Park Yong-ha discovered dead at home

Breaking news: Park Yong-ha was discovered dead at his Nonhyun-dong, Seoul, home on the morning of June 30. I’ll update with details if/as they become available.

I am in utter shock. WHAT?

Park Yong-ha died at the age of 32, having debuted fifteen years ago in youth shows like KBS’s 1995 Love Blossoms in the Classroom and 1996’s Start. He shot to fame with 2002’s Winter Sonata, which made him a household name and a “Hallyu star.” He used that fame as a springboard a singing career in Japan, where he enjoyed quite a lot of popularity. He had a successful drama hit in 2008’s On Air, and totally stole my heart in 2009’s Story of a Man, which is one of my favorite dramas EVER.

Most recently, Park Yong-ha was cast alongside Yoon Eun-hye in the high-profile drama remake of Hong Kong film Tian Mi Mi, tentatively titled Love Song.

This is just… awful. Horrible and unexpected. Currently they are not ruling this a suicide, but that’s the foremost presumption.

UPDATE

  • The evening prior to his death (29th), Park missed a meeting with drama producers for his upcoming project Love Song. His manager couldn’t get in contact with him.
  • One producer said that they had seen Park occasionally in a down mood, but attributed it to news of Park’s father suffering from cancer. His father recently moved back home from the hospital after his stomach cancer was deemed late-stage.
  • Park reportedly died from hanging. He was found by his mother in his room with a cell phone cord around his neck.
  • Around 12:40 am, he was with his father, massaging his father’s legs. Park told him “I’m sorry” over and over. He then went into his room, where he was found in the morning.
  • Producers of Love Song are “in panic mode” because Park’s passing leaves them without a lead. Yeah, eff you producers.
  • Park had said in an interview that he suffered from depression, which was exacerbated by prolonged promotional activities abroad.
  • One friend says, “There’s no way to know the real reason, but when I met Park a few months ago, he seemed depressed.” His father’s illness made things worse.
  • Park’s Story of a Man co-star Park Shi-yeon (currently acting in Coffee House) reportedly received a “huge shock” from the news and “is in very bad condition.” She is so distraught that there’s concern she won’t be able to continue filming.
  • Park Shi-yeon spoke with Park on the phone yesterday, but thought he sounded normal.
  • And the media frenzy begins. That photo is from outside Park’s home.
  • The parade of celebrity visits is also just beginning, with stars coming to pay their respects to Park, whose body was transferred to a Kangnam hospital. It’s morning in Korea now, and this will likely continue all day. I won’t be posting on it, but you can rest assured there’ll be plenty of media there as well.
  • His death is even more perplexing because he had made plans to meet friends later in the day.
  • Park’s last phone call (or one of his last) was reportedly with DBSK’s Hero Jaejoong, with whom he’d grown closer as he gave the latter advice about pursuing singer activities in Japan. Jaejoong is currently recording in the U.S. and said, “I spoke with him on the phone yesterday, and his voice sounded so bright. I didn’t feel he was at all different from his normal self. We agreed to have a drink together when I got back to Korea. I’m in such shock.”
  • Park’s last twitter message was posted Saturday the 26th (http://twitter.com/yonaaaaaa) and was about the World Cup. “We lost. But they did well. clap clap clap~ Everyone, let’s clap with warm hears for our national soccer team, who return with heavy steps. Good job!!”
  • Park had just come back from a tour in Japan. The day before that (the 25th), he tweeted, “How could they know to come to the airport and see me, and at such a late hour? ^^ I didn’t tell anyone but how could they know? keke. Impressive~ Anyway, thank you for coming to see me!! Tomorrow at the concert I’ll have to ask, ‘Who came to the airport yesterday?~~’ keke See you tomorrow ^^”
  • In an interview last year while promoting his movie The Scam, Park said, “I’ve suffered from insomnia for the last ten years. I’m rather sensitive. If something bothers me I can’t sleep until it’s resolved.” He added, “I’m envious of people who can sleep well. I think sleep is needed for good mental health.”

i thought the title was meant to be figurative, as in referring to a role in drama or something else. I can't believe it has a literal meaning! A most shocking news of the year.

Oh my gosh... I saw the title on my phone and thought "must be another drama he's in", or it's a "character" he's playing... This is too shocking, too sad.

Is there a lot of pressure in the k-ent business? PYH case reminds me of Jang Ja Yeon. It was huge at the time because of her dying notes pointing out the abuse treatment she got and the "VIP men" that were involved. But then, that was all we knew and it seemed like it all got quiet again, quite fast. Nothing really changed since then didn't it?

Sorry, I didn't mean to link the 2 cases. But suicide... it's so sad. Rest in peace, Park Yong Ha.

I'm totally devastated by this news, though I do understand where such feelings of inner pain, turmoil and torment stems from. My thoughts and prayers are with PYH, his family, extended familiy, friends and acquaintances who must be in an undescribeable amount of suffering right now and I hope that such more awareness can be raised in relation to such mental issues and become one that is more widely addressed and on the national agenda, but maybe that's wistful thinking for now I'm not sure :\ . But I'm just speechless and blown away that it would happen to one of my favourite actors, of whom I really admire and respect for his acting, singing and all-round artistry and talents.
With this, he will be sorely missed and my sincere condolences to his family and friends. We will all continue to hold you in our prayers and I hope you find peace and rest wherever you are. May you rest in peace Park Yong Ha and God Bless.

its a little strange that he would make future plans with people like that. from what i understand of these things, usually people planning suicide tend to give things away and distance themselves.

I dunno. Is it really suicide? Hanging self using cellphone cord? Is it really possible? Just wondering... Any physics expert here care to explain? I'm sorry if my question is out of context. it's just some questions niggles me at the back of my head after the sadness calms. No suicide note. Arranged to meet friends. Call friends happily... Again... BIG SORRY if my question is not in good taste.

my condolences to his family.. his mother and father--no parents should have to bury a child. especially when they are already suffering from cancer.

I'm also devastated by this news... Angry, speechless and Shocked!!!
How come someone so (easily) took ones own life. That's what I don't like about (Korean) celebs. There are so many now.
Please just stop, don't make suicide like some kind of solutions.
There are so many who is less fortunate than you...
Please be strong, be patient and believe that God will not push you to the edge, He will guide you and save you.
RIP, Park Yong Ha... You'll be missed.
May God bless you and family.

This is just awful news!!!! :(

Seems that a lot of Korean entertainers were and may be are suffering from depression. I do hope after all these incidences of suicide, they would try to see for professional help.

Depression is a kind of modern world sickness...there is nothing wrong about seeking help and I hope ppl do undertstand this.

Sad ...

I had a close one who had depression [which i wasn't aware of till his death] and he committed suicide, which left me shocked to the very core years back...

Damn! Is there anyone who do not suffers from depression when he/she died? I know this is a seroius ailment but they have all the money and affaction from us to seek help. I know two people with depression in real life and one is a very serious cause but even he sees a doc and is on medication instead of killing himself.

I'm very dissapointed in PYH if he really killed himself. I cannot be the "understanding" fan anymore. Taking his own life was so senseless and I won't mourn him but his parents. He left them especially his mother who will suffer the loss of her husband too soon. Baka!

depression is the worst disease right now, especially in Korea; it moved me a lot when this article said he asked his father for forgiveness and that he sounded/looked his best his last day on earth.

PARK YONG-HA, RIP. Where ever you are now, be happy. Saranghae Yong-ha ssi.... You will always be in my heart. Annyeong.

......WHAT?! That can't be............That can't be............

........Is that TRUE about what happens to Park Yong Ha? No, no............How can I see this picture (above) of Park Yong Ha who seems so fine but he's already gone.........??
No, no........... (sad looks) I am not happy to hear about this dreadful new about Park Yong HA that it really really made me so sad and disappointed -- because I really LOVE him since I love his BEST drama "Story Of A Man" and "On Air", of course..........
I was happy and excited to looking forward for Yoon Eun Hye and Park Yong Ha in the incoming drama 'Love Song" --- BUT it's already late, oh man. I wish that you should NOT missed all of thing what you will have seen your importance future this happens.......but it isn't.

Rest in peace, Park Yong Ha ---- I am really sorry to hear about his family that made you so, like, through hard time BUT you should have try to get positive, you know........Anyway, I'd better stop typing this comment about him, my apologize. Repeat, REST IN PEACE. =(

Sorry if this may offend many of you. Honestly, I dunno why people say rest in peace for him?. For me RIP is only for those who died naturally. When his soul is still wanders how could he be in peace?.

My apology I have no sympathy for anyone who play god to himself. Very bad example for the young people out there.

It is so ironic that he is so afraid to live than to die. Couldn't he see when life gives him 100 reasons to cry, he can show life that he has 1000 reasons to to smile.

Yeah... blame it to the depression but isn't it the rainbow of life that make us a stronger and better person?. Depression is no excuse, everyone in this world may have their own depression at different level. How you cope and resilient is what counts and make you a man.

Sorry again but PYH just smashed all the appreciation I have had for his talent.. And I would rather have my tears for something more worthy than to a coward like him.

Soleram: It is no point to argue about what will happen to his soul, it is his kar. Life is a suffering and his soul will eventually discover the path of removing of suffering.

I will be chanting for him and hope he will find wisdom in four noble truths and be guided by the noble eight-fold path in his next reincarnation. (1) Right view (2) Right intention (3) Right speech (4) Right action (5) Right livelihood (6) Right effort (7) Right mindfulness (8) Right concentration.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noble_Eightfold_Path

I guess sometime it is more important to be kind, rather than being right. That's why RIP is used.

BTW, I can see your point, personally I think what you said is factual, true, beneficial, but unendearing and disagreeable to others. However, it may not be the proper time to say it since PYH has gone. It will be more helpful to tell him before he committed suicide!! But, now it is too late!! So, I think being kind is more important and please chant or pray for him!!

I don't often hv time to come here but i've been a huge fan of JB and last night before logging off watching one of Kdramas, i thot of coming here & much to my shock this news was on first page of dramabeans & i was really shocked! i'm still in disbelief...it can't be...i was having goosebumps as i read it! my heart goes out to him & his family! he's such a promising actor/singer with a beautiful voice and he ended his life...i really hope that people or celebrities like him won't think of doing this anymore! A few mos. ago there was Choi Jin young who was also one of my favorites aside from his sister....I hope people like them would seek professional help cause depression is curable! I read this morning in one of the Kor. online newspapers that celebrities don't tend to seek help cause of being ashamed that their popularity might be affected, but i think these celebs are wrong, we as fans would understand that just get some help & not end your life in such a waste!
May he rest in peace & deepest condolences to his loved ones & friends! We will miss you Park young ha ssi!

i still cannot believe that he's gone...i can't begin to imagine the pain he must have been doing through.

I dislike how people think suicide is the easy way out and that Park Yong-Ha was selfish to take this easy way out. How is making the decision to end one's life EASY? People who commit suicide don't choose suicide because it's just so easy. How is it easy to die thrashing at the end of a cord and competing with your body's natural mechanism for survival so that you could end a mental anguish that is much more severe than your lungs burning from lack of oxygen and your neck being pulled and snapped? People with depression commit suicide because they truly believe, in their warped sense of reality, that is the ONLY way out. They are blind to all other paths.

Korea really needs to make mental illness less of a stigma and to inform the public about the existence of mental illness. At the moment, asian culture thinks depression= "just feeling a bit sad lately. will be better once I buy myself a Tiffany's bracelet/win the lottery/get a cute boyfriend." and not a serious disease. I think fans of celebs, in general, should be vocal abt supporting seeking therapy so celebs can feel more comfortable abt asking for help.

RIP Park Yong-ha and my sincerest condolences to his friends and parents, especially his mom who had to see her son like that and who will grow old without husband or son.

For all those (morons) who said u got anger by not computing, throwing names at him, spitting your iinsensitive words around (solaram in particular, I'm talking to you). First, F*CK OFF! IF you dont know a thing about clinical depression, dont say irresponsible junk.

Have u ever consider it's your own intolerance, ignorance and close-mindedness towards a disorder/condition like depression that is causing you such good grieves!?!!?
then, go and try volunteering at a hospital's psychiatric ward and spend however little of your time just being around patients suffering fr this disease (please dont open your gob on them, thank you very much, last they need is suffering more). It's all consuming, where you may get some 'satisfaction' in expressing your narrow views and stink up the world on this matter, they do not get even such 'rewards'. can u imagine when u r hospitalized for months and your loving husband of X years bringing u a rose everyday, and you still can not consciously, as hard as you tried, feel warmth and joy and wished the visit and the day, any day will end sooner?! I witnessed that daily, as a bystander, and felt a hollowing hopelessness even in her room. She's hospitalized, medicated, with a loving family that visited her daily, religion was in her life, yet everyday is filled w/ excruciating psychological pain. I felt despair and hopelessness engulfing her yet as a person that should provide her professional help, there's just so much a human being can do when facing a complicated illness. There are battles you fight and win, then there are those you are at the losing end. Can I fault her at all for the despair and hopelessness just being around her?!! AM I NUTS?! R U? i'm starting to doubt how normal your brains r functioning.

Oh my god, i cannot believe it. I'm so sad, this is horrible. Why, why is there so much people who commit suicide ?! I do understand that depression is one of the worst disease and not everybody is able to understand it but it's hard to think that he's dead because of suicide and depression. I'm gonna miss him, he was so talented, and cute. I only saw one of his drama (Story of a man) but i really liked it. RIP..

(for all your comments, i don't think that here's the right place to argue about suicide being easy or not.)
