Joseon X-Files premieres next week on tvN

In another week, we’ll see the premiere of a new cable drama, tvN’s Joseon X-Files [기찰비록], and here’s a slew of stills from the sci-fi sageuk mystery series, as well as the official poster. Kim Ji-hoon plays the skeptic and Im Jung-eun is the believer, as the two encounter mysterious phenomena like UFOs and try to make sense of it all.
Plus! Kim Gab-soo also stars as the de facto leader of a secret organization of the king; his character is a mysterious man who conducts the affairs of the group from within his dark tent. Kim recently portrayed his sweet, gentle side as the loving stepfather in Cinderella’s Sister, but he’s also fantastic at playing villains and creeps (Hon, Partner), and it’s always fun watching him onscreen.
Joseon X-Files will air on Friday nights, and its first broadcast on the 20th will air two back-to-back episodes. There are 12 episodes in all.

LOL! When we were talking about this show, we kept calling Kim Gab Soo "Joseon cigarette smoking man" and it turns out in the photos he's "Joseon pipe smoking man!!"
MWAHAHAHAH!

Wow, a great cast plus UFO's! What more can anyone ask for?! hahahaha

Seriously? A Cigarette Smoking Man? Is that on purpose? I'm kind of torn between "that's awesome!" and "man, what a rip off." A Joseon era take on CSM. Could be cool, I guess, but I just don't see it being cool as the original.
Which makes me wonder, is this actually being touted in the Korean press as a spin on the X Files, or is it just a comparison that seems obvious to Western watchers? I know the show was a cultural icon of the 90s, but I really don't know how well-known it is world wide. Anyone?

It doesn't have any "official" relation to X-Files but it is being promoted as "Joseon X-Files," and I would say that overt similarities are intentional. Like the Scully/Mulder dynamic of the believer/nonbeliever pairing and so forth.

And now, apparently there's also the shadowy syndicate of conspirators (who are all old men), secretly backed by the highest civil authority in the land? A group led by a sinister and mysterious man who likes to smoke? Yep, that's pretty overt.
Still, the period setting is quite different, and could be an interesting fusion I guess.

Is there a huge difference between network and cable shows in Korea like there is in the states? Like the cable channels can get away with a bit more?

Cable dramas can in fact get away with a lot more, in terms of violence, sex, and language. In fact if you've only ever seen broadcast station dramas you might be startled at how much racier the cable content is. The romance stuff on broadcast shows is very tame, but cable goes the other extreme and it's like you're watching HBO.
Some differences are that cable shows air late at night, say midnight, and get MUCH smaller viewerships (1% for a cable show, for instance, is a strong showing). However, I think the flipside is that some shows overdo the racy stuff just because they can (in a bid to be edgy) and the quality is therefore not quite there.
Some cable dramas do get a solid following, like the Chosun Police (three seasons now) and Rude Miss Young-ae (seven, I think?). Harvest Villa and Someday were also cable.

i know that its better to exchange the role of scully and mulder, but i wish they didn't change it here, specifically because of Kim Ji Hoon, if he is the Scully of the series, we will get another toughie act from him, which he always portrays in drama. but nonetheless i like to see this drama :D

Awesome :). Scully got me hooked on the X-files. I think Kim will stand out more as a main lead playing a similar role to Scully than Mulder. I want to see it from his point of view.
