Lots and lots of Dream High stills

So here’s a whole mess of stills from the upcoming KBS drama Dream High, which is probably most known because it’s the collaboration of actor-mini-mogul Bae Yong-joon and kpop producer/svengali Park Jin-young, and stars lots of young idol stars.

It’s for those three reasons that I’ve been pretty leery of the drama, not because I hate kpop (I do like it, promise!) but because I feel like it’s hard enough to get dramas right when the production is in the hands of people who are experts at it. When you throw a bunch of people in there who are totally green and not experienced in this world, it’s a crapshoot at best. But even so, I still want to hope for the best, because I have a soft spot for high school dramas (there really aren’t enough of those — at least not good ones) and youthful exuberance. And I do kinda like that you can take the title as a noun and a verb (as in, high school of dreams and “Dream high!”).

And hey, I love impressive rising talent Kim Soo-hyun (Giant, Will It Snow For Christmas), who’s the only actor of the young crew who’s just an actor (as in, not a pop idol). He’s got tons of talent and great presence onscreen, and plays a character who lives in a tiny town with his mother. When he encounters a Seoul girl (Hye-mi) one day, he falls for her at first sight and does everything for her, which leads him to the Kirin Arts School where he discovers his own musical talent.

I have no prior knowledge of Suzy from Miss A, and her performance will probably make-or-break the drama, because she’s got the lead role (along with Kim Soo-hyun and Taecyeon). She plays Hye-mi, a girl who’s used to being the best at everything though she’s also got a rude personality. But when her father’s business fails, she has to give up her vocal training and decides to pursue auditions at Kirin to become a pop singer, a path she’d previously eschewed as crude and shallow.

I thought 2PM’s Taecyeon did a decent job in Cinderella’s Sister; he has a tendency to come off a little smug, but his energy and vitality went a long way. His character here was given up to an orphanage as a young boy by his single mother. He was then adopted by his paternal grandfather, who is a rich businessman and CEO, but he was practically invisible in that household. His character takes a new name as he leaves that family and starts a new life; now he dances with friends on the street, and happens upon the auditions for Kirin Arts School.

I’m iffier on T-ara’s Eunjung, whose performance in Coffee House was sometimes shaky; she often overdid the dumb cute act, but the girl can really cry on cue. She plays Hye-mi’s sidekick, who’s content to always be her No. 2, who’s often ignored by those around her, even her own mother. When Hye-mi gives up dreams of Juilliard and aims for Kirin instead, she follows along, and it’s only then that she starts to dream for herself.

Another name I’m not familiar with is Wooyoung, who plays Jason, who comes back to Korea after living in the States. He’s got perfect singing and dancing talent (enough to earn him the descriptor ‘genius’), but no interest in competing with others; he just enjoys music.

Singer IU rounds out the main cast as a girl who, appropriately enough, possesses impressive vocal skills. Bright, pretty, and sensitive, she seems like the type who’ll be easy to love. Example: Once at a Kim Hyun-joong concert, he shouted, “Victory!” Mistaking the word (pil-seung) for her own name, Pil-sook dashed onstage, making her a legend among fans. She falls for Jason right away.

The adult cast features actors like Eom Ki-joon and Lee Yoon-ji as teachers at Kirin.

Dream High is slated for 16 episodes and takes up the Monday-Tuesday timeslot on KBS following the current series Mary Stayed Out All Night. It premieres January 3.

does anyone think that some of the stills, especially the ones where they're posing and trying to be serious, look reallyreallyreallyreally unnatural? and super awkward. on the other hand though, the laughing ones look really cute and the "candid" ones like decent.

for the reasons you mentioned, the drama worries me.
but that won't stop me from tuning in for other reasons that i think will keep A LOT of people watching even if this drama does end up sucking hardcore: 1. i love 2PM; 2. miss A (suzy's idol group) is probably the hottest girl group to debut this year; 3. i love kim soo hyun; 4. IU is a cutie and is on her way (it would seem) to becoming korea's next little sister.

i think that a lot of people, including myself, have low-ish expectations for this drama and that's good since that means, this drama can either: 1. meet expectations and be bad or 2. surprise us with some good

Who is he in MSOAN?!?! I've stopped watching it and am utterly confused. Is he the little drummer kid? If so, that is sad because we don't see much of him.

Well I don´t know, but doesn't it sound a little too much similar to a campus drama What Up?

Yeah except What's Up has a higher Actor:Idol ratio, in fact I think Daesung is the only idol (correct me if I am wrong) in it. Personally I am looking forward to What's Up more.

I love 2PM so I hope this is a success at least for Taec and WooYoung. But there is that small evil part in me that hopes this will fail dramatically because I'm not a fan of chucking a whole bunch of idol singers together into a drama. If you want to be an actor work hard to be one. If this becomes a success then they'll be a major influx in idol dramas which means most probably the quality will go down. And I don't want that at all...

I don't know what to think about this star studded drama. To me it feels like "how many idols can u fit into one car" and how many of them will make it out alive?
To me this almost seems like Korea meets Glee , but glee is better.

I get more nervous when I am bombarded with still pics of up and coming dramas.....it's like they are going for the hype rather than the story of the drama and the characters that the actors portray. I'm leery of this drama. I hope to be proven wrong but I am honestly gonna wait for your review before I check it out. Not really a fan of Taecyon. But IU seems interesting, since I have a soft spot for her. She's very sweet. But I have to know the story first of the first epi before I watch it.

egads! I dislike most of these idols and somehow someone came up with the idea of lumping them all into one drama. what even. -_-
Well, hope it goes well for them, but no thanks.

damn, i'm so excited for this drama now, mainly cus of kim soo-hyun (awesome acting n smokin), taecyeon (so cute), and eunjung (hope her acting has improved tho), and eager to see IU act too. I love high school dramas and hopefully the storyline and acting will be good. It's been a while since kdramas targetted towards a teen audience had substance, hope they can bring it so i can finally watch a drama i can squeal to LOL

I know right! If she is going to be the 2nd lead at least have the main lead be an experienced actress (so her 2nd lead status makes sense) and not another kpop idol with zero acting experience.

For someone reason this drama has "flop" written all over it and for the sake of the actors/actresses I hope it proves me wrong but my expectations for everyone except the adults/KSH/Eunjung are quite low.

But I did think of a silver lining in her 2nd lead and that is I get to see her act with Taecyeon. Appearance wise they seem like they could be one sexy couple so I do wonder how they will work.

If it wasn't for the adults and Kim So Hyun and Eunjung, I probably wouldn't watch this mostly because I hate it when idols that have ZERO experience get the main lead. Taecyeon at least took the 2nd lead in CS and sorta impressed me for an absolute newbie, and Eunjung had acting experience prior to her 2nd lead role in Coffee House where I personally liked her character in CH more than the main lead. If I like the other actors portrayals and characters I may follow this regardless of Suzy's acting but otherwise her acting will be the make or break for me in this drama. I like Suzy as a Miss A member so I am not an anti or anything its just that this drama already has JYP nepotism all over it so I hope the acting is up to par. I really wish they either had an experienced actress that is lesser known or have Eunjung played the lead since at least she has experience and has proven that she can act. I adore IU and while I think she should focus on singing I think if she is going to do acting, taking a supporting/side character like this is the way to start, same for Wooyoung.

Honestly I will check this out but I am not lying when I say I am looking forward to "What's Up" about 100x more than this one .

What I'm honestly worried about is, the drama might end up really bad but would be still gobbled up by fans offline and online. Because if that happened, What's Up might suffer some "second-rate" tag consequences, and it's gonna be hard if the drama would be better than this, plot-wise and acting-wise. I honestly think the latter is better based from that awesome trailer they released some time ago. This one is okay, and I hope it delivers well. So that I wouldn't feel that bad when it becomes a bigger hit than What's Up.

lol pretty shallow reason I guess, but I've never really gotten excited by this nor could I take it as a serious musical, high school themed drama compared to What's Up. That one was just too good, the trailer I mean, and I am looking forward on how it would unfold. This one's a hot cast no doubt but...yeah I'm more looking forward with What's Up...and pretty much Goo Hye Sun's the Musical, if we are about dramas that have musical element on it.

Dream high could either be big as BoF, or as an online hit like You're Beautiful or Playful Kiss.

"Wooyoung, who plays Jason, who comes back to Korea after living in the States. He’s got perfect singing and dancing talent (enough to earn him the descriptor ‘genius’), but no interest in competing with others"

*cough* Sorry, but what? They cast Wooyoung as someone who comes back to Korea after livin' in the States and is a genius? Wow. I suppose Nichkhun's too busy filming WGM with Victoria. Pity. On the plus side, Wooyoung is unexpectedly hilarious (in variety shows at least) so he might prove entertaining.

...Or this show could end up being a hot mess. I mean, I love Kim Soo Hyun, so I'll watch it for him alone...but...man. I somehow get the feeling I'm strapped in and watching a train-wreck about to happen. Who's with me?

LOL. Considering Taec actually speaks fluent English, living in Boston for a while, I'd have pegged him for the "American Boy" role...but I'm guessing Wooyoung's role is smaller than Taec's role, so they're going with the whole, "...well, at least Taecyeon has acted in a drama before?" I'd say Taec's role is probably a whole lot bigger.

That said...I can't help but having my hopes WAY up for this drama. lol. But then again, it's also an idol-based drama, so it's way up from that...so that pretty much hits the "mediocre" mark. So hopefully, I won't be disappointed...much...?

Ah. Well. At least there are the visuals...

PIC SPAM!!!

Even though I'm a K-Pop fan, I still don't know if I'm to follow this drama, since the only thing I'm watching out for is:
*Taecyeon (jimseung baby~!; I so loved him in Cinderella Sister even if he's Lee Jeong-jae/slash/James Marsden-from-the-start)
*Jo Sumi (who's gonna cameo, performing Lakme's Flower Song)
*Wooyoung (on a half-hearted take, since I never came to like him that much, and even the fandom of KhunYoung)
*Nichkhun (who's also cameo-ing, if my lacklustre memory serves me right or has gotten it all confused with his "All My Love" stint...)
