Playful Kiss: Episode 6

We don’t exactly pick up the same momentum started in the last episode, despite my fervent cheers of, “Come on, Show! You can do iiiiiiiiit!” I just adore Ha-ni’s embarrassingly realistic girl-with-a-bleeding-heart-crush so much that I want more for her. More story, more conflict, more…everything.

In this episode Seung-jo ups his game and starts to show some interesting colors, and everyone goes to the hair salon in preparation for college. Some come out better, while others…do not.

EPISODE 6 RECAP

Ha-ni wakes up in the hospital, with a cast on her leg and a shadow over her mood. Her overwhelming guilt makes her keep everyone at bay, most of all Seung-jo, who doesn’t know why she’s so upset. Duckie and Min-ah come to visit, but she kicks them out, wanting to be alone. Seung-jo stands by her bedside as she cries.

After leaving the hospital, Ha-ni continues to feel so guilty that she can’t face anyone in Seung-jo’s family. She asks Dad if maybe they should move, and he says that they’re more worried about her. She keeps skipping dinner and never coming out of her room, and Mom worries that she isn’t eating.

Seung-jo says he talked to her, making Mom perk up. He says that he thanked her for making it so he couldn’t go to his interview. Mom frowns and takes away his dinner, saying that he can’t eat either. Ha.

Ha-ni decides in a fit of angst to run away from home (where’s she planning to go, the restaurant?) and packs a suitcase with a heavy heart. She sneaks out past the front door, only to find Seung-jo lurking in the yard.

He asks nonchalantly if she’s running away, and when she insists he not stop her, he doesn’t even pretend to try. He offers to carry her bag, in fact, since it looks heavy. He then hands her an envelope from her university, and it’s a full-ride scholarship letter. She reads it, realizing that it’s not for her, but for him.

They’re basically offering him the moon to go to school there, and Ha-ni notes that while it’s such vastly different treatment than what they gave her, he must be getting such offers from every university ever.

He muses that this past year was the most disruptive, crazy year he’s ever experienced, never knowing what to expect and always encountering something new. She starts to say that she’s sorry, but he adds, “…it was fun.” Ha-ni: “So…you’re going because of me?” Seung-jo: “Not because of you. Because of me.” He borrows her own words, saying that until he finds what he wants to do with his life, he plans on having some fun. Aw.

She asks to come back inside, and he carries her bag back upstairs. She asks if he’s known all this time while she was feeling guilty that he was going to the same school as her, and he nods like it’s no big deal. Ha-ni: “Why?” Seung-jo: “Because it’s fun. Why? You don’t like it?” Ha-ni: “No! I do!” Seung-jo: “I know.” Gah. Cheeky!

She does a silent dance of joy by herself to celebrate. How cute are you? She conveys her youthful crush with such embarrassingly true girlish antics—I love her.

Duckie begs for Ha-ni’s dad to teach him his noodle ways, and ends up helping out at the restaurant. Ha-ni picks up a part-time job at a convenience store because she lacks the money to buy Seung-jo a proper present. Shouldn’t you be working at your dad’s?

She tires herself out working late every night, until one day Seung-jo walks into the store. She gasps and hides, not knowing what to do, and by the time he comes up to the register, she greets him looking like this:

Hahaha. He’s startled, especially when she asks him to take his own change, since she can’t see anything with her hood zipped all the way up. Her boss happens to walk in right at that time, so she gets fired immediately.

Luckily, she comes upon a chicken shop with a Help Wanted sign. She starts going on deliveries right away, earning more money than she was before. She heads on one last delivery for the night, and ends up at her own house, delivering chicken to Seung-jo. She doesn’t know what to do, so she greets him one more time, hood zipped up, scaring the beejezus out of him. Hahaha. This gag is hilarious because it’s all visual.

On her way home that night, Ha-ni gets a call from Min-ah, saying that she hasn’t been able to get a hold of their friend Ju-ri for days now. She hasn’t been around much, ever since they both got into the same university, and now she’s MIA. Ha-ni runs all over town searching for her.

She and Min-ah finally find her at school, angsting over what to do with her life. They encourage her to do what she’s really good at and loves, so she decides joyfully to ditch her books and go to beauty school.

Ha-ni finally gives Seung-jo the gift she worked so hard for: a head massager? He rebuffs her as usual, but overhears her telling Mom that she worked part-time jobs to earn the money. He cracks a smile at that, putting the pieces together from that weird night.

It’s graduation day. Already? We sure are moving quickly, Show. The principal announces that both Ha-ni and Seung-jo will be going to Parang University, and Seung-jo takes the stage for his valedictorian address. He gives a nice little speech, ending with Ha-ni’s grandmother’s words, to live a life that’s fun and makes others happy.

Ha-ni then gets called up to join him, to receive their diplomas as representatives for their classes. What kind of a graduation is this? Well, it’s an excuse for them to stand on stage together, and of course Ha-ni fantasizes about it being their wedding ceremony instead. She shouts out, “I swear!” (The Korean version of “I do.”) Duckie objects, Mom objects to Duckie’s objection, and everyone has a good laugh.

To top it off, Seung-jo wants to get off the stage as fast as possible, but on her way down, Ha-ni slips and lands on his back. You should’ve just piggybacked her the first time. Now you owe her double from dodging the first. The universe will always collect on piggybacks owed.

Everyone wants to take pictures with Seung-jo post-graduation, but he pretty much ignores all of them, even leaving Mean Girl’s side mid-shot. Mom wants Ha-ni to go ask him, so she stands near him and looks up expectantly. Aw, I so distinctly remember being nervous to take a picture with a boy I liked. Such a huge deal, for such a little thing.

He scoffs that she has the gall to ask him for a picture after today, so she slumps down and starts to walk away. But he pulls her back and puts his arm around her for a picture. Everyone around them gasps, and while Mom takes the picture, Seung-jo repeats Ha-ni’s words in the convenience store, to take his own change. She looks up at him, horrified, as he smiles devilishly like the bastard that he is. Haha.

The first class and seventh class end up partying at the same restaurant, where Duckie is about to start a serenade for Ha-ni. She stays slumped down in embarrassment, Duckie sings and dances his heart out, and Seung-jo looks on. He laughs at first, looking down on Duckie the way he does, but then when he gets close to Ha-ni during the song, Seung-jo starts to get jealous. Love it.

Ha-ni’s dad gets swamped at the restaurant, so he calls Duckie to come and help. He’s torn because he wants to stay with Ha-ni, but he decides to make the classic second-lead mistake: he decides to help her silently, in the shadows. He goes to the restaurant to play the dutiful son-in-law. Tsk, tsk. You’ll never get the girl that way!

Seung-jo starts to publicly humiliate Ha-ni for disrupting his life and having a crush on him. Okay, that’s just mean. Knowing she likes you is one thing, even if it’s public knowledge, but teasing her for it publicly is awful. He relentlessly points out that she’s written his name all over her books and everyone laughs, at which Ha-ni finally has enough and takes out her secret weapon:

She passes the picture around and Seung-jo freaks out. He snatches it and grabs Ha-ni by the wrist (gah) and drags her outside.

He leans in close, and Ha-ni starts to get scared, so she announces that all she did was get revenge because he took the fact that she likes him and used it to make fun of her in front of everyone. I approve. That deserves bigger retribution than an embarrassing photograph, I say.

She tells him that she’s done harboring her crush, and that with the end of high school comes the end of her feelings for him. She vows to forget him.

Seung-jo: “Forget? You’re going to forget me?”

And with that, he leans in for a kiss. Ha-ni’s eyes widen in surprise, and Seung-jo leaves, turning back to challenge her, “Try to forget me now.” Ack! He adds the equivalent of “neener” at the end, just to make it extra adorable. Gah, how can you be such an ass and so cute at the same time? It hurts my brain.

Ha-ni slides down the wall in utter shock. In disbelief, she thinks to herself, “I. Kissed. Baek Seung-jo.” Her reaction is so great because it’s such a shock wave to her. He may have just kissed her to pull her strings, but it shakes her to her core.

The next morning, she wakes up with a girlish squeal. God, I love that feeling of waking up the morning after something amazing happens. It’s the best feeling in the world.

She wonders what to say, and how to act, thinking about how awkward it’s going to be to see him. He comes out of the bathroom so she’s forced to confront it head-on, but he’s as mean to her as before, like nothing happened. She frowns, confused and hurt that she’s the only one who’s turned upside-down and he’s the same as before.

He dashes off to school without her, and she meets up with Min-ah and Ju-ri on campus for lunch. Everyone’s sporting a new look for college, and they aw at each other’s grown-up changes. Ha-ni blushes at the sight of another couple kissing, and her friends get it out of her that she kissed Seung-jo.

On their way out, Ha-ni almost gets hit by a car. The driver gets out, and it’s our introduction to Yoon He-ra (Lee Shi-young). So far all we know is that she’s an upperclassman, and she’s lookin’ good.

Ha-ni goes to find Seung-jo in his lecture hall, and is forced to do the awkward, “I was just dropping by…” when He-ra appears in the doorway. She asks if Ha-ni is his girlfriend, to which he replies the equivalent of: “As if.”

Ha-ni can’t believe his answer. But…what about…the kiss?

He-ra invites him out for tea, but he declines and leaves. Ha-ni can’t help but smile, and when He-ra sees her reaction, the claws come out. Ruh-roh. It’s the birth of Mean Girl 2.0.

COMMENTS

My hopes were raised by the cohesive story of Episode 5, but they dipped again when we started to race through choosing college, graduation, and the start of university. I feel like the college-application episode was such a welcome neat little narrative box. Now we’re back to the loose vignettes. Sigh.

It looks like Meaner Girl is going to be an interesting character, not least because she’s played by Lee Shi-young, so I’m looking forward to some meaty conflicts there.

We finally got our first kiss, and it was delightfully playful, as promised. Kudos, Seung-jo. You have successfully made our heroine’s heart flutter and die a thousand deaths in one fell swoop. You walk a dangerously fine line between rat bastard and swoon-worthy dreamboat, but I suppose we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Seung Jo is one lovable bad boy in this drama. It's not the look but the inner feeling he has for her, and his own confusing self that make him very attractive and lovable. I tried not to compare with other versions, but i think this one is more realistic especially with the development of feeling between the leads.

I really like it. Can't wait for the next one.

I never read the manga and only saw bits & pieces of ISWAK, so I never understood the comparative comments. I found the "first kiss" in ISWAK and after watching what lead up to it and the post-kiss reaction, I think it's not fair to compare the two dramas.

Even though both are based on the same manga, at least for the first kiss, the two versions have different takes. In PK, SJ is calculating (though a bit of jealousy also promoted the string of events, as JB pointed out), and knew he was going to kiss HN, so there's not a surprise on his part, but more of the "neener" response. In ISWAK, the song was a karaoke instead of a serenade, and was finishing before the 1st class showed up (so no jealousy fuel), and the guy was acting much more out of anger from the photo than any pre-meditation for the kiss, so the post-kiss reaction was largely of surprise, and when he finally collected his wits about him, the quick reaction he came up with is sticking his tongue out at her... ^^;;

thanks gf for the great recap as usual! but im wondering if you still have your foot or your in bandages as of the moment?

this episode solidified my conviction to finish this drama!

we can see now that oh hani have strong influences to seung jo by means of the things that she say or do. like in the grad speech or for choosing parang university. it shows the he values oh hani's opinions.

i love the scenes when the 2 of them are bickering or just having conversations because it seems like seung jo is more open of himself when he's talking to hani. its seems that the cold/stoic personality of seung jo is being thaw by the warm and simple heart of hani. which makes their dynamic more lovable.

a shout out to seung jo's mom for being the coolest mom in the kdramaland! i wish i have that kind of mother in law in the future! LOL!

about the kiss, i think its done just right. its light, sweet and teasing which i feel their first kiss really supposed to be.

the post reaction of both actors are something that im happy about. how the look in seung jo's in his eyes changes after he kissed hani as if he felt something about it. its very brief but note worthy. KHJ, it seems like your learning a thing or two. on the other hand i love how hani's reaction changes from shocked, confused and awed. SJM, really have a wide range of emotions, that why we cant help but love her!

little rantings:
hopefully in the next episodes the editing would be more polish and the time frames are more explained.
and i know you wanted seung jo to have a new look for college but PLEASE!!!! if you gonna give him perm can you tone down it a bit. i'ved seen KHJ in perm but not as much like here in PK.

*sigh now it really seems like wednesday and thursday are so far away!!!

dont really care about the ratings, as for me this drama serves up right for my taste.

PK AJA! FIGTHING!

Agreed with everything you said...thought it was just me alone that caught the brief eye change in BSJ after the kiss. Since they've cut the episodes down, I hope they trim out unnecessary stuff so we can get the wedding and life afterwards, maybe even include a baby. I do hope for better kisses in the future, though I thought this kiss was perfect for the first. Hope the ratings go up. PK FTW!!!!

I really hope there would be another rival for BSJ besides Duckie for OHN's love. I mean, Duckie's all cool in his goofy way and a loveable character, but we need a guy that BSJ would actually consider competition. One that would get him all rilled up and such, and Duckie so far doesn't do that; he just looks down on him. ^-^ Well that's my two cents.

BSJ seemed pretty jealous during the karaoke scene...loved it! Spoiler ahead----> If the show goes into after married life, there is another love rival for Kotoko in the form of a fellow nursing student.

As they say in Japan "K-k-kissu? Kissu?! KISSU?!" or the ever popular "CHUUUUU!!!!" XD The recaps to this show is hilarious, but I did watch the part with her hoody stunt. I've always wanted a hoody like that, ever since Chunderella had it in FO (it was a T-Rex).

The first few episodes did not excite. However, its finally getting more interesting: less "cutesy" and more substance (i.e., a story with potential for conflicts/angst/character development...).

I'm happy to say that KHJ's acting has improved and I'm hopeful that he will continue to improve. There are subtleties in his mannerism that make him likeable and effective. JSM is good as the female lead (even when she overacts) as well as the supporting casts.

Thanks for the recap GF!!

As much as I enjoyed the cohesiveness of ep 5, i'm also fully enjoying the vignettes. I'm just enjoying the show for the fun it is. It takes me back to the days of girlish high school crushes. I could NOT stop laughing at the chicken hoodie parts. I literally replayed those scenes several times to see SJ's shocked reactions haha. And then the part where he leaves the picture with Mean Girl mid-shot. Priceless.

As for the kiss.... it wasn't what I was expecting. I think what I liked about the taiwanese one was the shock that registered on Zhi Shu's face right after he did it and then trying to play it off cool like it was nothing. It seemed more like a reaction to Xiang Qin's declaration of her forgetting him and finding someone new. More unexpected, uncalculating. Seung Jo's kiss seemed more of a challenge and more "planned" even if it was planned seconds in advance. Both show that XQ/HN have gotten to ZS/SJ and have affected him and I think both show that ZS/SJ doesn't want XQ/HN to like someone else. I think Seung Jo's approach had the desired effect on Ha Ni, but lacked the oomph of Zhi Shu's. But that's just my opinion. I know there are bound to be differences and I'm actually glad it's not a carbon copy of the TW one.

Now for the perm. Gahhh... I just can't get behind it. I didn't like it on Joe and I don't like it on KHJ. Maybe it'll grow on me, but it's doubtful. What can I say... I liked his perfect robot-like hair haha.

I think it's funny how Ha Ni laughs at other girls who like BSJ and get rejected by him when they try to make a move

1. the girl in the study hall, who Seung-jo rejects her offer of a soda
2. Mean Girl being rejected for a graduation picture with Seung-jo
3. He-ra inviting Seung-jo out for tea, but he declines and leaves

Even though she knows the pain they must feel cause she herself is not on his good side either or yet

ok the perm is an absolutely failure, really! what were they thinking? and agree with mel-mel. Seung-jo needs competition instead of always looking down on duckie.
competition will get him worried for once and actually care his action.

you've already got a place in seung-jo's heart.

I am really liking this series ... it really is too bad that they cut it by four episodes, but hopefully that will let them tighten the side story lines and let the series concentrate on the relationship between the main two actors.

One reason why I enjoy this series so much is that it is so light-hearted. Sure, our heroine might suffer some serious angst down the road and it will only come from one source, but at least there won't be much mean parents or back-stabbing ex girlfriends or whatever.

I hope that Tennis club guy with the mustache shows up in the next episode. He was really very amusing in the manga and anime.

I tried to watch the Taiwanese version, I really tried. I couldn't get past the second episode because the actors Mandarin/Taiwanese was really whiny and grating on my ears. (I never have that sort of problem with Taiwanese dramas.)

I watched the anime before watching this Korean version. I hope they do the whole thing ... college, marriage during college, the problems adjusting to life after marriage, etc. The original manga author had passed away before she finished the series, so hopefully it will show their attempts at being parents as well as the anime did.

I loved the kiss , I'm not fan of hot scens or kisses in a tv drama , it embarasses me even when I'm watching alone .
what I love more about the kiss is the fact that seung jun did kiss her becoz she told him she decided to forget about him which may made him insecure and thought that he may loose her love and she may be really serious in forgetting him especially with that other guy ( the one who loves her )around ( ok at least I think so ) .
even with that scene of her taking her luggage and leaving the house , and eventhough he didn't stop her verbally he did secretly by showing her the uni acceptance papers becoz he knows she is feeling sorry and wants to leave becoz she regrets being the cause of his troubles .
I luved this 6th epi and I'm enjoying show , just waiting how will he realize his love feelings for her and how will he express them .
I never watched any of the other versions of the show so I'm discovering the storyline with each new epi ( ok I read the animations's updates on manga but it's different , can't find it that much similar ) I'm also eagerly waiting for the reaction of the new meany girl whom I already hate .
there's something I really wish I will watch during the upcoming epsiodes , OH ha ni becoming a bit strong and says enough to seung ju at least during one episode
I know how love can be , but I personnaly don't think I can take any humilation even from the person I love the most .
ahh forgot to mention , I also luved how seung jun becomes jealous whenever that guy who loves oh ha ni shows her how much he loves ( like in the restaurent with that song ) or whenver oh ha ni prizes that 2nd guy for something ( like when she prizes his cooking skills in the 3d or 4th epi ) and eventhough seung jun's reaction , whenever he gets jealous , is very hurting to Oh ha ni it still be cute , I mean the fact that his feelings are changing for the luv of this simple girl
anyway I'm really loving the show so I'm crossing my fingers for a rocking continuation and end .
PS : Oh ha ni was very beautiful as a bride , seung jun will probably fall for her in a second if sees her wearing that way

so ur comments and updates make me get the true feelings and thoughts of the characteres , so thanks once again :)

Hmmm, LSY doesn't look the part...the leads were perfectly casted...it would help if KHJ's character was aloof instead of cruel...actually this drama is quite good...it appeals to a much older crowd than high schoolers, so that could be why it hasn't raised much in ratings...but hey, You're Beautiful was underrated, but it's popularity now is amazing. There is hope...in the other versions, the male leads were much better portrayed than the female leads, however, in this they really are equal. Give KHJ the chance and watch him succeed.

I'm conflicted over Seung Jo. Like most people have mentioned, he's a total bastard but so cute. What can a girl do? I really hope that they bring a cute guy in who's interested in Hani just because I pity her and to also make Seung Jo jealous. We need something to throw him off so that he can come back down to earth.

How about Hani ignore him for a period of time to see how he'd react? Would he bother or come chasing after her for attention again?

lol.... dunno what they will do in this version. the problem in the other versions is that he didnt come chasing cuz he knew she was making him jealous everytime she showed interest in another boy. he's super confident she likes him. -_-''

RE: the kiss - i think how it was carried out, how they made it look calculated and just a tiny, tiny bit insignificant on SJ's part suits the story. Considering how the pace has really picked up since episode 5, I don't want them also rushing into uncovering Seung Jo's feelings for Hani TO SEUNG JO, because then, what else is there left to latch on to? Also, the little variations from its counterparts are good for me personally, because they took out the predictability from a story I've known by heart from beginning to end. SJ being still dominantly in control of his emotions and actions makes me anticipate the moment he finally recognizes and understands why he's reacting the way he does where ever Hani is concerned.

Besides, a kiss + a revelation at only Episode 6 is not playful, it's rushed. They might as well have sex in 6 minutes.

the kiss part was amazing! "try to forget me now..", ~that's just... aaaaahhh.. ~lolz

but i agree, i was quite disappointed with the episode as a whole :( as much as i love this drama, i thought it lacked a lot of 'depth' or 'character' [or whatever..] 'just when i thought things are starting to pick up since ep. 5

oh well.. i hope things get better in ep. 7 :D it would take more than a few disappointments for me to give up on this drama ~hehehe..

thanks for sharing this recap! ♥♥~

my fav scenes from this episode: the kiss, the jealous look on his face during Joon Gu's performance, and her wake up scene in the morning.....oh and the funny scenes of her hooded up. Dear show, you are making my weekends livelier. and making me laugh a lot! hahaha....

I enjoy this show - I always wanted a Korean version to come out, but in all honestly, the Tiawanese version was so much better =/

I find myself going back to Tdrama - It Started With A Kiss 1 & 2 - just to get back the high from watching the drama.

I love this show though! But Ariel and Joe in ISWAK did it so much better xD... And in this korean version some of the things seem rushed for real - not ISWAK though =]

I know what you were saying about the hair salon LOL
it looks like he had a nest drooped on him. Why he had to change the cool haicut he had earlier (and to such rediculuos one)? Don't get it at all..

But Ha ni friends look good, especially the one that had glasses before :)

i guess i'll just read the recaps and fast forwarding here and there. i love khj in variety, he has that lovable personality, but i couldn't stand the way he acts. sorry. :( meanwhile, oh ha ni's character and actress is soooo lovable <3 i haven't watch the taiwan version, but i hate the female lead character in jdorama's version.
