Possible extensions for Dong Yi and Baker King

Two dramas are currently performing strongly in their respective timeslots, MBC’s Dong Yi and KBS’s Baker King Kim Tak-gu, and are now contemplating extending their runs.

First, Monday-Tuesday’s Dong Yi: The 50-episode historical drama is looking at a 10-episode extension, according to a source with MBC. Currently the station is in talks with the actors to extend their contracts, and is pushing hard for the added episodes. That would give Dong Yi an extra month on the air, pushing the finale broadcast from the from September 7 to October 12.

Dong Yi was a hit from the start and has surpassed the 30% mark, though in the last week its numbers have dropped a few points. They dipped back into the upper 20% range as competitor drama Giant has remained strong and Gumiho: Tale of the Fox’s Child has built from a slow start to a 10% rating.

Next, Wednesday-Thursday’s Baker King Kim Tak-gu: KBS requested the extension, and “careful negotiations” are under way. There are multiple considerations in this case, such as the schedules of the writer and actors, and the mood seems more hesitant than with MBC. The Baker King talks haven’t yet decided how many episodes to add to the initial order of 30.

The drama has been steadily climbing in the ratings, its most recent installments pulling in mid- to high-30% ratings. Understandably, KBS isn’t eager to let this one go if they can help it.

I don't mind extensions as long as it doesn't do more harm than good - which is most likely going to happen *negativity creeps in*.
I'm loving Baker King as it is now but I'm not sure whether the sentiment will be maintained.

Even 50 episodes is a little too much, and adding an extension will probably just damage the story.

i like Baker King , realistic , interesting, believable plots . All casts are acting good , especially
the President .
For me DY is boring , as QSD , women in those drama are very smart so they should be Queen , ruling country . King in DY is ridiculous , acting as young boy
first time in love , dreaming his women whole day long ,with that mentality , immature character how can he rule the country .
War dramas , Comrades and Road number one are good dramas , touching
stories of people during K war . except triangle love story in Road number one
is boring .
Giant , surprising is good drama , interesting plots , solid acting .

I am not a big fan of extensions because the story usually gets spoiled as a result of it - Queen SeoDeok is the perfect example. For Dong Yi of which I am a big fan, I do not support the extension to be 10 episodes, 5 or 6 episodes will do just fine. Baker King Tak Goo to me is the surprise sleeper hit for this year, the story is just good and addictive. Extensions are fine as long as the story is not ruined.

I"m watching both. Dong Yi has frustrating plot/character problems so an extension doesn't thrill me. Haven't seen enough of Baker King to know if it merits an extension. I liked the kid actors and don't care much for the young adult actors who replaced them so I've got a problem maintaining interest.

Dear Javabeans

Thanks for the news but to me both dramas are already too long and hope there will not be any extension. Also does this mean that you will not be recapping Baker King Tak-Gu. I remember you said you might and I have been eagerly waiting for it. Please do recap. Without your recaps somehow something is missing.

Many thanks

Ah! I love watching this drama "Baker King Kim Tak Goo" because it's really really good storyline and make a interesting drama and great casts, of course!
Ohh, I enjoy watching these cute kid actors through 1 to 6 episode AND replace to adult actors in 7 episode --- It's very GOOD drama!

Ahh.......Dong Yi?? Um, I still haven't start to watch this historical drama Dong Yi because I'd probably to get die if I'd watch this long-episode drama, ouch. Sorry, I can't do that, lololz. (nervous chuckles) ^______^

FIGHTING, BAKER KING!

Oh God. I just hope Baker King does not get extension. However as long it did not kill the excitement and storyline, it is alright. Just don't extend more than 6 episode. 36 episode for me already long. Dong Yi 50 + 10 = God help me I'm tired

Dong Yi extension? i do love it, as long as it didnt ruin the story. so far, i am Dong Yi fan. i dont mind the 50 or 60 or 70 episodes, as long as it has a good story to tell. i dont judge a drama by their episodes, it doesnt always mean that drama longer than 16 is dragging. if the story is simple, than >16 eps is too much. but if the drama has more story to tell more episodes is needed to be added or the storyline is too cramped in.

"Life is beautiful" (SBS), another currently airing weekend drama with high ratings (~20% range), will be possibly extended by 12-24 episodes.

I generally oppose extensions and cuts on principle, but I think Dong Yi might benefit from some extra episodes, given the amount of story points they have left to cover. I'd hate to see crucial stuff get rushed after they spent so much time embelishing the early parts of the story.

Am loving "Baking King.." (And I haven't even seen a single episode with English subs!) You can always count me in if Eugene is involved io a project. Can't wait to see her dressed up in her rich-girl finery. She already looks dynamite in just a checkered shirt and that dirty hat!

"Dong Yi extension? i do love it, as long as it didnt ruin the story."

MBC sageuks typically get a request for extension if their ratings meet expectations. (Then again, Shin Don's ratings weren't great, and it still ran 61 episodes.) Another way to look at it, the shows are typically planned with 60-ish episodes in mind, but they go with 50 episodes to protect their investment. Better than, say, what SBS did with Princess Ja Myung Go.

The original synopsis stated it would cover Dong Yi raising her son. But at this point, the drama is still very far away from that. My guess is that the extension determines whether that story arc is done or not.

I hate extensions because usually means filler episodes that drags on and on especially in saeguk dramas. As much as I hate Jang Hee-bin I hope she'll will be around longer if they decides to extend Dong Yi. Conflicts between the two factions without Jang Hee-bin wont be half as interesting, just like QSD without Mishil in the last 12 episodes.

Baker King don’t needs to be extended, it’s a (okay) drama. The main actor over acts and the other co-stars don't act too they're potential. The storyline is so far fetch even for a K-drama (fictional) I wouldn’t mind having Giant extend; I can't get enough of that drama...

"The storyline is so far fetch even for a K-drama (fictional) "

KBS2's heavily revamped their programming with makjangs and SBS-style event dramas the past year, and it's paid off handsomely. For a station that didn't have a show do 30s since perhaps 2004-05, they've racked up the hits the last year and a half.

@Kiara,

"just like QSD without Mishil in the last 12 episodes."

Yeah, but the QSD producers intended to cover her reign all along. The extension signed off on that story arc.

"As much as I hate Jang Hee-bin I hope she’ll will be around longer if they decides to extend Dong Yi."

Don't see it as much, if they choose to cover Dong Yi's later life. Maybe a rivalry between their sons.

I'm currently watching King of Baking and I don't mind if they decide to extend it or not. I'm not gonna cry over it if they don't but their ratings are doing every well despite lil advertisement so I wouldn't be surprised if it gets extended. It's already on it's 14 episode today and I still want more of it. The story line isn't too slow or boring. I read one of the comments above that the lead Yoon Shi-yoon overacts but I don't think so.

I love Dong Yi but lately the story gets a little boring....not to mention that all the characters always seem to be "surprised" with everything and I mean just everything. For me, the flashbacks do not help and can get annoying because the flashbacks were actually conversations you've just heard just nanoseconds ago. The PD(?) is trying to really stretch it. I hope they do it in moderation.

@19 "I think Dong Yi might benefit from some extra episodes, given the amount of story points they have left to cover."

There is so much filler and slack in these dramas that could be safely removed. All those flashbacks that serve no purpose (yes, I do in fact remember the conversation that occured ten seconds ago or earlier in the episode) can go, and so can needless subplots (for example, that oh-so hilarious artist in Yi San was excruciatingly boring and irrelevant to the story, not to mention redundant since Cho-bi was already there providing actually funny comic relief). Conversations can be shortened, and superfluous ones can be eliminated entirely. Removing junk like this is Writing 101.

But if they tightened the story-telling, there would be fewer episodes, which I assume means less money. However, fewer episodes also means smaller production costs. Not sure how that balances out.

I really can't get enough of Dong Yi. Great production and cast. Funny too! The best laugh was when Dong Yi gave the Officer (or King) an ultimatum - "it's the wall or your back!" That was just hysterical. :)

Similar to some views, as long as the story is solid, it really doesn't matter how long the series goes. One thing I would like to see or hear is a new song added. They seem to play the same one over and over again.

Baker King is not that good of a drama for a extension, the main actor over acts and the co-stars don't act to they full potential. It would be a scary if they extended this mediocre storyline that so fictional even for K-drama standards

Extending "Dong Yi" would just be too much. I am really getting tired of the same facial expressions and same reactions by everyone in the cast. There are no refreshing moments anymore!!!
I also feel that the directors do not give the audience any credit for understanding what is going on in the story. For example, why does a character who is suppose to be hiding something from another character always give away her/his thoughts and feelings in their acting? It is very, very annoying. WE GET IT!! Please do not insult our intelligence!
Dong Yi, who is featured as being so brilliant, is so stupid at times Like the time she is running for her LIFE and she stops to mumble a prayer to her father and brother. So frustrating!!
Extending it would just multiple the continuous conflicts and silliness that runs rampant in this story. Watchers can only take so much of evil and its prevalence. It wears out one's soul and spirit!!!

While there are a no. of quibbles w/ "Dong Yi" - a few actors/characters using the same facial expressions, overuse of flashbacks of scenes which just happened which interrupts the natural flow, dragging out of certain story lines - overall, tho, DY is a pretty good historical drama (probably w/ the most entertaining plotlines revolving around palace machinations/politics) where the end of an episode often leaves one in anticipation of the next.

Having said that, the first 5-6 episodes which centered around the young DY were a bit boring (things don't get really interesting until all the palace maneuvering happens), and the child actress who plays the young DY got a bit annoying w/ her facial expressions (Han Hyo joo's acting got a bit annoying as well since she had to use the same facial expressions for the older DY; the leader of the South Faction and the 2nd Queen's brother also get annoying w/ their repetitive facial expressions).

Otoh, Jung Jin young and Ji Jin hee do a real good job w/ their characters (I actually like the playful/boyish side of the King's character), as does Park Ha sun as Queen no.1 (it also doesn't hurt that she's real easy on the eyes) and actresses who play Court Lady Jung and Lady Inspector Eum.

As for all the comments about the DY being so smart/clever - for someone who is supposed to be so clever, she actually does a good no. of boneheaded moves that either puts her in peril or gets her in trouble (but I guess, it wouldn't make for interesting drama if she simply outsmarted everyone).

But man, 60 episodes is a lot (even if other historical dramas have done 70-80 episodes).

Baker Kim Tak Gu -- We want him to end up happily with Eugene. No matter how we try to like LYA, we still find that Eugene should be the 1st female lead role and no others for this drama. If you want your drama to be saleable and make more profits, please please please - Eugene should have a happy ending with Kim Tak Gu. All of these complaints about extending Dong Yi. Tsk, obviously they are not watching and/or enjoying the show as much as we are!! I would be happy if it was extended at least 80 episodes as long as the story stays true and doesn't stray from the original tale.

I LOVE Dong Yi!!!! :-)

people actually like kim tak goo.. lol. that drama was a joke. first off.. kim's gf.. ermm if she had really loved tak goo, shdnt she consider him at all knowing his background(president's fav. son) n be on his side especially so if she wanted revenge against the step-mum. made no sense to me when she chose the step-bro over him. n what a pathetic vengence, egging her mother-in-law while her husband went out with other women. and we were supposed to feel for her? i cldnt even shed a tear nor an iota of sympathy.
and tak goo, suddenly lost his ability to fight when he was supposed to be street smart n they portrayed him as a very good fighter when he got older, fighting with a whole lot of them. and then when ur mom was surrounded by all the bad people, he cldnt fight???
his mom's petty lil attempts at revenge.. lol.
his step-brother did arson n theft , intention to harm by poisoning n he got scot-free? the script writers were all right with that? just brush it aside as something minor?
etc etc.. poor, ridiculous storyline, over exaggerated acting, excessive drama, n senseless twists.. i wonder how this drama get so many praises.
are people really watching the very same drama i had watched?
dong yi.. my both thumbs up for great plot, great acting... i have thoroughly enjoyed every episode and there was not a single dull moment. i love how the script writers made sure there was a cliffhanger in each episode, making me looked forward to the next n the next n the next. all loose ends are tidily tied and well placed. excellent drama to watch.
sorry to put my two cents worth n dont mean to offend anyone. :D thank you for reading
