Here’s some historical background info for SKKS from soompi:
In explaining what is the “Geum Deung Ji Sa,” you must first understand basic history. First, late King Yeongio had a son, Crown Prince Sado. The king ordered him to be killed sealed alive in a large rice chest. The prince starved to death in the rice chest after several days. It was reported that the king had the prince killed because the prince was mentally ill and engaged in erratic killing of people, and the king could not tolerate it any longer. However, there are rumors that the prince was actually a victim of a political conspiracy created by the Noron party, and that before his own death, King Yeongjo expressed that his biggest regret was the killing of his own son. Geum Deung Ji Sa is a book supposedly written by King Yeongjo explaining the true circumstances surrounding Crown Prince Sado’s death, and the role played by the Norons.
Now, in Sungkyunkwan, the current king is King Jeongjo (aka Yi San), the son of Crown Prince Sado and the grandson of the late King Yeongjo. There is a political power struggle between King Jeongjo and the Noron party. If Geum Deung Ji Sa gets in the hands of the king, this would give grounds for the king to punish the Noron party members for the political conspiracy which resulted in his own father’s death. (King Jeongjo might suspect of the political conspiracy, but without the book, there would be no proof of it.) It would serve two purposes: 1) retribution for his father, and 2) regain the power back from the Noron party. So this explains why the Norons would want to get rid of the book (in fact, they deny the existence of such a thing because if it exists, then that would give support to the existence of a conspiracy), and most importantly, want to keep the book from getting into the king’s hands.
The significance of the fact that this drama takes place during the reign of King Jeongjo is that King Jeongjo is regarded as one of the greatest kings of Joseon. One of his biggest achievements as king is to open up government positions to those who were barred in the past because of their social status. (ex. poor noblemen scholars like Kim Yoon Shik)

nope! right now, the only people in sungkyunkwan that know she’s a girl are yong-ha and now the cool teacher. but both jae-shin and sun-joon have seen yoon-hee in her girl form.
I was always wondering if yong-ha knew she was a girl or not. He seems to catch on faster than others and has the suspicion that she’s a girl, but doesn’t have enough proof for that. How do you know yong-ha knows she’s a girl already?

She fell and he caught her. Saw her adam’s appless neck and deduced she was a girl. He gave the look and said he felt something for that guy without being worried so yea, quite obvious he knows. What I liked about the show is that it really doesn’t give the audience everything so I kinda feel smart and engaged when I know something. BUT there are a lot of stuffs, connections that I am unclear of. Especially when they talk about KYS’s father and the book without a proper intro. I completely do not understand what they are talking about. Other than that I think its fine. It feels like you missed a few eps but are getting along with the show.

I just can’t understand how “Baker King”‘s got such high ratings, the way that “Cinderella Unnie” did – so slow, so unreal, so WTF, so I-wanna-slap-them-all-especially-the-writer. Plus BK’s storyline is sickening (rape, attempted or achieved murders, suicide, etc) but it’s like nobody cares. O_O
On the other hand, “Playful kiss” has had such bad reviews and low ratings, while it has very unexpectedly gained me over. My initial fear of a mess due to Kim Hyun Joong’s acting skills has vanished because he has improved a lot. Plus, I usually don’t watch high school dramas, since I’m almost twice older these teenage characters, but it is refreshing, tho I sometimes wish to scold Baek Seung Ko a bit for being so rude and harsh – heck his parents should admonish him much more, especially about Oh Ha Ni. ^^
Everybody has a different opinion for a certain drama, some might like this, some might prefer the that. But things won’t change, Baker King is a HIT, Playful Kiss is a flop PERIOD. Just accept it, get over it and just enjoy watching your favorite drama.
I actually enjoy baker king a lot so it’s a matter of preference. Playful Kiss is annoying and stupid but the lead girl is super cute. I counldn’t get pass the 1st episode so I just stopped watching it. Sk is pretty entertaining though. PK is definetly a miss for me!
i dont think BK is a hit …yes ratings wise…but this does not make it a GOOD drama….as a well made drama it has a lot lacking…the plot has a lot of holes, the characters are somewhat the typical, the acting has a lot to be desired…as someone who is watching this show i understand where it will get its popularity, through the never failing themes of revenge, underdog stories, romance etc…but my most biggest complaint is that it doesn’t achieve anything new…it almost exploits its viewers and hence gaining its popularity becos of these overused but addicting storylines

Me too, PK has won me over because of the cute storyline and slice-of-life plot. It doesn’t have anything extreme so I don’t have to worry about angst over the usually kdrama stuff such as evil mother, jealous-turned-evil second lead, amnesia etc. This way we can just relax and concentrate on the budding romance between Seung-jo and Hani. And it really is wonderful that the mother is so supportive of them- she has become my fave character!
I enjoy Seungjo being mean actually. He knows he’s smart/hot/sporty and that Hani likes him; and he manipulates her because of that. Especially the scene where he played mind tricks on her to pass the baton to him-woah that was sneaky! But I like that he’s starting to care for her now, instead of the other versions where he only did quite some time later.
The only problem I have with this show are Hani’s friends. They’re kinda thick and unaware of Hani’s situation, if you get what I mean.. :S
okay la, at least Baker King doesn’t tie you on a leash and dangle food in your face. Cinderella’s stepsis is just annoyingly long with too many plot dragging tech. At least Baker King has some fun bits and slowly introduces each part of the characters. Plus the plot HAS plot, like the competition. It’s ending on kbs world but I actually think there is more to unravel in the story. Revenge of the gumiho is more like cinderella stepsis, very draggy. Run here, run there; hide here, hide there. The scene when the kid became a gumiho and didn’t want to let herself be found and saved made the draggy plot more obvious. But at least revenge of gumiho has a lot of action scenes that keep you engaged.
I haven’t posted on open thread in a while. I’m in Berlin now doing a teaching assistantship at a ballet and acrobatic school. Haven’t started yet…but orientation was this past week from Monday til Thursday. Do other people feel burdened and overwhelmed when meeting too many people in one setting? The superficiality of staying focused in being friendly and hoping people will like you too is always massively tiring.
Just be yourself, and the people who recongnize a kindred spirit are the ones you want around you. Good luck!!
I started working at a hospital recently, and feel the same way!! I feel like I need to meet up with my old friends. I find it really tiring, but am hoping that it’ll get easier with time. But I always think that as long as I’m not doing anything wrong, then it doesn’t matter what others think (unless they’re people I care about) saves me alot of headaches, as you can’t please everyone. Good luck with it, it sounds really cool!

I start working at a bank this week and feel tired being friendly, afraid of being considered cold or hard to talk/ work with.
I can get up early and prepare a lunch box but everybody go out for lunch, it’s quite expensive but not delicious (to me). I want to stay at the office with my lunch box but I go out with them.
I do not know what should be right.
You’re doing right, don’t worry about it. You save money and generally eat a lot healthier. After a while, people will start eating with you too, especially after they go over their budgets. I used to be the only one at my work to bring my lunch, but people started bringing theirs when they saw that I was there eating mine. Be a leader!!!

I sat down and marathoned SS last night and had a blast. Really good drama, covering quite deep topics plus a cast of talented, good looking actors and actresses. I think the comparisons with BBF is not fair – this one is I think deeper and better acted overall. I watched half of BBF and I lost interest. Also, the music is brilliant – love the opening score to Episode 1.

I had some lovely beer tonight with my fabulous flatmate so I’ve had some cheering up ^_^
yup I think its more like a smarter and deeper version of hana kimi. But you can’t compare to BBF cus its set in different periods. Back then the rich were powerful in politics so it’s easier to “go deep” but now it is different. BBF korean version is good because of the scenery and the way they expanded upon the story unlike the taiwan and jap version which were already immensely successful.
I absolutely love Playfull Kiss! I just watched eps 3-4 and it is just so cute and light and …playful!
Kim Hyun Joong has improved a lot ..he needs to watch the angry bug eyes but he is using more of his body now to show anger and is doing a good job!

Today I was on the bus back home from work, and as I looked at the rain splattered on the windows I thought of “fox rain” and I played the song. It was an interesting beat in time. Haha, I love when dramas can come into my real life.
It’s been raining for the past two days, I think all the gumihos around the world are having a crying session. I’ll never think of rain the same way again. I’ve always loved rainy days though. I find them magical, and filled with possibilities and excitement. I’m always happy when it rains, while everyone around me complains about getting wet. To me it’s a way of cleansing our earth, and sometimes ourselves.
Enough about rain, Vampire Diaries is back, and Glee starts on the 21st. I am super duper happy to watch my shows again, but with all the good dramas coming out I am going to be glued to my screen.
I too have been won over by Kim Hyung Joon’s acting! I barely paid him any attention at all in BOF (despite his pretty face) but now I squeal at everything he does *.*. Playful kiss has been quite an enjoyable watch so far in the sense that it’s pure entertaining with no emotional baggage (I don’t know about you guys but too much angst really drags me down :/). I’m also really glad the crazy daydreaming has stopped \o/ (unless the end of ep 4 … D:).
I’m also looking forward to more SKW scandal hehe I love awkward situations involving gender confusion.

hoho….PK ep 3 & 4 were seriously cool, i actually find a few moments very touching and poignant, like when the 2 dads were singing, and when Hani offered the cold water to SJ, i can feel that she really really like him so much and just wanted the best for him, honestly, there’ve been so much melodrama these days, PK is really a breath of fresh air, and i actually find KHJ evolving, he’s alot more natural and i actually feel like he’s BSJ now!
Fingers crossed, i really hope EP5 will be even better!

But the way the plot is moving forward and the humor and the intellegence they have actually endowed the heroes with is amazing. love the comedy its very similar to an actual hostel atmosphere. loved the proff too. would love to hear spoilers on the novel it was based on ( please make me korean in my next birth…..). but currently having a lot of fun. Jaeshin is the first to find out Yoonhee’s real identity, on a night of celebration where they had drinks and Jaeshin carried her back to the hostel and removed the clothes to allow better comfort. He didn’t return to the dorm for a while after that.
Yongha’s supposedly married in the novel, but hadn’t seen his wife for a few years, leaving him deprived and resulting in his womanising ways.
Yoonhee and Sunjoon got married in the end.

They’ve already tweaked many things for the first 4 episodes.
Like the scene where Jaeshin covered Yoonhee’s eyes while protecting her from the thugs in episode 1, it was Sunjoon who did it in the novel. But Jaeshin did appear to fight off some thugs before Sunjoon appeared and the line where Jaeshin told Yoonhee that he would never like to see her again in the drama was directed to Sunjoon in the novel.
And the way Sunjoon and Yoonhee met was totally peaceful and amicable in the novel, unlike the drama.
Sunjoon’s also sickeningly gentle in the novel. >.<

This week I’ve been happily overdosing myself on k-dramas – not only am I still watching Playful Kiss and MGIG, but I’ve spent the last week watching The Painter of the Wind, which has turned out to be so much better than I expected.
Feels like I have at least a couple of things to look forward to, as well – between Cyrano Dating Agency, Athena and Rain’s drama (is it Plan B now?) this is the first time in a while that I won’t feel bereft when my current dramas end!
@Dele – I agree about the rain. It’s been raining here in intervals mixed with sunshine this week, and I keep thinking about our sweet Gumiho. Leave it to kpop to make me sentimental about a weather event…

Man, how much am I loving MGiaG? Too much. This show is having such an effect on me. The more I watch Mi-ho, the handsier I get. The hubby and I went for a jog this morning and when we were done I was feeling high on life, and I tried to skinship him right there by the lake. Not actual hoi-hoi, mind you, just skinshipping. He’s a man (obviously), so you’d think he’d be allover it, but noooo. I’d grab him, he’d squirm away, I’d grab him again, he’d pull me off him. Lather-rinse-repeat. He was laughing the entire time (dork) so I know he wasn’t actually bothered, but from the way he was carrying on I’m sure people running by thought I was some crazy stranger biatch trying to molest him. This went on for almost five minutes, y’all! I ended up having to chase my own husband all the way back to our house because he wouldn’t let me near him. Le sigh… you know you’re too far gone when your man starts fighting you off. He’s totally sleeping on the couch tonight. Scratch that — the couch is too good for him. He’s sleeping out on the curb. *pout*
In non-Kdrama news, holy moly I’m excited about the True Blood season finale on Sunday. Eric and Russell have been too epic for words, ending up handcuffed together in the sunlight! I’m almost afraid to see what’s going to happen there. I don’t want the season to end.

As for using jealousy to induce skinship, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it backfired. I could probably tell the boy that I was going to be out all night with Dong-joo Teacher, and he’d be all, “Cool. Have fun. ” Aigoo. OK, not really. He’d mostly likely beat Dong-joo Teacher to a pulp … then make me chase after him again. LOL.

I agree with that I wouldn’t go for Dong-joo either. I’m compulsive about control, and the minute someone is trying to handle me, I would bash them over the head with a giant chicken leg. Also, MGiaG is totally doing a number on me. Everyone is good looking, but it’s really Mi-ho and Woong-ah that are getting to me. It’s all the unrealized skinship. They touch each other All The Time, and whereas before it was cute, now it’s almost frustrating for me. Now that Dae-woong is hyper-aware of Mi-ho and falling in love with her, I’m antsy for some goings-on. How embarrassing.

Mr. Lahlita is a computer geek as well, but he loves sports and playing music … and the similarity to Seung-jo ends right there. When I was younger I dreamed of meeting someone like SJ; a mysterious, perfect man who was cold on the outside, while bothered by and burning with passion for me on the inside. And our romance would be epic and hot and full of heaving bosoms, as he struggled with his desire….
But nope, I got Mr. Lahlita instead! LOL. While we’re likening our husbands to Kdrama heroes, Mr. Lahlita is like Min-jae (Kim Bum) from The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry. Emotionally fearless and incredibly direct. When we met there was no suppressing or trying to be cool like SJ. He just laid it down, all “When can I see you again?” “What?” “I really like you. How do you feel about me?” “…I’ve only known you for five hours?” “Ah, yes. I can see how that could be a bit soon — then we’ll just have to hang out All The Time until you decide to lock me down.” HAHAHA. If all men were like him, there would never be Kdramas. Or ANY dramas. Kyah.

I’ve found that when my husband doesn’t want to do PDAs, it is more effective to torture him by sleeping on his side of the bed than actually kicking him out of it. Or more accurately, in the middle of the bed, sprawled out all over so that he can’t get comfortable. Also, this way he can’t complain that I kicked him to the curb/couch.
I have to go dump my teenager at some other poor unsuspecting mother’s house now. Have a great weekend!

I’m glad my pain provides fodder for laughter. Yeesh. Is there anything sadder than a woman having to chase her hubby around for some lovin’? Ah, but it was all in good fun. At some points he was laughing so hard that he could barely breathe, which of course made me laugh. Then I’d clamp down on the giggles and lunge for him, at which point he’d freak out and evade, then he’d stop running and bend over in a laughing fit again, at which point I’d just give up again and lose it as well. Your brother-in-law certainly keeps it lively. I’d been aiming for some sweet lakeside action, but the chase home (if you can call laughingly drunken stumbles a chase) was fun as well.
And yes, True Blood has been epic, although I admit to Eric-focused tunnel vision where that show is concerned (Alexander Skarsgård for the mothereffing WIN). The best episodes EVER for me are “Timebomb” (2.08) and “I Will Rise Up” (2.09) where Godric met the sun. I think “I Will Rise Up” was, and will forever be, the apex for that show. I actively read Television Without Pity, and I remember that that episode produced 45 pages of incredible discussion, and several more pages on the Eric thread. I’ve watched that one episode more times than I can count. RIP Godric. Oh, Eric. Sigh. And now here we are at the end of season three, and Pam is stuck having to watch her maker die, unable to comfort or go to him, the same way Eric wasn’t able to be there for Godric’s end.

Obviously Eric will survive, and I’m sure the daywalking will lead into the Eric Amnesia storyline for season four. I’m looking forward to it. However, it’s such a tug on the heartstrings.

It was a short work week, but felt like such a long week at the same time! Thank goodness for MGiaG and PK to keep me going.
I am pleasantly surprised by PK. I did not expect much at all (diehard ISWAK fan here), but after @ockoala mentioned how she was enjoying it, i decided to give it a spin. And I’m so glad I did! KHJ has definitely improved since his BOF days. After 4 eps, I am excited to see what’s next. So far it doesn’t seem to have strayed to much from ISWAK’s story and timeline (I haven’t read the manga or watched the j-version) and I’m loooving the relationship b/w Ha Ni and the mom.
Also, I am totally MGiaG’s b**ch. The level of cuteness has gone above and beyond and i am loving it all. <3
@ lovenyc52 – hey! did you get my message in the last OT? How was your ISA experience? Mine was pretty crazy. i went to the workshop 4theC was putting on (and effectively became the oldest person there >__<; ) and got to meet and interact with them! Wong Fu, FarEastmovement, Jennifer Chung, Ryan Higa (my new crush)…and a lot more were all there. It was all pretty crazy. How about you?

i think i posted in the last OT about my awesome ISA experience. but omggggg you got to meet them? When I was in line (my friend and i were totally the oldest there, next to the parental units there with their underage children), Wes came out and all the girls screamed. I squealed on the inside and waved at him like a dummy. And then Ted came around with his camera and screams once again ensued (and once again, the waving like a dummy). I totally crush on Wes – he is so adorbs. I think if Phil had come out, a riot may have occurred. But that’s the closest I got to them haha.
You got to see Ted propose to his gf, right?? Who knew Ted was even dating anyone?! I just assumed they were all single cuz they are too busy to date. Let’s just let me stay ignorant cuz if I found out Wes was dating someone, I think I’d cry a lil haha.
What I loved about the LA show was that not only was it a WongFu production and we got to see Jay perform (man have I missed that guy), but Quest also performed and they are just so amazing. I swear B.Hirano is hotter now than he was back in college ha. In addition to that, WongFu also produced a short about Ted’s engagement and the battle to be Best Man. It was a show full of win. Oh and NigaHiga’s upcoming collab with WongFu has got me excited as well.

Like the stalker that I am, I knew that Ted was dating someone in NY, but I never thought they’d be getting married so soon! When Ted first came on he stuttered “I wanna introduce someone special” My thought process: “Pepper? *girl walks out* hey..that’s not pepper”…ppl quicker on the uptake then I get the idea and start screaming while I’m thinking, “where’s pepper….what’s he doing………OH MY GAWWWDDD!!!!!” The ENTIRE HALL went BALLISTIC! It was crazy, but oh so sweet. ^^ Like a kdrama fairytale come true *giggles*
But yea, sadly Phil has a gf too
Wes is the only one without a gf (that I know of…which is fine by me ~__^) When Wes announces his gf, I think I’m gonna cry. 
The heavens must’ve been on my side that weekend because I somehow got assigned WongFu’s workshop and I sat directly in front of them and they looked right at me when they talked and it was totally maaaggiiiicc. *twinkly eyes* But seriously, they were amazing to meet and talk to. Very down to earth and humble about their success – I think they’re more amazed by it then we are. In the workshop they taught us about little tricks in filming..and a whole bunch of other stuff too..but to be honest I was too busy staring at Wes to hear clearly (email me if you want some of the goods ~__^).
It was funny because at the NY concert there was a balcony so while waiting every once in awhile someone would pop out to wave to the fans and everyone would start screaming and taking pictures like mad like they were true celebrities. And just a couple of years ago they were just plainjane folks on the internet with a camera. It all felt very surreal.

Hahaha. Hey everyone. Eid Mubarak! I’m really glad that no matter how out of place I sometimes feel in the real world, when I step in to dramaland, I find so many kindred spirits.
I thought I was among the few who enjoys PK and SKKS since the ratings are low and all. This is a pleasant surpise. I am really enjoying PK and SKKS more than I expected to and way more that MGIAG/IAL. I’ve seen and obsessed about ISWAK five years back so I thought I had gotten all of that out of my system. But now I find myself back to my obsessive ways of watching PK korean raws even if I don’t understand korean. Oh no. SKKS is also picking up very well – how could they not with eyecandy all over the show! SKKS reminds me of Hana Kimi and I’m really excited for the recaps!
Here’s wishful thinking that someone would summarize the SKKS novel!

I’m totally loving My Girlfriend is a Gumiho right now. But what’s even more awesome is my self-control. I could have stayed up late night watching it after work but I resisted. Instead I read the drama recaps and am going to enjoy watching it tonight.

I have to agree with some people here that Sungkyunkwan is a heart-stealer. I had finally checked it out earlier this week and was really impressed. From the earlier recaps, I knew it wasn’t like some sageuk Hanakimi rehash or sageuk style BOF, but I was still blown away by the quality of the drama- acting, script, music, etc… Though i didn’t really have much opinion about the title before, now I feel like including Scandal in the title is a bit misleading. Yes, she’s a girl impersonating her brother, but to call it a scandal seems too trite. There is just something really epic about this drama. I feel like most of the students will learn and grow (maybe except for those lackeys) and I am excited for them all. It really makes me miss the campus life i had during undergrad.
And I totally dig Park Min Young/Kim Yoon Hee/Kim Yoon

I hope people who don’t watch PK will stop leaving bad comments. I watched Gumiho/SScandal too and I love all of them. For me, I will not leave bad comments for drama that I will never watch. Just saying~

I may be in the majority, but I get the Baker King Tak Gu love. It’s sooooooo bad and cliche, yet they do it so well that it’s so good! I’m only on ep 15, so I’m slowly getting to the most recent WITHS2 subs, but don’t want to catch up too fast and be waiting for them! Tak Gu’s mom is a total Kim Ha Neul identical twin.
The other drama I’m addicted to at the moment is I am Legend! I have their version of Genie that was posted on here as my current ringtone.
And for other off drama stuff, I’m looking forward to Grey’s Anatomy this year. I do admit the quality of the show has diminished but after reading a spoiler on E! I am looking forward to this season.
Life post-MBA is more relaxing, but I’m still looking for some direction in life. Enjoying more sleep and K-Dramas until then!

I read some of the comment and it seem S.Scandal is the drama I have to watch.. I currently watching MGIG- Baker king and Giant…
To be honest I don’t get all the high ratings that Baker king getting…don’t get rung it is one of those show hat you feel guilty after watching… there is so many cliché in this drama that I laughed my ass at the first EP and the drama have to many flat character ( the sister’s)… But it got better after the story kept moving..
I love MGIG… Seriously who will not fall in love for these character… Giant has some great acting and story…
I watched the first EP of playful Kiss and I understand that some may have find it a little less playful.. In the 1EP I don’t blame the actor, but the directing..It was off because of all the dam fantasy dream and the long scene in the beginning… Hope two see it improve in the next ep.. Peace all..:)
I’m really enjoying both SSK and PK. I don’t know why it’s these two dramas that have hooked me in, but I love them!
I also like how slow and not angsty PK is. I agreed with others that it is refreshing. I’m a low-key person so it works with me.
On the other hand, I like SSK because I always get a kick out of gender confusion… and anything historical. So this is so much fun!
Maybe I’m just into dramas about schools??
Anyways, these dramas have given me something to look forward to, instead of stressing about SCHOOL.

I can’t believe that I am watching all seven primetime Mon-Tues, Wed-Thur series. This is the first time I am enjoying all seven series. Thank goodness the weekend series are duds, otherwise I’ll be up 24/7 watching all these shows. Kdrama is more addictive than crack.
I am such a Hyun Joong fan girl and loving the way that he’s slowly proving himself to a lot of people who used to diss him.. Thank Goodness for Playful Kiss…
I have enjoyed the past two episodes of PK immensely and i love the fresh perspective that i’m seeing in the Korean version… I am such a fan of this story (ive watched all versions and almost memorized the TW one) that i thought that i would be bored by the Kversion but surprisingly enough, the opposite happened and i am now waiting for episode 5 with the greatest of anticipation…
On another note, has anyone seen the preview of Daemul with Kwon Sang Woo and Ko Hyun Jung? It reminded me somewhat of City Hall’s vibe… it looks promising…
