Ratings drop further for Bad Guy and Road No. 1

Kim Jae-wook, So Ji-sub

Ouuuuch.

Looks like the World Cup really did a number on SBS’s postponed dramas. While Monday-Tuesday’s Coffee House dropped to a 5.6% (from approximately 9%) after two weeks off the air, Wednesday-Thursday’s Bad Guy had an even bigger fall — down from 15% to 5.6%. Yikes. Out of sight, out of the viewers’ minds, apparently.

Road No. 1 also lost viewers in its second week, going from 9% to 7.2%. This means that ratings leader Baker King Kim Tak-gu on KBS widened its lead with a 31% rating.

I can understand the smaller drop for Road No. 1, which in my opinion was deserved — let’s be honest, its first showing was ROUGH. And it’s too bad for Coffee House, which was holding steady before the delay. But it’s worst of all for Bad Guy (which is beleaguered enough as it is), which had been climbing steadily before it lost all its momentum.

I’m going to finish my dramas regardless of whatever numbers they pull in, so these numbers don’t affect me (or any of us who get our drama fixes via the internet, really). It’s just too bad for the actors, who suffer drops in morale and miss out on CF opportunities when their dramas fall by the ratings wayside.

…Well, bummer. And P.S. how stupid is it that 1000-1500 of Korean households are representative of 44+ million people? I mean, I know the theory, but still. How sad for the cast of Bad Guy. Maybe we can find those people and bribe them….

”People were upset because SBS is the newest broadcasting station and the people in the countryside don’t have SBS and therefore were unable to watch the world cup.”

    –That’d explain a lot, then.

It’s like that in every country where they do ratings. For example, in the USA, they have 25.000 households being the source for their ratings (check out Nielsen Ratings in Wikipedia).

we don’t need to be upset re to rating , just watch what you like , i go for Road number one .

I feel so sad for So Ji-sub this week. Rating aren’t everything but I’m sure it’s only adding to his stress this week that something he worked so hard on isn’t being received well. :(

Bad Guy’s first 2eps were decent and I was going to continue but after that spoiler I just don’t know…plus the female leads (besides that young actress whose name I forget) aren’t really doing it for me.

In other news: I thought I was gonna cry when I logged onto the site and the header was of Story of a Man.

I’ve watched all 3 dramas and I think there’s a reason why the Baker Kim Tak Gu (KBS) is pulling out front of the competition between Bad Guy (SBS) and Road Number 1 (MBC). Bad Guy is a thrilling story but has been plagued by all the cancellations, etc. The story itself is intriguing but for the average Korean viewer, I think its hard to relate to why Kim Nam Gil is out for the revenge. As for Road Number 1, I saw episode 1 and it was quite rough. It’s been promoted heavily by MBC and with all the production fanfare about how expensive it was to produce, how everything was already shot, etc… I think it overhyped the drama and again, the average Korean viewer found it hard to relate to (not to mention whiplash of the story). However, with Baker Kim Tak Gu story, it was hardly promoted at all and honestly, me included, I believe people tuned in because they didn’t know what this drama was about. Then, the story, directing, acting, and scenery kept people interested. It came with zero expectations and when people were pleasantly surprised by it (which JB even admitted), it becomes a hotter drama bc of the no expectation.

I agree with an earlier comment that a given show had to be the sacrificial lamb for that time slot. My hunch is that SBS decided BG would be the one, because like Star’s Lover (which was mismatched with the audience), it’s getting a lot of foreign investment (i.e. BG is a co-production with a Japanese company.) In terms of real losses, SBS decided it’d have to be the one.

On the other hand, Road No. 1′s ratings are shocking. Or to put this in perspective, MBC somehow made East of Eden popular. EAST OF FRIGGING EDEN.

there are clear reasons why bad guy aand roadno1. is falling in ratings. road no.1. just really sucks in storyline. over rated with top stars but not a good story line. bad guy lags to the extreme in storyline. and even viewers were complaining about the storyline dragging. plus the unnecessary jap subtiles and shooting in japan. viewers complained that it just looked like the drama was overly focusing on paying omage to the jap’s vacation trip come to japan blabla commercializing/sponsoring. ppl watch dramas for the story not to look for where they want to go on their next vacation trip. it leaves really bad impression to viewers. thats why they dropped.

You know, it has to be said: the MBC Wed/Thursday timeslot may be the most lethal time slot any part of the week among all 3 channels. Shows just DIE there.

for those who does not watch baker king yet, for me it is good! I love the drama. I agree that the first to second episodes were not that great and to tell you the truth i almost gave up on the first episode because i thought it was kind of boring and not good but i still tried to watch it and as i watched (till the current episode), i can totally say i was hooked in that drama! it was not the typical story about competitions of baking and the storyline was great! it was not only the character but the whole story so i still believe it deserve the number one rating…

for other dramas, i still have not watched them except Coffee House and Baker King…^_^

SBS isn’t new,They were in the Industry for 20 Years now.

    Anyways,As far as I am concerned,SBS has 10 Regional Outputs,Compared to MBC’s 19 and KBS’s 20 plus.

KBS subscribes to TNmS, SBS is an AGB Nielsen Susbcriber

MBC subscribes to both Ratings Providers.

If ratings aren’t Credible to you,Ask these Networks to stop their subscription.

    That’s all.

Watching King of Baking now and episode was not too bad, I agree, the first 30 mins is kind of typical kdrama and predictable, but after they set up the story, it became much more interesting to watch. ie: Tak Guk as a mischievous and spunky little youth pining after bread and scheming with his friends to get their hands on some. The story is moving at a good pace, and it’s not dragging out all the gimmicky plotlines like someone else mentioned above.
