Coffee House: Page 8

A picture says a thousand words, doesn’t it?

I could tell from the way the Episode 7 recap went that the fan fervor would increase for this episode, which surely delivered. Aside from the laughs and the chemistry between the actors, one thing I’m really loving about this drama is the loaded conversations — there are a few really interesting passages of dialogue that play a lot with text/subtext and nuance, which I always enjoy.

PAGE 8 RECAP

Later that morning, Eun-young wakes up and thinks back to the dawn hours, when she had woken up to see Jin-soo deep in thought by the window. All he had said was for her to go back to sleep, but she had sensed the change in his attitude — serious, pensive — and comes out of the room wondering how Jin-soo will act now, in the light of day.

But he acts totally normal, chatting easily like nothing happened, and Eun-young looks disappointed. Like she’s bummed out at herself for expecting anything more.

When she heads to the bathroom, Jin-soo makes it a point to wait until she’s out of earshot to turn on some music. Whether he’s setting the mood or not, it’s a conscious move that tells us he’s aware of the change that Eun-young sensed, and that he’s purposely putting on his nonchalant front. As for Eun-young, she sighs to herself for bothering to come here to check on him.

Over breakfast, Jin-soo chuckles at his memory of last night’s movie outing and prods Eun-young to guess who Dong-wook likes. She guesses everyone else first (the cafe employees, her employee Hyun-joo) before landing on Seung-yeon, and marvels at the unexpected pairing. He jokes that if he’d interfered the date a little more, he probably would have been killed.

Having revised her opinion of the secretary, Eun-young gives her due credit — although she doesn’t seem to be especially sharp, she’s determined. With more development, Seung-yeon could become quite useful the more he continues to use her. But Jin-soo says that he can’t do that, because “I’m going to leave.”

This brings a serious note to the conversation as he says that he’s worked hard and written diligently for the past two years, so he wants to disappear for the next two. He feels he’s been here too long and wants to get away; they can always re-sign their contract at a later date. Eun-young’s sharp, and asks if that’s why he has thrown himself into his writing now — to finish quickly and get out of here. Jin-soo teases that yup, he wants to go far away to escape her nagging, but she doesn’t find it funny; he assures her it was a joke, but she corrects him — it’s the truth disguised as a joke.

Jin-soo promises he’ll stick around until the manuscript is done, and even agrees to do the TV interview, just this once. However, Eun-young sees that he’s keeping his gaze away from her, and she prods him to look at her.

Eun-young asks, “Did I dream last night? You’re the same person, but how can the look in your eyes be so different?” He knows exactly what she means but he throws humor up as a shield and makes exaggerated faces to keep the tone light.

Sigh! There he goes, pulling a Troy from Reality Bites. I hear Eun-young’s frustration with this, having known a few of those boys in my day. He’s using flippant jokes as a defense mechanism, and it’s clear that he’s desperately trying to avoid any sort of genuine emotion to protect himself, and Eun-young is the only one who sees that and can call him on it. But even though she understands, she’s disappointed at his response. Like he thinks it’s just not worth the trouble to be honest.

That feeling grows during their drive in to work, and she gets sick of his glib veneer. She calls him hopeless, but not in an endearing way — it’s in an “I’m so upset that you’re actually beyond hope” sort of way. Pulling over to the side of the road, she tells him to get out of the car, frustrated with herself as much as with him for thinking that things might be different this time.

Jin-soo starts the long walk to the office, where Seung-yeon waits at the door. He gives her a key with the excuse that it’s inconvenient for him to always open the door for her, but she appreciates the gesture.

Jin-soo asks Seung-yeon how “ice cream” went last night, said in a knowing tone since he’s really asking about her date. She doesn’t get it, of course, and says he should have come along, to which he laughs, “I can’t risk my life over ice cream.” He muses to himself about her curious appeal — he could kind of let Do-sang slide, but now Dong-wook as well? She looks at him questioningly, not quite able to hear and not understanding what he means anyway.

While checking some camera footage, Jin-soo finds something odd and instructs Seung-yeon to take a look, then leans over her shoulder to peer at the screen. The sudden proximity sends her nerves all a-jitter and she hunches away from him nervously. When he again leans close while she’s making his coffee, she lurches and exclaims wildly that he should stay at a distance, and complains how he’s always hovering.

This is all to cover up her uncomfortable budding attraction, but Jin-soo misinterprets her snappishness for rebellion. Offended that his employee is now putting on airs and daring to talk back to him, he gets mad right back and scolds her for taking advantage of his lax attitude. Lol.

In the safety of the bathroom, Seung-yeon scolds herself for suddenly losing control of her hormones, reminding herself that this is her workplace.

Ji-won drops by the cafe hoping that Disapproving Grandpa has gone by now. However, the employee informs him that Grandpa is sitting right outside, then calls out to get the old man’s attention. Ji-won reacts hilariously, saying furtively, “Don’t call him!” and ducking out of sight. But the employee then moves aside and points down at him, telling Grandpa, “Ji-won hyung is here.” Hehe. Ji-won forces a nervous laugh, bows respectfully, then turns to leave. (And almost runs into Jin-soo on his Segway. He’d like to give him a piece of his mind, but he’s too eager to get away from the dreaded Gramps.)

Grandpa recognizes Jin-soo and requests a chat with him. He dislikes Ji-won’s constant lurking around his granddaughter and asks Jin-soo to do something about it to get him away from her. It’ll be a temporary fix, because Grandpa figures that the ultimate solution is to marry her off — perhaps he should start sending Eun-young on blind dates. Mention of this dims Jin-soo’s smile a bit.

Eun-young joins them in the cafe, where Grandpa asks if she met that guy she was supposed to be set up with. She sends a quick look Jin-soo’s way before smiling it off.

When Jin-soo comes back to the office, Seung-yeon hands him the phone, awkwardly holding the receiver as far from her body as possible to keep Jin-soo at a distance. The call is from Eun-young, and he asks if she’s going on blind dates now, telling her that they don’t suit her. She jokes that he probably thinks she’s more suited to being a forever-single cat lady.

Eun-young is calling to give him her answer to his breakfast proposal regarding his future plans. She recognizes that he’ll leave no matter what she says, and from a business standpoint he’s too valuable for her to just cut ties. She adopts a philosophical tone — it’s not ideal for him to go off for months or years, but he’s bound to pop back up bearing a new book. As far as hypothetical situations go, it’s neither the best- nor worst-case scenario.

This is her way of saying she’ll accept his decision as his publisher. Jin-soo asks for her opinion from a different perspective — meaning, not as his publisher but as a person. She says matter-of-factly, “I told you earlier, the person Lee Jin-soo is a lost cause.” And hangs up.

Spurred by Grandpa’s request (and maybe some of his own personal motivations), Jin-soo gives Seung-yeon an assignment — to write her very first synopsis for a story. Her task is to work out possible ways to get rid of Ji-won from Eun-young’s life for good.

Seung-yeon is taken by surprise, since writing scenarios is hardly something she’s good at, but Jin-soo insists that he’s giving her the opportunity to develop her skills. Even Seung-yeon is smart enough to know that that’s a crock of bull, and retorts that the only reason he’s telling her to do it is because he doesn’t know the answer himself.

He gives her an hour, after which she comes up with the idea to set Ji-won up with a new love interest. But she hasn’t thought out the particulars, and Jin-soo ruthlessly pokes holes into her idea — who? Where would they find her? What would she be like? How would they find someone even more impressive than Eun-young herself?

As he points out each flaw, Seung-yeon’s half of the split screen starts slowly shrinking, to match her falling spirits. Jin-soo sends her back for another pass, and this time she takes more care, interviewing Hyun-joo to ask about Ji-won’s past relationships. Eventually she ditches that idea and tries out a couple new theories.

The first involves a fortune-teller she knows, who can be persuaded to read Eun-young and Ji-won’s couple fortunes and declare them a disastrous match. This is such an obvious line of thinking that Jin-soo declares it completely lame. As he again criticizes her lack of imagination, her split-screen box starts shrinking again. Aw.

She retorts that HE ought to give it a try, to which he replies that this is HER homework — he’s purposely not giving her the answer just so she can practice. Seung-yeon calls him out for the lame excuse, pointing out that he’s foisting this off on her because he doesn’t have a better solution, and this time his box starts to shrink. Haha! (I love the shrinking screen motif, because it’s so simple and yet says so much.)

Her last idea is to get someone to act as Eun-young’s new boyfriend. Jin-soo starts to ask about the particulars, ready to shoot them down: What would it entail? Who would be the boyfriend? By now she’s lost confidence in all her ideas and blurts that he should be the one to play the boyfriend.

She points out that it would be believable, and if Ji-won saw it with his own eyes, he’d have to accept it. Jin-soo asks what would serve as “proof” of the romance, and she mumbles, “Stuff that dating people do.” He asks if this would require “a bed scene,” to which she nervously says no.

Jin-soo sends her back for more thinking, and Seung-yeon brainstorms various scenarios, like getting them drunk and “proving the romance” with a grand public display of affection.

Eun-young sees her name scribbled all over Seung-yeon’s notebook and peers over curiously. Seung-yeon tries to cover it up and explain that this is just an exercise — absolutely imaginary, with no intention of real-life implementation! — while Eun-young ponders why Jin-soo would make her the subject of study.

Reading over the list, Eun-young muses that No. 1 (setting Ji-won up with a new woman) is something she’d have done ages ago if it were possible. On to No. 2 — but that won’t be convincing because their parents already had them go to a fortune-teller when they were engaged, and the forecast was positive.

Now for No. 3 — having Jin-soo pose as her boyfriend. Seung-yeon hurriedly explains that it was just a stupid idea, but Eun-young looks at her with interested eyes: “Now this, I like,” she declares. It has a high possibility of working — how can they work with this?

Eun-young dives into the scenario, thinking of a way to engineer a scenario that is so natural that Ji-won would fall for it. Uneasily, Seung-yeon is forced to sit with her as Eun-young lays out the details: Ji-won has a habit of looking in on her office from his window, so they’ll set this scene in her office. She also figures that a kiss scene is necessary — using a kiss that is convincing even from a distance.

Even more unsettling to Seung-yeon is Eun-young’s decision to keep it secret from Jin-soo, because he wouldn’t cooperate if he knew. Eun-young makes her pinky-swear to it, then praises her for her idea. Afterward, Seung-yeon looks at her promise-pinky in dismay, as though thinking, “Oh, what have I gotten myself into?”

That evening, Seung-yeon waits nervously for the hour of doom, aka 8pm, when Eun-young will put her plan into motion. Jin-soo gets the call requesting his presence in her office, and Seung-yeon bites her tongue anxiously, wanting to warn him but afraid to ruin the plan. (I can see her hesitation, because this is another exercise in loyalty. In an earlier episode, she had decided to stick with Jin-soo no matter what, but the last time they did that we sorta came to the conclusion that Jin-soo’s escape from the interview was childish and caused more damage than it solved.)

Good thing for her she realizes that this time she doesn’t have to go either to Eun-young or Jin-soo, because there’s a Door No. 3. She races next door to Ji-won’s office, intending to stop him from seeing anything.

Eun-young greets Jin-soo with a suspiciously bright smile and a glass of wine. He immediately knows that something is up, although he can’t pinpoint what she’s planning. At first she enjoys leaving him in the dark while she toys with his hair and touches his face, before she tells him through clenched teeth that Ji-won’s watching.

She also calls him out for dismissing Seung-yeon’s idea, because she thinks it’s a great plan — it’s the most realistic and has the highest probability for success. He was just letting his personal distaste for playing the boyfriend color his opinion of the idea itself.

Seung-yeon races into Ji-won’s office, ready to distract him from the scene at the window, but as it happens she’s too late. He is already looking over in shock while Eun-young moves even closer and starts to slowly unbutton Jin-soo’s shirt.

While keeping up the appearance of being locked in a romantic moment, Eun-young tells Jin-soo that she worked out this scenario with Seung-yeon, and they planned out the script for the evening. He asks nervously how far she’s going to go — “You want to keep going? How far?”

All this time, Jin-soo has been a little nervous and uncertain, but at her confirmation that there will be a kiss scene involved, his mouth quirks up in a self-assured smile and he challenges her to show him what she’s got. Eun-young moves in, pushes him back onto her desk, and leans over him.

I love the spectators’ response to this — they both recoil in shock, and Ji-won finally notices that Seung-yeon is in his office. He asks what she’s doing here, but she’s so stunned that she just presses her face to the window dumbly. Ji-won does the same. (Seung-yeon knows that Eun-young is faking this, but she assumes that Jin-soo is unaware of her motives and is reacting accordingly.)

There’s a hilarious pause while Eun-young is leaning over Jin-soo’s torso, practically on top of him, and he tells her to go on. She mutters, “You want me to do it? I pushed you, so you should do it [kiss].” Jin-soo: “What are you talking about?”

This pause has the effect of killing the mood — not that the mood was romantic, per se, but it has been charged with tension as they both waited to see what the other would do. Eun-young’s expression had gone from teasing to questioning, and at his terse response she now becomes serious.

With some anger creeping in, Eun-young tells Jin-soo not to mess around with her life: “You do all these things that I don’t ask for, and then you don’t do what I do ask for. I’m not thankful at all. If you have even a little thought for me, you’d do what I wanted you to. Don’t keep doing things I don’t ask you to do. When did I ever ask you to help me?”

Ooh, banjun. I love when scenes suddenly turn on their heads, and that’s what happens here. The comic uncertainty and jokey tension dissipates entirely, and Jin-soo asks, “So what is it you want from me? A convincing, magnificent kiss?” Their exchange is loaded with meaning — not about the words at all but in the way they say them.

Eun-young (Duh, exactly): “Yeah.”
Jin-soo (challenging): “Yeah?”
Eun-young (matter-of-fact): “Yeah.”
Jin-soo (very interested) “Yeah…”

However, Eun-young’s confidence seems to falter, and her gaze wavers uncertainly, like she’s about to back down and give up on her crazy scheme. Which is when Jin-soo decides, “Then let’s do it my way. I don’t like this way.”

Ji-won and Seung-yeon watch in horror and disbelief as Jin-soo leaps up and clears off all the papers from her desk. Moving with decisive assertiveness, Jin-soo flips around their stances, lowering Eun-young onto the tabletop and leaning down over her, one of her legs bent and raised up by his waist.

Then, Jin-soo gets up to face the window, where he looks tauntingly at Ji-won. He reaches toward his waistline… and pulls out his belt… and pulls the blinds shut. HAHAHAHA.

As soon as he pulls the blinds closed, he’s back to his old self. Putting his belt back on, he points out that it’s more powerful to leave them to their imaginations. Eun-young, however, is just as shocked by his sudden romantic fake-out and takes some moments to recover from its effects.

Ji-won and Seung-yeon are both so stricken by the events that they stagger from the window in a daze.

Jin-soo suggests heading out for something to eat. Eun-young, now recovering her composure, tells him that he’s right and wise — he’s more logical than her. “I understand,” she tells him. She’s referring to his tactic, but it also mirrors her perception of their emotional paths as well — he puts on a good show and comes out of it totally unmoved, while she can’t be that detached.

Jin-soo points out that no matter how worked up she gets over something, she’s always able to return to her original state. Eun-young forces a smile and agrees — that’s her, all right. Coolly, she turns down his dinner invitation, and he heads back to his office.

Once he’s gone, though, Eun-young lies back down on her desk, still feeling all that pent-up anticipation.

When Jin-soo gets back to the office, he tsks-tsks over the silly plan Seung-yeon had worked out with Eun-young. Seung-yeon realizes that this means he was aware that the whole thing was faked, which means that his part was also just as faked. (Her shock came from thinking that Eun-young had made an advance as an act, which he reciprocated in reality.) This is a thought that vastly relieves her — until she recalls with frustration that she shouldn’t feel relieved about that, as he is her boss and et cetera.

A few nights later, Seung-yeon is working at her family’s coffee shop when Dong-wook comes by. He’s happy to see her through the window, but his path is blocked by her curious family, and he has to endure a brief interrogation before he can head inside, answering questions about his family situation. Grandma likes him, although Dad has a few reservations. (Grandma points out that his reservations are unfounded, since Dong-wook is no worse off than Dad himself.)

I wonder if it’s worth noting that Dong-wook appears to be getting sloppier (outside of work) while Eun-young continues to get sharper — her hair is smooth and straight, and her dressing style is becoming more put-together.

Seung-yeon hasn’t been to the office in three days, because Jin-soo had been busy writing and told her not to come until he called. Dong-wook perks up, as this means she has lots of free time, and just as he starts to ask her to a movie, she gets a phone call that cuts him off.

Seung-yeon answers eagerly, hoping it’s Jin-soo calling her back to work, but it turns out to be Hyun-joo. The publishing office is cluttered with birthday presents, and they were hoping she would take them up to Jin-soo’s place. Seung-yeon had been under the mistaken belief that Jin-soo’s “real” birthday was months later and that this was only his “profile birthday.” Of course, it turns out that Jin-soo had lied — she’d been going on and on about throwing him a party, so he picked a different date to shut her up.

Dong-wook tries to ask Eun-young out again, but now she’s distracted by this news, and barely hears him. She decides that the day isn’t over yet, so there’s still time to plan some birthday events. I love that her reasoning isn’t (only) to celebrate his birthday, but to get back at him for lying to her in the first place. Hee. She’s learning!

At the store, she picks up an array of party supplies, choosing items that will most annoy Jin-soo, and heads over with her items of torture. However, Jin-soo looks out the window to see her walking up bearing her festive atrocities, and decides to sneak out before she gets there. He drops by a local convenience store to pick up some snacks, then makes a phone call.

Seung-yeon now has an apartment key so she lets herself in and starts to decorate. When she answers the phone, it’s Jin-soo demanding that she remove every little balloon and party favor immediately. If there’s anything left when he gets back, he’ll fire her. She protests (and despite her desire for a little “revenge,” she really does mean the best), but she senses he means it and glumly starts to collect the decorations.

Jin-soo steps out of the phone booth just as a sudden downpour starts. Without an umbrella and with no particular place to be, he retreats back into the glass booth and pops a beer. Happy birthday to me.

A knock on the glass draws his attention — it’s Eun-young, standing just outside.

She is on her way in, having had a few drinks herself, in celebration of signing a new contract. She tells him to come with her, since she’s got an umbrella, so Jin-soo grabs his plastic bag and starts to leave, but the contents spill out and beer cans fall to the ground.

He kneels to pick them up, while she comments on the oddity of him drinking alone in a phone booth on his birthday, especially considering that he’s a star author with crowds of fans. He thought she’d forgotten his birthday, to which she responds that since he’d prefer that she forget, she has to act the part to oblige him.

Jin-soo likes that about her, in contrast to his dense secretary who insisted on going out to prepare him a birthday party. Eun-young points out that Seung-yeon’s the normal one — it’s Jin-soo who’s abnormal. Eun-young adds that in going out of her way to suit him, that has turned her into another abnormal one: “I can’t buy a present for a friend on his birthday, or tell him congratulations.”

Jin-soo replies that he doesn’t need words of congratulations, “But a present is good. Just give me a present.” He’s happy with that, just as long as it doesn’t come with a birthday card.

At that, Eun-young’s gaze changes — she stares at him more intently as he continues to chat. Then, without warning, she drops her umbrella, steps inside the phone booth, and moves in for a kiss.

COMMENTS

I have gotten questions about a Coffee House novel, which appears to be a different case from Coffee Prince or Personal Taste, where the drama was adapted from a previously published book. It looks like the Coffee House novel — or I’d call it novelization — was published after the drama began to air, and one of the writers is the same writer of the drama. Based on a few reader reviews, the characters are the same but the storyline is a little different. So I wouldn’t go around worrying about what happens in the book version.

However, if you are curious, here are the chapter titles. (Highlight to read; I’m keeping them hidden for those who wish to avoid the spoilers.)

CHAPTERS

1. Meeting at Palace Coffee
2. My enemy, my treasure
3. Love’s emergency landing
4. I’ll become a pro secretary!
5. The Jang Dong-gun and Go So-young of the publishing world
6. Dreams can’t come true
7. 척하면 착!
(This is the thing that Jin-soo tells Seung-yeon, and I don’t have a good direct translation for it. It basically means that if he gives the signal, she should know what to do immediately.)
8. This is Jeju Island
9. Things that change, things that don’t change
10. Ten-year friendship
11. Goodbye, Palace Coffee
Epilogue

END CHAPTERS

It’s funny how I’ve never warmed to Park Shi-yeon before, and suddenly love her. Even after she improved mightily in La Dolce Vita and Story of a Man (as well as several movie projects), she was no longer bad but I still didn’t connect with her. But I find her absolutely endearing, adorable, and winning in Coffee House, and I love her chemistry with Kang Ji-hwan. She banters, teases, taunts, holds herself confidently, and even manages to show glimpses of uncertainty and vulnerability, all with a natural charm.

It’s partly that she’s improved, but also that this role really shows her off to her best advantage. I wonder if she’s one of those actresses whose perceived image and persona are quite different from her real personality, and therefore when she acts in roles that require her to be haughty or glamorous (which is how most people see her), it doesn’t work as well because there’s a disconnect in the acting. But I love her as this character.

As for the chemistry? Off the charts. How hot was that last kiss, huh? But not only that, I particularly dug the fake-out scene, because there were a lot of different layers operating there. There’s the outward “show” to convince Ji-won that they’re romantically involved, and their facade with each other that this is all just a ploy, and that they’re cool and unperturbed by the act. Then there’s a tinge of hope (for instance, in the way Eun-young looks to him when she wants him to kiss her), and then the flash of contained disappointment (when he doesn’t kiss her). I didn’t think this pair would be so well-matched at the beginning of the drama, but I’m a big fan now. And if THIS episode didn’t convince you… well, then, I guess nothing ever will?

(EY have a secret that she can tell to anyone. The secret is seem to be the love she have for JS and she seem to understand herself now about she was in love with JS. EY seem to be ok with her knowing about her feeling so if JS run away from her, she ok with. EY know JS isn't a easy to catch. JS seem to far for her to be with. EY be happy and grateful about JS feeling for her. It's like a dream where she can be with JS and she got his feeling. She thank to him about that. EY know she wasn't a valuable person, important person [I was not worthy and could not hold on]. I don't know if she mean she wasn't a respected person so that why she can keep JS love to her. Or it's because, she thinking she wasn't someone important but JS give to her his love. JS do love EY but this love is heavy to her to support. She love him and also JS love her but the things in the past keep block the love between them. To heavy to live with...But because she have his love to her, she can keep to live even she was in a difficult situation, she have to think she have JS love so she can live. EY will live with JS even her tear flowing and she ''breaking'' herself ..she will stay with JS because if JS know about it, her relation with him will break and can't be together ever. She was loved by JS and she love him back. It's seem to be JS love her back..but now he change. EY will not hate JS because she grateful. JS is someone she can't despise and someone who have everything [mean social ?]. JS wasn't for her in the begining. She wasn't able to have him start in the begining. EY is sad about it but she let him go even her tear can't stop. EY going keep watching him even he is far from her. She going keep the beautiful memories they have together.....
EY have a old friend who is JS who is really a picky person and for coffee also. EY thought she was the only one who understand him the most. Because she know his way and hobby. But she was wrong. because it's seem someone else start to understand him a same like her ...)

@bluebird, 135

Thanks for the answers.

2) it was just weird cause the camera was in front of his face so I couldn't make out his lips moving during the first part. But good to know.

3)And thanks for the explanation for "combi" I was wondering if it was a common usage term on not.

Also, I need to brush up on my French.

Thank you for the wonderful recap (as always) Javabeans. I think your incisive and keen analysis in your summaries help to bring out the incisive and keen comments from your loyal readers.

I won't lie, I find the storyline between JS/EY much more compelling -- it is sexy without being contrived, vulnerable without being needlessly angsty (hopefully this holds out in future episodes). The actors do a really good job of having the sexual tension as a foundation for almost all of their interactions, the giant elephant in the room that neither party wanted to acknowledge until recently. I think it is about maturity with which these feelings have come into physical fruition (ie. the lingering glances, the pensive undertone to the joking, the Kiss, THE KISS) that makes my heart leap foward like it does.

And While SY and JS have a great working relationship/budding friendship; it does not have the charm of the banter and the love games that only two adults equal with each other can play.

@ maria,

where is the metro? actually, what is the metro? my friend just introduced me to livemocha.com. one can learn foreign languages for free but only to an extent; more advanced levels require payment. i tried it out and started with french again. i also tried korean a bit, but it was hard to follow the characters. the pronunciation's not as easy as it sounds.

@ xylophonic

excellent observations of the viikii members who overindulge in being nasty. the discussion off button is a blessing!

@ miaki-chan

i have never seen the animated version of anne of green gables. i've only seen the live action miniseries with the late colleen dewhurst.

oh, i have another question. completely off-topic: have you ever watched being erica? it's a canadian show. one of the best shows i've ever had the pleasure of viewing.

@lavender peel : I'm feeling the same way too.
@choufy:
Love your observasion and interpretation regarding the tanggo steps between Eun Young and Jin Soo. And I also love your comment about them being in their protected zones (with Jin Soo in the more heavily guarded one).
I'm not sure whether it has been choreograph that way on purpose or is it just us with our unbridle wild imagination. Anyway, the end resuls are awesome! No dispute about that.
The problem is what's next?
Even the fools and the blinds can see and sense that the kiss has effected both of them in a major way. Especially Jin Soo who's been hiding for years inside his protected castle. Ahh...the sight of his slightly open mouth and the way he slowly open his eyes in wonder are priceless! It's like the Princess has come to awaken the sleeping handsome Prince from his deep sleep.

We can see in the previous episodes that Jin Soo has always been aware of and in tune with Eun Young and likewise. But I guess both of them have taken that rare and precious awareness for granted. Jin Soo is probably convincing himself that Eun Young keeps him on his toes because she's constantly hatching schemes not to his liking.

I'm dying to know what will he do? What will he say? How will they react to that revealing kiss? The most likely couse is that they will play it cool. It's not a big deal.

I don't think they could resolve their issues on their own. SY, JW and DW are crucial in turning their relationship around. And SY will be the to tell us of their love story (of how two people who's been in love for years finally able to openly and honestly relay their love for each other without other pretext)

.

I'll be blunt-- I only ever watch dramas for the sake of cutesy romance (hehe) so to say that I'd be super happy with an SY/JS ending would be a flaming lie. :( Because I'm totally an EY/JS shipper :D I guess I really love the latter pair so much because their relationship is a mix of all things! There's comedy, love (whether it be platonic or romantic,) hate, friendship and angst. It all blends perfectly together and no aspect overshadows the other. Their relationship is just very... 3-dimensional, I guess. The relationship is realistic and easily relatable (to me at the very least,) which is something you don't see very often in dramas.

But since this is a DRAMA we're talking about, anything can happen. We're only half way through the series, after all.

My only real concern, I guess, is that if an SY/JS ending does occur, then I hope it should happen in a believable, well written way. At this point, if JS suddenly realized his dormant feelings for SY and became a huge confused puddle of sap, I would definitely stop watching CH because I can only foresee that as being written horribly ha. But, if it's a gradual thing and we see him battle with an array of emotions and, like I said, if it's written cleanly, I'd be more content and accepting of SY/JS. And then, I'd still be left to think that CH was/is a great series!

@javabeans, thanks for the recap! I like reading your play-by-plays because they always give me more insight on scenes that I'm unsure of.

@pipit

yeah they can't end the tension this early. they're going to play it cool. OR the writer could want to fight the once-the-chase-is-over-it's-boring chain. i love their sexy banter so i'm not sure what i'd want. if they do downplay the kiss... some ways to play it off cooly
EY tells JS that's how he should have done it when JW was watching
EY tells him it's a present he should appreciate
SY comes or calls
someone comes over
EY walks/runs away in the rain and pretends nothing happened (doubt it though because she's been frustrated that he brushes things off)

@ m a r a -- I do root for Seung-yeon. I LOVE HER. But my rooting for her has nothing to do with ships. She could end up alone for all I care (I'd actually prefer that because Jin-soo is a nutter -- he's sexeh, but he's nutteh -- and she's not too interested in Dong-wook right now). What can I say? I just adore the girl.

To be quite honest, I heart both female leads. In fact, I personally identify with Eun-young; I think we're pretty similar except for the fact that Eun-young is prettier, richer, more successful and has better legs. :D . But in terms of having a career, being an independent woman and all that jazz, I completely identify with Eun-young. She also has that vulnerability, along with an undertone of self-doubt that I find relatable. It's humanizing. I was more like Eun-young even when I was younger than Seung-yeon, so I think Eun-young is the ish. And she's a polyglot to boot, just like Miaka-chan, Javabeans and many other readers here! She could totally hang with us! Eun-young. Is. FABULOUS!

That being said, I find Seung-yeon to be precious. In terms of emotional stability and self-confidence, I think she's even further along than Eun-young (to the point of obliviousness sometimes), although professionally she's miles and years behind. If we take male-female relationships out of the equation for just a second, I find her trajectory more engrossing because her storyline lets me relive the journey of a girl coming into her own as a woman. She's already changing from the directionless ingénue we first encountered. She's more assertive and more responsible. She's starting to give as good as she gets with Jin-soo. She can argue him down until his split-screen square gets all tiny (snerk!). She makes him stay in Seoul when he wants to escape to an island. She calls him out on his inappropriate behavior and he listens. She's earning Eun-young's respect and Dong-wook's affection. Javabeans also noted that she's becoming more polished in her appearance...I'm liking her storyline. Viewers have speculated that she might end up being a writer, and that maybe what we're seeing is a narration of her novel. I hope that by the end of the drama, she's such a pro that Jin-soo begs her to stay -- begs like a biatch -- and that she and her family run the second-best coffee shop in Seoul (Eun-young's would be first because she's Fabulous). Maybe Eun-young will give her a contract as a writer and they'll be BFFs! That would be awesome. Anyway, as m a r a said, I hope to see a fully self-actualized Seung-yeon, and I'm enjoying watching her transformation. When it comes to Seung-yeon's story, that's enough for me. If it turns out that she's also snags herself a sweet piece of hottie along the way, kewl!

That's not to say I'm not interested in the pairings. I am indeed interested. This is a Kdrama after all, so if I weren't interested in romance, I wouldn't be watching. I'm really curious about how ALL of the characters are going to end up romance-wise. It's just that this drama has done such a good job of making the characters complex, multifaceted and interesting for me, so I find myself eager to learn more about their personal stories as well, not just about who is ending up with whom. The writers have dropped nuggets of character back-story all over the place. Eun-young and Jin-soo's ex-wife were best friends. We know that some really bad stuff went down but what happened exactly? What part does it play in his dysfunctional relationship with Eun-young? Why is Jin-soo so stunted emotionally? Seung-yeon and Dong-wook have each lost a parent, and it seems like they're both the anchors in their family. That has GOT to be exhausting (I mean, really, Seung-yeon's family is so out-of-this-world that it's ridiculous). To lose a parent as a child/young adult and then find the adult role foisted on you; that takes a toll on a person. How did Seung-yeon go an entire year without grieving or crying over her mother's death? That is not normal. Our first impression of Ji-won is that he's just an, entitled a-hole (true), but then the next thing we see, he's a broken man, crying so dejectedly over the fact that Eun-young cut him out of her memories. There's a bit more to this than him just being a cheating bastard (which he is). What is going on? I want to know!

I am really enjoying watching the love-lines progress. Truly, I am. Still, in a Kdrama, there will always be a romance storyline. That's a given. But will there always be this kind of nuanced writing? This fluid story-telling? No, this is rare. Besides, so many other posters are doing such an amazing job of providing romantic insight into all of the little moments that occur, even the seemingly innocuous ones, that all I can do is be impressed. So I'm willing to focus my energies on the characters' personal and interpersonal journeys for now. When it comes to the romance aspect, I'm just going to relax and take it as it comes. The writers and characters are pulling me in, slowly but surely, one gorgeous kiss at a time.

Random: I love this wink emoticon. ;) Now if someone can tell me how to do an Eun-young wink face (a wink with the tongue sticking out), that would be spectacular.

I spent the last two hour or so reading all the comments, and I am AMAZED all over again by the intelligence and the depth of perception of the people here. Thank you Javabeans for creating such an environment!

@ choufy
Wow! really good call on noticing the dancing motif. How closely you must have watched in order to see that tiny picture on his shirt! Once you pointed it out, it really made sense in context of the EY/JS relationship.

Personally, I am incredibly conflicted about the pairing as of last episode. Both women are so endearing and adorable. And the chemistry between EY/JS is so convincing.
At this point I am enjoying the show so much that it really doesn't matter who ends up with who. But I started off on the SY/ JS camp and I would like to see their relationship come to fruition.
Miaka- chan Help! Convince me that there is yet some hope left. :P

@miaka chan
*standing ovation* I am impressed by the length and depth of your analysis. Also, thank you for translating the song. I was looking for the meaning for a while. Can you please also translate SY's song and what she says before the song begins? I would really appreciate it.

p.s. Do you think we are like the musicians on the Titanic, valiantly playing on while our ship sinks? Because the thermal level of that kiss between EY/ JS was of nuclear intensity! :P

@ lahlita

excellent points, as usual :) i can't really argue any of them because you've covered everything, and they are, after all, your views.

i do genuinely like both girls equally, and i can identify with both of them in different ways. i won't go in depth as you (i'm just feeling lazy ... haha) ... while seungyeon is a few years younger than i, i still find myself a bit naive and cookie at times. and someday i'd like to achieve the kind of success that eungyeon has. they're loyal, strong-willed, and they definitely stand up for their convictions; i'd like to think i possess those same qualities as well. i only wish i embodied the confidence either woman has.

@ Viola
Oh big thank for the ovation ^^! Convince ? euh...if you convince after read my analyses that nice ^^ but also read from other people in soompi. They are really also good!! ^^

About choufy-chan analyses !! excellent ^^ I didn't see that at all because i'm still analyses episode 1 by second LOL. I don't want missing something so take slowing time, we have until June 28 to analyses ^^

About SY Mv ...oh i did analyses already in soompi just didn't post here ...oh well ..then ^^ enjoy it.

SY Mv - PAGE ONE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boYsMxs80RY

Page One SY MV

What am I to do when I think of you again? My heart only yearns for one
What am I to do? Even though I am afraid of love, when I face you I will smile
The person who makes my heart flutters
The hidden feelings in my heart
Seem to have come to light
I love you, please love me
I can't go on even just one day without you
Even though I am not your first love
I am already very blessed
Can you see my love? Can you hear the beating sound of my heart?
Perhaps from the start, it could be the love for you that had began
The person who make me dream
I want to give all that I have
Can you see my love? Can you hear the beating sound of my heart?
Perhaps from the start, it could be the love for you that had began
I will wait even though it hurts
No matter when, no matter what form
I will be strong
As long I can see you it's sufficient
Can you see my love? Can you hear the beating sound of my heart?
You are my first love and my last love...please love me

So the analyses is
(I think it's when SY going take some distance from JS and thinking about him again. She want to see him and also not far from him. SY afraid to tell him her feeling and also she hiding with her smile to him. Like that, he can't figure out her feeling. JS did make her heartbeat going fast to hurt herself but she need to hide. But her hiding feeling cannot be in the dark and it's start to coming out slowly and surely. SY want to shout to JS about SHE LOVE HIM and please look at me, i'm here to waiting your love back. SY cannot contain anymore soon her feeling, she need his respond to her. She need him and cannot survive without him. SY know about his feeling for EY. She know EY was his first love so she hiding her feeling to hurt herself. SY want demonstrate her feeling, her love to him. Maybe in the beginning the story, it's could be a first love in a first sign from SY to JS. JS give her a strenght to go to her dream, to become a person who can work in society. JS was the person who keep her to work for her dream. So that why SY do everything what JS ask her to do. She give to him her everything. When JS ask something to do, she do everythinh he ask. But after see the EY/JS relation begin, she can't express her feeling so she wait. SY will wait until JS decide himself. It's hurt, really hurt but she will wait JS back to her. The time cannot stop her, the evenement cannot block her. She will be strong...Strong for the future...Strong for the future of JS and herself. For now, SY feel suffficient to only see him. SY can see JS ..she will be happy for now. JS...can you understand my true feeling, can you understand my heartbeat...who hurt me so much...it's incontrolable. JS you are my first 'real'' love and also MY LAST LOVE EVER)

That my analyse ...^^

The thing is they make another MV for Seung Yeon

Oh man I am SO not a kdrama expert, by all means. I grew up away from my Korean culture, living in Canada, and my parents only exposed me to light, airy shows they thought I would like, ie. the conventional trendy kdrama. I am by far, not claiming to have any definition on what a cliche is or is not. I was expressing instead that the JS/SY relationship felt much more cliched to ME, and I thought that maybe JS/EY was perhaps more nuanced and complex than most other 'longtime friends' couples we see around. Of course, this is all based on my own personal viewing experience, which is at best sadly minimal. xD

you know on the who he ends up with, the entire show so far has been using the classic cliques of romance/comedy building them up..then kicking your feet out from under you at the last minute, leaving you with the WTF feeling..but with a lot of laughs. Right now they been building up one couple, using the best friend we can not be lovers theme..now they seem to be getting it on together..you have to hold your breath and keep an eye out for the blow they going to knock it all on the head and leave you gasping....just an idea

@ m a r a

you welcome ! ^^

I relied on SY more at the end of episode 6 because I got the feeling that she was growing as a professional. You go girl !

About JS & DW
No you're wrong, because DW is MINE. LOL My sweetie-not-mute-death-glare-mixed-with-puppy-eyes DW *cuddle*.

And don't you see all the anger and frustration between JS & JW ?

JS tricking JW because he's jealous of EY and wants JW attention, the boxing fight when JS avoided to hit JW and hurt him, the drunk scene when JW finally

hugged JS AND this magical dialogue in episode 8 when JW is running away from EY's grandpa :

JW : Watch where you're going !

JS : We were in each other arms yesterday and now you're all hostile again. Tell me how I can accept you ?

JW : What ? Who embraced who ?

JS : Don't you remember ?

JW : What do you mean ? I actually planned to give you a lesson. But I'll see you later.

:)

@ Miaka-chan

Hello, glad to meet you here lol

What is a fic actually ?

@ pipit

Flattered that you enjoyed my analogies *blush*

Knowing the Directing & Screenwriter jobs I would say that visual aspects are rarely a coincidence.

It migh sounds weird but I really don't care about what's coming next lol I really trust the PD and Screewriter with this aspect.

But my piece of mind about EY and JS relationship : it is officially a WORK one. But as time goes by we see that they use work as an excuse/way/device to deal with their PERSONAL life. HENCE the total mess.
This fake work relationship has to STOP because it is litterally insane (as it is not healthy for both of them). They need to have a clean break, kill it, dig it and may it rest in peace. Then after a while (even years I don't care) a more honest relationship might blossom between them.

I like dancing so surely it helped lol Once I'm hooked by emotions I enjoy digging how - beyond the great actors's job - a scene is composed and choregraphed. I'm glad if you enjoyed it ^^.

This one was a coincidence actually. I wouldn't notice if I wasn't recapping the EY & JS act scene in Soompi. At some point, I stopped the video to write the dialogue. And when my eyes came bakc to the video the frame showed the couple of dancers sewed on JS's shirt LOL So the rest was pretty easy to figure it out :)

Coucou

so, you're a JS & JW shipper, eh? ugh. no freaking way! why JS & DW are so much better. like, duh, DW is so much prettier than JW! hulloh! hahaha :P

and if DW has another secret love, it is me, my dear. ;) he's quiet all the time because i leave the guy speechless with mah beauty, okay. pwahaha.

@ miaki-chan

hon, i strongly suggest you watch being erica. because it's a canadian show, i don't think it's getting a well-deserved buzz here in the US and other parts of the world. in some ways, it reminds me of a korean drama, except that this is an ongoing series. it has a unique concept: the girl time travels (as a form of therapy) to help her learn from her past regrets and uses what she learned to resolve issues in her present life. when you first here the idea, the time travel angle can throw you for a spin---basically makes one doubtful to give the show a chance. however, it's a great dramedy and very relatable. the female lead is successful, ambitious and has very strong convictions. yet, she has her insecurities, has moments of naivete and clumsiness, and sometimes, she simply can't help but complicate things in her present life even after learning from her past. she's only human. if ever you become interested in watching it, i think tudou has all the episodes from all seasons. that's how i got all caught up.

btw, thanks for the anne of green gables link (to the anime). i'll check it out. and wow, those are a lot of episodes. :)

If Eun Young could sing this is the song I'd like her to sing:

Love o love
Why didn't I know it
Should have realised it
That it's love all along

Love o love
Would've done anything for you
Would've given the world if you want it too
There's no limit to what I would do for you

Love o love
Don't be afraid don't be sad
I'll always be by your side
Through the good and the bad

Love o love
Don't you know your pains are mine
And you weaknesses have become my strength
Because you're mine

Love o love
Cast your fears aside
Embrace love by your side
Together we shall ride

Love o love
After all this time
You should understand
That it's love all along

@62, Lahita.

Wow, you said it so well. I love both of the female characters. I feel for EY. My heart goes out to her so much. And PSY is so great to watch.

And I love SY. And you explained the reasons why SY is such a likable character. I don't think they are going about her the same way they go about some of the other female leads in her category. 25 year old females whom we see starting to go up on their way or whatever.

Unlike other characters where we sort of see plot used to make us relate to them, I think both SY and EY are being relatable through characterization. That's kind of rare especially for all the similar SY characters.

@mara I'll have to check out the show whenever I have time. Sounds like my type of show.

This is such a great show. Is there any character that we dislike? Jiwon is not even some "love to hate" character. He's just... Jiwon.

I'm so attached to this drama it's a little ridiculous =( I am patiently awaiting Monday, and after monday, I wait impatiently for tuesday.
I really, REALLY thought JS was gonna end up with SY because of the "couple" posters released prior to the drama's airing, and I approached the first few episodes with a pretty closed mind, thinking it would follow the regular cliches (which i was pretty at ease with). NOT ANYMORE! Coffee House has totally chucked all my preconceived ideas out the friggin window! And I'm thankful for it =) Now it's just one crazy, hilarious, unpredictable roller coaster ride!!!!

@ firsttimenewbie,

oh please do. it really is a very good show. if you like layers to a story and good character development, "being erica" has them. i forgot to add that in many ways, the show conveys taking chances/risks, even if it could mean creating issues (good or bad), which ultimately are necessary for growth. the theme song's also pretty cool. it's by lily frost, but the sound is rather un-lily-frost-like. :) i've been scrounging for a decent trailer but no luck.

@ akem

coolbies. i can go for a shawn of the dead theme by the 2nd half of the show. ;) yeah, i don't think JW and EY should ever get back together. the guy may not be half bad, but he still cheated, and to me, that's pretty darn hard to forgive. it's also little troubling how self-absorbed he is. needless to say, he's still a fun character. i'm enjoying that not one is a clear cut villain. i don't really like hating a character or loving hating a character.

sorry, i forgot to add something ...

i just watched the movie "the good guy" with the gorgeous alexis bledel and hottie bryan greenberg. it's a mediocre film, but i like it enough. getting back to the point ... it uses a storytelling device of the the unreliable narrator. what if this is the case with Coffee House? typically, when we read a book or watch a film, we put our complete trust in the narrator. we trust that what he/she is telling us (including implications) is the way things did/do happen; however, they aren't---not completely. that is to say, the narration has set us up to be misled.

if any of you intend to watch "the good guy," i'm sorry because i'll be spoiling the story for you. but i have to describe it to some length for the purpose of comparing it to Coffee House.

in the beginning of "the good guy," the male lead narrates, but it's only in the beginning. the audience watches the story unravel, and so far, the male lead still is as he seems, and all is well between him and the lead girl. halfway through the story, however, we realize he's omitted certain truths, mainly about himself. his only other narration comes up near at the very end of the film, wherein he more or less admits of his unreliability, so to speak. the lead girl eventually ends up with the 2nd male lead.

anyway, i'm not saying that what we've seen in Coffee House so far has been deceiving us all along. i'm just thinking that because SY started out as the narrator, we bought into the implications of her role in the show. we assume she is the only female lead and the love interest for the male lead. those assumptions are anted up when she narrates that in all the comic books she likes, the successful male lead, escaping a routine life, unexpectedly meets the poor, female character (this way). SY's narration drops from that moment, and we are left to follow the unfolding story. now, whether or not we're still seeing it from her point of view would be a big guess. as the story progresses, are we still to rely on our initial impressions about SY's role? it's just something to think about. of course, we could still be right about our initial assumptions: she might still end up with JS. however, it still could be a pendulum swinging between ships. again, just something on which to ponder. i do wonder if she'll continue her narration in the final episode???

Hi Mara,
Actually I'm not that keen on discussing this particular aspect of CH. Because I think this is the key/clue to getting the final answer.
Yeah, I'm talking about the pairing. Let's be honest the most exciting thing in CH is that it manages to keep us in a hopeful suspense with refreshing, entertaing and engaging storyline.
As much as we want to know the answer, once we know for sure I'm afraid CH will loose its charms.

But since you bring this up, let's talk about the way this story being told. This particular style is very deceiving. The audiences/viewers will automatically identify with the narrator. They just can't help it. In this case, they attach themselves to lovable SY. And as they're watching KDrama, they naturally assume that she'll be romantically involved with her love interest. Pairing Jin Soo and SY has been designed to get their approval from the beginning. Despite the rumours about that book, I think the fact that SY is doing the narration should make all those viewers cautious.

And seeing the development in the story, I think it's safe enough to conclude that Jin Soo and Eun Young 'friendship/relationship' was never just that. Not before and certainly not now. They may try to deceive themselves, but not us. Those sizzling chemistr and sexy dance are not the thing we could see in daily Kdrama.

My very cautious opinion Jin Soo and Eun Young would finally be together. Why? 1) That kiss clearly and finally reveal Jin Soo's hidden feelings for Eun Young; 2) It would never occur to the viewers who follow SY narration that she wouldn't get the object of her affection.

@ pipit,

i very much agree that it would spoil everything to have the ending revealed this early. i've been vocal about how the mystery of the pairings is one of the reasons why this show has been enjoyable.

nevertheless, i am very interested in the aspect of the unreliable narrator, but not getting to the final answer just yet. after watching the good guy (and reading up on the good soldier, which employs the same storytelling device), i got to thinking that perhaps director pyo has utilized this technique. during the press conference, he mentioned using everything possible to arrive at the goal of loving to be happy, which seems to be the underlying message of the show. so far he has: the comic book style for comedic flashbacks, black and white for the serious flashbacks, a sitcom vibe, and eventually, a miniseries format. so, who's to say he's not using aspects of an unreliable narrator to tell the story?

if the unreliable narrator has been utilized for the show, then, i don't think it's too unreliable, but the narration in episode 1 certainly plays on the viewers' initial impressions. i've had to compare my impressions from episode 8 to that of my initial assumptions from episode 1. just as puzzling as the pairings would be the reliability of the implications of episode 1's narration; as such, i definitely agree with you that viewers should feel cautious.

the pendulum is still swinging even if the unreliable narrator device is at work here because we haven't had any narration since the very start of episode 1. we're still left to follow blindly the story's path because we don't know if the episode 1 narration was merely SY's passing thoughts and we are presently seeing the story as is or if the show is truly SY's narrative. also, regardless of whether or not SY ends up with JS, if the story is from SY's point of view, then, it wouldn't diminish her lead status. to me, it elevates her status even more, maybe even above the leading man's.

as for my cautious opinion on the pairings? i still don't know. the show has succeeded in manipulating my impressions, and it has been a thrill.

I agree with you on the aspect of an unreliable narrator. But since the story thus far has been EY centric (at least in the romance department), I would see a greater reason for SY/JS being the end game. The narrator seems to downplay her own role, instead focusing on the relationship between JS and EY. At this point, I still feel like it could be anyone's game =).

heh, i live in this thread. ;)

@ labchick,

i can see why you would be inclined to believe that; you explained it well. however, i don't think SY's role has been downplayed in the romantic sense as you believe it has: there is still the matter of the implications of her narration in the first episode; her growth as a secretary has not escaped JS's notice, and that implies opening more doors for him to see her other charms; JS slowly accepting SY's reprimands and obviously, trusting her more; the CPR scene at the boxing ring; the playful interaction at jeju island as a way to show the chemistry between them and by the same token, a means of getting part of the audience to root for this couple; and finally, we are seeing SY's crush on JS developing. so, it could still be a case of the unreliable narrator, but as you said, it's still anybody's game.

@ labchick,

btw, i had a similar thought to yours after episode 7. i'll repost my statement from the episode 7 comments section:

while i strongly asserted that JS and EY could be the duo by the show’s finale, we’re still only at the halfway point. i may even have to amend my original belief that EY is the underdog love interest. with how things are unfolding at this point, the writer seems to be portraying SY as the underdog, despite her character embodying the trendy kdrama lead female persona. such a merciless writer …

yes we [SY/JS shippers] do like a lot a musicians who play music in our ship. The kiss between EY/JS is really HOT ^^, but that is what i like ...The more faster is the relation between EY/JS become a couple, the more ''space'' in the plot we do have for SY/JS couple ^^. So after we have this ''HOTTER'' kiss between EY/JS, maybe we going to have something similar with SY/JS .hehe ...[nose blood o.o ]

@ 70 - xylophonic

They have a lot many drama with a long time frienship and become a couple.
My favorite one is http://wiki.d-addicts.com/9_End_2_Outs
I love so much this friendship about friends become a couple. That also a cliché a friend or best friends become a couple. That true about you must feel more cliché with SY/JS relation. But right now, in Coffee House, SY/JS relation is really slowly for the developpement. Until episode 7 at the end and episode 8, we finally see ''THE FEELING'' from SY. The pandora box is finally open but not completely. Maybe when she ''SAW'' the kiss, that she must confront her own feeling for JS.

I feel like you!!!! unpredictable roller coaster ride IS COFFEE HOUSE. Chucked all my preconceived ideas out the friggin window. THAT MY FEELING also -.-;;
That why i'm into so much CH. Make me feel ''FOOL'' because i'm sure is SY/JS couple for the end BUT in the same time PD didn't announce who is the lead so we still dunno. o.o
BUT I do feel the vibe from SY/JS [I'M IN THIS SHIP] and also EY/JS. But many ''SIGN'' and ''INDICATION'' give me the idea for who is the OTP.
I know if i write the ''TIMESCREEN'' from SY is more than EY [people will start to bashing again -.- but they know if true that SY have more scene than EY]

In all drama from other asian country, in a same story.
THE first kiss with the lead is the couple. So the SY CPR with JS isn't a kiss? Because she didn't know how to do the CPR so isn't we can consider a simply kiss ? o.o I don't know if what i write is true but ...in other way it's could ?

The HOT KISS from EY/JS. I'm still can't said my theorie or someone going to die....[me -.-;;] I feel like is Irreal....like a story or a book...
It's just for me ..EY POP HERE and THERE and ask JS what he want for a gifs ..seem everything is irreal. OK i like someone from soompi who said that we have a reality vs fiction.

Isn't something we going to have in COFFEE HOUSE o.o so that why is the mysterious episode 12 we going have ?

That kiss scene was hot and he was so kissing her back. (I re-winded 10 times in disbelief).

Usually in these types of dramas, I find that Eun-young would be the second fiddle Seung-yeon would have been the romantic lead. I'm glad it's not the case because it just goes to show again that the writers like faking out predictable situations.

But then again we are still early in the game and I like not actually knowing how it will all turn out in the end.

@92, MIaka-chan

I agree with you that the basic IDEA of both are cliches, including JS/EY. And I know you that you are just bringing this up to defend the cliche argument against SY, but it must be said that both cliches have been turned on their heads.

I don't think JS/EY as it has been developed is anything similar to other idea of longtime relationships, nor do I think JS/SY has developed similarly to other parings like theirs. (The biggest thing is that no matter what, they both are pretty much still keeping withing their boss/secretary relationship when they are at work. Unlike other shows, where she would just go on and fight with him, or diss him or yell at him. Here's it different. He lets her know when he hears an edge in her voice, and she quickly backtracks. Slowly, he lets her off with more, but still only sensible things mostly. And she also is careful in approaching certain matters, as well as quickly knowing when to backtrack or clarify even when he doesn't particularly get that angry or mind so much.)

The reason I bring it up is because you later say that SY will have to confront her feelings. Here's the thing, I don't think she has any outright "feelings" right now. It's a crush. I guess you can argue that a crush is having feelings, but I differentiate.

This doesn't mean they aren't becoming for relaxed with each other and slowly becoming attached/used to the other. They are. And I would say SY more so than JS, not because of the crush. But because she's visibly being affected whenever she has to leave his presence, or he leaves her presence.

But if she sees that kiss. And by the way, I'm not so sure that that it would be a big cliche for her to have seen that kiss. Because the cliche would've been for them to show her seeing it in episode 8. If we the audience sees her witnessing it only in episode 9, that itself has been a turnaround.

Anyway, if she sees that kiss, she's not going to be devastated right now. She'll tell herself to get over the crush and try to fight it off.

The question is whether/how both JS and SYs feelings will actually grow into something more for each other in the following episodes.

With two groups of very passionate supporters for the pairing, and two other which consist of those who are willing to go with the story and those who could be categorised as the swing voters, CH is without a doubt has offered something different. But how different it really is, is unfortunately still depending on the romantic story between the main characters.

You all probably know by now that I don't like PSY. So, I'm liking Eun Young and Jin Soo pairing as much as I do has nothing to do what so ever with the stars themselves. It's purely their characters and the fact that whenever both of them are together on screen my heart beat increases in spades because of the unexplicable presence/chemistry/undercurrent that surrounds them. And that's before that increadible kissing scene!

It seems that when Jin Soo and Eun Young are together they speak their own language and go to a world of their own. I think that's very unusual. I don't remember ever seeing this kind of connection in other KDrama (ah yes, 9 ends 2 out is almost as good in creating a deep connection between the girl and the guy).

I imagine with this kind of pairing, it's possible to make a remake or another version of their love story latter on. And it's still going to be as exiciting as it is now. I certainly will buy every version of it. Just like I collect all versions of 'The Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre/To Liong To. FYI, this is a chinese classic where the guy and the girl have every reason in the world not to be together. And just like Jin Soo, the guy is fighting his attractions to the girl to the very end. But the girl, being a brilliant, cunning, and ruthless 'devil' that she is, uses her considerable arsenals to fight for their love. For, she knows that deep down he loves her too.

Hope CH will be able to hold our interest till the end and ends the story with a very satisfying end that will enable it to become a new legend of its own.

Ok done with my reply from Soompi dear ^^

@ 94 firsttimenewbie

hehe fellow SY/JS shipper ^^
About the cliché things, that true i'm trying to protect SY from argument who keep said that she is a pure cliché and everything like that. In a same time, i'm trying to make everyone understand that EY is also a cliché so people can't use this argument for to keep see SY/JS are more ''cliché'' than EY/JS. [where some people said that a ''pure'' clean cliché]. Friends arguing become couple is also a cliché ^^.

About SY feeling, sure ^^ i stay outside from debate ^^
Crush or Love [first love like from the mv]
SY do have a crush so can i said that the ''feeling'' is still here?
Be worried for him at night and thought he die with a pills, call him and run to him. I do said she worried too much for him to be a simple crush. Conscience for her feeling for JS isn't right now also. But one sure thing, is the pandora box is a bit open. Just need a ''FULL'' BLASH emotion to open completely ^^.
Do SY know about this ''crush'' o.o ...no sure....[for myself i think she doesn't conscience yet]. Confront her feeling, yes she will. Because right now if you said it's a crush, she will confront with something important that make her conscience ''level up'' about this crush....to another level.

That also can't be true what i said now, but i'm still with SY/JS ...if EY/JS couple are the true OTP, PD must to explain to us ''SY/JS'' shipper with the plot why he did choose this couple. I will still love Coffee House until the end ^^

BTW: i thought isn't nothing to wait for CH for 2 week ...but because i keep write here and SOOMPI for Coffee House, i'm really in fire to watch the episode 9 O.O lol

I'm trying out the movie "My Girlfriend is An Agent" and it's working not too badly for me. If you watched Personal Taste, the actor for Director Choi is also here, and has a lot of amazingly funny scenes with KJH (DC actor is KJH's character's boss.)

I've also heard people say good things about "Capital Scandal".

The only issue is that every time I see KJH with his coactresses I think... wait, that isn't EY?! What's he doing with her!? ;)

Completely OT, but funny should mention- HSDS is also my favorite series of all times! I've seen 6 ('78, '86, '95, '01', 03 ,'10) of the 7 TV series adaptations.. we'll have to talk offline about your favorite one! :)

hehe WUXIA addiction is me. The Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre aka Yi Tian Tu Long Ji or Condor series the PART. You must mean the relation from Wuji and Zhao Min right? Because she was a mongol princess and Zhang Wu Ji was from othodox mother and righteous father with a leader from Ming sect.
His mother told him already, the most beautiful lady is the most problem [cause a problem like herself]. If you compare Zhao Min and EY because Zhao Min and Wuji problem until the end...hum... not really compare ...
Wuji have 4 lady who was in love with him. Zhou Zhiruo was totally in love with Wuji and also him did have a feeling for her but the one he was truly love is ...Zhao Min. BTW ..if you remember who was the childhood friend with Wuji is Zhiruo. She know him before his cousin Bu hui who also meet him in his childhood. Xiao Zhao know Wu ji after ... so normally from the new edition and the last edition from Jin Yong... i could said, the most he LOVE is sure Zhao Min [who i love her personality similar from Huang Rong from LOCH], second it's hard to said...Zhiruo or Xiao Zhao could be debate....He do love his cousin in different love also ...

Well at the end, I just said we can't compare EY to Zhao Ming ....[yes EY is clever but not like too much like Zhao Min
The only one i could put the comparaison with is ...only Huang Rong from LOCH. SHE IS THE MOST CLEVER WOMAN i watch in all time
Zhang Wuji didn't choose the most beautiful lady who is for sure Xiao Zhao [Jin Yong said himself that the most beautiful from his novel is Xiao Zhao. In all his novel is Xiao Zhao hehe ....

People arguing between Zhao Min and Zhiruo beauty...
I do think after i read the novel that ...Zhiruo beauty is more than Zhao Min ...mean a classic beauty ....
but Zhao Min have something that make WuJi fall for....

Between EY and SY beauty ....
they are beautiful and different in style beauty...
EY people must to said she a classical beauty vs SY have a beauty cute ....

beautiful vs cute ?

I do understand you want to said like EY/JS going to protect the love each other over all problem ....

be SY/JS shipper ...i must to said is ok too protect the love they love ....until if someone from this couple change ...they can't protect anymore the couple like EY mv lyrics....
