Ji Hyun-woo and Park Shi-yeon break into the idol biz

Park Shi-yeon (Coffee House) and Ji Hyun-woo (Birth of the Rich), lead guitarist of kpop band The Nuts, have been cast as leads in the upcoming film Happy Together. The movie will take place in the world of the music industry, and in particular the idol factory. Right on. Would love to see this world dramatized, especially if there’s a chance it’s not just a fluff piece.

Ji Hyun-woo will be playing a twenty-something vocalist in a band, and Park Shi-yeon will play the thirty-something producer who wants to turn him into an idol star. Interesting dynamic. I like it already. I just hope the story has some edge; if played safe this loses all interest from me.

Truthfully, I’ll probably watch it anyway for Park Shi-yeon. My main take-aways from Coffee House were: 1) book cafes are cool in theory, but weird in practice; 2) you can stuff a body in a suitcase as long as they’re compliant; and 3) Park Shi-yeon is a gem. Love her.

Happy Together also stars Kim Suro (God of Study, Quiz King) and Im Won-hee (also of Quiz King). Directing will be Ra Hee-chan (All We Need Is Courage, The Big Scene).

Filming will begin in December.

Below is the MV for The Nuts’ Jansori [Nagging], featuring Ji Hyun-woo.

The music video's setting and concept are spot on. I don't think Park is a gem, but I really loved her in Story of a Man.

I did, actually. I liked the charecter's personality, but I think some other actresses could've pulled it off better.

Well, i really disagree with u. Park Si Yeon is the perfect cast in Coffee House. I don't think other actresses could take her place. I adore her since Coffee House.

I agree with you.
No one can pull of EY better than PSY
I falled in love with her in CH- my #1 bias drama of the year - and I got to say her eyes are so impressive :)

Agreed. She did her comedy scenes decently, but I wouldn't say it was that compelling, at least not enough for her to truly resonate with me, especially given how pathetic and indecisive her character turned later in the series. She's an ok actress, but nothing to get seriously heated up about.

He is a musician?O_o Never know that. Only knew him in Birth of Rich. I think I read about Happy Together news before but I didn't recalled what it is about

completely agree about him being underrated. then again, i can say that his project choices are a little... hmm, how do i describe it? safe?! yeah, it's like there's potential [esp in his acting] but what he's given is so limited, hence we cant really see him proving his worth/talent. but the dude is multi-talented!

PSY, ive always loved her and has followed her film career. im not really all happy with her drama roles. i think this casting can generate good on-screen chemistry. can't wait!

Ms Park was a great, and pleasant, surprise in CH as a really modern character with ambition and desires, including (gasps!) sexual ones. She was very engaging.

What I took away from Coffee House is:
1) Kang Ji-hwan belongs to javabeans

For me:
1. I've finally met the love of my life Lee Jin Soo. (Kang Ji Hwan belongs to JB alright. But Jin Soo is mine. Mine!)

2. It turns me from Park Shi Yeon's hater into Park Shi Yeon's admirer.

I'm surprised no one has tried to make something like this earlier; the idol-making factory seems like a rich field for drama. I mean, if even 25% of what we hear about trainees and all they go through is true, that's a pretty good story right there.

I'll definitely check this out, and I hope that they go a little more serious than the "You, too, can achieve your dreams with a ton of hard work and no sleep!" route.

There was the drama Over the Rainbow, which was about idols in training. Too bad that one got pretty dull. So it's all a matter of handling, I think. Hopefully this one's interesting.

I always thought this too, though I bet some people may be wary about doing stories about the hardships of trainees because it will disillusion all those idol fans out there. Like, what? boy band idols are human too and their cute personalities are just personas they have taken on? no way! you mean, they don't have time to sleep or read our fanmail?!

anyways, this sounds interesting!

I don't think they'll be portraying a couple (maybe?) because the premise is PSY is a producer trying to make JHW into an idol star.

Yay Park Shi-yeon! Love her... surprisingly I have no hate for a woman who looks beautiful all the time. I mean.. ALL the time.

I'm so glad her acting got so much better after My Girl, and I actually like the premise of this film.

Hopefully it leads more towards a groundbreaking edgy feel because we all know how hard and sometimes corrupt the industry is on the surface...

but just HOW hard and corrupt is it? Someone surprise me.

I love PSY and JHW so much, Can't believe we can see them in the same drama so much.
Ps: Her fashion style in CH is more than fantastic. I learn a lot from it: chic, style, not too reveal but so sexy...
Can't wait for it to come.

Book cafes can totally work though! I recently discovered Kramerworks Bookstore and Cafe in Washington DC. Great food at a restaurant adjoining a cool bookstore. The bookstore is open as late as the restaurant is, so you can go there for drinks or dinner, and stay for the live music, or browse the bookstore and pick up a good book on the way home. Good times all around :) There's also an awesome second hand bookstore/cafe in the town where I went to college.

This movie looks cool, though. Love Park Shi Yeon. At first I thought the singer PSY was in the movie, then I realized it was the acronym for her name, lol

i kinda wished it was a drama..
anyway, besides the lousy love story in it, i find over the rainbow pretty awesome, esp the stories about entertainment/idol world, where there are many eye openers for starry eyed fangirls who think their idols are oh-so-amusing/innocent/perfect/-insert any word- i learnt not to believe anything from the drama. lol. like the scene where jihyunwoo's dance group-turned idols were instructed to memorize their 'personality' and one of them complained that he didn't even know how to perform his 'favourite sports' but he was forced to follow instructions anyway. there are other things, but like i said, the focus on love parts ruined it. seo ji hye's character was darn annoying n may i say, unnecessary to the plot. she was just there to provide the typical poor-bumbling-hardworking-kind hearted heroine. i liked kim ok bin's character better although she wasn't 'the good girl'....at least, her character felt more human with her constantly letting herself tempted to the dark side.

anyway, that being said, i love ji hyun woo n The Nuts too. awesome band(although i don't like how they always make ji hyun woo pretend to sing in the MVs when he's not the singer although he did sing in certain songs). i guess it's cuz he's the face of the nuts. he's ridiculously adorable in sitcom Old Miss Diaries(gotta watch it for those who haven't)

and then, i love park shi yeon too! so i'm happy to have these two. too bad it's a film, and that means i won't know when i'll be able to watch it.

i'm not completely sure, but this is my take on it:

after the tarrot reading, the girlfriend becomes depressed, afraid of his impending death. and the he gets hit by the train and end up in a coma(i don't see how he could have survived the impact bc he didn't budge but whateva korean muisc videos) so the girlfriend is taking care of him while he is unconscious and when he finally wakes up, he sees the men in black/aka death angels? whisking her away bc she's dead. i think she traded her life in for his(don't know how) because the mom said something to him along this lines "yesterday was the 49th day and our baby(?) saved your life." but it was sure pretty

I immediately thought of Over The Rainbow too because it was a drama about idols and Ji Hyun Woo was the lead as well. So I'm kinda hoping for someone else to play the lead because I didn't like him in that show.

Come to think of it, I've never liked Ji in anything. I only finished OTR for Hwanhee, and My Precious You for Ji's onscreen younger brother Song Joong Ki (yeah that kid stole my heart since then)

Am liking PSY very much ! But alas, i confess to a teeth fetish..... and found hers wanting much in that area ! Wish she'd fix her teeth and then she'd be perrfect.

As for Ji Hlyun Woo - he's nice and all, just a mite too bland for me. Could it be because of the safe roles he'd gotten to date ? Nah.... me thinks the x-factor in low supply there. Mian-he JHW's fans ! He's more like a sweet brotherly type who cld strum the guiter quite nicely and sing nicely too.

Think i'll give this drama a miss. But will definately look out for Secret Garden.

Agree with you. I think Park Shi-yeon is a good actress. She did a great job in Story of a Man, and her performance in LDV was also impressive. But the problem is she's always chosen to play the non-typical K-drama female roles, ambitious, or even aggressive, a little bit dark-sided and femme fatale. Maybe because she's too pretty to be those poor but innocent cinderellas. Therefore even if she deliver a good performace, she's not well received among audience, cause her roles are not adorable.

Finally she stands out in Coffee House. Her personality, or charisma really shines in CH. At last there is a not so conventional but still adorable K-drama female lead. I can't think a second choice but Park Shi-yeon who can do such an amazing job in CH.

About this movie project, I'm not sure if it will touch the dark and corrupted side of the industry. But from the choice of the cast, maybe they will just play it safe. Ji Hyun-woo is the incredibly adorable idol, PSY is the ambitious career woman, and Kim Suro is good for comedy. That's only my guess even though I hope the movie will have some depth and go edgy. But I'll give it a try, for PSY. She said she doesn't want to repeat herself on the screens. So let's wait and see.
