Whoa, I was NOT expecting this, but I think I like it: Yoon Eun-hye has been cast in upcoming drama series Love Song, the remake of the epic Hong Kong romance Tian Mi Mi (Comrades: Almost a Love Story). The original 1996 film spanned ten years and starred Leon Lai and Maggie Cheung.
The drama series has already cast its lead male in Park Yong-ha, which makes this a high-profile pairing. I’d heard that the drama was looking for two big Hallyu names to expand on its international appeal, and with these two, they’ve certainly got that punch. Park is one of those actors who is probably, comparatively speaking, more famous abroad as a “Hallyu star” than he is at home, thanks to hits like Winter Sonata and On Air. And Yoon Eun-hye is just about the biggest name actress of her age range, both at home and abroad.
In Love Song, Yoon plays Yoo Chae-hwa, a hard-working woman who comes to live in Korea from China. Chae-hwa is very innocent and is described as “the one unforgettable love for one man.”
U.S. studio Warner Bros. has expressed interest in buying the Stateside broadcast rights to the kdrama. The production company is currently in the process of negotiating licensing rights to 11 Asian countries, as well as arranging overseas location shoots. Writing is Oh Soo-yeon of earlier Hallyu hits Winter Sonata and Autumn Love Story, while the director is Ji Young-soo of Oh Pil-seung Bong Soon-young. (He also did Yoon’s ill-fated My Fair Lady last summer, but let’s just forget about that hot mess. His 2007 Flowers For My Life, on the other hand, was lovely.)
This ought to be Yoon’s most challenging role to date. She has a wonderful way of immersing herself in her characters, but I think her range is narrow — she’s brilliant in heartfelt, warm roles like Coffee Prince, but lackluster when putting on a persona that’s very different from her easy-going real-life persona, as in My Fair Lady. I look forward to Park Yong-ha, having come around to him rather late in his career with last year’s fantastic Story of a Man.
Love Song will begin filming in August and plans to air toward the end of the year.

Tian Mi Mi is on my favourite film of all time, Yoon Eun-hye is one of my favourite actresses that is still due to fulfil her full potential. I am not too hyped up about the writer though, it is cliché 101 writng that tends to drag on for at least 10 remaining episode once the initial set up worn out. What was so great about Tian mimi was the subtle play on chicles in a realistic and heart felt way.
They better not screw it up! And please keep the original sound track theme. I sincerely hope Yoon avoid last year’s My Fair Lady embarrassment and deliver a good one this time.
Yet another drama to be excited for. Hope it does well for YEH’s sake; My Fair Lady was bad aside from the acting of the 4 main characters. I just hope the drama isn’t overly melodramatic (based on the writer’s background.)
OMG two of my favorites actors. PYH is defnitely one of the best actors out there. He does not do series much but when he does it’s always great.

I definitely agree with you that YEH seems to have difficulty acting as characters very different from her real life personality. Most of the k-dramas I’ve seen her act in have her play the same kind of archtype.
But I love her nonetheless and will add this to my drama watch list!

While Maggie Cheung remains an actress whose characters I’ll always clutch close to my heart and feel it’s impossible for any other actress to match up to her, I am happy to hear it’ll be YEH playing this character.
I’m imagining her playing someone close to her warm and likable Coffee Prince role, except more ladylike. Yeah, she’ll nail it.
This morning I read that Goo Hye Sun is inked for a new series and this evening there’s news about Yoon Eun Hye. I am officially in heaven and care not one whit about YEH expanding anything. Where she goes, I will follow…

I am so happy about this. This sounds very different from what she has done in her past dramas. This sounds like a real challenge for her. It doesn’t hurt that it’s a big scale drama neither. I hope that this will be another successful drama for her and I can’t wait to see if there is chemistry between Park Yong Ha and her. I have the feeling that there will be chemistry between them (Park Yong Ha seemed very happy when she won the Baeksang awards in 2008 — he was the MC).

True, YEH is talented. She can portrays emotions in this incredible natural way, but at the same time… I really wish she would be in more dramas to get more experience in acting as I get the feeling that she lacks this something that my mind is too foggy to pinpoint.
Still, I’m happy that she’s back. And I hope that since her last role, this one will prove to be a major improvement. She’s playing an “innocent” role, which I expect her to do well in. But at the same time, I’m looking forward to how she portrays her mannerism and speech as person from China – which will be interesting to see

Comrade: Almost a Love Story is my fav movie. YEH is my fav actress but, in my opinion, it will be a miscast. If the drama is to closely follow the orignal story in the movie, it will be a very big challenge for YEH in terms of her acting ability. Maggie Chueng got best actress awards for her nuanced portrayal of this role. Let’s hope YEH could rise to the occasion.

To be fair, Winter Sonata did seem to spawn all the cliches we now know so well, but still… That’s not much better.
I do like the lead couple (YEH truly is gorgeous, and fantastic when the role suits her – let’s forget when it doesn’t) and original HK movie is pretty good… so we’ll see.

So excited for YEH, I liked all her genes dramas. The last drama not that great because people expected her more from her last CP, I blamed the production/writer for it, but MFL stills end at 2 digits which was ok. PYH was good in AMS, so I hope there will be good chemistry between them (based on what he said at Baeksang about YEH). Maggie more experiened in acting than YEH of course the age and movies dramas she did, YEH stills can do this!!!

Man, she is a beaut this one, a real beaut. I really do hope she can pull this off with flying colors. I’m not saying to the point of not having criticism (criticism is needed for a person to improve), but the things the press/critics said about her in My Fair Lady was downright heartbreaking. this is certainly gr8 news!!..I’m a huge YEH fan and I hope she fairs better than with MFL ….2010 really does seem to be a good year fr dramas…i just hope the latter half wont be the same as the first cus a lot of dramas i had huge expectations for in the first half were serious dissapointments (bt there were some others that were gr8)…i’m curious as to how this pairing will work…bt im onboard nevertheless…;frm what i hear the original movie was a classic so I hope this goes well…even though it sounds a tad too melo for my taste..its a good thing the drama wont be hear till the end of the year…gives me a long enough break since CS…btw YEH looks absolutely smokin in that pic!!

I do love YEH, though I really disliked My Fair Lady, but this sounds like a role that she will be able to pull off so I’m looking forward to it. I’ve only seen PYH in Story of a Man and I wasn’t totally taken in by him (Kim Kang Woo and Park Ki Woong sort of eclipsed him) but I liked him well enough so the drama should be interesting.
It maintained #1 & #2 ranking throughout it’s airing. And it finished #1 beating out dramas like You’re beautiful in the ratings. But why is it a failure?
I CAN’T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!! I’ve been waiting for her to come back. And hopefully, this will be a good vehicle for her rather than MFL.
