Lee Young-ae signs on with new management

Lee Young-ae has signed with Song Seung-heon‘s independent management company, Storm S Company, which is the firm Song established after his contract with his former management ended last year. While I don’t normally pay attention to news about actors’ management shifts, there has been a lot of speculation over whether Lee Young-ae would retire following her marriage with a Korean-American in 2009. Now that she has taken on new management, she is effectively putting those rumors to rest and sending out the message that she is open to new work.

At the time of her marriage, she had said merely, “If a good project came along, I’d act in it,” but had focused on her studies (she’s working toward a doctorate degree at Hanyang University). On the 19th, Storm S Company confirmed the news and explained that now that they have two A-listers onboard, they will be expanding their roster to bring in new talent. Song Seung-heon is one of a wave of big-name actors going solo and/or establishing their own companies, such as Choi Ji-woo, Bae Yong-joon, So Ji-sub, and Kim Myung-min.

It's good the actors are starting their own companies because I am sure they will treat each other better and won't do scary stuff like tapping phones etc.

dear belleza,

regarding So Ji Sub nim joining Storm S was all rumours and denied by So Ji Sub nim himself last year on the 13th of August...

SJS "rumours about joining with SSH untrue"

So Ji Sub nim has his own independent management company, it is called
"51K" http://www.51k.co.kr/

SSH fans always wish him success and i'm sure resources will be shared between SSH and SJS, and their company as they are very good friends...

"Song Seung-heon is one of a wave of big-name actors going solo and/or establishing their own companies, such as Choi Ji-woo, Bae Yong-joon, So Ji-sub, and Kim Myung-min."

Maybe I am wrong here, but it seems like the actors who have gone on represent themselves, in a manner of speaking, have tended to kind of disappear. BYJ doesn't seem to have been around for a while -- and neither has CJW. Her "life-action" reality show with the other actresses seemed very limited in reach.

I wonder if entertainment industries make it harder for these "solo" artists to find mainstream work -- maybe even in passive-aggressive ways -- by not passing on worthy scripts.

Or maybe the K-entertainment industry is not as heavily "mafia-" or studio- controlled as industries in in other countries -- including in the America.

Regardless, I hope this does mean that Lee Young-ae is looking to act again.

Still skeptical about whether Lee Young Ae really wants to act again. She was already slowing down her career before Jewel in the Palace. She may do film, but I doubt we'll ever see her do TV again.

@Nom_Kitteh,

I think the main purpose for management is for the Hallyu actors to command huge salaries and extend their choices and promotional outside of Korea. There's significant risk, because it can create an antagonistic relationship between the celebrity and the production company, especially over creative control and salary take. A lot of people were taken aback by Lee Byung Heon's and Bae Yong Joon's salaries in their respective works.

But, as I've said in other places, power is an important qualification for the "Hallyu celebrity."

Kim Myung Min is kind of an exception to this. He kinda sat in the production chair in order to get White Tower made in Korea. In that regard, he's using the management to assure quality.

what i heard was, before LYA signed with Storm S... she was with her own company called "Doeo Entertainment" for approximately the past 10 years... reports were that, LYA's long time manager was first hired by Storm S (to be president/vice president?? for sure high a position within Storm S), maybe he has a friend in the company?? and in due time, he must have convinced LYA to signed a long term exclusive contract with Storm S... the details of the "exclusive contract" is not known... but all indications are... LYA will be with Storm S for a long time...

according to news articles... immediate plans for Storm S company is "to quickly progress to become a comprehensive large-scale arts performing company."

fans can't wait to see her comeback indeed...

to (post#7) Nom_Kitteh,

not necessarily true...

Bae Yong Joon reported after The Legend he was gonna do (and take his time on) his photobook essay promoting Korea and its rich location as part of "Asias Jewels"... reports coming now that he is currently selecting a project to do, CAN'T WAIT!!!!!

Song Seung Heon is now about to shoot his new movie
Lee Byung Heon has been busy for the past 3 years between Korea and US
Kim Myung Min is currently shooting his new movie
Jang Dong Gun just premiered a movie and about to embark on a new one
Kwon Sang Woo currently shooting his new movie
Won Bin soon to start shooting his new movie
So Ji Sub early production of Road No.1 drama
Jung Woo Sung busy with movies the past 5 years??

that's just a few examples of high profile actors and i haven't even touched the actresses

Lee Young Ae's last project??
"Sympathy For Lady Vengence" in 2005 (yes!! she's due for another one ^_^)

the general rule of concept is Actors/Actresses who are in management company not of their own, don't have a lot of financial freedom... they all need to pay a deposit to be in a certain company, if that company is a big one, the fee is high, but the plus side to that, they have a lot of resources to help you... and their so called salary will have a percentage that goes to the agency as a pool money for the agency to "profit", it's rare that they will force an actor or actresses to act in a drama or a movie... but i heard if certain quotas aren't met (ratio of earnings to "stay" in the company) they will get booted out... on that last line i'm only speculating of course..

@belleza and 2uss,
Thanks for the information. It's good to know that these actors are still working a lot (I am not familiar with their work because I don't watch as many K-movies, I guess) -- and that corporate management companies aren't blacklisting artists who are moving on to their own companies.
