Baker King reaches “national drama” status
by | August 12, 2010 | 182 Comments

What’s a “national drama”? The official designation comes when a drama has surpassed 40% in the ratings, but it also has added connotations. That is to say, a television show that hits that level of viewership is one that the whole country is watching and buzzing about. Examples: Sandglass, My Name Is Kim Sam-soon, and A Rosy Life.

Baker King Kim Tak-gu has surpassed 40%, earning it national drama status. But single episode ratings can be misleading, and there’s another measure that takes into account the overall performance, which is the rating average over the entire series. With Wednesday’s Episode 19 (which drew a 44.9% rating), Baker King has now become the drama with the highest ratings average among KBS Wednesday-Thursday shows in the last decade. It surpassed the previous leader, A Rosy Life (which starred the now-deceased Choi Jin-sil), whose series average was 34.2%. This week’s episodes bumped Baker King‘s overall average up to 34.3%.

Baker King‘s mix of warmth and makjang (excessively melodramatic) elements has hooked audiences, and spurred KBS into discussions to extend the drama. However, the production recently decided NOT to extend the series, which will end with its planned 30 episodes.

Meanwhile, the competition: SBS’s My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho managed a solid start with a 12.7% rating this week, which is a safe number. That leaves the drama room to improve, but even if it remains in that range, its fresh and funny storytelling will likely earn it a passionate fanbase anyway. (Much like You’re Beautiful, which generated tons of buzz and could probably be called a huge success despite 10%-12% ratings.)

On the other hand, MBC’s Road No. 1 has had a pretty disastrous showing and yesterday’s episode brought it to its lowest rating yet, 4.9%. Thursday’s rose slightly to 5.2%.

i flipping love this drama!!! sooo addicting! it’s got lots of yummy looking bread in it too.

  2. Kris

WoW! I might just check this drama out! (If I can only find the time to watch a drama….)

I can’t believe Road No. 1 is doing so poorly…with the big budget hype and all….

  3. langdon813

I just do not get it. At all! Baker King is no Sam-soon…not even close. My opinion only, of course. 8)

    • 3.1 ockoala

Boy Baker: looks sad and is virtuous

      Eugene: looks determined or wronged

LYA: *adverts my eyes* *oh lord what hideous haircut is on her head?!?*

Evil Mom: looks evil and is slappy

Dad: looks woe and is constipated by sonnys and wife-from-hell.

Unbrother: looks ragey and is jealous.

      :-D

      • 3.1.1 insertusernamehere

        this. A+ :)

    • 3.2 cille

i don’t think the ratings or this article is saying that it’s like kim sam-soon.. i will say that it’s in the same league with the likes of kim sam-soon.

the storyline is great! all the characters were definitely well written which makes it a good drama all around. what i absolutely love about it, is that it doesn’t just have a great OTP or even 2nd leads for that matter. the story connects EVERY character which i think is what’s making it a nation’s drama.

i know that i will be following MGIAG and i definitely think that it will have a fanbase like YB – but i like the realism of BK.

  4. aquarianunicorn

idk….it seems to me SBS produces more entertaining dramas. i dont care about the ratings…as long as it entertains me and the storyline isnt’ stupid…i’m all for it.

    • 4.1 Selli

I totally agree. SBS really has brought forth shows that I found entertaining to watch, and has hit my…vibe? or whatever XD often!

I don’t think I’ll ever watch BKKTG, but it’s awesome for the actors, etc., that it’s doing so well : )

  5. popcorn9521

I absolutely can’t wait for each episode of Baker King to come out! It’s an amazing drama in many ways although i’m a probably a sucker for makjang dramas. I think it has the right balance of a solid plot, acting, makjang. i also like the references to the 1987 democracy movements (i’m kinda of a history buff), so maybe that’s why the drama is resonating with so many viewers in Korea! Fighting, Kim Tak Goo!

  6. Taber

All I have to say is THERE NOTHING ELSE TO WATCH ON WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. The rating can’t be for the storyline or the over acting of the main character, it painful to watch…The rating it high because of hump day boredom. I start another diet before I watch another dept-less episode.

    • 6.1 pipit

I’ve been wondering for quite sometimes about the high rating and the Korean taste.

But I’ve come to a conclusion for myself : never EVER pay attention to the rating.

Most of those with high ratings turn out to be a major disappointment for me. Jumong for example I bought its complete DVDs simply because of one sentence in one of its promos ‘the greatest love story of all time’ yeah, right. I didn’t even finish it. And perhaps never will. Have been wondering whether it’s possible to file a law suit!.

And then the latest: Coffee House!

I know for sure now that the Korean taste (who ever contributes to that high ratings) is definitely not similar with mine.

      • 6.1.1 Dara

Agree, high rating Korean drama disappointed me. Now I listen to ppl comments on the net more. I think I begin to understand a bit of Korean taste, so as the rating. So to speak, I just don’t care as long as it has good storyline and entertaining.

        • 6.1.1.1 Lily

haha I RARELY watch Korean drama, the only dramas I’ve watched were Full House back in 2004 and I didn’t even finish that ( due to other things ), Dae Jang Geum (awesome!), Empress Myung Seung and BOF (eek, did not like). But I’ve got to say that this drama is reALLY REALLy addicting and surprisingly twisted! At first I just wanted to see what the hype was about, then the child actors just got me in. I was gonna stop at episode six because that was when all the characters grew up, but I still wanted to find out whats gonna happen to TaeGu, so just skip over some episode and ect. This drama is worth it!

  7. yoyo

can i ask who is the main girl for baker kim. is it eugene?

    • 7.1 Roxy Lee

It’s not Eugene, I can tell you that much. She’s the villain this time around.

  8. Elena

Thanks for the news! Part of the charm of this drama is when the ‘makjang’ parts the sound track is incredibly right on – so that when the ‘mom’ is having a tantrum, the silent movie melodrama piano starts and take the edge of the ‘over-the-top’ – making it seem almost deliberate.

Sam -soon was just good drama, and the lead was not a size 3, which then appeals to a wider audience.

They each might have these high ratings, but you cannot compare then.

    Thanks again.

  9. Elena

    Oh, I forgot …
The set, cinematography are fantastic. The period clothing, just WOW!

    • 9.1 Lily

I know! The mom looked so pretty! AHH

  10. 10 Miss unknown

I dont understand whats the buzz about baker…..i love eugene but the series is so biring to me no matter how much i try to watch this series! Lol…

    • 10.1 Lily

That was what I thought at first. Baking, are you kidding me? What’s gonna come out of there?

But man was I so wrong!
The plot is not your average normal korean drama
      gotta watch it

  11. 11 xiaoSxin

pretty amazing how this drama is now very successful given the fact that it did not have a huge pre-production buzz unlike IRIS, ROAD No. 1, ATHENA.. and its main actor is not a big A list Star.

Kudos to the staff and actors of Baker King! I wanted to watch this but I am still a bit prejudiced of the “makjang” part..

    • 11.1 Lily

      makjang?

  12. 12 dannaluk

all i have to ask is…so am i the only one not watching it??…why am i not watching it??

    • 12.1 Alex

      nope you’re not alone

  13. 13 Roxy Lee

Yoon Si Yoon is fucking great in this! I love him! So cute! This drama was intense from the very first episode and from there I was sucked in! Haha, love it, love it, love it! Eugene is great in it, and the cinematography is just stunning, the soundtrack is beautiful, the acting and casting is spot on, perfection all around.

  14. 14 otk

My vibes just tell me that Gumiho will take over the top spot after Baker King finishes. It’ll be quite miraculous if Playful Kiss beats it. As Gumiho was the most ‘looked forward’ drama of Fall.

  15. 15 elisa

lol i’m sure tak gu is good but i couldn’t get through the first five minutes LOL. i’ll watch it some other time but for now dong yi and gumiho! :)

    korea loves bread…. hahhaha

  16. 16 maez

I watched the first few eps but then i was “i don’t want to see all this suffering.”

anyways i just went to see a glimpse of ep 17 so can anyone tell me what has happened to his mom since she looks rich now?

    • 16.1 bluebunny

Ok, you don’t want to see all this suffering (meaning you’re not interested in continuing the drama?) but why would you ask what happens to Tak Goo’s mom?

      • 16.1.1 maez

because i don’t want to go through the episodes i haven’t watched and see tak goo have his heart destroyed. but i might.

      • 16.1.2 lilly

        AHAHAHAHAHA. Lol well said

  17. 17 charitee

@12: im not watching it either! i don’t know why i haven’t but i just don’t have the urge even though i’m hearing good things about it [and the ratings are RIDICULOUS]. i downloaded the first episode but i haven’t gotten myself to watch it…

  18. 18 kellie

45%? I don’t get the buzz about this one. What’s the fan base for Baker King? Females who dig Eugene and chinless wonder Yoon? ‘Course I didn’t understand the ‘national drama’ status of Queen Seon Deok either.

    • 18.1 Lily

Ya, I was surprised when I heard that Baking thing is getting such high ratings. I got attracted into the drama because of the child actors :) Oh man they can act and now I can’t stop :( But i’m just skipping through the episode for key events.

  19. 19 kou

Baker King, you make my heart hurt. Why must you ruin yourself?

The drama is painful to watch even though there’s food porn and a pretty solid cast.

    The writing just kills it.

TakGu, you will be the poor child with the world loving you because you just work so hard.

MaJun, you’ll never get your daddy’s love. Oh snap. Forgot to tell you. He’s not really your daddy. Are you going to get mad again?

To be honest, I invested too many hours into the drama, waiting for something to happen and I feel so stupid. I was waiting for some kind of character realization. For someone to be the grownup. For MaJun to be the first to take the step towards a different self.

At first, I thought he was like Kang DongWon physically and acting wise. But he kept showing the same angry, scrunched up face. It took me 18 episodes to finally see a side to him that made me think, “Wow. There’s more to his character than anger and pettiness.”

And then right after that, he reverted and I decided that I had enough.

There’s so much that you can do with a character like MaJun and the drama just refuses to dip into that lovely angst. They just let him be the smart, handsome guy that’s always angry and that always gets jealous of TakGu.

Sigh. The food porn wasn’t worth it.

    • 19.1 Wendy

wow, u dont know what u missed out. cuz at the end he did change. i didnt have a problem with majun being jealous cuz i pretty much understood where he was coming from. but at the end he DID change.
i was mainly watching this cuz tak gu was so cute and inspiring, and the plot had good twists. it was def worth it.

  20. 20 grasya

i’m slowly watching this drama at kbsworld, but i’m reading the forums regarding the recent episodes. so much suffering for Tak Gu. At episode 20, i thought he would be building his empire as stated in the synopsis, but my gosh, he’s suffering some more.

i have to agree though. somehow, the warmth of this drama keeps me going — despite all the bad things which befell on Tak Gu, I want to see him victorious in the end. i guess 40% of SK are cheering for Tak Gu’s happy ending as well. ‘The good guys always win in the end.’ : )

  21. 21 Birdie

I am watching it as my favourite dramas CH and PP had finished and there is nothing better. The drama overall production is good but not great. The storyline is typical . I wouldn’t rave about it. To me the best dramas so far in 2010 are CH and PP.

    • 21.1 myra

      you and i both.

      • 21.1.1 Apple

me three :o CH and PP was really good, i never thought that it will be that good.

  22. 22 ghsforever

Best Korean drama in 2010 :)

    • 22.1 bluebunny

      Agree! :)

  23. 23 rave

Baker King deserves the high ratings. It is engaging and every episode counts. And the production company that handles this drama really aims for quality over all. They could’ve accepted the offer of KBS for extension so that they’ll gain more bucks but they refused it because the audience was hooked because of the pacing of this drama which was supposedly a 50-episode drama cut into 30 episodes, so that each episode will be very important and the audience won’t feel draggy at all.

Sorry to the haters out there if the dramas of your favorite stars were crushed by this series even though it was not hyped(unlike it’s predecessors IRIS, Chuno & Cinderella’s Sister), is low-budgeted and has almost no big stars(except for Eugene who’s had back to back drama flops). And to the people comparing this drama to MNIKSS, there’s no comparison at all. MNIKSS is a romcom and Baker King is a melodrama. Plus the baking in Baker King revolves around “breads” hence the English title “Bread, Love and Dreams,” while in MNIKSS the baking there revolves around “cakes.”

    • 23.1 anon

      Way to say it!! :D

  24. 24 Kay

Oh man, I totally LOVE this drama!

Okay, warning, it’s really heavy on the melodramatic side, so if you’re hoping it’ll be more “trendy” and “fast-paced” then you’re looking at the wrong drama HOWEVER even if you’re not into melodrama, take a chance with this drama because I promise you’ll be hooked. It’s just that good….

The acting isn’t phenomenal or anything, and thankfully Kim Tak Gu (played by Yoon Shi Soon) is a complete cutey, however I think the plot is really engaging and something about food dramas are always fun~!

    Yay. I love this show!

    • 24.1 pipit

I might give it a chance later.
It depends on how it progresses and ends.

  25. 25 :D

    can u start recapping this?

  26. 26 jose

i really love this drama ,in the beginning i only have curiosity for the quite high ratings ,but baker king deserves it ,is very good ,even if few people don’t like it ,many people in korea and also some people in the web like me love it

  27. 27 tz

I love this drama and can’t wait for each episode

As a melodrama–there are going to be aspects of it that feel predictable–like the story–it’s nothing groundbreaking. But I think the execution is just right on. The pacing is good. The soundtrack fits the emotional highs and lows. The actors are solid and while YSY occasionally takes it over the top–he is cute enough that I don’t care.

Personally, I think the characterization is strong because there are no “good” or “evil” characters. Almost everyone is wrong or has been wronged in some way. Also, while I have a sense of what is coming–nothing ever plays out in the way I might expect. Something unexpected always happens to twist the scene a little. Also the bread looks so yummy on screen.

I think it deserves it’s ratings…and I think it’s more than the fact that there is not much competition. The lack of competition is what gave the show a chance in the first place–but I think the show itself is what kept people watching.

  28. 28 lilly

Who could guess that this drama would have this statu…especially a drama without big names…WOW !

  29. 29 R

I was following baker king up to episode 14.. Then I had to quit. I just couldn’t take it anymore. All those going around in the circle and over the top (often unnecessary) melodrama isn’t my cup of tea (I left my patience while watching Goong, thank you very much). I agree the acting isn’t great (ok they are downright bad) but there are so many holes in the plot too. Things are not consistent at all.

I have to say, I dislike all the characters. I-need-a-grandson-cause-men-are-the-shit grandma, I-can’t-move-a-muscle-I-have-botox dad, I’m-just-evil-pitiful-woman wife, look-at-me-I’m-so-vulnerable-and-helpless Tak-gu’s mom (a closet skank), I’m-forever-jealous half bro, I’m-ever-so-cheery Tak-gu ain’t my cup of tea.

My views are often clashing with Korean trend these days.. First we are flooded with Auto-tune (how could they use it for Lee Seung-Gi’s voice) and now this drama.. I just don’t get it.

  30. 30 pengork

heh, i just started this yesterday, watched 2 episodes, but i skipped the childhood eps and started from adulthood (ep 7, in case anyone’s wondering). yoon shi yoon is crazy eye-candy, he looks like someone smushed lee junki and 2am’s jinwoon into one super-cute earnest package. 2 eps in prob isn’t enough for me to judge, but… it’s not groundbreaking at all, i don’t really know why it works. i’ve seen many, many better dramas, more original dramas, but so far it’s compelling and entertaining. i think at this point yoon shi yoon is the big pull (that face. *__* being purely shallow here but my hormones have seriously taken a tackle with this one), but it’s dramatic without having a heavy, depressing air, and i think so far for me that’s what’s working. plus, the little no-nonsense female lead’s kicked him in the shins twice in the last 2 eps, two for two!

  31. 31 allmessedup

the high ratings of baker king could be because people have had enough of over-hyped productions with big stars, big budgets but with very little substance. all these dramas have questionable acting, directing and writing.

maybe, just maybe, people just want to go back to the basics – food! doesn’t matter if the acting, directing and writing are questionable too, people just wanna go back to the basics.

  32. 32 blahblahblah

i personally like this drama because of eugene especially since she’s suppose to be a villain. im really interested to see what will happen to her character along with Joo Won’s {who plays tak-gu’s “brother” ma joon}.

also about the whole “female lead” thing, in my opinion its eugene. even though shes a bad character, her actions and existence affect the drama greatly. i feel that the other female lead, even though she’ll be tak-gu’s love interest in the end, is only for comic relief and to probably be the only person tak-gu can rely on after all this betrayal. just because you’re the main lead’s love interest {in the end} doesn’t mean that you are THE female lead. imo, its eugene.

    • 32.1 lilly

Another frustrated Eugene FAN. Deal with it ! Eugene is not the main female lead here. This is LYA. Eugene maybe “prettier” or more “popular” but LYA is not an inferior woman compared to Eugene. So she can be the lead female character too.

      • 32.1.1 orangy911

^^I totally agree. I am a fan of both women. Eugene might be “prettier” and attracts other people, but Lee Young Ah is (in my opinion) a better actress. I feel like they made LYA’s character “uglier” (like Lee Yoon Ji in Heading to the Ground) on purpose so Eugene looks better onscreen. And the relationship between Tak Gu and Mi Sun is much more engaging to me than Tak Gu and Yoo Kyung’s romance. I am so sick of reading/hearing about how because Lee Young Ah is so much uglier than Eugene, she doesn’t deserve to be the main lead. Eugene fans (not all of them…just the over-active ones) need to calm down.

      • 32.1.2 samoa

ya, eugene is just average in acting wise here, please don’t twist the fact, she is not the reason for 40% MARK. Without her, or if played by other actresses it still can reach that level-it is the storyline and at the right time for Korean taste.

        • 32.1.2.1 Wendy

Yeah, i agree that Eugene’s acting wasn’t top notch here, but in my opinion, she IS still the main female lead. A female lead doesn’t need to be the one that ends up with the male lead. I judge their status based on the impact their characters have on the show. While LYA is cute and all, she doesn’t really do anything or say anything to make her stand out to me. Her character is the perfect description of the ever supportive side character, in fact. She didn’t really have her own story, and she didn’t have that much screen time either compared to others. Yu Kyung’s story, starting from childhood, until her revenge, is a much bigger part of the overall plot. Besides, I do believe that even at the end, she still had feelings for Tak Goo and vice versa, even though they both chose to be with different people. :)

  33. 33 narumi

    agree with @23:rave.
those dramas with big buzz are just promoting its stars rather than the storyline…well maybe it is just my opinion coz i tend to not watching drama with stars like kim tae hee, or that G.I Joe actor…and the chuno drama, with jang hyuk and others..whats more cinderella sister…I just can stand until episode 8 and I flunk it from my list…

take you’re beautiful for example, eventho i’m a fan of jang geun seuk and lee hong ki, I just dont fancy that drama as much as this because of it’s over the top ridiculousness with Park Shin Hye who looks really girly crossdressed as a boy but acted much like a girl does…and with her voice…urghh..very unrealistic…so I know why the rating was not really good back in Korea even it is well accepted by netizens…(I think mostly they’re the ANJELL fan around the world)

Baker King got a very dramatic storyline which blended in a perfect dramatic timeline, and makes the viewers anticipated the next episodes after watching it. the casting was good and their acting makes sense.. realistically…so..way to go Baker King!…(I’m rooting for Yoon Shi Yoon..and his cute smile) =)

  34. 34 KNG Dekkoya!

Can’t be..!!! My sister is literally forcing herself to watch the drama just because she does not like unfinished businesses.. She is literally bored to death and can’t wait to finish the Drama. I think it’s all because of the food and the passionate people’s love for cooking otherwise the Drama is a wack. Eugene is an old goose and the guy is super cute yet not sufficient enough to make me watch it. I think Nappeun Namja should have been the National Drama or whatever. People just stopped caring for quality and i do agree that SBS makes the best dramas ever. My favorite drama’s have always been of SBS… KBS production teams tend to draaaaaag the soul of the storyline thus pull the life outta my nose so… I disagree strongly Yorobeun.

    • 34.1 lilly

When you talk about quality I hope you were not a BOF or YAB’s fan…

  35. 35 ockoala

    44% ratings breaks down into

20% for the Poor Man’s Lee Junki (normally worth 5% but since Junki is off in MS his value quadruples)

5% – started off at -5% for the Poor Woman’s Nam Sang Mi (with a very unfortunate bow haircut), but adds a 10% for reuniting Iljimae fangirls waiting for their poor Bong Soon to get Yong, now’s your change, imagine this is Bong Soon and Yong reincarnated into modern times.

7% for evil Eugune – a great risk for her to take, and she looks fabulous and is acting her heiny off – would be higher but she got docked points bc this is pretty much her F-you to all her critics (who are you calling Nation’s Fairy, now!) and her one-up-manship of Sung Yuri.

6% for Daddy with the perpetual son issues Jung Kyung Ryul – who is great as the tortured daddy but got docked points since his daddy issues have gotten progressively less epic-in-scale (from Buyeo to Jeju to baking bread).

5% for evil mommy – is she more evil than Madame Shin? We’ll have to wait and find out. At least she hasn’t tried to kill people yet. Or has she?

1% for the Poor Man’s Kang Dong Won – wow can this boy NOT act more than most his other co-stars are not-acting. But his backside looks great! 1% for his backside!

Look everyone, as long as people like this drama, good for Baker King. I think it’s the most unintentionally hilarious bit I’ve seen in awhile, but it’s rather harmless and doesn’t take itself seriously. And it’s fun to poke fun at.

    • 35.1 kou

I love this. Thumbs up. I laughed at the last one percent. Agreed. In my heart, I wanted him to be like Kang DongWon but no.

    • 35.2 lilly

If you are a Lee Min Ho’s fan I would say : Coming from a Lee Min Ho’s fan who liked him in his disasters BOF and plotless PT (I still wonder how some people in their reviews found this plothole somewhat…good) I don’t know what to reply to that…

      • 35.2.1 kou

I watched neither of those dramas so I have no opinion on LMH and his drama choices or his acting chops.

        • 35.2.1.1 lilly

          Errr…I talked to Ockola.

          • 35.2.1.1.1 mookie

I’m curious, am I missing several links fr Baker King to LMH/BoF/PT?! I almost need to know why this convo has anything to do w/ LMH?! or …kola?! ;)

    • 35.3 hjkomo

      ROFLMAO!!!

      • 35.3.1 ockoala

        @ twin and hjkomo

I think I understand if I twist my mind a bit around the logic – I think lilly means to passive-aggressively infer that LMH fans (and I am clearly not a LMH fan, I am a fan of LMHMG’s butt in those pants in PT) are either not good at math and/or not able to discern good plot in dramas.

Since I am not a LMH fan, I can’t neither deny or agree with this presumption.

@ lilly – as for myself, I never professed to be good at math (and I’m assuming you are referring to me, be it I am not Ockola, but someone once called me ockolola so it’s cool). No sirree, my forte is merely enjoying life. :-D

        • 35.3.1.1 lilly

I am referring to this case because the words you used to desribe BKKTG can be perfectly used to describe a dramas like PT and BOF (I will add YAB, Full House ect…) and I talk about LMH and his dramas because I am sure a lot of people who bash BKKTG and are frustrated that this is a hit when it is not hyped are the same people who praised drama like BOF or YAB (they were not so great too but they had huge popularity an fanbase). But curiously they talk about “ratings are nothing to do with quality”concerning BKKTG. That’s why I told you before “if you’re a LMH”. Since you are not this is good.

          • 35.3.1.1.1 mookie

            Wait… I’m even more lost. @_@

            1. Is there a LMH lurking in DB? *Pretty, if you are here somewhere! HELLO GORGEOUS!*

            2. ‘Since you are not (LMH) this is good.’ This mess w/ my brain, I’m a firm believer of ‘Since you are LMH, this is OMGGOOOODDDDD~~~~~’

            3. Don’t be cruel. Eugene is witchhunted by the SYR/FinKL fandom all her career, don’t alarm her existence to the wrath of the SYJ+SHK+Jandi+GuMiNam fandoms. Have mercy on the poor sweetheart who is already the new BORA to the bakers.

            4. Who is the poor man JunKi in BoF to lock up the 20% rating now? Be careful, we have a LMH, a KJH, a KimBum (and the 4th dude’s) fanbase and they intersect in all mysterious ways but still maybe catty one way or the other. (I’ll out my love for all 4 of them for diff time of the day or night), last but not least is Rain a poorman’s or richman’s JunKi?!

          • 35.3.1.1.2 lilly

Ooops I did a mistake. I meant since “if you are not a LMH’s fan”.

      • 35.3.2 Tuy

Agreed. How did lmh come up? I’m lost lol

    • 35.4 mookie

Post/ Reply of the week!! :)
Are you also a superb accountant on the side out of the many hats u r doning?

      • 35.4.1 ockoala

Want me to do your taxes, sweetie?~ Be forewarned that T will throttle me, as you will likely be audited the following year. I suck at math (and totally being sincere right now – see *big wide shouju eyes*). I am clearly not a real Asian, as I scored higher on the English than Math portion (of the old-school SATs, remember).

    • 35.5 soorin

oh gosh! this guy looks soo much like lee junki… all throughout the one episode that i watched, i could only focus on THAT!

  36. 36 miss_procrastination

I literally started the drama today. I’m now on episode 5. It’s like crack. I usually don’t watch melodrama (I am strictly a romcom girl) but I was intrigued. It’s an absolute roller coaster and I’m enjoying it immensely.

    • 36.1 bluebunny

      LOL @ response! :)

  37. 37 JohnC

Ok now I get. So there is such a thing as “Makjang”.
My wife and I are watching this drama and couldn’t figure out why everyone was overacting like school children in a play.
So “Makjang” is a style in Korean Dramas? I must say it’s hard to get used to.
Cliches abound in this drama. We know who to hate and who to like. Nothing left to the imagination here.

But we still watch it and enjoy it. Sometimes I think we are entertained by the “otherness” of it. People seem to be on the stupid side of innocent.
Then we are charmed by the delicate culture at the same time and the fact that there is some “light” philosophy that points out the good in people. And of course we would like to believe that there are good people like that in the world. And we want revenge on the bad ones.
It’s “Days Of Our Lives” with bread.

I do look forward to seeing every crazy episode but I disagree that the production values are high.
Looks and sound quite dodgy compared to some other dramas.
I love it when we see shots of the fathers mansion. It must be also true in Asian countries that wealthy people have no taste at all. Man that place is ugly!

    • 37.1 Roxy Lee

Uhm, that’s rather offensive to say that wealthy people in Asian countries have no taste at all as I’m Asian, and my family happens to be wealthy. People often say that my parents home is beautiful. I really don’t appreciate that comment, it’s rude, and offensive, and tastes differ from other people so don’t make such an ignorant comment. Just one house doesn’t make up the entire Asian continent.

  38. 38 JohnC

ockoala I just read your post……..you nailed it completely.

  39. 39 all4movies

For all of you who don’t understand why the koreans are loving this drama, maybe it’s because of the bread. If the bread tastes as good as it looks in the drama, boy I need to get me some of that.

Anyways, I have been craving soft, comforting bread ever since I started to watch this series. However, I still can’t find anything better than the chinese bakeries. Except for a few exceptions, he japanese and korean ones in my area just don’t cut it. Maybe Hawaiian bread?

    • 39.1 Lily

lmao yeah i ate a whole bag of bread after watching the first few eps :( weight gain

baker king is so BORING…im forcing myself to watch it cos i wanted to finish once i started it but i cant take it anymore…i was curious cos of the high ratings, nd yoon shi yoon looks a lot like junki but …seriously why would u watch that now when u can switch to my girlfriend is a gumiho….nd soon playful kiss…..i hope its ratings go down..hehe…evil i knw but i hope ppl will watch my girlfriend is a gumiho ..its so much better

  41. 41 SeeYah

This is one of the best dramas by far this year.

I was hoping that they would extend it.

  42. 42 Jae In

Oh God. I love this series. Compelling, engaging, intriguing and addicting drama. This low budget plus minimal promotion drama looks like mock big budget drama Road Number 1. I don’t care what you guys saying (Negative comment). Really hope this drama win some award at Baeksang Award.

    • 42.1 lilly

I think there is a lot of frustration here…LOL Road N.1. I better not to talk about it because frankly I feel so bad for the cast and the crew ! And I watched the first 2 episodes of MGIAG and please can someone tell LSG to stop hamming and pouting his lips like a girl. He tries tooo hard in his acting it is even not funny. The saying grace of the drama is not only the storyline but mostly SMA.

      • 42.1.1 sweet

I try to watch the drama. but it’s kind of boring. I got sleeping when I watched this.

        • 42.1.1.1 sweet

sorry, I mean the boring drama is Road no.1.

I like watching BKKTG & MGIG. both have interesting storyline.

but in the case of characterization, I think MGIG is better than BKKTG.

both lead actor&actress and also the other cast are great in describing each character.

although I agree with you that seunggi’s acting looks a little exaggerating. but I think it is still acceptable. I think he acts naturally and still lovable.

  43. 43 alloo

does it really deserve this high rating !
I haven’t seen any episode yet
the cast and the story give me low hops actually

    hmmmm,
well I believe that rating is not a condition for a drama to be good or bad !!
for instance , Bad guy Drama is really great but it took very low rating !! NOT FARE !!

    • 43.1 lilly

BKKTG’s crew should ask forgivness for crashing BG at ratings…lol. BG was a drama which had no point whatsoever. It tried to hard to be what it is not.

    • 43.2 Tuy

How would you know what it deserves if you haven’t even seen it? O.o

  44. 44 hanabichan

I wanted to like Baker King, I really did. But I am just not a melodrama person, and this is all about the drama. Too much drama and heartache (same reason I dropped Bad Guy). uck. I got through 6 episodes and quit.

I can see how it’s popular. It’s just not for me.

  45. 45 Anonymous

Baker King is my favorite weekly drama right. I check dramacrazy twice a day to see if any episodes with english subs have been released.

Yep. This drama might not have cutesy characters or high profile actors, but it does have a solid storyline.

This drama might not have cutesy characters or high profile actors, but it does have a solid storyline with heart.

  47. 47 Jane

You can usually tell when a dramabeans post has made its way to soompi – that’s when a bunch of people sign on to defend (or show love) for the subject.

    • 47.1 bluebunny

Yeah, and when LSG fans telling peeps that My Girlfriend is a Gumiho (which is only in it’s 2nd episode) is better than Baking King and bashing it?

      • 47.1.1 hoya

checked out soompi, 61 pages for 20 episodes. pretty much an underrated series there. maybe that’s why there are a lot of baker king haters here.

  48. 48 Brittany

Oh..it did work the first time. Sorry for the double post…

  49. 49 Boo

    Makjang???

    Seriousy?!

So far this drama has been a very refreshing and inspirative drama for me, something I never quite get from other kdramas no matter how much I love them. By watching, you’ll know how captivating this drama is,,not just revolving around who’ll get the girl and whatnot~Really one u shouldn’t miss this year!

And if the makjang comments shy you away, well, I pity you!:P

  50. 50 Carmie

It’s really nicely put together. It’s dramatic for sure but I really like the leads and how it’s not just about guy sees girl and falls in love with her. I’m hooked and I got a friend of mine who doesn’t even watch dramas hooked as well and I know it’s not just because the two guys are hot because they weren’t in like the first six episodes and that’s where she got hooked.
