Dennis Oh in Jaebum’s Hype Nation

Dennis Oh (whose full name is Dennis O’Neil) had been a part of dance-themed film project Hype Nation back in earlier casting days when it had starred singer Sohn Dam-bi. However, she has since dropped out and the film has brought onboard a new cast, so I’d figured everyone would be replaced. But now Dennis Oh has been confirmed for the project (again), and plays rival to its lead, played by ex-2PM leader Jay Park (aka Jaebum).

Jaebum plays a member of a b-boy group that goes up against an American group (B2K). Dennis’ character is named Tony Kane (Cane?) and basically harasses Jaebum’s character; he’s a gambler and member of a money-laundering operation.

Also cast is Japanese actor Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as gang boss, and taking a leading female role is T-ae, a member of the new kpop girl group Rania. The movie will be directed by Christian Strickland and has a production budget of 25 million dollars.

Hype Nation began filming on June 20 and is currently shooting in Korea. Dennis Oh, who has had small roles in U.S. drama series Forgotten and Melrose Place in the past year, will return to Korea in mid-July to join filming. This will be his first acting project in Korea since 2008’s East of Eden.

Frankly I am utterly uninterested in the movie, but I’ll be curious to see whether this American co-production will prove to be successful. As for Dennis himself… well, he seems like a super nice guy. And I did respect that he actually made a big effort to act in Witch Amusement entirely in Korean, which can’t have been easy for him. On the other hand, I’ve yet to find his acting passable in any of his roles; he’s extremely pretty, but incredibly wooden and out of sync when he acts; it’s like he forgets to be IN the moment and just works hard at delivering dialogue. Maybe he’ll do better in English-speaking roles?

Another upcoming project he’s got planned is the Chinese remake of Autumn Fairy Tale, in which he plays the character originated by Won Bin. Wait, WHAT? Now THAT is much more interesting news to me! Off to dig up more details…….

The movie will probably bring in a lot of money, none of the other people have seen the Step Up movies if they had they would know this movie can't be any worse.
Peace!

East of Eden déjà vu? When will Dennis Oh learn to grow out of such pigeon hole characters? He's a uber nice guy so I'm just saying I wish better things happen for him.

Man, this sounds like a baaaaaaaaaad movie. Dennis Oh is the Korean equivalent of Keanu Reaves but less famous pretty to look at but man, oh man, "acting" is painful to watch. He should really stick to non-speaking roles.

I hate to say this, but I really don't think he us a good actor. His acting skills does not impress me at all. He is eye candy, but I think that's all he is for now. I hope with this new role, he will make me eat my words...

I think the acting will be unbearable :/
Seems that dennis acting isn't good and i don't think the other 2 leads have acting experience.
Jaebum is getting overrated.

If people can't stand Dennis Oh acting , how can you stand jaebum acting when he don't even have experience.

I don't know how I feel about this movie just yet. I like Jay a lot but acting? Hm I'm not sure what to expect and I'm not sure I want to be let down.
Dennis Oh is no doubt eye candy but he isn't a strong actor quite yet. But maybe since the last time we saw him, he was transformed? At least I hope so.

Dennis Oh was in the recent now defunct Melrose Place?? Wow I could have sworn I didn't see him, but then again as painful as it was to watch MP I still stuck through it. Even though I was half paying attention to the series. He might do better w/ an English speaking role though, who knows.

btw B2K....wow they're still around?? I totally thought they broke up some years ago.

I think this movie might do well in Korea and some countries of Asia because Jaebeom has a loyal fanbase and it's his comeback and there will probably be a lot of buzz about it. Outside of Asia it might not be box-office hit (it might be straight-to-dvd), but it could get some buzz between dance fans just like Step Up movies and other dance movies.

I'm not expecting the movie to have great script and great acting (most dance movies aren't well recieved by film critics, even Flashdance didn't got good reviews when it was released) so as long as the movie is entertaining (even in a guilty-pleasure way) and have good dance sequences it's okay.

I really hope this movie does well because I like Jaebeom. In fact, I'm rooting for Jaebeom's sucess because he's an example of a celeb that despite criticisms and hate, has been doing his best to stay strong and overcome the hardships he faced. In a country like S.Korea with many cases of celebs suiciding, it's good to have an example of a celeb that is not afraid of facing hardships and decide to stay strong, move on and try to overcome the hardships. So I really hope Jaebeom is sucessful to prove to everyone in Korea, that despite what people say, a person should never give up on your dreams.

Ohhhh, Dennis Oh...

It's you I have to thank for introducing me to Kdramas. You are a beautiful man, but please, rise a couple of stratas in the acting department. That would make my day!

I've never heard of Jaebum (I know, I live in a far off planet), but if he's as good at dancing as everyone says, I'm there.

Is this going to be in theaters stateside or is it going to end up as a straight-to-DVD movie? because while i personally feel this production is a joke, even step up and other bad movies about dancers ended up in theaters so...

Maria, I agree with you 100% on everything. I am so glad that he has pushed through the hardship and is trying to make a name for himself. I give him credit for this . . .

The fangirls will flock to the the movies because of Jay, whether in S.Korea or the USA (if it's released here). Ever heard of the JAYEFFECT? But I do fear that dance movies do not bring in a big box office draw and this like many others will just break even.

As for the remake of "Autumn in my heart" with Dennis Oh:

It will begin filming in August in the city of Qingdao and will air early Spring on Hunan TV. The second male lead actor has already been decided to be Korean actor Dennis Oh, and Meteor Shower lead Zhang Han will play the lead male.

According to Mango Films' advertising manager, the drama is not a pure remake. While the story is similar, there will be added elements to make the drama more fashionable and cosmopolitan, and new characters will insure the drama will not be too heavy.

Please not O___O No Autumn Tale remake!!! D: Urgh. All that drama was was dramatic, for the most part...no, okay, it had cute moments, but...X_X' Well, I just know I'm going to stay miles away from it!!!!

About the movie...um, I don't know, if I'm ever bored, I might watch it, as it sounds like it could be entertaining in some way, though probably not very good or meaningful, which I can't say for sure, though XD But those dance movies usually just have some moral that is presented weirdly, and the rest is dancing and strange dialogue : )

I'm watching this for Jaebum and please don't judge his acting experience you haven't seen it yet. Jay takes criticism well so he will improve over time. Everyone has to start somewhere right?
Dennis Oh might not be the A list actor out there but he's not the lead actor. We should not assume anything until the movie is out, or at least when the trailer is out.

Two people have compared Dennis Oh's acting to Keanu Reeves, are you people on drugs or something? I will be the first one to admit that my baby (Keanu) has issues with showing facial expressions but he has had tons of movies that were awesome and his acting was on point. Sorry but I've been in love with that man since I was 11 and no one compares him to a horrible actor. Sorry Dennis but it is true, love your face though. Rant over I feel better now

I feel like there's been talk abt Hype Nation for quite some time...when will the movie really come out???

And I agree with you abt Dennis Oh seeming just so nice...I wonder if he can get out of that image. His acting is pretty bland...but I hope he's been improving himself. I also respect him for speaking korean in Witch Amusement even though it must have been uncomfortable for him to act and speak a language he isn't that familiar with at the same time.

@37 maria: I'm rooting for Jay because of his story and do wish that this movie gets good response though I can't imagine how, but we'll get to judge only after the movie comes out, right? :d
