One drama has bowed out of the Monday-Tuesday ratings race with its Tuesday finale, KBS’s Mary Stayed Out All Night, the rom-com that hasn’t been very rommy OR commy lately. It went out with a 7.3% rating, which is a tick upward from its Episode 15 number, 5.9%.
We’ll be discussing the details of the finale shortly enough, so I won’t get into the details here; I’ll just say that I think the number is fairly generous given the whimper it went out on. Sigh. Such hopes, I had.
On the other stations, numbers were higher as Athena: Goddess of War brought in an 18.6%, up from its Monday numbers of 17.6%. Despite maintaining its lead, however, its numbers have been slipping from its strong premiere (22.8%), and the third show in the lineup, Queen of Reversals, is actually closing in. Its latest episode recorded a 16.6% — with twelve more episodes ordered, one wonders whether it’ll be able to seriously challenge the spy thriller for supremacy. (On top of that, high school series Dream High will play spoiler starting next week.)
I find it ironic that MBC was in a tizzy over whether to extend Queen of Reversals or not and talked so much about its ratings, which remained firmly in place in the lower teens — and then when it confirmed the extension, numbers rose accordingly. Huh. It’s almost like viewers respond to a little stability in our dramas, rather than letting ourselves be jerked around by indecisive broadcast stations. Wouldn’t you know.

on another note, i remember watching a show where jang guen suk chose soo ae as his ideal woman, after like 10 rounds of choosing, haha.

Athena <3. They actually gave good back stories to their characters. So hooked, the other half and I have taken to watching the episodes without subs when they're released

I fastforwarded though the finale after weeks of not watching the episodes and only reading the recaps! I totally agree with jb! I had such high hopes for the show and even for the finale! I thought maybe they d redeem themselves..but no.

such a waste of talent! I m so sad for the actors..it had the perfect formula but its the biggest proof that without good writing or a sane plot,then its all quite hopeless.
The writing of this show was horrible (and it’s based on an existing manga). Why oh why? It kills me to think about how awesome it could have been.
I know!:( what I dont understand was why they couldnt simply follow the plot of the manga( not that I have read the manga but they could have followed it like how boys before flowers,hana yori dango followed its respective manga). It seemed like they were gripping around in the dark for no reason whatsoever when they had infact a whole manga to follow.
Sometimes when I m bored, I like to image how awesome the show could have been if lets say the Hong sisters were in charge :B
Just make sure to AVOID these writers from now on! No more!

My Self Respect is thrilled that Mary is finally ending, but I’ll miss the warm fuzzies that I always got from seeing Mary and Mu Gyul together. If they hadn’t been so frickin adorable, I would have given up on Mary long ago.

There’s nothing to be said abt Mary that hasnt already been said…i just hope that this isnt the last time Jang Geun Suk and Moon Geun Young work together!…those two have amazing chemistry and some of the best acting chops of the industry

So far, I’m really enjoying Athena.
Some say the drama is slow, but to me, I enjoy those moments between the characters when they interact or how each episode slowly builds up. Not so much about the plot, but when so-and-so meets so-and-so, the small unexpected occurences, or when all these things smaller events slowly start to build up, and everyone gradually becomes linked together rather then forced.
Mary was like a dog in pain that needed to be put to sleep. It kept on going when it wen’t no where and should have nicely ended long ago.
Whoops. Forgot to mention about QoR. If they want to surpass QoH, the female lead MUST end up with the second male lead (can’t think of their names right now…).
I get this tingling feeling that it’s possible since most scenes have the lead with the second lead more then her own husband. But…
Watched Athena episode 5 today. I have enjoyed it thus far. All of the cast have been believable to me and I enjoy this world they have created. A little by little the story for each character is left into the plot. I hope Athena remains strong throughout the show!

I don’t think the ratings for QoR went up because of the extension news but rather because the love triangle kicked into full gear at the same time. I’m loving the dynamic on the show at the moment and hope it ends the way I want it to, though I doubt it will.
Sorry, I meant to be clearer: I don’t think the ratings went up because it was extended either, but because the love triangle was finally ABLE to get into motion after MBC finally made a damn decision already — while they were sitting on their dear hands waiting for ratings to go up, the show couldn’t be sure of how much to draw out their story and therefore was caught in dramatic limbo.
I didn’t think I’d end up loving Queen of Reversals as much as I do. I know the build up was slow but I was always entertained. Also, with 22 episodes, I feel more invested in the characters and the direction the story is headed. The last two episodes made laugh out loud, squeal, and cry. Seriously, love the bromance as well between Goo Yong Shik and his secretary. I love all the side characters and the subplots as well. It’s not often that happens. I hope they make good use of their extension and continue to be good.
I just hope JGS and MGS will have another drama. They have amazing chemistry! The fluffiness! I hoped and hoped for the better but.. oh well…
I wish Athena had higher ratings- it’s so much better than Iris, yet it seems like Iris had the higher numbers. Maybe it’ll go up as the series progresses…?
I eagerly anticipate each new episode and I watch it as soon as it comes out. The last time I did that was for You’re Beautiful, lol. Argh, now I have to wait a whole week for 7 to come out!!!
Even though Lee Jia irks me for some reason, I’m still enjoying it immensely, especially since I have nothing else to watch at the moment!
I think it’s understandable why IRIS had better ratings..it was new and fresh when it came out. And LBY, TOP, KTH as crowd puller…although I find she’s not popular in here, audience do love to watch beautiful people onscreen and she is no doubt one. And the story started with a bang and continue to throw in addictive plot lines….although the extended version of epi 1 midstretch had me bored.
Athena on the other hand, intentionally or not, took a different approach. It almost went the opposite of everything in IRIS, to avoid comparisons most likely. It started slowly (relatively speaking) and had a weaker “first” plot…it is a little more realistic and its characters more believable…but slowly it is building momentum (probably too slow for some, hence the ratings). I’m at epi 5 now and for once after the first epi I’m pretty engaged and not bored most of the time (it still has some dull moments when nothing happens)…
Anyhow, I’m still sticking around for this one and hope it doesn’t disappoints.

Seriously, I know everyone is saying this but I hope QOR has a reversal in the ratings and wins in the end. I know it’s not the best drama but it would be nice to have the actors/actresses see their hard work pay off in the end.
Hopefully Yong-shik and Tae-hee end up together; especially at this rate, I can’t imagine them not ending up together. The love line better kick in soon!

About Yong-sik getting the girl in QOR… In my experience, a KDrama heroine like Tae-hee can get a divorce, but *only if* the husband commits adultery. By the end of E18, at least, that has not happened…
