I'm at a loss at KDrama lately. Seems to me that I've been hit bad from the 'second lead shiping' disease. It's been like 4 dramas already... argh! I need to see a happy second lead ending before my mind implodes and I swear off Kdrama for good.

I know!!!! See this is always the problem with 2nd leads..they always do things for the girl and know things but dont tell the girl whereas the first lead is always doing the heroic macho things right there infront of the girl!! If only he had told her from the very beginning he knew she was a lady, then she would have been very self conscious about the fact that shes a girl and hes a guy..and they would have fallen in love! I m sure of it!

Usually, in Kdramas, I feel really bad for the second lead but in the end, I don't want him to get the girl because I want the lead couples to be together.
But with SKKS, I REALLY want Moon Jae Shin to have a happy ending because he's so damn nice and he has more chemistry with the lead actress! From the episodes I've seen so far (i think like 8) I feel the plot hasn't given us good reasons for why Kim Yoon Hee and Lee Sun Joon are falling for each other. Or at least to explain why she is falling for Sun Joon and not Jae Shin because both of them have done nice things for her!
On a completely different note, my two most favorite characters in this drama are Moon Jae Shin and Song Joong Ki's Goo Yong Ha. SJK is such an adorable jerk! I think he's doing an excellent job. And I'm a sucker for whimsical (i think that's the adjective) characters like him.

happy friday all .... wow weekend ...after that ....monday i.e SKK last week ... wow ...already last episode.... i love this drama so much .... it is as entertaining as ep 1 to till now .... this is may be one of the best Korean drama for me ... love the story, cast, direction ..everything about SKK makes me happy ... thanks god for SKK. i bought it a while ago, and started watching it.. then got busy and didn't finish it.. what i did watch, was REALLY REALLY good.
but it's too soon for me to pick it up.. i still miss Park Yong Ha too much that I can't bring myself to watch him on screen again yet. :( it still feels like yesterday to me.. i just can't get over him not being here..

Because of SKK got distracted into reading the original novels - both "SKK Days" and "KyuJangGak Days". I read an interview with the author and she has no plans for publishing more sequels, although she says she's been writing bits and pieces of the Josun F4's adventures in China and their return to Josun just for her own amusement.

seriously looking forward to mary and secret garden, and i want to watch SKK after it finishes, too, although i've been on a major drama slump recently so idk how that'll work out.
i've been watching community! nearing midway of s1 and it's brilliant, joyful and breezy and clever and funny and super. lol, after 22min eps, idk how i'll handle asian drama eps. unforgiving of lag and drag!

i miss SKKS so much. i'm still waiting on subtitles for this week's ep but i have watched the raws.
feel so weird because there is nothing that makes me REALLY REALLY want to watch. i checked out dramamia's blog on Baker King and it does sounds nice but i am still undecided if i will watch it.
maybe i feel quite tired scrounging around for raws and subtitles to watch kdrama...

First few episodes (1-4) of Baker Kim Tak Gu made me bored honestly but as the story goes on, I found myself liking the story and the characters. If you're willing and able for a 30 episode drama, you can give it shot! :D

I agree that the first few episodes are not particularly new or surprising. But I think the story is developing rapidly (despite all the cliches), and the pace is good. The writer/PD also pays a lot of attention to details. So I'm looking forward to seeing how the rest of the show will turn out especially since most of the people who watched it loved it.

I haven't heard any bloggers really mention Baker King (besides posting articles on its huge ratings) but I personally thought it was great. I would say give it a shot! It had me hooked for sure through all 30 episodes and I totally developed a crush on Tak Gu though his sugary sweetness and willingness to forgive was a little hard to believe at times.

As I have DirectTV, I only just watched the last episode of "Gumiho" last night. Unbelievably, a whole segment, from when they were shooting off fireworks, until the movie came out, was cut from it! The whole part where MiHo disappears was gone. What a stupid thing to do! Without your recaps, I would have had no idea what happened. Well, anyway, I'm going to buy the whole series when it comes out-already have the OST.

oh my goodness the video is funny.... ha ha ha but she is unbelievable.. i wish i can do that.. when i came to fan signing like this way back when i was a lot younger, all i can do was stare and then the next thing i knew i was actually pushed to the sides because my turn was up....

I'm so with you on Soulmate.. I've been listening to the OST for the past several days and it's making me want to watch it again. That show touched me more than usual, as all my roommates/dormmates from the year I watched it can attest to -- I cried off and on for hours after I finished it. <3
The previews for Secret Garden make it look like it could be loads of fun, so I'm starting to let myself get excited. :D

I know, Soulmate was a really great drama and the OST was excellent. I downloaded it courtesy of Dramabeans and a lot of the songs are in heavy rotation on my ipod. Definitely love "Come on Through" and Fiona Apple's "Across the Universe."

Happy Friday all....
I didn't get much sleep last night because I was doing a marathon on Hana Yori Dango...and gosh, why I didn't watch this before? I saw BOF first...and Hana was refreshing to watch. I shouldn't started it at night because i was engrossed on it and didn't realized how late was it already.
Anyways, trick or treatin this weekend. I don't really like it because I end up eating lots of candies. BUT, 1 more month and it will be December. I just love the holidays but not the cold....

HYD is LOVE. I watched it first (after reading most of the manga) and I couldn't even get through half of BOF - it made want to poke my eyes out. And I tried more than once (trying to figure out what everyone liked so much about - still scratching my head).

Oh I remember Hana Yori Dango... after all do you ever forget your first? It was the first Asian Drama ever watched.
It was during the summer so the computer lab would close early and then I only had dialup at home, so no video. Oh god the unbearable anticipation of waiting for the next day, the butterflies in the stomach.... it was EXACTLY like first love! I remember once, I had to leave off watching just when Makino discovers Domioji in bed with the other girl.... that was just sheer torture. I was so desperate to know what happened next! :)

Happy Friday everyone! And Happy Halloween weekend.
Deciding to skip the festivities/parties this weekend. Too pooped to drive up to LA and make an effort on a costume and what not. Keeping it low key in the OC :D 2 of my girlfriends are dressing up as 2 of our guy friends... i'm sad that i'll miss seeing that haha. i wonder who's going to be carrying the Magic cards... (yes my friends are nerds lol!!). One of my guy friends is dressing up as the Taiwan Susan Boyle kid. They are so creative... i am so lazy :)

I'm so unmotivated because this week has been stressful for me. dealing with people. I had to swallow my pride and emailed 3 apology emails today. urghh. There were some disagreements so I just want to cool things down with some people.
Halloween.. hmm not sure if I will do anything. I dressed up as a race car girl last year. This year, I want to dress up but don't actually want to party or go clubbing, strange.
I enjoyed playful kiss but fugitive/plan b was a let down.
I'm trying to figure out why i've been so lazy or passive lately, it's just not me. Maybe I'm not going in the right direction in my life. I don't know. All Iknow is that I'm a confused person.

I agree with Viola...try SKKS...it will make you feel good and the probably the plot will give you some perspective in life...like how the heroine struggles in a society and how she is giving her all just to live life.
For Halloween, Guh Ro will do a trunk or treat.....first one to climb Guh ro's tree in a matter of seconds, dress up, heels or none, will get a white chocolate raspberry bar and a KISS....isn't this worth dressing up? lol

OMG - I managed to get Take That tickets today - I was on the net and telephone since 9.00am and did not secure tickets till just after 1.00pm, absolute chaos! Glad I took the day of work lol.
As for dramas, Sunky is my favourite and Gloria still has my interest - loving the relationship development. Even though I'm a little disappointed that SKKS isn't extending, I'm excited for MSOAN!!
I keep hearing about Community - I'm going to catch an episode today!
For Halloween - I'm going to scare kids when they knock on my door, I should clarify that this will be an attempt to scare cause these kids/teens are hardcore!

Last weekday of our 1 week semestral break! I really rewarded myself this week catching up to everything that I missed after a tiring and draining exam week which includes 2D1N, WGM, and SKKS! Speaking of SKKS, like how everyone feels, I'm really gonna miss this show. I love that he's so ambiguously adorable - he's not the 'typical' male, he's got sort of feminine features, but he's still a GUY, if that makes any sense. I was sitting at the kitchen table working on crossword puzzles with my mom this morning, when I felt something on my foot. I glanced down and totally freaked out because there was a caterpillar on my leg (I'm not afraid of bugs except when they're touching me *shudder*), so I shrieked and brushed it off, while my mom just stared at me like I was nuts. Then she killed it like the Amazon warrior she is haha. The caterpillar managed to bite me before I brushed it off, though, so now there's a red mark and a slight stinging pain where it was. ㅠㅠ I hate bugs..
On the subject of my mom, she had a hysterectomy a couple of weeks ago, but she's recovering well and plans to go back to work part-time starting next week. She's technically not supposed to go back until November sometime, but she's a university librarian and they always have trouble staffing the reference desk, so she's just going in during the shifts they have trouble covering. I've gotten so used to her being here with me all day that I'm a little sad. :(
I've also been rearranging my room and putting things out in the hallway to be donated to Goodwill.. After getting rid of the extra desk my parents put in here while I was away at college, I finally have room for my big round chair, which my cat is delighted about. Luckily I had the presence of mind to cover it with a sheet, because it's already covered by her fur.
Ever since I graduated in May, I've been periodically applying for jobs at various companies in my area. I haven't received any offers yet, which is a little annoying. My father blames me for not having a job yet, saying that there's no way that I should still be unemployed, but he doesn't seem to understand that I'm now overqualified for all the jobs I've been applying to. (I don't want a permanent job, because my hope/plan is to go to Korea early next year. A seasonal/part-time job to last me until then is all I want.) But whatever, Mom understands.

The operation and stuff wasn't too bad, and there weren't any complications, so I don't mind. But apart from my four-month stint volunteering at a nearby hospital a couple of years ago, I don't have any experience with hospitals, so visiting her there was a little weird and overwhelming. It's been nice having her home though, because we spend a lot of time chatting and playing board games and stuff that we haven't done since I was much younger. :)
I hope your mom's doing okay! What happened to her that she had to go to the hospital?

It was freakish actually. She was taking her medication regularly and her sugar, cholesterol were all good, but suddenly her blood pressure got so high that they couldn't even measure it with their regular machine. The doctor told her that it's a very good thing that she came to the hospital when she did, otherwise she might have fallen into a coma. :(

Aw, I was there after undergrad. I spent 8 months in vain before deciding to volunteer and do a lot of odd jobs. It helped, since I completely changed my career field and I love it. The job market isn't so hot right now, I guess depending on where you are and the field you're applying to. Maybe you've already tried it, but if you're looking for something temporary...how about trying a contract agency? They make things pretty easy if you're looking for something seasonal, or something to fill in some time.

As for jobs: if you live in a good area can I suggest substitute teaching? I've been trying it out while I sort some stuff out and I love it! If you live in the middle of the ghetto, don't do it. Nothing pays that well.

Yeah, she got it because it was just easier to have the operation than to continue to deal with problems as they came up. Half of her coworkers have had hysterectomies as well, though, so she has a lot of sympathy from them. :)
Ew, teaching. *shudder* That's something I've never wanted to do. I think I'd suck at it, honestly, and it doesn't help that most kids in our school system these days are entitled and spoiled and don't listen to their teachers. I'm shy and quiet under normal circumstances, so I don't think I'd be able to survive. Thanks for the suggestion, though. ^^

I used to be shy. Then one of my professors asked me to teach in the worst school in Memphis. I stopped being shy.
Teaching isn't for everyone, but it is a totally temporary position. After I got my Bachelors, I had to work in Victoria's Secret and Home Depot until I found something more permanent.
The job market sucks unless you're willing to accept a step-job. I hope you find something more fun than what I had to do!

I'm totally okay with Vicky's and HD.. I'm not looking for a permanent position anyway. It's just that it's hard to find anything even part-time or temporary around here. :/ (Except Kohl's, but I've worked at this particular store before and thought it was hell, so I put my foot down at applying there.)

Kender, I'm glad your mom is recovering. And I'm glad you have at least one parent who understands your job situation. It's really hard with parents and older people when discussing the job search because the job search was done differently and in a different environment when they were in their 20s.
And Viola, I hope nothing scary like that ever happens to your mom again (they couldn't even measure it with a machine?!!)

Dear kender I hope your get well soon. It is sad to see Mom sick, even if it is just a flu.
I've been kinda avoiding permanent job too with the same reason as you: "You know, perhaps I may go to Korea any time soon, so....". My parents when hearing about this always give the "what's the hell are you doing?!?" face and their eyes a little, just little like want to pop out. I understand them, I can't go to Korea if I can get a job with good salary, permanent or non permanent. But I save that dream in my pocket so perhaps it may come true. Now, I have non permanent job with if it's not good, it's ok salary. I think I can go to Korea, not any time soon, but someday I'm sure I will. So hope you get your ideal job soon... :)

Happy Friday Everyone! Hopefully your morning was a lot better than mine. I guess every once in a while something happens to remind you that our time here with loved ones is limited :(. Living on the other side of the world doesn't help matters either.
Sad news aside, I've finally caught up to all my dramas! Courtesy of staying home all week. But Monday is right around the corner, so I'm going to enjoy my last week of doing nothing.
Anyone else feel strangely-grossed-out-yet-can't-stop-watching about Sister Wives? I didn't watch them as they aired so I've sort of being watching bits and pieces. I don't even know where to begin, with the whole multiple wife thing. Maybe I should find a society where polyandry is acceptable. I know just which hotties I want to be married too.

I feel your pain about the whole job thing...my sister graduated in May as well and has been applying for jobs, but since she's going to be leaving the country next year she hasn't been able to apply for anything that has a one year + contract. And like you, she's overqualified for a lot of what she's applying for. I mean finding jobs right now in general is really difficult. But maybe you'll be to find something around the holidays? Good luck though! Sending good vibes your way :)
I haven't been keeping up with SKKS (I know that's a little blasphemous). And even though I love the character of Moon Jaeshin...I've been distracted by Joseon X-Files, which btw is excellent. That and 三国 (San Guo) which I'm slowly watching since I can only understand about half of it w/o subtitles. But it's still fun to watch.
I know a lot of people are super-excited about MSOAN, but I'm more excited about Secret Garden (HJW! and HB!) but I'm so meh on the writer (I only liked City Hall out of everything she's done and IMHO think the drama really succeeded b/c KSA and CSW are talented actors and had off the charts chemistry).

Haha, thanks. :) There are also a lot of recently-retired people and high school students in our area, so I'm also being shoved out by them. Plus, I think the fact that I have a college degree is off-putting not just because I'm over qualified, but because it means I'm smart. Employers around here don't generally appreciate intelligent employees to begin with, and my out-of-state degree might make it look like I think I'm "too good" for our local colleges. People are very attached to the state schools here. >< But good luck to your sister! Hopefully we'll both have better luck now that the holidays are coming up..
And yes! I'm totally excited about Secret Garden. The trailers look like fun, even if YSH hairstyle makes him look like a poor man's KimuTaku and Binnie's sequined jacket is horrific.

‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal’
(“My love/hate relationship”)
This is the third and last installment concerning the way that I view the drama ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal'.
There are a lot of you who will say “Chill man its just a drama”, and while I can chill ,I want to say again what I have said in the past; The dramas or shows that we see in the media besides being for “Entertainment purposes only” at the end of the day the people in charge us it as as a form of “Social Engineering”.
In my opinion; Dramas like
( Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Hana Kimi, Painter of the Wind, You are Beautiful, Personal Taste, and last but not least Coffee Prince), serve only to “Further” marginalize the Gay/Lesbian community in Korea. I want to make very clear that Korea is not the only country that marginalize a certain strata of its citizens, this takes place all around the world.
When I first saw Hana Kimi J-version, I did like the drama the story was fresh and for the most part it work, but by the time the drama Sungkyunkwan Scandal comes over the horizon, the glee of newness concerning the “Gender Bending” motif has lost most of its appeal.
For me to usage of the Homosexual/bent for two people straight people to fall in love, “is not funny anymore”.
One of the main reasons why this kind of shows appeal to the “straight woman”, its because it allows the viewer to indulge in a “safe fantasy” story line that at the end of the day has no dire consequences, at the end “our Boy” goes back to be the “Heterosexual Prince Charmin” and all in Drama land live happily ever after.
And my answer to that is; when is a proper “Homosexual” couple get their fair chance at “Love” in in prime time in the small and big screen?
The fact remains the same, what this shows tell the Gay/Lesbian community is this; “We can acknowledge that you exist , but you will never be equal to us”.
My main charge against “ Sungkyunkwan Scandal” as in the other dramas is the fact that once the gender bending is discover, the gay issue that has been the main focus of the story becomes all of s sudden a “non issue”, as if gay people some how can turn of their “ Biological Gay Switch” at will, well I guess as of tomorrow I will be straight and turn my switch of and never feel like this again!!!!!!!!
Hello!!! Man how ludicrous that really sound!!! but in essence that is what this shows do the the gay/lesbian experience, and like I said the reason why most of you disagree with me on this, my “Favorite Forum” in all the world is because I can dare to say the at least 95% of the readers are “straight woman”, but I know that there are also Gay/Lesbian people who read this blog, but it is hard to comment on an issue like this if one is not “Gay”, I do fall in that category I am a “Heterosexual Male” who happens to have family members who are “Gay”, and also very close friends who are gay and lesbians, The reason being why I keep trying to shade light on an issue that by its nature makes a lot of people uncomfortable.
The other Issue that I have is one of “Historical Context” and I do not have the time to go in detail, but I will say this much;
There are more physical evidence the condemns “Crown Prince Sado of wrong doing”, the charges against him make him look like the “ Jeffrey Dahmer/Hannibal Lecter” of his day. The Geum-dong-ji-sa is an apology by King Yeongjo, in which he try's to clean his hand in his participation of Prince Sado's murder.
The problem that I have with this premise is that if the Charges against Prince Sado are True, than the death of Yoon-hee's Father and Guh-roo's Brother, essentially they where in vain and the agenda that the King and Guh-roo are pursuing to clear the name of a “Sexual Deviant and Mass Murderer” are futile, and to me that is the real “Tragedy of Sungkyunkwan Scandal”.
Thank you for putting up with my bad attitude at times, I know I can sound mean and scary, but I never mean any harm to any one!!!! Love to all my “Fellow Sungkyunkwan Scandalers”.

I just wanted to thank you for your thoughtful analysis of SKKS and for the courage to post it. I have been a long time reader of Dramabeans and have NEVER posted but felt compelled to let you know that I appreciated your thoughts. I think that in the end you have to accept that a Kdrama starring a pop idol falls soundly in the "fluffy entertainment" category and getting bothered by it is a just a waste of energy (and I am not saying that is you). It would probably be better to not watch in the first place and use that time in a more intellectually productive pursuit.
As for me, I am an Ahjumma (think I am using that correctly? I don't speak Korean) who needed some diversion while on bed rest while pregnant with my second daughter and watching Kdramas on my laptop was a lifeline.
I wish everyone a very Happy Halloween. My 8 year old daughter is making me go as Professor McGonagall to her Hermione Granger. My 10 week old daughter gets a lightning bolt scar on her forehead as baby Harry Potter.
Thanks for all the wonderful posts that I have so enjoyed reading. And a very big thank you to Javabeans, red_pill, cassie.opeia and especially to Girlfriday (because she and I have the exact same taste in dramas and a very similar humor bent).

I agree it's fluffy entertainment, but right now SKKS is on and so is Life is Beautiful. It raises a good question.
Life is beautiful isn't a modern art house film, but it's being put through the ringer because of its gay couple.
I never really understand when people "ship" two same gendered members of a musical unit, and cross dressing runs rampant on variety shows -yet- the show Life is Beautiful becomes really serious business that some whackos claim turn truckloads of youth to being gay. Um. Not really.
But here we have yet another gender-bending show. No one really gets up in arms over these. It's okay, because at the end of the day cinder-"fella" turns back into Cinderella.
A step back and looking at both of these shows is important considering the crazy-fest that's been going on. To you it's nothing, but right now they're like Roseanne circa 1994 stuff.

Wow re-reading my comment makes me come off as strong. I didn't mean that, as I certainly haven't watched enough of SKKS to pour an overflowing haterade onto this debate.
I just am truly concerned for the surfacing extremes in the family-drama slots. (I know SKKS is not a family-slot but it is for the youth) There always seems to be a bizarre mix of makjang, mafia, and homely wholesome family values stuff. It's popcorn worthy but then the fans...
With the way real people get crazy towards actors in real life I worry about the safety of Song Chang Ui and Lee Sang Woo continuing their roles, while SKKS actors will be disregarded because it's "in the past/not totally real".

I think that you still bring up interesting points, but I wanted to point out to you something about SKKS that really interests me in the matter of homosexuality.
Jae-Shin and Yong-Ha. Yong-Ha freely admits to having desires about Jae-Shin, but he "makes them go away" by looking at porn. How many gay guys did we all know in school who did similar actions? I know these guys are in their early twenties, and that in the society that they're in makes having a homosexual relationship nigh impossible, but this is the main couple that I've been rooting for. It is the first time that I've seen a truly romantic love between boys that wasn't used as a joke or comedic relief (especially in the JDrama version of Hana-Kimi, where every instance of homosexuality pissed me off). I don't want Jae-Shin with Yoon-Hee (ducks as rotten food is thrown at her) because he is perfect with Yong-Ha.
So while I know you have a problem with the gender bending story-line, I think that it is interesting that they threw in this other story line parallel to Yoon-Hee and Sung-Jun's. I'm just sayin'.

I figured out how to post from vacation, to give you an AMEN sister on this post!
This is the first guy/guy couple that I have been rooting for seriously in any drama I have seen, and will continue to root for.
They make me happy and they work together. Yong ha wants Jae Shin to be happy but also does not want to let him go. At every turn he tries to help him but blocks his forward progress too. Most of his actions after the first 3 episodes revolve around Jae Shin.

I am in total agreement with you, watching the relationship between "Jae-Shin and Yong-Ha" has made a difference, a small one at that but never the less a bit of a difference. What I like a bout Yong-Ha characters is that he has admitted to having "feelings" towards Jae-Shin that go beyond just mere admiration and camaraderie, and when he has confess those feelings he was not ridicule for having those feelings, not even Jae-Shin made a big issue since I think he has know for the past 10 years that the love that Yong-Ha has for him is of a different nature.
My favorite scene between this couple is the one where
Jae-Shin decides to go as the "Red Warrior" and Yong-Ha try's to stop him and they get in a heated argument, and Yong-Ha is left crying at night by the side of the road.
Scenes like that is what for me makes the drama worthy of being watched, I think many people may think that I really dislike this drama, but on the contrary I have enjoy this drama as much as you guys, the fact of the matter is the amount of time that I have spend commenting on this drama!
but if I must choose a "Ship" to get behind I am with you Lady's, "Yong-Ha and Jae-Shin" are the perfect couple in this drama as far as I am concern!!!!!

Hi, happy friday, everyone.
I haven't been here in ages--too busy--but I went to check something on dramawiki (Brilliant Legacy/Shining Inheritance, I confess--having a Lee Seung Gi withdrawal after the end of Gumiho) and dramawiki isn't there anymore!!! What happened?! Then I thought, oh, the dramabeans crowd will know. Does anyone know? At the top of the page it says the domain name expired. Are the d-addicts people going out of business? I sincerely hope not! I've depended on their meticulous info so often... Such a shock to suddenly not have all that cross-referencing right there!
PS Brilliant Legacy/SI is great. I don't know why I didn't watch it right away.
