Shin Se-kyung is out and Shin Mina is in for the upcoming drama My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho. Phew, this drama has undergone a ridiculous amount of casting speculation, rumors, and changes, hasn’t it? Seriously, I’m almost tired about the news and it has barely even begun. (Shin Se-kyung had been reported with the most finality, but that was preceded by a lot of rumors about Sandara Park and Jeon Ji-hyun as well.)
In My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho, Shin Mina plays a gumiho who has been asleep for the past 500 years, who is released when a seal is broken, and a romance ensues with a human played by Lee Seung-ki. The drama may have some competition with Gumiho’s Revenge, which is another gumiho-centered show starring Han Eun-jung that is planning for a broadcast later this summer. However, as the always-hilarious Hong sisters writing pair are behind this drama, I’d expect this one to deliver lots more wacky hijinks (and pop-culture parodies and catchphrases, to boot).
This is Shin Mina’s first drama in three years, since 2007′s thriller series Devil with Uhm Tae-woong and Joo Ji-hoon. Prior to that, she starred with Rain in A Love To Kill in 2005. Although I was perfectly fine with Shin Se-kyung, Shin Mina also fits the part well — though I can’t help but wonder if the pairing will seem too much like a noona with her kid brother. Well, I’ll stay optimistic.

This is interesting. I like Shin Min-ah well enough, but I agree with you. She seems a little old for the part, considering who the other lead is. Welp, can’t judge her too soon, she might surprise us. Plus it’s a Hong sisters’ drama, so I have faith.

I do agree with you JB, when I first read about this news, I was just like “WHAT???!!DOES SHE LOOK A LITTLE BIT TOO OLD FOR SEUNG GI?”.honestly, I prefer someone who looks younger since it’s Seung Gi to be the lead male,..SSK is also a good choice,but maybe they have their own reason to cast Min Ah. I just hope that they can make them looks like a couple with the same age,not noona and dongsaeng couple (i’m tired of older woman and younger man relationship lately,only a few of them works).hope Min Ah will look more younger in this drama,so she can fit Seung Gi really well.

Not feeling the pairing. Also I always get a pure and sweet vibe from Shin Mina and I’m expecting more playful. sexy femme fatale.
Also I have not seen any role Shin Mina did where I really loved her. Not in movies and in any of the kdramas JB mentioned above. Her acting is what I would categorize as serviceable but that said “hail hong sisters”. I’ll keep the faith going.
Pretty much regardless of the female casting I’m excited for this drama because it’s the Hong Sisters and I’ve loved every single one of their dramas and their dramas keep getting more and more solid. And I like Lee Seung Gi. He’s soo adorable and I enjoyed him in Brilliant Legacy. I hope there’s not another actress change though.

actually i prefer shin minah, and even if she is more “noona-ish” that’s what i actually thought was the concept for this drama. i always imagined the female lead being more of the assertive type rather than the innocent type who doggedly follows lee seung gi’s character. her being assertive -and older in both looks and age – makes it more believable to me that she is someone whom lee seung gi would be afraid of. i can then see that the gumiho really COULD just eat anyone’s liver or whatnot.
shin se kyung – no offense – is so young and innocent looking that i can’t see her being “ferocious” or anything like a monster.
When it was Shin Se-kyung, I could picture the pairing and see it working out. He’s young, she’s young, and they’re both relatively “fresh” faces.
Maybe I’m slightly biased after watching Naked Kitchen (she didn’t leave a very good first impression), but…..come on. She DOES look significantly older (even if their real ages aren’t that far apart) and it feels like he’s going to start belting out….”Noonan neh yuhja nee kkaaaaaa~”

well jeon ji hyun (81er) would have been even older than shin mina (84er), although i think shin mina looks a tad older for her age. still…. hopefully they’ll have chemistry.
i actually like this re-cast because she actually fits the role. i wasn’t too excited when i heard about shin’s cast in this drama at all.
I don’t know if I agree about the noona-ish thing because as far as I can tell, the gumiho is a kind of fierce, sexy role and I think that Shin Min Ah will pull it off well. I hope that this is this is the final say, not because I really like Shin Min Ah, but because I’m sort of sick of hearing about the cast changes and just want to wait for the drama.

Well, considering the fact that she’s supposed to be 500+ years old, I don’t mind her being a little older than LSG. Because seriously, I think the perceived age difference is going to be the LEAST of their Kdrama problems.
I always liked SMA, and LSG proved himself somewhat in Brilliant Legacy, so I’m looking forward to this.

i lilke her…maybe she looks “older” but the pairing of SYJ and LMH works well so i think this will too…beside if the storyline is about gumiho, i think the lead female should be an actress that beautiful and “deadly”

damn…im a little dissapointed…i mean i cnt judge shin minah because i havent seen her anything….bt seeing her profile she’s o ky done seriously….so i wonderif she has the comedic chops to pull off a hong drama…the other issue is the age…she does look older for her age which only make her look way older than baby faced seung ki…bt then again maybe the role requires that…its just that I’ve been seeing way to many older actress-younger actor dramas lately …well they did make it work well in personal taste…so who knows if it could be the same here…plus its a hong sister drama who have the knack of pulling off any situation….so like JB and ,others here im happy nevertheless!!

Honestly, when I first read the description of the gumiho, I thought of Shin Min Ah. Someone a little older, trickster but with sex appeal. I just never thought she’d actually do it, since it’s been so long since she’s done a drama.
Well, now I’m excited!
And now I want to know who the secondary male and female is going to be. I’m hoping for a really juicy secondary male.

I’ve nothing against Shin Se-kyung, but I do prefer Shin Min-ah~! Have never seen SSK’s acting, though I’ve heard many comments about her (mostly good but some commented that her acting’s boring), so I’ve never felt exactly excited that she is cast as the Gumiho. Now I’m completely excited to hear that SMA is the Gumiho!! I’ve not watched SMA in her big roles but I’ve seen her in her smaller roles in my early years of K-drama-watching and she has left a good impression in my mind. Plus SMA is one of the goddesses in S.Korea with her beautiful face and gorgeous figure which fit the Gumiho image nicely! Woohoo~! *dance around with joy*
im glad of this over SSK- she just too sweet looking, i cant see her fitting in the role. But i’ve only ever seen her in High Kick and My Littl eBride, so maybe I just havet seen enough of her. it think SMA will be better because she’s fiercer/stronger, in image
i think shin mina would be a good fit. Even though she doesn’t seem as otherworldly as Shin SeKyung, i think she feels right for me…
as for the age gap- it worked with Son Ye Jin and Lee Min Ho, so i’m not too worried. I know Shin Mina looks older but styling can help a lot. I’ve noticed that sometimes she would look really plain (like you wouldn’t give her a second glance if you saw her on the street) and other times, she would look sleek and gorgeous.
I cannot wait for Shin Minah’s role in this Hong Sisters project. Finally a drama after a three year wait, and a project after a year of nothing but CFs.
JB, may I request for another picture to be posted of Minah, hehehe? I love the Viven picture, but there are many comment about her looking too old for LSG, even though Minah is known for her baby face.
Minah can balance the innocence and sexiness, and ferocity needed for the role.

Wow, I’m excited now. When I thought it was SSK, I was a bit MEH~ I’ve somehow watched all of her dramas (lol esp. High Kick Through The Roof-she was a bit bland there too) and she never stood out to me. :/

They replace Shin Se-kyung ..with a clone of her.. sort of. Both are not what I would called gorgeous, but body wise, A+
didn’t watch her drama w/ rain coz i don’t like rain, but i love shin min ah in the devil and the naked kitchen. good actress, imo.
i had the same worries.. that shin min ah might look much older than lee seung gi and the pairing wont fit but im a HUGE fan of shin min ah and totally adore her so this is good news, and i love lee seung gi. wow im so excited for this drama!!
