Bad Guy broadcast cut to 17 episodes

Kim Nam-gil‘s extension was denied, and he will be reporting to army duty on July 15. That means that the beleaguered production of Bad Guy will have no choice but to cut down its run from 20 episodes to 17, according to a source from the drama production.

Currently, the drama has filmed 14 episodes and they’ve been hurrying to cram as much filming in to get as much of Kim’s scenes shot before he has to leave. However, time is not on their side and they have made the decision to cut the broadcast short after talks with SBS’s drama department.

Because the drama has been in a mad dash to film, this means they will actually complete their shoots on July 13. Bad Guy will air Episodes 10 and 11 this week. That means its finale, Episode 17, will air on August 5.

Fingers crossed for a plot that makes sense with the cuts. All in all, this doesn’t have to be a terrible thing, if it allows for tighter storytelling and swift pacing as it heads toward the finish.

Love this drama and its unfair that it has to be rushed, wishing KNG all the best. He is a great actor and his fans will be waiting his return.

Thanks for the update JB. Much appreciated :)
I have my fingers crossed.

BTW, I came across this scans of MOVIEWEEK magazine (not sure which issue, but was only recently posted) from a Chinese forum, and thought you might be interested to translate and share it here. :)

From the Chinese translation I saw, it's about next generation of new actors and actresses. Among them your beloved Kang Ji Hwan (I like him too!) is placed 2nd and Kim Nam Gil 1st. These results are obtained from questionnaire type of survey with people in the related field like directors, producers etc. Includes both drama and movie stars.

Sorry that I've only got this 2 pages since the forum where I found this is dedicated to KNG. >.<

@13 - javabeans specifically asked that you put a spoiler warning if you're gonna post that.

And I know this is going to sound a bit bitchy, but I find it hilariously ridiculous that people are like why can't they just give him an extension? I understand that people are disappointed, but this is the LAW, people. Unless you're in school or have a health problem, extensions aren't given out just b/c that person is a celebrity and needs to finish a drama. Celebrities aren't given special treatment and they shouldn't be. Regular citizens have to disrupt their lives to do their military service, so why should celebrities be treated any differently?

this is such a shame - while the story already got me less interested in the drama as a whole, it sucks even more that they have to rush the filming.

i'm a tad afraid that the scenes with kim nam gil won't jell as well - especially since they're filming everything ahead of time. you know how sometimes chemistry between actors improves over time thanks to the shared experience of working together? yeah, i'm afraid that THAT may not be as good as it could have been. even though they're all professional actors and all that, i still believe that experiencing something through the whole thing can help with the chemistry.

but anyways... this is such a shame for the PD and everyone.

is the drama that's after this i am legend, or gumiho?

Messy, messy, messy....that's all I can say.

I'm waiting for this series to end before I start watching. I really don't have a life if I watch a drama while it's airing.

Anyway, I think this is one of the most badly planned productions that I know of. SBS..tsk, tsk. You knocked it's premiere airing date around; you got the fans upset; then you preempt it for WC2010; AND then the ratings plummeted. Where are those fans anyway? Aren't they watching it anymore?

in a way, if they can pull it off, this could be a good thing if it tightens up the plot - a lot (A LOT) of dramas have pacing problems.

as long as they end it well. please don''t let it end in a weird, ambiguous way. because of this.

I am bummed about Kim Nam Gil will able to leave about 3 days soon! Ouch, I hope these people who work as a production still have rush while trying to complete this awesome drama "Bad Guy" before Kim Nam Gil leave.

Ooo........I hope this drama won't be mess up and keep this drama still sooo AWESOME by story plotting line, I hope so! (grins)

Wow. Not cool with the spoiler, dude.

Anyway.

I too have hope that this will become a leaner, meaner production now that they're REALLY under the gun. And on a much more shallow note...his hair is going to be gone soon! (sob)

:-(

This really makes me wonder what they were smoking at SBS earlier this year. I suspect that when they yanked Bad Guy from the schedule that the production company slowed down shooting. If THEY had had any sense, they would have continued and put it all in the can before it started airing, that way getting all of their ducks in order and not having to come down to the wire like this. If SBS had had any sense, they never would have jerked it around in the first place.

Ah well. It's a good show. I'll finish it out and enjoy every last minute.

In the meantime, good luck to KNG - hope he does well for the next 2 years where ever they see fit to use him.

This really sucks. BG was the one Korean drama I'd gotten into after years of drought. I don't think I'll be wanting to watch much more though if freaking KIM NAM-GIL will barely even be in the remaining episodes.

I am pissed.

That's at least what I hope!

Of course it could easily turn into a hot mess with random plot holes too.....I also feel bad for the rest of the cast. I mean Kim is the headliner but his leave affects everyone else.

It just sux that they didnt get to filming the drama earlier in the year and had to wait till the last minute. I really liked the cast and the story of Bad Guy.

Less episodes is not a bad thing, personally 16 eps for a drama is more than enough, otherwise after about ep 12, i find it drags on & on until 3 eps left....

We'll see if they can make sense of things in a hurry!

and i so want to watch Bad Guy, too bad about the episode shortage, hopefully it'll be executed well.

It's just been one bad turn after another for Poor Bad Guy, I'm sure we won't be hearing the end of it, even after the show finishes we'll be hearing stuff.
Poor Kim Nam-gil.

I read the title for the post below and thought -- What the heck? Lee Han's reporting for duty already? But it's Lee Wan. Thursday the 15th eh? :(

What's the difference if it's a few days later? They are so strict! Don't they know Kim Nam Gil has such responsibilities like completing his drama to satisfy the needs of millions of ahjummas and fangirls around the world? ;)

They should have approved his extension - let him complete his day job so that he can go serve the army happily and at peace! Bah!

#35 - Well, nobody gets to mess with the government or the army. In fact I am not sure why he shouldnt have gone earlier, or why did he take up a drama knowing he is due for duty so soon. But of course, Bad guy was thrown around abit.

I think it is not a bad idea to cut the no. of eps, so that there is less moody shots of everyone and the story will just move along quickly.

it might not be a bad thing to shrink from 20 to 17. Often, korea drama are well known to be draggy from 12 episodes or 15 onwards to the end. It will save the crew time and also viewers time. Cheers!

and i like to add that army is about training the person to defend the country. i do not see anything wrong with army asking him to go into camp. Whats there to be complaining abt from fans?

The issue is the co should have done more and not expect army to extend the enlisting date. its wrong right from the begining.

he is a korean and he should be treated like any other koreans when it comes to National service. I dont think its wrong or infleixble of the army. dont forgot that he has extended his enlistment date once.

Ah, this makes me reminiscent of a similar situation in The World They Live In, where Joo Joon Young's B Team get two hours' sleep daily while filming Sohn Kyu Ho's sageuk drama. Thanks to Noh Hee Kyung's insights, I'm imagining Bad Guy's A and B Teams watching over equipment, bunking at the studios and generally not eating. Also, will anyone be replicating the oh-so-cute scene where Hyun Bin and Song Hye Kyo cuddle on the upper bunk? Mmmm.

I hope no one gets sick over KNG's extension denial. Best of luck to Bad Guy!

Regardless of the shortened time on the drama, I still believe that this will be a good thing. The drama now can cut out the unnecessary pieces and focus more on the important. I do like this K-Drama very much and I feel sad that they have to shorten it but, the show must go on. Lets be thankful and hopefully it finishes with a nice twist.

@ momosan: It's really not on SBS. KNG's extension was denied. There's nothing anyone can do about that. Plus, when filming a series, all production companies film 4-6 episodes before doing the next set of episodes at a later time.

There is no doubt that the actors and actresses will deliver well although the episodes will be shortened. Most especially Kim Nam Gil, from firs to the present episodes his acting has been consistent. It will all depends as to how the script writer will deal with the storyline. I just hope that the story will still be as smooth as before. I will really miss Kim Nam Gil, I am hoping to see him again in another light romantic drama but too bad he will be away for at least 2 years. Korean productions will run out again with good-looking competent actors and they will just cast actors again who are not as good as those who are already serving the army.Anyway, I just like to congratulate Kim Nam Gil for a great performance in this drama. I will wait for your return.
