Coffee House: Page 6

The plot thickens! With Episode — er, Page — 6, we have our first heart-tugging episode, and a deeper understanding of the emotions buried in these characters’ histories.

One thing I really like about these SBS Monday-Tuesday 9pm shows is that they’re slightly shorter than the average prime-time episode. The dramas in the 10pm hour average about 1 hour and 5 minutes, give or take a few minutes. These 9 o’clock SBS shows are clocking in at 55 to 57 minutes, so while they’re all approximately 1 hour long, dropping 8 to 10 minutes makes a world of difference in how they FEEL. I think that’s why I’ve been hooked into watching three of them (out of four total so far — the only one I haven’t watched fully is Angel’s Temptation).

PAGE 6 RECAP

Eun-young awakens from her dream of the accident that killed Jin-soo’s wife with tears on her face. Jin-soo enters the room to see them, and although she waves them off as nothing, he doesn’t buy that, although he doesn’t press for an explanation.

The assistants (Hyun-joo and Dong-min) joke about the situation, imagining how funny it must have been for Jin-soo to have come upon Eun-young in the altogether. With anyone else this would have been fodder for a romance story, but with these two they’re more likely to end up in court.

Seung-yeon asks about their history, and learns that Eun-young was friends with Jin-soo’s wife, who has since died. This is shocking, since she was told they divorced. Hyun-joo clarifies that the woman died in an accident not long after the divorce, to which Dong-min wonders, “Wasn’t it suicide?”

(Theory! If Eun-young and Jin-soo got together after the divorce, leading to the death of the ex-wife, that adds a heckuva lot more guilt, which would prevent them from pursuing a relationship. Ooh. Interesting.)

Jin-soo can tell that Eun-young is feeling blue, and asks what the matter is. She provides plenty of legitimate reasons for feeling depressed — she’s injured, she had to cancel meetings, he saw her naked — but again, Jin-soo senses there’s more to it.

To cheer her up, Jin-soo tells her that she was right: she does have an awesome figure. Eun-young scoffs that he didn’t even see her, but he replies, “Men can see everything worth seeing in one second.” He even offers to draw her a picture. Lol.

Getting serious for a moment, Jin-soo tells her that it depresses him to see her depressed, “So cheer up.” Eun-young brushes this aside, telling him to knock off the nice act. Jin-soo tells her, “You know I’m not acting.”

What I like about these two is that they obviously care for each other, but they’ve developed this dynamic where they communicate through arguing, joking, and irony. Heartfelt emotions make them uncomfortable, so even when they’re sharing a moment, they laugh their way out of the earnestness. Based on what we’ve seen thus far, the one who laughs first is the one feeling more vulnerable in the moment, and in this case, that’s Eun-young.

Anyway, Jin-soo’s got lots of research to conduct, and he’s off to work with his “Kyak-kyak” secretary — that’s the sound she makes when she’s enjoying herself, which he demonstrates for Eun-young.

I just about died when Jin-soo produces Seung-yeon’s “Kyak!” squeal and mimics her hand-clasping gesture, because that is pretty darned close to her real expression, as she demonstrates when she oohs over his horse Andromeda. At least that’s the name he gives her; she finds out from the stable hand that the horse is actually named Bok-soon. One of these days Seung-yeon will learn to discern joke from truth, but today is not that day.

Seung-yeon marvels at the lovely surroundings and how cool Jin-soo looks, but her own day is not to have that kind of grandeur. Pretty much the exact opposite, in fact: Jin-soo puts her to work taking photographs of horse poop. Not just one kind, but all varieties, from all different types of horses.

When she finally finishes taking said photos, she’s finally able to pull out the tissue she’s stuffed up her nose and talks to Jin-soo with a tinge of an attitude. (I love that she’s finally starting to snark back at him, although she drops the snippy tone as soon as Jin-soo calls her out on it.)

When he hands her his synopsis, she loses her grasp on the papers, which get carried off in a gust of wind and land in the manure pile. Jin-soo sighs that she wouldn’t be her without a snafu like this, and asks pointedly, “Don’t you know what you have to do?” Back in go the noseplugs.

With dismay, Seung-yeon starts picking the papers out of the dung, trying to keep as far away as possible. Which means that when she reaches for a paper on the far end, she stumbles… and falls… right onto the pile. Ewwww.

Jin-soo, ever the thoughtful employer, can’t have his secretary covered in horse poop and offers to help her clean off. With a grin, he holds up a garden hose, making Seung-yeon shake her head wildly in a mix of dread and anticipation. She asks, “W-why? What are you going to do?”

Jin-soo lets her have it, spraying her with water and enjoying every minute. When she runs out of range of the hose, he grabs a bowl of water and douses her with that. Seung-yeon retaliates with the hose. Jin-soo gets back at her by dumping the entire bucket on her. So she grabs a handful of dung — hey, she’s dirty anyway, right? — and chases him with it. I’d say that means she wins this round.

In her condition, Eun-young is forced to put up with Ji-won’s attentions when he comes to see her. She tries to pull her hand away, but his grip is strong and her mobility is limited, so she grimaces throughout his speech and tries to hurry his departure.

For example, when he tells her he was saddened enough that she took Jin-soo’s side at the boxing gym to consider letting her go, she bursts out, “Then let go!” He ignores that and kisses her hand, which makes her try again to wrench her hand free, resulting in neck pain. Ji-won enjoys having the advantage for once, and exults that she can’t run away or kick him. I’m sure she’s doing both mentally, though.

Now that Seung-yeon is sopping wet, Jin-soo suggests she buy some new clothes. They stop at a tourist shop, where she picks out a fairly normal-looking T-shirt and skirt, while Jin-soo tries to convince her to try on an ugly ensemble. She refuses, and goes to pay for her clothing, only to find that their credit card machine is broken. As she is out of cash, the elderly shopkeep asks her companion to lend her some.

Jin-soo generously offers to buy the outfit for her… but then he looks back at his joke outfit. Idea! He tells her to change outfits, refusing to pay for any new clothes unless he approves them first.

Into the ajumma-clown pants she goes. With Seung-yeon decked out in her garish new threads, Jin-soo jokes that he won’t lose her now. She asks what’s next on the schedule, which he declines to tell her — not because it’s a secret (she’ll find out soon enough) but because this is the answer that will annoy her. So when he looks at her to gauge her response, she refuses to give him the satisfaction. He asks why, and she retorts that that’s what will annoy HIM. Oh, little chickee is learning!

A ringing sound confuses both of them, as neither has brought a cell phone to Jeju Island. Tracking the noise to Jin-soo’s pocket, it turns out to be a phone Eun-young planted on him, to keep tabs while he’s on this working trip.

While he talks with Eun-young, Seung-yeon sees someone arriving — Ji-won! — and hurriedly warns Jin-soo. Whatever reason he has for being here, it can’t be good.

They duck around the corner to the souvenir shop, hiding in a fitting room while Ji-won looks around. Seung-yeon’s ice cream drips onto Jin-soo’s jacket, and he retaliates by smearing the spilled ice cream onto her face, which is so like him — he’s not one to let something slide when he could retaliate in kind, right?

Just as Ji-won turns to go, however, the planted cell phone rings, which draws Ji-won’s attention to the two pairs of feet in the fitting room. Jin-soo is able to silence the phone, but Ji-won assumes that a couple is getting busy behind the curtain and can’t resist peering into the room to check for himself (which is pretty pervy of him, really).

What he sees is even better than what he’s imagining, however, since (1) he’s caught Jin-soo in a compromising position, and (2) this gives him the idea that Jin-soo’s interested in his secretary, (3) which means he’s not going to be pursuing Eun-young. Win-win-win!

But on to the real reason for his visit. Seung-yeon watches from the car as Jin-soo and Ji-won talk a distance away. Worried that another fight will break out, she gathers rocks to arm herself should the need arise to defend Jin-soo. Say what you will about the character’s dumb tendencies (which are not inconsiderable), her loyalty really is touching.

Jin-soo supposes that Ji-won is here to pick another fight, so he’s shocked when Ji-won announces that he has decided to forgive him. Jin-soo’s reaction is quite telling, as he urges Ji-won to not forgive him, since he wronged him pretty severely. In fact, he’d understand if Ji-won never wanted to see him again.

Ji-won’s forgiveness comes with one condition — he tells Jin-soo to forget about any romantic interest in Eun-young, although perhaps this is unnecessary with Jin-soo directing his flirtations in a different direction. He explains his desire to let this go because the three of them — no, the four of them (including ex-wife) — have a lot of history together. Jin-soo is surprised at the suggestion of romantic feelings between him and Eun-young, but the mention of that foursome darkens his reaction.

(Based on the comments in previous episodes, it seems I may have been the only one who thought Jin-soo’s pranks were going too far, but I’ll still contend that they made me uncomfortable. If you pulled that kind of stuff in the States you’d be looking at criminal and civil charges for multiple offenses. I know this is a comedy and the prank was pulled for laughs, but I was a little uneasy about the extent of the joke. However, Jin-soo’s response here explains things, because he wasn’t looking to get off the hook. Underlying his jokester facade is a lot of anger at Ji-won, and he wanted to push Ji-won so far that he’d be deemed unforgivable. Thus he is now bummed to have that wish thwarted.)

Watching the exchange nervously, Seung-yeon almost unleashes her ammo at Ji-won, but is relieved when he walks back to the car without any sign of violence. Ji-won asks what she finds so appealing about Jin-soo, then figures that the young girls tend to like the crazies. He cautions her not to get too close, since she’ll end up hurt.

Seung-yeon has no idea what he’s insinuating and finds his comments perplexing, not to mention his trademark salute.

But her job is not yet done: Jin-soo has a message for Ji-won, which he directs her to deliver. When she hears what it is, she balks and tells Jin-soo to say it himself. He retorts that if he says it, Ji-won will kill him. Which is not exactly an encouraging thing to tell her. So with great apprehension, Seung-yeon knocks on Ji-won’s window and recites his words reluctantly:

Seung-yeon: “He told me to say it like this: Sunbae, I couldn’t tell you earlier, but don’t… act like… like… such a loser with Ms. Seo [Eun-young]. It’s really shameful to watch.”

That sure gets Ji-won’s attention, but that’s not all. Seung-yeon cringes as she carries out the last part of her instructions, and Ji-won’s eyes widen in rage to see the obscene gesture she’s making with her fist. (It’s the equivalent of flicking him off.)

At that, Ji-won tears out of his car to chase Jin-soo, who runs away.

Jin-soo laughs his head off as he relates the story to Eun-young, but she’s still subdued and doesn’t react with the same enjoyment. The source of this dismay appears to be different from before, however, because it seems like she’s jealous at how well Jin-soo is getting on with his secretary. Eun-young comments that it sounds like he came to Jeju to play around, to which he answers that even though that isn’t true, “it feels like I am, since my secretary keeps making me laugh.”

Eun-young prods Jin-soo about whether Ji-won said “anything weird” to her, and this time he knows what she means. However, neither wants to address the elephant in the room, so Jin-soo feigns ignorance, asking for clarification.

Eun-young sends Jin-soo away, saying that he needs the sleep and she doesn’t need him to stay with her. After he makes his exit, she sighs to herself, let down — it’s not like she was angling for him to stay, but rather that she wanted him to want to stay.

Proving that these two are once again in tune — or “on the same page,” har! (sorry, couldn’t resist) — Jin-soo comes right back into the room. He doesn’t make a big production of it, preferring to act like this is no big deal and not a sign of caring.

Eun-young admits that it’s nice having him looking after her, pointing out that he’s weak to two things: tears and illness. Half-jokingly, she suggests that she ought to have been sick earlier, since she’s never been the recipient of this side of him before. That’s about as close to an earnest statement as we’ll hear her make, and Jin-soo keeps his side of the conversation flippant, telling her that being sick on purpose would have gained her his attention but have lost her charm, which is her cool attitude.

Meanwhile, Seung-yeon chats with Hyun-joo, who comments that she’d like to find herself a star client like Jin-soo someday and set up her own publishing company. Seung-yeon takes her joke seriously about poaching Jin-soo as a client, so Hyun-joo assures her that Jin-soo and Eun-young will continue to work together. Not only that, but unless Eun-young cuts him loose first, Jin-soo would never betray Eun-young by leaving. The reason being:

Jin-soo has a history of running out of interviews, leaving for months without contact, and showing up unannounced as though nothing had happened. A flashback depicts one such scenario, and my, Kang Ji-hwan’s looking a lot like his swashbuckling Hong Gil Dong, isn’t he? Right down to the tinted glasses. (Given how Kang is said to pay excruciatingly close attention to the details of his characters, I’m sure this is no coincidence.)

Hyun-joo’s explanation makes sense, but as it turns out, there’s an even deeper reason for their bond, which I love. That night, Jin-soo sleeps on the couch in Eun-young’s room, while she looks at him pensively. His eye opens, indicating that this next flashback belongs to him, although it’s likely Eun-young is sharing the thought.

In the memory, Eun-young pounds on a door madly, knowing that Jin-soo is in trouble inside. A hotel employee opens the door for her, and she bursts inside, past the living room that is littered with alcohol bottles and scattered with pills (hence her apprehension about sleeping pills?). Inside the bedroom, she finds Jin-soo close to unconsciousness, sitting next to a glass of water and more scattered pills.

Eun-young pleads with Jin-soo to wake up, shaking him and slapping his face, trying to get some kind of response. His head lolls dully, and although his eyes are open, he’s so out of it that he doesn’t react.

Eun-young holds up a paper, telling him that this is a contract. She stamps his thumb to make it binding, and insists that he’s signed the contract now, which means he has a lot of work ahead of him. Sobbing, she slaps him again, urging him to find that will to keep writing and therefore keep living — and finally, he lifts his head up with some awareness, and a tear falls from his eye.

I LOVE this flashback, which not only gives us insight into their past but manages to make our hearts twist for their pain. It also makes Hyun-joo’s comment about Jin-soo never leaving Eun-young more meaningful, because he literally owes her his life. She forced him to come back to writing, which dragged him out of his emotional misery and allowed him to find the will to keep going. Therefore he’ll never leave her — as a writer indebted to his publisher, but also as a friend indebted to a friend.

Cute Dong-wook time! He knows that Seung-yeon’s away on a trip, but he heads over to her father’s cafe, curious to know if she’s back yet. It’s Sunday so the cafe is closed, as her brother Seung-chul informs him. Dong-wook lingers and asks hesitantly about whether something “has come,” which is unhelpfully vague. Fumbling for words, he asks about, you know, from Jeju Island… which Seung-chul interprets to mean juice. Or maybe tangerines? What else could come from Jeju?

It occurs to him belatedly that Dong-wook might be asking after his sister, and now he gives the guy the once-over with a knowing smile. He rushes home to report the news to an astonished Dad and Grandma: noona’s got a new prospective boyfriend!

Jin-soo and Seung-yeon are escorted back to Seoul by the employees, and Jin-soo is surprised to hear that Eun-young left in the morning without telling him. He asks Dong-min to call Eun-young, to which the employee uneasily fakes a call and reports that her line is busy at the moment. When the car pulls up to the back of the book cafe rather than the front, Dong-min makes a nervous excuse about construction.

All this tips Jin-soo off that something strange is going on, and he tries to figure out what. Unfortunately, he’s just about a split second too late, because it isn’t until he opens his front door that he realizes what’s going on, and it’s too late to escape. Eun-young has planned a television interview for him, and the filming crew is set up in his place. When he turns to leave, a crowd of apologetic company employees block his escape route.

Thus it’s too late to make a break for it. Eun-young introduces him to the director, and while Jin-soo shoots death glares her way, he has to put on an accommodating smile for the director, and exclaims politely, “Oh, don’t worry, it’s nothing!”

Jin-soo changes his clothes in preparation for the interview, after which Eun-young approaches hesitantly, mindful of his anger but wanting to smooth things over. She promises that this is the very last thing she’ll force him to do, and that starting tomorrow he can do everything his way. This is an interview he’d refused before, but which she had reminded him was necessary and unavoidable.

Bitterly, he deduces that she was planning this while he was sitting by her bedside at the hospital. This is why she insisted on staying in the Jeju hospital until the day of the interview, matching her release date to the schedule to make sure he didn’t leave early. (I don’t think he’s accusing her of faking her accident, but of maneuvering everything to direct him here according to her plans.)

She had prepared herself for his reaction, but she feels his sense of betrayal keenly. She tries to defend herself by saying she didn’t enjoy this, and then asks if they ought to end their contract after this book. She fears what will happen to them if they keep this up, which may even land them in court. He says caustically that she need not worry, since she’d win and he’d end up bankrupt.

That’s rather harsh, and Eun-young tells him that she’s not somebody who would just be excited to win in court. He asks, clearly not believing her, “Really?” She says, “Really.” He asks pointedly again, “Really?”

Eun-young starts to give in, saying, “If you really hate it so much…” But the arrival of the makeup team and support staff interrupts, and they start to work on him.

Seung-yeon also joins them, and Jin-soo makes his last attempt to take control of the situation. He sends Seung-yeon a look — not just any look, but a meaningful look, like he’s willing her to read his brain and catch on to his unspoken message.

He introduces Seung-yeon to the others, and gives her a coded message that sounds innocuous to the casual listener but emphasizes his meaning. What he says is, “You’ve worked for me for three months now, haven’t you? That means you should be able to guess what I mean by now.” But combined with his eye gymnastics and emphasis on certain words, he’s making sure that she knows he’s sending her a message. Like saying, “You should KNOW what I want you TO DO.”

Ah! After mulling over his words in her mind, Seung-yeon catches on and gets to work. She wanders around the office area casually, so as not to attract undue attention, while she grabs some of his supplies. A look out the window maps out her exit route, and she saunters over to the bookshelf blocking the back door, moving it just enough for someone to fit behind. She opens the door and leaves it ajar.

Thus when Jin-soo comes out to do the interview, he sees that she has set up his escape and casually makes his way over to the bookshelf. Her preparations give him a few seconds’ advantage and he races down the stairs and out the back way, where Seung-yeon is waiting with a taxi.

The employees chase him out of the apartment and into the street, and just barely miss him as the taxi speeds away.

In addition to her frustration with Jin-soo’s exit, Eun-young confirms that Seung-yeon was with Jin-soo — looks like Eun-young’s lesson sank in, and the secretary has solidified her allegiance to Jin-soo over her.

In the car, Seung-yeon is proud of herself for understanding Jin-soo’s message and managing this getaway successfully. On top of that, she’d managed to pack all his materials and supplies.

Seung-yeon explains that she worried about misinterpreting his intent or him taking the other route, but stops midsentence as Jin-soo reaches over to ruffle her hair enthusiastically, thrilled at this turn of events.

COMMENTS

I totally take back what I said in the first recap about liking this drama just as much without Kang Ji-hwan. Inititally the refreshing, wacky story was enough to get me onboard without the added draw of Kang Ji-hwan, but by this point he is bringing such added depth to the character — and some truly awesome comic acting — that I can’t see anyone topping his portrayal of Jin-soo. How is it that this supremely oddball, often rude and inconsiderate character is so endearing? On top of that, Kang has that ability to tap into his character’s veiled inner emotions, so that we’re given occasional glimpses into his vulnerable “real” side, but not full access. He controls how much we get to see, and he’s a master at that.

I like that we’re being fed little clues into the backstory without seeing it all at once. It’s enough to keep us intrigued and curious, but not so scant that we grow frustrated or too much that the mystery dissipates prematurely. I’m really digging how we’re peeling back the layers in Eun-young and Jin-soo’s friendship with each flashback.

We’ve still got plenty of room for an alternate pairing, because while the last sequence in this episode sets us up for a Jin-soo/Seung-yeon relationship, the flashbacks (and a few fleeting comments in present-day conversations) indicate that his relationship with Eun-young has deeper roots than first indicated. If they can heal those wounds, maybe they can get their second chance. Yet while I still think they’d be great together, I can see where the ending scene argues more strongly for Seung-yeon, because she stuck with Jin-soo while Eun-young “betrayed” him with the trick. Seung-yeon’s actions are purely motivated by wanting what Jin-soo wants; Eun-young’s actions are largely motivated by her own desires. I don’t think it’s wrong of her, because she’s a professional with a business to run, so I don’t hold it against Eun-young. It just differentiates the two women from each other. One could argue that this is hardly the first time Eun-young and Jin-soo have found themselves in this situation (her tricking him, him running away), but from Jin-soo’s reaction it appears that there’s something different this time around; that she was going too far. Maybe it’s because, as he pointed out, she was planning this when he was sitting by her bedside and being earnest with her, for once, instead of glib.

Last but not least, I’m enjoying the way this drama is directed with the different flashback styles. The comedic sequences are framed in that comic-book-like grid style, titled on its axis for a slightly skewed effect. Just like the humor it contains. Whereas the serious flashbacks are done in stark black and white, all hint of jokiness gone. The black-and-white flashback in this episode was one of my favorite scenes of the drama, and not only had great acting but was finished with the perfect musical and directorial touches.

Thanx JB for the recaps. didn't watch it yet.

just finish the third episode and I am really annoying and tired about JY. I can't explain clearly but after the two first episodes, my head was so hurting me that I needed a rest for 4 days. I tried hard to figure out why people so in love with her. She is really cute though.

the serious relation between JS and EY is more my taste. Maybe I am more enclined to watch serious heroin than naive one. enough with them! :p

even though we know the typical korean drama, a rich guy falls for innocents girls, but still i like Korean drama the best! they are able to portray their characters very well with their uniqueness!

thank you for the recaps! love your writing!

I think I have a EY obsession- sometimes I find her even more interesting than JS, which is saying a LOT! :)

I'm with EY-JS... sorry, I tried not to take sides, but it's hard- and in real life, I might be for the "easy" relationship all happy and smiles and starting over... but in kdrama, I LOVE the deep, understated, unspoken relationships that have endured through hell and high water.

SY is lovely, cheerful, makes JS laugh, is loyal but EY has stood by him through more years than I think SY can even imagine at this point.

I mean, an author who continuously puts you in tough positions by escaping interviews and his work, and you have to babysit through writers' block and worry about sleeping pills and everything?

I don't know, even though they talk about how JS would never abandon EY as an editor, I see it as the other way around as well... EY has never abandoned JS as a writer... even if she does force him to do things he hates, still she did manage to bring him back from the brink of disaster to the one thing she knew he could hang onto. His writing.

I think that counts for a loyalty of sorts.

Yeah, EY's mean, EY's tough on her star writer, EY's all work and no heart... but I think when it counted, EY's shown herself to be plenty of heart, plenty of support, plenty of loyalty and tenacity and, yes, strong enough for both herself and JS.

I too want to see a romance of equals, equal on capabilities, equally eccentric, equally burdened with skeletons in their closets. Tied together in mysterious ways, unable to say what they feel....

I heart EY/JS. :)

No offense to people who heart JS/SY, in fact I think their pairing is very possible... she is a lovely girl, no argument there, and also there when JS needed her, and I'm all for people who make you laugh.

But in my heart of hearts, I somehow love the mean, flippant, heartless EY more... and if she doesn't get her man, then I want her at least get to keep her dignity and grace and foul-temper. No clingy, silly 2nd lead girly roles for this woman, thank you very much.

Poor PSY!! I thought her character would be paired up w/ KJH's character at first. But honestly, after watched these six episodes, I'm quite sure that JS would end up w/ SY. There's still small possibility that EY would end up w/ JS, though, "SMALL." This situation makes me think of The Slingshot / A Man's Story, which seemed like (and they promoted it as) PSY was a leading actress, but after I watch the whole series, I don't feel like she is a leading actress at all. Meanwhile another girl who played Kim Kang Woo's sister, she is fit more to be called leading actress.
Anyway, I'm fine with any pair up, JS/EY is fine, and JS/SY is cute!!! So I will just enjoy the series.

Did you notice how SY's appearance is changing? Her clothing at the end of Page 6 was a nice, professional looking blazer. This seems pretty typical in kdramas. Often a romantic lead, whether male or female, starts out messy or with bad hair, and slowly becomes more attractive (or at least better dressed!).

I prefer JS with SY and JW with EY my reason is because EY was friends with JS's wife so them getting together after her death does not feel right., too many bad memories to overcome.

Whereas JS and SY are fresh and so cute together their relationship can grow, I love their silliness.

Thanks JB for your wonderful and very fast recaps. You are the Bomb.

I love the edits here too... e.g., the sound of JS and EY breathing in slow motion at the flash-back.... the sound of two desperate people very close to the edge. I really love KJH's acting.

I admit PSY's acting is not up to his standard, but I think she does a decent job, and her character is cool enough to take us along! :)

But I did love the MI music that accompanies each time SY does something funny for JS, like stop the night noises or help him to escape. Suits her! :)

@57houstontwin

YES!!! that blazer SY wore at the end of the ep was so nice i was jealous and wanted one! and then i realized "wait, i thought the nicest thing she owned was the pink frilly suit!?"

she's growing up! *sniff*

i think at this point all i care about is whether SY succeeds or not, because she's the character with a goal (to become pro). i don't really care for the pairings anymore, even though it's painful both ways (as in, i'd pity the other girl who doesn't end up being the lead).

Thanks JB for your recap... I do say that was mighty fast!!! I'm loving it as much as you. I am enjoying the humor, the chemistry between the characters and the plot so far.

So far I don't' see a romantic pairing, because it can go either way. EY has a long-time relationship with JS, but that relationship is still being unraveled and we get glimpses of it through the flashback. Did EY/JS have a romantic relationship in the past..... we don't really know and the flashbacks has not gotten us to that point as of yet. Does EY have feelings for JS.... most likely, but I am dying to know what their real relationship is all about.

I love SY, I love her quirkiness and naiveness, she's so funny. At this point of the drama, I do not sense that she has romantic feelings for JS, in fact, I believe that she is putting a lot of effort into being a pro secretary and romance is the furthest thing from her mind. How many times did she nearly get fired?.... a lot. How many times was she scolded by JS?... a lot. At this point, I see no love interest yet. She may be infatuated with him because he is a writer...., but is it puppy love?.... No.

I think DW is the cutest thing. I really enjoy it when he is on screen... not only is he good to look at, but he is so sweet, and we can tell that HE is falling for SY. THAT so far is the only romantic connection I feel in this drama. Personally, I would like a SY/DW connection, but as the relationship between JS/SY become much more deeper, I can also see her with him also, but I do prefer DW. The relationship between EY/JS will depend upon their history/relationship, which we are not quite sure of yet.

I don't think Eun Young's real intention was "betraying Jin Soo because of work". It's more like her defense mechanism. Because they have gotten close and hidden feelings were floating around, she wanted to get it back together by running away and trying to re-establish the publisher-writer relationship. She sort of wanted to put herself in place, and doesn't want to address the growing friendship between her and Jin Soo. But Jin Soo took it personally, hence the misunderstanding...

@46 deetdut & 47 LL

While it's true that JS has caused mighty big problems for EY and company and the fans and TV crew and the other organizers involved, people tend to give leeway to such eccentric people only because they can produce the stuff that they want. It's just a corporate relationship. For EY, of course, it's more personal. If JS cannot produce the stuff they want, do you think they will tolerate his eccentricity until now? No!! They will just dump him the first opportunity they get.

@63 Lan

Maybe JS did take it personally but I think even without EY's so-called betrayal, he would have found some way to escape anyway. It's just in his nature, not to do things that he doesn't have a fondness for. He prefers things done his way and if they don't, he will find some way to make it go his way. At least that's how I see it.

Sorry for the double comment. Actually, I wanted to merge the two posts together but for some reason, I couldn't edit the first post.

Team EY/JS all the way! Hehe... even if I don't agree with EY all the time.

@63 Lan - I agree with you on it being EY's mechanism. Now that JS is run off again, this will give her time to try and sort out her feelings for him?!?

Since everyone in this ep was mentioning how JS would never leave EY - I think EY will take the first step and let JS leave...to let him choose his happiness...

I am all for EY-JS FTW!!!

I love all the actors and characters in this drama.. =)

thanks JB for super fast recaps.

JS and EY have such a beautiful dynamic and relationship, with such a had history. Maybe even JW should be added in there a bit about the history. Anyway, it's absolutely interesting to watch.

BUT....as I said before, I think both pairings would be cliches. What close male/female friends so in tuned to each other turning into a romantic storyline, whether or not they end up together as the end game--that's just as cliche as SY/JS.

Really, I don't want there to be blatant and textual romance between JS/EY. I'd rather for it to be subtle and subtextual inklings. I don't know how many pairings I've seen over the years with various shows where when they go into actual romantic storyline, much is lost.

And add that with the history of JS/EY. I've become even more convinced. The relationship is beautiful because of its sad history and why they can't be together. There are sometimes when that's the case. It simply isn't ideal, and in my opinion it's better storytelling and writing when you show relationships like that. Where you know they can't go past that baggage and history to ever turn into lovers, and just watch the dynamic, relationship and characterization. And I actually find stories like that more appealing, having a greater and lasting impact.

As for SY, the actress is not as strong as the other two. It must be said, EY --PSY--has beautiful hair and legs. I noticed in episode 5.

But back to SY. I generally get annoyed by characters like her. Take SFFTS/WUAS. Pal Kang annoyed me till the death of her parents. I was so pissed and disppoionted with Kang Ha apologizing for not noticing her back when she was a bumbling worker who semi-stalked him. I almost stopped watching. (I did end up stopping a few more episodes in, but that's another story.)

But I think just like the show has gave more depth to EY/JS relationship, that it is different than other such male/female close relationships hinting at romance,

Just like that the show has given SY/JS more depth and is somewhat different than all the other boss/worker dynamics. They never were actually completely antagonist to each other. Actually started a more talking dynamic starting from episode 1, which extended afterwards. She is not all together unqualified. She was a chemistry major, not what is needed for this job but unlike other characters who are a bit whacky, they give her a solid degree and education.

And I have a feeling her cheerfulness may be a way of coping with her mother's death. Or it was something that helped her cope with the death.

Like I said before, I'd just watch this show for what it is and not even want romantic entanglements bringing too much angst and longing and staring. I have a feeling this show will handle eventual romance in a good way. So I'm just going to enjoy the ride.

lol all those EY/JS shippers always said that they will be super disappoint and the drama will be cliche if they pair up SY/JS, and they will stop watching the show...

Is this what everyone did? Watching the show for your fav, but dump it in the trash and talking shit about it if your fav isn't getting a "big" enough role. And label the rest as "cliché" and "boring" and "predictable".
(As if 2 people cant get together b/c his past wife died. Meanwhile, she's also the girl's friend, and the girl still stay next to the guy waiting and supporting blah blah is NOT CLICHE.
As if 2 awkward people somehow tangle up together, the ever cool looking silent dude end up with the young energetic girl is NOT CLICHE.
....)

True fans of the serie will watch the drama till the end, but shippers will keep on complaining and eventually will hate the drama because the directors cant please their asses.

I hardly see any SY/JS shippers whinning while there's a pile of "other" whinners in this article.

For a fact, I support SY and DW so I couldnt careless if SY will end up with JS, (in other word, I also support EY/JS) but seeing poeple drag and whine about how they look like uncle/niece, how if they end up it will be cliché, how "I dont know what but there's something not right about them" blah blha blha, I cant help but say "Shut up and just watch the damn thing"

PSY is so forced, the black white flash back is urgh. She's like a mobile flower vase to catch people attention (but not with her acting skill). She's beautiful? Hell yes. But is she as strong as the rest of the cast? Sorry, nah. I rather watch the grandma laying around sleeping and ranting than watching EY's "crying" scene.

And I still cant understand why they cast that guy for the second male lead. He looks like EY's uncle instead of her ex / follower.

So far I am enjoying every parts of CH. I do like JS characteristic built. More and more. KJH do the best potraying JS, well done KJH!!

about who will be paired with who, i don't care too much. because I think JS have deeper consideration about who will be choosed...don't know, but I think JS a good thinker hence any justification made by him to pair with some1 (SY or EY), I do support him..hahaha,see?? i love this character very much.

Anyway, I also consider that if EY pair with JS, there'll helps from SY. She has day to day activities with her boss then she'll know very well. his boss sadness then she'll help her boss find his happiness (his happiness:EY happiness which forget their past, forgive themselves and happily live everafter)

SY? If she not pairing with DW in the end, she find her happiness in another aspect,i.e: find her dream to be someone which make her mother proud.

then, I will wait and see..

I guess it is true : not having expectation helps me to enjoy a drama ride. Even if I'm still not convinced by the all CH thing (yet).

At soompi's some CH watchers (sorry I don't remember their names) suggested that SY might grow as a writer (of books, comics, whatever). And I really like this idea because I think that's the all point of her journey : growing as a PROfessional. And I really do think that JS will help her in this road.
It's like at the end of this episode : SY started to look more like a woman. Was it the outfit? Her self-confidence ? I don't know, but I thought : yes good for you SY lol

About EY who sets JS up with the broadcast interview. I think in a way she returned to her "cool" attitude where JS sent her right back with his STUPID remark at the hospital.
It's interesting to see that their routine (EY tricks him for some interviews/signature book and JS runs away from it) sounds so different for both of them this time. JS is hurt because he felt used and EY is hurt because he run away with SY. Something now is definitally different between these two. Even if they won't admit it, something happened in Jeju island... Hence the difficulty for them to draw the line between work and feelings now.

I totally undertand that people will choose to go for JS/SY pairing because it's light, fun and after CS and all its silly angst, it's like water in the desert.
But I feel more related to JS/EY pairing because love relationship is not just about the bright side. I just cross my fingers that angst won't turn CRAZY on us (yes CS I'm talking to you).

I'm surprised that with all the noises and promotions of Coffee House, ratings cannot surpass 10%. Is it only popular outside of Korea? It seems like the same case with Lee Jun-Ki's Hero and Kwon Sang Woo's Cinderella Man.

I think my comment in @69 had a lot of rambling and typos and didn't make sense, hence @70 misunderstood.

In summary. I wasn't dissing the SY or the girl who played her. Just saying, there are times where I find her acting a little lacking, but overall she's enjoyable to watch even though generally I dislike the whole clueless worker, etc.

As I said, I think this show makes it different and overall it's cute to watch and not really annoying as I've found with some other characters in other shows.

As for JS/EY, like I said a romantic pairing falls into cliche territory just like JS/SY would. But it's the handling of both these parings that make it different and enjoyable to watch.

As for my preference, like I said here and in another recap, I would prefer JS/EY didn't become outright romantic. So the default is JS/SY, and I do enjoy them together. And I think the writers will make the romance in a believable, natural progression.

I generally enjoy this series as a whole though. Shipping takes a backseat.

Thank you SO MUCH for the recaps! I am reading them faithfully, interested to see where this drama goes, because I am not watching it - and if JS ends up with SY, I will probably never watch it.

I guess I am just too old and jaded to find these stupid, bumbling, talentless girls charming. I swiftly got tired of Go Mi Nam, and by the end of YB I was ready to see her crushed under one of those ridiculous scrubbed statues. I think "It Started with a Kiss" is a blot on the landscape; BBF is a cultural wasteland.

Not only is the stupid/plain heroine - smart/handsome hero pairing unrealistic, I don't even think it really works as a plot device because you know that the conflict is going to be created by her bumbling mistakes, and solved by his clever manipulations. It may be funny, for awhile, but for me even the comedy wears thin after while when it is all based on someone's cluelessness.

In the case of JS/SY, I can see how she would be an amusing diversion, yes she makes him smile, but what can they really talk about, that wouldn't end up as a teacher lecturing to a student about life? Where could they possibly meet as equals? It is going to take more than a blazer to bring her up to his level.

I just get so tired of female leads that are so much younger, and poorer, and less intelligent, and more naive, and so on...for me, a level playing field is much, much more exciting. Sorry about the rant, I'm just really tired of young and stupid these days, but I also really need a comedy so I am toughing it out in the recaps.

I don't see anyone called EY a bitch and meangirl the kind of person u will hate in real life... plastic beauty and high heels...well let me be the first to bash EY then... and also PSY doesn't have what it take to be leading lady...becos she's not likeable enough for ppl to cheering for her...shes not charming and well most of her funny momént are not really that's funny..u know those kind of jokes like when pretty girls make joke that's not funny but guys are laughing anyway...well if there's gonna be more trash talking..let me know so I can ship in. @79, I don't think SY is being portrayed as stupid. A bit naive and innocent, but really, she hasn't caused major problems. The only time is when she allows JW to come up, which leads to th boxing fight. It may have happened anyway, though.

Regardless I can't think of any instance where JS is forced to clean up after SY other than coffee and pencils. And pencils have been been taken care of.

Everything else she's the one helping him. Or she's following his instructions, but not really causing much trouble. Even Jiwon getting angry at him, well it's Jin soo's own doing, is it not?

She didn't have JS come to her help after falling down the stairs, nor was she wailing and crying waiting for him. She wasn't waiting for him to save her, but rather waiting because they had agreed to meet there, and since she had no way of contacting him she thought it best to stay and wait.

She is overly cheery and bright, but I think either it is a defense mechanism or that trait helped her coping with her mother's death.

And plus the girl's a chem major. That actually showed not only with her analyzing with the microscope, but when she drew the diagram to figure out which sides were coming from where. Every chem major has most likely taken a bit of physics as well. Her approach was a very scientific, mathematic way of doing it.

That's actually the reason why I like SY as opposed to some other female characters in other dramas.

I do find it interesting that the reason she's even his assistant is because a guy liked/likes her. And now the manager likes her. But she's clueless as JinSoo himself observed in episode one.

But after finding out, she got it on the condition that after six months she will be a "pro" at it. She refused to just go by the routine as JS first suggested. And said she will work for it. And by now, she has become good at it.
**********************************************************

JS says she's worked for him three months.

I still don't see how it could've been three months, though. Maybe they are in the beginning of the third month. Because in episode 4, one month had passed.

It shouldn't be all that long afterwards that episode 5 started. Jiwon found out, and no way he would wait so long to confront JS. (I could believe that JS never even noticed about the pencils till a month in.) And they went to Jeju like the day of the incident, or at least the day after. Since the manager came to check up on her the day of her "firing" and fight. So they left for Jeju that night, and maybe spend a week there. (Being generous.)

The closest is that 2 months have passed and they are in the beginning of the third month. And that's stretching it.

Or am I missing something that implied a passage of time.

And I'm nitpicking way too much over the timeline of a drama.

Also, how much truth is there to Jiwon's assertion that they weren't as close two years ago and something happened in the two years?

He even said they both used to fight when he wasn't with them. They were all friends together.

When he meant fight, did he mean bantering as in episode one, or what?

Did the last flashback with her basically saving his life happen in the last two years?

If so, exactly how was their relationship after Jinsoo's ex-wife's death, while she was with Jiwon, till Jiwon left for Hong Kong? And if his depression/suicide attempt happened within the last two years, how was their relationship till that point.

Actually I should probably go back earlier. How were all four of their relationship when they hung out together in college?

Or rather, how exactly did their relationship progress during these years, circumstances and situations?

@82 she kind of is portrayed that way. maybe not STUPID but a fool that's for sure. and she's 25 working at her dad's coffee shop with no goals. not saying that makes her an idiot but they're obviously trying to portray her as someone who hasn't found their niche.

yeah.. I do think they are gonna give us a JS-EY pairing. Seriously though, a panda bear could walk on the set and marry Jin soo and I wouldn't mind, because this drama is one of the most well-written I've ever watched (wait, would it still be well-written if pandas got involved?). Point is, I'll take whatever happens in stride. I have one prob, and that's the techno they use during the dramatic flashbacks. WHAT IS UP WITH THAT?! Oh no, Jin soo's wife is dying (bom chikka bom chikka bom chikka bom chikka)! Oh no, Jin soo took pills! (bom chikka bom chikka bom chikka bom chikka)! I HATE IT SO MUCH! the hong gil dong thing kinda made up for it this time though.

also, can someone explain the dad's joke during the lettuce wrap scene? I didn't get it and was hoping it'd be in the recap, but I guess it was pretty minor. Still, i'd like to understand so help would be appreciated! thanks again for this recap! luv luv luv!

Still definitely with the SY/JW pairing. It's not that I dislike JW/EY but they both seemingly have the Alpha male/female vibe going on and although they are compatible because they are so similar... they don't really (at the moment) add that much to each other. Like I said, I don't know the actress that plays SY at all and I was rooting for PSY in La Dolce Vita but ATM I'm SY/JW all the way...

Plus I think that in several instances both JS and EY have been depicted as quite selfish and mean to others... e.g. EY getting SY to knock over dominoes and not caring if she gets scolded (until DW tells her to go help) and JW buying and forcing SY to wear those darn-awful clothes to embarrass her. Well it might be all in good fun and it was a laugh to watch but the idea of two such people getting together.... *shuddering*.

Great recap! I'm really enjoying this show so far, especially the writing and the directing. There's something zany and off-kilter about it that's really fun. Like others, I have some face-palm moments when SY does something really naive or stupid, but I think that's sort of the point. I'm pretty sure they have set up her character to be excessively 'amateurish' in the beginning only to emphasize her growth into a 'pro' later, so I give her a pass for now. I also think SY is a great foil for EY. Just comparing the respective coffee houses they run, their dynamics with JS, the way they dress...The differences speak volumes about their characters. It'll be interesting to see how things change as SY starts to grow, improve herself, improve her coffee shop, improve the coffee she makes...I think the hints of jealousy in EY are signs of things to come...just some speculating. But anyways, thanks for the recap!

Thanks for the amazing recap!! I initially wasn't planning on watching this drama but you've definitely gotten me hooked on Kang Ji-Hwan's cuteness!!!!

And I absolutely love the debate over the leads...haha so fun!! Although at this point I don't really care about the pairing of the leads, I must say that logically it would be JS/SY. Especially if they want JS to need SY. With a strong alpha female like EY around, would anyone really "need" an assistant? That being said....dramas never follow logic...and so the writers may just conveniently forget that part..

Man i a m really not for and JS and SY pairing, i don't know i think if that happens it will just be bowing to the cliche gods of kdrama. Come on how many shows have their been where there was an inept but hard working girl that through fortitude resilience won the respect, admiration, then love of her boss.

I don't know why i usually cheer on characters like SY but i just think the actress playing the part just hasn't brought that certain charm and likeability the character need

With JS and EW there is always underlaying current when they are together or even just talking about each other. You can see that the do have a deeper relationship that they always try to cover up by joking and fighting.

@85, I didn't say she wasn't naive. In fact there are plenty of times where I've groaned over her airhead-ness. Part of this I think have to do with the actress' abilities, but not fully. Nevertheless, I think my groaning has lessened as each episode passed.

I was refuting the fact that she is stupidly causing problems for Jin Soo which he has to clean up. Other than her not being able to sharpen pencils and make coffee, she's actually done what he's told her to quite well. And she started doing more than just perform inane tasks his characters perform.

And yes, despite her moments which made me groan, there was just something likeable about her for me.

That being said, while I do think it will be SY/JS, I don't think that means EY isn't also the lead. I really do think the story of JS/EY and JS/EY/JW/ex-wife is what's driving this whole thing. It's such an interesting and engaging, beautiful, sad story.

I just don't think they can ever cross that line, nor should they. To me, stories that deal with that aspect well (as I mentioned before) tend to be better stories and have a much more lasting impact.

the uncertainty of the pairing is holding me back from enjoying this drama... the one thing that I love about CH is KANG JI HWAN! Gosh he's becoming one of my favorite actors!!! I love how he plays with his character...

I have been reading some comments about the pairing and it seems that viewers have different views so i would like to share mine....

I am for Jin Soo/Eun Young pairing because:
1. they look good together ;)
2. although Seung Yeon has an adorable character (i do like her), she looks too young for JS... and the JS/SY moments do not give me a romantic feeling. (maybe it's just too early and the feelings are yet to develop but for some reasons i do not look forward to it)
3. Eun Young's charcter is admirable and their friendship is deeper than it seems.. I think it would be interesting to see their friendship turns to love... (or maybe the feelings are already there but they are yet to be realized) - my personal thoughts... ;)

anyhow... i am still intrigued on how the story goes...
