The cast of Dong Yi gets into character

Here’s our first look at the cast of MBC’s historical series Dong Yi dressed in costume. The drama features Ji Jin-hee as King Suk-jong and Han Hyo-joo as the water maid Dong-yi who turns concubine, then mother to a future king. Lee So-yeon follows her vengeful Angel’s Temptation role as Lady Jang, a higher-ranking concubine that’s described as a villain role. Bae Soo-bin is Dong-yi’s caring protector (O, will he never get the girl?).

Han Hyo-joo shared her feelings on donning the clothes for the first time: “Wearing the costume makes it feel real, as though the outline has been revealed. Even when I’d seen the synopsis and script, I didn’t picture things clearly, but after seeing how it looks I can imagine it better.” Because she takes the title role, Han will be bearing much of the burden of the drama; she said, “The director told me that he’d watched all of my projects, and deliberated about what would suit me best, from head to toe. I think we’ll be fine if I can do a good job.”

She also called the drama a “sageuk CSI,” since there are scenes that involve Dong-yi investigating matters. (This is a description I haven’t heard before, and one I didn’t expect of this drama. I presume there are court mysteries at hand.)

Lee So-yeon said, “I’m playing another villain, but I’ll show a Lady Jang that’s different from previous portrayals, one with my own appeal.”

He won't get the girl. He'll be the Korean James Marsden where he'll do one random drama where he does get the girl.

(O, will he never get the girl?).

I know, right? I would love to especially watch the scenes between him and Han Hyo-joo. Would those be reminiscent of Shining Inhertiance? Loved them there too.

Personally, I am not interested in this drama, the storyline is interesting, but the cast puts me off. I like HHJ but still, and I also like JJH but I don't like them being paired together and there roles.

LSY is an extremely awesome actress, she did fantastic in ToA! I wish her character's life didn't end that way since I hope for her to have a happy ending. Her role here suits her, but now I only want to see her as a lead.

BSB ...poor guy....he never gets a lead role that has happy ending in terms of love.

@Carmie - Marsden actually ended up with "the" girl in at least one drama (for real)?!?LOL (it is very sad to see him never get the woman)...

But seriously Bae Soo Bin needs to get his woman!! Cannot look into his eyes (those eyes....)... aghh... is it possible for us (preferably myself) to reach into the screen and comfort him... hehehehe...

thanks for the post JB!! They look awesome in those outfits. I am truly intrigued by the whole "sageuk CSI" concept.

Hmmm...I love Han Hyo-Joo so I might check this out just cause of her...and I think it's kind of funny how Bae Soo Bin is playing the other guy that still won't be able to get her...

Sageuk CSI = Damo. This won't be another Damo.

They look like uncle and niece. He's old enough to be her father. Yeah, it's going to be impossible to pick up any kind of sexual chemistry between Ji Jin Hee and Han Hyo Joo. Very much like Park Shin Yang and Moon Geun Young in POTW.

"Sageuk CSI = Damo"

Oh no you don't, belleza! That's what they *told* me to lure me in. And about 40 minutes total was spent CSI-ing. Then Damo turned into a combo of AIMH, Ireland, and WHIB with some froofy-wuxia thrown in which wasn't all together absolutely dreadful, but was still lightyears away from Chinese choreography, but I'm getting sidetracked here (it's like I'm Kang-ha talking to Pal-gang), but was still a meaty package of all of the above. And I lurves it.

As for Dong-yi, nope, not for me, esp. when you go and waste BSB yet again! Might as well make him play that half man/half woman character he essayed in Jumong. Rather than unleash his manly manhood and then go all psych! on us.

I thought BSB got both sisters in Temptation of an Angel? At least both of them fell in love with him. The open ending suggested that there's a possibility he and the younger sister can reconcile as they still have feeling for each other.

Eventhough BSB sounds like a second male lead, but depends on his script and acting, audience might be in favor of him, like Brilliant Legacy.

hmm i just wish JJH grow a facial hair cuz he looked really HOT in "Jewel of the Palace"

awww BSB our poor guy who never gets the girl.

let's hope that HHJ will get much improved in acting in this drama.. cuz in SI the second lead girl did a better job than her.. and in Soul drama she overreacted.. but nether-lees i like her.. she has what i call the "comfy beauty"..

and am sure LSY won't disappoint :) although i wished to see her as a good girl role

I also like Ji Jin-hee very much in He Who Can't Marry. I like Han Hyo-joo in Iljimea, that where she caught my attention, and of course, love her role in Brilliant Legacy. Poor Lee So-yeon, why does she have to end up with an evil role back to back?

Han Hyo Joo seems sweet but she doesn't seem comfortable with the men she's paired up with in the dramas I've seen. It's like a Gu Hye Sun type of acting with the men -They keep them at an arm's distance away.
Anyhow, I may check out the 1st episode at least and see how it goes.

Wow, pretty! :D

More brighter than Yi San, and more "cheerful" (?) looking than the sordid Jang Hui-bin...

Awww...and I was expecting hey'd wear the wigs... :C

“sageuk CSI”...another Yi San /slash/ Ballad of Hanseong (Hanseong Byeolgok)??? And since when had Dong-yi been given such powers, when the Queen had more of them?

About LSY...I'll await her Jang Hui-bin...(she's the 8th one now, after Kim Hye-su, whose Jang Hui-bin was nice)
@19...no, I don't think she'll go a Mishil...but remember that Jang Hui-bin was the Joseon version (at least; she was part of a trio known as Scary (includes Jang Nok-su and Jeong Nan-jeong) of a dangerous femme fatale (Silla: Mishil), and even the Annals note of her beauty...and her wickedness... X3

BSB's blue costume looks good. I like Lee So Yeon, I think her performance in Angel's Temptation was great, if she can achieve "Mishil"'s standard, then it will be a breakthru in her career!

first case of sageuk error...
The female royals should still be wearing wigs, since it was still later when both Jeongjo and Yeongjo (Dong-yi's son, who historically was ashamed of his mother and avoided any mention of her) advocated the banning of the wigs (hence, the cheopji at the head...I must say, Dong-yi's is so much prettier than Inhyeon's...)

@16
second case of sageuk error (at the pics)...
By this time JJH should have facial hair...Jeon Gwang-ryeol (who did Sukjong at Jang Hui-bin 2003) had his when he married Inhyeon (Park *somethingsorryforgothername*), Jang Hui-bin, & Choi Sook-bin...

Even though it's more accurate and whatnot, I agree that Han Hyo Joo shouldn't have been paired up with such an old guy because they'll probably be lacking chemistry.
I'm not so sure about this show... I'll probably just hire someone to compile all of Bae Soo Bin's scenes for me. That's all I really need. ; )

Did you know that Ji jin Lee and Lee So Yeon are married to each other. Can't forgive JJL for being so mean to Jo Hyu Jae in Love Letter and LSY character in Spring Waltz was also mean to Han Hyo Joo. Don't know if I can take both of them in the same drama, but I do respect their acting, Just love HHJ in Brilliant Legacy and Spring Waltz.

i love Han from iljimae and Brilliant legacy but still felt uncomfortable with this pair in Dong-Yi. Han looks so young in every matters but i can't think of her as QUEEN. Anyway, i'm happy she can join such a big project and can have major role in this drama. Her acting quite lacking in some scenes in iljimae bcoz it's saguek and she can't speak naturally. I hope she can improve her acting skill here. ^ ^

@32 Jo - "Did you know that Ji Jin Hee and Lee So Yeon are married to each other?"

They are married in real life? Wow, what a strange twist of fate then because Lee So Yeon was rumored to have been Jo Hyun Jae's gf during their "Untold Scandal" and "Joy of Love/Pleasure of Love" days. And of course, Ji Jin Hee made Jo Hyun Jae's life so miserable in Love Letter. Can't forgive Ji Jin Hee either for making my Prince Charming Jo Hyun Jae miserable in Love Letter, kkkk.

Anyway, for LSY fans who haven't seen her in the gem of a short internet film "Joy of Love/Pleasure of Love" here's a link where you can watch it. It is really a joy to watch.

I enjoyed Han Hyo Joo's performance in Shining Inheritance but looking at these pictures reminds me of Spring Waltz in that she seems too young for this more mature role... but I suppose I should wait for the drama to see if she can change my mind about it.

@ 32, 38 - No.. JJH and LSY aren't married in real life, in fact LSY isn't even married at all! (It's true that the name of JJH's wife (who is not an actress) is quite similar to LSY though lol)

I'm really looking forward to Dong Yi, and I'm not that worried about the chemistry between the two leads.. I think they look better than I first thought, and I think JJH will support her well.

I doubt I'll be watching Dong Yi.

The premise and characters are seemingly identical to Yi San, and the writer and director are the same as well. I liked Yi San enough to watch it all the way to the end (even though it started to seriously run out of steam after 50 episodes or so), but I don't want to see a remake. First of all, I found the political maneuvering in Yi San to be frequently boring, and I expect there to be more of the same in Dong Yi since it concerns the life of a king. Watching people scheme and plot in identical rooms for 77 episodes gets a little old. Second, the love story was very lackluster because of the amount of formality between the main characters, and it wasn't very compelling in general. I expect this to be an issue in Dong Yi as well. Third, I doubt Dong Yi will do anything new in terms of cinematography and overall style, so if you disregard the plot and characters you won't be able to tell it apart from Dae Jang Geum and Yi San. Some features really need to go, like improbably well-lit indoor scenes, repetitive camera angles and constant flashbacks to conversations that occured seconds earlier.

But what will ultimately determine whether I'll watch this is Lee Ip-sae, who played Young-roh in DJG and Cho-bi in Yi San (also appeared in Byung-hoon's 1999 drama Huh Joon, which I have not seen). I only started watching Yi San because I liked her so much in DJG. But will she be in Dong Yi? She has worked with Byung-hoon three times before, so it's possible. Man, if she's in the cast I'll watch it even if it's otherwise completely boring.
