Newbie actress Ki Eun-sae joins The Musical

The Musical (starring Gu Hye-sun, Ok Joo-hyun, Daniel Choi, and Park Ki-woong) has just cast newbie actress Ki Eun-sae in a crucial supporting role. She’ll play second-lead in a love triangle between Gu Hye-sun and Park Ki-woong, as well as carry some of the melo aspects of the story, along with the two female leads.

This isn’t Ki’s first time on screen, however, as she is a CF fixture these days, starring in as many as eight commercials in one season, including one for SK Telecom. She also had a minor role in the film The Good, the Bad, the Weird as an opium den gisaeng.

The producers were impressed with her intelligent image in her audition, and cast her in the dramatic role, despite her relative newness. I don’t know what it means to “appear intelligent,” since I’d care more whether she IS intelligent or isn’t, so thanks for reinforcing the stereotype that actresses need only “appear” to be something, Korean media. (Okay, rant over.)

She’ll play a professional woman who works hard to protect her love. Hopefully she’ll be able to hold her own, and inject some dimension into the second female lead.

The Musical is currently in production, and has yet to find a broadcaster and premiere date.

Actually, I don't really see anything wrong with citing an actress's ability to imbue her roles with intelligence as a selling point, since we all know they're actresses like Kim Tae Hee who we know ARE very intelligent in real life but can't translate that sharpness to their image/roles. If Kim Tae-hee played an elite scientist, would we, as the audience, really buy into that character, even though we know the actress playing her is very smart? It's a skill to convey that intelligence and gravitas in your acting.
