung-hun with Won Bon on the side? :-P

This thread went from Go Soo's acting in WISC to having blogger wars on whose man/men is for themselves. Funny...and entertaining... :D

There should be a separate thread (separate from the weekly Open Threads) that should be entitled "Who's Up For (Their) Grabs?", where prominent bloggers and...all else..would get their own dibs...

anyways, I don't wanna claim anyone, as that would be suicidal; claiming one would declare war on another, or perhaps, many many others...

...and there are so many to choose from... :P :D

@74
Hajong is one of Mishil's many sons (compared to Misaeng, who said that he had a hundred) by Lord Sejong, her official husband. Now I'm saying official since Mishil is known (if you want to read the Hwarang Segi) to have many liaisons (3 kings also... :O), and if I banter on, (you wouldn't believe the next one) Mishil even had *TOOT* with her own brother Misaeng!

Wow. Quoting GS, I don't know this threat would be this painful LOL! You guys are seriously rocking the thread! The last time JB posted a news (picspam more like it) of GS, there was almost a wrestlemania going on. And now, another GS threat, it's no longer wresting... but more like a world war is going on in staking who's whose. LOL! I can even visualize the hair-pulling, chair wrecking and people running and yelling MINE MINE MINE all over the place. Hahaha.

I know I''m late in marking MINE all over GS, but am claiming him still! And claiming Won Bin too! And Chun Hee! They're MINE yeah. And I do plan to be the evil second female lead who'd try to steal all the male leads by all means possible. Oh, I will! Let this end in a tragedy! LOL!

I would jump into the fray to claim Hyun Bin but since I have too much respect for Samsooki I will be noble and self sacrificing :P I will only sigh from afar and compose odes to those dimples, those glorious, luminous dimples.

Did anyone claim Jae Hee, Jung Gyu Woon or Uhm Tae Woong, if not MINE!!
I sat through 8 episodes of the torture that was Hateful, but Once Agian for
Jung Gyu Woon. I mean that's love.

I hope they bring soju and lots and lots of bromance. BFFs? It's like the gods are smiling down at us and say, hey, I created perfect specimens of manhood and they will also love each other to bits and star in many many print campaigns for men's clothing that will never look as good on any man alive except on these two guys.

I shudder at Open Thread #118 Friday 1/15.

Rather than showing up in the morning, I may wait til the afternoon, so I can step over the MINE! carnage and the bodies strewn about.

JB, perhaps inadvertently, created a many-headed monster when she claimed Lee Jung Jae, Kang Ji Hwan, Yoon Kye Sang and now, Go Soo, as her own, because it gave a reasonable implication and therefore a greenlight to start the California Gold Rush for actors.

Plus, there are other issues that people just aren't considering. For example, there are plenty of actors left, and how will those actors feel if they aren't chosen?

For example, Kang Nam Gil (look at this list... Star in my Heart with Choi Jin Shil!!, Sad Love Song, Love Story at Harvard, Goong, Bad Family, Capital Scandal, King and I, Who Are You, Gourmet, Return of Iljimae, Creating Destiny, Jejoongwon...) is still open. Ladies? anyone?

Another excellent actor, Ahn Seok Hwan, who did such popular dramas as DGCH, My Girl, With Amusement, Capital Scandal, HGD, Hometown Legends x2, Painter of the Wind, BOF, Kyung Sook's Father, Ja Myung Go, and now, Chuno!)... as far as I know, he's also not claimed.

And what about Kim Gab Soo? Or Choi Bool Am (who was in Smile, You, Gourmet, Sweet Spy, Goong, I Really Really Like You... )

And he with the over-developed chocolate abs himself, Kwon Sang Woo?

Hmmm...methinks there is a bit of ranking by attractivity going on....

um, duh?

(spoken with affection, of course!)

just as the list isn't solely about good looks (which is why Song Seung-heon isn't on mine, for instance), it's not only about acting prowess, either. it's talent, charisma, looks, personality, and also appealing resume of characters. why isn't Choi Bool-am on my list? Well, he's like, 80 years old, and i'm not going to imagine myself fantasy-married to my grandpa! Kang Nam-gil is funny, but his characters tend to be ridiculous, not droolworthy. Ahn Seok-hwan is like the guy you want for your kdrama dad, not as your honey! and so on.

@124, ockoala, wow... smoookin'! i wonder if he is still doing that or if that was mostly a movie/photo shoot prop. I myself quit cold turkey... I still miss it. A yummy part of my day is gone.

I think I'll start off Open Thread 118 by claiming Choi Bool Am. He played a great loser ex-con in Sweet Spy, the only person I cared about the entire drama series.

btw, I think personality (apart from acting ability, mostly, because very few actors can just revert their personality in addition to playing a certain character) plays a big part in who I like in actors.

Ahn Seok Hwan's characters always seem to be painted with a bit of dignity, no matter what the role. And Kang Nam Gil always has a tinge of comedy even to serious scenes.

I like Binnie because he has a touch of Binnie-ness to him, whether he is Heonnie in MNKISS, Scruffie in Snow Queen, or Fitfh Republic of Korea gangster sociopath in Friend Our Legend. It's like a disdain for the world who might be opposed to him, but gentler and smoother.

And KJH has an openness about him that I like, try to incorporate into my own persona. You can read him like a book, and that's okay because he doesn't have anything to hide. He was like Geum Soon, Save The Last Dance, and HGD...

So the BFF combo of BSB-GS: a double date with them would entail getting drunk at a pojanmacha, then they would give you piggyback ride (I call dibs on the back of........ah, can't choose!) to the Namsan cablecar and you would ride up together while they looked at stars and then "stared" at you for a long time, then you would get dropped home with a nice kiss on the forehead.

So the BFF combo of JWS-LJJ: a double date with them would entail getting picked up on motorcycles and heading to the beach with bottles of soju and whiskey, talking existential convos and also getting stared at pretty long and hard, and then getting the bejesus kissed out of you, and then maybe losing your guys to a couple of cougars (female ones).

Just my imagination overload.

@ samsooki

Since you love Binnie so much, would you care to watch Ireland and let me know what you think? I'm tempted but then scared away. Maybe you're up for the challenge?

I came face to face with Won Bin in one of the foyers at the National Film Theatre (now BFI) in London last November. It turns out he was over here for the screening of Mother at the London Film Festival (London has a dissonant quality, that of being one of the most mercilessly relentless, dense and gritty capitals in the world while it simultaneously feels like a back-water town filled with rustic peasants in their Sunday best dreaming of going to London. It is a town that can organise a world festival with the leisurely pace of a yokel-ville. None of your Cannes and Mostras, just a huge amount of films piled high and from every conceivable geographical spot of this world, with thousands of people mingling and loitering by our murky, stinky river, without entourages or praetorians in tow, and with their clothes on). My friend and I -another Korean cinematography and TV drama ardent proselyte- losing our usual phlegm, screamed out his name as we literally bumped into him, and the poor guy nearly dropped his flute (the one into which you decant effervescent potables, not the musical instrument) on the floor. I think he was utterly astonished at being recognised by two Limeys, before the screening of his film. His allure quickly wore its subdued disguise in order to survive the close encounter with the gobsmacked strangers.

As I said in my first post above, ownership and claims to ownership are not permitted in the sphere where I and the gods of my idolatry move (it would be hubris). So, in random order and without any care for nonsense like age and the like, here is my Göttermorgendämmerung: Hyun Bin, Won Bin, Cha Seun Won, Go Soo, Lee Jung Jae (has anyone mentioned him above? What are you waiting for, you vine-clad and possessive Bacchantae -and Pan samsooki? Pounce, feast!), Kim Soo Hyun (he's only a few years younger than I but he makes me feel like a paedophile, like Zeus snatching Ganymede, every time I think of him), Jo Jae Hyeon (for making love feel like an exploration of the macabre and the macabre like an exploration of love), Joo Jin Mo (oh, the voice, the voice! The man was born to play Moses or God), Shim Ji-Ho (he of Green Chair, where the actors were far better than the film); the two leads, Kim Nam Gil and Lee Yeong Hoon, of the wonderful No Regret; and months before fans of YAB (I'm not one) discovered 'the Manager', I spotted him first in a very interesting film called Road Movie, and on the strength of that film he too must be included in the pantheon, together with his extraordinary co-star, the protagonist of that film, Hwan Jeong Min.

And how can one's goddesses go unmentioned? It would be an affront to the complex dimensions of Eros, finding a register through strong attractions and attachments to those ladies, if they went unacknowledged. So here they are, the female deities , who have educated my sensibility and imagination: Lee Mi Sook, Jeon Do Yeon, Kim Hye Ja, Kim Sun Ah, Kim Hye Soo, Son Yen Jin (in the challenging roles), Um Jung Hwa, Ha Ji Won, Seo Jeong.

WHOA .. In desperation I am at a thread that was last live 13 years ago!!!!

@javabeans you are a life saver ..

Thank you @javabeans for this WHOLE 5 pages of Go Soo ;-p

I caught GO-FLU .. Soo-Floo .. and in 2023 Go-Vid has a WHOLE NEW meaning.

I had no clue of this Go-neu-nim's existence until I went hunting on the Kdrama archival dens looking up stuff from pre-2005,
I am like 300 plus Kdrama veteran (watched / dropped / tasted / skimmed / hopped through) .. SO imagine my surprise.

I googled and didn't find much to read .. and then of course came to Dramabeans for a fix.

I picked Will it Snow for Christmas for my to-watch list and sat back to do the 2 episode test.
The show begins with two of the now top notch stars (they alway had the acting chops I now realize - because in this they are talented newbies, I think), and I kept wondering which adult actor would do justice to Kim Soo Hyun's act.

I'd never heard anyone raving about Go Soo ever .. it was an unfamiliar name ..

Guess what .. I stopped watching WISFC .. after a few eps .. WHY???

It's like that box of chocolate you opened and just that first bite made you go delirious with joy, and after you had a few, you STOPPED.
No, this has to be saved .. Saved UNTIL you know that there are a few more boxes you can find, that this is not the last or only one.

So I type "Go Soo" in MyDramalist and start to look for 'high rated ones" which for me is anything at the very least, a 7.0 plus.

I found LOVE911 - a film.
Devoured it.

I am a sucker for the brooding, handsome devils who hold the ONE woman in their heart. Go Soo was robbing my insides effortlessly.

HIGHLY recommend a watch.

However before I went back to WIFSC (rating above 8.0 from MDL) I wanted to check out at least ONE drama of his .. even a lower rated one would do .. SO I picked "When A Man Loves a Woman".

YESS I am a diehard "relationship, romance, Melo, drama" genre person.

Triangles are MY THANG.
But it has to be a GOOD triangle .. solid!! where the third vertice is STRONG .. as STRONG as the other two.
Often that fails .. and the 3rd vertice is there just to serve an SL role .. and not quite woven into a story essential.

Eg. of triangles which were strong, IMO?
- What happened in Bali?
- Another Miss Oh Hae
- My Lovely Sam Soon
- Me, Flower Too
- Innocent Man

If you watched these you'll know what I mean.
I'll safely plonk "When a Man Loves a Woman" in the basket.

by the end of it, Go Soo fever was raging so high that I FOR the FIRST time decided to test run a below-7-MDL rated ( 6.9 ) and it had no reviews either .. the counter said some 100 plus viewers

(I am an excellent show dropper .. means if it doesn't work I'll drop - I was not planning to waste time if it didn't click and return to WIFSC)

What was the Drama? "Age of Innocence"

How was the Age of Innocence not a HUGE DRAW?

Go Soo was working his way through the roles...

<<<<>>>>> @javabeans

What was the Drama? "Age of Innocence"

How was the Age of Innocence not a HUGE DRAW?

Go Soo was working his way through the roles that WIFCS hints at .. first unfolding in "When a man loves a woman" and then ripening in "Age of Innocence"

Age of Innocence is a show so begging a textbook analysis of character and story. Go Soo and his equally Strong Support Leads are cast to the T by the script - direction - acting

I haven't found a forum to be able to participate in .. and I have been searching since yesterday after completing the show.

You know that bubbling and lonely feeling inside when you are dying to talk to, listen to someone about the show and can't find anyone (real life or online).

I've left a gasping comment - not review - (the only one as of now) on MDL .. under "AGE OF INNOCENCE"

If you put a thermometer to the comment it'll record a high fever.

If this is not ENOUGH to tempt you to check the show out .. coming from a 2.5 year and 300 + Kdrama Addict (that's like a show every 3 days ;-p) ..
Hmm .. my lonely feel will keep roaming online like a "Kishin"
