Cha Seung-won in recovery following surgery

A few conflicting reports are making the rounds today, so here are the nuts and bolts and you can make of them what you will:

In mid-September, Cha Seung-won left the Japan shoots for his upcoming drama Athena when he contracted an acute bacterial virus infection, and now reports state that his condition had grown more serious, requiring surgery. Currently, Cha is in recovery following the surgery at a Kangnam hospital in Seoul.

Shortly after the latest wave of news articles broke, his management came out to refute claims that his health was in a worsened state, saying on September 30 that Cha has improved, and that “He has continued his hospitalization at the hospital’s recommendation that he wait until he has made a complete recovery. It is not that he has worsened. He’s healthy enough to be discharged right now.”

Hm… methinks there’s a little overstating going on with both sides. On the upside, if that means Cha’s health is in better condition than the alarmist tone of some of those early articles, that can only be a good thing.

His illness began on the 12th when he arrived in Japan and came down with a severe fever and allergies, and headed straight back home for treatment. As a result, the script of Athena was rewritten to accommodate the fact that he would miss a large chunk of filming, with some reports calling it a “state of emergency” for the drama. Other reports quote a production rep stating that Cha’s non-participation in Japan shoots is not a big deal and that they have wrapped up filming there.

According to a source with Cha’s management, he plans to return to work in early October. Athena premieres on SBS in December.

Let's hope he'll recover swiftly and won't start working again too early. With an infection in the body, one can't be too careful.

I just hope that the management would just say what his illness is and stop beating around the bush. The more they keep it,the deeper speculations will become and it won't hurt his career if they just say it out straight...hope he gets well soon...

Honestly, this sounds ominous. I had a friend die from acute failure of organs following a "minor" infection/bacteria. What seems worrisome is the surgery. If he had surgery because of an infection...that's not good. But i am not a doctor, just someone who has experienced (not personally, thank goodness) what bacteria can do to a body.

thank you! i was trying to figure out how one would need surgery for an infection -- it didn't compute. But now that you (not a dr. but you play one in DBLand) have explained it, it sounds much more serious. =.=;;

Cha Seung Won get well soon and take your time for a complete recovery.

Anytime someone is admitted to the hospital and then has surgery it's serious. It also makes me think back to when Athena was first filming and he joined the cast later.

I hope he will rest and take all the time needed to get back his health.

Okay, this report REALLY confused me, so I called my daddy. He's not and MD, but he does have a Ph.D. in Veterinary Science, and this is what he said:

Bacterias can get viruses, but they don't affect humans. It is possible that this could be a Staph infection if surgery was required, but that would necessitate amputation. It is more likely that Asian media and not Asian doctors are making this report, because it didn't sound like anything he had ever heard of (and I'm going to put some trust in my daddy at this point, as he has held medical conferences in Japan and Thailand).

Mostly, my daddy was just confused even though I read the report to him word for word. He put a few more scenarios of what it could be out there, but my mind is not a science mind and it slipped through one ear and out the other.

either way (reports over- or under-exaggerating) i just wish CSW a speedy recovery and return to health. even if that means he has to drop out of Athena or his part is reduced. the last thing i would want is for him to rush his treatment to return to acting and then fall sick again!!

i'm not a very religious person, but this news worries me-CSW is one of my favorite actors (korean or otherwise)-so he and his family are in my thoughts and prayers.

A bacterial virus infection? Is it a bacterial infection or a viral infection? Either way, it must have progressed to sepsis....

lol, I found it odd too. Let's hope it's just a misconception and he actually didn't get both kinds of infections. It wouldn't be funny that's for sure.

i work in the medical field, and a viral infection is something you can't treat with surgery unless its in a decaying state and there's not much to do but to get it surgically remove. i wonder what he actually got and hopefully he'll have a speedy recovery.

a bacterial infection that requires SURGERY sounds really bad. What would they have to operate on? take out? put in?? replace? at like 40, he's still too young to get so sick that he needs surgery. I hope Cha Seung Won makes a fully recovery!

Yep, it just sounds terrible. He is still young and has a family to feed.

Korea should really reconsider shooting their dramas in real time. Finish shooting than broadcast the show!
