Coffee House: Page 10

I’ve read a lot of comments maligning Jin-soo, but I’ve got to say, I LOVE him — as a character. As a person, he’s frustrating and selfish and infuriating, but as a character? Rich, complex, and intriguing.

He’s showing a lot more depth than we could have guessed at the start, when he was all smiles and politeness and pure facade. And I love dramas where relationships continue to evolve, as they do here.

PAGE 10 RECAP

After Jin-soo collapses in his studio, he’s able to muster enough strength to jot down a few notes to Seung-yeon, directing her to fill his prescriptions. In a panic, Seung-yeon races to the hospital to find his doctor, fills the sleep-aid prescriptions, and dashes back to the studio.

(I’ve been trying to let it slide, but it’s getting a little out of hand, so: Good lord that girl runs like an idiot. I’m sorry to say it like that, but there’s no better way to put it. I’ve defended Ham Eun-jung’s acting in this drama and found it perfectly serviceable, but she’s been slipping in recent episodes. That exaggerated run does her no favors, either; it’s like Mi-nam’s Kindergartner Run in You’re Beautiful, but even more exaggerated.)

But back to the point. She brings the pharmaceuticals to Jin-soo, who gets to work injecting himself with an IV. Seung-yeon is startled at his facility with drug self-administration, until he reminds her to give his profile a closer read. (She recalls that he went to medical school.)

We’re not told exactly what Jin-soo’s condition is, but since he’s using an IV and he seems fatigued, I presume that he’s suffering exhaustion, exacerbated by skipped meals, dehydration, and extreme stress.

When Eun-young calls, Jin-soo doesn’t want to answer, so Seung-yeon makes an excuse for him. I don’t know if Eun-young really believes that he’s not home, but she accepts this response with a little disappointment.

Jin-soo dismisses Seung-yeon for the day, which worries her because she doesn’t like the idea of leaving him alone in his condition. By now she knows that he won’t stand for protest, so instead she thinks up an alternate idea: She sends Grandma over to tend to him.

It’s a pretty good idea, too, and shows us that she’s getting to know him pretty well. As she later explains to Dong-wook, Jin-soo is fundamentally unable to be rude to strangers. Therefore, Seung-yeon could try her utmost to tend him and urge him to eat, but he’d just lose his temper and kick her out. He isn’t on familiar terms with her grandmother, however, and therefore will feel enough social pressure to reluctantly do as she tells him.

When Jin-soo finds himself with one pushy granny on his hands insisting that he eat, he calls Seung-yeon, who feigns a bad phone connection in order to ignore his outburst. She hangs up feeling pretty proud of herself and not the least bit sorry to have acted counter to Jin-soo’s wishes to be left alone.

Seung-yeon explains this as she waits downstairs in the book cafe, sharing a dessert with Dong-wook, who is adorably smitten with her. In fact, the other employees note that Dong-wook thinks he’s being Mr. Smooth in keeping his relationship under the radar, when in fact he’s about as understated as a Korean grandma bargaining for discounts.

Sadly for those of us who find Dong-wook the cutest thing ever, this scene encapsulates their relationship in a nutshell: Seung-yeon talks about her job, her mind still fixated on Jin-soo and his illness, while Dong-wook listens with half an ear, more preoccupied with doing little things to win Seung-yeon over. Like giving her a piece of dduk (rice cake) and pumping his fist in victory (surreptitiously, of course) when she notes that he’s observant to notice she likes dduk.

True to Seung-yeon’s predictions, Jin-soo is unable to order Grandma to leave, and sits down at the table to grudgingly eat the spread she has laid out. While he tries to get this over with quickly, Granny asks questions about his life, all the while adding kimchi to his spoon with her fingers. At first, Jin-soo looks at the kimchi in disgust, and reluctantly eats it — but as she continues to pile on the kimchi, he starts to like the taste. It’s hilarious (and a little touching) how this has the effect of retrieving his appetite, and by the end of the conversation he’s scraping the bottom of his bowl and holding out his spoon to Grandma for filling.

Meanwhile, she chatters on, asking questions that he answers in brief replies. For instance, this apartment isn’t really his, although he lives here while writing. In fact, he doesn’t have a home of his own. His parents died when he was in university, so he spends all his time wandering from place to place.

Grandma clucks over that, but she doesn’t treat him with pity; she nags him about getting married, saying that it’s not good to be alone all the time. It’s the kind of thing your own grandmother says to you, nagging over how she thinks you ought to live your life, with the best intentions.

Grandma leaves after assuring Seung-yeon that Jin-soo ate lunch properly and is now resting. When Seung-yeon checks on him, he’s grumpy and accuses her of being crazy to thwart him so blatantly. However, he’s too tired to be angry properly and lies back in fatigue.

Seung-yeon isn’t fazed, knowing that she did everything for his own good, and asks him to call her whenever he’s sick or bored. Perhaps she understands now that he cuts himself off from everyone, not because he wants to but because even if he didn’t, he would still have nobody to turn to. Cutting people off first makes his loneliness his choice, and may be easier to deal with than wanting that company but not having it.

I doubt Seung-yeon understands all that in such clear terms, but she’s encroaching on that understanding, just a teeny bit. Jin-soo calls Seung-yeon arrogant for thinking she knows everything and says dryly that she’s grown up, but her offer to be there for him does make an impression on him.

That evening, Eun-young wraps up work and calls Jin-soo, wanting to drop by for a few minutes to talk. Jin-soo turns her down, acting normal and using the excuse that he’s busy, but she overrides him and says it’ll only be a moment.

Jin-soo doesn’t want her to know he’s sick — if she knew, it would clue her into his worry over her disappearance, and Jin-soo can’t let himself be that vulnerable, no way. So he pulls himself out of bed and cracks open the door to talk to Eun-young over the threshold, not letting her inside, citing work as his reason.

Eun-young takes this in stride, but admits that she felt bad to hear that he had been worried over her weekend disappearance. However, now she sees from his casual behavior that he hadn’t worried after all, and wonders, “I’m the one who was embarrassed and hurt — why are you avoiding me? That’s silly.”

Jin-soo blusters that he’s not avoiding her, then gets rid of Eun-young quickly before Seung-yeon arrives, carrying his prescriptions. He has ordered her to keep his condition a secret from Eun-young, so Seung-yeon hides the medication behind her back when she runs across Eun-young.

Ji-won has done some serious thinking of his own, and calls Eun-young to — finally! — offer her his apology for hurting her two years ago. It’s a little ridiculous that he hasn’t realized what he’d done until now, but now that he has, he’s sincerely regretful and tells her solemnly that he’s sorry. He even accepts 70% of the responsibility for their breakup, which he increases to 80%, then 90%, at her incredulous reaction.

Naturally, Eun-young finds him a little absurd, and cuts him off just as he starts to bring up her relationship with Jin-soo. Flatly, she tells him it was all a show to make him let go, and that Jin-soo’s going to leave soon. She’s going to start dating again (she uses the word mat-seon, which is a blind date undertaken with the intention of marriage). Bluntly, she tells Ji-won that in any case, he is forever out of her life, and hangs up.

I admire Eun-young’s professionalism and her mature personality, because rather than moping over Jin-soo or trying to force her way — hitherto the only two options to the kdrama heroine — she takes action. It’s not vindictive, or angry, but practical.

To that end, she contacts her lawyer and has him draw up a document canceling her contract with Jin-soo. Not only does this release him from her company, it is effective immediately, meaning that she exerts no claim over this book. Her employees are stunned, because to them, this has come out of left field and without explanation. But even though Jin-soo does understand her reason, he’s just as shocked to be handed the papers.

Jin-soo confronts Eun-young wearing a serious — dare I say a little stricken? — expression, and asks what this is all about. This is not welcome news to him, even though it puts him in a better situation than it does Eun-young, whose company would lose a lot more than he would at the loss of the contract.

Eun-young talks to Jin-soo wearing a serene expression, explaining that she has realized that his reason for writing is to repay his old debt to her. She doesn’t want to make money off that. She’d like to dissolve this contract to enable them to return to the way they were when they first met, and reminds him that Jin-soo had been the one to say that she’s a pro at returning to her original state (he means that she’s cool in the face of disruptions and struggles).

She reminds him of how they used to be before they’d become friends or business partners — back when they were acquaintances who conversed well and had fun when they found themselves in each other’s company. He had stuck to that line all these years — that line keeping them only friends — while she hadn’t, and now she wants to go back.

But this isn’t what Jin-soo wanted, or meant, and it’s written all over his face.

Eun-young continues her explanation, saying that it would be nice to go back to their closer friendship, to how they were before his birthday — and the kiss — but they can’t do that. She says that although Jin-soo would like her to be cool in moving on after it, she can’t, so this is the best she can do. (It’s one thing to reboot entirely, but it’s a lot harder to undo a big move like that and pretend it didn’t happen.) She regrets that, but what can you do?

Eun-young keeps that pleasant smile on her face as she parts ways with Jin-soo, but as she walks on, her face grows grimmer and grimmer and she becomes lost in thought, even missing the light for the crosswalk.

Jin-soo, trailing behind Eun-young, catches up to her at the intersection, where he asks in a subdued voice, “If you dump me, what will I write for? Why would I write?”

Eun-young’s gaze grows troubled, but she keeps her tone light as she jokes that he must be awfully content with his success to talk like that, and walks on.

When Jin-soo gets back to his studio, Eun-young’s employee hands him an invitation to a formal event, the International Peace Seoul Awards, asking if he will be in attendance. He figures that Jin-soo won’t want to go accept his award, but hesitantly requests a definite answer — they can’t deal with him agreeing to go and then skipping out again.

Of all the scenes in this episode, this is the one that gives me the most hope for Jin-soo, even though it’s the most mundane, uninteresting one. It’s a purely expository scene to set up the award, but Jin-soo’s response is telling — he looks at the invitation and wonders if going to the event will keep Eun-young from nulling their contract. He jokes that he doesn’t want to be “fired” by her.

Eun-young is surprised when Jin-soo joins her on the car ride to the award ceremony, and he keeps his tone casual as he says that he doesn’t want to get kicked out of his nice workshop: “Can’t we just continue like this? With a bit of awkwardness? Or is that being greedy?”

Jin-soo has spent most of the drama being the one in control, as I noted in the previous recap, so I love seeing him in the vulnerable position for once. It shows us that he does have feelings, even if he’s deathly afraid of them for the most part, and that some things — namely, Eun-young — are worth making a little effort over.

(At least, for now.)

Seung-yeon doesn’t know about the contract cancellation until the car ride over to the award ceremony. Hyun-joo fills her in, then wonders if something happened on Jin-soo’s birthday — up until then, everything had been going fine. Things started to get strange afterward, and Hyun-joo asks if Seung-yeon knows anything.

Seung-yeon does — she doesn’t know the full story, but she did witness the rooftop conversation — but isn’t in the place to divulge, so she deflects the question. Once at the venue, the team gets to work prepping Jin-soo and Eun-young for their parts in the ceremony.

Seung-yeon hesitantly broaches the topic of the contract cancellation with Jin-soo, but he shuts her down. She doesn’t press with him but can’t shake the feeling that this isn’t right, so she next seeks out Eun-young in her dressing room. Jin-soo briefly sees the two women talking on his way out, but doesn’t make much of it.

Seung-yeon tells Eun-young how much Jin-soo worried over her and how he’d taken a lot of sleeping pills. She can see that Jin-soo really cares for her, and worries that this contract cancellation is the product of a misunderstanding.

Eun-young’s eyes fill with tears at this revelation, and the proof that Jin-soo had been lying to her with his flippant remarks and blasé attitude. Both relieved at the truth and frustrated with Jin-soo’s mulishness, Eun-young sighs that Jin-soo’s always covering up the truth, and she’d never have been able to see the truth without Seung-yeon. She murmurs, half to herself, “Were things always a mess with us because we didn’t have a secretary?”

Eun-young thanks Seung-yeon earnestly for her help. Seung-yeon walks out feeling that she did the right thing, that she fulfilled her job as a good secretary, tamping down her personal disappointment (over the imminent reconciliation).

As Jin-soo waits just offstage in the wings, Eun-young comes up to him, now wearing a much softer expression. She grasps his hand — to his surprise — and tells him to do a good job.

When she pulls away, he finds a note in his hand. He opens it to read: “Let’s look for the answer together. Don’t struggle alone, please. I’m sorry for giving you a hard time without knowing you were sick.”

He’s puzzled, but Seung-yeon pops into view and gives him a “fighting” sign, for good luck. Now he starts to piece things together, and realizes that Seung-yeon told Eun-young the truth.

His sight starts to grow out of focus — his surroundings start to merge together in a blur, and the stage lights are blinding — while Jin-soo’s face hardens.

But we won’t know what he’s thinking for a few moments, and I like that the director keeps us at a distance — both physically and emotionally. As he walks onstage to accept his award, fading into the white wash of stage lights, we see him as Eun-young and Seung-yeon do — wanting to know what he’s thinking but only able to see the back of him.

For a moment I wondered if he’d run away again, but he gets through the entire night with nary a hitch, and afterward Seung-yeon gives him a cheery thumbs-up, bubbling over with happiness and excitement.

They’ve all been invited to a party afterward, but Jin-soo tells Seung-yeon to go home instead. When she asks why, he tells her plainly, “You’re fired.”

That wipes the smile off her face immediately, and she’s confused and uncomprehending. She asks why, and he rattles off his reasons in a barrage of matter-of-factness: She revealed something he entrusted her to keep secret, she meddled in his life with “delusions of grandeur,” she acted out of “childish pity,” she broke the trust that he could entrust her with any future secrets, and lastly, she smashed his hope that she might turn out to be a decent secretary after all.

He says all this without malice or even anger, but I suspect his detachment is what makes it even harder to comprehend. He leaves Seung-yeon in a daze and joins Eun-young in the limo as they head to the party.

Eun-young believes things are on the mend, so she’s startled to hear that he has just fired his secretary. He explains that he can’t have a secretary who lies, then clarifies that everything Seung-yeon just told Eun-young was a total, utter lie: “Don’t believe any of it.”

Frankly methinks he doth protest too much and I’m hoping Eun-young picks up on that, but for now she’s too stunned to have any reaction at all.

She looks a little lost as Jin-soo pulls out the documents and now agrees that she was right in wanting to sever their ties: “We’ve gone far enough, and I don’t think any good will come of us continuing to be linked together.” He’ll agree to her conditions.

With a return of his maddening smile, Jin-soo signs the papers, then requests that the limo driver pull over.

Telling Eun-young to have fun at the party, he gets out, leaving two very shell-shocked women in his wake.

COMMENTS

Despite some frustrating behavior by Jin-soo in this episode, I kind of love it. I love that Jin-soo is such a mess of contradictions, but with every layer that gets unpeeled, his complexities and neuroses all feel consistent with his character — they form a maddening but realistic person, and that’s one thing this drama does so well.

In the first half of this episode, I was thinking how very much Jin-soo needs this rude awakening — he needed to realize that you don’t know what you’ve got till you’ve lost it. When Eun-young is the one who wants to cut their relationship, he’s not quite desperate but he is very keen on restoring things. It’s like a prankster who pulls one joke too many and then hurries to explain, “I didn’t mean it! Really!”

But then the tables turn again, and he’s the recipient of Eun-young’s understanding — but worse, her pity. At first I wasn’t quite sure why he had such a violent reaction to this change in her behavior, because even if it’s a little embarrassing to be found out, you’d think he’d be happy to have a good thing on his side. But I believe that the primary operating force in this is his reaction to losing control. In fact, not only has he lost it, it’s been stolen from him secretly by his secretary, and he’s like this big ol’ contrarian who feels cornered and manipulated when things are out of his control.

I have this feeling that Jin-soo is so scarred from his ex-wife’s death that he no longer wants responsibility over ANYTHING in his life at all, which is why he rejects relationships, intimacy, and even a physical home. Autonomy is the only thing he’s got left, and he reacts like a feral animal when someone takes it away.

Plus, this is a recurring theme for Seung-yeon, so I’m frankly not surprised that he fired her. I was expecting it. Let’s be honest, she’s not a good secretary. She’s a decent person, but a pretty lousy secretary. Think of all those dramas with that evil mastermind (East of Eden, Cinderella’s Sister) — and think of his evil henchman. That secretary is the Evil Boss’s secretary because he does every single thing his master requires, and he does it efficiently and without moral posturing. That’s why they’re the best.

Seung-yeon, on the other hand? She’s like the secretary you would send to your enemy — the MVP for the opposing team, if you will. She has been getting a bit big for her britches — for instance, the scene when she hangs up on Jin-soo by faking a bad connection — and pride, as they say, cometh before a fall.

Not that I think he is worthy of any relationship at the moment, but if this show switches and focuses on the JS/SY relationship I will quit watching. I don't understand why people like watching girls who are basically still children enter into relationships with a much older man. How old are they all supposed to be anyways? I am in my early twenties and I would never consider dating a man over 30. This is not because age ain't nothin but a number, but because you have fundamentally different interests and goals during those two very different stages of life. Besides, my brother is 30 and my cousins are near the same age, and I am pretty sure if I dated someone older than them there would be hell to raise. Also, all this SY girl does is give herself and all of her efforts to JS. Yes, she is his employee, but she also seems more like the stereotypical k-drama girl who is generally unselfish and will take any verbal or emotional beating and keep coming back for more. While EY may not be perfect, I love that she gives viewers a more realistic character and girls a much stronger female influence. Seriously, females in Korea need better women role models, and k-dramas do not help this at all.

That mini-rant turned out a bit longer than I had originally intended, but I must have kept these feelings about k-dramas bottled up inside for a while. Needless to say, I am tired of the young innocent girl-older man combination. End of story.

I'm so glad the contract has ended. It's about time, Eun-Young moves on. It would be great if she has a new love interest soon. If Jin-soo wants to alone so much, let him. Let's see how long he survive on his own before cracking.

Javabeans, you are SUCH a killjoy! Jin-soo's "prescriptions (I looked them up) are for insomnia and fatigue."

Hahahaha! I had been starting to work myself into a tizzy, imagining all manner of exciting physical -- and mental! -- illnesses, that Jin-soo might have. Maybe he was losing the plot and was about to go crazy and murder both women, due to the his taking off his glasses all evil-like at the end of the episode. Maybe he was going to die of congenital heart disease! Maybe ... No. Just a nice bit of insomnia and fatigue. Killjoy. Destroyer of dreams.

@ 36 pipit : Now THIS is the Pipit I know and admire. Epic post, my dear! I've only read half of it, but I'll be back for the rest later!

I'll post more later. Thanks for the recap, JB!

@52 Penn

I will be surprised if JS goes a day w/o EY at this point in the drama. My opionion is based purely on what happened in epi 9. He knows what it is like to suffer when the most important person in his life disappears. EY disappeared and he does not want a repeat of his heart trembling and giving out on him....particularly since they have unfinished business where he cannot allow her to drop him and treat him like a----stranger. How can she?...in his mind. They have too much vested in each other's life [well ,he does apparently].

So he will want to reach out in the guise of business, but in actuality it is to keep tabs on her comings and goings to come back into the fold. It's a JS ruse. I want to know if this is used, did he actually sign his name on the contract breaking their professional relationship, which gives way to another relationship.??? Either way will be telling based on his upcoming actions or antics.

The screws are turning the opposite direction to release what is locked up in his heart.

Just thought I would add in a few comments here, it seems like a number of people's hating on Seung Yeon. Actually I feel that Eun Jung actually potrays the character well - Seung Yeon is supposed to be your average naive girl in typical KDramas (and this is obviously so when she says she is more interested in relationships between people instead of her professionalism, which is why she wants to help mend JS and EY's relationship although it caused an adverse effect instead), and so far her acting does some merit for her. Well, at least she successfully convinced me that she is kind of reckless and doesn't think that much.

In fact, until now I still ship the JS/SY couple even though currently it's only a one-sided love/like relationship. I feel that although the JS/EY couple line is more visible for now, but I think it should be noted that JS and EY had too much of a traumatic experience between them. If the story were to focus on that, CH would probably end up turning into a melodrama where the both of them try to overcome the loss of JS' wife. Plus, the relationship and impact of Ha Ji Won on JS/EY. I mean, he is not the 2nd male lead for no reason, since he has "ended" (or so he says) his relationship with EY, it is highly possible that:

1) JW attempts to foil their relationship by spamming them with the "JS' wife has died" tragedy
2) He still tries to win back EY, but with a nicer tactic this time

*SPOILERS*
Also, one of the comments did bring up the point that JS will try to pair DW with SY, but my guess is that it will fail. Sure, they will go out for a few times with DW attempting to win SY over, but given DW's amount of air time in each episode, I highly doubt that this will work out (although it's just what I think). DW's character is just too typical of kdrama romance genres where:

Female lead is depressed over her one-sided love -> Ta-da! A random guy who happens to like her since a long time appears -> Random guy attempts to woo her, and female lead accepts because she thinks she needs a change -> Newly formed couple decides to go out for a few times, but female lead realises that she still likes the male lead the most -> Random guy realises it but still hangs on to her desperately -> After a series of events, random guy lets go of her with a smile

In this case, it is also a possible scenario that in the middle of pairing these two people up, JS might realise SY's importance to him (whether as a love potential, or just a friend who know him really well). And also, it is obvious that until now, she still doesn't really feel anything for DW as yet. Which means, even if SY and JS don't end up together, SY wouldn't end up with DW as well. Who knows, maybe she'd be the previous EY who was simply a close friend to JS.

Just my 5-cents' worth of thoughts, no offence to any JS/EY shippers though. (:

I worry about PSY, too. :-( If she decides to discontinue, I hope the writer has a convincing alternative. I don't want them to force 2 characters together if it weren't in the original script, if that happens it must be very believable, I don't really have a problem with that. But like I said before, I don't mind an open ended finale.

I loved this episode! Many people are getting frustrated with Jin Soo's character but I absolutely love it! Now, I can't wait until he realizes that he's going to lose the one woman that cares the most for him. Fighting EY and JS!

On a side note, I hope that Park Shi Yeon is doing well. I can tell she is having a hard time with Park Yong Ha's death and the pictures everywhere of her at the wake and funeral isn't good. Stay strong!

...first of all I've loved PSY since A Man's Story/Slingshot. She had been in Bittersweet Love and had a challenging role as a woman used by two warring men in AMS. She did very well in that... And there she worked with Park Yong Ha--- I loved him in that drama. There were so many strong characters there.. It was one great show but sad to know PKH's end--may he rest in peace and our PSY be able to come out with a STRONG spirit...

@36 pipit---AWESOME!!!! Love your take---JS's self preservation and self sacrifice-and deep anguish to stay beside his BFF-EY. I hope the PDs can redeem JS's character. 'am so torn with JS's self preservation mode by burning bridges and setting himself up for more hurt and guilt by turning away these two women who deeply care for who else but him...

Is EY doing exactly what JS is doing or learning JS's methods in escaping to Japan to deal with JS's rejection of her/EY's advances? Was EY's trying to convince her ex
she wasn't ineterested anymore a way to get JS to reveal his-JS's feelings for EY? Hmmm..Have these two (JS and EY) crossed wires in that they love each other but are scared don't want to rock the boat by revealing that romantic vs the BFF type of love....???? So to keep the other from getting "turned off" if found out how one romantically loves the other, JS and EY have a boss-client relationship. They keep a distance but close enough to still be freely in touch with the other. What a neurotic relationship if this truly how they feel. I don't know... I feel JS and EY mirrored the other's emotion and behavior. Sooo the "secretary" is a buffer or filter that only allows in what is important or acceptable for JS and EY who don't want to be hurt. What either JS and EY cannot openly do, the secretary does for them instead. Sooo as I agree with many SY revealing to EY JS's behavior while EY was in Japan brought down that buffer/filter that hid JS's true feelings... And so SY is fired...

Thanks Sarahbeans, as always an entertaining read with truly many intelligent discussions... 'Can't wait 'til the next recap... Who ends up with who, only the PDs know....

I hope PSY could overcome the death of Park Yung ha. Well, I have the same experience like her; best friend commited suicide because of depression. At first, it was a total shock and disbelieve but now, it is more of regreting of not knowing my best friend's suffering and why my best friend didn't try to talk to us at all.

Like JB said, JinSoo's character quite similar to Park Yung Ha's, having insomnia and all, it's a quite hard for PSY. Maybe it sound cold but I hope she could vent all her frustation into her acting; she might understand EY's character better, having a best friend who has depression coz I think we'll see JS and EY's past later.

Some people said that depression is like walking in a very dark tunnel; if they can't find even a slightest light to grab on, they can't find a strength to live on even to pass a day is too much difficult for them; that's why they have tendency to think of commiting suicide. Heheh, I think EY is the light that JS saw at that time. Whatever JS do in the future, EY still has a big place in JS heart, no one could replace her.

Regardless of rating i like Coffee house , Giant , Road number one and Comrades .
Dong Yi has high rating but i find it boring , unrealistic , unbelievable , nobody can achieve great tasks by himself , in this drama they make DY so smart thenThe,King and all men there are so dump, DY and Lady Jang should be the Queens to rule the country not the King . Royal families
are the most dysfuntional families , always plotting to harm each other , greedy for power . The King is busy to deal with his concubines , i wonder if he has time to take care of his country , his people .

The spoiler that says JS will try to get SY and DW together, is it coming from a reliable source such as the PD team/writer or just viewer shared their opinion in the forum?.

Other thought of why JS ends the contract and fired his secretary could be because he wants to do some thinking and need a break from these two woman. He needs time to refresh himself, free himself, make peace with himself. throw his baggage, and finally could face EY and offers a new start. Or is it just my wish?

I am JS/EY shipper, and I believe PSY will continue filming. She is a professional and I am sure the film crew will give her much support needed. I hope she can pour her emotion in her act. Fighting PSY.

Bravo! Very well said! It's exactly what I think too! But the way you said/narrated/wrote it just struck me so hard and I cried. :(

Can I share/repost your comment in my blog or you can re-post it on yours, either way it'll be easier to track down and re-read?

Love, love your comment a lot!

I find it somewhat unrealistic at this point for the story to switch over to JS/SY, as others have said. But then again, there are six episodes left. We are just past the halfway mark. Who's to say they can't? I strongly believe the crew can pull it off, seeing as they've been able to accomplish pretty much anything else up til now.

Of course, that doesn't mean I would like it, but I still think it is too soon to assume that JS/EY is the main pairing. Still though, I would definitely be unhappy as a viewer if they switched to JS/SY because like everyone else (or mostly everyone else) I'm sure, I've already been invested emotionally in JS/EY and now I REALLY want them to end up together.

Though actually, maybe a part of that is because I also don't want JS to end up with SY. There are a number of reasons for this, the most shallow being that I dislike Ham Eun-jung's acting. (I agree with anyone who found her run annoying; she runs so preciously.) Another is kind of in line with the age argument, but I don't think that should be a huge issue. But I do argue that their perspectives of life are maybe too different for them to make a go at the world as a couple. Even without Seung-yeon's mind numbing naivete, I think that Jin-soo is really too jaded to take anything Seung-yeon says or does seriously as a romantic equal. Others would say that Seung-yeon's 'lightness' is what he needs in his life, but 'lightness' only goes so far, in my opinion.

Here's how I see it playing out; in the end Seung-yeon will have made a go at confessing her feelings, but will ultimately be rejected in the end. Dong-wook will be there, of course, waiting in the wings as usual, but now Seung-yeon will probably see him in a completely different light that she did before (at this point I think all her feelings amount to is superficial interest. She's aware (somewhat) that he likes her, but at the moment she's far too preoccupied with Jin-soo to take much notice). Honestly I cannot make a prediction on how Jin-soo and Eun-young will end up (though @pipit, your post was tremendous and admirable!), I can only hope that the drama can manage a realistic and believable ending.

Thanks for the recap, as usual! 8D

The dumb girl mannerisms have turned me so off, the walk, the run the stare, she is supposed to be naive, not 10 yrs old! And why would an intellectual man find that

^^ That ok for us SY/JS shippers that Javabeans choose EY/JS shipping.
The only thing we can do is analyse and keep hope. Again PD said that is alike a sitcom. Sitcom normaly never end with the girl you think the lead going end. So we going to watch episode 11 and 12 and let's see what direction PD will choose. Specially episode 12.

Again, that true we don't have a scene that JS fall for SY. I'm agree with you all because we also didn't find that JS choose SY yet. But we do find a lot scene that can make them growing and change to another level relationship.

JS and EY relationship
We still have 6 or 8 episodes to watch until August 2 ''I'm a Legend'' airing...
If they make Coffee House 20 episode...all possibility we can have for EY/JS shipper and SY/JS shippers ..

But because the poor rating, i hope is ok o.o for Coffee House...
Why we do have a so much poor rating for Coffee House...it's because we have so much debate for the OTP so all ajummas doesn't care anymore about Coffee House and turn to Baker serie [personaly again LOL i love Eugene but i didn't ship for her ...i'm going to ship for the other girl ^^]. Or because they don't like what going on with the story..or they shipping for each girls so they don't like the direction that going....hmm.. I LOVE COFFEE HOUSE !!

In Coffee House, can someone tell me something, because i need to rewatch all episode again to find this...
From my friend, she said the real lead in Kdrama is the one who have a same color clothes ....ONE color in particuliar in the two lead who going end together ...mean they will END together ...

Seriously after i watch and rewatch o.o ONLY the blue, black or white seem to match with JS, EY and SY ...so something is wrong again?

One particular color ...hm...

Again thank for the recap Javabeans ^^ don't worry ..we SY/JS shippers like your recap so it's ok you choose your clan.

For us is still SY/JS Hwaiting until the end ^^

I think this is more about Jin-Soo's intricate brains these days (and all the things it causes) than actual romance development. He sort of trashed his chances of coupling up with either Seo Eun-Young or Kang Seung-Yeon.

btw o.o now i'm thinking is completely go in a same line with Oishii Kankei manga o.o http://www.onemanga.com/Oishii_Kankei/
I finish to read it ..the raw also and it's seem a same
I mean the relationship ...

One is a stupid, lovely girl vs the rich and business woman ...
the business woman win .....until the lead guy ....find that ...he already fall for the stupid girl ..

same relationship because the lead guy is also a teacher to the stupid girl....

Ok i'm manga manhwa manhua collectors so ...so i do have a idea like that
But again THAT is only again a speculation.

Oishii Kankei ...not the jdorama [jdrama] and also not the taiwanese version Sweet Relationship with Zaizai...but the manga version ...have more plot story ...

I don't think the story would be suddenly shifting to SY should it go that way. I think again, it has been slowly set up from almost the beginning.

Even while in the last few episodes the the focus mostly on JS/EY, there were still some set up for JS/SY later.

Which is why it wouldn't be a sudden shift. But I do think it would have to be more focused on JS/SY. But at the same time, it doesn't mean JS/EY wouldn't also be dealt with.

Whatever happens, I hope the writers stick to their original storyline, plan and ending.

I don't like JS' wishy washy attitude. One moment he seems firm being a prick living by his rule, then one moment want to surrender to EY's games to latch on to this ship, and then he turns into that typical jerk once someone else gets a hold of his weakness so he rebels.

What will I do w/o drama? pahehe~

I really do not know who end with who, but I really think the two most are backing are just to much of the same kind to make a couple, even with out the emotional baggage dating your dead ex wife best friend. As I see it only the little secretary and her family can help him get over his troubles, his lady friend, they just share the pain together and cover up real feeling with false faces. While she did help him stay alive, she really can not seem to get through enough to make him change his ways.
The dumb/simple/pure girl in Korean dramas is the one that always shows the jerk guy the way of changing and saving himself.

Arg! my wrong understand again ...oh ^^;;;;;
I do sense Javabeans be with EY/JS shippers that all and that ok ^^
This is my first shipping so hard for a drama + a kdrama ...
Well if Javabeans see the drama Coffee House like that ...i will try to see like her and analyse with my idea ...
Sure, i don't be agree with some writing from Javabeans but in other side ..i'm try to clean my head and try to see what Javabeans see...

I'm agree that EunJung was running strange and funny ^^ but maybe is PD ask her to running like that...EunJung seem to have a mission in this serie...we still dunno...
If her missing is really to make EY and JS become a couple...it's will be sad for SY because JS would know for sure her feeling for him.
If people said she will end with DW, it's seem impossible for now, i mean SY don't love DW. She care him like a friends...

For everyone ^=^
Also people who said Kang Ji Hwan is old so he will become a pedo if he end with SY ...
Again ''sigh'' DW and JS actor real age is a proximative a same age ^^ ...DW actor is 3 year younger than JS actor ...so DW will become also a pedo if he end with SY ? come on ..it's a drama ...if you want to watch something like i do find a pedo ...
Lakorn serie Preuka Sawad ...o.o the lead guy is like 50 YEAR OLD and the lead girl is like 20 year old O.O this is a real PEDO serie ...and they END together ..spoiler ^^;;; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTO5z4ALtpM
is ok ...the serie was good lucky ..but omg i was like this actor is still acting like a lead actor ...o.o

@pipit

I had to make a title for your comment so I made up this one...
Coffee House: A Tale of the EunSoo Ship
Here's the link: http://wp.me/pMVQn-en

Hope you don't mind. :)

@javabeans

" I love that Jin-soo is such a mess of contradictions, but with every layer that gets unpeeled, his complexities and neuroses all feel consistent with his character — they form a maddening but realistic person, and that’s one thing this drama does so well."

It's so true and I love KJH's portrayal of JS! It's like outwardly he somehow manages to look normal (albeit the OCD quirkiness) yet in some way you can feel the depth of the hurt and the burden he's keeping inside.

"Seung-yeon, on the other hand? She’s like the secretary you would send to your enemy — the MVP for the opposing team, if you will."

Now, this one made me laugh. Hahaha!

@pipit

Although your scenario is very touching and romantic, I quite frankly cannot stomach such a situation. When did it become alright to hurt other people in the process of validating your own love? I'm not sure why eunsoo shippers would even encourage this situation. From EY's view it's incredibly romantic, and touching, but from HS'? Her whole life was a sham...and this undeniably makes JS unattractive in my eyes. If EY were really HS' best friend, then she would be right in rejecting JS' long time love. On the other if EY and HS weren't as close to each other, but rather EY and JS were best friends, I would wholly support your theory.

A little side note:

I agree eunjung's running is a little weird..no one would run like that in real life..but I think it may have been the director's fault? I also noticed that EY's tends to waddle...both in this episode when she walks up to him backstage, and that the end of episode 6 when she comes out of her building. I would expect her to walk the walk as a model, but I'm guessing again the director had something to do with it?

I love coming here and reading people's interpretation of what the last scene meant. The possibilities are endless, and it's what I love about CH. I get what JB is trying to say about SY being a poor 'secretary'. On the other hand, I think JS is equally guilty for misleading the poor girl into this state by constantly blurring the professional line for her. She didn't know what she was getting into, and neither did he but I think he should've been sharp enough to figure that out when he hired her so idk what he was expecting out of her. It just seemed like JS tantrum to me, he couldn't get his way so screw everyone else.

And no offense but pipit's 'theory' sounds like a sappy JS-EY fanfic than what some of you called an analysis. But it just shows how passionate you gals are when it comes to your kdramas. Great stuff :)

I do agree with you. I feel that JS is really and deeply in love with EY, But until this ep10, I do think that although they love each other so much, their love relationship may be too heavy for both of them( specially EY). At the end, it's a matter of who will let go first unless JS is able to let go of what ever he kept inside.

It is possible for SY shipper based on JS(and the writer) unpredictable behavior. I think JS should try with SY ( and EY with a new guy) but I'm afraid that it will all come back to the same story with his ex-wife, where he loved another but this time when he looks around only to find EY with another man for real this time.

I think it is possible the writer will leave the ending just as confusing, and we will end up arguing again what 's the meaning at the end. Said this because it's what this writer has done so far. Let's not hope for the clear ending because that's the way to save our heart.
Thanks JB, for your recap.

I just finished watching episode 10, and I have to say I have no idea where this drama is heading. This is saying a lot given the fact that Asian dramas, especially K-drama tend to be formula based: making it possible for the audience to predict the actions of the characters to a certain extent. However with CH house I really find myself wondering where the writer will take us next: Will LJS disappear for a few years, to searching for whatever answers, or maybe questions which at this point still elude him. In that case when LJS returns what will he find.

Maybe a natural SY who has work hard to turn herself into a pro-secretary in order to put back together the million pieces of LJS' disappointment.

What of EY, will she finally be in a stable relationship with a guy who is the middle ground for HJ delusion egotistical-selfishness and LJS isolationist self-destruction.

Maybe the writers will just throwaway the script and make K-drama history by having EY and SY turn to each other for comfort, now that would be a twist.

Whats to come next for CH, I'm both excited and scared of finding out.

@ Pipit:
I have some similar thougts
But you make it so clear and total understandable , even for a complicated charactrer like JS!!!
Well-done!!!!
-----------------------------------------------------
I dont know if JS s 'ever loved his wife, but it does seem like his memory toward her is about guilt, and scare.
And if Js doesn't love EY, honestly, he will not able to love anyone else, based on his conficted and complicated personality, characteristic, and past memory.
SY may be fresh and light breath into his life. But I doubt that she could handle his heavy soul. Not to metion, she wont be able to read and get along with him and all his behaviors , as she may appears to know him!!!
Apposite attract may work with a young, naive, free-spirit, light heart love; but a broken soul might only live on with his soul-mate companion, whose has been there for him in good times , bad times, and ugly times.
I guess some was right about.. It's not romantic love.
THERE RELATIONSHIP IS BEYOND ROMATIC LOVE!!!!
-------------------------------------------------------
@ lapchick:
It may not make sense to you this but this is the charater JS that we talking about. He is a damaged guy!!!! And his beief is his love 'd hurt her more if she found out the truth. So he 'd rather she hurt a little now and move on THAN she get hurt every time she looks at him...
And as if Pipit 's hypothesis was true, it was never EY fault to hurt HS!!! And hasn't JS been suffering all these year with his guilt? The situation is realistic here - like people found out that they wasn't in love after then got married. You can see it happens everywhere around you. In this case ( since it 's a drama) the situation got more dramatic as she died after their divorce
And the past is the past!!!!
One couldnt do anything about it, but accept, learn and move on with life.
But could JS put his guilt down, open his hear once again, move on, and BE HAPPY with his life? What does it take for him to do that? or Who has the abitity to do that? -------- I think we all have different answers here--------------
But up to this point, Could you find anything/ anyone that JS truly/ deeply care about beside EY? Perharp his secret/ pride, while he didn't really care about his life when he attempted to throw it away along time ago. His wall is mighty high and he 'd never allow himself to attach with anyone/anything that come accross his life
Therefore, I cant see how SY be a part of his passion either, give the time and all interation they had
**Btw, Was HS 's death cause by an accident or a suiside commiting?*****
( It wasnt clear for me) ^^;;

@51 kkstar
Regarding the age factor -- If you watched and enjoyed Cinderella's Sister, the age difference between the 2 male and female leads is similar to that of Jin-Soo and Seung-Yeon. Moon Geun Young and Ham Eun Jung are both in their early 20's (23 and 21 respectively - Actually, MGY only just turned 23) and the age is similar with the leading men: Chun Jung Myung, who turns 30 this year, and Kang Ji Hwan who just turned 33. There you have it: early 20's women and 30's men.

It's really a big stretch to call it pedophila, as some have been. The gap between Keira Knightly and her Mr. Darcy was a greater gap. And to add to that, she was only a mere 19 when she filmed Pride and Prejudice.

My point in commenting on the age issue is this: Do you (meaning everyeone who's complained about Jin-Soo and Seung-Yeon's age difference) really think it's pedophilia or do you just bring it up because you're against the JS/ SY pair up? Something to consider....

@ 94 KT:
Funnily enough, it's the Kpop sites (like allkpop) that say EJ is prettier than SY, because they want a Seungyeon/Jinsoo pairing.

Like, the younger people in those sites are more familiar with EunJung and are her fans and that's why they say she's prettier.

But if you go on drama sites, most of the people in them are in favor of Park Si Yeon :) I think at least 1 person has mentioned PSY's prettiness on every Coffee House on this site so far ;)

@ 92 mimi:
CJM has a baby face and was depicted as a guy who was in his late 20s. They also dressed MGY in a way that made her look older. She was "26" in CS. And as for Pride & Prejudice, the setting of the story took place in the 17th-18th century, where it was considerably normal for a very young lady to marry a very old man.

In Coffee House, Seungyeon is probably in her early twenties and has the mentality of a teenager. Jinsoo is about 10 years older, which is probably why people say that he would be a pedophile to pursue Seungyeon. Their real age difference is not the problem. The problem is their age difference & maturity levels in the drama. Jinsoo is older than Seungyeon in many ways.

Now, if Seungyeon's character was like Go Ara's in Who Are You, I doubt the viewers would have a problem. Young In and Seung Hyo also had a huge age difference but were compatible because of their personalities.

I think some EY/JS shippers use the gap age for SY/JS couple because they can't stand to see SY/JS become a couple ''sigh'' or can't stand T-ara or just can't stand to EunJung

Like i explain in my other post to everyone

EunJung Characters Seung Yeon is 25 year old
KJH character Jin Soo is 32 year old
PSY character EY is 31 year old
JW character is 36 year old

so why some people still use this to defence EY/JS couple. It's just no sense to me....

To Everyone ^=^

check here ..
i'm currently watch Shen Yi Da Dao Gong serie http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Shen_Yi_Da_Dao_Gong

Adam Cheng actor who is the lead in this serie BORN 1947
The lead girl Chen Jia jia born 1985

so...why everyone still use this to attack SY/JS couple ^^;;;;
UNLESS YOU ALL SAID ...KJH IS OLD O.O
no way he so cute!! KJH aka JS isn't old at all!!!

Also, yes i'm agree with PSY is beautiful ^^ but if you want to see the old PSY ...i'm sure you don't know her at all
EunJung is ok ..not like PSY beautiful like her ..she just normal. I'm not into a girl but well we need a guy to said the answer for this question. ^__^
that only my two cent ^^

ps: LOL ok i'm probably really addict to Coffee House ...just go in EunJung Twitter to know more spoiler for Coffee House LOL she only post some picture ''cry'' i want some spoiler for episode 11 and 12 LOL

Ok...return to watch Shen Yi Da Dao Gong [i love wuxia or fantasy serie....]

@ mimi: the age may not be an issue but the vibe from the charaters and personalities.... just wasn't CLICK ( in romatic espect)

In CS, the two lead have a lot of similarity in common ground, history, and their way of thinking, which you can find the similarities in EunSoo in CH

But it's not the case for SY and JS.
Again, This could be my personal tase ( not the drama, btw ^^). In many of your opposite, I can’t feel the romantic vibe/ chemistry between SY –JS at all. Like None!!! Nor I could imagine them doing intimate exchange between lovers like kissing ,or cuddling.
It ‘s just very...... ODD!!!
***************************
It’s individual choice, but I believe people who watch CH , are all enjoy comedy and laughter. However our value and preference of LOVE are various based on age, nationality, background, personal experience ,interest, personality, drama background as well… PersonaIly, don’t think a guy like JS ‘d bring happiness to SY, neither could she. It’s not about age but common ground, experiences, and personality.
Beside the all other reasons that make me an EunSoo-er, EY and JS are not only IN THE SAME RANK but also have mutual RESPECT for each other . And this is what SY-JS LACK
PROOF: No matter how mad JS is, he never YELLED, or messed around with EY for his interest. He even went extra mile to make her happy and pleased!!!

Respect may not be a big issue when we are new in the relationship but it bonds to companionship to maintain marriage life/ long term commitmnet -which JS NEEDS
With the way he has been treating SY, I always have a hard time to comprehend why people want them to be together. Is it cute and funny to look at JS abused, messed around , made fun and laughed at SY for all SY shippers?
Maybe I have a soft heart that I couldn’t stand her being treat that way.
Is it how you like to be treat as a woman? or in a realation ship?

They ‘d eventually break up if they ever get together at one point ( realisticly speacking- I am not BIAS).
There are more( and I can go on and on) but I use 1 characteristic of each today.
* Stubborn SY and control-freak JS CAN ONLY tolerate so much together: She may think she knows him but she doesn't and JS is not going to sit there and allow her to do what she wants. He got to have everything 's done his way!!!
EXAMPLE:: When EY ignored his birthday; SY insisted him to have a party (3 times), which
(1) drove him away, (2) got him to embarassing and nervous situation facing EY. With his personality, how many times do you think he could let 's her slide?

More than anyone, they give me a vibe of siblings, brother to sister, master and assistant, adult and teenager, … Or Tom and Jerry, that’s kind of relationship.

I know that even though we watching the same show , but our perception could be completely different, base on individual belief, value and prefrennce .
This, perharps, makes CH even more special and intersting to enjoy^^

In japanese serie, be lolicon is normal ...must to said the term lolicon is normal ^^
SY can become a couple if she mature ? ok then hope she would change in a future episode....a bit ....

About the maturity is ok ...the gap is large for now ^^
but for some people who use ''PEDO'' ...a bit strong ...

that mean they talk about the age gap....''sigh''

It's not about what the drama can't do or won't do...but like Kay says, it's about personal preference (otherwise there wouldn't be shipping wars). Frankly, I want to puke when I see some 60 year old guy being paired up with a 20 yr old--but it may be another person's cup of tea. Some people enjoy dating people who are double their age or their parents age...others find it disturbing. Even in K-drama land, some folks enjoy the psudo-incest love relationships while others throw their hands in the air wondering what's wrong with these people.
