Ratings creep upward for Sungkyunkwan Scandal
by | September 7, 2010 | 112 Comments

Well, with extensions confirmed for both Giant and Dong Yi, I think the best Sungkyunkwan Scandal can hope for is a strong third place showing in the Monday-Tuesday ratings race. And while the gains made this week are fairly small, at least they are encouraging: Week 2 brought in a 7.3% and 7.5%, up from last week’s twin 6.3% ratings.

By comparison, Dong Yi drew a 25.3% for its Tuesday episode, with Giant closing in on the gap with a 24.2%. Both dramas will be ending with 60 episodes, after being granted a 10-episode extension each.

But more than the uptick in the numbers, I’m finding Sungkyunkwan‘s story to be as refreshing and entertaining as I thought it last week. The series weaves bigger social, cultural, and political issues into what could be a frivolous trendy-drama story, adding some interesting depth to the plot. It doesn’t hurt that Yoo Ah-in takes a bigger role this week — he’d been the least featured last week but the most charismatic (in my opinion) of the four; the first two episodes focused more on series leads Park Min-young and Park Yoo-chun (aka Micky Yoochun), as well as the exceedingly engaging Song Joong-ki.

yay! hopefully, by some miracle, the ratings will increase to 10% because this drama deserves it. it is so refreshing and interesting. episode 3 was hilarious

    • 1.1 soiia

I completely agree with you; This drama is indeed really refreshing and great to watch because it isn’t just an eye-candy drama and actually have depth, plot wise. Ep. 3 and 4 got me giggling and sooo excited for next week!

      • 1.1.1 :D

lol i was cracking up when the boys nicknamed her “huge penis”

    • 1.2 Mythili

agree with u…the series is so refreshing and the characters are interesting…the male lead slightly falling for the bad guy’s sister is hilarious to me

    • 1.3 sansukini

I just finished watching ep 3 and 4. I must say, it’s really getting better and better. I wanna rush the time so I can watch the next episodes already. It’s so addictive, seriously. Ep 3 cracked me up (dae-mul),. and ep 4 is the best episode for me (so exciting and with a lot of sweet and funny moments)… so far. I hope they get better ratings next week. I love Sungkyungkwan Scandal. it’s got a mixture of everything for me. Comedy, drama, action, romance, everything with a very solid plot that’s so compelling to the viewers.

  2. fai

The story is fun and refreshing.. eventhough i dont think they will manage to beat DY and GIANT, they will still have a solid viewer base.. so double digit may be possible.

  3. kit

don’t want to sound like a fangirl …
    but i kind of am
damn you sjk wai are you so adorbs
but on a deeper, uh non squealing level, this drama has really caught my interest. i’ve always loved historical dramas, and this has a great mix between keeping the humour for a younger audience as well as hinting to darker complexities of the corruptible dynasty. i was ridiculously excited for dong-yi, but i kind of gave up on that because it became so longwinded (also a lack of bsb >_>) so this might have to take its place haha. and of course, as the recaps pointed out, the setting and costumes etc are all gorgeous. (:

  4. anon

funnily enough this is the only drama airing right now where i cant wait for the ep to be subbed and go ahead and watch the raw even though i dont understand half of it, doesnt even happen for MGIAG
    its brilliant!

    • 4.1 krix

Me too! I thought I was the only one….

I have seen each episode (1-4) at least 2 times (raw and subbed) and enjoy every moment. Although, I understand very little Korean.

I wished they aired this on cable in America, or at least Hulu.

The scenery and costumes are beautifully done and the story pulls you in, so that you can’t wait (at least I can’t) until the next episode.

The cast (main and supporting) is very well put together.
      I’m definitely hooked!

      • 4.1.1 yu

go to hulu, they are airing now or dramafever.

    • 4.2 Mythili

      count me also in!!

    • 4.3 roughmetal2

me too. haven’t watched any drama without subs except for this one and although i couldn’t understand a word said, i was laughing like mad at some of the scenes.

    • 4.4 roughmetal2

same here. i haven’t watched any asian drama without subs except for this one. and funny that although i couldn’t understand a word said while watching the raw i was still laughing like crazy at some of the scenes.

    • 4.5 roughmetal2

me too. i haven’t watched any asian drama without subs except for this one. and funny that although i couldn’t understand a word said while watching the raw i was still laughing like crazy at some of the scenes.

    • 4.6 sansukini

Same here. I watched the raws first while I wait for the subs and I watched the subs later 2x. It never gets old.

      • 4.6.1 skksfanatic

i watched raw, and times over for subbed :) ) gosh, i won’t forget this drama as i have done with you’re beautiful and other dramas i didn’t finish but just read JV’s recaps :) )

  5. Addicted

hope the recaps for this drama will come soon!! :]

  6. Marg

This drama totally took me by surprise. When I first heard about it at the beginning of the summer, I had no real intention of watching it. Then, on a whim and because I was bored, I decided to give the first episode a try. Now, I’m completely hooked, and I can’t wait for the next episode.

    • 6.1 sansukini

to be honest, I only started watching this because of yoochun. the plot didn’t really interest me that much cuz I’ve seen enough girl pretending to be boy drama with hana kimi and YAB, amongst other similar plots. But I was surprised that I really loved it when i watched the first episode. I’ve watched the first 2 episodes like 3 times now and i never tire of the story. It’s not just the cute boys but the general flow of the story itself that I find compelling.

I really think they Sungkyungkwan Scandal deserves a better rating than what they’re getting now.

  7. Jenju

Yay! I’m very glad this is happening for this drama because I’m really really enjoying the flip of the female lead being a cynical skeptic and the male lead being the honorable idealist.

I love it :) SS Fighting!

  8. rhea

I am actually rooting for this pairing: Yoo Ah In and Park Min Young. They have the best chemistry, even in the press conference pics.

But I’ll take Yoo Ah In anytime, haha.

    Thanks.

  9. hjkomo

Yoo! Ah! In! Sexy bastard. :D

I love this time period and the politics surrounding King Jeongjo’s reign. Gah…need to go watch episode 4….

  10. 10 Anna

I’m a DBSK fangirl and speaking from non bias side, I find this drama entertaining to watch too. I have tried out Playful Kiss, though that drama is decent but SKK Scandal draws me in more.

Hopefully the rating will continue to go up.

    • 10.1 skksfanatic

i hope there is a like option here so i can like your comments :D

  11. 11 amc510

i started reading the recaps before i watched it. fell madly in-love. much like hanakimi. loved both versions-japanese and taiwanese. been checking for recaps.
want you to know i love your recaps. started to read them with yab. saw references in the comments. thank you so much for all your hard work!

  12. 12 kay

i just love this drama! song joong ki and yoo ah in makes me squeal like a crazy fan girl every time they come on screen. and does yoo ah in have the cutest nose or what? ahh i just wish he didn’t have to put on that school uniform. he looks so hot as a crazy horse

  13. 13 bk

Episode 4 was SOOOOOO good. Yoo Chun is getting better and better.

SKKS is a high quality drama, it deserves better ratings it’s just having a really tough competition because both DY and Giant are at it’s peak already.

Let’s just hope that it can still achieve double-digit ratings despite all of it.

  14. 14 Nhu

You mean the exceedingly engaging face of Soon Joong-ki. I know the boy has acting chops, but every time they cut to his face I squeal a little inside. It doesn’t help the fangirlism when his character is also a hedonistic playboy – perfect for his face.

    • 14.1 :P

ditto, i LUV him and the rest of drama: costumes, sets, characters, actors, ETC cept i need recaps to understand political happenings cuz it is intriguing but i cant rly understand it

      • 14.1.1 Annie

I don’t get the political thing that happen in the drama too

  15. 15 huong

i hope the film’s rating will increase up 2 digit, because it is really wonderful!

  16. 16 Sushi

I really want the ratings to go up for this drama because it is really really really really good!!! i love song joong ki in this drama :) and i’m finding the other leads endearing as well

  17. 17 Anonymous

I’m just glad that the ratings are increasing instead of decreasing. At least people are giving this drama a chance. Sungkyunkwan Scandal is very engaging and definitely different from what I expected. I just can’t help but look forward to more episodes.

  18. 18 Noypi

Can someone give me reason(s) to start watching this drama!!! I need some pushing.. =)

    • 18.1 djinni

uh.. yoo ah in.. he always pushes me.. right over the edge.

      • 18.1.1 Noypi

Ohhhh.. He’s the guy from Antique Bakery?? i Loved that movie.. I’m not familiar with any of the actors in this drama, but people are loving it so i want to give it a try..

      • 18.1.2 anonymous

        Word!

    • 18.2 orenji13

      I’ll try:
      1. cross dressing female
      2. beautiful lead man (all three of them)
      3. beautiful antagonist man
      4. cool teacher
      5. dark politic

      etc

it is, in all aspect an idol drama. But it also, in all aspect a serious period drama.

      • 18.2.1 ck1Oz

Good plot to far and good to decent acting.Great cast chemistry. Funny.Eye candies+ beasts :-)

    • 18.3 kiwi

everything you love is in this drama, hot guys, interesting plot, beautiful scenery, good directions, etc

    • 18.4 sansukini

Elow. I’m guessing you’re pinoy, right?

Seriously, this is the best lighthearted rom-com-perios piece drama I’ve ever watched so far.

Even the first episode is fast-paced, you can already see where the story is going, it has a very solid plot. The story is somewhat like Hana-Kimi, although unlike HK, our heroine has a very good reason of attending Sungkyungkwan university. She needs to support her family and her sick brother, and the allowance from the school will help her accomplish that both. Plus, she’s forced to enter the entrance examinations for the scholars by Yoochun’s character (she was posing as her brother to earn money by helping students with their schoolworks and posing as a substitute exam-taker, where she was found out by Yoochun’s character and saw that she’s smart so he tricked her into taking the exam herself under his brother’s name), Plus, the King personally chose her to attend the University and reside there as some sort of punishment for posing as an exam-taker for someone else. ANd if she doesn’t go, she’ll be forced to submit to an old high-ranking geezer and marry him.

It contains very little political drama, but this provided some action sequences (Iljimae-like) to be incorporated into the story.

You’ll love the characters. they all have their own identity but it all fits well into the story. Yoochun’s an upright, proud nobleman with a great sense of justice that evryone presumes as conceit, except
for yon-shik/Yon Hee (our heroine) who’s always defensing his actions, although she admits that she hates his gut.

If you’re a female, you’ll positively swoon from Song Joongki’s smile and personality. He’s the playful and naughty one, always playing tricks on yonHee (he knows she’s a girl), but he’s basically nice and he gets along with evryone. And Yoo Ah’s the tough and rebellious one. Everyone is school calls him a wild horse and are afraid of him.

IU’mnot a good writer so what I wrote might not be that good. But Simply put. It’s the best drama for me.

  19. 19 ilukd

i just love SS … story is so engaging .. love all the 4 hot and pretty men … the leading actress is so good at acting .. perfect to the T …

    • 19.1 skksfanatic

yeah i super love park min young’s acting. she’s not the type of awkward-looking cross-dressing girl :D D naturally portrayed kim yoon shik’s character :D

  20. 20 Penn

This drama is the best thing about Mondays. I hope their ratings keep rising.

  21. 21 Sam

yoo ah in & song joong ki <3
    episode 4 was intense.

  22. 22 orenji13

I just realize the heavy competition that occur on Mon-Tues. It filled with high quality drama…

Seeing the list, I am just happy that SKKS maintain it’s viewership. The other three are filled with big star name that a newbie like SKKS are just lucky to have their piece of audience.

(no matter how good it is, sometimes luck play important role on rating. And also big name actor that guarantee the story-although this not always happen)

    • 22.1 orenji13

and forget to say that all 4 drama are different from each other…

      Tough competition we have here…

  23. 23 norimaki

SS makes me wish that all the days of the week should be just Mondays and Tuesdays , kekeke !

  24. 24 NishiAngel

Wasn’t exactly looking forward to watching this drama but I just did for the heck of it….and surprisingly, I liked it. So will be looking forward to it every week. ^^

  25. 25 eclipse

Now, when it`s Mon-Tue, i get confused everytime, because i really wanna watch Dong Yi and Sungkyunkwan Scandal live! Both! (I`m greedy..). But because my internet sucks so i have to choose, and it`s getting hard.So i leave it up to my net streaming ability, which one that have a better link.. :P

And boy, I`m glaaad.. that Yoo Ah In`s story is more interesting and has depth. I`ve been wanting to see his angst after Heuk San (Strongest Chil Woo).

  26. 26 rose

im really a fan of gender bender drama and this one is no exception and loving the refreshing actors and a little drama twist and im hooked , there so munch fun watching this a lot of drama i love right now and this one is really interesting and really funny and engaging

  27. 27 nabi

I love this show! :) This is the only drama I’m currently watching.

  28. 28 dit

At the moment, more than Gumiho or Playful, I find Sungkunkwan to be the most interesting of the 3. I like that the drama takes on bigger issues, like morals, political beliefs, etc, despite touting itself as the Joseon F4 drama.

    • 28.1 christine

and I thought I was the only one who found S. Scandal more interesting than Gumiho…..

    • 28.2 Dara

      Me too.

  29. 29 Jae In

The only drama I watch on Monday-Tuesday timeslot. @anon and kris I also done watch video raw via internet (Without Subs) and then tommorow evening watch video with english subs. After all this is the most favourite drama that I kept waiting before it air. GO FIGHTING Sungkyunkwan Scandal.

  30. 30 yansi

Wouldn’t I Am Legend be third place in terms of rating?

Anyways, I’m LOVING SS a lot. I’m actually really surprised…not a fan of Mickey, didn’t really know anyone else in the drama other than Song Joongki (from his brief appearance in Will it Snow for Christmas), but boy am I glad that I gave this drama a chance! I love how it mixes trendiness and dark political into one…love love love love! and all 4 males in the drama are good looking (jun taesoo is such a hot antagonist!)

    • 30.1 bk

I am legend airs earlier than DY, Giant or SKKS(9:55pm).

  31. 31 kdlover

I started watching this out of curiosity and found myself in love with this drama. Great interesting character and story development so far…hope it continue to get even better!!

  32. 32 interesting

hey, actually me too, didnt like the main lead war an another actor wanna be idol.
but actually it was such a good show!
    its plot has own depth.
and the main girl is surprisingly smart.
fed up those s***pid, helpless poor candy girls …
    hehe

    • 32.1 interesting

oops i mean was , not war, sorry

  33. 33 what is

I’m sure someone somewhere must’ve mentioned this before… but I sure hope this doesn’t end tragically (as in the plot of sungkyunkwan scandal) like the Butterfly lovers chinese story. I would be sad :(

    • 33.1 skksfanatic

yeah i thought of that too. i wish it would be left hanging like iljimae :(

  34. 34 Annie

yay for the increase. hope for bigger increase later. I am such a girl fan right now, guys are so hot

  35. 35 ilukd

damn … i cannot wait next week ..

    • 35.1 huong

      me. too

  36. 36 Lemon

I love this drama too! i just wish there was more of the 4 main characters interacting and a little less political intrigue and the other guy constantly glaring at them.

The most charismatic, in my opinion, is Song Joong Ki! He’s perfect as the flower playboy :)

  37. 37 byj_angel

I’m rooting for Yoo Ah In’s acting. I love the character itself and he portrayed it so well. You nailed it,dude! You rock! And boy, isn’t he gorgeous, too?

    • 37.1 eclipse

      He does!!! :D

    • 37.2 eclipse

      He is!!! :D

  38. 38 ohyehbb

I am loving Yoo Ah-In more and more as I watch this drama. Song Joong-Ki, too!

  39. 39 wonnii

gah! can’t take it! i really want to watch but i have exam study T-T
but i agree, it’s so sexy for what sounded like a fluffy teen drama. I wasn’t going to watch something so silly but the first episode just reeled me in
    climb little ratings, climb!

  40. 40 colorado

I love Yong Ha and Jae Shin in this drama(more Yong Ha)!That’s why at the beginning of episode 4 I melted so much! Both, Yong Ha and Jae Shin were so hot.I think they are buddies.
By the way, I noticed ninja eyes in episode 3. Jae Shin is the ninja. He wants to take revenge on his father or something.I read that he’ll love Yoon Hee as a sister.

  41. 41 jijo

    waiting dramabeans recap :)
I watched ep 1-4 two times.

    • 42.1 jac

      yeah:(
we NEED recaps for this series
i’m refreshing here nearly every couple hours hoping for a recap to pop up:(

  43. 43 y.

    rooting for SKK :D

  44. 44 polycolor

Bahaha, just like Hana Kimi, Sungkyunkwan even has the whole doctor plot. Except he’s not gay. Bummer.

    • 44.1 hapacalgirl

To be honest I didn’t think of this drama to be similar to anything other than the whole cross dressing thing until this week. This week i kept getting a somewhat hana kimi vibe especially at the end of episode 4 (if you seen the whole episode you will know what i am refering to). I agree with you I think the professor will be to Yoon Hee what the doctor was to the main character in HanaKimi (whose name I cannot remember at the moment) minus the gay. If they follow the hana kimi vibe then sunjoon is going to find out yoon hee’s gender much sooner rather than later.

on a side note: how cute is Yoo Ah In and Park Min Young in that picture. If i wasn’t already sure who the main couple was I would so root for these two.

  45. 45 1611a

After watching episode 4 and seeing the preview for episode 5, I can officially say that I am in love with this drama :)

  46. 46 lush

    ‘exceedingly engaging Song Joong-ki’
that’s exactly what he is, hahaha

  47. 47 sorcente

    horraay!!!! i am really happy.

i (like most of people ) had 0 intension to watch this series because I didn’t like the stills and posters etc.. and actually i didn’t know who was micky… and the story itself was boring while reading it. .
however after finishing all my dramas last week i had nothing to watch.. i already watched my fave drama coffee prince like 5-6 times :D and i listened to a song on the sungkyunkwan recap page!!!(the one by hot potato!) and i decided to watch it and was REALLY ÜBER surprised.1!!!! really refreshing series!

  48. 48 Anon

Currently my favourite drama of the season.

  49. 49 MUSE

If any drama deserves greater recognition this would be it. Have to say that out of all the romantic comedy dramas around it is the one that I love, squeal over and can’t wait to see uploaded.
Love the character dynamics, love the poetry, love the music, and also adore the use of proverbs and ancient teachings.

    • 49.1 :D

      my thoughts exactly!

    • 49.2 anonymous

      Love the Beautiful Calligraphy!!!

  50. 50 lilly

Lookwise Yoo Ah In looks the best in the show especially when he smiles, followed by Song Jong Ki and Ha Ji Won’s brother.
Characterwise Yoo Ah In (his scenes are funny, intriguing and there are a lot of actions) and Song Jong Ki are equally the best followed by Yoo Chun, Ha Ji Won’s brother and the older male characters.
Actingwise, after the older male actors I like Song Jong Ki and Yoo Ah In equally, followed by Park Min Young and Ha Ji Won’s brother and at last Micky.
