The Housemaid screens at home and at Cannes
by | May 14, 2010 | 167 Comments

Um. Wow. That’s pretty much all I’ve got left in my brain after seeing this still from The Housemaid, which was just released.

The film is currently at Cannes International Film Festival, where it screened yesterday (May 13). The Korean press has kept a close eye on the reaction, and particularly regarding its stars Jeon Do-yeon (who won Best Actress at Cannes for Secret Sunshine in 2007) and Lee Jung-jae. Initial press has been generally positive (calling it entertaining) and while The Housemaid has been described as suspense thriller, it also drew laughs for its black comedy. In addition to the two leads, veteran actress Yoon Yeo-jung drew praise as the elderly housekeeper.

The cast and director gave the film’s official press conference at Cannes today, where the director explained that he was surprised when not just one but two Korean films were accepted into the festival’s competitive portion (the other is Poetry, which stars Yoon Jung-hee and Ahn Nae-sang). He also talked about the necessity for updating the film from the 1960 original, pointing out that Korea is well-known for its incredibly fast development in the past half-century, but that the central themes at the core (adultery, love, sexual relationships) are just as relevant now as they were then.

The Housemaid also released yesterday at home, and has already attracted an impressive 170,000 theatergoers in its very first day.

    @99

    you do realize whether someone ‘bitchy’ or not has nothing to do with how I would rate their physical attractiveness.

    In Hee might not be the most angelic female character to grace the screen, but her objective physical attractiveness is undeniable…since that’s prob why she was cast for her role.

    Kae In, likewise, was cast due to her ability to portray dorkiness.

  2. 102 mookie

    oh bud,

    ‘you do realize whether someone ‘bitchy’ or not has nothing to do with how I would rate their physical attractiveness.’

    O betcha we ALL thoroughly DO, we can read your brain in and out. *nod*

    another round of virtual Bud on the house. CHEERS!

    @ 86 momosan. The last time anyone bothered to ask, was back in the YAB craze when someone said “jeebus, you guys are just a bunch of teenage fangirls!!”

    That craze was fun! :)

    “I’m old, not dead”… SO TRUE!

    @ starscream.

    You must be young. You need a hot girl like In Hee to show how macho you are? What? Is she just a trophy? Pity your girl. Just see the outside only. Ever heard of the phrase ‘For Your Eyes Only’. Kae In can be sexy…behind close door! That what love is.

  4. 104 melica

    Lee Jung Jae is a seriously hot man in a very enjoyable hot picture.

    If all it took was a cut boy without a shirt, I spend $12.50 on a crappy Abercrombie and Fitch t-shirt and carry the bag home.

    @101 Starscream

    Falling into a little Baltimore speak here…Hon, that’s a fine looking dude.
    For a bunch of us to say “Wow! That’s a FINE looking dude!” and to express a little enjoyment of it? Meh!

    And it is possibly quite a bit of shock if all you knew of him was his oppa role in Triple, which was lamentable, frankly. And that’s a provocative picture, especially for a Korean film.

    mookie – I’ll take a Hurricane please….

    woah!!!! *gulps and swallows hard*

    javabeans, you mush have had a bit of a brain freeze after seeing this photo. You made a little mistake in the header for this post. (at at) hehe. TOTALLY understandable!

  7. 107 birdscout

    @106

    haha, I must (*mush) have had a brain freeze, as well. Or rather, my brain just turned to mush.

    Look, people, no need to get so… offended. I always thought Dramabeans was much more mature than the regular Allkpop group of teenage fangirls. That’s why a lot of the discussions that go on are very in-depth, thought out, etc. Although I don’t think I necessarily fit into what I believe is the general demographic of Dramabeans (probably younger), but the general maturity level here is a lot higher, although sometimes the silliness makes it seem otherwise.

    If you don’t like it, don’t come here, then. Nobody’s forcing you to visit, right?

    @ Starscream

    Okay, wow. Wow. This is why I made the post in OT complaining about how men in real life really (and at times, I mean REALLY) pale in comparison to the male characters of Korean dramas. It’s like Korean dramas serve as character foils to real life men, at times.

    We’re just complimenting a nice bod from a great actor. Maybe we’re a little silly about it, but that’s all that is. But that doesn’t mean we’re completely hormone-driven people. We appreciate nice qualities in people. You know, something not just physical, probably. Ever considered that?

    I would choose smart, intelligent, average-looking with nice traits over brainless, dumb nice body any day. Please.

    haha. I didn’t see your post on the previous page, but it’s funny how I wrote almost the same thing as you did. Cheers!

    omg, this is hot. can’t wait to watch it!

  16. 116 tokyojesusfist

    The comments here are absolutely bizarre. You don’t see me going crazy every time I see a scantily clad attractive woman on the Internet. I thought women were supposed to be less “visual” than men anyway, making this even more odd.

  17. 117 song4u2

    @116

    Lies, all LIES! Remember that, okay snookums….

  18. 118 melica

    @116
    Uhhh… maybe you are inured because there are scantily clad women everywhere, in all advertising, all the time. The comparison isn’t remotely similar…

  19. 119 lovedramas

    I think the readers/followers of the blog are just having in a little fun in their comments since this isn’t necessary among the “usual” posts on this site. But I don’t really think there’s anything wrong with that. I personally was a bit surprised by the photo, however, not at the fact that JB posted it, but the fact that they released the still of it. I know why – it’s definitely stirred interest… but I was a little surprised. Still – I don’t see JB’s site as being family friendly. My kids are way too young to use internet, but even if they were tweens/teens, I still would not want them on this kind of site. College age – sure, but teenie poppers – no way. I just think it’s a mature site and discusses mature topics and dramas. Plus, I highly doubt that they’d want to be on a site that their mom reads haha.

    Someone please get my brain out of the gutter…ASAP.

  21. 121 Celest

    Oh my goodness.

    lol! I’ve never seen more one-liner comments, “drools” and “Wows” before. The comments on this one are interesting to read. I would suggest JB that you should probably post an “NSFW” before going into this picture directly. Thank goodness I’m not in a public place!

  22. 122 ockoala

    @ tokyojesusfist

    “I thought women were supposed to be less “visual” than men anyway”

    Really?!?! OMG, I never knew that. My parents never told I was “supposed to be less visual” and to use my imagination more from reading about scantily clad men as opposed to viewing them.

    Thanks for educating me, I must have also missed that lesson in 5th grade sex ed.

    Oh, and pardon me while I go lace up my corset, button my Victorian-era gown to the bottom of my chin, and put on my burqa before I leave the house.

    Cheerio. Sorry our frank persual of a male form distressed you so. I highly suggest you avoid the British Museum, lest you see women admiring the Elgin Marbles. Oh, and stay away from Florence, Michelangelo’s magnificant David is there, and I recall parking myself in front of that statue just admiring his artistry. That will likely also be extremely bizarre for you to see. 8-)

  23. 123 JInny

    Okay, I just died a little inside.
    In a good way.
    In a verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry gooooooood way.

    I’m just glad that you guys got a wonderful Friday’s treat….I think it’s a good way to end a stressful work week.
    I think JB understands that most of us appreciate something interesting/fun in her site. I’m one of the old timers here( yes,chronological and experience -wise),so for those of you who are offended by our responses…EXCUSE us….meantime,I’m LATE in joining my FRIENDS here in our friendly get together….Ockoala,Momosan,and Mookie…I’m coming…get me a beer,too.(Trust me,I needed one today!)

  25. 125 A.

    @ ockoala

    LOL, I love you. Thank you.

  26. 126 Ally

    Lol it had to be awkward once the scene ended.

  27. 127 fyoora

    I think the woman’s head nearer to LJJ’s chest than to his bottom…she’s kind of looking at him. still, it’s a good way to attract viewers, isn’t it? can’t wait to see this movie :)

  28. 128 Can't wait to see this.

    If you want to see a really young and very beautiful Lee Jung Jae, watch him in The Young Man. He was hot in An Affair too. He’s still hot as hell and will be for some time to come. Hot is just hot.

  29. 129 tokyojesusfist

    @18 So you are saying that women exist in a bubble where they just aren’t exposed to this kind of imagery? Preposterous.

    @22 Just because you think something does not apply to you in particular does not mean that it can’t be true in general.

    “Oh, and pardon me while I go lace up my corset, button my Victorian-era gown to the bottom of my chin, and put on my burqa before I leave the house.”

    So I’m responsible for brutally oppressing women Taliban-style because I said they are less visual than men (which is true, regardless of your opinion on the matter)? This does not make any sense whatsoever. You are being hysterical and irrational.

    “Cheerio. Sorry our frank persual of a male form distressed you so.”

    As I already clearly stated, you don’t see me getting bent out of shape because there’s an almost naked woman somewhere. It just isn’t a big deal.

  30. 130 celestialorigin

    Wow! I’m joining Wow club here. It looks heart poppingly sensational and beautiful. Meantime, the ambiance of this images is endearing, sincere and somewhat melancholic… loaded with subtleness. I can’t wait to watch this!

  35. 135 Eleven11

    @ A. <——– THIS!

    My boyfriend's probably average looking, if I look at him objectively. Not ugly or anything, but no Lee Min Ho (=p). But I love him more than any hot body out there. He's funny and intelligent and just completely awesome, really!! Personality beats movie star looks any day.

    @Starscream. If you were fanboying over the actress who plays In-Hee as opposed to In-Hee herself, you wouldn't be getting up everyone's noses. She IS a very sexy, attractive woman. The character she plays on the other hand is an emotionally retarded train wreck of a human being (most people who read this blog would read that as unattractive).

    It's like your comment 'I should take my shirt off more often because then I'd get all the ladies, yo' makes you unattractive. If I saw your 'hot bod' and heard that you had said something like that, I (and all of my attractive, intelligent, young ladyfriends) would run the other way, or perhaps stick around to watch you make a dick of yourself.

    @tokyojesusfist – I confess I didn't read all of your posts cloesly, but if what you were trying to do is simply point out the inequality of male/female sexualisation portrayed in the media then I agree with you, women as sexual objects is far more common in our society than the male form. Which is while I feel that I'm simply 'levelling the playing field' when I have my little squee over pictures of attractive guys. (ALTHOUGH, STARSCREAM, IF I FOUND OUT THEY WERE EGOTISTIC JERKS, I WOULD NO LONGER FIND THEM ATTRACTIVE)

    Although, it's not really just the attractive naked guy that makes this photo hot. It's hot because of all the implied sexuality and sensuality. If the woman wasn't there, that close to a man's naked body, it would be a completely different photograph. In a sense, this picture is still more about female sexuality than male.

  36. 136 maria

    first– @A.: “the point is, some of us, i think, have a better sense of humor than others”—> HAHAHAHA, THIS, SO MUCH, OVER AND AND OVER AGAIN! LOLS :D

    @eleven11: you took the words right out of my mouth! my sentiments regarding starscream were perfectly expressed. the argument was not delineated between the ACTRESS that plays in hee and in hee herself as the caricature (of being the devil’s whore– creative license. sue me. lol) starscream’s comments probably wouldn’t have garnered so much reaction if that tenet was properly defined— then again, that may have been his point altogether. just sayin’. :P

    @starscream: your comments have no accounting of the ability of PEOPLE, men OR women, to be able to see the forest AND the trees at the same time. the truth is, there is no such thing as objective beauty, so we are allowed a moment to look at the trees before we can appreciate the beauty of the entire forest. and while we can appreciate a PART of something solely for what it individually triggers, don’t discount that we don’t know the value of the forest, as a whole too. —— which brings me to:

    @lee jung jae:

    Stop mucking up the sandbox, you party pooper!

  41. 141 amareally

    OH DEAR LORD …………

  42. 142 bippa

    There’s really no point in arguing over whether KAE-IN or IN-HEE are beautiful…but it still irks me that you assume your standard of beauty is THE standard for every hetero man on earth.

    While many people agree on what is aesthetically attractive, there is a WIDE range of personal OPINIONS, each valid, when physical traits are accounted for.

    “In Hee might not be the most angelic female character to grace the screen, but her objective physical attractiveness is undeniable”

    I just denied it. Completely seperate from her personality, I, as a “redblooded” male in the REAL world, do not find IN-HEE attractive.

    and CERTAINLY not more attractive than KAE-IN [again separate from her "dorkiness"]

    Regarding your other comment:

    chincha?…you…writing for DRAMABEANS???!?! If you were serious, you’d start your own website.

    But, its more fun just reading the reactions to your incendiary comments here…isnt it?

  43. 143 tokyojesusfist

    @35 “If what you were trying to do is simply point out the inequality of male/female sexualisation portrayed in the media then I agree with you, women as sexual objects is far more common in our society than the male form. Which is while I feel that I’m simply ‘levelling the playing field’ when I have my little squee over pictures of attractive guys.”

    I was only pointing out that people are overreacting to this post. The reason why there isn’t as much “male sexualization” in the media is almost certainly because there is just no demand for or interest in it (there is, however, great interest in things like romance novels and Twilight, which are often said to be the female version of porn). You actually demonstrate that yourself by saying that you’re only making noise about this because of political or ideological reasons.

  44. 144 A.

    @ tokyojesusfist

    You did NOT just call Twilight the female form of porn. Twilight is the… trash form of writing. I’m sorry. Twilight is possibly the dumbest sensation that has hit this world. I don’t get sparkling eyes creeper Edward Cullen or annoyingly whiny Bella. Twilight, I feel, is a pitiful excuse for people who don’t read but yet want to seem intelligent, because, *gasp* they can read a book, however dumb that book is. To call something that… brain cell killing “female porn”?! That’s insulting. We have better taste in our porn than that. (Sorry, Twilight fans, I just don’t get it.)

    And, again, with the over-exaggeration: STOP BEING A PARTY-POOPER. What part of “sense of humor” do you not get? Probably the humor part? Can I facepalm myself now?

  45. 145 hmmmmm..

    im not into the arguement.. i know we, woman are just having fun.. but its just not so cool to exaggerate it that much on such still.. could we be more relax?.. like, wow, he’s hot. ok. but i get it, its just for fun. hmmphh..

  46. 146 JJ

    idk why we can’t just oogle in peace… i mean why can’t we peacefully enjoy & appreciate a VERY NICELY SCULPTED MAN… it’s not like guys walk around looking like that.

    @Starscream: does age matter when you see a picture like the one above; when it is compelling to admire such a body?
    … i don’t get the point of you posting…
    okay yeah, you can take your shirt off and parade around town & girls will comment on your body (if it is even in the slightest way similar to the way you implied it is..)
    but once you open your mouth, they will see how vastly unattractive you are.

    *i mean seriously what else is there to comment on? his intelligence? on how big his heart is or emotionally stable he is?*
    IT IS a picture of a naked dude, you comment on the nakedness.. duh.
    ugh.

    -we don’t have to argue about how AWEsome his physique is..-

    @ELEVEN11: ditto.

  47. 147 tokyojesusfist

    @44 “You did NOT just call Twilight the female form of porn. Twilight is the… trash form of writing.”

    And I suppose porn movies compete at Cannes?

    “I don’t get sparkling eyes creeper Edward Cullen or annoyingly whiny Bella.”

    You don’t, but lots and lots of other women and girls do.
