Idol star Taecyeon up for Cinderella’s Sister

Huh. After unconfirmed reports initially spread the rumors, now it has been announced that idol star Taecyeon of boy band 2PM will be making his acting debut in the upcoming Cinderella’s Sister.

This news was confirmed on January 25 via phone interview with a source at the drama’s production company, who said, “To be exact, Taecyeon’s casting was confirmed today, the 25th. The contract hasn’t been finalized, but we have made a verbal agreement. Although talks didn’t take a very long time, both Taecyeon’s side and the production side have made this decision after plenty of deliberation. Both sides think he’ll bring out the personality he’s shown in variety and entertainment programs in a natural way.”

Not being a follower of 2PM, I can’t greet this news with any excitement, and in fact I’m more wary than eager. But, as the drama has by now cast three strong actors in the lead roles — Moon Geun-young as Cinderella’s stepsister (who happens to be the not-quite-villainous protagonist), Seo Woo as the kind Cinderella who seeks revenge on her sister, and Chun Jung-myung as the main love interest — I’m taking this one in stride.

Regarding casting a singer, the production source said, “We can’t say that there were no concerns over the low rate of success for singers-turned-actors. However, Taecyeon isn’t the lead for this drama so we’re expecting him to have synergy with the other actors like Moon Geun-young, Seo Woo, and Chun Jung-myung.”

In the drama, Taecyeon will play an innocent character named Jung-woo who maintains a steadfast love for Moon Geun-young’s Eun-jo, leading to a love triangle with her and Chun Jung-myung. Cinderella’s Sister will follow Chuno and premiere on March 31.

i love taecyeon, but i am a lil uncertain about this. hey at least he can offer eye-candy to us fan girls if his acting isn't excellent, but hopefully not as dreadful as hyunjoong's.

just curious, how do dramas select their casts? do actors have to audition for the roles or do they just get chosen by the PDs?

please don't be as bad as that guy from ss501 that starred in Boys over Flowers. He got better by the end but it was painful to watch him for several episodes.

The fact that this kid is going to be acting opposite three well seasoned professionals will make his flaws even that more noticeable. But I must admit, he definitely looks the part of the tall, handsome, charming man in love.

I don't know if Taec's a good actor, but I'm hoping for the best (you never know ,right?) But, if he turns out to be good, this might be one of the rare times I will suffer from 2nd lead syndrome hehe..

can i just one question to make sure?
so Moon Geun-young (stepsister) is the main heroine or main female lead, and Chun Jung-myung is her respective male lead right? interesting and sounds like a lot of fun?
even though having Taecyeon in this drama does nothing for me, I'm still won over the other three leads.

This is horrible news for me. I love MGY and all her co-stars but Taec? I'm his Anti! and I never expected HIM out of all the people in the world to act alongside MGY whose dramas I LOVE.

*cries*

Is there a vague possibility that they'll change him? At all? Please?

This also means that we'll have screaming fangirls going *taec is soo hot* even when he can't act and is ruining a scene (just like aaallll other idol-dramas)

What have they done!

@5 DUMBO
Yeah. I'm still kinda traumatize right after seeing Hyun Jung SS501 as Jihoo in BOF. And now Ok Taecyeon? I dunno. I share the same feeling as JB honestly, I'm a bit wary right now. Augh... >,<

I think the team production of this drama have their own reason to pick one of the most popular group member as one of the main cast (seeing that he's not have acting experience). It's for the sake of rating gain IMO. Just think about it, MGY, CJM & SW might be seasoned actors but they're not so popular. MGW won Daesang for Painter of the Wind but that drama sinked in rating department. So did Seo Wo's Tamra Island. And as for CJM, most of drama viewer almost forget who he was (after finished his military duty) except some drama addicts like you JB (no offense to you). Thank God Taec casted as second leading man (it's minimize the risk), so he can learn from his senior. So I'd say, don't judge a book by the cover. Don't judge someone by his/her looks or acting experience. Who's know he might be surprise us. I just hope this drama doesn't end up like "Cinderella Man". Have Casted popular idol (Yoona) but can helped the rating.

As someone completely uninterested in 2PM and rather sick of most of these (pretty awful) idols-turned-actors, I cannot conjure up a single ounce of enthusiasm at this news. In fact, compared to the excitement when I heard Moon Geun Young, Seo Woo *and* Chun Jung Myung were going to be in the same drama, this is a bit of a WTF. I'm rather dreading the explosion of fangirling/spamming of the Soompi drama thread with "TAEC IS SO HOT HE SHOULD GET THE GIRL" comments when the news spreads, too. Ugh.

Oh well, at least he's eyecandy, right? It'll help block out the pain if his acting turns out to be subpar. :P *shallow*

Awww...I thought people would be MORE interested when Teac was confirmed?

Hmmm... I guess I am the only one who's interested in seeing how far he can go as an actor. Since he's never acted before, I believe it would be best to judge him until he actually brings something to his plate...

As long as he doesn't pull off something like TOP in IRIS (which I thought was utterly horrible, even worst than Hyun Joong in BOF), I'm all good. =)

They may be idols, they may not be experienced, and they may not be actors... but look at Min Hyo Rin in Triple, did she not surprise us with her believable spunky acting? UEE and Lee Hong Ki in YAB? I thought they were believable. I think we should just give em idols a chance... ^^

I like him as taecyeon in 2pm but as this role i'm not so sure.
He's not pretty face or handsome man. If you really looked at him, he's quite an ordinary look man with an attractive body. The quality that brought him to be eye-candy is his tough manly appearance and stage-performance.
This role is a nice, kind-hearted and funny guy, right?????
It seems like this role doesn't match his strength, hmmm(?)
I like to see him in a drama but I'm not so sure about this role will bring out the best of him.

guys he's not the main lead, it's not like yunho's drama heading to the ground, im a HUGE fan of dbsk but it was just aweful watching that drama, i think any idol-turned-actor should never take up a main lead role, take second lead and see how well he does, if he's good then production companies will come to him asking for him/her to be the mian lead. I just don't understand why everyone is saying that he'll fail just because he's an idol, give the guy a break, judge AFTER you've seen him act, and again, he's not the main lead, so whatever. Im not being biased cuz i love 2PM, it's if they wanna act they gotta start somewhere, as long as it's not heading a whole drama, im fine with second leads and extras, when they're confident enough and have recieved compliments for their acting then fine.

again, just give the guy a break, why is he different from any rookie actor? let's wait and see

i love Taec.. he's effen HOT and smex and all.. but the reason the "sitcom" Wild Bunnies didn't happen was because of 2PM's epic FAIL in acting.. so i'm leary.. but still excited.

I'll totally support Taec, cuz at least he's got more than one expression winkKhun (who is adorable, but he can't be anything BUT adorable).

i hope they have a lot of topless scenes for Taec... don't the main guy and the 2nd male lead get into a shirtless wrestling match over Cinderella? i thought that i read somewhere that was gonna be a scene. :D

@Lemoncat - I completely agree with you.

Uee and Hongki's acting look good ONLY because we were comparing them to Ji Hoo and u-know. You want to see real acting from young people? that would be MGY and Kim Soo Hyun. THAT'S real acting. Just because some of these idol-turned-actors didn't make us vomit in our seats does not mean they're cut out for acting. I'd love to give him a chance but it really peeves me that perfectly good ACTORS are hanging around jobless while overrated idols are stealing their jobs. You don't see actors barging into the music industry and abusing our ears with their half-vocals and auto-tune - oh wait! that's idol-stars jobs.

I'm so unhappy right now. The net has been flooded with 'will be watching this drama now that Taecyeon is in it'. Ugh. and excuse me - painter of the wind was successful and MGY is possibly the most famous young actress out there. The whole point of casting taec is to get crazy-fangirls who don't care about story-line to watch this drama. Which is just bad work ethic I tell ya.

i'm kidding. i think taec can act as the nice guy cause he's adorkable in real life anyway. but yeah, give him a chance. at least he's not playing the lead. now, that would be more 'uh...'.

what more, jyp train their kids in acting also, to a certain extend, he wouldn't fare too badly?? *crosses fingers.

@GaRa:

there's also exceptions to the rule. rain is one singer-turned-actor that is solid in his acting. lee soo young too (though she hasn't really acted per se).

and about actors going into singing. why is is that i hear kim myung min sing (i love that man, but he shouldn't sing)... i dont even agree that jang geun seok or lee min ho can sing well (and these are relatively good young actors).

coming from a diff perspective:

the thing bout idols is that they are not singers per se. they are entertainers. that's why u see ppl like jo kwon making divas out of themselves on variety shows (but he can sing.). so they have to know everything of the trade.

i pity taec that he can't focus on getting his singing right (LOL) or rapping or dancing or just be a lovable dork on variety shows and has to go into all this fuss of acting. acting is no easy job. juggling all at once is harder. we've seen hyun joong, we've seen uknow yunho and we know how hard life is for them.

they are overrated, yes, but they work hard for it, even if they can't act. if taec gets the chance but doesn't bother working hard, then only then u criticize him.

haha. i sound like a butthurt fan. LOL.

I don't understand this casting choice so im seriously disappointed. He's gonna be swallowed up by Moon Geun-young, Seo Woo, and overshadowed by Chun Jung-myung. I sincerely apologize to the 2PM fans but acting in a drama is not equivalent to variety shows. I like Taec and think he would be great on F.O. but drama is a stretch. He's an okay rapper (not really a singer) but i am not sure he's an actor. He should play to his strengths instead.

@amtsky,

I hope SHINee never aspires to be in a drama... LOL....

I love SHINee because they're an exceptional vocal and dance group.So same comment as with Taec - they should play according to their strengths. Variety shows and MC-ing would be okay bec they're such adorable dorks and their personalities shine. I feel they might just get ridiculed if they attempt to do drama.

Plus wouldn't it be great if SHINee can just focus for now on conquering Asia and maybe other places? Vocals like theirs, either live or recorded, should be heard in different languages... just like DBSK. They need to improve their Mandarin if they're to conquer China and learn Niponggo to really make it in Japan. There's still a lot of work for these young kids to do in the music industry.

@GaRa UEE might only perform decently in YAB (i think its bcos her role suits her thats why it was actually enjoyable) but Hongki, heck you cant say he was only good compared to KHJ,,,did u actually watch the bus scene when he cried on the phone...man, i bet not many REAL actors could pull it off like he did,,,so pls dont make generalisation like that!

I love 2PM but whew. at least Taec's just a side dish character.

i am also weary about singers-turned-actor.
i.e. heading to the ground by Yunho of DBSK really headed into the depths of the earth; took jung yonghwa quite some time into the drama before he escaped from the one-note facial expressions and etc. Well i guess it's not really the problem with singers-turned-actors, but that they're familiar figures in the entertainment industry, but really total rookies in the field of acting.

@Chajjye - I can understand your point but I'm really upset that a perfectly good drama will probably be ruined because of some idol star. I also know that idol-turned-actor is not a bad thing (I loved Eric Mun in Phoenix and I do think he is an excellent actor). But what I really don't like is:

1) If this drama gets good ratings; it's going to be pinned on Taec instead of MGY or SW or Mr Gong. Whereas MGY has never had a drama with bad ratings much like YEH - My Fair Lady sucked but the ratings were good because everybody loves YEH. If this becomes a trend then the standard of acting is going to drop - has dropped actually, since before when people were cast on how well they performed instead of their rating power. In this case it hurts more because this drama doesn't sound like it needs anymore rating power than it already has M!G!Y! I don't what the casters were thinking.

2) Sometimes working hard is not only not good enough - it's bad. Taec is going to have a lot of things to juggle and may just drop dead half way through - I personally don't see that as 'admirable' as much as 'biting off more than you can chew' and 'stupid.' Plus, some people just weren't cut out to act whether they work hard or not - why push it?

3) and this probably is kind of unrelated to acting and idols but didn't the members of 2pm make a promise NOT to do any 'entertaining' for awhile? Taec is totally disrespecting that - even considering that there is Chansung from 2pm who is an actual actor.

If you sound like a butthurt fan than I sound like a butthurt anti. lol. Peace :)

Oh, I hope no one took my comment too negatively. I'd admit that I generally really don't like the idea of idols crossing over into acting - it stinks of their companies pushing them into acting as another form of promotion, and sometimes it's clear the idols themselves don't take acting seriously enough (as a job) because of this. This annoys me, as does the legion of fangirls that tend to follow these big name idols, who cannot accept that their idol is anything less than the ~*~best actor evar~*~.

However, I'm always open to newbies who CAN pull it off! Some past singers have made the transition so successfully that it's hard to remember they were ever singers at all. I'd still prefer that singers stick to singing and actors stick to acting, but hey, if they can do it all, why not?

Re: Hongki, I don't think he's that bad. Obviously he also had a lesser part to play than Jang Geun Seok, Park Shin Hye or Jung Yong Hwa, and a comic role might have been easier to grasp than a more serious one. He certainly overacted quite a bit, but I thought on the whole he had charm, and that crying scene on the bus really tugged at the heartstrings. He started off as a child actor long before he became a singer, didn't he? I think with more practice, he might be quite decent.

As for Taecyeon, we'll have to wait and see. I certainly hope he'll prove me wrong and that I *should* have been more enthusiastic when he was casted :D

I don't know how's TaecYeon's acting abilities, but I think he got trainment as an actor in one reality show he was in before debuting. I don't think his acting will be as bad as Hyun Joong (I loooooooove Hyun Joong, but he ruined the 'Rui' character).
As for Yunho, one of the reasons (besides the terrible script) Yunho's drama failed was because he didn't had enough acting experience to be a lead actor of a drama and his co-star (the other lead actress) was as weak as him (Go Ara acting is flat and weak. Although she has more experience than Yunho, her acting is not better than his) so there was no balance. It was just weak acting all along the drama and because of that you couldn't feel chemistry, simpathy or passion for anything happening in that drama.
But that won't be TaecYeon's case because: he will not be main character of the drama (I think his character won't even be main male lead), his character seems much like himself and he's surrounded by great actors that can balance his acting.
What worries me about TaecYeon is that 2PM's album will be released around February and April, he's working as MC in a music show and he's also been casted on Family Outing and now he's been casted in a drama. It's to much things for him to handle and if this will be his acting debut he should quit variety shows (quit 'Family Outing'), quit CFs and quit his MCing stuffs to focus on acting in 2PM's musical activities only.
As much as I love 2PM and TaecYeon, I think it's unfair that he's recieving more opportunities than his other 2PM's members (TaecYeon is everywhere! 0_0).
I feel sad that Chansung (that has acting experience and was part of a popular daily drama before debuting) and Junho (that studied acting before becoming a trainee) aren't the ones getting the acting gigs instead of TaecYeon.

@bee: don't be mean... UEE is not like her real character and I think she's better actress than singer. And HongKi was a child actor before becoming a singer so it's not a surprise that he's done a good job acting in 'You're Beautiful'.

I mean TaecYeon should focus on acting AND in 2PM's musical activities if he's going to take the acting role. So he should quit variety shows, MCing and CFs to focus on these 2 things.

Anywayz, that was uncalled for. :P

It is sad but true that ratings are vital in the business. But that doesn't stop us drama fans from separating the jewel from the glass, eh? :)

On the other hand, you have actors (who are actors) but can't act for nuts. Those...I'd really pity the better ones. If you really want to compare, how bout those westerners who can't act western? i would totally rather have tablo or jung ryeo-won take their place (like what eugene did).

Just so you know, this drama is on my list because of MGY and SeoWoo. CJM...not my type. LOLs. Taec? Let's see what this beastly idol can do. I really don't hope there will be another overworked and fainting case.

He might just pull off this one. Maybe not the 2nd one though. I think Lee Ji-ah really needs to tone down her overreactions.

@38 (Snikki): Ditto. I dunno about these idol boys either, but they should be given one chance at least. Some turn out pretty decent like Uee, Lee HongKi and Jung Yong Hwa (he did get better!), while there are disasters like the guy who took on the Ji Hoo role in Boys Over Flowers and should stay away from acting altogether. And sometime we get a really good acting performance like that of Hero JaeJoong in Heaven's Postman, or at least that's how I found it.

I'm probably the only one who hasn't been thrilled about this drama since the cast was announced... then, again I might just eat up my words later on.

This is sure an interesting 1st pick, but I'm surprised to see so many people shocked by this..
I used to watch the show JYP's Superstar Survival 4 years ago WAYYY before 2PM debuted, and it seems TaecYeon had actually auditioned and got chosen for his ACTING (not singing or dancing).
I really hope he does not disappoint and proves everyone wrong. Plus, he gets a lot of crap for not being able to "sing" (even though he's a "rapper") so lets hope his acting skills will make up for everything! I mean, this IS why he got trained and picked my JYP.. right?

@maria
Yunho's drama failed for all reasons. His lack of acting experience is not the main reaosn for it. Rain's first drama went well eventhough it was his first lead role. He's one exception to this idol-turned-singer curse. Erik Mun was pretty decent, too. And Yoon Kye Sang. Common fact from these 3 though, they started as singers early 2000. No one from today's idols have been successful, so far. I think Lee Joon of MBLAQ had good emotions and facial expressions on Ninja Assassin, so he could be one of those who could successfully make it, given a good script and cast. but, I disgress.

As for Taec, he is not the main lead, so I think he will be okay. I don't think his role would require him to have the acting of a lead role. You know what I mean? sort of like a filler only. Or that's what I hope for, as much as I like him. I do have the same "fear" as the other people above. That if this became popular, it will all be about him and not the main cast or story. I love MGY and I hope she will be praised for the antagonist role.

Why did you bring YEH up in this discussion. I thought we're discussing about Taecyeon. You know what, I'm a silent reader of this site, and I know for some reason this site won't be posting whatever news about her after MFL. But please don't try to bash her in every turn by bringing her name up in disdain way. Just because she fail in one drama doesn't mean she will be fail forever (I hate it when someone been considered fail just because of one failure). And FYI, MGY is NOT a goddess so she can fail also. Just don't praise your idol by bashing the other. It's not fair.

As for Taecyeon, I just say give him a chance.
