Playful Kiss: Episode 11

This episode was sort of low-key, but had some sweet moments and a bit of development. It didn’t have as many “exciting” moments as some other episodes (not that you can really use the word “exciting” with this drama), but there is the implication at the end of the episode that makes up for that.

SONG OF THE DAY

BeBe Mignon – “키도 작고, 예쁘지 않지만…” (Although I’m not tall, or pretty…)

EPISODE 11 RECAP

The morning after is less romantic than Seung-jo’s declaration last night might have suggested. Ha-ni turns out to be a disruptive bed-partner, manhandling Seung-jo while unconscious and stealing the blankets. He sighs with frustration while she remains blissfully asleep.

Ha-ni awakens slowly, remembering happily that she and Seung-jo slept in the same bed. Eyes still closed, she reaches out to feel for him, but he’s already up and a little disgruntled as he tells her about her horrible sleep habits.

Breakfast is a cutely domestic scene, which Seung-jo prepares and Ha-ni revels in. Seung-jo makes nothing of eating together, or getting dressed for the day, or walking out together like the junior version of the happily married couple walking ahead of them, but in my opinion therein lies the sweetness — that comfortable attitude treating this all like it’s mundane. Like you’ve already arrived here naturally in your relationship.

In contrast, Ha-ni doesn’t even try to hide how much she loves it, and jumps to play the part of a wife, picking out a red checked shirt for him to wear. He dismisses the choice and picks another, but I’m betting that red shirt makes a reappearance at some point. (It had better!)

At school, a crowd has gathered in front of a sign. Ha-ni’s jaw drops at the embarrassing declaration, courtesy of Joon-gu:

“Baek Seung-jo at last ♥ Oh Ha-ni. They spent a night of love together! Oh! Ha-ni will definitely be wearing the same clothes as yesterday!”

OMG. Mortifying to the nth degree, no?

The students cast knowing looks at the couple in question, and one of them — Mom in disguise as a nerd, lol — prods Seung-jo to explain what happened. Exasperated, he pulls his mother aside and asks her to cut it out.

School is abuzz with the latest rumors, but Ha-ni has nothing to report to Mom or her friends. Nothing happened.

Even He-ra is uneasy about the gossip, and she makes a roundabout reference to the news, trying to get Seung-jo’s reaction. I dearly wish he’d let her stew in her insecurity, but he cheers her up by saying that she ought to know nothing happened with Ha-ni.

In all the excitement of the night before, Ha-ni has forgotten what she did with her chocolates, which she was never able to give to Seung-jo. She laments the loss, but wouldn’t you know, the box is safely back at Seung-jo’s place.

He opens the box and reads her cute handwritten note:

To: Seung-jo
These are chocolates I made myself, thinking of you. I hope you’ll enjoy them~~ ♥
–Ha-ni!

He smiles at the note and takes a bite of a chocolate… and spits it out. In true Ha-ni fashion, they taste awful. But our little Robot Boy is learning that it’s the thought that counts, and he gives a little laugh.

With exams approaching, Ha-ni tries to study, but realizes that it’s spreading herself too thin to try to prepare for all her subjects. Instead, she’ll focus on English, which is the only class she shares with Seung-jo. (Ergo, she can’t drop out of it.)

She spends late nights studying, and when she shows up on test day, Seung-jo notices her wan expression with some worry. He-ra’s feeling mighty self-confident after being assured that nothing happened between them, so she once again falls back on her hateful habit of masking insults as cheery comments, saying that Ha-ni should probably repeat this level next year.

Ha-ni stares at Seung-jo dreamily through the first half of the test session, marveling and how handsome he looks. To her surprise, he reaches back and swaps papers with her — giving her his finished sheet and taking her empty one.

Best of all is the smile he flashes, which sends He-ra into a tizzy. No, I take that back — best of all is that pissy look on He-ra’s face at Seung-jo’s unexpected gesture. I was a little confused — was he actually helping her on an exam so she could join them next year? But perhaps this is just Ha-ni’s deluded daydreaming… (Note: The editing is rather choppy and confusing in this episode.)

Joon-gu is devastated about the latest development with Ha-ni and despairs that he’ll have to give her up. But he gets some unexpected advice from Kyung-soo sunbae (who sees him looking miserable and gives him some suggestions), and resolves to give it another try, starting with a proper confession of his feelings.

He finds Ha-ni after her test and gravely begins his speech, explaining that he’d almost given up, but decided to stick it through. When her head drops forward, he assumes that she feels guilty, not knowing that she’s actually fallen asleep. Lol.

But no matter, because Ju-ri and Min-ah inform him that nothing actually happened between Ha-ni and Seung-jo, which revives his optimism.

Ha-ni’s in for the shock of her life when a strange student comes up to her during tennis club and asks her to go steady. She doesn’t even know him, much less know how to respond to that, and gapes silently as he talks with Kyung-soo.

This is Kim Ki-tae, who has taken a year off school and is about to re-enroll, making him a sunbae. He tells Ha-ni that he’s known since high school that she likes Seung-jo, but figures he has a chance with her because they’re not officially dating. His self-assured demeanor is not at all shaken at her perplexed reaction, and he asks her on a date this weekend.

Ha-ni’s never been asked out before — she’s always been the pursuer — so after the idea sinks in, she starts to warm to it. Oh, she doesn’t like Ki-tae, but it’s a flattering idea, and she enjoys the attention.

Ju-ri and Min-ah hasten to tell Seung-jo, thinking to light a fire under his indifferent butt, only to get the cool response, “Really? So what?” They say that he might find Ha-ni snapped up by that other guy, but Seung-jo scoffs, “Is that so? I’m not worried.”

But since you happen to say that as you’re wearing your Ha-ni-approved, red-checked shirt, I’m deciding I don’t believe you, NOT ONE BIT.

Mom frets over the possibility of Ha-ni falling for the new guy, bemoaning the day when Ha-ni gets “stolen away,” blaming Seung-jo for his lack of action. This will not do.

Officially in courtship mode, Ki-tae treats her with friendly interest, finding her at school and swinging an arm casually over her shoulders. She stiffens and scoots away, but he doesn’t take offense and follows. It’s interesting how he can do that and not come across sleazy.

Ki-tae explains that at first he was provoked by Seung-jo — that hoobae who does everything so well. Ki-tae had first fixated on his pseudo-rivalry with Seung-jo, but in the process he started to notice Ha-ni, since she was always following Seung-jo around. He found her tenacity attractive, and asks her again to date him — she shouldn’t waste her youth waiting for Seung-jo.

He-ra catches sight of their cozy tete-a-tete, and immediately sizes up the situation. She’s thrilled — that takes Ha-ni away from Seung-jo — and enthusiastically pushes the two toward each other. She even skips away in glee.

Mom does recon, spying on Ki-tae, and admits that he’s much cuter than Seung-jo. Ha-ni assures her not to worry, because she’s only interested in Seung-jo.

That thrills Mom, but she jumps to prevent Ha-ni from rejecting Ki-tae right away. Now that her fears have been assuaged, she wants to take advantage of this scenario to stir Seung-jo’s jealousy. After all, he’s feeling too complacent with Ha-ni always around; he needs a little kick in the pants. Rock on, Mom.

I don’t think Seung-jo is jealous, per se, but he doesn’t love this development, either, and it makes him a little more cutting than usual. When He-ra pushes Ha-ni to date Ki-tae, Seung-jo chimes in: “How lucky for you. They say that if one person throws something away, there’ll be another to pick it up.”

Pride stung, Ha-ni retorts that Ki-tae’s just as smart and good-looking as him, PLUS he treats girls much better! Which is, of course, when Ki-tae steps in, pleased at her vote of confidence. He asks Seung-jo to let Ha-ni come to him now, and Seung-jo replies that Ha-ni’s not his, so he can do whatever he wants.

Seung-jo’s comments tickle Ha-ni’s ire, and with a flash of anger she thinks that she may as well go ahead and have a relationship with Ki-tae. (Cutely, she uses the words “have an affair,” as though dating Ki-tae would be cheating on Seung-jo. God, Seung-jo, can’t you just own up to your feelings already? You totally don’t deserve her devotion.)

At the restaurant, Seung-jo is his usual sarcastic self when he takes Ha-ni’s order, thinking she’s going to spend another day waiting around for him. However, she declares that she’s here to meet someone else, which is when Ki-tae arrives. I have to say I love that little look of surprise on Seung-jo’s face when he realizes Ha-ni’s on a date.

Ha-ni pulls back when Ki-tae slings his arm around her shoulders, but that’s when Seung-jo comes around with their drink order, so she ignores him and reacts enthusiastically to Ki-tae’s date suggestions. Seung-jo pointedly interrupts to deliver the drinks, and sets them down a lot slower than he could. Oh, you.

As soon as he leaves the table, however, Ha-ni deflates and drops her cheerful act.

It’s too bad she doesn’t have any interest in Ki-tae, because he’s pretty much the textbook ideal for a kind, attentive date. He looks after her every comfort and makes sure she’s having fun, and she admits that it’s been a while since she enjoyed herself like this.

Hearing that her crush on Seung-jo dates back four years, Ki-tae tells her that he doesn’t expect her to suddenly get over that and like him, but all he wants is for her to think of him a little. At the end of the date, Ha-ni looks around disappointedly, having secretly hoped that Seung-jo would show.

While looking at Seung-jo from afar in the library, Ha-ni decides things can’t continue like this, because she doesn’t want to use Ki-tae. Time to end it.

Ki-tae, on the other hand, urges her to forget Seung-jo, ignoring her attempt to talk to him. He pulls her aside (grabbing her by the neck, aie!), ironically taking the same stance Seung-jo had with the wall kiss as he leans in… and at the last moment Ha-ni squeals, “No!”

That’s when Joon-gu makes his appearance, throwing a punch and telling him to stop pestering Ha-ni. Ki-tae punches back, and this leads to a full-on fight right there amidst the bookshelves while Ha-ni watches in horror and tries to urge them to stop.

Enter Seung-jo, who tells them that there’s no use fighting over Ha-ni. He grabs her shoulder and pulls her close as he points out, “Even so, I’m the only one Ha-ni likes.” With that, leads her along with his hand still on her shoulders.

HA! He can pretend he doesn’t care, but the fact is that he uses the hand-on-shoulder move purposely to signal the guys to back off, because once they’re alone together he drops the hand. She’s feeling miffed at his ego — how confident he must be to declare that he’s the only one she likes. Seung-jo tells her frankly that she and her mother are so transparent.

They have dinner with the parents that night, after which Dad takes Seung-jo aside to ask about his future plans. He suggests that Seung-jo take over his game company, but Seung-jo answers curtly that his father has planned out his whole future without his input.

After that, Seung-jo drops out of sight for a while, and Ha-ni notes that he quits his restaurant job and has stopped coming to tennis club. It takes a while, but she tracks him down to his new job (tipped off by Kyung-soo) as a groundskeeper at a mountain villa.

He’s exasperated with Kyung-soo for telling everyone where he went — in particular He-ra, who pulls up just moments after Ha-ni. Kyung-soo sees this group outing as his chance to make inroads with He-ra, and proposes that he and Ha-ni team up to keep He-ra and Seung-jo apart.

Ergo: couple games, in which he pairs himself with He-ra. Seung-jo sits this one out, leaving Ha-ni and a disgruntled Eun-jo on the same team.

The task is a scavenger hunt wherein the couples must find all seven stamps that have been placed in the forest. There are a couple of funny moments with the He-ra/Kyung-soo pair, not least because He-ra goes hiking in the woods in four-inch heels. At one point Kyung-soo tosses an object in her direction and yells that it’s a bug, which sends her clutching him in fear.

Ha-ni and Eun-jo are both bummed to be stuck in this game without Seung-jo, but Ha-ni tries to make the best of it. A misstep sends her slipping over a small cliff, and she lands in the ditch below. She’s not hurt, but that leaves her unable to climb back up to the main level. Worse yet, they think they hear the howl of a wild animal, which worries them as nighttime approaches.

Joon-gu also works his way through the forest, intent on sticking by Ha-ni’s side at all times. He spots the hat she lost when she fell, and tries to reach for it — and that sends HIM into the crevasse below with an injured leg. He shouts for Ha-ni, and ironically, it’s that sound that makes her cower in fear.

Without a cell phone signal, Eun-jo and Ha-ni settle down to wait for help, and thankfully Eun-jo has come prepared. He shares his blanket with her, and, seeing her shivering, he holds her hands to warm them. It’s cute.

What’s even more adorable, however, is when they think they hear the wild animal approaching, and Eun-jo tells Ha-ni to take cover behind him. Aw! He’s a little boy with the heart of a man.

Seung-jo has remained behind to work, but he’s tipped off that something’s wrong when He-ra and Kyung-soo wearily trudge back and are surprised that Ha-ni’s not back yet. Alarmed, Seung-jo takes off for the forest at a run, knowing something must have happened.

Finding Ha-ni and his brother, he helps them back to safety, and then also finds Joon-gu stranded in the ditch and helps him as well. Joon-gu’s reluctant to accept his help, embarrassed to be at his mercy, and vows to repay this debt.

The next morning, Ha-ni takes a stroll outside, taking a seat at a bench. Seung-jo joins her there, where he tells her, “You should’ve come alone.” He points out, “I thought you liked me and all that. Don’t you know how I feel?”

She starts to say, “I know you wouldn’t think of someone like me…”

He stops her by putting a hand on her shoulder, and then — OMO OMO! — leans down to kiss her.

Only… that’s when Ha-ni wakes up from her daydream, having nodded off on the bench. OH YOU FAKERS. How dare you do this to me and my heightened expectations?

Ha-ni realizes the kiss was just in her dreams, and wishes she’d dreamed a little longer.

But something feels a little different, and she touches a finger to her mouth as she muses, “Still, somehow my lips feel…”

And the camera pans away to reveal Eun-jo, standing at a distance, reacting in shock to something he perhaps didn’t expect to see…

COMMENTS

So the big question: DID HE OR DIDN’T HE?

Also, the little question: That “he” is Seung-jo, right?

At first I wondered if we were supposed to think it was Eun-jo who kissed Ha-ni, based on his reaction — he looks nervous and is breathing harder than usual. We DID see him softening toward Ha-ni when they were stuck in the woods together, but still, I don’t think that makes that much sense. Plus, the ending teddy-bear image shows Eun-jo Bear watching Seung-jo Bear kiss Ha-ni Bear… so there’s that.

Anyway.

This episode (and this entire series, really) made me think how curious it was that you could have a drama without any angst that is still enjoyable. Because, let’s face it: there’s nothing in this drama to worry you, to give you that feeling of suspense or anxiety for the characters. Even if all romantic comedies are a foregone conclusion (boy and girl find love), conflict and narrative tension keep things interesting on their way to achieving Happily Ever After. But in this drama, it’s even more obvious than usual (if that’s possible) how it’ll end, so I feel no suspense, and none of the “complications” are really very complicating.

And yet, despite that, I still find it really entertaining and heartwarming to watch. Hm. It’s interesting.

The relationship between Ha-ni and Seung-jo is developing at a snail’s pace, and I’ll admit there are moments where it gets close to being wearying. Yes, Ha-ni likes Seung-jo. Yes, he likes her back but refuses to admit it. I think it’s time for use to get a little more than that same old, same old — or at least bigger expressions of affection on his part. They haven’t lost me yet, but I do think it’s about time for the couple to be making greater strides as the drama’s finish approaches. I look forward to that.

Hi Everyone,

I have one question.
If you are SJ, who would you pick as your girlfriend - Ha Ni or Hye Ra?

hani, just because she's the cutest most adorable heroine ever... although haera is actually really pretty and funny.

Ha Ni. Hands down-- she's just so darn CUTE.

I don't think it's fair to ask, since most of us are pretty Hani-biased.

depends on whether you pick with your heart, or your brain...:)

If I were a guy, i'd pick Hani, someone that is so huggable, cute, sweet, will move heaven & earth for me, submissive, good strong body to "love", and bear children, funny & a bit clueless at times for me to tease her about. She can't cook good yet, but that can change. Gets along with my family and has an easy going kind dad. It's pretty perfect.

I agree completely
I mean seriously how can any man not love a girl like Oh Ha Ni..She is seriously such a perfect girl and so crazy in love with the guy that she will do anything..I mean the submissive part is a bit of a turn off but i can understand why a man would love that you know..
Also I think she is pretty smart, just in her own way..I mean she is kind of slow with her reactions but i honestly don't think she is like "stupid"..

Still not loving the perm, especially with the headband and the wet hair look as well. That whole ending was a bit confusing but the bears gave it away completely.

I do agree that this drama is very carefree and there's nothing that makes me worry, which is a complete opposite from SKS. Although there are 3 very hot boys in that drama.. there's a lot of evil brewing. It's been so long since I saw the Taiwanese version that I don't remember much of the details. Although I thought the second lead in the Taiwanese version was hotter than the actual lead.

Hani is just so cute and adorable, well, those who said she's ugly sure have no taste. I always like her hair and you can actually play doll with her by doing all sorts of hairstyle and dressing her up in all types of dresses. Yes, she's like a doll, how can anyone not find her adorable? She's the only actress I find this adorable and natural.
I'm sure KHJ agrees to that.

There are many "beautiful" faces that are ugly I'd say. The "It" factor is hard to describe. It's the whole person, the soul, that make one lovable or not. People are free to love whatever kind. But it's sad to say such a cute girl is ugly...those comments are ugly.

I agree. I find her beauty very refreshing amidst all the plastic-ness in the K-entertainment industry. And she seems like a very likeable person in real life too.

And yes, even KHJ said the same thing at the press conference. He said JSM is cute. And calls her Hani. I don't know why but the 15 year-old in me want to squee when he said that. :)

Looks like their sticking pretty closely to the manga plot wise.. I like the way they played it out. It's just too bad that Miss Kaoru Tada (author of the manga) passed away before she could complete the story.

This drama has the highest number of stalkers lol...and they are all funny. Especially Mr. 40...love him...funniest of the lot followed by BSJ's mom, Ha Ni, Jun Goo, d new guy Ki Tae and finally Hae ra (not a stalker but clingy much)...when is SJ gonna join d stalker brigade? lol

Thanks JB for this recap. I've been following your recaps even after watching each episode in case I miss out on something but this time, I really needed this one to figure out some of the sequences.

I've watched ISWAK 1&2 as well as Itazura no kiss and I really wish the producers of PK had gone for the 20 episode-stretch that was rumoured in the beginning. This particular episode is proof that you cannot stuff everything in a single episode without sacrificing story flow. URGGH! The whole fun about the KiTae/Keita/QiTai character is how he makes the BSJ character realize that he is experiencing the all too human emotion of jealousy. But in PK, the guy is only a see-through foil for Baek omonim's scheme.

Some of the earlier comments ranted about ISWAK's Xiang Qin being irritating but at least, her relationship was allowed to build up. This episode's ending, although it was faithful to the manga, made no sense since there was no indication whatsoever that BSJ was warming up to the next step. Really stupid editing, writing and directing.

'Nuff said. I still like this rom-com simply because of OHN. She stays consistent and honest about her feelings. AJA, AJA, Oh Ha Ni!

i don't think ki tae is supposed to be keita/qitai.
*Spoiler*
Keita/Qitai only appears when kotoko/xiangqin goes to nursing school. This is the second part of the manga and the second series for the taiwanese version.

In the taiwanese version, ki tae's character is actually how it is portrayed here. except that he is younger and eventually ends up with another girl. xq and this guy becomes good friends. He does not appear for the purpose of allowing zhishu/naoki to learn about human emotions such as jealousy.

just thought to clarify. =)

I anticipate Wednesdays and Thursdays nowadays because of this series. I was able to watch and enjoy the Taiwanese version 1 & 2 and have high hopes for this one. For a second there, I also thought she was dreaming! And it makes me giggle like I am back in highschool!

Thank you for the narrative and looking forward to a little more progress in their relationship. I am thinking that the Boy Robot is too confident of Ha-ni's loyalty. I sure would want to see him jealous! haha

Hmm... made no sense? I think it does but from my point of view. BSJ has been showing his warmth side and hinting an obvious answer when OHN said that her heart may change. He simply replied that he never thinks that OHN will. And that says a lot.

And seeing OHN again after a while probably stirred something inside of him. How can that ending doesn't make any sense? He clearly misses his private stalker a lot. What next step? He already kisses her before and even spend the night together. But that's IMO ^^

Ive never seen any version of PK so this is all new to me. I was thinking of reading the manga version and watching the Taiwanese version but im gonna wait after the drama is over. I dont want to ruin it for myself coz i have a bad habit of comparing different adaptations of the same story (like BBF, Hana Yori Dango, and Meteor Garden).

I admit having a hard time clicking on my mouse to read this recap, let alone watching the actual episode. LOL.

After thinking twice, I'm here reading your recap. Thanks JB, such an entertaining recap, I laughed out too. Then, omo omo, my jaw dropped at the last past, the kiss, didn't expect that!

Gotta check on tonight episode and see for myself. *fanning*

I wonder if they have turned one of Ha-ni's friends into the love interest for Joon-gu. In the original story Joon-gu's love interest was a american girl obsessed with japanese culture especially men. But are they keeping that side of the story or not. They also had that in the TW version.

omg thanks for the recap! i feel like i HAVE to read the recaps here just to assure myself that YES, THAT DID HAPPEN IN THE EPISODE..hahah.

i'm not really feeling Ki-Tae sunbae, plus i haven't watched the previous versions so i'm totally clueless bout the storyline..but i thought he was kinda cute. but kinda creepy, no? and kinda sudden for him to appear halfway thru the drama..

loved the did it-didn't it kiss at the end..and i'm damn curious about what eun jo saw that put that look on his face..

can't wait for the live streaming tonite! dammit MBC should just sub their dramas already!

wow, your recaps are awesome! such a shame i only discovered this site a few days ago...

it's awesome how you notice all the small things-
like BSJ wearing the hani-approved shirt!! i didn't even notice that... of course he couldn't wear it the day she chooses it- but the day after, no problemo :)

and i must say i delight in your anger over hae-ra's fury-like behaviour----- because i share it. i just don't get why BSJ doesn't just tell her to LEAVE. NOW. after seeing her virtually pushing ha ni away from his side, i'll just wish for her to even be abandoned by that crazy tennis sunbae. seriously, such a b****!

anyway, love your blog and will keep reading it :)

i agree that this drama is so predictable and that there were moments that i feel it's a bit dragging due to a snail phased relationship development between seungjo and hani.

the cutesy and adorable oh hani and mr. tin man with no heart seungjo really what make this drama an enjoyable one. all of their interactions are never amiss. all are enjoyable and feel good. each one will paint a smile on your lips.

i love this drama just because of how light it is. the characters are never complicated (though i think seungjo is). it's kind of a rest from all the heavy korean dramas i've seen so far. my heart had finally taken a moment's good rest and a gleeful beating after having a million of an-almost-heartbreaking-moments.

Thanks for the great funny update
I’m not able to decide if I feel happy or disappointed about this epi , like u already said the editing took the sharm of many scenes and also the non-developpment of kim ki hae-OHN-BSJ love story made feel disappointed a bit but still many cute scenes were there too : the cutest one is OHN-ESJ while lost in the jungle and how ESJ was so caring to his Noona ( was so happy when he called her noona , that was so cute ) , then the chocolate Box scene , I think one of the most adorable things in BSJ/KHJ is his cute smile and he was smiling all the way during that scene and eventhough the chocolates were awfull but he enjoyed the whole gesture and the meaning of it .
Loved also how he smiled when he told OHN that she’s staring @ him when he is about to change his clothes
and the last scene is that arm aound OHN’s shoulders and declaring that she only loves him so no need to fight over her to the other two rivales , that was very revealling and eventhough he told OHN that he knows that his mum and her did that to make him jealous but he wasn’t , he surely was jealous and didn’t want anyone to even think that he can take his OHN from him ( especially with the new comer who is , in addition of being hot and intelligent , he has a good heart and he really loves OHN and is able to show her his love which is not the case of the Cold Robot BSJ )
eagerly waiting for today’s epi to see the hug and some other cute moments maybe , what I’m really waiting for is when BSJ decides to get married to that banker’s ( or dad’s buisness partner ) daughter , even though I hate watching OHN crying and sad but I know ( if the editing crew make some effort to give us a good editing ) we will enjoy this whole track I’m sure

I totally agree with you with the chocolate scene and the changing of clothes. I squealed to my heart's content and repeated the scene over and over. My gosh, I kinda check myself if my sanity is still intact because Wed and Thurs are pure heaven. I know that is kind of a shallow happiness but anything that makes me feel better is good. I don't need all that angst there is...lol

Thanks JB for the quick recap. Somthing is bugging me -- if no one knows Joon-gu is in the camp, what makes BSJ goes out to the rescue???

Ahh, the bed scene is too cute, no wonder KHJ is leading in the Most Favourite Leg Pillow survey.

LOL I definitely agree though this is a story that you kind of can guess at the ending, it is something I could (and did) watch over and over again

One of the reason why the interview ISWAK director gave about talking to the husband of the mangaka made me tear up

It seems that the bear scenes are quite forgivable for no, haha.. I would say that KHJ looks a lot more handsome now than his BOF days. Imo, I don't see any actor playing BSJ other than him.. Or maybe i just got used to it?.. Nah, simply because JHK always gives justice to his role in this show. and as for JSM, I agree that OHN is still charming even if she does annoying things. I personally like her when she acts as a gangster member and cornered and asked BSJ whether he wants to be with her or be buried alive in the coffin..lol.. JSM can be a pretty villain too!

Oh I love BSJ's mom!

Thoug I've watched the other adaptations of this show (anime / taiwanese version), and yet they can still move, excite and surprise me in so many ways. It's amusing how each because the characters are developing as each episodes unfold. I'll be watching it till the end.

Isn't it too much to ask for its season2? :D

PS:
Maybebe a little late but i have a feeling that they intentionally left out the 2nd kiss part where Eunjo was admitted at the hospital..And it's just going to be revealed in the later part of the show to OHN (and ot us).

I wonder ehat happen to Bye Bye Sea's cut scene. I find it cute whenever they sing "Jang-nan-seu-reon kiss!" :D

Just finished watching Episode 11 on viikii while reading the caps alongside, and can I just say Kyung Soo is hilarious! The whole mountain scene was so entertaining.

And is Kim Tae Gi only going to be in this one episode? It's a little disappointing. I thought he'd be a serious romantic rival or at least be able to stir a little bit more jealousy in Seung Jo. He didn't really leave much of an impact... Though I did enjoy his scenes with Ha Ni before the awful neck-grabbing.

Hi Javabeans,

I really like your recaps and rather thorough break down of each drama you recap.

I know that you have watched many dramas and (kind of) have some kind of expertise in this field. But what I want to know is what draws you into actually recapping a drama. Why is it that you recap 'My Girlfriend is a Gumiho' instead of 'Baker King Kim TakGu' which is more popular or why is it that you recap 'Playful Kiss' instead of 'Sungkyunkwan Scandal' which didn't clash with 'MGIAG' when 'MGIAG' was still airing or whatever other dramas you can think of?

Of course I'm not implying that you should recap everything (that would be crazy) nor that dramas like 'BK KTG' is better than 'MGIAG' or 'PK' is better than 'SSK'. I love them all quite equally but I really want to know what distinctive characteristic is it in dramas like MGIAG and PK that starts your writing-adrenalin-rush going instead of the rest.

Thank you.

Honestly SJ, if you didn't like her enough, why bother staying on the bed despite her "slapping" and "hugging"? aren't you better off sleeping on the floor?

oh why did hair stylist style hani's hair in that weird fringe-bun way? who would wanna go on a date with that hairdo.. gosh. puzzles me. Hani seemed to enjoy her date with the sunbae.. seeing them together at the park.. they look really compatible.

SJ thinks that Hani will always stay by his side simply becos he can read her mind and know what she thinks, therefore he has that confidence.. but i choose to see it as being selfish. Robot boy, you cannot have your pie and not eat it!

Here's my 2 cents, what i've benefited most out of this PK crack is that it feels like i'm 18 again, which is a long long way back...lol ;)

I seemed to have teleported myself back in time, back to college days....where i still remember so vividly the feelings of first crush, the craziness and laughter of my classmates dancing and singing in the classroom, the anxiety and fear of preparing for the much dreaded exams, the heartpounding effect when my crush walk past...Goodness, that's been a long way....

As much as i didn't really feel for this episode, blame it on the confusing and random edits, i still had a few heartfelt smiles, like when Hani was seated behind SJ during the english test, i swear if it's my crush sitting in front of me, i would have handed in a blank sheet too, seriously ~ Okay, that's if i'm still 18!

While i find Kitae's sudden confession and adoration of HB abit abrupt and unexpected, i was touched by his sincerity, small gestures and warm words, he's the direct opposite of SJ, one is cold, oblivious, quiet and serious, and the other is warm and attentive.

WHO would you choose??? well, it seems obvious that the latter makes a better choice, as the old saying goes, you will probably be happier with someone who loves you more than be stucked with someone whom you love more, i disagree though, i always think that you can grow feelings but you can never grow love, that's what makes love so complicated, SIGH!

And HN was never once attracted to either Kitae or JG, she may have some feelings for JG, but it's more out of guilt and friendship, this snail has long ago set her sights on SJ, and has never wavered.

I was dissapointed and confused with the scene where SJ supposedly kiss HN at the bench, it's really not his style, and nothing seemed to have happened before.... that warrants this action or feeling, well...at least it reaffirmed the fact that he's aware of his own feelings and development, this will eventually lead us to another level of their relationship.

And, like JB, i really love that fleeting but dissapointed look when SJ saw HN at the restuarant w Kitae, its subtle but that's the moment where i can really tell that HN does means alot to him.

Here here! For High school crushes that follow to College!

I have to admit, when I write I often use the residual feelings I had of those times as a muse. And even a simple text to the guy, we're still in good terms, gets my creative juices flowing.

Well, write what you know, right?

And I concur about your last statement. BSJ a few more cracks on that facade of yours!

I really have no patience for Seung Jo. His feigned indifference and cold demeanor towards Hani have caused her a lot of pain. Really, however he feels towards her, he has been very cruel and I don't really want Hani to forgive him without a lot repentance on his part. A kiss won't do it!

But seriously though, I'd probably hate it too if my mom was like her. My personality is a little bit like SJ's.

Is it just my imagination or is hae-ra trying to copy HN's hairstyle? Was that a black hamster I saw in her hair? :/

Thanks JB for the recap! Hope I can watch the episode soon...busy busy busy.....sigh

really bad editing- the test scene was so confusing, because her test is suddenly empty after SJ gave it to her? Also, why were they talking (and so loudly) in the test room? I thought that was really awkward...

In addition, with the kiss scene, I thought it was a fantasy because the words SJ said seemed too cheesy and unrealistic, so maybe he did kiss her but didn't say those things?

One thing that I like though, is this confusion. In ISWAK, we see the kiss and so does the little brother. But in this scene, because we are in Ha Ni's pov, she's sleeping and dreaming, so it becomes muddled.

I've practically read, and watched all versions of Itazura na Kisu and the Korean version is pretty much faithful with the manga. I love how they made Hani not as stupid as the cracked up Taiwan version, "It Started with a Kiss", coz with that one my sister didn't even get to finish the 1st eps.

I agree 100% that Hani is so adorably cute, but couldn't say the same for Seung Jo's acting. But in all fairness to the guy that's how Irie-kun in the manga is portrayed...and this guy lurves reading mangas! So, he must've picked it up from there. The subtle nuances in his expression indicates improvement and I'm liking better here than in BOF.

Thanks for the entertaining recap, it's always a delight to read yours and girlfriday's. Rock on!

This episode is brought to us by the green eyed monster otherwise known by its nickname jealousy and it resides inside a boy that doesn't even know that that's what it is...

(and yes, it visited me for awhile too in the beginning of this episode as i watched Jung So Min with gritted teeth while she sleeps beside MY Hyun Joong while i can only dream about doing the same in this entire lifetime...

By the way, while we're on the subject anyone care to tell me what the heck is Ha Ni taking to be able to sleep soooo deeply beside such gorgeousness?

If that were me, i would be up all night plotting and scheming as to how i can jump him and then wake up the next day pretending that it was the sleep fairy who made me do it...

*cue deep intake of breath before clapping my hand to my mouth in all wide eyed innocence*

I DID WHAT? NOOOOOO... YOU DON'T TELL ME... )

As Ha Ni lives my fantasy for me of doing wifely duties for Seung Jo (Hyun Joong in my case) and i absolutely froth at the mouth with envy, i also can't help feeling dejected seeing Joon Gu all mopey and lost...

I know that the way he runs after Ha Ni and her not giving him the time of day is a lost cause but there is just something sweet about his absolute dedication and blind loyalty to Ha Ni that just makes me wish that there were two of her to divide between him and Seung Jo...

As i....

*trails off and pauses for a full minute*

OH. SWEET. LAWD. JEEBUS.

Where the hell was i?

What was i doing before this scene?

Who am i?

Dang it! Seung Jo in that bathrobe and his hair wet like that just made me lost my mind!

I swear authorities ought to give him a license to carry those good looks around because heaven forgive us all, it is just plain LETHAL!

And GAHHHHHH!!! Just when my heart rate has reached 200, you make him smile over that box of chocolate that Ha Ni gave him after spitting it out? Seriously Miss Scriptwriter? SERIOUSLY?Spazzing and fangirling all in one scene?

Are you seriously trying to kill us?

*takes a gulp of water and fans self before continuing*

As i get a grip back on reality with the arrival of stalker boy version 2 in the person of Gi Tae (version 1 of course would always be Joon Gu... but CHINCHA! What is it with this show? If this is real life we will not be able to even know these characters because they will all be slapped with restraining orders, Mama Baek being indicted with the most count...), I can't help but think to myself that this is what Ha Ni and Seung Jo really need...

For a new face to arrive to rock the boat of the dynamics of their relationship and for Ha Ni to feel how it is to be pursued in a romantic way by a man that she can look at with fresh eyes and not in the familiar way that she looks at Joon Gu...

Honestly, seeing her looking like she's having the time of her life in that date with Gi Tae somehow gave me some Mama Baek like feelings of panic as i felt myself beset with worry about what would happen now between her and Mr. Hot Unfeeling Android...

(but what about the OTP? And does that mean that the warmed up version of Robot boy will once again revert to his normal, unfeeling self?

*me pouts and whines* But smiling Seung Jo is so much hotter!)

But alas! I worried for nothing as Ha Ni might be like any other girl who enjoys the flattery of a good looking guy but TRUE LOVE always prevails...

She might enjoy the moment but in the end her thoughts still go back to the person that she really hopes she can be with and of course, that's none other than Little Mr. Perfect...

*Yays all around!*

(Sorry Gi Tae... your confidence might be impressive but you're no match for Seung Jo... Just ask Joon Gu... He's been trying for a reallyyyyyyyyy longggggggggg time and so far has scored zero points while Seung Jo has already racked up hundreds even without trying!)

But Seung Jo?

When will this boy ever learn?

I can already make a book out of the instances when he tries to act oh soooo cool in his usually unaffected manner about how Ha Ni is not even making a mark on his world but deep inside he's soooo falling for her hook, line and sinker...

Well, I've got a newsflash for you, Mr. Grumpypants....

You're a big, fat, liar and everyone's on to your game, because honestly?...

You're not a very good one...

You might be a Genius but to tell you the truth? You've got as much tact as a bear...

(Dissing Ha Ni's choice of clothes but wearing it the next day? Not caring about her date but hanging out longer than necessary around her just to eavesdrop? But best of all, stepping in at a moment that does not really concern you one bit, like when two boys are fighting over Ha Ni's affection just so you can stake your claim oh so childishly about how they need not bother because she likes you and ONLY YOU...)

SMOOTH... Really smooth!

NOT!

Good thing Ha Ni is as dense as a London fog and can't see through you, Otherwise?

She'd be laughing at your face like...

*me checks watch*

Right this very instant!

(Well, in reality it might be more bouncing around in excitement rather than laughing... *sigh*)

However, it is that push and pull thing that you're doing that is drawing Ha Ni and hundreds of thousands of us even nearer to you too like moths to a flame...

(What can i say? Some girls are just plain suckers for pain and sarcasm and for someone as crushable as you? Honey, you can give me all you got and i would still be smiling at the end of it all like i just won the amazing race... hehehe!)

You may be as prickly as a porcupine but dammit! You have the tenderest heart underneath that moody exterior...

You care for Ha Ni in more ways than she can ever imagine and if that stolen kiss is not enough proof that you like her just as much as she does?

Well, at least in this case its proof that DREAMS do come true and if Eun Jo's dazed expression was not a dead giveaway, then we always have Episode 12 to look forward to or 13 or 14 or 15 or...

*trails off and shrugs*

Whatever...You know the drill...

You get it right? That i can wait until such time that your defenses come crumbling down and that you can kiss Ha Ni with all the love you feel for her when she is wide awake and straight into her face?

(Do me a favor please? Some open mouthed action would be much appreciated too and it would tide me over for some months as i imagine myself being there in Ha Ni's place... )

Javabeans, thank you for recap! So fast!!!

Guys, I have to comfort you :) Seung Jo really kissed Ha Ni while she was sleeping! I remember the anime version and manga, so that's it! Eung Jo had seen that, that's why he was so shocked then, hehe)

I did really enjoy bed scene! Ha Ni was hilarious)) Her way in sleeping is really something! Just want to say: "Seung Jo, you have to get used to it!" Haha))

Mama rules =) She, definitely, can make a show!

It was so sweet that Seung Jo took Ha Ni's chocolates :) Notwithstanding it's favor, he really liked the present))

I loved new guy! He is so sweet and cute! If it wasn't Seung Jo, I would definitely give him way! He's really concerned and sweetheart like our beloved Joon Gu! He was so adorable in his attempts to save Ha Ni, though he failed. Anyways, I love him! And I love Eung Jo, that little gentle child who tried to protect Ha Ni and hold her hand when she gor cold. My heart was melting :)

All I can say, the last episode was totally sweet =)

Looking forward to see the next, which I can see only in 3 days cuz I have to go outside my city....Anyways, I'll come back, watch episode 12 and them come straight here to read one more awesome recap and comment, of course :)

So, see you, guys!
