Goong, Iljimae director takes on Playful Kiss adaptation

Okay, now THIS I could really get behind!

When I first heard about the adaptation of Itazura na Kiss for Korean television, I was not impressed — I’m tired of the constant Japanese-manga-to-kdrama efforts, and I was skeptical about Group Eight’s ability to handle it well. The production house’s biggest success to date has been Boys Before Flowers, and they seem to have a particular eye for translating trendy manhwas to television, but for every decent show (Tamra the Island) they’ve had a bomb (Goong S). And we all know that Boys Before Flowers was a success despite numerous flaws.

However! Now director Hwang In-roi has signed on, and that makes me very, VERY excited. Hwang In-roi did Goong and Return of Iljimae, and turned those two projects into sumptuous feasts for the eyes. I didn’t love Goong‘s pacing, but as a work of directing it’s a gorgeous feat, and Return of Iljimae, I’m sure you all know, is one of my favorite dramas ever. Those two dramas, which were both based on manhwas, have breathtaking cinematography and two of the best soundtracks and scores of any kdramas I’ve ever seen. Hwang has a sharp eye and brings out the best in his actors, including a few who were not known for their acting before working with him (Yoon Eun-hye, Joo Ji-hoon, Jung Il-woo), and has a wonderful, delicate touch with emotional beats.

Writing is Go Eun-nim of Bungee Jumping of Our Own, the 2001 film starring Lee Byung-heon and the late Lee Eun-ju.

Playful Kiss (aka Mischievous Kiss) was adapted into a hit Taiwanese drama in 2005, It Started With a Kiss, and was so popular that it produced a sequel series.

The Korean drama version will soon finish casting and begin filming in July, and is aiming for a Fall 2010 broadcast.

@ 27 Viola. YES! i completely agree with you! the female lead and the guy's mother was annoying beyond belief, i couldn't understand how the guy managed to stay sane living together with them. the only thing that kept me watching was really the chemistry btw ariel lin and joe chenng.

i will be tuning in anyway, i am sucker for these kinda romedy dramas, lets hope it won't fail like BOF

After hearing all the comments from everyone , I narrowed down my very long previous choices which I posted above ^^
As the manga ,the main guy must be tall , look cold outside but cute and warm inside while the main girl is small, short and cute.

Actors : Lee Cheon Hee . Im Joo Hwan , Jung Il Woo, Kang Dong Won

Actresses : Park Bo Young, Kim So Eun , Sandara Park , Park Ji Yeon

I'm so excited to hear the new about the casting of this drama. Really cant wait!!! I hope the soundtrack will be amazing.

sure why not Ariel Lin speaks Korean bring her over and she can redo her role. But only after she done her role in the TW remake of Coffee prince. I saw the Japanese live version of this, that lead girl ears, I sure they fixed them with make-up to stick out like that. For those that saw Started with a Kiss, first off the japanese one is way older and it was very fast only 10 episodes long, so imagine Started with a Kiss a speed and you about have it. I still have say I liked both versions myself.

someone mentioned Baek Sung Hyun & Park Shin Hye and it got me thinking about how much i wanted to see them act together again. i really liked ISWAK even tho i did cringe at Ariel's character sometimes (still love her). maybe its just me but i really hope they choose ppl who are suitable for the roles. not to mention im biased about Shin Hye <3

I want that guy from Will It Snow For Christmast & currently GIANT. He could play the cold hero perfectly. And Park Bo Young would be so cute for the girl.

How about Jiro's character? someone who can act crazy but still look handsome.

Go Ah Sung is Kil Pulip in Master Of Study rite? yeah she can pull it off. Kotoko has average face appearance not so pretty but still cute & kind of petite. And yes that guy from Will it Snow for Christmass :) For Jiro I imagine Song Jong Ki.

I'm pretty skeptical. The cinematography was pretty in Goong, but nothing else was that great to me (although I admit I was sucked into the fandom in its heyday). I will just hope and pray the writer is actually GOOD and not as horribly crappy as the one for Goong and then I will become more optimistic. Only judging based off of that since I never watched Return of Iljimae.

I hope that they will cast decent actors for the roles and not like in boys over flowers, yes that means you Kim Hyun Joong!
I wonder will they work with the mangakas husband like the TW version did because Kaoru Tada passed away before she had managed to write a ending to the story.

Hm, I think I'll be wary of this one for many factors. Group 8 doing this, but I do have hope with the PD. Mainly though the storyline. When is there going to be a saavy lady and an utterly dense guy lead?? Hopefully she just won't be a complete irritatin numbskull if the right actress is picked. This was my first drama to barely last an ep and swore me off Tdramas - after I had forced myself through Pasta Smile no less. I keep thinking of the female lead from Hon for this for some reason. No clue on lead male, but someone fresh would be nice. Comes in with less expectations of what he'd do before bein out the door. Here's hoping this will be a great surprise.

Hah. Never thought there are people who share my thoughts on ISWAK - namely draggy, repetitive and too silly to engage my full attention.

In the name of Tamra the Island, I will give the Group Eight the benefit of a doubt.

Interesting to read that ISWAK was one of the first Asian dramas to many. Well, it was my first and I loved it. I will probablyl never watch it again (and never like it quite as much) but at that time it was perfect. I also watched the Japanese version, it was quick and fun, except the annoying lead girl...

As for the Korean leads... I'd like to see actors that we haven't seen that often yet! So no Kang Dong Won, Yoon Eun Hye, Song Hye Gyo, Jang Geun Suk, Lee Min Ho, Kim Bum etc. Haha, although I do love them all...

GO AH SUNG is lovely, but I can't imagine her as a 'stupid' mindless girl, just can't after God of Study ;)

I could see SANDARA PARK in this role (even though she's 26) because of her bubbly and young personality. But I'm not sure about her acting?

IM JOO HWAN. Oh yes. But he's probably busy with What's Up? filming...

How about JUNG UI CHUL? YONG HWA would pull it off too.

This Korean version better be better than the taiwanese one as I never finished that. I wanted to vomit in disgust in every episode. The girl was such a doormat, such a pushover whose life - her very existence revolved around the guy. I couldn't stand it. Such a personality trait is usually handled with much more tact in Korean dramas as I find Chinese and Japanese dramas still hold traditional feminine virtues of being cute, docile and stupid as paramount.

Well Kotoko was like that, she was described as average looking, not that good in sports or school but loved Irie since she saw him the first time.
Irie again was everything she wasn't, good looking, good in school and a great athlete.

Just a question; Javabeans do you have a dream cast for the parts ?

@ 15: Yeah Go Ah Sung is Pool Ip in God of Study.

@ 24: Yeah I know what you mean :) Kotoko is so different from Pool Ip, must be hard to imagine it. I pop her name cos she one of rare actress that although not pretty, she still adorable & cute as @15 say. Also yeah she looks not so tall.

@21: Im Joo Eun you mean? yeah I agree she also not too pretty but adorable. But she busy with What's Up with Im Ju Hwan. And I think the one play Kotoko can't be more than 162-163 cm height.

ISWAK is my number one TW drama. The Arjoe chemistry, plus the heartwarming support characters and cast (oh Jiro!), are the drawcard. If the lead couple doesn't work, the whole drama will collapse because it is a 'hard-to-believe' story. A dump girl gets the genius hot guy - even Cinderella sounds more probable :)

My dream Korean Zhi Shu has long been Im Joo-hwan. I always think he and Joe Cheng must have been twins in a former life or something. Otherwise, Jung Il-woo or Jang Geun-suk can pull it off well. I'll go for Park Bo-young for the female lead.

Having said these, I would trust the Director to find a new pairing especially when this story starts from junior high school. Fresh faces would be most welcoming - remember the delight in discovering Lee Min-ho from BoF?!

i really hope that whoever they cast the main male lead is, he must be really good looking plus charismatic and have the characteristics that ladies will drool for!!! that's what naoki is... (if they cast someone as goodlooking as the anime version that would be purrfeectt...though that would be asking too much hehe)

i don't really care much who they cast as female main lead, i just hope she won't annoy me much that would be sufficient enough

please, don't disappoint me as BOF did... this is one of my faves storyline that things shouldn't go wrong with...

Hmm, how about Yoo Seung Ho? He's too young?

I like Im Soo Hwan in Tamra, and yes he fits physically as the lead character.
As for the actress... I would like to see Park Bo Young in drama again..

Even though I love Kim Bum, he's too sweet for this role.

wow i watched the taiwanese version only last week
and enjoyed it pretty much though didn't like the female lead (stupid and annoying beyond imagination) maybe it's supposed to be like that(didn't read the manhwa)
but the actress's smile is very cute and the guy is hot

the old japanese version - i couldn't bring myself to watch more than one episode
the guy was ok but the girl didn't suit him at all

i'm looking forward to see the k-adaption
and would like to see park shinye as the main lead
for the guy i really don't know

You know who I really want casted as Kotoko?

Kim So Eun. But it's basically impossible to cast her because she's still tied up with 'A Good Day for the Wind to Blow'. I just think she's such a budding young talent and would really do a good job in a portrayal of a bumbling Kotoko.

But she won't get casted. I refuse to get my hopes up just to get them crushed.

I'm not sure who should be the cold-blooded Naoki. Hmm... I do know it's got to be someone tall, though. I dunno, that's just always been the criteria for me.

I mean, from the manga to the anime the the Taiwanese TV adaption (which I love, by the way) Naoki has always been tall. And that way, we'll get t see another major difference between the two characters (Kotoko is pretty short). And I am not someone who worships BBF, but I really kinda thought Lee Min Ho would be good for the role.

I'm not saying this because I want a BBF reunion. I honestly believe these two actors have true talent and could fit well into these roles. After seeing Lee Min Ho's performance in Personal Taste, I am quite convinced he would make a great Naoki (poker face, cold-blooded, stern, serious, cruel at times). These two have serious acting chops.

How can I not be excited? And MORE SO after the director has been revealed! I liked Goong a lot and loved Iljimae a lot, so this should be really reeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaally good.

And now my ranting has wound to a stop.

I can't wait to see the korean adaptation!!

I watched the Taiwanese drama and watched the anime albeit I find the story annoying, especially the lead female character. I don't even know why but I find the story addicting anyway.

I think Kim So Eun is too pretty. The female lead has to be not too pretty and can play a ditsy character that's not annoying. I would really like new actors play the leads because just like the other dramas from the production company (BOF) and the director, it'll just propel them to stardom. I'm just hoping for a great soundtrack.
