Park Yong-ha discovered dead at home

Breaking news: Park Yong-ha was discovered dead at his Nonhyun-dong, Seoul, home on the morning of June 30. I’ll update with details if/as they become available.

I am in utter shock. WHAT?

Park Yong-ha died at the age of 32, having debuted fifteen years ago in youth shows like KBS’s 1995 Love Blossoms in the Classroom and 1996’s Start. He shot to fame with 2002’s Winter Sonata, which made him a household name and a “Hallyu star.” He used that fame as a springboard a singing career in Japan, where he enjoyed quite a lot of popularity. He had a successful drama hit in 2008’s On Air, and totally stole my heart in 2009’s Story of a Man, which is one of my favorite dramas EVER.

Most recently, Park Yong-ha was cast alongside Yoon Eun-hye in the high-profile drama remake of Hong Kong film Tian Mi Mi, tentatively titled Love Song.

This is just… awful. Horrible and unexpected. Currently they are not ruling this a suicide, but that’s the foremost presumption.

UPDATE

  • The evening prior to his death (29th), Park missed a meeting with drama producers for his upcoming project Love Song. His manager couldn’t get in contact with him.
  • One producer said that they had seen Park occasionally in a down mood, but attributed it to news of Park’s father suffering from cancer. His father recently moved back home from the hospital after his stomach cancer was deemed late-stage.
  • Park reportedly died from hanging. He was found by his mother in his room with a cell phone cord around his neck.
  • Around 12:40 am, he was with his father, massaging his father’s legs. Park told him “I’m sorry” over and over. He then went into his room, where he was found in the morning.
  • Producers of Love Song are “in panic mode” because Park’s passing leaves them without a lead. Yeah, eff you producers.
  • Park had said in an interview that he suffered from depression, which was exacerbated by prolonged promotional activities abroad.
  • One friend says, “There’s no way to know the real reason, but when I met Park a few months ago, he seemed depressed.” His father’s illness made things worse.
  • Park’s Story of a Man co-star Park Shi-yeon (currently acting in Coffee House) reportedly received a “huge shock” from the news and “is in very bad condition.” She is so distraught that there’s concern she won’t be able to continue filming.
  • Park Shi-yeon spoke with Park on the phone yesterday, but thought he sounded normal.
  • And the media frenzy begins. That photo is from outside Park’s home.
  • The parade of celebrity visits is also just beginning, with stars coming to pay their respects to Park, whose body was transferred to a Kangnam hospital. It’s morning in Korea now, and this will likely continue all day. I won’t be posting on it, but you can rest assured there’ll be plenty of media there as well.
  • His death is even more perplexing because he had made plans to meet friends later in the day.
  • Park’s last phone call (or one of his last) was reportedly with DBSK’s Hero Jaejoong, with whom he’d grown closer as he gave the latter advice about pursuing singer activities in Japan. Jaejoong is currently recording in the U.S. and said, “I spoke with him on the phone yesterday, and his voice sounded so bright. I didn’t feel he was at all different from his normal self. We agreed to have a drink together when I got back to Korea. I’m in such shock.”
  • Park’s last twitter message was posted Saturday the 26th (http://twitter.com/yonaaaaaa) and was about the World Cup. “We lost. But they did well. clap clap clap~ Everyone, let’s clap with warm hears for our national soccer team, who return with heavy steps. Good job!!”
  • Park had just come back from a tour in Japan. The day before that (the 25th), he tweeted, “How could they know to come to the airport and see me, and at such a late hour? ^^ I didn’t tell anyone but how could they know? keke. Impressive~ Anyway, thank you for coming to see me!! Tomorrow at the concert I’ll have to ask, ‘Who came to the airport yesterday?~~’ keke See you tomorrow ^^”
  • In an interview last year while promoting his movie The Scam, Park said, “I’ve suffered from insomnia for the last ten years. I’m rather sensitive. If something bothers me I can’t sleep until it’s resolved.” He added, “I’m envious of people who can sleep well. I think sleep is needed for good mental health.”

So sad! How could he just die and leave his sick farther behind? I don't understand! Who said life is easy? But you have to live on and do what you can.

This is utterly shocking, HE IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE (the other is So Ji Sub) actor since I saw him in Story of a Man (because you highly recommended it at that time, Javabeans, and I was not disappointed). In fact S of a M is my favorite Kdrama of all time.

I have prayed for his family that they will have the strenght to carry on. I will truly miss you.

Pictures of So Ji Sub at the funeral are all really heart breaking...

Here is a story I found that was telling of the special friendship SJS and PYH had....

http://www.wretch.cc...gakinme/8856960

Priscilla wrote:

It was a Midnight Show called “I want to see you, my friend.” Tonight’s guest: Park Yong Ha (from WLS, Loving You) and an actress (I cannot recognize her).

I don't know if that show still exists, but it was a pretty popular show where entertainers were asked, while they were on air, to call their friends (preferably other entertainers) and tell them to come out. This was in order to show which star is friend with whom. Usually, there were 2 guests (or more?) and they were both given chances to call. The guest who got more ‘friends’ to come out won.

Here was the trick. The friends were not supposed to know this, so if 'friends' did not come, everyone watching the program would think "that friend's NOT that close." (This wasn’t always true though, cuz it is usually hard for entertainers to just hang out right when your friend calls you, THAT late.) On the other hand, if that friend showed up, he/she would be 'shocked' to find that the supposed 'cafe' was filled with show host and chorus behind... with direct camera ON. I remember watching this before, and it was nice, cuz it showed some entertainers 'caught unawares' without make-up, nor proper clothing. Once, Yand Dong Gun (from ROYOW) was the guest, but none of the people he called were able to come out... ============================================
Today's Clip shows only Park Yong Ha’s parts.

[quote=Prisci,Mar 3 2005, 01:37 AM]

Today's Clip shows only Park Yong Ha’s parts.

PYH: (low tone, looking down) For me… he’s my best friend, and he’s an entertainer too. His name is So Ji Sub…

Host: So Ji Sub!
Chorus: Woooowooo!!! (getting excited)

PYH: (laughing, surprised) You were not this excited before. What happened?!

Host: Actually, these girls they get excited whenever they hear the name of any man.

PYH: (getting serious again) But this friend… he doesn’t come out much. He’s the style that likes to stay home.

Host: So he might not come out?

PYH: But since he’s my best friend… (calling SJS)

Voice of SJS: (serious) What are you doing?

PYH: I’m at a café. What am I supposed to do here? (holding his laughter) I’m so lonely so I’m drinking ‘café’(he was supposed to say coffee but slipped, cracking up)

Voice: by yourself?

PYH: No, with Kyungsung. (still holding)

Voice: ... I’d take long if I leave now…

PYH: Really? Try to hurry anyways.

Voice: (sighing) O…K…

PYH: OK, hurry up. (chorus ‘woww!!! He hangs up) I was so nervous I said ‘I’m drinking ‘café’ (everyone’s cracking up)

Skip the other guest part====================
Host: I’m think it might be Mr. So Ji Sub who’s coming now… (camera’s focusing at the entrance) I can see through the camera… (Someone’s coming in… ????)

Chorus: Ahhhhh!!!!~ (going wild, it’s SJS! He’s wearing a hat and he’s dress down. As soon as he sees the crowd, he turns around, and leaves)

Host: (standing up trying to see if SJS really left.) Wow, I think he’s shocked.

PYH: (cracking up, and standing, hoping to see SJS coming back) Don’t tell me he’s really leaving…

Other guest: someone else’s coming in.

Host: Don’t worry, he’ll come back. Because your friend…

Friend 2: (Oh Ji Ho, Korean Actor, entering while everyone’s applauding and welcoming him.) Hello…

PYH: (phone rings and he picks up) Hello?

SJS's Voice: (serious) What is it?

PYH: Hee hee hee (cracking up, speechless)

Voice: (commanding) Come out.

PYH: What? (chorus ‘wow!!!’)

Voice: Come out!

PYH: (sheepishly) We’re on air… (noise of deep breathing on the other line) Just come in for a little while.

Voice: (sighing deep) Alright…

PYH: (after hanging up the phone) He was so shocked he ran away. (turning to his Friend 2 and shaking his hand) Hi hyung(older brother), thank you for coming in. And for not getting scared either. (they introduced each other)

Host: (to Friend 2) Is SJS also treating you as hyung?

PYH: Ji Sub doesn’t know him.

(Chorus screaming, SJS’s making the big entrance, bowing. He shakes hands with PYH who cracks up bashfully. We can only see SJS’s back, but these are the words written about what he’s thinking: “You’re dead…”)

Host: You’re friends, right? Usually, when friends come here, they go like “Hey, what’s going on?” But this time, he (SJS) went like: “You’re dead…” (everyone’s cracking up. (To SJS) So, where were you, at Mapo?

SJS: Yes, I was at Mapo.

Host: It’s past 1 am right now. If he calls you this late, could you still come out like this?

SJS: huh… he’s my one and only friend.

Host: (chorus go ‘ahhhh’) I see… your only friend. (pointing at Friend 2) How did you get to know each other?

Friend 2: I got to know him (PYH) playing basketball together. I just came because I was close by.

PYH: Hey… what? (kee kee kee) What do you mean you came just because you were around here? (everyone laughing)

Host: yes, you wouldn’t have come if you were far, right? (pointing at SJS) I feel SJS’s pretty nervous. He came in and he turned around!

SJS: It’s been a while since I’m in front of the camera. I’ve been resting for around 2 months now.

PYH: He finished a drama and he went traveling, just resting. So I haven’t called him for a while, since he’s been away. We haven’t seen each other for a long time, but now I made him come here suddenly like this, so I think he’s just nervous.

Host: I see… So how did you two become friends?

SJS: well… (everyone’s talking at the same time)

Host: This friend doesn’t even remember how they became friends (everyone’s laughing) I’m asking because I don’t think you know, really. For example, Mr Oh Ji Ho here became friend playing basketball. What about you?

SJS: I don’t really know how we became friends.

PYH: (cracking up) That’s a joke… Actually, before, during Mr. Ang’s Show… I mean Mr. Andre Kim Show…

Host: (looks ) If you say Mr. Ang… Who’s going to understand you? It’s not Mr. Im, nor Mr. Yang… Are you talking about Andre Kim?

PYH: Yes.

Host: Then, it’s Mr. Kim.

PYH: (laughing) I just call him ‘Ang’… Anyways, we met at Andre Kim’s Fashion Show, and we found out we were of the same age. But we didn’t have a chance to exchange contact numbers. But later, we met at MBC… meaning: at another production.. And we were like: “didn’t we meet before?” And we exchanged contact numbers and we became friends. But in the case of SJS, he's not spontaneous and he’s not… open-minded. And he doesn’t talk much either.

Host: Yes… mind... open. (joking) Means mind is open, right?

PYH: He doesn’t open his heart easily. That’s why I feel so good hearing from him that I’m one and only friend.

Host: Wow! So you met Mr. So at Mr. Ang’s Show, right? (to SJS) It’s good to see such young men becoming friends like that.

SJS: He was always a good friend. We could meet whenever we felt lonely, and have drinks together. (chorus ‘wow!) And I would pay for the drinks. (everyone breaks out)

Host: He says he’s a friend, but he sounds bitter. (more seriously) Now that you came, what are you feeling now? (SJS’s thinking) Tell us you’re glad you came. Your friend’s feeling sorry for you…

SJS: …hmmm… I’m glad I came (looking down to hide his face. Laughter behind, he laughs a little).

PYH: Really, Ji Sub always just says what he has to say in one word and that’s the end of the story.

Host: You must feel irritated…

PYH: What??? Oh, no… Don’t you think that’s cool? (chorus ‘Wow!!!’)

Host: Didn’t you just say he cuts his words short?

PYH: That’s cool. Even I as a man, I like that style.

Host: (in deep thought) What does that make of us??? (scratching his head) That’s why I’m saying this… We’re far from cutting the words short. Instead we say everything inside out. Explaining, turning words around. (back to SJS) What do you think, so late like this?

SJS: Honestly, I was a little shocked….

=======Last scene
PYH: he bought me lots of drinks, and we spent lots of money together, and that’s how we became closer.

Host: Wow… it’s been so long since we made a man out of this program! (laughter. Final greetings)

The END==========================

I am still very affected by PYH's death too, I sometimes burst into tears in the day, whatever I was then doing. And So Ji Sub's face showing how his heart is actually broken is almost unbearable.

Noticing that So Ji Sub, not PYH's blood sister, has been carrying Park Yong Ha's picture, I have a question : is it possible for a woman in Korea to carry the picture of the deceased (in ancient time and nowadays)?

If his sister could have but did not, I think that SJS carrying it brings an even deeper meaning to this gesture, as he really was PYH's brother.

I don't blame anyone around him for not catching any signs of impending suicide. His tweeter message, his call to a friend, etc. He sounded just like a normal person going through an everyday life! Man! depression is really a silent killer.

RIP PYH

My heart aches whenever I thought bout him, so i found a solution which is to keep watching all dramas he was in. To think that he's still around but taking a LONG LONG break...I hope someone is watching over So Ji Sub now, having to go through the pain of losing someone so dear especially in this industry. He has to overcome and recover. Park Yong Ha, the smiling angel, will always stay in our heart.

Why So Many Suicides?

For many years now, I have been very attached to anything that is Korean. From K-Pop songs, to Kdrama series, movies, language, cuisine, culture, etc. etc. I find everything about it interesting, intriguing, and inspiring.

Yes I do find the artists, particularly the actors and actresses as very inspirational and admirable. So it just shocks me no end why a lot of them commits suicides. They are all beautiful, talented, gifted, and much loved. Me, being non-Korean really cannot comprehend what would be the real root cause of all these. Could it be the culture? Could it of personal values and beliefs in life? In the past years, globalization has taken hold even in Korea. It is evident in their entertainment industry, fashion, some entertainers even ventured doing stints abroad. So it would have been fitting to that they could try to open their mind to a more "enlightened state." That after all the struggles and hardships, there is still hope. That after all they hurt and pain, there is still forgiveness. That after every storm the sun will shine again. That after a fall, one can still rise above all the mistakes. That irregardless of one's religious belief, a human life is sacred and precious, no one should ever take his own life. It is not his to take and end ever.

No one should ever HAVE to take his or her own life. But to say that one's life is not one's own is a disturbing thought.

The suffering must had been unbearable for him to take his own's life.
PYH was a talented actor, and perhaps a warm person to those that knew him. At least he no longer had to suffer anymore.

Depressed people are the most cunning people at putting up "fronts", pretending that everything is o.k., when in reality they are the "walking dead".

I have suffered from depression and insomnia for years. My father died of cancer several months ago, and I can tell you all that Cancer is an evil disease, and so is depression.

Watching your father being eaten by this disease is enough to drive a person insane(for me it was the mental ward). Add to that, Park Yong Ha's mental condition, plus the stress of being an "asset" to all the companies around him. His pain must of been unbearable. I truly feel profound sadness for him...but he is free...and no longer in pain. I pray that his mother who is now dealing with his father's cancer, and the death of her son, can persevere in this very difficult time.

Psychiatric conditions are very complex. And without a good doctor, or team of doctors, individual therapy, medication, group therapy, family support, a person can be left in limbo.

FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO HELP REDUCE SUICIDES. GET INVOLDED. Advocate online. Ask people you care about if they are ok, do not give up on them if they pretend to be ok. Psychiatric illness is like any other illness. It is not a weakness. If you have diabetes you go to a doctor to get it treated. It is the same with depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, etc.

If you are suffering, try to hold on, do not give up...there is help out there that can help keep you alive. If you have depression and cannot work, make getting better your work, forget about the other pressures in life, they do not matter.

I had taken a 1 year break from watching dramas before starting again...and finished the last time with On Air- as a older woman- younger man marathon...his self assured-ness is such a startling contrast wth most younger actors in this genre, that he did stand out...when I read he passed away about 20 min ago, I first thought it would be suicide and it seems somewhat common in Korean actors..

...I do feel dejected that I would not see more of this charming actor..its almost a shame, if he only had some sort of counselling or psychiatrist to help him. Or even some medication. I know depression and how surreal it makes the notion of suicide...its too bad, he didnt give out any distress signals for people to pick up on...that is a very scary symptom of a depressed actor..you just never know whether they are happy or not..

I have never seen the man act. I just heard how popular and successful he was and how lovely his life might have turned out if only he didn't commit suicide. I regret not being able to see him shine on TV and see him before he was gone. I am saddened by his death. I will pray for you. Wherever you might be, whether some part of you still exists or your death put an end to everything including the ever mysterious afterlife. I may not be your fan, but I will remember you once in a while. I may forget your name, but not "you". Thank you for your contribution. Thank you for making us notice that you were there at all. Thank you for sharing your talent, thank you.

I remember spending the day on Dramabeans checking for updates here on the comments and how I felt so sad about an individual who I would at that point probably never meet. If there is an afterlife I hope that PYH is enjoying it and found his peace and best wishes to his family who lost a Son and later a Father.

I was reading my rant the death of the talented actor PYH. The writer believes he was toying with the idea of suicide and probably did put it around his neck but not to kill himself, just toying with the thought. He had his charger plugged into the wall and was electrocuted. Now, the writer says, PYH was a perfectionist and would have left a note, just as Virginia Woolf, the play write, did in the 1940s, when she filled her pockets with pebbles and drowned herself.

There was no autopsy;therefore, the writer says it's an accident. Just like, if a person climbed to a roof and thought about jumping, trips, falls off the roof and dies; is that a suicide?

I was not his fan back then he was alive but I remember clearly the day he went away and I was also shocked.

I don't know why recently I feel like I miss him a lot despite of how little I have known about the man. So I have been searching for any information possible just to get to know more about him - the man who no longer exists.

Feel like I love him, feel like I'm crazy.

Five years have passed. If we could turn the time backm rightly this time :(

I hope there will be so many friends and fans coming to visit him today. I cannot, but I will when the time comes.

Love you forever Yong Ha~

He's the boy of summer (one with sunny character), my favorite season, but why... from now on, summer and June can only bring me sad feelings~!
