Moon Geun-young’s bad-girl transformation

Ooh, finally we get a look at Moon Geun-young‘s transformation as the stepsister in Cinderella’s Sister! When the role was first announced, it was announced as a villainous turn; it was then amended to say that she would be more of a misguided heroine. In any case, the role promised a departure from Moon’s angelic image (she’s known as a “donation angel” and is beloved for her wholesome charm). But until now, we haven’t seen much indication of her character Eun-jo’s darker side.

Moon’s usual image is more like the character in the first two stills below, which show her with co-star Chun Jung-myung when their characters are younger. However, Eun-jo grows up feeling a lack of love and therefore becomes a young woman who rejects love from others. She acts like she’s indifferent to the world and is characterized by harsh language and a cynical smile, which she uses as a defense mechanism. A producer explained that the character will continue to undergo changes as the drama progresses.

Cinderella’s Sister premieres March 31.

I’ve always thought Moon was cute and sweet, but with this new look, she’s quite stunning. I remember that a few years ago when Moon was in her late teens, she had attempted to shed her good-girl image with “sexy” CFs (dark makeup, clingy clothing), but that didn’t really work and people continued to associate her as the nice girl. With some added maturity, though, maybe now the transformation will be credible.

  1. For some reason, these stills are so much more appealing to me than the previous ones…maybe because they’re a little different from what I’d been expecting? Anyway, I’m looking forward to Cinderella’s Sister even more now!

Thanks so much for sharing!!! =]

  2. wow. can’t wait. (:

  3. whoa. she looks incredibly different — i mean not omfg surgery different~ but she doesn’t have that sweet nice image that i always see of her. haaa i have no idea what i’m saying. can’t wait for it.

  4. I think it’s that haunting look in her eyes…..I think we’re naturally more drawn to mysterious torn characters. either way…these new pics are definitely making me more excited for this series! I just hope it doesn’t turn out to be a long-drawn melo-drama WISTC….I don’t think i can handle that much heartache again.

  5. i’m sooooo anticipating this drama. i love emo, dark girls in drama cuz they remind me of me lol. in one or two of the stills, moon geun young looks like singer go younha lol.

  6. She looks like Uhm Jung Hwa in her bad-girl photos.

I’m still hoping this drama isn’t too melodramatic.

  7. Does anyone think that she’s channeling Go Hyun-jung vibes in the bad girl pics?
Something about the intense and yet vulnerable look in her eyes …

  8. Omona… this looks like its going to be interesting! Now that these transformation pictures are out, I think I might actually give this show a try!

  9. love the bad girl transformation photos! much more interesting than all the previous stills. now i’m curious abt hte drama!

  10. I LOVE Moon Geun Young. :) I cannot wait for this drama to premiere. And like javabeans mentioned, I remember that- it was her song &design too or something like that and she tried to shed her nice image.. but it really didnt work. x]

    She’s so pretty:D

  11. She looks hot..

  12. Oh my gosh. I am captured by her transformations! She looks absolutely amazing AND she has beautifully haunting and vulnerable eyes. It’s amazing. Her eyes stole my attention immediately when i was looking at the picture. That is presence! No doubt she was radiate in this role!

  13. she look like of inoue mao on the last photo, very pretty.can’t wait to
watch this drama because of chun jung myung :D

  14. She looks awesome ~~ is she the main character of the series? I’m hoping that she’ll end up with Chun Jung Myung haha

  15. OMG those last pictures…. She reminds me of how my friends from high school look now. Like blending the style they had from high school (which was like grunge style meets raver) and applying their style in a more grown up mannor without losing that sense. (less to no raver, more maturity, little grunge.)

  16. The stills are so good. MGYs eyes speak volume. I love it.

  17. she still doesnt look scary or bad
if i saw her like that, i’d just think she’s confused and needs to go home

  18. OMG! I absolutely love the darker version of Moon Geun Young. She was so impressive in Painter of the Wind and her chemistry with Moon Chae Won was electrifying, too. I’m really excited to see this Kdrama…

Korea’s youngest sister has finally grown up and she’s not slowing down either. Moon Geun Young, fighting! :D

  19. @13 rei, o my god i was just about to say that too! she really does look like inoue mao in the last picture!!

  20. Isn’t this a lot like Chae Rim and Kim So Yeon’s All About Eve? I just keep seeing Kim So Yeon, especially in that shot covering her face. And the plotline….

  21. Hmmm…. I thoght she looked older in the very very first picture. BUt in the school uniform she still looks like she’s 12. I’m curious to see her acting as the mean girl though. SHould be interesting!

  22. For some odd reason I always found her head weirdly big.

  23. she looks so dark
    :anticipating!!

  24. can’t wait….bring it on….

  25. Her wig or hair extension sort of gets in the way.. hopefully I’ll only see that for a short period. I wonder why they’re not releasing Seo Woo’s pictures though.. and in some of the drama related clips they were showing all three actors interviews except Seo Woo’s.. kinda weird..

Teaser trailer’s out for Personal Taste and I want to see one for Cinderella Unni too.

  26. These stills make me wanna see it. nao. So pretty.

  27. i am so excited for this drama and moon geun young looks absolutely amazing :]

why can’t march 31 come faster?!

  28. i actually much much prefer her looking like this – though really, how is this ‘bad-girl’ transformation?

the change is subtle and really enhances her looks. but bec her previous image was so ‘little innocent girl’ – this good change (in my books) comes across as ‘bad-girl’.

change is good – it’s totally in keeping with her age. and those highlights do a lot to make her hair more interesting.

  29. *GASP* she looks absolutely stunning!!

  30. @28,
I’d say the “bad-girl” descriptor is apt given her character’s personality, not just because she’s wearing darker makeup and looking grunge-chic in these photos. She’s supposed to swear and use harsh language and presumably has a bit of a wild streak. Plus, she’s brandishing a beer (?) bottle like a weapon.

  31. I love the pictures~

I like how they don’t try to make her look really “evil”; but there’s something about her eyes and expression that makes me truly believe that she IS one of those characters who do have a good heart beneath and is going through pain.

There are so many “so-and-so is mean and cruel because of his/her hard past, etc etc”… And yet even though you’re “suppose” to feel sorry for them, many times you can’t always connect emotionally, and than you just wait as you know the next lead will “change” him/her and everything will be all happily ever after in the end.

However with these stills, you can really feel the pain in her that really lures you in.

I think this just raised my anticipation really, really high.

  32. I can’t wait for this! So many good dramas in March and this is definitely one of my top favorites! Loving every character so far.

  33. At first I thought bad-girl should be in quotations because no way does she even look like one.. but those last few pictures might prove otherwise. She definitely have grown into a more mature, beautiful woman.

Oh, and makeup sure does wonder.

  34. I maybe shipping wayyy too early, but MGY and CJM have ridiculous facial resemblance to me… very couplish!

    cant wait!

  35. wow. she looks so much better with long hair!!

  36. i see no couple chemistry between Moon and Chun…

  37. I’m so looking forward to this series. I hope the director does a good job of managing the tones of the drama. Base on Moon’s character description, it can get pretty angst and dark.

  38. @36 moonriver.

Me too. They’re totally giving a brother/sister vibe.

  39. She will do great, I assure you guys. She has already channeled a darker/complex character in Painter of the Wind successfully. It won’t be a problem for her.

But guys, if you want to see her in action, check out this BTS clip
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTf8kpxz3lA

Off the camera, she’s sweet and nice. But the minute the camera rolls, she shows her true colors!

And Seo Woo’s in there too. Wouldn’t call her the typical nice and innocent Cinderella in here.. maybe she’s deceiving everyone too.. take note of her scene with MGY! That’s COOL!

  40. And oh, about her chemistry with Chun. I’m loving it so far.
It shows better when you see them acting the scenes out. ^^
Check out the BTS clip. It’s a must see.

  41. @chace,

“Does anyone think that she’s channeling Go Hyun-jung vibes in the bad girl pics?”

Indeed. Go Hyun Jung jokes that she’s the middle aged Moon Geun Young. ;)

MGY still wears the Noona’s Little Sister label, but she’s also regarded as the most gifted actor/actress of her generation. Her acting has to live up to the expectations of great acting.

  42. as long as it’s not too weepy, you can count me in!

  43. The previously released stills never did anything for me, but I really like this set. The last still is particularly grabbing.. I’m actually really intrigued by this show now! The tone looks like it might be pretty dark, which is always interesting.

  44. I also see MGY in GHJ. Whenever i see GHJ in still caps, i wonder if MGY grows older, she would exactly look like her. ^^

Re: MGY and Chun – was he the one partnered with GHJ in this “fox” series? He’s also linked with her right? ;) I also think they resemble in some angles

  45. She looks like a drug addict there. I miss her when she was wee small in My Little Bride… those were the days! *sighs*

  46. So looking forward to this. Just 3 weeks to go.

  47. Wow she looks amazing! Almost unrecognizable. I had no idea MGY could look like this. What a far cry from the “little song hye kyo” autumn tale days…

  48. bring it on! bring it on!

MGY looks absolutely misguided here. (LOL!)

i’m excited. 3 interesting dramas up! i’m pushing the rest of my watch list down. lol.

    sorry pasta. XD

  49. @ #41 belleza and #44 i_love_blue

“Go Hyun Jung jokes that she’s the middle aged Moon Geun Young.”

Oh wow, I didn’t know that. So sentiments about the two of them bearing some
    uncanny resemblences are aplenty?

These bad girl pics immediately struck a chord in me upon initial viewing.

MGY’s disheveled hair and wounded “I bear deep scars” eyes and expression
really remind me of GHJ’s Cha Soo-kyung character in the drama H.I.T..

  50. Geun young unnie so cute! Saranghaeyo unnie!^^

  51. She’s really stunning here. I’ll expecting so much more from the show.

  52. “Oh wow, I didn’t know that. So sentiments about the two of them bearing some
    uncanny resemblences are aplenty?”

Yeah, GHJ joked about it on Golden Fishery in 2008. Their face shape is very different (MGY = heart shaped face, GHJ=pear-ish face), but both have large, button eyes (though MGY’s eyes are a little closer together), thick, straight brows, and high cheekbone structure. Both actresses know how to deliver a regal smile when needed. Both were role model types and well regarded for their acting talent in their early careers as well.

The darker eye makeup (relatively speaking — Korean makeup really loves peach eyeshadow) really suits her look, and it helps to widen her eyes. But a complex, layered fringe coupled with long hair is what transforms her look; it gives her face very strong oval shape, which with the depth of her eyes completes an awesome effect.

(Also ironic that Chun Jung-myung has been in dramas with both. :D GHJ was a supportive older sister to CHJ when he was in the military.)

  53. Can’t not wait to see her transformation.

  54. She looks stunning in those photos with her hair all over her face and heavy eyeliner! Someone commented above that she looks like Uhm Jung Hwa, but personally the minute I looked at her, it reminded me of Chae Jung An. Very pretty, though!

  55. Oooo, I love the first and fourth images. Nice! She should keep the long hair.

  56. @8 (Icarusfalls): I totally agree! Was of the same mindset as you before those stills got released~

btw, dark Moon Geun-young kinda reminds me of the girl in Nobuta wo Produce. Not character-wise but the appearance somehow.

  57. @vis: yup she does look like Nobuta from NwP in those photos.

Really cool badgirl makeover. I’m sure she can play this role well especially since she’s already played all types of characters before. She’s one of my favorite Korean actresses and always cannot wait for her new roles to release. BTW is that her real hair or extensions?

  58. yes! the fleshy sensuality (a surprise, certainly!) is a lot like a “kid” version of uhm jung hwa in slasher-horror. intrigued…

  59. LOVE IT! stunning is the perfect word. looking forward to it.

seowoo is the other girl right? yet to have stills from her?

  60. she has a gorgeous face… i think the “bad girl” look suits her… ;)

  61. Finally get a sense of what this story is about, and it is a good twist from the all-nice-and-sweet heorine in almost every drama!

  62. she doesn’t look really bad at all..

    ..cute. >_<

  63. If I hadn’t known about them before and saw them on the street, I would go as far as saying MGY and GHY were younger/elder sister or daughter/mother :D

  64. @6 : yeah, she looks like UJH in the 4th pic.

  65. Oooh.. the excitement!! :D

  66. she looks great in the “darker side”. still no Seo Woo pics ^ ^

  67. I LOOOOVVVVVEEE MONN GEUN-YOUNG! She’s such a “natural” actress. Whenever she acts, it seems like she’s not acting at all. The tears, the smile look so genuine.

I’m going to watch this, for sure! MOON GEUN-YOUNG FTW!!!

    : )

  68. i like this image.. she’s quite beautiful in the “bad girl” persona. not that she was bad looking to begin with, but she was more cute than beautiful. now she’s beautiful. i like it!!!

i can’t wait to watch this!!

  69. Aw.. this looks like it’s probably going to be a melodrama, huh? I doubt I’ll be watching, in that case.

  70. WOW! You were right javabeans to say Ms Moon was stunning (or at least the new stills of her character’s change are) because quite frankly, when I saw the first image I had to catch my breath. I am female, and for me to say someone is a beaut (yes, I actually meant beaut, but you can also say beauty if you want to) is quite a statement right? Anyways, I am not really interested in this particular drama since I try to turn to my dramas for a few good laughs, but I might just check up on this one to see how they tell the story (or should I say retell since I have seen a lot of Cinderella’s Sister type shows/movies to not really be interested).

  71. I wonder how old she’s supposed to be in the drama. ‘Cause her style here looks very “high school emo kid”. I was expecting something more mature.

For some reason I’m suddenly worried about the direction this is going in! I love all the actors though, so it can’t possibly be a disappointment.

  72. MGY still looks too thin. She needs that extra protein to boost her immune system. Maybe extra slices of pizza from the pizza factory would help.

  73. i really kind of don’t understand the drama..
so essentially the step sister is good? which makes cinderella bad?
    or what..

  74. Wow, this transformation works so well for her! it’s so different seeing her with more eye make-up!

  75. I love this image so much i think she looks wayyy hotter and a whole lot more interesting !

  76. Her transformation looks awesome…gosh, “Oh, My Lady” and then “Personal Taste” and now “Cinderella’s Sister”…what am I going to watch first???

  77. @ #52 belleza

Thanks for the informational insight! ^^

  78. WOW she looks amazing :”)

  79. Wow. I’m so used to seeing MGY as the sweet adorable heroine. But this looks so different. As my friends and I used to say “She look thug”. I absolutely cannot wait for this drama to air.

  80. I really like her new look too except…*sighs* I know I keep on saying this regardless of the actors and actresses but she really REALLY does need to eat more. She used to look so healthy and despite already being skinny in her healthy state, I wonder who thought to tell her to lose more weight? She looks a bit emaciated in recent pictures of her at various awards ceremonies.

  81. OH………MY………GOSH!!!!

I CAN’T HELP WITH MY EMOTIONAL — cuz’ I am reallllyy excited to see this new drama “Cinderella’s Sister” on March 31 — oh gosh, Hurry up TILL on March 31!!!

Oh I really LOVE this pics of Moon Geun-Young when she have a beautiful hair down and seem so “dark” side — very EVIL look like that way! Oh BRAVO – BRAVO!

  82. The stills are beautiful! For some reason, I thought she looked very similar to Inoue Mao in the last few pictures.

  83. Ah! I cannot wait!
She looks really different but in a good way.
What a breathtaking presence she has in the photos though!

  84. is the leading male character, chun jun myung, rich or poor in this drama? what do u all think?? i like a cinderella story, like a poor girl meets a rich guy.. hehe..

  85. MGY is always so pretty and she radiates this certain glow and charm. More astounding even is how great she is as an actress, she is so talented, she really gives her all. But I just hope that she takes care of her health more too. She had been sick recently and that is so sad. With good health she will have a better glow and more resistance to sickness.
