Um. Wow. That’s pretty much all I’ve got left in my brain after seeing this still from The Housemaid, which was just released.
The film is currently at Cannes International Film Festival, where it screened yesterday (May 13). The Korean press has kept a close eye on the reaction, and particularly regarding its stars Jeon Do-yeon (who won Best Actress at Cannes for Secret Sunshine in 2007) and Lee Jung-jae. Initial press has been generally positive (calling it entertaining) and while The Housemaid has been described as suspense thriller, it also drew laughs for its black comedy. In addition to the two leads, veteran actress Yoon Yeo-jung drew praise as the elderly housekeeper.
The cast and director gave the film’s official press conference at Cannes today, where the director explained that he was surprised when not just one but two Korean films were accepted into the festival’s competitive portion (the other is Poetry, which stars Yoon Jung-hee and Ahn Nae-sang). He also talked about the necessity for updating the film from the 1960 original, pointing out that Korea is well-known for its incredibly fast development in the past half-century, but that the central themes at the core (adultery, love, sexual relationships) are just as relevant now as they were then.
The Housemaid also released yesterday at home, and has already attracted an impressive 170,000 theatergoers in its very first day.

I love explicit Korean movies, or KSex as I like to call them. Because, it’s never just about the sex. They always (usually) make it an integral part of the story and not just a sex scene in and of itself. Sure, I’ve seen some that were just straight-up soft core porn diguised as plotted movies, but I didn’t mind those either, heh.

Women pose in super seductive ways all the time and we’re just used to it. Give us one photo of a guy who isn’t revealing much more than any normal bathing suit- and everyone is all gaga. Don’t get me wrong- this is a hot photo…but it’s rarity reminds me how little men get sexualized like women.

Air City – terrible drama story wise, but he is hotter than that volcano in Iceland, and Choi Ji-woo has rarely been this sexy and in charge. They had good chemistry.

From your post, the source article seems to be incredibly positive about the movie. I read a lot of reviews (I tried to get varied sources from French, American, and Asian media) and I can say that they are not all that good. It’s true though, that the acting, especially Jeon Do Young’s was applauded.
In short, critics have been disappointed in Im Sang Soo’s take on the 60′s classic blaming the fact that he heavily highlighted the sexual and violence themes without creating enough depth in his characters. Apparently the plot is also a let down.
I followed the press conference and it seems the director is very confident in his work. When he was asked about his previous statement that his film would be the least boring of the competition, in short he answered: “you’ll know what I meant at the end of the competition”. Seems pretty cheeky to me, lol.
I had really high expectations about the movie from watching the trailer, so this is kinda sad. Anyway I really want to see it now to make my own opinion.
On another note: I watched a few extracts from Poetry (the other Korean Film in competition) and I have high hopes for this one. It’s definitely not the same genre (nor directing style) as the Housemaid but It seems really good.
