Baker King reaches “national drama” status

What’s a “national drama”? The official designation comes when a drama has surpassed 40% in the ratings, but it also has added connotations. That is to say, a television show that hits that level of viewership is one that the whole country is watching and buzzing about. Examples: Sandglass, My Name Is Kim Sam-soon, and A Rosy Life.

Baker King Kim Tak-gu has surpassed 40%, earning it national drama status. But single episode ratings can be misleading, and there’s another measure that takes into account the overall performance, which is the rating average over the entire series. With Wednesday’s Episode 19 (which drew a 44.9% rating), Baker King has now become the drama with the highest ratings average among KBS Wednesday-Thursday shows in the last decade. It surpassed the previous leader, A Rosy Life (which starred the now-deceased Choi Jin-sil), whose series average was 34.2%. This week’s episodes bumped Baker King‘s overall average up to 34.3%.

Baker King‘s mix of warmth and makjang (excessively melodramatic) elements has hooked audiences, and spurred KBS into discussions to extend the drama. However, the production recently decided NOT to extend the series, which will end with its planned 30 episodes.

Meanwhile, the competition: SBS’s My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho managed a solid start with a 12.7% rating this week, which is a safe number. That leaves the drama room to improve, but even if it remains in that range, its fresh and funny storytelling will likely earn it a passionate fanbase anyway. (Much like You’re Beautiful, which generated tons of buzz and could probably be called a huge success despite 10%-12% ratings.)

On the other hand, MBC’s Road No. 1 has had a pretty disastrous showing and yesterday’s episode brought it to its lowest rating yet, 4.9%. Thursday’s rose slightly to 5.2%.

You can easily distinguish the fantards of the dramas or should I say actors/actresses, competing with Baker King the way they say "____ is so much better, ____ should've been the national drama, Baker King is so boring unlike ____, you guys should watch ____ of Baker King." I kinda pity them because they kept saying the quality of the drama ain't based in the ratings but why are they so bitter with the high ratings that Baker King is achieving?

And give Yoon Si Yoon a break, FYI this is his FIRST DRAMA and is main lead at that. At least he's so much better than some actors who've been in the industry for a long time and of course those idols who pretty much have a single facial expression when acting. I can feel the passion of YSY for acting and he deserves the success he's currently achieving.

Baker King was supposedly a "filler drama," you know, those dramas who are underpromoted and is being broadcasted in preparation of the much hyped drama that will air after it. In this case, this is a filler drama for Rain's Fugitive. That's why I feel happy for the production company and for the actors, at least they earned the "respect" of the station with the high ratings its having right now.

All dramas should have equal promotions because you'll never know what's gonna be a hit or what's gonna be a flop. In this case, what should've been a flop or expected to perform in lower teens by KBS or other networks became a huge gold mine to them.

Actually, this is not Yoon Si Yoon's first drama.

He was one of the leads (out of the 6 leads) in Unstoppable High Kick, the second season of High Kick Through the Roof.

He was a total cutie pie in that drama. :-D

Really? It's a drama, but on daily and with lower production values. But that's a quibble, definitely BK is his first major drama. He seems like quite an earnest boy, I get Jung Il Woo vibes from him.

Yeah, for me this is still his first drama wherein he can show his acting chops. I was not able to watch High Kick 2 but I think he also had some dramatic scenes there even though it's a sitcom. Like the back-hug thingy I saw in some articles before, I think that's what propelled him and SSK to stardom? I dunno, haha. But yeah, he's really focused in his work. And speaking of JIW he was in High Kick 1 and he also became more popular after that sitcom, just like YSY today.

I'm very envy of but happy you witnessed the meteor shower, H-sama! :)

I'm sticking w/ me being a fanTart! To commemorate Baker being National Drama 2010, I crave sth Baker themed (I'm more a MNIKSS/cake girl, so I'll lean towards the pastry variety than the whole diff beast of breads yet me scared of too cakey, a begrudged Baker King, we shan't want)

And Djes did give us a great reason to coin Baker fans as fantard = fan+mustard... spicy and begs for buns (bun = bread) Chicago style

How about farttart? Its like a poptart that smells like a fart when you put it in the toaster. This is my way of celebrating BK getting the high ratings buy coming up with a product that can be easily baked in an easy bake oven and just as edible.

I'm not sure what the hype about King of Baking is but I really enjoy watching it. I agree the lead actor definitely overacts but the story still draws me in. The brother's raging jealousy and what not gets old fast but I really don't know why it draws me in.

However Gumiho has really caught my eye. Shin Min Ah is doing an excellent job. I love her, I think she fits the role very well.

Well, good luck to King of Baking.

This is really my favorite drama of 2010. At first the 30 episodes was a little daunting. I swore off melodramas after "What Happened in Bali." The fact that it's a melodrama did put me off initially, but after a few episodes, I became addicted. It's so good and has heart.

I really love Baker King. I was skimming through the comments here...

Each person has their own personal tastes for drama storylines. In my opinion, I love deep, solid, realistic storylines, so Baker King really does it in for me.

Everyone thinks Eugene should back off blah blahblah... you guys, she might have some fans watching this drama because of her, but did you really think ALL of the people who watch this are her fans? She's the "villian" in this drama, which is a big step for her (but she wanted to show the nation that she's not some freaking cutie fairy) but I still think she's the main character. Why?
Her character has been in this drama from the start. Misoon only randomly popped in from episode 7. Why would you think Misoon is the main character, when all she does is float along in the background and give baking tips to Tak Goo? I mean, really, you guys?

Since when does stills have anything to do with main leads? It's the character, the role they play in the story that decides whether or not they are the main lead. Misoon has no character. I'm sorry, but she does not.

Notice that I said Misoon. I don't give a flip about Eugene, the actress, or LYA. I'm talking story.

0

Required fields are marked *

Nah... Eugene is the female lead. Look at the storyline/plot. Eugene's character in the drama has a larger impact on the whole story. LYA's character is just floating around in the background most of the time.

Eugene's character appeared from the beginning of the drama while LYA's charater came in only somewhere in the middle of the story.

The lead role does not necessary has to be a good person.

i'm thankful that the producers threw the possibility for an extension out of the window! i'm still hanging on, for its characters are well written, but i am on the edge already; solid family plot (perhaps this would account for half its rating), but too much makjang and a little slow for my taste.

in general, it does deserve this much attention and applause. but a word of caution for those who have yet started, hold your breath till ep 29 before you start watching! else, your interest might just slid down hill 'cos of the slew melodrama that it entails.

I actually really like Baker King, but I think Eugene has been really miscast. She usually looks really cute and adorable and I can sort of see why the producers thought they could get away with it, but put her next to the 2 male leads all I'm getting from her is a noona vibe despite all the characters supposedly being the same age. She just looks really old.

So it is a disappointing year for both So Ji-Sob and KJH. Their dramas didn't do well with the rating. But I think KJH in CH have taken a further step in his acting skills with the depth and complexity character as Lee Jin Soo, well written drama.

I didn't have a chance to check on Baker King since I tend to avoid long drama but I can understand its success. Congrats!

I was busy watching watching Coffee House and forgot to check up on this drama until its 10 eps in

so I basically did a marathon and fell in love with the show

the directing is kind of weak...I think the plot has substance and the actors are mostly top notch

but the pacing feels a bit slow and sometimes I feel like the director is making things way too obvious for the viewers

despite that I'm still hooked! Cant wait to see what happens next

i was reading all the comments...and I can say (im not sure though) out of the most haters here, they got bored...of course it was boring for those who doesn't like melodramatic dramas and the added slow-paced of baker king...my comment was just why do you have to watch a genre which you don't like?

As for me, maybe i was like other people here who got bored but only in the early episodes (I also almost give up watching it) because I'm also not fond of melodrama but as I watched through the episodes, I found it addicting...and I'm loving it...

This drama has a typical and traditional story or I can say, cultural...the characters were also predictable but it there is somewhat different in the story which i don't really know...i also think this drama has charm...

the main story here is not about baking bread...why do people always says that bread is the reason why this drama has a high rating?...i think it was not...

What caught my interest regarding this drama is the fact that there are no big stars in it except for maybe Eugene and Lee Young Ah (loved her in the Golden Bride).. But after watching a few episodes, I was literally hooked! This is the first 2010 kdrama that tugged at my heart, sometimes the tears just won't stop.. Guess, I'm a sucker for melodramas/family dramas with oh-so-virtuous lead character like Kim Tak Goo. I absolutely love Yoon Si Yoon's characterization, it fit him to a T.

The acting of some of the actors may be over-the-top especially the crying scenes of KTG's mother but the rest gave solid acting, love Eugene, LYA, the elders esp. KTG's grandmother, the grandfather and even the newcomer Joo Won.

I haven't watched Bakery King so far, but judging from its rating, it should be an interesting drama...maybe will watch it later.

For My girlfriend is a gumilho, given that it's a production of the Hung sisters, I am sure I can't miss it.

Actually, I am watching Road No. 1. So Ji Sub performed very well in the drama (I just have the feeling that he's really a military man!!). I must admit that the love story of the main characters in this drama is not so attractive and well-designed (or I must say, a little bit meaningless), but I like the feelings and scenes concerned with the war. Probably because I am big fan of dramas/ movies of the Korean War....Most of the dramas and movies with the Korean War as the background are usually nicely made.

Wasn't really planning on picking up a drama anytime soon, but got sucked into BK anyway. Started at about ep. 10, and worked my way up to 18. I've started to catch up on the first few episodes too, and I think what works is not just that the cast is pretty solid and believable, it's that the back story is well played out too. The story behind the childrens' childhood is a perfect set up for how they grow up. And despite the fact that certain people reek of jealousy :P they aren't clearly evil, it's just that circumstance has 'forced' them to take the paths they've chosen.

Anyway... am savouring it (: Plus point is that it's a show about baked goods!! hehe. I'm not sure why but I always think of Goo Il Jung as the pilsbury man.

I'm reading all these comments and I'm kind of pissed off that all these people are saying that they hate it when they haven't even seen one episode. Like, get OVER it. If you don't like it, don't watch it or comment about it. There are people who love BK, and people who don't. People who don't just shouldn't comment on stuff about it. Honestly, all you haters should just not comment on it. If you don't like it, just keep it to yourself.

Kim Tak Goo is in all actuality a great drama. If you think it's too overdramatic, well then you need to look up the definition of the word Makjang. It's meant to be overdramatic people!! It's not a fricking rom-com, it's a makjang. So seriously, stop complaining about it being too overdramatic because it's supposed to be that way.

And if you think that the cast can't act well, then I think maybe you should get your ears and eyes fixed. They all have very solid acting especially YSY and Eugene. By the way, Eugene IS going to be the villain. I'm a big fan of hers and I'm quite excited for to be taking on a villain role, and shedding her "Nation's Fairy" image.

(:

Wow, I didn't expect to see so much hatred for this drama coming from people who DID NOT watch it at all. And also from Eugene's fans who can't accept the fact that she plays the antagonist female character.

Don't you people get it? Her character is more complicated than young Mi Sun. If I were offered between MS and YK char, I would pick YK. Her character is not simple. She has to play good girl, then later bad girl. Do you guys think it's easy to play her character esp. in the transition stage? She needs to convince the audience why she changes. Unlike most dramas where we see second female character is annoying right from the start. So this is something Eugene would want to do - different from what she has done before.

On the other hand, MS character is quite simple and same with leading female role in any dramas. A girl with good heart, who helps main male character all the way to his success. Having said that, I love both actresses. They portray their characters well.

And also I love the rookie Yoon Si Yoon in here. I never watch High Kick Through the Roof. This is my first time seeing him acting. So, as someone new, I would say, he is really really good. Damn good I wouldn't know he is new.

And to those who DID NOT watch BK but come in here saying bla bla bla, meh meh about this drama, you're just embarrassing yourself. Shame on you, shame on you! Yes, rating does not always equal quality. But for Baker King, I say they deserve it. Great ensemble, great acting from everyone.

As always I'm catching up late on Dramabeans posts. But it's such a convenient way for me to keep up with Kdramas.

Man, I'm hooked on BK. At first I thought it was a little dragged on, and so I skipped some episodes at the beginning to the present. What makes this appealing is this, 'makjang' is a tried and true formula that often works-- if it ain't broke don't fix it. I'm not saying it's the best drama of the year, or it's innovative and challenging, but it's this straight forwardness makes the viewers feel good. There's no over-thinking/analyzing. There an expectancy in a predictable plot that's sometimes welcomed when you come home and your brain's fried from work, and you just wanna feel the warmth of a touching moment or taking away the little life lessons taught by our poor man TG. BTW, the classic evil stepmom character, In Sook, that character is just ferocious, there's no other villain I love to hate more this year! There's still the reason behind that bitch-facade that you kind of sympathize with, but you still think she deserves everything that's coming anyway.

I totally agree with some of you out there about judging before seeing. BK is your good old fashion melodrama but freshened up with a little added depth. Of course, people who dislike melodrama isn't going to like it. So don't watch it, don't worry about it. People who didn't watch it but insist it's boring can keep their little 'reviews' to themselves. Ever heard of the saying, the smallest violin player in the world playing the saddest song?

This drama is a MUST SEE. I can't remember when I have been so hooked on a show. I look forward to Tues and Wed each week so I can see what happens next. It never disappoints.

It's more than a rags to riches story, it's a story that shows the most important riches can be achieved even when you are in rags.

Utimately not being with Eugene's character will be an unanswered prayer he will be thankful for when he falls in love with his kitchen mentor who is already so in love with him.

For me, knowing this is based on a true story makes it more compelling. There is something charming about watching this person in torn jeans who has no idea about the empire he is going to build. We watch Kim Tak Gu struggle but no matter what happens in his life, even without him knowing it sometimes, he is taking steps towards his destiny.

His success in the kitchen seems to be bigger than himself and those who will only see him as an enemy and who clench their teeth every time they are faced with the fact that only Kim Tak Gu can pull the sword from the stone and take his rightful place as the Baker King.

This isn't what I expected but now I can't stop watching. I'm more captivated by yu kyung character more than anything. I think they've added more depth to her compared to tak gu. I'm only on ep 20 but I don't view Yukyung as an evil character to me she has enough ambiguity, depth and depication that I sympatize with her. I think Eugene has done a great job I had no idea she was a singer and not originally an actress.

Mi sun I guess their had to be an opposite and Mi sun is everything Yukyung isn't cutesy pouting sister type. Nothing special to me just typical

Tak Gu- It's a little annoying that he doesn't feel like a real person. He's friendly even to his evil brother whose done nothing but lie, cheat, frame him, possibly drug him and really might not be the best person to trust. But tak gu has the mind of child or it's just a kdrama staple to be that benevolent. I do enjoy his character when he isn't being wrongly accused and victimized to the 100th degree

Poor pathetic Ma jun like everyone else I keep waiting for them to do something with his character. At some point he needs to have some grand empathy that beating Tak Gu has consumed his life and that he doesn't need to rely on tricks to win. Use your skill since you've trained so hard. In a weird way i'm rooting for him because he's been put down so much how many people will tell him he can't beat tak gu seriously. I'd be jealous too.

I have some questions about this theme of natural vs trained ability I feel as though being trained is almost a put down
Rich Elite being able to do just about anything to their employee/people in general and get away with it. assault, demean and abuse them
Why is it acceptable to call people trash, dirt, wrongfully accuse, slap, accuse them of trying sleep their to a position but not have them defend themselves? Why are you supposed to just listen and accept it? Turn the other cheek only works in theory. On screen it was almost as if being slaped wasn't the worst problem.(Gasp) defending herself was the real issue.

I keep thinking that Yu Kyung/Eugene is the evil character because she stood up and talked back to EvilMOM. Because she's angry about her past situation and being humilated/assualted. But really who wouldn't be.

i'm sorry i watched this drama only a few days ago buying the DVD since i wasn't able to watch streaming lately, i guess coz of my comp but wow this drama is indeed a WOW in every sense of the word. i also admired the child actor he was awesome & Yoon being a newcomer did an excellent perfor.
I wondered why Eugene got this i'd say small role coz she's had only a few airtime. I also didn't like her charac. here i prefer Mi sun for Tak Gu she's caring & all that but of course it's a one sided love on her part!
I still hv to finish watching but i'm glued to this one & it truly justified the rating & being a national drama too doesn't surprise me. I feel eating those bong breads now. hahaha

The best drama I've seen so far~ My whole family loves it! It's a heart-warming story that each family member can relate to.. No wonder why my dad stayed up until 1 o'clock in the morning to finish the last 5 episodes...

Baker King truly touches my heart..It shows the struggles of being a mother, the challenges of being a father, the desire of a child to be loved... It makes us realize that the most important thing in life is not fame nor money, but those people who love you.

Best Drama I've seen ever... It is really funny seeing all the previous posts which are very bitter!!! Fantards are very narrow minded and did not appreciate the beauty of the story. They can't accept how rookie Yoon Si Yoon beat the hell out of Lee Seung Gi, So Ji Sub, Kim Nam Gil, Kim Hyun Joong and others hahahhaah and he even went home this year with so many awards from the drama! He was even nominated as Best Actor in the Baeksang Awards which every actors aspires!!!!

I just want to say that this is the best drama I have ever watched since My Name is Kim Sam Soon. In fact it surpasses even that. Sometimes the simplest stories are the most heartwarming. I cannot even count how many times I cried buckets watching this. After it ended, I was left with an empty feeling because it made me want to crawl into the TV screen, it is just that frikkin good! It's one of the few dramas that has taught me actual life lessons. There is much to learn from that boy Kim Tak Gu. "Just because today was bad, my life isn't over. Everything is in the past, because I just have to live."

Seriously inspirational stuff, no? And the cast was perfect. S-t-e-l-l-a-r. I would recommend it just for Yoon Si-yoon himself. He absolutely shines.

Anywho, I'm going to recommend it to all my friends and they too will lose sleep over wanting to keep watching this 24/7. But they will thank me for it. <3

So, people probably don't read this anymore since the drama is over a year old, but I just want to say to all of those comments that were going on and on about how it was "a fresh and exciting drama," and "different from most other korean dramas," the people who wrote the comments probably have not seen very many korean dramas, or at least have not seen a great variety of korean dramas, because this is completely unoriginal.

GRRR...it makes me so angry that people think this is a good drama and that it has good actors. First of all, the main actor Yoon si yoon or whatever his name is, cannot act. (I watched the drama, btw...it was painful). He was totally unbelievable and really very elementary in his acting style. It seemed like the director was telling him exactly what facial expressions to make and exactly how to say a phrase, like they do to little kids. And Eugene was so flat. The most boring performance I have ever seen in my life. Let's see, who else. Oh, the guy who plays Ma Jun also seemed like a newbie actor, he was better than Takgu, but he wasn't very good. The girl, i forgot her name, who ends up being TakGu's love interest seems to be an okay actress, the problem lies in her character. Her character is nice, but a bit annoying and flat at times. The guy who played the father was the only good actor, in my opinion, but his character sucked. He always rejected ma jun, and even though i didn't like ma jun, that really got on my nerves.

As for the storyline, it could have been great, but ended up being really really really flat and uncreative. There were so many directions they could have taken with takgu and his special nose ability and love of bread, but they didn't take it anywhere. Honestly, even at the end of the story, I didn't see why the drama was titled "baker king kim tak gu" because he was definitely no baker king.

Again, GRRR to all those koreans who gave this drama high ratings and GRRR to all of you who claim that this is a good drama and try to pull out your fancy reviewing when in reality you're just saying it is good because the koreans liked it and it got high ratings.

If you want an actually "fresh" korean drama, one that was done in 2010, and also got good ratings, go watch Giant. This drama was very well done, had a great cast of actors (literally all of the actors were good), a great, solid, and super-involving storyline, and one of the best villains I have ever seen in an asian drama (maybe even the best) and one of the best villain performances I have ever seen. Props go to Jung Bo Suk for that one.

But, really, if you think Kim Tak Gu is a great drama and deserved it super high ratings and that it's got a "fresh" story and good acting, go watch some more dramas and tv shows. You need to branch out a bit more to see what you're missing.
