Sungkyunkwan producers would also like an extension

With its adorable and heartwarming storylines, not to mention engaging cast, Sungkyunkwan Scandal has attracted a mighty fanbase that belies its modest ratings numbers (although those have been steadily climbing as well). As a result, it has been flooded with fan requests for extensions, and even despite it being late in the game (with only this week and next week remaining), producers have also spoken up to say that they’d be eager for one as well.

First off, the caveat: Don’t get your hopes up. We can hope, but I don’t think an extension is forthcoming with the obstacles it would have to overcome in a very short period of time.

With that said…

To compare the fan fervor of Sungkyunkwan Scandal to other popular dramas, the source article compares the online activity from the first 16 episodes (which is what Sungkyunkwan had aired as of the article’s publish date) of various dramas. Sungkyunkwan’s official homepage message board has more than 120,000 messages posted by fans, which is triple the response of Chuno, four times as many as Baker King Kim Tak-gu, and twice as many as IRIS.

Additionally, the drama’s board at popular portal DC Inside has 160,000 messages. It is DC Inside’s second-most-active drama board, next to uber-hit Boys Before Flowers.

It’s interesting to note that those other dramas all hit 30% ratings (with Baker King topping 40%), while Sungkyunkwan started off at a modest 6.3% and has steadily risen to its highest number last Tuesday, 14.3%. (It was aided by the departure of long-running Dong Yi.)

The fans who are eager for more of their drama crack point out that the love story between Yoon-hee (Park Min-young) and Sun-joon (Micky Yoochun), with only three episodes left after today’s broadcast.

The CEO of production house Lemon Rain, Kim Dong-rae, said, “It’s a story that can easily be extended, by ten episodes or any number. Even in this situation, we could add another four. We’d like to do it, if only the actors would agree, but it’s difficult because if the production period goes on for longer than planned, it interferes with their schedules.” He added that it’s disappointing to end it this way.

What would he like to do in the hypothetical situation of an extension?

Kim said, “We would be able to get deeper into the emotions of Moon Jae-shin (Yoo Ah-in), and expand on Lee Sun-joon and Kim Yoon-hee’s story. Aside from the love story, there’s a lot of plot about the academic angle. There’s so many good stories to tell that I’m sure we could really make a great drama, but realistic conditions aren’t supportive.”

The difference between extending a drama like Dong Yi and Sungkyunkwan Scandal is because the former is longer-running, has sufficient time to establish its presence, and consequently draws in enough advertising money that the stations are eager to capitalize upon. Miniseries, however (20 episodes or less), often find themselves hurting financially with extensions, and production companies are less likely to move forward with them. (Plus, despite the show’s online popularity, mid-teen ratings are usually not considered high enough to be worth the broadcaster’s while.)

This is why it’s unusual for Sungkyunkwan’s producers to be so willing to take that financial risk, and to declare themselves ready to forge forward with full confidence.

The sticking point remains the cast, and in particular lead actor Micky Yoochun, who is about to embark on an Asian tour with his pop group JYJ. Initially the drama was scheduled to conclude filming at the end of September, but that has already been pushed back once and conflicted with his schedule.

A few more statistics that attest to the drama’s popularity (as if we didn’t already know): The OST has sold over 120,000 albums, and the episodes have been seen online from KBS’s homepage 190,000 times (compared with Chuno’s 150,000 and Baker King’s 130,000).

Although I'm in love w/ this drama, extending it might hurt it. They should just be humble and leave on a good note. ^_^

yea I was just thinking today, I really want this drama to continue for just a tad longer.
I feel like each character needs their moment. I want to see more of Gu Yong ha ... we still don't know his backstory! And Moon Jae Shin... okay whatever I just want to see him. He's super hot!

Definitely agree with the producers - there's so much in the academic angle. Really see how the students are reacting to things they're learning, not weird stupid obstacles In soo throws at them.

Sigh.. but it's okay. I'll live. I'd rather a planned out story than a rushed ending.

I don't have the link but Yoo Ah In has indicated that he'd rather not continue on as Moon Jae Shin and that he wouldn't come back for a sequel. Per the article, he definitely didn't want to wear the Guhro persona seemingly ever again. Almost seemed burdened by it.

Wow, that's a serious bummer, especially since we have so much fun watching him. I would much rather have actors doing work they enjoy. He seems to be pouring his all into the role, so I'm sure it would get exhausting. I hope that doesn't mean all the publicity of how the cast members are getting along was exaggerated.

Did he talk about which aspects he found burdensome? I wonder if it's because he probably can't walk down the street anymore without having women mob him, a la Robert Pattinson...

Oh, and yeah, I'm worried. Can't let on any spoilers but I am worried. That said, there have been some folks who've been assuring folks at other forums that MJS will not die.

One of the reasons why I liked SKKS a lot is that it avoided a lot of staged idiocy, save for a few moments involving Yoonhee. Unfortunately, episode 18 ends with some staged stupidity. Let's just say I need to have a talk with my girl Yoonhee. Idiot. Idiot. Idiot. You weren't lying when you described yourself as not so bright.

LOLz @ the Robert Pattinson comment. I shouldn't be laughing, but then I find anything related to Twilight amusing (except for the soundtrack, which is awesome).

Too bad though - but i can understand how playing a dude who has nothing to live for but to continue the legacy of his dead brother could be burdensome. It could also be that he's not normally so dark and brooding, so he's stretching himself to fit the role. Doing an awesome job, but I agree with jubilantia - he should find a role that he enjoys. Can't wait to see what he does next.

Google Twilight in Fifteen Minutes! Actually, here: http://community.livejournal.com/m15m/19551.html
It's a written movie parody and it is the funniest thing EVER. Ever. (Sorry javabeans and co.! You guys are awesome too!)The blogger who does them enjoys Twilight with the full knowledge that it is pure, not-found-in-nature, shouldn'tbutgottahaveit Twinkie-ness- so you get analysis of the fandom as well as some hilarious comments on the books.

She makes a comment that Pattinson has a built-in security system in his hair- The Hair- to ward off crazy fangirls. If Yoo Ah-in isn't wearing a wig, I'm expecting his to start getting more unruly aaaaany day now...

I scanned the article very cursorily, but he specifically mentioned his discomfort at having to wear "the beast" persona. I can't remember whether he'd said that he was getting requests for him to bear his chest and he found those requests burdensome or that he found burdensome bearing his chest, but either way...

It'd be good if someone could find the link to the original article. It was in Korean. Can't remember how I came by it.

Just tried tracking down the article but can't find it. Instead, I came across a bunch that say that, while he appreciates the Guhro character and that he thinks he did a good job of bringing it alive, he'd like to give a go at a Yeorim-esque character in the future.

Interesting. My understanding of the beast type of character is that they are totally ruled by hormones and manly jerkiness. What makes Guh-ro fascinating is that while he seems like a "beast", sort of, on the outside, he's actually... not. Jae-shin might even be the least beastly of the whole crowd, because he exudes quiet, if self-deprecating, confidence rather than the overcompensating insecurity I associate with the beast-y characters. Also, Jae-shin has tons of layers, just like Yong-ha.

From the rest of his projects, it seems like this is only the first or second time he's played that kind of character, although I haven't actually seen any of them. Maybe he's worried about being typecast as the resident hunk, which could definitely happen. ("You only like me for my body!") I'm sure some fans are all about the hotness, but I know I also enjoy the more subtle sides of his character. Lots of times second leads are the guys the casting people think are pretty enough, but with no acting chops (see: Korean Rui, Shin-woo in YAB, Sir Angst in Gumiho). He conveys an effortlessly soft aspect to Guh-ro that I'm not sure anyone else could have done.

I think it's great that he wants to try new things, but he's had the opportunity to convey tons of emotion through the Crazy Horse character, and at least now he's got some fame to help him get his next role.

Side note: I'm getting flashbacks to adorable Guh-ro in episode 8 when he put more clothes on. Could it possibly be that he's actually shy about his body like Guh-ro? Kyaaaaaaa!

Although I commented differently on the first page, this too seems reasonable. If he wants to move on, then it shouldn't happen. I jumped the gun on your last comment bc I'm breathing SKKS. =)

Apologies. And thank you for sharing that bit with us. ^^

It would be a good idea to have the back stories of Guhro, Yeorim and Chosun shown instead of episode extensions. I would also like to know the back story about the Geum Jang Di Sa and Yoon-hee's dad and Jae-shin' brother. That would be at least 4 episodes that wouldn't need Micky Yoochun's presence.

Not that I don't want him, but his schedule is whack.

I would love to see extensions because as the producers have said, there are just so many good stories in this drama, not just the love of the main couple. Every single character no matter how small has a story to tell. But, it's like mission impossible because YooChun's schedule would make it hard for him to do so. I can't believe we only have one week left. I don't want to part with this drama at all T___T. It's been a long time since I last liked a drama this much. No, not like, I LOVE IT!

This is the one drama that I think would be fantastic with an extension because I think they could've spent more time in the academic/student life aspect instead of jumping right into the romantic subplot :/ It all seems a little abrupt, but if they had like a 4 episode extension, the romance could be more spread out and they could actually spend some time on song joong ki too!! He needs more airtime!

I was wondering why there's no talk of an extension despite the show being so great - the writing, acting is excellent! Every episode has something amusing, heartwarming to remember/rewatch (i lose count of the number of times i have re-watch episode 8 and 16!)

with 4 more episodes...there's alot of 'stories' to be told
1) finding the geumdaiji (the book)
2) everyone dealing with the fall out that its sun-joon's father whos the evil guy (especially sun-joon having to face the fact that he's father is bad)
3) bad guys getting their just-deserts
4) sunjoon - yoon hee's continuation of their romance
5) what about in-soo's sister? (is she going to suddenly leave the 2 love birds alone?)
6) how yoon-hee & yoon shilk are going to return to their respective places
7) insoo & choson's story/ending
8) yongha & & jaeshin story/ending?

i hope the writers dont leave me frustrated with the ending!!

btw, if anyone is interested in the novel, check out this website which has english translations of the 4 leads.

I'm against an extension...because I fear it may ruin the whole drama and get too draggy...if they had wanted to extend it...they should've planned it earlier...aim for a 25 episode drama or something...and now that SJ-YH love arc has somewhat settled (with them both having confessed to each other) at the moment, I would rather they give more focus on other characters...or other plots...

1. In soo is still very much two dimensional to me...I mean, I feel that there can be a whole lot more about his character, esp his relationship with chosun

2. I wanna know more abt chosun too...how she ended up linked with In soo's dad

3. In soo's dad was originally interested in Yoon Hee as well, has he forgotten her already?

4. I want more of Jae shin too...but please don't make him the tortured soul any more than he is already. It's too sad and heartbreaking , not to mention exhaustive. What abt his relationship with his dad? Will they ever patch up?

5. Yong Ha is a mystery. I wanna see more of him too...aside from his bromance with guh-ro.

6. Sun Joon confrontation with his dad. Plus his potential romeo and juliet circumstances with Yoon Hee...

7. What will happen to them all, once the king is dead...since he is already dying...

wow...I guess there's a lot they can touch on...but only if they do it well. Either that, or a season 2 don't sound half so bad...or a special (like jdoramas).

"3. In soo’s dad was originally interested in Yoon Hee as well, has he forgotten her already?"
There is this scene in episode 16 where i thought Yoon Hee would already tell Sun Joon that if she left Skk she would have no choice but to marry the Byungpan. I wonder what would be his reaction if he knows that Byungpan is interested in her..

It's alright if they don't extend and end up with 20 episodes because a second season is always a good option. It doesn't matter if they do it next year (early next year or late next year) because I think the fans can wait. It's a series worth anticipating so a season 2 wouldn't hurt. I hope Korean dramas would start to adapt this system like US TV dramas. I have been watching Asian dramas for years already especially Korean dramas, and second seasons never came into fruition even when production companies and networks were flooded with requests. The manhwa has more than 1 book right? So they can definitely extend the storyline. I hope that for once, SKK Scandal will start the trend of making season two's in Korea. :)

I'm totally in for the season 2 idea. The way these characters grow and the broad scope of the story allows for soooo many more stories left to tell. And it wouldn't be like those dramas that feel like they're being dragged out in order to make money. I thoroughly enjoy this drama and believe there are plenty of things they could explore without over-extending the series.

So, yeah. Another vote for season 2. Is there a petition or something going on? Can we (non-Korean speakers/writers) inundate the producers with our pleas to continue the story?

although im a bit curious on how they would end this series with only 3 episodes remaining and there are still a lot of stories to be unfold.. (unless they doubled the airtime for the last 3 episodes..i know..wishful thinking)

No to extension. I think Yoonhee and Sunjoon's story has nothing more to give us. If you think about it, theirs is a story that has already been told in many dramas (Coffee Prince, Hana Kimi). I think the brooding Yoo Ah In needs his own drama. I hope he gets to have his "High Cut" looks and dark, mysterious, tough and brooding Jae Shin persona into that.

Much as we hope for an extension for Sungkyunkwan Scandal, it would seem to be impossible because of Micky's tight schedule. Well, the screenwriter, director and producer can always prepare another good script for Micky Yoochun to act again, given that he is a born Actor. We really hope to see more of his acting in future. Most of the time, alot of attention and publicity are being emphasized on popular actors and actresses which may not always yield good ratings. Once young good rookie actors or actresses like Micky Yoochun and Park minyoung are discovered, we should not miss the opportunity to groom them.

just my 2 cents worth...
