Kim Ah-joong in U.S.-Chinese film project Amazing
by | August 22, 2010 | 36 Comments

Kim Ah-joong (200 Pound Beauty, Accidental Couple) has been cast in a joint U.S. and Chinese film project, which is titled Amazing. It is described as a “sports adventure movie” that deals with the “internet virtual-reality world” and boasts a budget of 20 billion won, which comes to roughly 17 million USD.

In Amazing, Kim plays the love interest to Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming (The Return of the Condor Heroes, The Banquet); her character is noted for her sharp intellect. Huang plays the CTO (chief technology officer) of the world’s top internet game development company, and American actor Eric Mabius (Ugly Betty) has also been cast.

The plot involves the development of a basketball virtual-reality internet game, and appearances from real NBA basketball stars are expected, including Yao Ming and Magic Johnson. The movie travels between reality of the real-word and virtual kind and explores a new fusion of genres. The production house behind the film is Shanghai Film Group and the movie will be directed by Sherwood Hu of the lauded Prince of the Himalayas, which was a period epic based on Hamlet set in Tibet.

Amazing began filming on the 15th — Kim recently flew to China, where she is currently shooting — and is planning for release in the first half of 2011.

Er… this sounds weird.

Wow, weird is a good choice of words for the structure. Who knows, though? Could be a hit. Let’s hope so for the talent involved.

  3. Fasiris Fay

    extremely weird!

Huang Xiao-ming?! OMG, I love him from Summer’s Desire (which I’m watching right now)! It’s such a surprise to hear this. I shall look out for this one…

    ewwwwww i hate Huang Xiao-ming

    • 6.1 lavenderskye

Same here! Don’t like him at all! He’s so arrogant!

    • 6.2 Carinne

He’s alright! He really does a good job looking like Luo Xi from Summer’s Desire manhua.

I will not buy into HXM better replacing Andy Lau as Yang Guo. No, never!!

KAJ’s smile is quite big. I can see her gums inflamed red; healthy gums are pink color and not puffy. Someone is not taking care of her oral hygienes with all those veneers/crowns. I can’t help it, one of my cousins is a dentist, and I use to help him out in his first office. She better visit her dentist real soon.^ __ ^

Hahaha I love how you said everything I felt while reading this in one sentence.

    Er… This sounds weird.

I think the desire to do something different and new is so huge people are going to extremes.

It’s just so weird, we have Daniel Meade and Jenny/Hanna and Magic Johnson.

It’s such a peculiar cast ensemble. Not to mention the premise of the film itself.

    Hmmm…. I’ll have to wait and see…

  8. last_thread

    ….what IS this? it sounds really… bizarre…

  9. Ashley

How the hell did Eric Mabius end up in this? I am so confused.

  10. 10 kaedejun

sounds like a hot mess like that dragon wars movie – or whatever it was called – mixed with a bit of gerard butler’s “gamer” movie

  11. 11 Selli

Um…what is the sense of this movie? XD I don’t get it O_O If they want to show how people can get caught up in the virtual world, maybe basketball isn’t really the best example XDDD

I really wish Kim Ah-joong would colour her hair black again, or just let it grow back D:

  12. 12 nana

huh? that’s really the best plot they could come up with? i agree, it sounds pretty odd.

  13. 13 danni

Yeahhh, this is just really weird.

  14. 14 ed

it’s like some weird mix of past chinese “teen” movies: pk.com.cn, kung fu dunk, & princess-d.
    bring on the lolz :D

  15. 15 schreber

Seems like a twisted version of the Korean film “Who Are You” from 2002. The though the thought of a sports related comedy/romance reeks of a direct-to-video release. It doesn’t help that the film, as far as this article is concerned, doesn’t really have an A-list cast nor anyone that your average American cinema viewer would know (beyond the aforementioned basketball players).

  16. 16 hanjiyoon

… what’s the main language of this film?

Or is there even going to be a main language. LOL.

I agree that it does sound a bit unusual.. but I guess it’s something that would be amusing to watch? Hm, let’s hope so.

Funny how so many people are saying this sounds weird yet no one said anything like that about the upcoming k-drama Secret Garden which has a similar premise? O.o

    • 18.1 alphabet soup

It’s weird because if this is a collaboration between china and the u.s. with korean stars and random american/chinese cameos, what language will they then be speaking? aaaaanddd adding basketball to the plot is kind of funny/more random. Or at least I’m pretty sure this is why everyone thinks it’s weird? It’s why I did lol.

      • 18.1.1 Kobe

Ohhhh…so it’s the basketball that makes it weird eh? I see how it is. You know basketball is incredibly popular in China and apparently there are more Chinese people in the world who watch the NBA than Americans!

As for this being a multi-national movie….isn’t that the trend? There are quite a few movies and dramas produced by 2 or more countries these days. The actors will probably speak their native languages and we will see multiple subtitles on screen. Ok, I admit this is getting weird lol

  19. 19 @lfani

this is great!! I can’t wait to see more of Kim Ah Joong in the movie… I bet she’ll be part of the virtual world with her plastic look :)

  26. 26 suz

    she’s prettty~~
but looks red as a tomato keke

  27. 27 LifeIsPrecious

Honestly, I’m more excited for Eric Mabius to be in this movie than most of the other actors/actresses. What can I say? I’m a fan of Ugly Betty. The plot’s interesting, but it has to be handled well, because this can easily turn into a hot mess.

  28. 28 Eva

I wonder how many translators will be needed on site, lol

  29. 29 bahar
